Nice quaint little deli with very good sandwich’s. We enjoyed the old school feel but the pricing was a bit high, which I don’t mind because the quality of the food was great.
Great schnitzel on my plate in no time!!! Tasty , crunchy!!! White and red sourcraut added amazing taste and tones of great bacterias to my biodome. My Gf had a fish and chips with 5 stars rating!! Highly recommended
Service is good. Food is great. Breakfast or sandwiches. Don't know who the new guy is but he got me what I needed very quick.
I really enjoyed this place. It’s an ideal study spot, they have a really nice cafe hub in the back and I am suprised it’s not as busy as crave or coffee and company. It has great light lunch meals, and even better service than most of the cafes downtown. I would recommend, especially if you are an anti-social student wanting another study spot.
I have been coming here my whole entire life and while there have been some changes over the years the only thing that matters to me hasn’t: the Ceasar salad is my forever favourite.
European vibe delicatessen where we had such items as open faced smoked salmon sandwiches with capers and pork schnitzel sandwiches in cute Downtown Kingston, ON! Original owner was Danish. Restaurant just celebrated its 40th anniversary at its Downtown Kingston location. Service was excellent and prices moderate. Also had a chat with the xurrrnt engaged owner.
Good for a quick deli eat. Great friendly staff. I had the Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich with Hot Mustard on Rye. It was good, but the Rye bread was alittle to thin and meat was good not great. If you're looking for a quick bite with good meat than this is the place!
Great place for nutritious food for eat in or take out. I was told by the staff that this business has been going for 50 plus years...and I believe, 37 years, at this particular location. I think this family businesses' reputation for quality, and for popularity, speaks for itself!
Has an older feel to it, but offers up some old fashioned breakfast fare and has an interesting deli. Nice and affordable as well.
Great little diner, fresh home cooked food and pleasant staff.
One of my favourite downtown spots to grab a quick lunch! Always greeted with familiar and friendly faces :)
Charming, European style deli with breakfast and lunch fare. Good place to study as there are laptop chargers between each table.
This place is absolutely YUM! They never fail to serve a fresh delicious meal in a timely manner. Always smiling even with people lined up out the door! One of my favorite little spots in Kingston!
Found this place after many visits Kingston Homemade plates and friendly service. Food
Service was okay. Food was incredibly disappointing. Sandwiches were inedible, meat was tasteless, bland, and there was barely anything in the sandwich. Paid $60 for two bites before throwing it out. Wouldnt recommend.
Nice place. People are great. Food is pretty good just a little on the expensive side for what you get. Definitely worth a visit.
Awful experience! I received my order, and the bread was as hard as a rock I couldnt even eat it. I paid $40 for a BLT and fries for delivery. When I complained about the stale bread, they blamed it on the delivery. Apparently, a sandwich cant survive a 15-minute car ride without turning into stone. Couldnt even break it with my hands. The customer service on the phone was unhelpful. This is my first and last time ordering from here utterly unprofessional and gross. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND ORDERING HERE EVER. -RESPONSE TO THE OWNER: The issue wasnt the driver; it was the fact that the food wasnt fresh and your response was disappointing. Claiming that 15 minutes in a warm car turns bread into stone is absurd. Consider removing items from your delivery menu if they cant handle transportation. A refund would have been appropriate, but instead, you took advantage of the situation and ripped me off. Additionally, the fries were the frozen Costco brand and tasted like mush, and the coleslaw hardly had dressing. It also looked like you just took some scraps from the bottom of an old salad bag and threw it in the most miniature cup available.
Price is a little high in comparison to food offered, was tasty though
Its not advertised much, but this place has amazing German cuisine and deli products! I was surprised to find my peanut flips by Lorenz here. The schnitzel and croquettes are great. They make their own Kaisers and Berliners. Top notch stuff! I actually wanted to eat at Amadeus Cafe, but they have weird hours and were closed lunchtime on a Wednesday, so I am glad I stumbled upon this place
Fabulous food and service
$62 lunch for two chicken clubs and two mac and cheese pasta s, sandwiches were dry and pasta total mush. This place used to be really good.
Golden Rooster Catering is very popular with our families in our Reception and Celebration of Life Centre. The team at Golden Rooster are professional and reliable. The bread is homemade, as well as the rum balls, a special treat for many Kingstonians.
Used to love this place. The service and quality has really gone down the tubes. Ordered 2 hot roast beef specials. Hot roast beef is typically open faced with gravy on top. What we received were two cold, very thick cut, incredibly tough roast beef sandwiches. I told the waitress it wasnt good and asked if I could have something else instead. She asked the manager, who by the way didnt bother to come to the table, but the answer was no. They would only remake me the same sandwich I had ordered. Why would I want the same thing that I am not happy with? Not impressed, especially since going out to eat is a luxury these days. I wont be back. Complete waste of 35 dollars. Shame its deteriorated that much in the last few years.
I ve heard good things about the Golden Rooster, but I have to say that I m very disappointed in my first visit. The meat in the smoked meat sandwich was rubbery and very hard to chew. Almost like rubber. Did not finish my meal and will find someplace else to eat.
Amazing sandwhichs that are worth the price.
Its been so long since i was last in Kingston and wanted to enjoy Golden Roosters sandwich as its been a long time, but I never got to that point because the service was so terrible. I was second in line, with a number ticket but arriving customers kept being served before me, with no tickets and I have no idea why? I was patient but being ignored the third time is too much. I find the staff had no self-awareness of whos been waiting. Whats even the point of these tickets if they serve anybody who is within proximity? Pretty disappointed but I hope the next time I come back the service will be better and faster. Edit: The customers who cut me werent ordering bakery or coffee. They were ordering meals.
Very good food. People were great. My friend said coffee was stale, but near end of the day.
Wonderful little deli in the heart of downtown. Try the jam filled donuts!
The staff is lovely, but the food is super expensive, small and less than good.
They have nothing anymore! European food wise
This was somewhere that had been recommended to me for quite a while, but I managed to finally get a chance to come in for lunch a couple weeks ago. Ordered their Bratwurst with Scallop Potato and Sauerkraut lunch special, and overall I was satisfied with my choice. The potatoes were cooked nicely, fully cooked and easy to cut into, but not too soft so they didnt fall apart in the sauce. The sausage and sauerkraut complemented each other perfectly, and the generous scoop of sauerkraut added a nice flavor boost to the potatoes as well. Ill definitely be back to try more of the menu options in the future. Definitely recommend it here!
I cant say I am a regular, but I have stopped in for lunch every four to six weeks for the last five years. The staff are outstanding, very kind and helpful. The food is delicious and there is a good selection to choose from. My favourite is the in-house roasted beef sandwich, absolutely delicious. Plus, I really like that I can come for lunch and get something to take home and prepare for dinner.
The service was good but I was given cold toast with a tub of butter on it and the food was cold except for the eggs
This place is definitely the best recent discovery! Democratic, reasonable prices for high-quality food and products, very positive and hospitable staff. Clearly place is created and operated with love. Can t wait to visit summer patio
Wonderful prices, great food ,fun experience
Great bakery and cafe. Had breakfast here. The staff were really friendly.
Great customer service
Good coffee, nice cookies very friendly staff. Sitting outside on the patio is not just an option but a must - it s nice here
Nice clean cafeteria style restaurant - no vegan options - few vegetarian options but many good options for carnivores lol
Excellent open faced sandwiches
Great place to grab a takeaway lunch (terrific sandwiches & soups) or enjoy the small patio on Princess St, or a table inside. Good selection of cold cuts, cheeses, even sweets at the till incase you forgot dessert!
Although its not the hoppin spot it was several years ago the good was still great, seems like a less meat on the sandwiches , but the Cesar was still delicious!
Since that place changed Hand s not Good going to Close
Great selection and place for lunch. Sandwiches were loved by all.
Good food good service, nice staff.
Very nice place, excellent schnitzel and very good staff
Excellent homemade dishes, soups, sandwiches and more. Wide variety of choices and very good prices. Convenient to the downtown area.
The fish and chips and salami sandwich were some of the best i ve ever had.. very cool vibe they got going on here definitely will be back.
Good quality, decent portions and good pricing. This place is a cafeteria style and it s kind of confusing to a new customer. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Old school deli vibes.
Great lunch.
Excellent place for some tasty food! I recommend the bacon & onion poutine!! Wonderful staff and service!
Great food and fresh Deli, they always have a nice selection of breads, meats, cheese too but recent price hikes from every business has made it a pricey lunch
Very friendly and helpful ladies at the front. I was sitting at the back of the cafe. It was super quiet, you could hear everyone speaking kinda quiet.Would be nice to have some music. Besides that, everything is absolutely amazing. Thank you for everything!
Good food good service
Cute little deli + cafe/restaurant. Reminds me of the something youd see in Europe or NYC.
I cant not stop in here when Im in the Kingston area, their berliners are not to be missed!
Pretty amazing comfort food.
Best potato salad ever!!
Purchased a package of kaiser buns yesterday along with deli meat and 2 jelly donuts. Kaiser rolls were at least already 2 days old and dry. Quite disappointed.
Great food!
I love to stop in at the Golden Rooster for a Danish Meatball sandwich when in Kingston. I had mine on a bun with Dijon and mayo. My bf had his open faced with honey mustard. They top the open faced sandwich with red cabbage. We always get a side of saurkraut which is warm and has bacon in it. Make sure you get a pickle; they are crunchy and perfect with this sandwich. Since I am such a fan of the meatball I rarely get anything else but I have had the egg salad. It was good but not worth skipping the meatball. They have soup and sandwich specials. There is also packaged products to buy. Danish cookies, jarred kraut and jams. The shelves are a bit bare right now but I am sure they will restock soon with restrictions lifting. They also are a deli so you can buy meat, cheese and baked goods to take home. Worth the stop.
Good sandwitch -takeout
Solid authentic Danish cuisine. Tasty, fresh and traditional. My favourite will be the Open face Shrimp & Egg
tasty smoked salmon sandwich with so much meat. cheerful helpful service. if you eat in, they have local art for sale on the walls.
I have been to that place so many times since I moved to Kingston many years ago. Today was the first since the beginning of the pandemic. I ordered a sandwich (didnt look at the price because I bought sandwiches there before) and I paid 11 dollars (including taxes). I am not talking about a gourmet sandwich just a regular sandwich. I know that everything is expensive but it seems a bit too much for what I ordered. As there are other places where you can get sandwiches (as good and cheaper) - this is my last time there. Very sad.
Wonderful place for a real hand crafted deli sandwich with a pickle on the side. Homemade bread, delicious!
Amazing German donuts fresh deli experience.
Always quality choices and friendly service
Great food and service, but not as good as it used to be
Great place. Sandwiches, hot items and local favourites like their giant meatballs are served until 4:30pm. They have a deli and some prices are better than Walmart. Try the Reuben.
Gotta come on the weekend for the pork rinds! The goose liver pate is amazing and grab a few meatballs too. They also stock a limited selection of European goodies, stuff you dont think you need until you back a second time loading up!
Three best deli in town
This place is wonderful. Not pretentious, good wholesome food, incredible cheeses, friendly service, large eating area. Definitely a special place.
Great food!
Cute little deli with great sandwiches. Had the Reuben and it did not disappoint! They had a nice patio set up when we visited.
Good selection of deli meats and cheeses. Staff is super polite and attentive. Excited to go back to try their sandwiches!
Fantastic food. Fantastic staff. Great value.
Great soup
Great selection
It was tasty...enjoyed it. Fantastic service.
Should be Zero. Summarily ejected from the store after making an order for a smoked salmon sandwich. Please do not support this business - they seem to enjoy discrimination; and, especially against persons with disabilities.
Great traditional European style deli. Make sure you visit on a Thursday for the Mulligatawny Soup!
Im a local living downtown, so I know The Golden Rooster inside out. This deli , a downtown landmark, is always Five Stars. Always. It ranks up there with Pasta Genova, where I go for the aromas that bring me instantly back to Italy.
The $10.95 all day breakfast is always awesome. Hash browns are those crispy dollar type. Yummy in the tummy. Staff cheery and extremely helpful in getting orders together.
Great food and there supper fast
Very tasty, fresh, and well-prepared European classics at low prices. Friendly staff, spacious dining room, clean washrooms. Red cabbage and sauerkraut are standouts. Portions are very large. Berliner doughnuts and rum log and lemon cake are all excellent. There is limited free street parking in front and pay and display in back. You have to climb six stairs to enter from the back parking lot, but the double handrail is helpful if you have a mobility impairment. Washrooms are down a flight of stairs.
Mighty fine deli. Love it.
Warm and tasty on a frigid day.
Great open face shrimp sandwich.
My favourite place in Kingston
Always good food
Amazing
Everything for a good eatery
Great sandwiches and I love their breakfast. I eat here at least once a week. At lunch time the deli may seem really busy but just grab a number, the wait is never very long, plus it gives you time to pick what you want and even change your mind if need be.
Yummy
Ive always walked past this place and never got to try it til today. Yummy food & real friendly service! Enjoyed their house pate sandwich on housemade white bread although the Dijon mustard was overpowering. Its not a fancy place but if has a nice homey vibe
Atmosphere Nice quick service place Small but desert Yami with cream caremal and vanilla flavor likes it .
Fast , good food, friendly service
Amazing spot for a bite to eat. It has that home cooked feel and taste. Great prices too!
Always go there when cravung a rueben sandwich
Good food
Mmmmmmm
Top-notch deli
The Golden Rooster has that traditional deli feel, beginning with the glass store front and you pulling a numbered ticket at the entrance. You realize immediately that you arent prepared to be served because before you lays a glass display hosting dozens of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and breads to choose from. Behind you are shelves that rise to the ceiling with biscuits, bread, chocolates. Eventually you accept that youre in over your head and allow the sandwich maker to give you a suggestion and you run with it. Each sandwich is made with care and a smile, loaded onto a cafeteria tray if you so choose, and have a seat after paying. Flavours then assault your senses as you enjoy the type of sandwich your mom, aunt, or grandmother (IF you were lucky enough to have any of these in your life) used to make when you were a kid. Tl;dr great sandwich at a fair price! Complete with good service and a traditional deli atmosphere.
Delicious Montreal sandwiches are here. And there are also a lot of nice, neat, elderly people
Great food.
Old school deli.
Best place for deli meats.
My favourite place to go for lunch. I go all the time. Great deli - meats and cheeses, sandwiches, salads, and German grocery.
Swedish bistro serves authentic cuisine. The atmosphere is bistro meats diner with lots of space for sitting down for a meal.
Staff was very rude, food was mediocre at best
Had the goulash soup today! It was to die for. Amazing sandwiches too!
Best deli place ever! I have been to Europe multiple times and this is like stepping into a European deli- even the baked goods have an authentic feel to them. Would highly recommend using them for catering as well. Sometimes my team has lunch meetings and we always order from here and make sure to get a spinach salad to share!
So good I used to be able to go evry day for a berliner but now dont work in the area. I miss it lol. There lunches are great and their baked goods are amazing as above the berliners are my fav.
Amazingly yummy, fresh food! Friendly staff. Just remember to take a number and order at the counter as it is a delicatessen.
Excellent Kingston establishment. Great selection of European style cooking, sandwiches, soups. Other packaged and freshly baked items . Friendly service, cafeteria style ordering, ample seating. A Kingston tradition
Love the food and the service. I called in an order for a deli salad and it was there ready to get after I finished work.
Clean & bright. Good selection of meats & cheeses.
Yummy
Chicken schnitzel sandwich any time.
love to visit for lunch. closes before supper. Level entrance but bathroom is downstairs.
Soups and sandwiches are fantastic. Despite being busy pretty much every lunch, the staff manages a great turn-around. I have only every ordered take away.
excellent flaky pastry called Danish crinkle with almond custard
A local favourite that does a tremendous job having a large assortment of great fresh foods. If your in kingston and enjoy the old style diner you will not be dissapointed. Great service, friendly staff, good prices. And be sure to grab a Berliner before you walk out the door. That is if there is any left.
Great food. Fast and friendly service. They bring the food to your table.
After waiting for almost two months to taste the Danish portion of the menu, this place was a bitter disappointment. In particular we wanted liver pate and frikkadeller. Mom had the pate on an open-faced sandwich for I think 8 or 9 dollars. The pate was so wet you could barely get it on the fork and it had zero flavour. The open-faced sandwich consisted of what appeared to be one half of one piece of bread, all disguised by an inordinate pile of lettuce. The best part of that was the cucumber salad (just like mom makes) on top and the two 1/8th slices of tomato. After discovering there was no hot meal containing frikkadeller (you had to buy them singly for $4.25 each) I decided to go with tuna on rye. There was too much mayo, causing the tuna to cascade out of the sides of the bread. The bread was delicious and was the saving grace. I think the cost for that was also around 8 dollars. Those two lunches, with four macaroons and two bottles of juice cost over $27.00. The younger staff must be new for the summer and while pleasant had no energy and spoke too fast. We had come with a wallet full of cash and a cooler looking the empty the deli of pate, pickled fish and anything else Danish that tickled our fancy. We came away with a box of cookies (for old times sake it reminded us of our time back home) and a loaf of bread. We drove from Ottawa and sadly it was not worth the time or gas.
Fantastic
Simple, good food, and fast service.
Always delicious. Super worth the wait, as they are BUSY during lunch.
Great fresh sandwiches decent prices
awesome traditional german deli
Love love love. Why have I never been here in the 41 years Ive been alive. The food is amazing!!! The atmosphere is great. The deli selection is kick ass!
Exceptional deli.
Delicious food, however, the prices for meat and cheese seem to be pricey!
This place has some of the best chicken salad sandwiches ever. Its a great spot if you want to have a classic deli style sandwich
Extremely friendly staff, fantastic service, delicious food, cosy atmosphere
Best deli style restaurant in Kingston! Food is always delicious!
A gem tucked away on Princess St (lower) - EXCELLENT food and great service.
Great food, especially the baked goods! Get a fresh donut, you won t regret it!
Very good home made soup and great cold cut sandwich.
Great spot for a deli lunch
Great sandwiches. Reasonable prices. Sometimes a long line at lunch. But it moves quickly. Dont forget to take a number.
I can get Danish food here! nuff said! Love it!
Excellent full-service Deli with an abundance of meal items to eat on-site.
Have been coming here daily for the past week. Better than any deli in Kingston. Fresh soups, basic yet delicious sandwiches, fresh salads.
Awesome fresh food and friendly staff.
Service was great and the waitresses are a very polite
Really great food and not expensive at all!
Very often, very well attended but always worth the wait. Definitely one of the top tips for a cozy and inexpensive meal. Make sure to take a number at the entrance so that you can get there quickly and choose one of the delicious dishes. Also a shop for German products that you cant find anywhere else in the city!
Good european food
Love love the food here
Unfortunately since it got sold service has declined
Great service! Good food! Older crowd place but if you can not worry about your cool factor for 2 seconds youll enjoy a great meal!
Alway reliable and good quality food
Been here 3 times now and am still in love with all the options especially their cheese counter and as a lunch Cesar salad and a BLT are great here
They make awesome food here and their chicken pies are outstanding! All of their dishes are fantastic and reasonably priced. The staff is outstanding and very courteous :-).
Wow was surprised to see the spencer sandwich that used to be my favourite had stale toast and was cold. Home fries hard and just deep fried from raw. After years of eating here sad to say I wont be back. Then I was told it was sold. Sure could tell the difference. Shame.
Delicious!
Good food
Awesome deli. Fresh food. Friendly staff. Unbeatable prices
I love coming to Golden Rooster....I have been getting there chicken croquettes for over 15 years now....has a deli feel......love the staff......and a good old friend of mine Debbie who has passed away took me here the first-time to try the chicken croquettes and I cant get enough of them...great job!!
Good food made fresh
My favorite restaurant in Kingston !
Consistently good food
Comfortable cafeteria style dining. If you like various kinds of be European sausages, meats, and pate youll enjoy not breaking the bank here. Good smoked meat as well but I prefer the open faced Danish sandwich with pate.
Their Berliners pastry is amazing!
