Sultan of Keswick in Keswick

Called twice after we were let down by another place, and were given a reservation and confirmed, in 20 minutes time. Drove into Keswick to be told that actually they had big bookings coming in and so they couldn t seat us and could we wait for a table to finish. Possibly 30-45 minutes. Seems to me that they possibly just gambled on a table becoming free but didn t care that we might be let down if not. Ended up wandering around Keswick desperately trying to find a table somewhere else, with two hungry kids and a grandma. Deeply unimpressed.

This Indian restaurant in Keswick, Lake District was a good experience. The food(vegetarian) was good and a reminder of good Indian food. The service was quick and the atmosphere was comfortable. Recommended.

Fabulous Indian food at a great price. The Chicken Jalfrezi Puri and the Bhuna King Prawn Puri are the best weve had in 40 years...and weve been to many Indian Restaurants. Service is great, decor maybe a little modern for our tastes, but its exceptionally clean with great service. A gem of a find!@

Another great meal

Came to collect a takeaway with the belief that they offered a 20% discount on collected orders. They refused to give us the advertised discount and laughed at us when we enquired about their false advertising. We shall report them to trading standards. Went to the Lakeland Spice down the road, which offered speedy and friendly service. Edit: Thank you for your prompt reply to my review. You will find that Lakeland Spice offer a similar discount on their delicious takeaways. The fact that I have left a review for a meal that I did not even have just shows how appalled I was with the way you spoke to my mother in law on Friday evening. Good luck with all of your future endeavours.

Staying in a glamping pod close by , after a day hiking we stumbled across sultan in Keswick Town centre . Food was absolutely incredible , and the staff were lovely as we waited for our order . We will definitely be ordering again on our next visit to Keswick!

The food was quite oily and we were told that the food portions were good enough for one person when in reality they were extremely large. Also the quality was bad and in the end the bill was ridiculously overpriced.

Fabulous food. Coming up from the Midlands we are spoiled for choice for quality Indian restaurants, but this place really stood out for us. The quality of the ingredients was outstanding, great flavours, superb customer service from friendly staff.

Food ok but not the best curry for flavours. Very noisy which I understand is normal with a large party of men opposite us,but rather ruined it.

Ordered two chicken pakora and 1 veg pakora. Was charged £17. I received 8 pieces of chicken pakora and 4 pieces of veg. Total rip off. Ended up complaining as I could of got a main course for the same amount. Got £5 and two poppadoms. Still unhappy but was refused a refund for the food. Edit: So glad you took the time to reply back to my review as you have let people know it would be more for 8 pieces of chicken pakora and 4 pieces of veg pakora if I didnt get a discount. I dont think there would be many people want to pay what I did or more. If I went to McD of KFC and wasnt pleased with the quality I would also request a refund. You may not be happy with my review but I was equally unhappy about the quality and quantity of your pakora. The person I spoke to on the night, also agreed that they wouldnt be happy paying what I did. Thats the reason I got money back and poppadoms. Always happy to leave a rubbish review when its needed.

After booking a table, we ordered meals with a pleasant and friendly waiter. The food was fairly quick to arrive and very well enjoyed. Service charge was automatically added to the bill. and the bill sent to us without request. After payment, we were quickly asked to leave the table despite having almost a full bottle of wine left and other drinks.

Had a take away, chicken pakora tasted like cheap chicken nuggets the vegetable pakora was grated vegetables and burnt, the chips where colourless . The main meals very disappointing too. Its gone down hill as it used to be quite a nice place.

Eaten here each time we visited Borrowdale in 2023. Booked for Christmas eve and once again an epic meal. Tasty and hot food with great portions. Staff are always warm and welcoming with a family vibe. Keep up the great work guys.

First time visit with friends. The room was very noisy due to high ceiling and no soft furnishings. The food was generally good although my three chilli curry that I asked for extra spicy was rather mild and dry. If any of the staff had bothered asking I would have let them know. The foot was served sporadically, like tapas. Our starters arrived before we had finished the poppadoms. The staff were removing plates whilst we were eating. We had to ask for everything. Didnt pay the 10% service charge they automatically added to the bill.

Very tasty food, and pleased to see a few vegan options. However, they need far more vegan food on the menu, and ideally remove all non-vegan items so that they become a 100% plant-based restaurant.

Proper old school traditional curry restaurant. Nothing trendy, just really nice food that hits the spot and friendly welcoming staff.

If youre going for proper (OG) Indian/Pakistani food then its an utter disappointment. The food (chicken dopiyaza, chicken makhni, daal) was absolutely bland. We had to ask the waiter to check if the chef forgot to put salt in the daal. The pulao rice was probably just boiled rice and had no flavour at all. The only thing that was considerably edible was the starter (garlic chicken puri). The ambience wasnt great either especially because the place was extremely noisy (not sure why). The service and the staff attitude is the only thing I can appreciate.

Dined here on Saturday 15th July after a team build day with colleagues at GAP Group. Its the second time weve dined here after a fabulous meal the year before. Highly recommended and we will be back next year! Great service and excellent food. Looking forward to our next visit

Had a nice meal, I couldve done with a tad more spice, but my wife was more than happy. Staff attentive without being over the top, service was good and prices were average by Lake District standards. Only thing I didnt notice, after reading the reviews, was any mention of service charge on the menu. I did leave a tip, as I do if I enjoy a meal, but wouldnt have done if Id seen there was a service charge.

Dont bother. We walked in and after some serious consideration were told since we didnt have a booking we would only have 15/20 minutes to eat. We went someplace else but walked by 45 minutes later to plenty of tables empty. By the way, I did look for a way to book yesterday but there is no apparent way to do so online and their site doesnt say anything to suggest booking otherwise.

Foods halal, so they say. Problem they serve drinks and alcohol seemed like same glasses. I didnt like that as Im Muslim. Guy in charge was a brilliant host. Down side £10 service charge added onto bill (I like to decide my tip). Food was hot but nothing special, nan £3.50 was told would serve 2 it wouldnt do 1 and Im not a big eater. Atmosphere was brilliant nice and busy. All in all was okay bait over priced wont go again but didnt regret it either. Thank you. Parking: Parking very limited in streets. None close by. Wheelchair accessibility: Has small steps in entrance 3 of them.

Our son visited this restaurant whilst on holiday several weeks ago and raved about it, so we decided to give it a go. We werent disappointed, lovely atmosphere attentative staff and great food.

Wow amazing food, staff so friendly and so efficient and quick. They all work well under pressure. We were sitting in the two seaters by the window, and just felt very much like we couldnt talk privately, being so close to the other dining guests. That was the only thing that wasnt great. But we would definitely come again.

The overall food quality at Sultan of Keswick was the worst. I would give MINUS rating for all the below reasons - 1. Naan was burnt 2. Food was TOO MUCH OILY 3. Smell of Kheema Naan was like a raw Lamb. 4. We had ordered Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi and Chicken Tikka Kurhai but we couldnt distinguish between 2 dishes as both dishes felt the same. 5. There was too much onion, tomato and capsicum in the main dish which didnt feel like eating 6. The food was costly. 7. Every food item price was more than the price mentioned in their menu card on Google. 8. Food was NOT AT ALL worth it. 9. We had also ordered Garlic Naan and Cheese Garlic Naan but couldnt see Garlic in both of them. Hope the owner of Sultan of Keswick sees this honest feedback and works on it. Thanks. Parking: Parking is not available so need to park at the store free parking at mini roundabout which is free for 1 hour.

Its near to keswick museum Square, nice looking place but food was average. We ordered coriander garlic naan and puree which was nice but rest of our food veg biryani, veg pakora and acharee chicken was not nice. Staff was friendly atmosphere is good but good food matters.

Had nice meals here before, but after waiting 5 mins to be attended to, then being told only doing takeaways at 9.30 when says open to 10.30, (the chef and kitchen obviously still on the go), just kind of stings of cant be bothered, when there were 6 others there. Before you ask, no, I wasnt plastered. just fancied a pleasant meal. Am sure attitude would be different if was a party of 10. Too greedy and cant be bothered, will not visit again.

Warm welcome on arrival, very friendly member of staff, order promptly taken and popadoms arrived quickly, all good but then it got even better. My wife said it was by far the best tandoori salmon she has ever had, and she s had her fair share during her lifetime. The portion size was extremely generous. My lamb dish was very good as was everything else - rice, breads etc. I don t understand the negative reviews, they are not deserved one bit. The staff are polite, efficient and friendly. Maybe those people who gave negativity in respect of the staff need to have a look at themselves - you get back, what you give! Would not hesitate to revisit when next in Keswick. Such a lovely son and dad team running the place who were so polite , chatty and helpful in assisting us which curry to choose . We managed to get a table for four on a busy Friday, when every place in town was fully booked. We really enjoyed the food. Our favourite was the mustard lamb dish recommended by the waiter. We thought the other curry dish we ordered could have been slightly more flavourful, but overall it was a nice meal, which was well priced and portioned.

Got takeaway, the bhoona and achari Currys were pretty average, the garlic naan may as well have been plain as it had almost no flavour and this is apparently £5 worth of chicken pakora.....

Very impressed with our experience here. Seated quickly, friendly staff very attentive. Onion Bhaji for starters, decent sized portion and tasty. Our mains were fresh and spiced just right. All in all a great meal reasonably priced. Would recommend.

Worst experience, this place is not Halal, staff doesn t know about if its chicken kabab or beef, one of them said its chicken and halal other one said it s beef, so they just playing up. Management should take action on this offering someone a wine who is asking for a halal food that s big shame. Food was disgusting and full of smell. We didn t even ate and i paid them just, there staff even told us meat is not fresh because we can get it from here. Employer should take notice of all this, and those nasty kababs were from yesterday. BIG Shame we will never forget this. Don t trap customer if you don t do halal food. We didn t even see rest of the food we paid for and feel vomit when i see this picture, can t get over smell of food

Have been to this restaurant before (about 5 years ago). It did not disappoint!! Got there about 6.30pm and got a table straight away. It was fill within aboit 30 minutes. Had the Chicken Jalfrezi which was cooked to perfection. Pilau rice portion was enough for two. Reasonably priced too! Staff were attentive and friendly. Highly recommend!!

No doubt about the food quality. BUT their service quality is extremely poor if they believe that you are not going to spend much. Specially when they know that you will not spend money on drinks. One of the main meal was not served until I reminded twice, even cutlery was not surved, no tissue, table was uncleaned so I had to clean my table. Where as I saw them serving my next table with care. I would not completely call it racial discrimination but I would call it poor judgement about a persons spending ability not serve them properly.

Great curry, good service

Meals ok, but prices very expensive for small portions. Rip off 10% automatic service charge added to my bill, which I didn t notice until later, so had left a tip as well! Since I saw many other customers leaving cash after paying by card, this must have happened to them too! Sultan of Keswick is Insulting the intelligence of the customers they are ripping off!!

Food and service excellent and table screened on both sides allowing easy conversation. Onion bhajis followed by chicken bhuna and dopiaza plus rice, poppadoms and naan bread made for an excellent meal on our first visit. Will be back when we are in Keswick again.

On holiday here. Tried the other Indian last weekend which was very good. Thought I d try here this week as they offered 20% discount on takeaways. Was a little apprehensive given some of the reviews, but needn t have worried. Absolutely superb meal. The Chicken Pathia main was as good as I ve tasted. Wouldn t hesitate to recommend.

King prawns dish is mainly vegetables with small pieces of prawns. Meat and Veg Samosa are very disappointing as well. Their Pepsi doesn t taste good either. Everything is overpriced.

Scraped a 2 star. Visited here yesterday night as we are on holiday in Keswick for the weekend. Most of the food was somewhat ok and the portions are definitely up to scratch, The restaurant is also very clean with nice decor but unfortunately the pricing was wrong/different On the receipt to the menu, the plates where cold, staff really need to speak up and stop mumbling, the king prawn curry didn t contain many prawns or much flavour, lack of beers on tap £5 for a cobra is also overly steep, no sweet menu whatsoever . They also automatically add a 10%no mandatory service charge which seems to becoming a common occurrence. If I want to tip I will and I will also decide the amount I tip. We are not in America after all. I feel my review was completely fair and honest. Please don t be angry by it. Instead take time to improve the services in your restaurant.

Absolutely excellent restaurant. We always eat at the Sultan after a group of 14 of us have been wild camping and hiking on the lake District fells and also when Im on holiday in the lakes. Our meals have always been excellent and the staff are friendly and welcoming too and couldnt do enough to help us. The family who run the business have faced some tough times too(check out their website for more details) theyve done really well to maintain such consistent standards and this is a testament to them. I really dont understand some of the unfair, negative reviews of this restaurant either. They bear no resemblance to my experiences here whatsoever and some of the customers appear to just be complaining about the fact that they had to pay for their food. The Sultan is a business, not a charity so if you go there be prepared to pay for your food! The Sultan is our Indian restaurant of choice whenever we visit the lake District.

Best Indian meal I have had! The food was amazing, from the chicken chat, to the masala. Beautiful! The service is first class and the restaurant has a lovely feel to it. I especially like the booths. One issue, I didnt realise a service charge was added until I got home. This should be pointed out otherwise I would have given 5 stars.

Sultan of Keswick offers a very high standard of çuisine, my favourite dish being Chicken Tikka Dhansak which is an explosion of flavours and has to be tried. The staff are very friendly and efficient. If you are visiting Keswick, sample the delights of Sultan, you will not be disappointed.

This place had cooked to order with lots of veg. Gives the guest to spend time with people their with. It was my first place many moons ago.

Ordered a takeaway from here and it was absolutely lovely. Madras was just right and the mix grill was banging. Would highly recommend if your in or around Keswick.

Visited on a Saturday evening. Brightly lit and noisy with lots of tables crammed in. Service was rushed and a bit unfriendly which was a shame as they been great in the past (new younger staff). Food was very good, great selection of dishes you dont see elsewhere, but expensive.

Absolutely delicious food. Dined in many many places of a similar style and have to say I was blown away by the quality, tasty, rich, and layered flavours served here. Just what you need after a day on the fells. Good service - quick enough but not rushed and a great bottle of house red wine which tasted like it could have been a much more expensive variety. All in all very good. One of us had the rajasthani (chicken) curry and one the goa pils chicken (yummy!!) .the children had chicken tikka (starters) each for a main and shared rice and chips with it. Even for these two usually fussy they loved it and even at the salad garnish!!Would definitely come back again, the carrot and lime pickle was the BEST I have ever had .and I ve had a lot of chutneys!! Also good value. 4 of us eat comfortably for £108 incl. service with sundries, sides, beer, wine and soft drinks.

Phoned up as they opened to make a booking for a group of 5 no issues seated straight away service was quick and friendly, food was spot on will definitely eat here again when we are back in the area

Tasteless, bland, expensive. Its coming to something when the best part of a meal for two costing change short of £60 is the pickle tray. We both ordered lamb tikka karahi with rice and i had a garlic naan. I had one beer. My partner had a cup of tea. £60!! First the good points. The pickle tray was OK. The rice was OK. Now the bad. The main dishes had more pepper and onion in them than lamb. What lamb was in there was tough. Karahi is a medium curry (2 chillis on the menu). It had zero spice in it. Bland. It was also just tasteless. Zero spice, zero flavour. When the waiter asked how our meals were I was honest but polite and told him we were a little disappointed in how bland and tasteless it was. He went away and returned with the menu pointing out our curry was only a medium and not supposed to be spicy. OK. Its not meant to blow your head off but the least you expect is to be able to taste some spice. Or an actual flavour! My garlic naan was tiny to be frank, and not very garlicky. The size of a side plate at best. This place obviously survives on tourist trade that only ever visit once. I cant imagine anyone being impressed enough to return. Having come from West Yorkshire (the curry capital of the UK so we know a good curry when we have one) I would say that this was the worst curry weve ever had and the worst meal we have had the misfortune to have together as a couple. When the food was brought out to the table it did not smell of anything and as it turned out tasted just how it smelled. Bland and lifeless, certainly not to the standard we are used to. We were hungry and did not want to waste the food so we ate it but i must say that it had to be forced down. The staff were too busy watching football (Wales v USA in the world Cup) and it took a long time to get their attention. Despite passing them feedback at the end of this meal they have still had the cheek to charge us a £5.45 service fee ! Its been not just a waste of a lot of money but such a great disappointment to end what had otherwise been a lovely day ! ). I would love to save somebody from the disappointment we had. Very poor. Very bland. Very expensive. In fact now that Ive scrutinised the bill Ifurther i feel I need to share it. 1 x Cobra £4.90 1 x tea £2.00 2 x poppadoms £1.80 1 x pickle tray £3.10!!! No wonder this was the best bit of the meal!!! Who charges separately for poppadoms and the pickles that go with them??? And £4.90 at that!!!?? 2 x lamb tikka karahi £31.90! 2 x pilau rice £7.00 1 x garlic naan £3.80 Service charge (even after a complaint) £5.45!!! Avoid avoid avoid.

Have been before and sat in restaurant before Covid when last visited Keswick. It was great then as it was this time. Got a click and pick up and everything was just fine. Very tasty and very hot as it was put together last minute. Will order again.

Ordered from here on our holiday. The reviews looked good. Wasnt very impressed. The korma was tasteless, they forgot our poppadoms and it wasnt cheap.

First visit to Sultan of Keswick and definitely will not be the last. Excellent meal and very friendly staff. Would recommend if you are in Keswick but need to book first.

Indian Bangladeshi restaurant in Keswick, Lake District. A five minute walk from the Bell Close Car Park where parking after 7pm costs £1 for the night and which is very easy to get to from the A66 Keswick bypass roundabout. Easy laid back ambience, decent wine list and very good food. Good hygiene. The Signature dishes section on the menu was different to the usual. We had the Chicken Tikka Aderki (Sic) which was very good. The Nan was fresh and fluffy. Very good. The Onion Rice was good too. The other dishes sound promising. Generally, a very nice meal while on an equally nice and relaxed holiday in the Lake District. Recommended.

Excellent food, both quality and portion size. Sadly they mixed up my order and received a different dish, but it was delicious and they did apologize for the mistake.

The worst ever experience I had. The worst staff. They dont know how to deal with customers. The food quality was also worst though. The staff misbehaves with customers. Takes a lot of time to serve food and even with the worst quality.

We went to this restaurant expecting a pleasant family meal, however, this was not the case. After we ordered our food we were waiting an hour and ten minutes for it to be cooked. Many tables around us who ordered after us received there food before us. Once we had received our food we were enjoying it a lot until one of the people in our party of 4 had found a piece of plastic in their food. As well as the poor service and food mistake, the COVID regulations were even poorer. Our table was about 50cm from another, giving hardly any elbow room. There was no ventilation throughout the restaurant and we were not once asked for our track and trace details. No point was made to make people wear masks when moving throughout the building. They did offer to remake the food, yet at this point we did not trust the food. To make up for the mistakes made they gave us a discount and we didnt have to pay a service charge. However, i would say there are probably better places to eat in Keswick than this restaurant.

Restaurant was busy but wed booked a table and were sat down on time. Although it was full the service was good without feeling rushed and staff friendly and attentive. Food absolutely top drawer and would definitely recommend this place

Fantastic food and excellent service. We went two nights and enjoyed both meals. Well definitely go again when were next in the area. Thank you all at the Sultan of Keswick :-)

We were looked after and service was fast and friendly but we also found it extremely expensive so we will not be going back there again.

Awful bland food, the lamb bhuna was full of chunks of raw ginger and garlic, no flavour at all. The chicken curry had no flavour either, it was listed as 2 chillis, but we couldn t taste any of the normal flavours you would expect in this dish. The chicken was so tough we could hardly chew it. The good news was that the naan bread was tasty and moist. I pity the residents of Keswick if this considered the best, or is there one hidden away that only they use.

Great meal, quality was perfect, speed and service was brilliant.

Best Indian food ever would recommend if your in lake district.

Lovely food, great service. I had vegetable pakora to start and then chicken tika shatkora. Hubby had chicken pakora and then lamb tika garlic. I have never seen so much garlic in one dish! (But hubby enjoyed it) We shared a garlic and cheese naan. Food came really quickly and we had cobra which was on tap.

AVOID, AVOID The worst customer service I ve experienced for a Curry house! Booked a table for 21:00, made to wait 35 mins as they do not reserve your table for you. Allowed a group of 12 past before us that had a later reservation and a a couple in before us who didn t have a booking. No apology from the staff simply indifferent to your presence. Just sacked it off in the end!

Our party of four enjoyed the staffs extradinary hospitality and consideration. They were packed out and their was great merriment in the restaurant. We put this done to the great food and service of the staff. The lighting was subtle and high back seating exceeding comfortable and made our table like a booth we enhanced our dining experience. We all left exceedingly satisfied . I recommend you to visit without any reservation.

Good service, ordered lamb tikka biryani. Good sized portion with generous chunks of tender meat. Never had it with an omelette on top. Great meal

Takeaway was good, a bit spicy

Spent the best part of £200 and not once did we get a smile out of the staff. They seemed to not care we were actually there!

Food ok. Brought the wrong dish for me so I had to wait longer for my food. Heard the waiter who took the order say to the one who brought the food Send my apologies to the kitchen, he didnt even apologise to me himself! Staff member snatched my card out my hand and processed a contactless transaction without even confirming the amount with me and then walked off without giving me a receipt. Had to follow him back to get one off him just to see how much Id been charged. Not acceptable behaviour at all. Adding insult to injury they added a service charge to the bill! I wont be back.
