First off, I rarely have an experience where I have to share this kind of rating. But as a sushi lover, and a devoted fan of Japanese cuisine I feel I owe it to the next customer who has to drop $80 for a lunch for two + a sm takeaway. I don’t share this rating on a light hearted note. I debated for some time, but I shared what I had hoped to be a special lunch out with my 84 yr old mom, and she didn’t say anything until dinner time. Then my husband gagged on his dinner takeaway and was offended I brought him this “special dinner” that was in his words “prepared 4 days ago” and the “fish was funky”. So we ordered a California roll lunch special, rolls were chewy and not fresh, salad had no dressing, 2 strange tasting dumpling things that again, I apologize, were not edible. The tempura was greasy and simply a homogenized deep fried hot mess. The tempura sauce was definitely watered down. The sashimi was not fresh, was chewy, and frankly tasteless. The soy sauce was also definitely watered down. I was deeply saddened by this meal as I rarely eat out these days due to the expense, but it was supposed to be a nice lunch out and this place had a very high rating compared to neighbouring restaurants. So to say that we were disappointed is an understatement, and again, I don’t write this lightheartedly. I love sushi, and I admittedly was fortunate for many years to live in a larger city which had some great establishments. And for the record I have had great sushi in Kingston, but not here. If anyone can recommend where I can go next time when in town, I would greatly appreciate it 🙏🙂 And again, I don’t write this flippantly. It is with a saddened heart. I work hard for my money and I wouldn’t want someone else to be so disappointed. That’s valuable grocery $.
Normally we like when the owner works, but on this Friday night, she was not there. The replacement Waiter staff had to be asked 3 times for drinks, our desert never came, and now my nephew is crying. I hope the owner comes back for Friday's.
Was possibly the worst sushi I’ve ever had. Place was cold. The Nori was like rubber. All the fish had a weird flavor. Picture is what I left behind.
I had rhe sushi ans sashimi combo for one, its was great. This plate had a miso ans salad included. The fish was fresh. It's a good sushi place for a quick weekday evening dinner.
I had an incredible dining experience at this sushi restaurant! The quality of the fish was top-notch—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Every dish was crafted with care, from the perfectly rolled sushi to the creative and delicious specialty rolls. The staff was welcoming and attentive, ensuring our meal was flawless from start to finish. The ambiance was cozy yet modern, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing meal. If you’re a sushi lover or just looking for a fantastic dining experience, I highly recommend this place!
Been here few times. The sushi quality is good and consistant. Decently priced sushi. Was kinda scared with online prices but when dined in its cheaper then online prices. Staff are friendly and good service. This time we tried having lunch and the the lunch combos are a steal. Had lunch combo c, spider roll and spicy salmon. Me and wife shared and was good lunch for under 50. Not bad for good sushi.
We ordered hot and cold rolls. the hot ones were already cold by the time we got to the park (10 minutes later), the rice was dry and there was very little fish. We were also disappointed that there was no container for the sauce, since we ate on the street this was important. I am disappointed (
Nice sushi place. The restraunt is spacious with nice but simplistic decorarions. They have a large variety of options (sushi and other) and the rolls are presented very nicely. The food is slightly overpriced for the amount of fish you get (thin slices) but the lunch specials offer the best value.
I got the chicken teryaki, crazy california, lobster rolls. The sushi didn t taste fresh. I had high hopes after reading the reviews, but it was disappointing.
Best sushi in Kingston!
Really good sushi
Delicious! We are gluten free and they easily accommodated us! They even have gluten free soy sauce ! 10/10
Akira is a great place to eat sushi. But the problem is that it is not all you can eat sushi. The ice cream was great and delicious. There was chandelier hanging from the ceiling. I really enjoyed the fancy dinner that I had. Kid-friendliness: The workers are very friendly to kids bring your kids anytime. Wheelchair accessibility: The wheelchair accessibility is great. But you need to sit at the end of the table or just place your wheelchair at the side of the table and sit down.
dynamite roll barely fit in my mouth and i found extra soy sauce in the airbnb fridge
Pricey but you get what you pay for
By far the best sushi in Kingston
Vegetarian options: Always asking for the Chefs selection for authentic Japanese: consistently superb!!! Thanks for such an enjoyable celebratory evening with my family!! Saki at the table Food : 5/5
Sushi sizes are about half that of normal sushi?, perhaps sizeflation.. the fish had an after taste and smell of being frozen too long and not fresh had both alacart and set menu.. both were not so fresh tasting. Presentation was nice, the service was friendly, I was hoping for a much better experience based on the reviews.
We were looking for a sushi place, and they didnt disappoint Very very good for the value received, will certainly be back when back in Kingston KJ North Bay Food : 4/5
it was tastety!!
This place takes me back to Japan. Their food, service, and delicately cut orange put in a bento box are telling this is a real Japanese restaurant. What is especially priceless in the tipflation era is that when we were paying, their machine didn t pop-up any tip suggestion. This is exactly how restaurants do in Japan. This last piece completes the proof for it being a real Japanese restaurant.
Cozy and quiet atmosphere, friendly service, and good food. Our waitress was very kind.
A go to Japanese restaurant for me. Food and service are both excellent. It does remind me of restaurants I have been in in Kyoto Japan. Vegetarian options: Great vegetarian options, around with fresh sushi and sashimi
Friendly professional service over the last decade. Food remains the best sushi I ve had in Canada. Bested only by one or two in California. Food
Ill admit that Im not a fan of raw fish or anything of the sort, but the chicken teriyaki dish was fantastic. The whole assortment of main course, salad and sides was really tasty and presented very nicely. Service was also great, and the wait was pretty reasonable!
I m a bit disappointed as this was my first time ordering from Akira. I decided to branch out from my usual go-to sushi restaurants and try somewhere new, and this place had good reviews. It took over an hour to get my food but it could have been a busy night so that s ok. But, the miso soup was literally all broth, not even a single piece of tofu. I ordered four kinds of nigiri, the maguro and ebi were decent but the salmon wasn t great - and in all cases, there was a ton of rice but I ve seen more generous portions of fish elsewhere. As for the tempura, the batter was extremely thick and again, more batter than shrimp, and the variety of veggies was kind of lacking - basically just sweet potato and onion. The rainbow dynamite roll was not my favourite. Normally, rainbow rolls are one of my favourites in terms of maki - but on top was mostly avocado and not much fish, and it was not indicated that they would be slathered in a kind of sweet sauce - I think that should be mentioned even on UberEats. I wasn t a fan of the sauce. I generally don t like mayo based sauces on sushi anyway, but the sweetness was a bit misplaced. I ve seen some reviews say it s hit or miss, so maybe I caught them on an off night. But I ll likely just stick to the other two places i typically order from.
Excellent bento boxes.
This sushi restaurant is the best Sushi restaurant in Kingston. The chef knows how to create the best rolls and perfectly made sushi. It s a humble family restaurant with true authentic Japanese cuisine.
Best sushi place in Kingston! Takeout and dine in. So good. Can t say it enough.
I love to eat fish here!!
The restaurant was not busy at the time we visited, around 3pm. The food was fresh... prepared and presented by an artisan. First time we have visited here, we will be definitely returning. A diamond in the rough! Fantastic.
A classy place with the most amazing sushi I ve ever had. Got some rolls for takeout, i cannot suggest this place enough
things are not fresh, and the waitress charge us extra $100 on the bill, end up $260 for 2 person.lucky we checked the bill. After that they added tips on the bill and cliam that is tax. which they doubled the tax, and claimimg the numbers are without tips. we questioned more then 3 times of this problem they finally put the right amount on the machine. Be very careful for the bill, they are doing it on purpose. we are not local, looks like a one time customer thats why they are doing this. $260 for 2 person LOL
I live close to here so I go in quite often. The salmon sashimi & salmon hand roll are my favourites. The slices of fish are thick and taste amazing. I highly recommend any sushi lover check this place out!
Thenoutsidenof this place is not appealing, but once you go in the restaurant is beautiful with a great atmosphere. Food is fantastic and generous in portion size. My favorite place to eat in Kingston.
Pretty decent spot for Japanese bento boxes. Would visit again to try their other items if I ever visit again.
Mine & my husband favourite spot! We went recently and staff were very attentive and kind. Food arrived quickly and fresh. It was nice and quiet so we could easily talk. Portion sizes for the price were very generous! I love everything down to the presentation & dishes. Always impressed and can t wait to go back again.
Best sushis in Kingston!
Love boat had nice selection of sushi/sashimi, rolls etc. Enough for dinner for 2 plus leftovers. Friendly service.
A delicious lunch at a fair price. The tempura and calamari and soba noodles were all great.
Really tasty!
Best sushi in town!
Quiet hidden gem. Outstanding food
Love this place! The food is delicious, beautifully displayed, colorful, and the portions are big. The Bento box is actually a pretty good deal (in my opinion). The rolls are huge and gorgeous.
Delicious food, economical lunches and great service.
Excellent food, good price, and very friendly and prompt service.
The best....love the sushi and the bulgogi is fantastic.....bento boxes are great value well put together and very tasty
Great place!
Its not the best sushi place Ive been in my life but after a year in Kingston we havent found better so far. Good rolls. Fresh food Their noodle soup are good too. Service is good and the waitress is always super gentle with our kid. We ate a few times here and will come back
Glad to see an small independent restaurant staying afloat after covid. Food was excellent.
This location transports you to a little Japanese restaurant. Food is amazing and service is prompt and polite. A must stop for sushi and sashimi lovers in Kingston. Dietary restrictions: They will adapt the food to your needs Parking: Over 30 spots shared between businesses. Wheelchair accessibility: Parking and ramp into business
Better than Sakura! - overheard while eating.
Super fresh sushi and Sashimi. The udon was hands-down the best Ive had in Kingston. Staff/owners very friendly.
So authentic. I go there each time I drive from Toronto to Montreal. Great sushis and sides in the bento box.
The sashimi here is top notch
My go too sushi take out spot. Im working my way through the menu one order at a time.
Delicious & Lovely presentation of dishes! I highly recommend Chicken Teriyaki and Golden California. Thanks, Akira team, for the perfect lunch! Food : 5/5
Amazing food, it was the best sushi Ive had.
Had takeout, received food pretty quickly. Sushi was a bit bland lots of rice and not a lot of flavour. Food
Amazing food, highly recommend!
Been wanting to try this place so we did. Enjoyed our meal ,the service was fast and friendly. The prices were fair, we will be back. Food : 4/5
The service is always great here, attentive hosts and quick service. Good sushi for the Kingston area.
Bottom line: have visited twice, and would return. The quality of the food is great and value is okay, but the service on our last visit was especially slow and inattentive. It was a Friday night and there was lots of take-out action, which I expect impacted the time it took to get our meals. I had three rolls, spicy salmon ($8), spicy tuna ($9) and a green dragon roll ($17) and really enjoyed them. My companion ordered a Vegetarian Bento Box ( E $26) and while she enjoyed it, it wasn t served has hot as expected. Vegetarian options: There are a variety of vegetarian sushi rolls, a veggie bento box and other main options for vegetarians. Parking: Shared parking in a busy commercial strip mall. Can be busy.
I ve been here before with much better service and quality of food but recently it has started going down hill
I like to go here for lunch during my break. They always serve me with a smile and quickly. I m never worried about being late returning to work as the service is always quick. Lunch is very affordable. $16-21 for the bento lunches which comes with miso soup, salad, 2 spring rolls, and an orange. Dinning room is dark as they always keep their blinds drawn closed for some reason. I d personally prefer more natural light. I had the spicy salmon and spicy tuna bento lunch special and was very full and satisfied. Parking: Parking lot is small and has a lot of potholes. Parking lot is shared with about 4-5 neighboring stores so parking can be limited
Outstanding value in a local sushi place! Lunch specials were well priced, came to the table quickly, and were amply sized! Excellent sushi and sashimi, and the rolls were executed very well, too!
Very good sushi. They really know what they are doing seems very authentic.
Very good all around restaurant! We got the loveboat and it was very filling and delicious.
Delicious food, friendly staff.
Came in for lunch and left very happy :) The lunch options were great and everything I had was delicious, service was also very kind and fast. 5 stars!
A friend brought lunch today from Akira, NEVER have I had anything so delicious!!! Cannot wait to have again!!
If you want something quick and nice off 401, this is not the place. Super disorganized, busy with take out orders. We watched all four tables waiting for ordering food, we just left.
Akira is a delicious spot if youre craving sushi. Tons of options, very fresh, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
Good service, nice people
Great sushi, well made and friendly service. However it was a little on the pricey side for the size of the meal.
So Im new to Kingston and am hitting up the sushi restaurants in town. This was the third one Ive tried, and by far the best. Sashimi is fresh, tempura is great, and they had tako yaki which I havent had since I lived in Japan. It was amazing. the sauce, the coating.. just like I remember. I think Im done exploring sushi restaurants. The family and I walked out stuffed and happy. Edit: Ive moved to Ottawa and now drive down for Akira. just went again tonight. so so good.
Fresh and delicious. Friendly service. Calamari tempura perfectly done. Maki rolls beyond compare Sushi and sashimi was phenomenal. Thank you!
Easily the best sushi in Kingston!
Great service, great food, great prices and my favorite sushi restaurant in town. I lost my wallet there and the owner hand delivered it to my house! I am so thankful and he has gained a life long customer.
Ordered from here twice now and it is probably some of the best sushi in town. Large sushi roll pieces and it all tastes amazing. Highly recommend the Salmon Lover & Tuna Lover rolls. Everything is always delicious, and excited to continue ordering from here!
Definitely recommend this location for sushi I dined in, the service was great and the food was tasty.
Love every experience here at Akira, from food, dining service and plating is absolutely marvellous!
Sushi, yes! But whats better than sushi? Deep fried sushi! So yeah, deep fried sushi!
The food is phenomenal and the service is great as well. The quality is always top notch and well presented. This is our go to place for Sushi.
Bento box with avocado/cucumber/ bell pepper/ mango roll, avocado/ cucumber roll, vegetable gyoza, salad, orange, and miso soup ( not pictured ). Fresh ingredients , quick service. Also had tempura which was !
Good sushi!
One of my top places for sushi in Kingston. Have yet to be disappointed !
A great quiet atmosphere with attentive and friendly staff. A constant pick for me and my partner. Quality is fantastic and food is always amazing!
Very friendly staff, quality and price of food is 2nd to none and service was quick. I love going here on my lunch breaks.
Excellent service, great environment and wonderful food. And the jasmine tea is phenomenal.
Sincere, I had doubts that I would eat something tasty here. One minus... Im not a connoisseur of Japanese cuisine and the menu without any photos made it difficult for me to choose something. My gourmand instinct has never lied to me . Very tasty and full. Something I have never tasted before. I recommend this restaurant.
The outside is pretty run-down looking, but the inside is comfortable and well-maintained. Service was a bit slow, but I think they were quite busy - I saw a lot of take-out orders leaving, something like 6x the in-restaurant orders. The food was excellent, fresh and tasty and well presented. Its certainly one of the best sushi restaurants in the Kingston area.
Favourite Japanese place in Kingston! Amazing maki rolls and very friendly staff
Lovely place, very tasty and good service
One of the best sushi places in town! The rice layer is so thin on the rolls, and everything is so fresh. Ordered from it twice and after trying a few other places, will be coming back to this one!
So yummy !!!!!!
Friendly staff. The sushi is always excellent. The Kamikaze roll is an all time favourite.
Quality, affordable sushi. Good sized portions. Friendly staff. Very popular sushi restaurant.
Fabulous food. We had gyoza and 2 dinner Bento combos (Salmon teriyaki and Bulgogi), the food quality was excellent. Good service too. The restaurant could use a little music to distract from the humming sound of the fridges/coolers but thats an easy fix. Definitely worth getting!
Fast, friendly, and delicious. Perfect location for meeting or catching the train.
The younger guy that works here is so rude to his young female staff worker and kept calling her stupid, very disappointing to see and hear. The food was okay, but can t stand to see people treated this way.
The food was beautiful and absolutely delicious. Employees are kind and accommodating. Parking: Lots of parking
What a wonderful experience my husband and I just had at Akira ! The fish was fresh, the presentation was great, and the portions were beyond gracious. The staff were all a delight- very courteous and eager to please. Cannot wait for our next visit! 10/10.
Great
Great and affordable sushi lunch in Kingston. Get extra spicy Salmon!
The food was really good, the staff very friendly. It was an overall amazing experience.
Fantastic sushi. Have ordered it many times and have always been very satisfied.
Spicey tuna and salmon roll. Amazing!
My go to spot in Kingston! Very good portions and reasonable prices. Very friendly staff as well
Great eats!
Great sushi
My wife and I ordered from here recently. We really enjoyed the food. My wife had really been craving sushi and thus guy the mark. The prices are competitive from what I can tell. The service was friendly too.
Great take out service, fast! Sushi was fresh and delicious!!
Good sushi but a bit pricy
Always fresh and good selection
Very poggers! I enjoyed the food! It was bussin bussin! Sheesh
Best sushi in town
Really good quality sushi. Big 2 bite rolls and sushi are fresh and delish. Great Service, and the entire team is nice and friendly. Go there, eat there, love it there!
We ordered here last night and it was amazing! Our usual sushi place is closing down so we were in a scramble for something new. However my palate is very reserved, while my partner is very adventurous with his food. Akira totally delivered. They had a huge assortment of both adventurous dishes and more sensitive-friendly foods. There were plenty of options for people like me who love veggie maki. They followed my requests and delivered incredible food. It was delicious and we were full and satisfied. The rolls were beautifully curated. My partner said the fish was very fresh and everything went well together. Will be back as new regulars!
Excellent sushi. Excellent service
Great spot off the highway. Really really good quality. Nice quiet people. Humble. Looks are not so appealing from the street. Don t be fooled.
The food is excellent and the staff is very friendly.
Found this hidden gem a few weeks ago! Come starving because the portion sizes are generous. Typically sushi is one, rarely two bites max because its eaten with chopsticks and difficult to eat any other way than to pop the whole morsel right in. We ordered our usual favorites for two and ended up taking enough leftovers home for a third person. I gauge every sushi restaurant by their tempura shrimp and these were good, not greasy and only complaint is, you had to order them as a combo with the tempura vegetables (which were good as well).
It was my first time going here for sushi. I bought a green dragon and a dynamite roll. Which is honestly a lot of food for one person! I think it was delicious and I cant wait to come back again.
Best Sushi in Kingston! Party Platters are super reasonable. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Great sushi
Best bento box I ve ever had
Great menu, friendly service, excellent food and prices, all hidden in a little strip mall next to fast food places and a convenience store. Worth finding.
The food was overall good. But, bulgogi had too much fat and partly not edible. Also be careful. It is quite pricey here. The menu on google map is not updated at all. The price for each dish was $6 higher, which made the total of 4 takeout dishes almost $100! It was already quite pricey on the old menu, but it got even less affordable after COVID. They should tell you the total of takeout on the phone when you place your order.
Hands down the best sushi in Kingston. I have been here 20+ times and never disappoints. Dining in is great, it is so quiet and peaceful, not the typical overcrowded or loud vibes. When my partner and I want to have a relaxed meal out, this is our spot. Staff are also always so pleasant and welcoming. Also the free parking right out front is a nice bonus :) definitely worth a try!
Great food! Almost as enjoyable and sus as playing amogus.
Nice place. Really good sushi! Stopped for a bite on the way back from Ottawa.
Service was very slow, but the food was very good.
Just tried out Akira for the first time. My immediate impression was cleanliness. Not only the restaurant, but even the menus were in good shape. I ordered a vegetarian bento box: sushi roll, vegetable tempura, small salad, orange, and miso soup. My first bite brought me back to Toronto and the top-of-the-line Japanese food I used to eat when I lived there. Bottom line, if you like Japanese food, this restaurant in Kingston is worth checking out.
Best Sushi in town!! We love this place!
Great lil spot for sushi. Always friendly and awesome service and great food.
Not bad food
Ordered takeout .was ok, gyoza soup was gross for all 3 of us
The food was delicious and excellent during these difficult times.
Very high class, authentic, excellent service and food. Honestly the best sushi experience Ive had in Ontario. Impressive for a small restaurant.
My absolute favourite sushi spot in Kingston. Large fresh delicious rolls. A hidden gem.
Food was fantastic, fresh, and beautifully presented! The miso soup was delicious!
Good food
Great sushi. Well worth the visit, dont judge by the outside decor.
Extensive menu, excellent food, artfully served (even on takeout). Usually less busy than downtown restaurants due to less central location.
Its pricy!! food was good and server was very nice.
Best sushi in Kingston!
We really enjoyed the Love Boat combo
Food are good super love it and clean. The owner should smile more
Always fresh food and welcoming staff.
Excellent sushi! Felt like very high quality and excellent presentation
Disappointed. Sushi pieces are huge which is great but it was very expensive in comparison to other sushi spots in town where you can get just as high of quality of sushi and much larger quantities for way less money. Also, the closing time was listed as 9/930 on the internet (multiple sites) when planning for dinner here so was not pleasant to be halfway through my meal to then be told they were closing in 5 mins. I think I ll stick to my usual sushi spot.
Not a. Sushi eater. But great staff and the. Atmosphere seems great.
Great food!
The bento box was good, however, it is a bit overpriced.
In a word. Fantastic!
Great food. Lovely atmosphere and the service is very friendly. If you go, I recommend you try the hot sake.
Great for lunch or dinner.
Good service and sushi
The best
