528 Princess St, Kingston, ON K7L 3S4, Canada
Simple outpost for familiar favorites including lo mein & lemon chicken, with some Thai dishes.
I had the best takeout from VIP! Wow! They made me General Taos Gluten Free and it was amazing! & The chicken fried rice was so fresh! We ate too fast to take a photo!
Well, I made the questionable decision to have lunch here today, and now I'm fervently hoping to avoid any unfortunate gastrointestinal consequences. We sampled the chow mein, sesame shrimp, and fried rice, all of which were unequivocally terrible. The chow mein resembled a two-tone disaster, with half the noodles sporting an unappetizing pale hue, clearly aged. The toppings emitted a peculiar odor. The rice was flavorless, and the shrimp were a salty, battered catastrophe. We should have heeded our instincts upon observing the state of the bathrooms, which appeared to have missed a cleaning schedule by several years. Do yourself a favour: save your money and avoid this dreadful establishment. I’m baffled it's still in business, public health needs to visit this place stat!
New ownership. Seems like everything was made from scratch. I had the soy beans and pork feet soup, and double cooked sliced pork dressed rice to go with it. The soup was a rare to find dish around this part of Ontario. It's excellent. Soup was tasty, full of flavor and the pork had the right texture and flavors. So food wise the chefs knew what they were doing. Definitely will come back for the food. However, they did have problems. The poor girl who was in trial for server position got several orders wrong and everything went to chaos. They certainly need better experienced servers. Or just provide a better training? And they still haven't gotten any prints of menu. I was told to check on dishes provided on a delivery app. I didn't have that on my phone and I wouldn't install any delivery app because of my bad experience with all of them. Anyway, there's a blackboard on the wall from the previous owner, why not utilize that? Hopefully they would get over the minor issues with a newly established restaurant and provide a fine dine in experience in the future.
My friend and I ordered food from here and it was delicious! I highly recommend the Chicken Chop with Black Pepper Sauce with Rice. The appetizers are also really great! And the staff were super nice :)
They reopened again! Absolutely amazing Cantonese cuisine! Their chicken legs are the best!
The food has gone down in quality. The sweet and sour shrimp had wong tong in it... and no ginger in the ginger and beef. (Those aren't ginger)
Ok so this place got a makeover and all the people had changed. Food quality is improving and new items are amazing.
The food is ok, especially if you were craving fast food-like affordable Chinese food. Personally, I think the food is on the saltier side, but the portion sizes are good for the price you pay (1-2 servings per dish, depending on the person). Good for take out, eating solo, eating with small and large groups.
The food is served very slowly. It takes 40 minutes for three dishes. There are three tables of people sitting there. It still takes this long.
Like it
Food was pretty good, and the service was good as well.
I am a regular customer. The barbecued pork is also fat but not greasy. It is rare to have such delicious barbecued pork in Canada. Vegetarian options: Meat can be removed from any dish You can chose to remove meets from any dishes!! Our cook are able to do that for you!!
The restaurant I originally wanted to go to was closed, so I went there as an alternative. Fried rice, fried noodles, stir-fried beef and broccoli, etc. were delicious. The soup with mushrooms and tofu is a bit bland. But overall it was delicious.
It s delicious, the braised chicken with taro and yellow is recommended!
super delicious love it
Food is better than previous owners, but it still doesnt have a printed menu after a month into the business.
The food was served very slowly, the waiter who took the order couldnt speak clearly, and there wasnt even a menu. Highly not recommended
The new owner really knows how to cook. Best Chinese restaurant in Kingston, no doubt!
The new owner and crew are amazing!!
It s great experience with the new menu and owner! The Hongkong style baked rice is really awesome, definitely would come back again !
Very disappointed won t order from there again. Is definitely not like the old vip.
New owner, new menu. Great customer service. Food is better than before, more authentic.
It was extremely, extremely unpalatable. None of the ten dishes were delicious. Kung Pao Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs, Crispy Beef, subverting human cognition. Kingston s biggest scandal
Over priced and very poor quality food
Not like it used to be. We barely got any sweet and sour sauce for our chicken balls, no Plum sauce for the egg rolls, chicken padthai was over the top hot and it used to be sweet, general tsao chicken barely had any sauce on it. Egg rolls we meh where to me they were the best in town. Prices have gone through the roof. Not sure we will go back and this was our go to place. Very disappointed.
Good
The auntie is very nice and the service is very good. The food is served very quickly.
The new chef brought me some surprises. Not all the dishes are great, but many of them are great. I recommend everyone to try them, such as rice rolls, Hainanese chicken rice, black pepper chicken chop rice, black pepper pork chop pasta, and porridge. Very good too! The price is very affordable! The boss aunt is very nice and offers 10% discount on cash. Basically, the average per person is about 20, and the food is very filling.
Pleasant atmosphere, great wait staff and a great meal.
NEW OWNERSHIP! The new owners are so sweet and the food is incredible! Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious and we will definately be back. Give them a try and you wont be disappointed!
Very kind and great food!
Amazing customer service and authentic food!
New owners, new menu! The only place in Kingston to get authentic Hong Kong diner style Cantonese food - congee, rice rolls, baked rice dishes were delicious. Glad these are now finally available in Kingston and we don t need to trek to Toronto just for a simple meal. If you re looking for American-Chinese food, you might be disappointed.
Got the general Tao as well as sweet and sour pork. Food was delicious, however the portions of the meat were quite small, hence the 4 star. Egg rolls were quite possibly the best I ve ever had. Would definitely recommend.
The restaurant finally reopened!!! The canto food is absolutely amazing and delicious. 11/10 Definitely recommend.
Best sketchy chinese place 10/10 will come back many times
Anyone know why they dont answer their phone? Are they closed again?
Great food and affordable prices
New chief and food are really really good, cheaper price with most classic purity Chinese food Parking: Behind the restaurant. More parking spots on the street
Exquisite flavour in Chinese Baked Pork Chop with Rice.
Not the same vip as it used to be. Really bad food quality. Seems like a lot of it is from frozen.
best Chinese food in Kingston. My roommate works in the kitchen and says the owner makes sure the vegetable and meet is fresh everyday. The quality of food is reliable.
Although I would not find in, their food is excellent and tasty. In my opinion best in town. The portions are generous and I find the prices reasonable. Quality is great. Highly recommend and judging by the traffic New Years Eve I am not the only one who shares that view.
Great food at a reasonable price one of the best Chinese spots in Kingston if you are new to the area I recommend that you try what food they have to offer you wont be disappointed
Best American-Chinese in Kingston! My favourite dishes are the general tao and the s&s pork! Get the family meals for excellent value!
Great food. Best beef and broccoli in town, the hunan dumplings are amazing. When will the open again??
BEST beef and broccoli. Please open again soon!!!
We came here quite awhile ago before Covid. The food was mediocre. Staff were nice though. The food was bland, and some of it was under cooked. The fried rice was ok though. Will be giving them another try soon hopefully.
Placed an order online at 3:30 in the afternoon for 5:00 PM. The resturaunt calls me at 5:00 PM to tell me my order will take much longer and had no estimate of time. That is unacceptable to me. Figure out your staffing or delivery issues beforehand. Dont call your customer when their order is suppose to arrive and tell them it will be later and you dont know how much later.
Food is fresh and tasty. As a previous review said, bit on the salty side but that s common for Canadian Chinese fare. Price is a little high (but justified given restaurant margins these days. Add a bit more variety to the menu, some vegetarian/baked options and it s 5 stars for sure.
Lost a couple stars today. The Shanghai noodles with pork and shrimp is one of my favorite dishes. Today it contained two little strips of pork and three shrimp. The sauce was all wrong as well, didnt taste anything like previous times Ive ordered it. The Hunan Dumplings were spicy to the point of being dangerous to ingest. Seriously, did you taste your own sauce? If so, can you feel your face yet? The food wasnt inedible, (well the dumplings might have been for most people. I can take some kick, but you really over did it). Ive just come to expect so much more from your restaurant. I respect that Covid is killing business and I sympathize, but dropping your standards in the kitchen wont help you.
Ordered food several hours in advance for NYE, they cancelled 30 minutes prior to delivery. Leaving us with no options for New Years during a fking pandemic..
Wouldnt know how it is. I bought my food and delivery never came! Wont answer the phone either to get my money back! Will NEVER buy again!
Not the best experience. Food was ok.
Just don t go here...small portions, they look like microwaveable dinners, taste is off.
Amazing Chinese food. I ve tried many places across Kingston and this place never fails to impress. Their wonton soup is the best I ve had in years and is a must order. Only drawback is their hours vary and it s a bit pricey but you definitely get what you pay for.
Big Gen Tao!
Way back when this place was great for Chinese I have ate there in a while especially due to covid. You can t really enjoy anything.
Great egg rolls, quite bad bad general tao chicken
The food was fine, have ordered takeout there during lockdown. A reasonable place to visit.
Phenomenal restaurant - been a regular for 15 years. The pad Thai is the best I ve ever had but the general Tao chicken, beef and broccoli, and wonton soup are also incredible. The customer service is excellent and every time I visit the employees are kind, quick, and welcoming. Don t understand the negative reviews because it s truly my favourite in the city.
Good food, expensive tho.
Ordered from DoorDash. Food came quick and was hot. General Tao chicken was good with a nice spice. Kitchen and staff went above and beyond to fix an order I scored up. Would recommend.
The best restaurant in Kingston!
this place should get less than 1 star. Dec w5 2019 I pre ordered food at 1pm using skip the dishes as I figured they would be busy the delivery was suppose to be between 5:15 pm to 5:45 pm.The app said the food would be late so I called VIP and was told the food was gonna be 10 minutes longer, by 6:36pm the food still wasnt here so I called again to be told they needed 10 minutes more and when I explained how I ordered and what I was told when I called the first time the response was well were busy and you can cancel. I asked for a manager to be told one wasnt available because they were to busy by 7:30pm still no food and the driver for skip the dishes was told food wasnt ready so I cancelled the order as now the restaurant wasnt even answering the phone. How is this place still in business
Very dirty store and food was not that good
Loved it, best Ive had in Kingston. Ordered through skip the dishes, everything was was packaged, amount was as expected, and excellent taste. Will definitely order again!
VIP is great! Its an old Kingston staple that never seems to disappoint. The staff is always really nice and the owner is funny and great to chat with. Its almost always open, even during quarantine, for delivery and late night eats. 10/10 would recommend to a friend!
Great food, especially the spring rolls and egg rolls.
Spent 45 mins getting an order settled for call in and they dont update the business so I have no way to know they are closed and sure as the day is long I go to call it in and they decided to close for no reason early
Alright
Its Schezwan chicken fried rice
I gotta say, that was pretty bad. We ordered the Pad Thai and an egg roll each. So, the egg rolls, they were great. Nice and plump. Delicious. But the star of the meal, the Pad Thai. It was pure noodles with a sauce that tastes like vinegar. There was about a half teaspoon of crushed peanuts, and a ton of noodles. No veg, no crunch, I think there were a few strips of meat on occasion. I wouldnt be that fussed if it was cheap, but for two Pad Thais and two egg rolls, we paid $45.00 for two big ol plates of nothin but noodles. Delivery was quick.
Price is too high
Went to have dinner here because Wongs restaurant is temporarily closed and everybody I know who has ate here said the food is really good. I would have to disagree. Myself and my friend did not find the food good here and we will not be back.
Always enjoy my food. Normally order take out, they always have my food ready on time.
Food is tarrible got Wong tong soup chicken balls noodles and chicken fried rice the meat was the dumpling whatever was not pork-_- couldnt even eat it i had to spit it out rice was greesy and sticky.. Chicken balls tasted like fish.. And nobodies were just tarrible... I give this a 0
Very good
Went in with my daughter and the hot sauce on the table had mold in it. The soya sauce had food n crusty on it. Served water in dirty glasses. Showed server and she said sorry and grabbed from another table and still mold in the sauce. PLEASE DO NOT EAT HERE. Very unsanitary.
Chicken balls
Well enough
Kingston has read books in the past 14 years. I lived in a foreigner s home and went to a VIP for the first time to eat. I almost cried because of the smell of home. After studying for two years, VIP stayed with me for two years. My lovely boss lady, I miss you very much. I will definitely eat it whenever I go to Kingston!
Tasty food, they can be found in the skip the dishes app so you can ask for a delivery.
If you know how to read/speak Chinese youre gonna have a good time. I dont know how to read/speak Chinese... Its not great either but if youre really desperate I suppose. There is no quality Chinese food in Kingston IMO. Get the simple stuff like chicken balls and you wont be that disappointed.
Food is ok. Place is rather dirty. Bathroom is disgusting
Good food, good portions, not too expensive and friendly staff
I used to order spring rolls from the VIP Restaurant a lot but the last time I ordered take out, the spring rolls were so incredibly salty (like someone had spilled salt in them) so that they were inedible. I complained but all they would do was to offer me 10 percent off my next order while our expensive dinner was garbage! I will never go here again! Terrible customer service!
Cleanliness is not a top level concern. The waitress was courteous and fast.. the food was hot but not very flavorful.. broccoli and beef was mostly bean sprouts.. not a good value at all. Will not return.
Im very happy the phone issues seemed to be resolved and they are answering again. Great food for the price. My favourite place for general tao chicken. The website still needs to be a lot more user friendly.
Very Nice People Great service and Tasty Food and the Prices are Affordable
Great food. Always friendly service. Best egg rolls in town!
Awesome food good pricing
If you are looking for quite dinner this is not the place. It was ok for a last minute decision for dining out, but I wont return
Wow best eating experience Ive ever had in Kingston!!
This place gives you good portions and the flavours are all there. Very worth the money
Had take out and the rice portion was half the size of any other restaurant. It was cold and flovourless. The General Tao chicken was way too spicy and small portion. The only thing I enjoyed was the egg roll. Must be different owners because it never use to be that bad. Wont go there again.
food is great
This is the best in Kingston
Very impressed with their knowledge and service. I am vegan with allergies so I had several questions and the gentleman that answered the phone was very well spoken and answered all of my questions fully and even offered to make the vegetable fried rice without egg for me which I greatly appreciated! The food arrived in about 20 minutes piping hot and everything was cooked perfectly. Portions are great (this is coming from a vegan with an inner fat kid). I will most definitely order from them again, food was good, and service was AMAZING!
This place has excellent food at good prices. Very fresh ingredients. Good service. If you ask for exactly what you want you will be very happy with your meal. They do family style but also combination plates. Good place for a group or family meal.
We had a lovely romantic evening, very good restaurant 100%
Food ok but place needs a major cleanup. Service was spotty, no wine despite it being on menu, small beer selection.
Ive been going there for over 10 years. The best Chinese food in Kingston.
Love the food!
First time ordering from there. Not very impressed, order came incomplete waited over an hour for the rest of the order. Food was good just not for the wait.
Very friendly, especially Johnson, could talk to him all night. Very friendly and polite for a teenager.
Nothing too exciting here however their general Tao chicken and spicy beef are very good dishes.
The best restaurant I have ever eaten at while traveling in Kingston The best thing is boiled fish
Friendly attitude and good taste
Food is good, service is nice, having my best time when I was at Kingston.
Meals and services are average, and the dining environment is a little lacking.
I have never eaten in such a terrible Chinese restaurant in my life. The taste of the food is not even authentic, let alone normal. Don t be fooled. Foreigners may not be able to eat it, but Chinese people may be able to spit it out after taking a few more bites.
My go-to place for Chinese food nowadays. Their sweet and sour soup is excellent and we always get multiple portions of it. Everything else is pretty decent.
Loved it ... reminded me of the food I ate while I was in china
bad choice
So fresh and delicious
The northern food tastes very good, the proprietress is very kind, even if she is a vegetarian, she will cook delicious meals according to our requirements. 5 star review.
The best Chinese food in Kingston. Over all very friendly environment
An average authentic chinnese food compared to toronto/montreal restaurants. But it is the best there is. Well I went there a bit late so it was their closing time already. The lady at the front was in a hurry and I made a quick choice of buying chicken fried rice, then later I found out what I should have ordered is Yang Chow Fried Rice. After first bite, I was surprised. It was really good and well prepared. Overall I am satisfied with this place.
I Love this place..... Where else in Kingston can you build your own family meal.... There general Tso is fantastic I have been to other restaurants were it tasted like the chicken was thrown in bbq sauce and was disappointed. Always good/curiosity and reasonably priced.
Metal pieces were in the rice! 1.5 hour delivery. Awful...
This is the best place in Kingston for REAL Chinese food. Not too sure about the Canadianized dishes like chicken balls because I havent had them. I do love their meaty egg rolls. Our favorite dishes are the brisket hot plates, mongolian beef, and triple crown. Had their General Tso a couple of times, and that was crispy and good as well. We always dine in, and the service is wonderful.
I agree, a very enjoyable experience.
I ordered take-out from this place and was absolutely appalled at how terrible the service was. After I got the order, which was wrong, I called and told them the mistake they had made. As a vegetarian, I could not eat some of the food they had sent. They refused to replace the food and went so far as to tell me that what they had sent me was what I ordered! I would never order from here again.
I love this place. First time I stumbled across with friends and the general tso chicken was made fresh because it still had a crispness which I have never had in that dish. Friendly lady will definitely be a repeat customer dont listen to the picky Petes out there!!
My girlfriend and I made one of the worst dining choices of our lives by choosing to eat food from VIP. Although you can hardly call this food because i wouldnt feed it to a worm. The chicken balls we had were far to moist and the rice was incredibly dry. This is hard to believe because they both came in the same packaging. Not to mention it took so long to be delivered Im pretty sure the leaves changed color on the trees outside my house. Talk about the egg rolls... what egg rolls? these things were hard as rocks! David wouldnt have needed a slingshot to bring down goliath a gentle toss would have done the trick. We ordered ginger beef. I dont think we got ginger beef but it was clearly something they picked out of another restaurants garbage. Finally the bag it came in was ripped and soy sauce had burst open everywhere. This food is abismal and for those out there feeling hungry after spending a good 35$ on it we were still hungry, Why? because it ended up in the toilet. Disgusting!
Real Chinese food. Finally a great place. Not fancy. Just real.
