Amazing. Incredible. Phenomenal. What a bloody treat! Went there last night and from start to finish it was incredible. The ten courses each had their own spectacular taste and we decided to go with the wine pairing - the wine glasses were extremely generous. The restaurant was very accommodating to my allergies - they even remembered them and the dish i had as a replacement was potentially my favourite (i did mention for it to be put back on the menu!). Really thank you for such an incredible night, we really won’t forget it. Special mention to Connor, Audrey, Olivier, Giorgio and Andy (sorry if I missed anyone). Will be telling everyone about this night for many years to come.

It was a fantastic experience, showing just how unique flavours can come from simple ingredients. Perfect for seafood lovers, though they’re more than happy to accommodate non-meat eaters as well. While we expected mostly seafood, the chef surprised us with refreshing herb sorbets and fruity shots between courses, which was a delightful touch. The atmosphere is definitely more relaxed than most fine dining spots, with soft lighting and mellow music adding to the charm. The chefs were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making it feel almost like dining at home with friends. And don’t miss out on checking the unique restrooms while you’re there.

Here’s a great example of a Michelin-experience made right. Setting is a very design-friendly chefs table with the perfect ambience and acoustics. Service is right on point with great hosting, relaxed conversations and highly knowledgeable about their food and preparation. The food follows the key. Perfectly, and thoughtfully, balanced and prepared to give you something from the whole taste palate. Went for the lunch set-menu, which was very good value-for-monetary £64pp. Highly recommend other to do the same, or entrust them for a dinner. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. - Value for money? I heard so many good things about this place before I decided to make a reservation. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of seafood but I was convinced to give this place a shot and safe to say I was not disappointed at all. 8-course tasting menu £118 pp (when i went) and one-seating per night. Unlike some fine dining restaurants, Behind was bang for buck. Each dish was well crafted with a lot of thought put into it. I would say that I felt like the food had a lot of elements of Japanese-like flavours which was very much to my palette!

I have not ever gave a review for a restaurant before because I just assumed they were doing their job in providing such a good service let alone writing a review straight after I ate because of the experience I got from it. So where do I start, 1. The service, from the head chef called Andy to the sommelier who knew everything there was to know about the wines on the wine flight this evening was immaculate. My father is a huge advocate for Chenin blanc and andy saw that and wanted my father to try this immaculate bottle from South Africa and hoped that my father would love it! (Which he did). 2. Every dish that was brought out to us was explained thoroughly in detail with enthusiasm which you could see the chefs put hours of work into and cared that we enjoyed it and knew every little detail there was to know about the dishes from how they were made to where the produce from. ( along with the wines too). Also with the fact that you got to speak to every chef working on the night and not just one chef who was assigned to your table. 3. Then last but not least. The atmosphere! You hear a 12 seater table and think youre all bunched up together however thats not the case. Each reservation is carefully thought out on where youre sat for the duration of the night with space in between each other so that it feels like youre on your own separate table. It is genuinely the best restaurant Ive ever been too and whether its your birthday, anniversary or payday (which is was for us ) you wont regret it!.

They dont let you cancel your reservation through opentable, they dont list their phone number on their website do they dont let you call, and even though I emailed them and messaged them on the open table platform *before* the 24 hour cancellation they still charged me as a no show. And when i notified them about this they did not respond.

Our six-course chefs tasting lunch menu at Behind was a special treat. Five chefs and no wait staff. The chefs served and explained the dishes one by one. The visual feast, the intense flavours, the anticipation as we watched them working in the kitchen and plating to perfection it all added up to a supremely special experience. I do wish theyd given us a menu because there was an incredible amount of detail in every dish and I cant remember it all. The photos show all five chefs at work. The first course was the only one that had more than one component four in all. The silky striped sauce was added at the table to great effect. Two or three trout eggs are nestled amongst the edible flowers. The tasty crispy cracker was so thin it melted in your mouth. The next course was half a quail egg filled with teensy little shrimp with tiny black eyes surrounded by delicate ramen and sea ramen. All eaten with a utensil that looked like a small pair of tongs, much easier to wield than chopsticks. On finishing, we were advised to pick up the bowl and slurp down the divine broth. The dessert was some of the best chocolate Ive ever had with another cracker, sweet this time, and a perfect quenelle of ice cream in between. (My daughter told me thats what its called - shes passionate about food and researches where to eat whenever I visit her in London from Canada.) We also really enjoyed the five chefs and their multiple nationalities and accents. A marvellous experience overall.

Went for lunch on 29th December, and the meal was outstanding. The experience was in part a gift for my nephew (12) and he had the most remarkable time. The staff were kind and generous and even took him on a small tour of the kitchen. The tasting menu was fish-based with a real effort on local produce. Each dish was creative designed and delicious, and it certainly ranks among the best meals in London. Solid wine list as well. We will certainly return.

We were lucky enough to be invited to Behind by our son and his wife who already knew its delights. From the word go, the impression we received was highly favourable. My friends and I spent a lovely evening at Behind after wanting to visit for some time. Unfortunately, over the following days all four of us experienced sickness and feeling quite unwell. As Behind was the only restaurant where all of us ate together, it made sense that the meal we had enjoyed was unfortunately the cause. What followed however was a more painful experience. The restaurant was initially responsive and sympathetic before taking weeks to follow up. Apparently they asked all the other patrons if they were unwell (no idea if that is true) and apparently we were the only ones who were ill. The tone of the messages and interrogation that followed was unpleasant clearly implying we were not being truthful. They repeatedly asked us what compensation we would like before not accepting any responsibility at all. A simple heartfelt apology would have sufficed and we had expected much better levels of service from any restaurant, let alone one with a Michelin star.

The 3 stars are for vibe, format and food presentation. Everyone in the restaurant starts at the same time with all the courses served at the same time, true fine dining setting. However, the food itself is not overwhelming for someone like me who grew up by the sea eating seafood every day. The cooking did not bring out the best of the ingredients. In their dishes you can no longer see the ingredients. While it s normal for normal fine dining, I think the rule for seafood is different. The cooking focuses too much on cooking, and forgets about the basics of seafood. For fresh seafood, simply boiling or steaming would guarantee fantastic taste and texture. One way I judge a seafood dish is whether I would rather eat the plain boiled version. If all the labour doesn t enhance the taste, what is the point?

Ive been fortunate enough to dine at a lot of really high end restaurants in my life and this was one of the best meals Ive ever had. As one would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant, the quality of the ingredients and the plating was excellent. The wine pairing was very good as well. But lots of places get those things right. The true strength of this restaurant was the sauces. From a basil tarragon foam to a corriander lassi to riesling and mackerel consomme, these were some of the tastiest liquids I have ever experienced.

We ate at Behind on April 27, and it was fantastic. Watching the guys work and how they explain the dishes to you and serve you the wines makes it a much closer and friendlier experience. We chose the wine pairing and it was a success, we liked it a lot. We told them that we are not English and they tried to explain the dishes to us more slowly so that we could understand everything perfectly, they were very kind. Delicious food, tasty, elegant dishes with quality products. Delicious stingray, and the blue cheese dessert with the apple and rhubarb tartlet. We still dream of the flaky butter and almond roll that accompanied the second pass, I wish we always had one ready for breakfast! Its a shame that the restaurant is a little far from the usual tourist circuit and you have to go there on purpose, but its well worth it. I recommend it to everybody. Many thanks to the whole team!

I really appreciated the concept of not wasting any products. Most of the food that was served was tasty. A couple of standout flavour dishes and a few that were just OK. The first course took a really long time to arrive; we werent really given much of an explanation on how the meal would work. Only having sat down for 20 mins did we get told we wouldnt get a menu and as the dishes came out; it was implied that everyone would be served at the same time. The desserts certainly did leave us ending the meal on a high note but I do have to agree that I wasnt 100% full after a 8 course meal. My friend even joked that we were fed a lot of liquids towards the end to fill us up. I could also see a noticeable inconsistency across the portion sizes between me and my two friends. We joked that I might have said something to always receive the smallest portions. However, what will stop me from coming back is the service. There was one really friendly and cheerful waiter on the day, however overall; my friends and I felt the service was pretentious and unfriendly. Whilst not rude, we didnt feel very welcome at any point and didnt leave us feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Any sort of general chit chat felt forced and ingenuine.

I recently had the opportunity to dine at this chefs table, known for its surprise seafood-focused menu. Heres my take on t to he experience. The service was a bit of a mixed bag. It wasnt unfriendly, but it didnt quite exude the warmth youd hope for in a dining establishment. It seemed as though the staff were efficient but not overly engaging. Now, onto the food. The meal started on a high note with the first few dishes, which were truly enjoyable. However, it was disappointing that the latter dishes were marred by excessive saltiness, which left a less than pleasant aftertaste. It was a sharp contrast to the promising start. Overall, dining here is indeed an experience, but it may not be one that compels me to return. While the surprise menu and the initial courses were memorable, the inconsistency in service and food quality left a lot to be desired. If youre an adventurous diner looking for something different, it might be worth a try, but be prepared for a mixed experience.

Sitting at the chefs table was an amazing experience. Alongside only 8 other guests, we watched the chefs prepare and serve our meals while taking the time to explain them to us. The place felt cozy and stylish and talking to the chefs made it very special. Just for this, they deserve top marks. As for the food, it was mostly fish dishes. The meal started with mackerel and trout, both with surprising flavors that balanced well. Everything was nicely done. The prawn broth and pumpkin crab ravioli were my favorites. The cod cheek looked great but tasted too salty and needed something more, maybe a bit of sourness. But that didn t impact our 5 star experience.

Pros: The room design is unique and chefs will make you feel like a king with a fairly personalized service; flavours are pretty good; lunch menu is quite affordable too. Having said that, some cons you need to consider: 1) lots of downtime between courses, all guests are served at the same time, you cant leave earlier; 2) some dishes are more academic exercises (e.g., oyster with foamy cucumber) than extraordinary ones; 3) chefs will have to finish off their work during the service, so you wont have much chance to discuss the dishes. Besides they always whisper, in a rather noisy environment its non-sense 4) shared table means you have the opportunity to meet new people but also much less privacy than other starred venues. In conclusion, a fish-based menu seems a challenge to consistently prepare dishes worth the hype. The experience can be rated 4, food and downsides as above push for a 3

Going to Behind is an experience. We went to a lot of great restaurants already, but this one is special. The chefs are doing The cooking which you can see from your seats and at the same time they are also serving it. Food was extremely good, the wine pairing was sublime, the chef and his team really looked after us, with the chef walking around pouring wine himself, talking about the wine and produce the whole experience was exceptional. 1 Michelin star spot with a great sweeping wooden table top counter dining that seated 14 around it. Very close to brat at climpsons arch in London fields. Firstly the staff were all fantastic - the chefs served all the dishes and were really approachable and great to chat about the food and menu with. The sommelier was also particularly friendly and knowledgeable and just a lovely person. Really nice to see Andy Beynon himself taking time to chat with all the diners in the restaurant and clearly took pride in his food and the restaurant. In terms of the food itself, it s a surprise seafood focussed tasting menu (you get the menu at the end as a takeaway), with c.14 courses which means each is relatively small and ultimately very fine dining if you know what I mean, but not necessarily in a good way. Whilst everything was cooked well with ok flavours, it s hard to classify many of the dishes as truly standout that you are going to be yearning for over the next few days/weeks/months or raving about to friends and family. It was all technically proficient cooking for sure but would love to see some more innovative ideas on the plate and more knockout flavours. Crab, hake, and guinea fowl dishes were the highlights for us. Total bill c.£208 for two with a couple of drinks each. Overall 13/20

Andy Beynons restaurant is a wonderful space that reflects his passion and drive. There is an 18-cover copper horseshoe counter encircling the kitchen with a couple of rectangular tables almost in the kitchen space itself, all with fantastic views of the meal as it is being prepared. The ceiling is warehouse bare and the music reflects Beynons personal tastes and is balanced to the course being offered. Beynon is an accomplished chef and a charming host. The chef and his brigade are part of the service at Behind, talking to diners about each dish as it is presented to them. I have sampled some of Beynons creations at City and Pollen Street Socials, when he was Jason Athertons development chef, as well as at Hibiscus where he supported Claude Bosi. He has imagination and flair and it is little surprise that he landed a Michelin star within 21 days of opening his own place. We enjoyed the 8 course tasting menu as a surprise (i.e. we did not want to know in advance what we would be eating). The whole room gets the same meal, with slight adaptions for dietary requirements. We also asked for the wine pairing. It is clear from the wine list that Beynon values artisan producers and is ethically inclined - there are many organic options from small vineyards across the globe. The main focus is on seafood, sustainable, best-on-the-day produce that is served with care and a keen attention to detail. The brigade are not trapped at a particular station but move according to their role, as well as coming out of the kitchen to present their creations. On our visit we enjoyed fresh peas, smoked trout and pike garnished with trout roe, served in a paper thin fine pastry shell with pea shoots - a wonderful, textured mouthful; native oyster taco and oyster with cucumber, buttermilk, horseradish and oyster foam; crab pannacotta with white meat and sliced sharp gooseberries from Beynons mothers allotment - a successful combination that has made more people than just his mother smile; another crab dish with ajo blanco and melon and cucumber balls with a warm crab broth and fine sardine toast; scallops with pickled fennel; wonderous hake, roasted, in a sherry sauce, served with fish croquettes coated in crisp scales and a silky, smoky mash scattered with seeds (the wine pairing to this was sublime - a glorious Spanish Red tasting of smoked Ribena); tender 7 day-hung guinea fowl accompanied by a superb South African granache from Wellington; a potion of rhubarb served in a tall glass with a foam to cleanse the palate; a subtle herb sorbet (basil, tarragon and verbena) served with lemon curd custard - quite sublime with a sharp raspberry and calamari sorbet with white strawberries as a refreshing finisher; a white chocolate and cardamom bomb; and a going home gift of freshly baked brioche pastry to go with coffee next day - a delicious reminder of the night before. Beynon is a cool Hackney resident running a very cool Hackney venue. That he finds time to be a loving father and husband on top of steering his culinary dream is amazing. He recruited one of his brigade when the pair of them were taking their kids out for a stroll and recognised each other and got talking. Great to live and work locally at such a fantastic restaurant. My wife and I did not have the opportunity to actually visit Behind because, on the day of our reservation, my wife had a strong reaction to her second jab and could barely get out of bed. My wife called the restaurant to see if we could postpone our visit by leaving a message. However, a couple of hours later, the owner called to inform us he would not refund or credit the £120 we had put down as a deposit due to their cancellation policy. She was disappointed but understood as it was the same day. When I came home 30 minutes later and she told me this, I suggested we allow our good friends to take our reservation. I immediately called the restaurant but nobody picked up. I called again at 5:30 pm and again at 6 pm when I reached the owner to let him know our friends would be taking our 7:30 pm reservation. His response shocked me - he said he would not allow our friends to take our reservation (he claims now that the voucher is non-tranferable but we could not find that in this policies) because he had already set the table. When I protested that we had already paid most of the bill, he curtly dismissed me by telling me it was too late to make a change. I pointed out that I had been trying for an hour to reach him, and he admitted that he was too busy to answer the phone before 6 pm. I tried to reason with the owner when he became agitated and abruptly told me he would return our money. In the interest of compromise, I offered to take a credit if he preferred to which he shouted FINE! and hung up the phone on me. After I had been treated this way, my wife was not terribly interested in going to Behind, but I wanted to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt in case the owner was simply having an off night. However, when I emailed Behind about the credit, the owner wrote back denying us a credit or refund due to their policy for cancellations. He completely disregarded his promise to refund or credit our money and did not even apologise for his earlier behaviour. Perhaps this restaurant has good food and maybe you will not be treated as poorly as I was, but do not expect any customer service if you have an issue with the owner of Behind. We have been to many restaurants and this was by far the worst we have ever been treated.

I cancelled my reservation for Covid related reasons through their booking platform, Seven Rooms. They ended up charging me £120. Horrific customer experience, especially during a time where cancellations are common and I followed the right process with their booking platform.

My overall grade for Behind is: A+ While watching the Michelin stars for Europe being announced, I quickly made reservations at Behind for our upcoming trip to London. So glad we were able to secure a seating. The restaurant seats everyone in a large circular bar type of area. Where everyone can see the chefs do their magic. The offering is a large menu that mostly spans seafood. Each course was absolutely perfect and quite inventive with a very nice variety. There was one meat dish, but for the most part, seafood was in the spotlight. I had the wine parings and the only thing I might consider changing is pouring slightly smaller wine pours and changing them more often as that has been what Ive experienced most with tasting menus. I will come back and update this review from my notes of all the courses, but for now, suffice it to say, that this is a real gem. It is a bit out of the way from Central London, but worth the trip. If you are adventurous and are ok not knowing exactly everything that youre about to be served, you will love Behind.

Perhaps the best meal I ve ever had. Loved the intimate horseshoe table setting, the interactions with the staff and explanations of each of the dishes and of course the course the mouth-watering, delicious food. If you love seafood, this is like going to heaven.

Everything about Behind was perfect. The intimate horseshoe table setting with full view of the kitchen and prep. The attentive and friendly staff, and most importantly the incredible food! Every course was absolutely delicious - which is unusual, there s normally one I m not so keen on but every of the 10 were delicious! Very seafood focused which is partly why we went (I m pescatarian) and everything is locally sourced which we loved. They only have one seating per evening and so you aren t rushed and it felt like a very relaxed experience. Very reasonably priced as well. Would highly recommend, we will definitely be back!
