Lovely pub in the centre of Keswick, with traditional style beams and warm welcoming atmosphere. Within minutes of our arrival at 12 noon, the pub filled up, always a good sign. Staff were cheerful, friendly and helpful. Both the bar and food service were efficient. Food was very good, nicely presented and tasted lovely. Good selection of dishes are available from the menu. This pub has a greet selection of local real ales and beers. Dogs are very welcome in this pub, water bowls and treats are available for them. The interior was very cosy and looked nice having just been decorated for the festive season. Everything was immaculate and tidy.
In my opinion the best pub on the face of the earth. The greatest goulash and beer with a tremendous atmosphere made even better by Ru who has a tremendous personality. Thankyou
Pub in Keswick Friendly staff and went to try the famous goulash. Dog Friendly Ordered drinks at bar Goulash was really really nice and plentiful. Came served with a slice of garlic bread. Ordered small asan at bar suggested. Thank God when I saw the standard size I knew I could not have eaten that. All 3 of my party loved the meal and we went back again a second time during our stay and had it again. Nice atmosphere. Busy but nice. Best pub we visited in Keswick
Nice cosy pub and if you like dogs and beer you won't be disappointed. Food took around 20 minutes which I thought was really good considering how busy it was. You can't book a table but you don't need to wait long to get one. Food was good pub food for a reasonable price for this part of the world. Just a note for people with kids, we had a little one, there no high chairs from what we could see and it was not offered. For a price guide I was £85 for 4 mains, one starter and 4 drinks.
We've been here a few times. Food always nice. Good service. Friendly and helpful staff. Good location in town centre. Dog friendly.
Tasty and good quality food. Average price for a pub restaurant, dog friendly nice atmosphere inside/ outside and friendly staff. Weirdly no beef burgers on the menu though which took me by surprise, but luckily the butter chicken burger was great.
I became aware of Dog & Gun after I saw the Rick Steven's travel documentary on Lake District. He gave a good recommendation and that piqued my interest in this pub. Of course when we planned to visit Keswick we decided to try this pub for lunch, just like Rick did. Of course we went for their famous goulash plus along with their crispy chicken burger. I always wanted to try goulash so based on my first time experience I can say it was really tender and flavourful. Do note it comes piping hot especially the dumpling that retains heat for way too long. A minor negative is that the burger was good but not great and wasn't really worth the price. Anyways the vibe is pretty good and the staff is really friendly. The pub isn't too big so you will end up waiting for a table to become free. Nonetheless I will definitely recommend trying this spot if you are in town and want to grab some grub from the local pub.
It is always a place on our to go to list when we stay in Keswick, as the food, drink and atmosphere are always great. When we were there 20th April, we met some of the cast of Little Shop of Horrors there after their last show at the Theatre By The Lake. If you stay in Keswick, you must go here for food (the famous Goulasch) , drink and to relax😊
Kid-friendliness: Not ideal Wheelchair accessibility: Could access..tight to move around inside Food : 5/5 |
Busy pub. We went here for the open log fire and Guinness but left after one pint. Service was very slow and a little disorganised. Not much in the way of an atmosphere.
Greta beers and goulash
Really lovely festive feel. We thoroughly enjoyed visting.
Lively, friendly and dogs are welcome.
Love this place dog friendly and great food great service
Super oldy worldy hostelry, welcoming, smiley and knowledgeable staff. Quaint decor, lovely place to meet and spend evenings with friends and family. A good collection of local and wider range ales, lagers and wine. Go on give it a try, you won t be disappointed, a must try is the locally produced Woof Bang ale.
Great place, lovely atmosphere. Im quite antisocial, but still ended up talking to tables next to us each time. Really nice place.
Always busy, which is a good sign of a good pub A good selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, the food was great. Ru who checked on us made us feel welcome. She replaced our chips with no hesitation that we knocked on the floor, brilliant service Food : 5/5
Atmospheric place with very nice service and very good food. I recommend visiting
Stopped by here for a quick drink but was tempted into ordering off the menu. I got the veggie goulash and it was lovely. Proper pub food. Vegetarian options: Offered veggie goulash
Dog friendly, great food and happy patrons. Loved it
Very popular pub, always busy.
Very popular and busy pub in Keswick. We went along on a Sunday evening, just after 5pm and luckily found a seat for 2 but do expect that it might be full and you may have to hang around a bit with a drink before getting a seat. The atmosphere is great, very friendly bar staff, plenty of good beer choices on tap and we enjoyed the food too, which was the goulash (both meaty and veggie). The only thing Id change for next time is to order the small portion, as it was a big old bowl full! Cracking pub.
Lovely food
Really enjoyed the signature goulash! Excellent service from Ru.
Vibrant, friendly pub. We were served by Ru today and she was quick to resolve my daughters dietary requirements.
We had fish and chips here and it was absolutely amazing also we had the steak and ale pie and was one of the best we have ever had. We were served by Ru. We also enjoy the atmosphere in the Dog and Gun as it s our third visit this week due to the friendly bar staff (especially Ru)and we enjoy the beer as well.
We had a delicious meal today, there were five of us and two dogs. Goulash, pie, fish n chips and scampi. Very tasty. A special mention to Ru who was friendly, professional and attentive. Thank you Food
Lovely, cosy, friendly pub. Very busy at lunchtime but food came quickly.
Wow! That Beef Goulash is top draw. Do it! Great local feeling pub, great staff. Thank you. Food
My wife saw a reserved sign on a corner table so I went in to enquire if I could book a table for dinner. The old guy behind the bar advised no bookings taken just come in and find a table. When I said my wife had seen a reserved sign he replied no she didnt. Even after I pointed out the sign on the table, no apology. Very rude, and stopped us from trying to get a table later.
Good food friendly staff
Busy, if you can grab a table, the Hungarian goulash is epic and the rest of the food is good as well. Service great and the staff are friendly
Very busy but the staff were really helpful, helping find the right cask ale and the food was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the goulash! If you re looking for a cozy little place to bring your family and have a delicious meal and a refreshing drink I d definitely recommend coming here. The Loweswater Gold was as good as ever.
Ghoulash during Halloween seems appropriate.
Great atmosphere and good selection of real ales. A very traditional English pub. Dogs are always welcome with or without their humans!
So great to come across a proper pub. Great selection of beers and ales, wholesome meals at an affordable price and the lively atmosphere just topped it all off. If youre in Keswick dont leave without going here
Lovely little find 5* but would give more stars! Probably the nicest pub in Keswick lovely atmosphere, happy, smiley staff and great food too The goulash is just amazing and the beef pie too Our server Ru was fun she had us all laughing Highly recommended
A lovely pub to visit, excellent food and the staff are really friendly and helpful. Ru made the visit well worth it. Certainly will be going back.
Had a very enjoyable late afternoon with great chips served by Ru!
Had their famous Hungarian Goulash, well I have seen more meat on a butchers pencil.
Great beers and nice friendly atmosphere. Lots of dogs about Service
We dropped in for lunch last Wednesday, great food, atmosphere and friendly staff. My go to pub in Keswick!
Staff good, bar quiet small with not much seating inside. Lots of seating outside so no problem. Looks nice after the refurbishment last year.
Called in for lunch. They do a cracking goulash , but had none today. So had to pick something else from the menu. Everything was frozen so not very inspiring. Very average, but filled a hole.
Over the food and good beer. Nice lively atmosphere
I was recently in the pub after a long day of walking and the beers I had were delicious, so thanks to whomever described the flavours. Also tried the famous goulash and it s earned the hype it s got.
I only drink in there, good value for money, staff very helpful and knowledgeable
Best dog friendly pub in Keswick
The goulash was all but looked good at the neighboring table.
Cosy warm welcoming pub right in the heart of Keswick. Goulash was absolutely delicious. Dogs welcome.
Great Christmas pub in the centre of Keswick, good real ale selection
Really good vibe, great ales. Great if you like dogs (we do)
Good veggie options.... as its so popular it gets very busy and theres usually a wait for the food... worth it though
Highly reccomend the goulash very tasty. Will definatley be back when we are next in Keswick. It was that good I forgot to take a picture of it! Food
...I ordered goulash without meat. Very tasty! My husband with meat was also very pleased!... The dark beer is very tasty ;-) The atmosphere is soulful!.. The staff is very polite and responsive!.. Thank you! Vegetarian options: The goulash was very tasty!..
Just had drinks
Friendly service however no baby changing table Cool story around the fireplace and mountain rescue Food : 5/5
Great pub in town center Keswick, extremely dog friendly just a little expensive for drinks. Nevertheless always nice to sample a couple.
When I visit Lake District, this pub is mandatory stop. The atmosphere is nice, you won t be in a hurry to leave and the Goulash is always the best option!
Always busy, best to sit outside and enjoy the hussle and bussle of Keswick high street
Excellent beers and wine ,pub has loads of character
Great service scampi chips and peas good portion value for money .. salt and pepper chilli chicken very tasty .
Called in for the famous goulash late afternoon rainy Tuesday, but when I tried to order beers and 2 beef goulash was told no table available and I couldn t order food until seated. Famous for goulash and signs all over the outside and inside pushing this speciality. We waited at bar 10 minutes until a table came free, then tried to order 2 goulash, to be told they were sold out half an hour ago! Great! Busy and lively pub, but why couldn t they have told me that before. Others waiting for goulash too. Signature dish sold out at 430pm!! Very pricey beer too. Pub is in a great central location but owners need let people know if it s not available. Went elsewhere for food.
Great traditional pub....luckily got seated for lunch, as was busy, as always. Nice and warm and friendly, with lovely staff members
This has been a favourite of mine for over 40 years. Always call in for a beer when visiting Keswick. Good range of beers.
Great place if you can get a table as always busy. Lovely atmosphere and food, staff very friendly
Excellent place. Yummy food, great bar, fab atmosphere
A place we had heard a lot about, so when we arrived in Keswick and couldnt check in yet, we went there. What a cozy pub! Had a few drinks and had the nachos and loaded fries with Katzu chicken. Delicious! Friendly staff! Not a dog lover or allergic to dogs, dont go in!
Absolutely lovely pub, dog friendly of course, great food, great service. Just perfect
Great pub, good food, good selection of beer and nice interior...only downside is how busy it can get on a weekend! Gets a bit tight by the bar but then thats cos its good..
Great bar with loads of good beer and food..
Excellent service, excellent food and do try the chicken burger if you get a chance! Only issue is its only a small place so you might struggle to find a table
Nice pub in the middle of the town. Buy a pint, sit outside and watch the world go by. Loaded fries were great too!
Great place to stop off. Very pleasant surroundings. Food was great & not pricey.
Proper pub with a good range of real ales. Lots of talking with groups and couples enjoying the atmosphere of a genuine public house that welcomes everyone. Did not have anything to eat but it is well known for the goulash bowls. Enjoyed our late evening there. The barman was a star as he reminded me that I could use the CAMRA discount here.
Booze only on this visit, sadly Goulash look very very good, couldnt tempt my family to dine here with me. Dog friendly. Great location...sure to visit wearing my eating trousers next time.(elasticated waist) Parking: Parking... none associated with the Pub. Local (If a little pricey municipal Parking) but all of Keswick is stitched up.
Had a few drinks here, good selection and service
Excellent pub and relaxing atmosphere definitely go again on my visit to Keswick staff really friendly 5 stars
Disappointed. Came for goulash and lacked ingredients (this was a 12 noon visit)
Had a lovely meal here with friends, food was great and at a reasonable price considering it was in Keswick.
Dog friendly establishment, with a lovely atmosphere..
What a cracking pub , good banter, not badly priced (expensive cause its touristy) awesome decor, loved the toilets (quirky) will be back for some of that goulash!
My wife and I Called in for lunch friendly welcome from the staff, a great selection of beers, food was excellent would definitely recommend also dog friendly
Great atmosphere. Reasonably priced too
Lovely staff, good vibezzz & cozy atmosphere
Great pub great staff lovely food
The food was not good. Probably worst pub meal in a few weeks of visiting UK. The pie was really bad and the goulash was below mediocre leaving an unnatural after taste. The place was packed but I would avoid it and find a better place if you want tasty food that feels good.
Its nice to be able to bring your dog in a pub but when theres people with 4 or five dogs at once Im taking up room for paying customers who cant find a seat because of all the dogs under hygiene aspect put you off eating and thats only cause of the number of dogs more of them than there was people
Claim they cater for gluten free, asked the women bartender if I just remove the onion rings off my meal will that be gluten free - yes. Food came and guy said how severe is my allergy as chips werent gluten free, firstly it was said it was gluten free. Even on website allergen menu. Also chips had then touched rest of my food so couldnt eat. Also it shouldnt matter how serve my allergy is, it still harms someone so shouldnt say they care about allergys. Chicken was cold, not a good place to visit. Partners meal was just OK. Wouldnt recommend to anyone. Update. Partner has got food poisoning, is very sick after his food.
Great range of Real Ales & dog friendly. Good food.
Food is absolutely gorgeous. Staff are really lovely and its dog friendly too! We can rely on The Dog and Gun to be comfortable and feed us well while in Keswick. Our favourite pub
Shop assistant in Penrith told us of the goulash here. Beef goulash was spot on with just enough paprika. However the vegetarian was a different recipe (yes, Meat less but different veggies too and little paprika) and twice as much black pepper as was needed. My wife can eat a korma and we said as much to barman however I ended up with my beef in the veggie and wife eating the beefless original. Bit too much pepper for me too and taste of veggies overwhelmed. Beer, staff and atmosphere were all good and seating was bench or stool rather than chairs (info for those needing some support behind them as we do).
Excellent Ale attentive staff...unusual for a TOURIST TYPE PUB enjoyed my few pints...thank you Service
I had the meat pie. Very tasty. Sat outside on a nice day and watched the visitors after hiking Walla Crag. Great location. Good food.
Great atmosphere, very clean pub.just had drinks reasonably priced
Fantastic food, fabulous staff and well priced. Shame I was driving as I would have sampled the great selection of beers on tap.
Quick service, friendly and helpful staff
Goulash awesome, old peculiar awesome, staff awesome, banter awesome
Nice pub, food was good and good value.
We had good food (mac & cheese and lasagna) for a relatively cheap price.
Excellent food and well kept ales, friendly helpful staff would definitely recommend
The food was delicious, so credits to the chef. However the bar staff were rude, when asking questions they were trying to disregard me and my family. The pub only had one gluten friendly dish which they were sold out off.
Nice bar
Gulash avoid as it is not Hungarian Gulash, terrible taste like each ingredients were cooked separately. Only our dog was happy as ate 4 portions. I would recommend chips with onions, as you cant ruined it. Variations of local Ale.
Goulash...wow!!!!
We popped into here quickly and without much thought, fully expecting a tourist trap type restaurant with prices to match and we were completely wrong! The prices were fair and the food was very nice. The biggest plus though was the staff who went above and beyond when an accident in the kitchen caused the last child s pizza to become unsalvageable. My son was upset at this and when the staff noticed they proceeded to make a new pizza from scratch from a flatbread and as well as that, offered free desserts for the kids. We felt very looked after and appreciated.
Nice beer & great to sit outside. Always busy here. Food average but available all day which is a plus.
Goulash is a must whenever I visit Keswick
fab cosy traditonal pub, dog friendly and fantastic food, in keswick Town
We went to place our order and the bar staff gave us a 3 minute deadline. Apparently, the kitchen was closing at 8pm. Really felt very rushed and even unwelcome. I had the Goulash which was very salty.
One of the best pubs in Keswick. Despite it being a greene king it always has some good beers/ales on tap.
Just been in and had the goulash and a cup of tea. Damn good cup of tea and the goulash is the best thing I ve tasted in the Lake District. Food
Lovely friendly atmosphere, lots of dogs too Hungarian Goulash OMG best pub meal we have had in years! Highly recommend a visit!
We both had the goulash which was more than excellent. Im trying not to put weight on, so we had the smaller portions, which was plenty, and the chef substituted broccoli for the garlic bread!
Great goulash and good beer. Very dog friendly.
My wife and I ate here 2 times (over 5 nights in Keswick)! This place is great. There are no reservations. The first night, we were able to walk in about 5pm and found an open table for us fine. The second time at noon, we had to wait about 5 minutes for a table. The wait is worth it nonetheless! We had the Old Peculiar beer and Old Moot Cider (berries and cherries), nachos and chicken wings. All excellent! For lunch, we had the same drinks, mac and cheese and then the gulash. The lunches were very hot so it took some time to eat them, but both were also excellent meals!
A very busy pub in the heart of Keswick. The goulash is famous for a reason, it was superb! Plenty of real ale on tap too.. my favourite pub I Keswick Food
Great pub!
Beautiful place, good food and top atmosphere
Cozy inside.
Its seems to be always busy, so it must be a popular place to go. The atmosphere is great x
Really nice food just might struggle to get a table on a busy evening.
Cozy pub with a lovely atmosphere! A lot of the other pubs werent serving food at the time between lunch and dinner but luckily the Dog and Gun was. I had a really nice vegan burger, and my husband had a nice looking crispy chicken burger. The next table had the goulash which looked really good.
Great service. Loved the vegan Hungarian goulash
Great food goulash is its most famous dish yum
Well to start, I ordered the mac n cheese, couldn t have that, so I ordered the buttermilk chicken burger, along with my mam. Both of our chicken were dry and chewy. Only a dribble of bbq sauce was offered, so I found the whole meal very dry and very bland, onion rings were nothing special, I could cook my own frozen onion rings for the same outcome. Overall nothing special, but bland and I m a bit disappointed. Another thing is that I am unable to drink coke and Pepsi, no other diet drinks are available apart from water . Wow, more bland!
Surprised by all the positive reviews for the goulash... Ours were cold and the dumplings were a soggy disaster...
Great food and cheap too but not reflected in the price and dogs are allowed too
A small but great pub. Food was very reasonably priced especially for the portion sizes and was absolutely delicious. Lots of variety and it was really good quick service. It can be very busy and hard to get into but definitely worth it if you can. Drinks are a bit pricier than some other places but worth it!
Excellent,gd selection of ale &old peculiar!
Very busy.
Friday afternoon before the beer festival. It was busy but we got a table and as it was Friday, ordered fish chips and mushy peas. Not the biggest portion but big enough to satisfy. Fish was lovely and fresh, creamy with excellent batter. Chips were cooked well and the peas very tasty. Will eat here again.
The best food ever
It is worthy to dining here. The signature dish is really delicious. The staff is so nice. We enjoy our dinner so much. Thank you.
Great pub, great food, great atmosphere and dog friendly. Tends to be less busy than other pubs in Keswick.
Great pub very dog friendly food was excellent
Bloody lovely goulash highly recommended the food in here.
Today, April 25, after a day of trekking, we went to have a delicious lasagna for lunch in a very pleasant and cozy atmosphere I recommend it 100%
Very nice stylish pub. Good meal. But going for each beer and pay and serve it ourselves is not my choice.
Great place for a pint and the Hungarian goulash! Dog friendly pub and great atmosphere
It is a very popular pub. Good beers and the goulash was brilliant!
A great place for real ale and has retained all its character after the refurb earlier in the year. But why oh why have they put all those scatter cushions in. Probably look lovely when the place is empty (its never empty) but if you can ever find a seat, you can pretty much guarantee that most of the scatter cushions have gravitated to that area or theyre in the window blocking that. No room for coats and backpacks with all those cushions. Come on D&G this is a pub well used by walkers and we dont need cushions!
Nice dog friendly pub in the centre of Keswick
A nice little place to chill and have a drink after a good walk. Dog friendly.
A bit rich charging over 7 quid for this hilariously small bowl of 8 chicken strips . Pretty tasteless to boot - pro tip: avoid the food
Dog friendly pub in center of Keswick
Never had food but from what I noticed everyone was tucking in and enjoying it busy bar but you dont wait to be served tables cleared quickly thoroughly enjoyed this pub and will definitely go back when back in Keswick keep up the good work
Beautiful pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, very charming! Staff were friendly and open to chatting, we didnt have any food on our visit as the menu was a bit limited for us but seemed very popular with the other patrons!
A Keswick and Lake District institution. Popular and generally busy. A good range of beers.
Got drink in broken glass, cider without ice and berries ( other customers got them ) Goulash was more mushroom soup than goulash, over-spiced with paprika salty and really not nice dish. I love goulash and i know there is many types and every chef cooks it a bit personalised, but this was just bad
We had a couple of the prize winning pies and a beer sat at the front, watching the world go by, great staff and very helpful
Nice and quiet during week. Good food and really nice local beers on draft. Staff friendly .
A lively popular pub where goulash seems to be the star of the show, and for good reason, both the veggie and beef ones were fab! Portions are HUGE though - we had the small and still struggled to finish, the standard would be wayyy too much for one!
Good atmosphere it was very busy. The pies are award winning and looked lovely. Sadly the same couldnt be said about the lasagne that night.
The best Pub in town
Food not good quality good atmosphere great for a drink
One of cosies pubs in Keswick..Good beer and good food..famous for lovely goulash
Traditional cosy Keswick pub. Great beers, brilliant atmosphere.
Excellent food great service a really nice pub I would recommend going if youre in keswick
We finally were able to get in and have some of the delicious goulash. The goulash came out a little on the cool side but the staff soon remedied it. The standard portion is large and comes with a dumpling and 2 slices of garlic bread. My advice is to get there at 12 midday as the doors open otherwise you may be disappointed and unable to find somewhere to sit as it fills up really quick. We have tried numerous times but have always been unable to find a seat but yesterday we were second in. We would definitely recommend the goulash.
Great dog friendly pub with a cosy atmosphere. Also the best beef and ale pie Ive had as long as I can remember!
If youre looking for good food and great beer then look no further, we popped in for a bowl of goulash and we werent disappointed. We had probably the best pint of Old Peculiar weve ever had, if you like or if youve never tried goulash then this is the right place you wont be disappointed. All the staff were polite and friendly and clearly proud of the service they provide.
Unfortunately after the refurbishment the main pub smells of stale grease / fat and is not a pleasant environment. Real shame as the pub used to be lovely and very atmospheric.
Lovely place to eat goulash fabulous
A typical atmospheric English pub. Dogs are allowed.
Very busy but still got good service. Food was very nice.
Busy, great selection of drinks
It is a very popular and nice place with an unfriendly person at the counter. My espresso was served in a cold cup, which made me unhappy. But you will for sure enjoy a much better experience, its a good place.
Dog friendly pub. Great food and drink.
Lovely old pub, friendly helpful staff, great food AND dog friendly
Busy pub and good value for money.
Excellent dog friendly pub. Mac and Cheese was delish.
5 stars again, Hungarian goulash is superb. Service friendly and quick. Dive in for a meal or a quick drink from their great selection.
Excellent goulash, great pints, just an around lovely pub
Food and Drink were fabulous on our recent Keswick trip. Hungarian Beef Goulash was bang on form and Real Ales divine as always. This is defo one of the best pubs, so we have to go there every time.
