The Wainwright, Lake Rd, Keswick CA12 5BZ, United Kingdom
Dog friendly free house with eight real ales, mostly from Cumbrian brewers. Good range of pub food using local ingredients where possible.
Popped in for a pint, friendly service from the bar. Good atmosphere and an interesting.collection of coasters from around the world above the bar.A screen showing Hill walkers playing in a corner.
Excellent selection of ales and a warm welcoming atmosphere after a long day hiking.
One of the best pies I've had. Amazing. Great selection of local beers too. Discount for CAMRA members.
Small number of tables but able to get a good seat. Lady behind the bar & serving the food was excellent, really friendly & helpful. Food was really lovely & portions were massive. Really good value for money.
Such a lovely little pub, great selection of drinks. Atmosphere was very comfortable. Extra points for the Doctor Who quote, many respect for anyone that does that!
Best pub ever!!!! You will meet the whole life’s worth of dogs in here. Perfect for dog lovers. Food was so good! The steak was cooked for medium rare and it delivered! The chips were made freshly, so creamy. Huge cod, thinly wrapped in batter. Tried the local gin from Grasmere, so good! Nothing like bombay or hendricks - which taste a bit too alcoholic for me. That was smooth! Highly recommend.
Real beer, great food, lovely ambiance. There are always a good range of well kept beers on tap including some local ones. We went for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed burgers and the sour dough baguettes. You wait a little for the food but that’s because it’s cooked fresh and is well worth the wait. The pub is full of walking memorabilia which adds to the experience.
Outstanding pub! What a find this was. Local ales and plenty to choose from. Dog friendly and easy to get to. The staff are wonderful and chatty with a great sense of humour. The food was phenomenal!!! Had the steak and ale pie which was just melt in the mouth. Husband has the burger and was super tasty. Had to have pudding of sticky toffee pudding with ice cream which was also amazing. Friends are travelling up here later this week and will be recommending that they stop here.
A group get together
Proper pub, not ponced up

Decent pub with great Ale, very dated inside and could do with some tlc.
A proper pub! Had steak pie which was delicious
Best walkers pub in Keswick with a brilliant range of ales with discount for CAMRA members. The GoPro videos can be dusted but add to the ambience. The Victorian gents loos are just wonderful
Its a pub, sells beer, serves food etc. Gets exceptionally busy on a Saturday.
Lovely little pub in the heart of Keswick
Nice pub. Service a little stiff and food a little heavy - normal pub food!
Great place, great beer , great food , great staff
Very pleasant staff and very welcoming
Great pub, always friendly staff, good quality food and drink
Proper traditional pub with friendly staff and real ales
Best real pub in Keswick, good quality food, friendly service, good variety of beers, homely welcoming and not too ram packed (like dog n gun) My fave Food
Nice Sunday lunch
Amazing food, gave it 4 star only because it was busy and had to try couple times for a seat but I suppose that reflects how popular the pub is for all the above. Would definitely return, I had the goulash...amazing
Nice pub with a good selection of beers, for us the amount and strong smell of dogs put us off eating.
Great little stop off while tourism-ING!
Excellent pub definitely go again on my visit to Keswick friendly staff five stars
Limited menu but covers all requirements, including vegetarian. Good home made food in a traditional style pub focused on fell walking of course. Nice favourable experience
Tasty food had the chicken burger, dog friendly!
Great traditional pub with excellent choice of local beers and good value for money
Great pub ran by lovely local people
Good wee free house pub. Good ale selection and very dog friendly. I didnt eat there but the food coming out looked good.
A couple of pints after a walk around the lake or up a crag is rewarding.
Very coeliac friendly

Excellent Ale..enjoyed few pints of Wainwright..staff friendly and helpful..food great recommend Sunday Lunch..toilets clean
Friendly, bit rustic,good atmosphere
Good beer and location but the staff were very rude, unfriendly and seemed to find it a chore to serve us.
Accidently stumbled in out of the rain and decided to have a bit of lunch. And what a good decision that turned out to be!! Huge portions and all delicious food. Chips were lovely, batter was super crispy. Chilli was fabulous. Staff super friendly. Would recommend!
Great little find in Keswick for lunch! Although we are all so full we might not need dinner. The food was fantastic, reasonably quick for such a nice meal and the portions are generous. Nice selection of beers too
Small but perfect. A popular pub, great atmosphere. Always busy but the service is great. Very friendly staff. Parking: Parking available in town, but not specifically for the pub.
Great food and even has gluten free options which is great as my husband is celiac. Would certainly recommend
Great food as always!
The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly
Great pub, food acceptable, but nothing to write home about.
Great ales, sat watching the sun set
Dog friendly!
Great selection of beers. Food looked great but we never tried as already eaten
Do not go for Sunday dinner it must be the worst I have had in 60 years on this earth the meat was steam not roasted the mashed potato had to much pepper or horseradish in
Dog friendly pub seving good food & ales
Good food at a good price. Great servic friendly staff
Loads of drinks options, didnt eat but it looked lovely
Good real ales, food smelled good but we didnt eat here. Always quite busy.
The toilets in this pub are the worst I have come across in a very long time. In the gents 2 sinks with only one cold water tap that works and no soap and it was like this last time I visited in March 2024, thought there was a plumbing issue then but clearly not. Looks like the owners just can t be bothered to sort out the basics. Makes you wonder what the kitchen is like. Won t be going back.
Great local pub to have an awesome local Burger.
Weve been here many times and never disappointed . Its a, brilliant pub in Keswick and highly recommend
Laid back pub, serving a good selection of beers. The perfect spot to rehydrate after a day out on the mountains
Great range of Real Ale.
Staying in Keswick for the weekend, we had Sunday lunch today here, service wasn t good, we were not offered a glass for our j2o s just help yourself to straws which was difficult to drink as the straws were dropping right in the bottle all the time, a glass would have been nice, obviously they don t like washing glasses, we waited ages for our food as everyone was, but when it arrived it was the worst mash we had ever had really lumpy , roasties were hard, dinner didn t taste right, and I still have a upset tummy now, so something wasn t prepared right , I am a chef myself, so I knew it wasn t right, cross this place off our list for next time.
Great little pub with friendly, helpful staff and a really good atmosphere. Huge selection of real ales and a brilliant menu. Id highly recommend The Wainwright to anyone visiting the area. Food : 5/5
Dogs are wellcome and you can smell it and hear it, yesterday a lot of dogs where inside and there was a lot of barking and the whole pub smelled like wet dog.
nice pub but drinks are really expensive £6:40p for a pint of lager
Nice pub friendly and nice atmosphere nice food
Fantastic little place, great atmosphere, food amazing and will definitely return
Fantastic pub experience with very friendly and welcoming staff. Very lively atmosphere. Good selection of drinks and an excellent food menu.
Great real ale pub. Dog friendly
Nice pub. Good selection of ales. Just tucked away from the busier pubs Futher in to the town. Still busy but Ive never found it rammed unlike some of the more central pubs. My pub of choice.
One of the best pubs in Keswick. Great beer and great food. Fell Tinderbox is often on and is a great West Coast IPA.
Beautiful Sunday dinner served by very attentive and polite chatty staff
Good food and nice selection of Beers
Great pint friendly staff
Lovely atmosphere and home made food.
Only called for a drink. Very busy beers are good. Friendly staff and customers.
Very good and warm in a nice atmosphere
Enjoyed 2 IPA brands and sat outside. Interior quite dark, with television to entertain the punters..
Never had food but lovely bar and the people having food all looked happy bar staff very good and some of the best prices in Keswick will definitely return when back in Keswick thank you
Great pub with a super collection of real ales, sadly didn t have time to sample them all. Called for lunch as well and sampled their fish finger baguette - absolutely delicious!
Good food and an excellent choice of beers. The only downside is the overpowering smell of toilet disinfectant as you walk in.
Decent, friendly staff.
Worst pint ever
Staff, service food and beer all top class. Enjoy every visit!
Very good staff/service. Nice atmosphere. I was very grateful that the barman pointed out that I had given him £10 too much - not everybody is that honest. The chips were a bit undone for my taste but otherwise food was good.
Excellent pub, excellent service, excellent staff, excellent food and excellent owners!!! Love it And continue to! Food
Decent beers. Wainwright theme a bit over the top and manufactured for me.
Beautiful sunday roast
We always make a point of visiting this pub when in Keswick. Normally, its a good choice of ales and the food is brilliant. This time, I had the Cumberland sausage with Mash, and the gravy was awesome. Food : 5/5
quient pub nice pub food and good service
Great food down to earth place
Fab local pub, Wainwrights and an array of ales, with the added bonus of 10% discount with Camra membership. Well worth session or two Service
Perfect place to stop for a bite! The food was amazing, free WiFi, and they allow dogs. Best meal Ive had since Ive been here.
Sunday lunch to die for and dog friendly
Lovely pub with a good selection of drinks. The food was good with some large dishes. The gravey with the pie was spot on.
Great beer and fantastic food. The fish and chips were plentiful and cooked to perfection.
Bustling pub, friendly staff
Great place with reasonably priced dishes. Good atmosphere too.
Food good but beer nothing to write home about which was slightly disappointing since this is a Camra pub.
Wonderful selection of beers Very helpful young barman.
Great real ale pub justifies its place in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Must visit if you like your beer. Comfortable and welcoming. Ic and Flic love it. Best real ale selection in Keswick. Super food.
Went in this pub as the reviews were brilliant machine coffee was awful. Bar man was not friendly at all which is the reason we chose to leave and not eat as we had planned to for my birthday. Service
Good little pub in a nice part of the lake district. Food was tasty and priced well. Friendly atmosphere and good service.
Great pub great beer lovely old pub vibe
My wife and I dined and had drinks recently in The Wainwright. To say we were impressed is an understatement, the meals were delicious, with generous portions and the Real Ale superb. On every visit to Keswick this is where we will be heading.. almost forgot to mention, very good polite staff too. Cheers, well be back.
I thought the dog area was small, but it was a good place I would go back
Great pub in Keswick. A really decent array of beers. Didnt eat here but the food looked nice. The locals were friendly too. Cracking pub
Staff are very friendly and were happy to help with food and drinks order which was different to what was on the menu.
Nice pub
£5-60 pint of stout Expensive wont see me again.
Nice pub ,very busy.
Nice place, dog friendly. Staff were a bit rude about me ordering a chip butty .. which was all unnecessarily confusing. I ordered it, then I was told they can t do a chip butty, so I asked if they have bread and chips, then I was told I couldn t order them together, so I just ordered chips, then someone came over and said I could order a bread roll to go with it, but by then I was fed up and said no thanks. Chips were homemade and very good, service needs work.
This is a spacious pub with a front and back room. Its comfortable and warm in winter so worth a visit. Plenty of walking information and videos showing in the back area in honour of Wainwright. The front room is brighter and looks onto the street. Worth a visit.
Independently owned with up to 7 Cumbrian cask ales pouring plus another two from further afield. 10% discount for CAMRA members if you remember to ask. Plenty of AW memorabilia on the walls if interested?
Propper pub, great staff, great beer and great food. Love this place.
Looks like they have smartened it up and I would consider eating here as they do gluten free food options.
Great atmosphere....dogs are welcome but there is limited room to sit outdoors
Fantastic fish and chips
Fabulous food, enormous and gorgeous fish and chips. Beautiful local stout. Really smooth. Best mens toilet ever!!
Great food, great service, great pie! Only issue is that the board outside the pub states it serves food til 9. But I saw a family being turned away at 8.45. The board really needs amending to clarify this.
Ok pub. Good to stop for a quick beer after a walk. I havent tried the food so I cant comment on it.
Great choice of beers. Take your camra membership card for a discount.
Great pub serving generous portions of good pub grub.
Nice food and big portions. Good range of beers.
Great real ale pub in the centre of Keswick. Good atmosphere. Dog friendly.
Looks like a great pub from the outside, but theres a lack soul on the inside. Some fantastic urinals in the gents.
Nice pub and serves decent food. Just dont sit near the back because the dreadful smell from the mens toilet wafts out every time someone opens the door...
Piping hot and freshly made. Perfect after a long hike Food
This is a really decent, honest pub with good beer, great food and friendly staff. You cant really ask for much more.
Busy
A bit busy when we arrived, but got a seat quickly. Good pub.
We called in for a light lunch and it was delicious. We opted for the soup of the day which was Minestrone. This very tasty soup was served with a mini loaf of onion bread. Excellent combination. Well be back next time we are in Keswick. Can highly recommend. BTW the food other diners had ordered looked tasty too.
Fantastic selection of very well kept ales. Blinking marvelous
Great selection of real ales, with live updates. free wifi, fantastic staff and good food
Got a beef Sunday roast, portion size was class and the food tasted good aswell. Proper pub vibe, had a good time
Nice little rest and a pint, unfortunately the kitchen was closed for a couple of hours so cant say about the food.

Had a nice beer, dog friendly. So I had another. That went down a treat in the nice environment. So I had another to make sure. Took 7 beers to make sure, but its definitely a lovely place to be!
Nice pint of Swan blonde beer. Good service happy days
If I could give this place more than t stars I would. Came in for a light lunch, had the sloppy Joe with chips and it was amazing! Prices were reasonable as well. Will definitely be coming back!
Went in here with my wife and 2 dogs after walking up scafel pike! I m very fussy when it comes to eating out but I have to say the pub food here was decent! And the atmosphere was great!
Always love calling in here. Good selection of beers. Lovely cosy, friendly atmosphere.
Great food and atmosphere
Excellent food
Great staff , & beer . So all well .. thx ...
Nice beer but very smelly dogs spoilt the atmosphere and put us off having food
Food was very good
Front room very cafe like, back room more like a bar but needs reconfiguring as table with 4 chairs is directly in front of fire, it get very hot, still has a nice atmosphere though
