Packhorse Ct, Keswick CA12 5JB, United Kingdom
Traditional inn with flagstone floors and local beers on tap, plus modern and classic menus.
Lovely pub. Lovely food. Good atmosphere. Probably my favourite pub in Keswick
Amazing food and fabulous service. Staff are friendly and helpful and the upstairs is more restaurant style with table service, the downstairs bar is more pub like and order at the bar. The food was fantastic with good sized portions. I would highly recommend a meal here.
Steak and ale pie definitely worth having. Nice environment but fairly busy in the evening, hard to get a table. Dog friendly pub which is always great, would recommend
Not cheap and very average. Only went in here as everywhere else was packed on a Sunday evening. Burger & chips, fish & chips, and kids chicken nuggets. 2 flat pepsis and a Shandy. £55. My burger patty was good, the bun was over toasted and had a crunch. Was like a hot. Chips were tough. Fish was disappointing. All looked a bit miserable in the board 🤣.
Very friendly staff, highly recommend the steak and ale pie with homemade chips and the chargrilled chicken was lovely too!
Visited the pub for lunch early Sunday. A nice pub in middle of Keswick selling the usual Robinson ales. We went for the chicken burger and chips and scampi and chips. Food was tasty and was most welcome.on a typical damp day.
Had a delicious lunch at this pub while on a visit to Keswick on market day. It's right in the centre of town, hidden away in a little courtyard just off the busy main street. Dating from the 17th century, this former coaching inn still looks very olde-worlde inside, with its wooden beams and panelling, old stone fireplace, and some nice pictures of Lakeland scenery on the walls. There's a spacious bar area, cosy nooks, and upstairs dining areas on two levels. A large and well stocked bar with a good choice of ales. Clean and accessible downstairs toilet. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I was served quickly, and the server came back during my meal to ask me how it was. I could not fault the food at all! There was so much to choose from on the daytime menu, from sandwiches to traditional pub favourites and a few more adventurous dishes. Some good options for vegetarians, and there was a cheaper early bird menu and a children's menu. I had the chargrilled chicken breast topped with haggis and black pudding, in a piquant peppercorn sauce, served with chunky chips and mixed veg. The meal was hot, well cooked, generous portions and very flavoursome! The chicken was really tender. Nice glass of Merlot too. Not a cheap lunch, but it was worth every penny! Would definitely come here again.
Very average food for the price you pay. Prices are much higher than listed online!! We chose this pub due to the many many 5 star reviews however were quite disappointed with the food. We spent £17 each on our meals- steak pie with chips and veg, and fish & chips with mushy peas. The food lacked flavour and chips were a bit soggy, however good portion size and friendly staff. If somebody could introduce the kitchen to some salt and herbs the food could have so much potential.
Place was nice, as were the staff. Main meals were quite good, though we found the soup of the day (Cauliflower and Parmesan) to be rather bland and watery in taste, very disappointing overall, and the chips whilst nice and chunky were ok, but werent as good as weve had elsewhere in the region on our trip, or Keswick itself for that matter. We did find that this place had room for us though for dinner, add its much bigger inside than other Pubs in the immediate area.
Possibly the best pub in Keswick. Good beer plenty of tellys and a good pool table, loads of space and a great atmosphere. Didnt eat but the food looked good, staff are mint and its dog friendly.
Just opened, chef and staff seemed a bit stressed, but very very friendly, food was not as good as I think it can be,mainly lukewarm soup with too much balsamic vinegar or whatever it was, fish and chips were lovely, will definitely give it a try again.
The beef cobbler was delicious.
Good food, great atmosphere.
Yet another WS outlet that promises so much from the outside and its then a total let down inside. Biggest problem I found here was the service levels, 20 minutes wait having ordered on the app (the pub was very quiet at the time), many tables were not cleared of used plates etc. Another large open plan area that could so easily have been sectioned to provide a more warm, cosy atmosphere, with more comfortable furnishings.
We visited here for a quick lunch yesterday. We didnt find the service to be very friendly. They were advertising sandwiches that they didnt have which was a shame. We had beef sandwiches and the beef was burned all around the edges and black. I presume cold beef slices were put in the bread and grilled as it got burned. The gravy was pretty tasteless too and for £11 a sandwich it was a little disappointing!
Lovely old traditional pub. Great friendly atmosphere. Food really good. Early bird menu is small but you get four or five choices. Got the chicken burger and I would recommend this. Good value for money. Will return and have already on many occasions.
Sadly food was served cold and partly cooked roast potatoes
Excellent overall
Very pleased we called in here. The food was very good and the staff all very helpful - dog friendly too.
Service was good. The food I got was not worth the cost at all - was just like the microwave Indian meals you can get at Tesco (same naan etc) but cost £17
At the time of our visit, they were the only one serving food in Keswick! It was lovely.
Not from round here, took a stab in the dark and loved it, perfect end to a perfect day, food and atmosphere 100% thank you
W place, loved it, would go again
Sunday roast was worst we have ever had. Beef and Pork was tough and dry, roast came with courgettes? Carrots which weren t cooked. Staff were not very friendly, no apple sauce with a pork roast as they ran out.. 2 roast potatoes with the food but whole plate of mash? For context we were visiting from London and came at 2:30pm on a Sunday so not sure if we got last bits of meat / no veg was left? It s a shame because we chose this place based on reviews so if you are looking for somewhere to grab a roast I would look elsewhere!!
Great food and service.
Called in for a drink lovely little pub great atmosphere.
Nice pub, quirky interior. Staff were friendly and the drinks were nice. Not a lot of choice of IPAs but overall good.
Years since I last visited. Had Sunday lunch today , a bit disappointing if Im honest. Dont think I would go back again.
Decent scran
Great little pub, hidden in a courtyard, just off main street. We all ordered the steak pie, which came with veg and chunky chips. It was nice to get actual proper pie, made with suet pastry and filled with steak and gravy, delicious
Don t waste your money. We d read recent reviews on trip advisor, a lot not good but thort we d give it a go. Eaten here for years but tonight was a disaster. Are the onion rings home made, we asked. Yes, we make our own beer batter was the reply. Food arrived, obviously frozen onion rings, thick batter. Yuk. Scampi was also cooked from frozen, small n chewy. Yuk. Asked if food was okay. No, was our reply, Debs, the waitress , asked what was wrong, we explained. She clearly hadn t listened, when we came to paying bill, we asked what chef had said about our concerns, her reply was, she hadn t told him, that was what they served. We refused to play for onion rings, rude is not an adequate description of her replies or attitude. Customer service, hasn t got a clue. We paid bill, without the onion rings and left. We d usually eat there at least 3 times for a weeks holiday, but won t be going again.
Nice place for a early evening pint. The lager was quite expensive compared to other places. Service
What a disappointing experience Staff couldnt care less. Quite rude actually. Burger horrid. Fish and chips bland. Had to order at bar. Toilets disgusting. Would not go back.
Just had drinks
A more traditional Cumbrian boozer, not bad but nothing amazing. Food the same, traditional fare but all a bit stodgy and bland. Cannelloni was mostly just a pot of melted cheese and the gravy on the pie was bisto. Much better options out there for food these days fortunately but if you like 70s style Cumbrian pubs you might enjoy this place.
We normally enjoy visiting the pack horse on our fairly frequent visits to Keswick but on this occasion we were given somewhat of a rude awakening of the commercial aspects of this establishment, whether they were busy or not We ordered drinks at the bar (and not given what we d ordered!) and as there were no tables free downstairs we took our drinks upstairs and took a seat. A lady approached us and asked us if we were ready to order food, and we replied that we were only having a drink. She appeared to accept this and walked away, however, a few minutes later she rather abruptly told us that the table was only available if we were ordering food. We were thanked for our cooperation in a very condescending manner Attitude and overall ser- abysmal in our opinion - avoid this place like the plague. Grudgingly, I very much doubt we ll be back
Tried my first Sunday Roast here and it was very tasty. The portions were also relatively large - the taste could be refined a little. Some of the tables are a bit small - sat down along the aisle. I would recommend looking for a place on the first floor.
Nice food and one of the few places in Keswick that served food until 9pm
Great service and loverly home cooked food.
So disappointing, the place was really dirty we planned to have Sunday lunch, but the tables were dirty the place looked like it needed to be cleaned so we left
Best meal I ve had in a pub in a while- came quickly and tasted delicious
Quirky layout in this bar, bit like hogwarts, but fantastic food, large portions and great staff. Had roast beef dinner for evening meal, could not eat it all, but lovely. To
A fabulous pub with a good selection of beers and great food, the staff were very welcoming as was the pub itself with log fires and warm lighting we escaped a heavy downpour with a nice beer here.
I had the steak, very well cooked and overall a really nice meal The staff were very friendly and and nice atmosphere
Very pleasant and welcoming
Generally the food was good quality as for a pub. My friends ordered some really nice looking dishes and veggie stroganoff was amazing. Im only giving 4 stars as my veggie wellington was very random. The wellington itself was nice - very peppery (as in spice) and i liked that but the tomato sauce didnt really fit it. Potatoes and veg were very plain and dry. Service was fantastic, like in a proper restaurant! Fast and kind, very attentive in spite very busy pub. Atmosphere was okay, very traditional space, but me and my friends agreed that the music was a bit too loud. Dog friendly area too. Vegetarian options: Theres a fair choice of veggie dishes.
Very nice food indeed
Lovely food
Lovely friendly staff, ale delicious, unfortunately that didnt apply to the food we were served, we left most of it . Very expensive, which I dont mind if the food is good, but this was far from it. The rice though was excellent.
Great food, very generous portions. Accommodated us with a new baby Staff were lovely and very efficient. Food
Lovely pub. Food was very good. 2 of us had the ribs that were so tender. 1 of us had the steak and ale pie and loved it. Choice of beers and guns were excellent. Drinks were reasonably priced. The food a little higher than expected but hard to criticise when the quality was that good.
Prebooked for Wednesday 21 August for a meal, and quiz night. The 2 waitresses on the middle level were really friendly and amazing at their jobs. The pie was delicious, and the quiz was great too.
Booked for 18:00hrs on a mid week evening. Seated early at 17:15hrs... glad we did, got V busy. Good plentiful and hearty all washed down with a couple of scoops. Food : 4/5
Great food and service
Good pub grub. Good local real ale. Steaks requested medium rare were more like well done, dark brown i.e cooked longer than diners on our table had expected - overcooked in their view, though would suit me; we had recommended they order rare if wanted medium. Good quality beef. Is this a north-south divide thing I wonder? Colouring sheet but no colour or other pencils or crayons. Waitress unhelpful
Lovely food
Just called in for a drink was busy with people eating food looking good will definitely dine next time
Amazing food! Just what you need after a day of trekking. We went in the evening and you get table service which was very prompt. During the day when we have been you order at the bar.
Nice pub. Good choice of beers with a friendly atmosphere.
Really nice pub, enjoy having a couple whilst visiting Keswick
Absolutely fabulous food
Been here several times over the years. Food always well cooked and presented well. Good choice of beers and wines. Food
Great food and friendly staff.
Extremely dog friendly and everyone super welcoming and friendly. We really enjoyed our visit and could have stayed all day. We had delicious and great value toasties. We will defo come back
Lively bar in centre of Keswick. Good mix of locals and tourists. 3 real ales and a good selection of drinks. Friendly staff. Service : 5/5 |
Missed the mark on this occasion! Simple drinks order wrong. Food was average unfortunately. And the main point...... Rude staff! Not acceptable at all. It costs nothing to be nice..... I will be looking elsewhere until the staff learn some manners. I welcome some feedback from the owner/manager of this establishment.
Really friendly and accommodating staff on our stop over drink from Harrogate to The Lakes.
Good range of food and drinks available. Fish and chips ok batter on gish a bit wet. Food
We stopped here for an evening meal. Delicious food, would recommend the mushroom casserole and haggis and black pudding stack. Best food I ve had out in a long time. Will definitely be back!
Great pub good food friendly staff and dog friendly Wheelchair accessibility: Easy access for wheelchairs on the ground floor Food : 5/5 |
Great food, friendly helpful staff and good portions of delicious food
Nice food great pub
Great pub food and lovely staff
Fantastic place and the food is superb. Will definitely return and would highly recommend to anyone in the area. Great friendly staff as well thanks.
We unfortunately went here our first night for dinner in Keswick - then went to the fellpack the following night to pay the same price for MUCH better REAL food. A pie and mash, staple food up north, was sour mush - the mash tasted like vinegar and the pie was minging. Scampi and chips, how can you mess that up? Don t worry - the packhorse can EASILY destroy what is simple fried food. £36 wasted - save your cash and go to the fellpack!
Nice atmosphere enjoyed my visit .
Rude, unfriendly and abrupt staff! Plenty of friendlier places to go in town.
Very good,meal was lovely
Was in with a group of friends on Saturday, costa del solway were fantastic, great music. I was made to feel like a naughty schoolboy however, by the waitress with grey hair and glasses. I had to shout my wife over to come to another table as someone was asking me a question I was unsure of. The waitress walked past and told me rather loudly to sshhhh. A bit rude if Im being honest. I was hardly being loud and obnoxious and wasnt drunk....
Nice food. Ham and eggs was amazing! Good selection of ales. Super dog friendly!
Nice meal, reasonably priced
Great little pub in the heart of Keswick. Very accommodating and knowledgeable staff. Food was very tasty. Highly recommended Kid-friendliness: Very accommodating towards kids with a great selection of food for them..
Ate here after walking around town looking for somewhere with a good menu. Best pub food Ive had in a long time, chose the beef cobbler with mash, delicious. Staff were friendly, helpful to seat us and provided an excellent recommendation from the real ale selection. Would definitely eat here again
Nice pub, pleasant atmosphere and not too pricey
Excellent welcoming pub with friendly service and honest home cooked style food. Dogs welcomed as well.
Delicious food and atmosphere, but quite expensive
Delightful fudge. Many types for the various taste buds.
Fantastic food, really generous portions. The service was great.
Band on a Friday night was really good place. Expensive drinks but Keswick milking tourists now and charging city prices for everything.
Great food especially steak and ale pie
Only popped in for one drink but nice pub with friendly locals and staff.
Really good food, proper pub meals, good beers and drinks too
Just called in for a quick drink on a sunny evening. Sat in a pleasant outside area. Nice staff and dog friendly.
Nice little pub with good service and good food, we had the Sunday roast which was really nice and reasonably priced. Good selection of drinks also.
Lunch time birthday treat. The food was excellent Food
Dogs are very welcome there
Good food, I felt as a solo traveller the effort to accept me was obvious on the greeters face but ended with a good meal.
Good laule boozer,legendary.
Excellent food.
This is a busy pub, so it may be best to book if dining in the evening. However, staff managed to squeeze us in when we arrived unannounced during bank holiday/half term. We all really enjoyed the food with the beef daube being a highlight. Good selection of real ale and kept well. With friendly helpful staff. I went back the next night as well as I liked it so much.
The food waz amazing
Good pub food and a good selection of beers I had the chargrilled chicken and seasonal veg very nice
Really lovely food, great choice and quick, friendly service
Very nice good and lovely staff
Pack horse was packed mainly with people with pooches ! Does everyone in Keswick have a dog ? Beer and wine was nice food looked appetising
Top marks for everybody who works in this pub
We had some lovely meals here. I highly recommend the steak and ale pie, and the ham salad was delicious
Pleasant local pub serving quality beers and food. Dog friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed lunch during a recent visit on market day.I had the fish and chips cooked in beer batter, lovely, if slightly expensive, but worth a try if you are in the area
Lovely pub with great service and food. Good choice and quality!
Dropped I for a drink, nice selection of ales to sample and gin options for my wife, pleasant pub, friendly helpful staff. Good atmosphere, worth a visit Parking: Cash, card or app payments, large car park.
Food beer and room were all brilliant. Stayed on business and will be back. An unmissable gem. Oh have breakfast..it was tasty and customer friendly service was A1
Excellent Guiness, Excellent atmosphere
Only popped in for a drink, but the menu sounds good, so we will be back soon for food. Great 80s music also plays over the sound system Service
Good selection of Beers. Good service. Fantastic food, good sized portions, reasonable prices Food : 5/5
Brilliant
Great Food
Vibe is great, food was pretty bad. Would recommend for nothing more than drink and a good spot to hang out.
Gorgeous food
Not been here, but the photos look lovely
Well over priced £17 for a small burger and a 12 over cooked chips. Never again!
Just had a pint but it was great.
Unfortunately there are not enough stars on this review to credit this venue for the quality of their beef Sunday dinner. For me, its the very best Ive had that I can ever remember. Food quality and quantity certainly hut the spot, the staff were extremely attentive. Robinsons brewery, this should be your benchmark, hats off to the Pack Horse.
Great live music for a Saturday night but unfortunately charging almost £9 for a 200ml bottle of Prosecco was very misguided by The Packhorse - such a shame! Maybe a price review is required!
Very nice pub grub, just whats needed after a massive hike,
Came here as part of a weekend away. Food was brilliant, yummy and big portions! The food also came out really quickly. The team tried to accommodate us as best they could given there was a few of us! Only downside is the pale ale did not taste right so we sent it back, and then whilst one of the group was doing a speech (as it was an occasion) the waitress kept trying to ask everyone to pay. It would have been nicer to wait a few minutes rather than ending up one of the group having to sort out payment during it.
Staff where friendly, didnt order any food but noticed the food looked amazing. Pub was fairly quiet but where playing good music didnt have buzz of some of the other pubs but one of the reasons I went in was it looked quiter. Food
Cracking food
Great pub food home made fresh vegetables and proper chips
Gorgeous food, lovely staff
Great food, slight issue with side dish of onion rings as could have been done a bit longer, but were OK, the bottle of wine we ordered was £25 which they all were was quite a mark up as bottle retailed at under £6 So would suggest better wine or different prices on bottles thats either better or less They take money before you get your food Good job it was decent All in all would eat here again but paying after they might get more in tips unless they have had problems with ppl not paying before leaving
Food was amazing. I got vegan curry with chips. Prices were mid for area. Nice area to sit and lovely staff
The food was delicious, but the music was too loud and not appropriate for the age of the majority of clientele.
Lovely Inn just off the main square selling excellent Robinsons real ale. Paulicarus had Dizzy Blond. Very popular pub with good pub food. Seating can be found over 3 levels. Has a lovely old world pub charm. Back in 2023 with Ic and Flic and as good as ever. Lovely pint of Cumbrian Way.
Lovely establishment, old pub, with fab meals, have been there before. We had the chargrilled chicken breast with haggis, black pudding with peppercorn sauce. Choice of chips or mash, veg or salad, made a filling and tasty meal. Will happily go there again when we next visit.
Wow. Did not disappoint after leaving two previous pubs due to not liking the menu..... Absolutely beautiful Wheelchair accessibility: All leveled flooring
Good pub
Amazing food and really friendly staff
Great evening doing the quiz (Weds nights) Excellent selection of well kept real ales, Trooper was brilliant. Deffo recommend
Had a lovely meal. Good choice on the menu Vegetarian options: Mushroom brie and cranberry Wellington. Mmmm Food : 5/5 |
Iovely pub, food excellent!!
Food was tasty and reasonably priced, staff friendly and helpful, we both had warm baguettes pulled pork and chicken with ham salad and coleslaw, delicious , would recommend
Met friends here for a meal on a busy Saturday night. Not been to Keswick before. Two had burgers two had the vegetarian Wellington with chips and veg. The Wellington was smothered with a too spicy sauce that overpowered the Wellington. Veg was overcooked carrots and watery cabbage. Chips were cold and greasy. At £16 a dish I was disappointed. The friends who had the burgers werent impressed either. Vegetarian options: The Wellington was disappointing, the sauce overpowering.
Had drinks. Pleasant staff and good service.
lovely relaxing evening. great background music. not to many people at this time of year. best place we have eaten in keswick for a long time .
Decent selection of drink. Beef cobbler meal and beef burger meal spot on. Waiting staff spot on. Bar staff spot on. Service spot on. Lovely pub with a mixture of locals and tourists. Great atmosphere.
You have a choice of hostleries in Keswick but make sure you visit the Pack Horse, especially on Quiz night!. Great food, great beer and a quiz master who is a sight to behold! Vegetarian options: Plenty & vegan
Really nice pint, welcoming atmosphere.
Came here for a meal for 11 but table was mixed up but dagmaer sorted problem thanks beautiful people with a beautiful place thank u lake district is a wonder of our world amazing
Good grub and thats what you are generally after in the Lakes.. Beer selection is a bit poor, but thats because its locked to Robinsons brewery
Great pub, food was brilliant, dogs welcome
Good pub
Good food, cosy atmosphere, friendly staff
Excellent quality and service. Will be back soon
Nice pub staff great. Food was 5 star as well. Love this pub always feel welcome
Just popped in for a drink. Staff very friendly and good choice of beer.
One of many great pubs in keswick. Can be a little quieter than other pubs due to being hidden off the main part of town but is well worth a visit. The two bar staff on Tuesday evening were very friendly and we caught them dancing behind the bar as we walked in, very funny. Returned here again some 8 months later, the pub was quite a lot busier than before which makes the pub even better.
Old school Pub - glad we stumbled onto it Good old fashioned pub lunch - nice atmosphere Food
First class food and good service. Very clean With nice carpet. Recommended. Very pleased on our visit December 10th 2032. Food
