A downtown Kitchener institution with a line of locals either picking it up for their coworkers or simply stopping by to get their favourite banh mi, Banh Mi Givral Deli churns out crunchy, delicious bánh mì at an extremely affordable price, about six a piece. Each small sub is allotted with a juicy assortment of pickled vegetables, sweet and creamy mayo that doesn’t sink this submarine, and a great coterie of meats, it was a symphony of simple flavours and varied texture all the way through. The first two, the assorted meats and bbq pork, absolutely hit it home for us.
I was passing through Kitchener and looking for a quick bite to eat. Tiring of the usual fast food fare, I spotted this little establishment and decided to drop in. It's a quaint little shop without any dine-in options, essentially being a "grab and go" kind of place. It offers the usual Vietnamese Banh Mi fare and also includes sides like spring rolls and steamed buns as well. I went for the tried and tested assorted meats sandwich, which came out quick and hot. It was delicious and the prices are competitive, although their buns are a teeny bit smaller than some other Banh Mi places. If you're ever in the area and looking for a quick bite for lunch or even dinner, Banh Mi Givral is an excellent economical choice.
Every time we're downtown or near New City we make sure to stop in at Givral's. Everything we got isn't pictured here but the steamed buns with the pork and the hard boiled egg is so flavourful too. The fresh rolls are perfect with that little crisp inside and my favourite banh mi as recommended by a friend is the assorted meat but ask for double and definitely spicy, those fresh Thai chillies in there really make it! If you can't handle spice then don't get it though because they're just chopped raw and added to the sandwich. The atmosphere isn't the greatest but that's part of the charm, I've always had friendly service as well. I can see how this place is very nostalgic for many! We absolutely love all the food, even our kid loves it!
Very popular place for it's delicious and affordable banh mi. The beef teriyaki was delicious with tender beef with just the right amount of sauce. The assorted meat banh mi is actually one that I would pass on; it's not bad and it's not great. It's missing something that I can't quite identify. All buns are lightly toasted.
Love this little Vietnamese sandwich shop! Service was fast and friendly, the sandwiches were bomb 💣 and the prices are reasonable! What more could you ask for?! This shop has been around for years, and I can see why. If you haven't tried this place, you gotta get here!
Still delicious! Prices have gone up but still a good deal. Tried the fresh rolls this time and they were great too, but the buns rule! PREVIOUS: Amazing! You know it's an authentic banh mi Vietnamese sandwich shop when they have advertisements for income tax services posted in the window. Definitely a hole in the wall, but that's also where the beauty lies. Just a simple take out stripped down menu at unbeatable prices. These guys do one thing and do it exceptionally well, and that makes it our favourite banh mi shop. Seasoning, buns and main ingredients fresh and in perfect balance. You have to wait while they put it all together for you, but isn't that what you would want? They accept debit which is especially great now, and adhere to all the COVID rules with one party allowed in the shop at a time. Picking out what you want is easy with the sign out front, but newbies can't go wrong with assorted meat or our go to, BBQ pork. TIP: You may have to hunt around for street parking and there may be a bit of a wait at lunch when it's popular.

Just happened to be in Kitchener and decided to give them a try. Ordered #1, #2 and #4 sandwiches and although its just a walk up counter, bang for buck, you cant beat the value in K-W. Will happily come back. C m n, Cô Chú! Vegetarian options: I believe they have a veggie sandwich.

The quality for the price is simply unmatched.
Sub was ok but owner is rude. If your name shows up Vietnamese and you place your order speaking in English they are rude about it and wants you to speak Vietnamese. My Vietnamese is not fluent and with specific food order and toppings I dont even know the Vietnamese names for them - did not feel welcome here at all.
Take-out spot on King near Scott St with very tasty sub choices. Fried Spring Rolls are barely luke warm and blah. Givral had a monopoly on the Vietnamese sandwich street food scene in DT for approximately twenty years... Im looking forward to seeing what the new kid on the block is like as soon as they open for business street level in the new condo building on King near Cedar.
Not as good as it used to be. I didnt come in years but 3 weeks ago when i visited I asked for not spicy and it was spicy, they remade it but it was still spicy. I gave them another chance today and i reminded them a few times to make it not spicy. when i went up to get my order i asked again and the staff said oh thats spicy let me remake it . How can you forget so fast when i repeated myself twice? Anyway the remade one today was also spicy and the chicken (i ordered chicken teriyaki) was inedible, completely hard like rock. threw it out and went next door to buy one from the new city supermarket. Edit: the bread is also hard as rock and flakes get everywhere, super hard to eat just very unpleasant
Bought spring rolls there today, August 3/24. 6 for $7.89 or $1.45 each. There was not even 0.1% vegetable in it. It was doughy like they just rolled the wanton wrap and fry. I would not recommend anyone to buy their Spring Rolls. Really disgusting.

Beet banh mi in town
The best banh mi I ve had outside of Vietnam. Would choose Givral subs over any other banh mi shop here or the GTA 10/10 times. The skinnier baguette is . Great flavour and value. The meatball sub is my go-to favourite. The shop is family-owned and operated so I always pay cash so they can avoid the card payment fees (no credit, debit minimum $7). Get two subs! I always want a second after I finish my first and for $5ish, you can t complain much. Parking is a little difficult but you can luck out with street parking infront or park on market lane and walk over. You can call ahead to put in your order if you re in a rush.
Used to be the best kept secret in KW but now the word is out! Hands down the best veggie sandwich weve ever had. Sweet, spicy sauce and packed with flavor just an amazing sandwich. Hardest working kitchen in the city, great people, great food.
I was a regular customer but the service I had recently was terrible and the food quality has gone down hill. The last few times I went either the owner or older Asian male worker at the front was extremely rude. This kind of attitude shouldn t be interacting with customers at all. The buns they are using are completely different from a Vietnamese baguette and very chewy different from what they used to use.
Extremely rude customer service. Food is okay but the old guy working there should be fired if he s owner hope this store goes out of business. Disgusting behaviour there is no reason to get mad at customer who s waiting for his food and already paid i saw that behaviour and i felt extremely uncomfortable. I ordered the spicy chicken satay sub. Best sandwich I have had in a long time. Very fresh, delicious chuncks of cumumber, carrots ect. Sweet, spicy and quite tasty. Delicious buns and very tasty. The look of the place might isnt the best but look no further for value and qaulity. Super fast little takeout joint. Vegetarian options: They have a Veggie sub.

I first came to this establishment last summer and continued to go after. Never had Vietnamese food before and wow their bahn mi s are so good! As well as their fried spring rolls . It s also very cheap and affordable. Especially with the current prices in fast food I would say. I tried all their sandwiches except for the sardines however because I don t like fish or seafood much. And I would recommend all their sandwiches. You can get it mild or spicy.Also with the amount of people who come at lunch time they are so fast to prepare your food!

I can t be too harsh on this place as it is legitimately very cheap. Just over $5 for a bahn mi or really any sandwich is close to unattainable anywhere nowadays. But I do have to say the cleanliness and standards of this place are not great. And I can t stomach eating it again. the same hands that made my sandwich touched every counter and appliance in there, after counting cash and coins literally in front of me. Ordered 1 tofu and 2 chicken bahn mi which were both scooped into a bowl together, and microwaved, in front of me. The tofu one tasted quite good, but the chicken one was cold, probably because it was under the tofu when it was microwaving. If I was struggling, I d come here again but otherwise I m good.

Best banh mi Ive had in a while! Will definitely come back the next time Im in the area, to try out the other options! The bread was fresh and crispy to a perfection, and just the right amount of ingredients/sauce - truly exceptional for the price range around $5-7 Note: they do not accept credit card - its either cash or debit (as from a certain amount)
Greatest bánh mì shop. Tastes like home (enough said there). Quick service, in and out. Good pricing, just like how it should be. I drove from out town and it did not disappoint. Try the steam buns as well, 8 dollars for 2 huge ones is a great deal. 6 dollars for a good bánh mì is unheard of. Most places where I live would charge twice that much and its not even close. Highly recommended.

This is by far my favourite place to eat! The vegan sub is incredible, everything is fresh and tastes delicious. Amazing prices for the best food. The people who own it are so friendly, lighthearted and easy to talk to. Would highly recommend to anyone!

Literally the best place for banh mi! Ive tried places in Toronto/GTA that claim to have the best banh mi, but NOTHING compares to Givrel Deli! Staff is so friendly and efficient, and the banh mis always taste flavourful and fresh. All at an amazing price. LOVE IT!

Great stuff, do not sleep over these Bahn Mis. One of the best Vietnamese spots in the city and the sandwiches cost 5 bucks a pop. The bread was perfect, crusty and crisp on the outside just like a banh mi baguette should be. And every bite was a wave of freshness. There was a smear of red chilli past that I really enjoyed. Will be coming here soon to eat more. I would highly recommend the barbecue pork.

I love this place from the day I tried it years ago living close by when the subs were 2.50 priced may have gone up but they are worth every cent. They accommodate so easily when you pop in or call ahead. We always get BBQ pork times two one extra onion no cilantro and extra garlic mayo other one everything and spicy! Thank you for being around and I hope you will be for a super long time! Your subs are a staple to our downtown sub experience! :) Kid-friendliness: Always very accommodating for their customer! They personalised our experience always! :)

I usually buy from here every month about 4-6 assorted subs, which I used to think was the best sub in town. About 4 months ago they changed the recipe, no pate anymore and they dropped one of their sauces too. Worst of all they downgraded their meat. I thought maybe it was temporary air I would get used to them, but the batch I just bought I ate my first sub and am considering throwing the other 4 in the garbage. I just don t like the new subs taste at all.

Best sandwiches in town
I have been coming here for close to 15 years. They are always very friendly and the sandwiches are the best I ve had anywhere. I don t even try other places because I m always disappointed that I didn t just come here. For some reason I think the bread is different I just bought some sandwiches today and for the first time ever they aren t the same I probably ate well over 100 of these over the years and the consistency was always bang on. In my opinion the bread is a huge factor, the sandwich just isn t the same without the crusty mini baguette Vegetarian options: I m sure you can get the sandwich with no meat. I think it would still be very tasty

Delicious Banh Mi every time and at the best price point Ive found in the KW area. I always get the Spicy Chicken Satay - it *does* have some scotch bonnet for that delicious heat, but used pretty sparingly so if you like it hot dont be scared to try it!
Fairly standard Banh Mi , with decent ingredients for a good price. Nothing special, we came when it was kinda busy so the service was a bit rough. It really made me feel like a Chinatown place in Kitchener.

You go there for food not atmosphere. Great banh mi. Great owners. We go there every time we come to KW area. The vegetarian banh mi is great. The flavors and style is different from the other banh mi but thats whats special about Givral.
A true hidden gem along King St if you are looking for a sandwich. We tried the BBQ Pork and Satay Chicken Banh Mi and they were both amazing. The bread is absolute perfection and the service was very quick as well. If you have not been here then you are missing out.

They havent changed much in the 14 years Ive been going. They are consistently tasty and cheap (can still get a meal for less than $10). Just dont go if you are in a hurry. Theyre well worth the wait, but they are very popular so it is sometimes a wait. Vegetarian options: Their spring rolls are usually vegan, and both the veggie special and the fresh rolls can be made vegan on request. Kid-friendliness: Theres nothing a kid couldnt eat. Maybe ask for not spicy if your kids havent built up a spice tolerance yet.

One of my favourites. Subs are always delicious and they can make it truely spicy if you ask (but it is hot!). Assorted, spicy chicken, and sardines are my favourites.
I was handed a delicious sandwich within 60 seconds of walking in, bread really fresh and crispy, best $5 meal ive had in a long time.
For the price, the food is great and the customer service is excellent. We got 2 BBQ Pork banh mi made mildly spicy and 2 steamed buns to go. The ingredients were all fresh, the buns were crispy, and you could ask them to lower the spice level. It was perfect for our picnic. Just a side note, they only take cash or debit.

If you are ever craving for authentic Vietnamese Banh Mi aka Sub then this is the place to go. I like to order Spicy BBQ Pork and Spicy chicken teriyaki. Nowadays its very busy and if you walk in and order, expect a 15-20 min wait. The best way to order would be over the phone that way you just pick it up when its ready. No waiting. Just my opinion

Great Bahn Mi! The bread and the veg were all so fresh. I had the spicy bbq park which was delicious but not very spicy. I also had two of the meat spring rolls which were fried to the perfect crispness and not at all greasy though I would have preferred them a bit warmer. The place is not fancy at all and the service direct and no nonsense. It is the real deal and I wouldnt have it any other way. I highly recommend, it lived up to the hype.

By far, it is the best banh mi places in the area. It has decent prices, and everything is made fresh. I got the Spicy Chicken Satay, which had a good amount of heat and a decent portionand Fresh Rolls was balanced as it had a crunchy element to give the soft rolls some texture. It also had a tangy peanut sauce that complimented the rolls perfectly.

I get the BBQ Pork everytime. Its 4.75 so I usually get two cause its a $7.00 minimum for debit. Ive been going here for years since I used to work downtown Kitchener. The staff are polite and extremely polite to me. They recently changed bread and I find it to be much better. The sandwich is so more full. Thanks
First time here! It was a little chaotic because I didnt realize ordering ahead of time would be better thats on me, but I was so pleased with the Banh Mi. I ordered the BBQ pork (spicy) and a spring roll. The spring roll was not very good at all quite honestly (very hard and chewy), but I still rated 5 stars because the Banh Mi was *chefs kiss* The cilantro, pickled veg, and sauce were absolutely delicious. The spice level was perfect and the meat was so flavourful. This was the perfect work lunch and for like $4.50 a sandwich- you cant go wrong. The only real, authentic banh mi you should get in the KW region. As a Vietnamese-Canadian who moved away from all my favorite Vietnamese spots out in Toronto, and this was like coming home.

My white boyfriend loves the beef banh mi. Quick and friendly service always making the best banh mi s. The price is about ~$5 for about a foot long. If you are buying more than 3-5 banh mi, I would recommend calling in the order and picking it up later as it is a very popular spot!

Delicious! I had a craving and my friend had never tried a banh mi. I d never been here before (just moved into town) but thrilled to have stumbled upon this shop and will definitely visit again. Friend is also a new banh mi fan.
Prices are fair but the size is a little small. Perhaps order two sandwiches if youre a big eater. The wait isnt too long. Parking: Park at new city supermarket in the lot behind King.

Great sandwiches and cheap prices. I got a bbq pork and spicy chicken sandwich with a soda for takeout. Crisp buns and fresh vegetables inside. Sauce had some nice sweet flavour too. Ill be back for sure!

Good price. Vegetarian Special is my go-to: yum. But the best thing here, when the have it, are the sesame buns. So pillow-y soft and tasty. Vegetarian options: Only a couple of items available, but if youre in the mood for banh mi, its the place to go.
