Black Dog Tavern in Kingston

Beautifully decorated, terrific staff and delicious food. My husband and I come here every Christmas as a gift to ourselves and it never disappoints.

In town for the night and went to the Black Dog for a nice dinner with my wife. Had a fabulous meal. Enjoyed everything. I had the burger which was outstanding and my wife loved the scallops and burratta Great service at the bar and fantastic drinks.

Absolutely brilliant pub. Food was stellar - best fish and chips I ve had outside of Tynemouth Point. Service was warm and welcoming. The drinks selection was grand. The music selection and ambience fed into a brilliant atmosphere.

Ellie and the crew were wonderful. It was quite the good surprise for such a great vibe and dining masquerading as a Tavern. So good were here two days in a row. Dietary restrictions: Dairy and gluten-free friendly

Lovely food and really kind staff. We went on Saturday evening for a small meal and loved it so much we returned for soup on Sunday. Dont let the word tavern in the name fool you. This is elevated dining with beautiful food. Thank you so much <3

Went to share a drink or two with some friends before a movie on Wednesday, the waiter was really cool! made us feel super comfortable, and even had on a studio ghibli movie when we came in!

Sat at the bar - kale Caesar was great! Had the duck confit and it was fantastic. Great atmosphere, chatted with bartender Taylor who was great! Highly recommend will go again when I m in town

The staff at this establishment are the friendliest group. We fell so comfortable as soon as we got there. Great conversations with them and great drinks.

EDIT: Hi Kingston visitors, just a quick heads up that Black Dog is refusing to honour the Kingston Dollars voucher program thats run by the Downtown Kingston merchants association and that lists them as a participating restaurant. Not sure whos pulling the bait-and-switch, but I do know that a well-run restaurant would not leave a pensioner holding the bag on presentation of the bill. That kind of behaviour is simply shameful.

Good morning and what an Amazing experience we had last night for our great dinner. Our reservation was for 5 PM for 3 people (my wife and daughter and I). We had a very nice server and she did amazing (great recomendation on the wine list and told us the specials of the day) which my wife and I shared. Our daughters dish (seafood bourginion) it was spectacular. We shared 3 apps (tomatoe soup of the day, shrimp beignet and duck poutine) oh ley all were delicious. We all have to commend all the staff and I asked permission if I could speak the head Chef to say to him it was spectacular and to say thanks to his kitchen staff how great the food was. Overall great experience for sure. Thank you very very much. Frank & Sandi & Brittany.

We were there for the second time now and everything was perfect again. The food was very tasty and the service was attentive. The large selection of beers is also highly recommended.

Scallop appetizer was very delicious and the Muscovy Duck main course was fantastic. Service was great and the outside back patio was cool because of the recent rain but real nice to be there - the background music was nice and low, permitting us to be able to talk together with a normal voice - it was much appreciated.

We had Lunch. Ali took amazing care of us and the Cocktails were in a word EPIC.

Food was okay. BUT. We had a platter of cheese with some cold meats. And some wild mushroom bread with a 16oz steaks. The food was quite good. See their problem is that we had quite a big appetizer to share and the main dish I arrived when we were not finished so we had not a lot of place on the table

We dined at Black Dog Tavern Sat July 27th night- and were pleased with the overall experience. In particular, we were wowed by the service of Harper and the young host at the door (we learned later he was only 15 years old!) Meal was decent value for money, and great presentation. The calamari and burrata are both good excellent.

Oh, it was OK but not at all special. The menu wasnt extensive and really it was a bit expensive for what one received. The charcuterie board was quite good - $37, enough for each of us (four) but no more. We (four) had a range of dishes (Seafood Bouillon, Burger, Muscovy Duck Confit, BC Steelhead Tout) and it was the same with all. Mid-$30 for all but the burger. A bottle of rose at $60+ was outlandish ( the more affordable house rose was being phased out). The only redeeming feature was the pleasant terrace in back, and they had espresso.

SO happy we went to Jazz brunch at the Black Dog Tavern during our stay in Kingston! Our server, Harper, was attentive and on her A-game; she even offered to take a group photo of a nearby table and made sure to get a great shot of their group, which I think exemplified how caring she is! The food was delicious - that French toast is no joke! Our favourite patio by far, we will 100% be back if we visit Kingston again!

Had lunch here on June 12/24 with a friend who recommended it. The service was impeccable and the food was excellent. We all savored our different meals and as a celiac, I was especially pleased with my gluten free fish & chips. The batter was crispy and the fish tasty. Cocktails & Mocktail with our lunch were amazing. Will definitely go back here on our next visit to Kingston. Sydney was on top of her server game! Dietary restrictions: The restaurant was aware of my gluten free allergy when my friend made the lunch reservation & the server made sure to go through my options.

The food quality was plain. Easy dish to whip up with some leftovers. It was expensive. My wife had the same dish, hers had hardly any sauce on it. I went with friends 3 months ago and its the same feeling, I can make it better and not overcook everything.

Great restaurant! One of my all time favourites. I often go for the duck confit and it never ceases to be delicious. Their Creme brule is my favourite in town! The restaurant is pricier than others but for once in a while dine out, its worth it. The only other comment I have is that it can feel a little cramped in restaurant but other than that its great.

We took our black dog to the Black Dog Tavern. Sat on the back patio, hot day, lots of shade. Great food, great service. The side Kale Caesar was enough for the two of us. Water dish provided for our little Winnie.

We went with another couple. I was very pleased with my meal: scallops to start were delicious, and the fish was fresh and hot, and the batter crispy. Our friend sent his steak back as it was overcooked, but unfortunately, the second one was no better. At $ 60.00 for a steak, one would expect it to be cooked as requested. However, the waitress was delightful, and an adjustment was made to the bill. We had a wonderful evening, with mixed feelings about the dinner itself. Vegetarian options: I noticed that vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options were available, although none apply to me.

4 of us ate. We all felt the food was really salty, 2 of us had The burger. It was very good. Fries were very good, except for the excessive salt. 2 others had fish special. They said it was just ok. Server was excellent. Overall enjoyed our experience but probably wouldnt return.

Scallops were outstanding, well worth it. Beef tartare was fantastic, had a nice kick to it. The summer special was a salmon, and it was fabulous. Duck/brie poutine was good, but everything else was so good that it didnt compare.

good atmosphere for a drink date but food took and hour and 15 minutes for 2 breakfasts, the food came out cold and tables around us were seated, served and left before we saw any food. fried chicken benedict was a barely breaded piece of chicken that was like a soggy chicken tender that had been sliced in 2 to make it go farther. server was very good about not charging us for the cold disappointing food and was the only saving grace. cant say the first impression of this place was any good though.

Should and could have been much better. We arrived at 4 pm and it was empty but for the front window and a group at the back. A group of staff at the bar chatting. No one greeted us so after a few moments we headed toward a booth for two. A young woman then rushed over and asked if we had a reservation. We didnt but it was Four. She then says she can seat us at the middle table not a booth. Ok thats fine. She puts us *right next* to the group so we got a free lesson about local beer from their tour guide who was loud. Our waitress was very friendly, no problem there. We ordered drinks and entrees ... everything was good but not out of this world. The group left and we were alone at our table by the kitchen. In the empty restaurant. The waitress checked on our first few bites when we were nearly done. We finished our meals.The four wait staff chatted at the bar the whole time. We decided we were not having more drinks or dessert. I had to get up and put my coat on to get the bill. All the booths were still empty when we left. There were six adults and one child left when we left. All in all, would not recommend.

We came for a family Easter dinner. There were new drinks and dishes on the menu that we were keen to try. We were NOT disappointed. I had the Walleye. The fish was fresh and delicious and the vegetables were roasted to perfection. The Our Cosmo was delicious, smooth and refreshing. Service was amazing. The whole staff was friendly and thoroughly competent. We will return!!

Highlights Shared salad which we identified did not bring bowls. Shared main dish. Advertised for 2. Only brought one plate. Identified we had to be at theatre for 7. Ordered dessert approximately 630at 645 we had to leave. At 630 when we ordered coffee and dessert we also ordered a glass of wine (which would not have been ordered if dessert could not be delivered in a timely fashion,) asked for the bill. We paid. As we left without the dessert server was quite annoyed as he said the kitchen was busy. He was making drinks. Gave me $15.00 cash from the till for dessert he said the cook was making but he was busy. He should have told us it would be longer than the time we identified we had. Server doing both the bar and tables, too rushed to give good service. Steak and lobster, 3 small chips, lobster not adequate for 2 people as advertised.

Rustic charming restaurant in the heart of the city. Lovely cocktails and good food!

Realistically a bit pricey, but they try and make it seem worth it with a well dressed plate. Server was lovely, and the lay out is good for conversation if it isnt packed. Need to offer oysters in smaller quantities- I would have loved to have a couple (4 max), but for one person at lunch 6 is too many, especially if youre having other things.

I had fresh Nova Scotia, oysters and oysters from PEI, as well as mac & cheese, and a funky salad and some grilled bread with Mackinnon brothers brewing beer on the menu. The place is awesome very busy fast service.

Friday night - date night...not our usual great Black Dog experience. We were seated at a table that was nestled in tightly between two other tables with barely enough room to get in or out without bumping into people seated at the other tables. We get it, though...it was busy. We ordered the Arancini appetizer, which sadly arrived cold (ish). It was very tasty, even though it wasnt hot. My husband ordered the Burger with Fries and said it was great! Unfortunately, the second beer he ordered mid-meal, didnt get delivered until he was already finished his dinner. I ordered the Steak Frites, which sadly, was not great this time. I immediately noticed that my fries were not hot, which was fine...but my steak was way over-salted. Not sure what happened there? We ate our meals and didnt complain or send anything back (I just really hate doing that) Black Dog is still one our favorite downtown spots - will we go back? You betchya!

Loved the Caesar salad, cod dish, and arancini balls. Atmosphere is hip and buzzing. One dish came out cold but the staff re-made it quickly. My espresso martini was so yummy (one of the best)! I ll be back.

We got seated at tables across from the kitchen and thoroughly enjoyed it. Quieter, more private and you get to see all the dishes before ordering! Our server was delightful and very attentive. Everyone loved their chosen starters and entrees!

Very friendly server. We were there so Sunday brunch. Our server managed to get something for husband that was on the regular lunch menu. We were 4 pals getting together for the 1st time, in a long while, and she was very understanding that we were busier gabbing than looking at menus and then eating. Nice place.

My husband and I wanted to eat out on Saturday night, but when I went to make a reservation we either had to book 4:30 or 8:15 as everything in between was already taken. We decided to eat early, and I am actually really glad we did as the place was charming, the server had the time to chat with us (she was lovely and really funny), and it was quiet because it was still so empty. By the time we had finished our meal the place was getting quite crowded, and it was difficult to converse because of the joyous din of all the other patrons. My meal (herbed chicken, soup of the day (cauliflower, potato, cheddar), and bread pudding dessert) were all delicious. Parking: Parking downtown can be tricky but there are several outdoor paid lots, and indoor lot, and street parking all within 2 blocks of the restaurant.

Grab dinner before a show at Slush Puppy place, fantastic steak and frit and the leek and ale mac and cheese was very good. Reservations were recommended but they squeezed us in last minute, the service is very friendly and informative of the Kingston area. Highly recommend visiting.

The black dog tavern is the best place in Kingston for gluten free food. The food is all amazing and almost everything is gluten free so you don t have to worry about cross contamination. You can order and eat like you would if you weren t gluten intolerant or allergic. They make amazing fish and chips. The steak is always perfect and the wait staff make sure your experience is top notch. I try and take my lovely lady here anytime we are in the city. I would book a table when possible as a place this good is often very busy. Dietary restrictions: Celiac s delight. This place makes you feel like you are well thought of and the menu is deep with options

Both the service and the food were excellent.

This has been a usual haunt for my family, and our out of town guests and we have been about 10-15 times in the last year and plan to continue dining there every few weeks. They are the most consistent in town for decent food and relaxed atmosphere. Their duck and chicken dishes are incredible along with a fun and creative cocktail list. To note: On the weekends the place can get quite busy and loud and a reservation is definitely advised. My only critique is that the service is slow and is lacking for the price of a plate (30-50$ per entre per person)

The half sandwich and soup was great, along with the house salad. Definitely fills you up. The Tomato cream soup was so good. We talked about on the way home. Jodie our waitress was very sweet too, very polite.

Perfect little spot for drinks and bites, or a full meal. The cocktail menu -- including mocktails -- has some really tasty house creations. The menu checks all the right boxes for simple-yet-creative takes on bistro dining. We ate small plates style, from the starters, for a kight dinner -- oysters, beef tartare, white bean dip, seared scallops. Everything was top-notch, and we were plwased that BDT can do a dairy substitution for the scallops. Vegetarian options: Had the white bean dip, which was excellent. Dietary restrictions: BDT can sub out the dairy for plant based dairy on a couple of menu items, including the scallops.

This was our first time here out for a date night and it was great. Service was swift, and our server was knowledgeable, food and drinks came quickly as well. We started with the steak tartare and it was excellent! We had the duck and pan roasted tenderloin for our mains. Both were delicious- the duck fat could be rendered a bit more, and the tenderloin was on the crust of being too cooked (almost burnt- I suspect the pan was too hot when they put it in at first) but they nailed the internal cooking. Both dishes had great flavour despite these minor things. Biggest complaint, my water glass had a chip out of it that my lip got caught on (no damage done) and the bathrooms could use a bit of a more throughout clean (some spider webs at the top of the stalls). We will be back for another meal!

The Black Dog Tavern is a great quiet and cozy restaurant in downtown Kingston. For dinner, we ordered the steak frites 8oz and the fish n chips. Both were delicious and great portion sizes. The creme brule was a light dessert to end the meal. I would recommend this restaurant for a great night out!

Our favourite place to eat when dropping/picking up our Kingston student, the duck comfit fries are delectable, the service is great and always an excellent atmosphere.

Ive been to Black Dog before and enjoyed it very much. I like the atmosphere, and the food is always good. But we went tonight for the first time in a while and theres a newish menu. Its early in 2024 but this meal will be the one all my others will have to live up to this year! We enjoyed the Vegetable Frites--nicely, lightly breaded, in a yummy salsa--but the highlight for me was the Grilled Walleye, which I dont remember being on the menu before. (Its not listed below). A sizeable walleye fillet, it was grilled to perfection with some kind of rub on it that only highlighted rather than overpowering the flavour of the fish. This sat on a bed of smashed fingerling potatoes that were crispy and nicely salted and heritage carrots that had a good crunch to them--not overcooked and mushy which is so often the case with restaurant carrots. It was precisely the meal Id hoped for when I ordered it, but better!

Scallops were chewy expected melty :) Not a fan of shoestring fries. Waitress not as attentive as could have been. Finished meal but sat with plates on table for quite some time. Flagged her down when she was walking past for take home container. She was very pleasant and quick though.

Service was poor. We were seated at a table in the back room near the door to the patio. Servers were constantly going through the door which let in the cold air. We weren t even asked about drinks for about 20 minutes after being seated and then the server brought red wine instead of the white which had been ordered. That caused another 10 minute wait. She took the order for half the meal and then disappeared. We finally got the salad we d wanted to share but nothing to serve it with given it was in one giant bowl. Another server finally got us some spoons. We were beside the order station, across from meal pickup and as previously mentioned, by the back door. People were going in and out, picking up meals, putting in orders and generally doing all the business of the restaurant right behind us. I d made the reservation almost two weeks in advance so we hadn t walked in off the street. I thought we d be in the front room at any rate, I was not well when I got home whether that was due to the food, the noise or whatever. Not an enjoyable experience.

Black Dog Tavern has become our go to place for entertaining out of town guests. Good food, great drinks and the perfect martini.

Normally we enjoy our dinner experience at Black Dog. Service this time was quite disappointing. It took an hour to get our drink order and for the server to come back to get our food order. Our food arrived late and was warmish, the french onion soup did not have any cheese and one of our food order was missed entirely. We felt was a bit restrictive-not enough meat option for the carnivores. That said there were some positives: my Martini was outstanding and the front of house staff did wonders accommodating us when we changed our reservation from 4 to 6 people last minute, And as always the atmosphere is pretty good.

Our waitress (maddy) was lovely! Her service was prompt and bubbly! Over all and extremely pleasant visit! Kid-friendliness: Children s food came early and was wonderful! Could have used children s glasses.

Hands down the best cocktail list around. The sangria was so flavourful and delicious

Loved the Scallops appetizer and Tavern Burger, but wasnt crazy about the salad that came with it. We went during the early-bird time , so we received a bit of a discount as well.

Absolutely loved it! Our visitors from out-of-town were very impressed, the food was beyond delicious and our server went out of her way to ensure we had a great experience. Cant wait to go back! p.s. The mushroom toast might be the best choice you ever make!

Great atmosphere with good food

It was busy so I m glad we made a reservation. The atmosphere was lively but not so loud you couldn t talk. The cocktails were yummy as was the charcuterie was shared.

Everything was great. Very good service (sorry I don t remember my servers name). Beef tartar was very good. Also good wine list. I had a BC Syrah that was excellent.

We found our server to be somewhat distracted. She was unfamiliar with the menu, and at the end of our dinner, she cleared the dishes & brought the bill. When i asked for the dessert menu, she brought one over, changed the bill & we had almost forgotten about the dessert by the time it had gotten there. Most of us were up getting coats on. I felt rushed & crene brule is not something you can take to-go . She was a lovely girl, just seemed distracted. The table next to us was served their meal by someone else & the girl came by & was shocked that they had already received their meal.

We had a large staff brunch for Christmas party. Our server was a rock star. She got everything bang on and the food was over the top. Thanks guys!!

We got a table on the patio. At first we were skeptical since it was quite cold out but to our surprise they had a whole set up with a bubble covering us and our table along with heated lamps inside. It was a completely different atmosphere from inside the restaurant we were the only table outside and it was really nice to be able to have a conversation without having to raise our voices to hear each other. Our server was amazing and took care of us very well and the food was very good especially the mac and cheese and the duck poutine, I will definitely come back next winter for the ambiance, food and of course the bubble. I would highly recommend this spot if you like a quiet night to yourselves with good food and great privacy.

Excellent! We found them prior to driving to Kingston on a gluten-free selection app, since we have a celiac issue. Their promise of a real awareness of gluten issues was bang on, and the fish and chips may have been the best we have had regardless of the gluten. The service was friendly, and the bartender kept us well entertained. We will be going back for sure!
