Dining on the boat done! What a great culinary experience that was. The food was to die for (wontons are a must), delicious cocktails, super friendly staff and unusual ambience. Thank you for making our pre-Christmas catch up so special.

I was invited there for dinner by my sister and her partner. To be honest, at first I was kind of sceptical about what kind of a place it is since it looks a bit deserted outside. However, it turned out to be a total surprise for me in the end. I was amazed by the taste of all the dishes I ordered (focaccia with a mushroom butter, pumpkin soup and Angus ox cheeks as starters; fried aubergine with crispy lettuce touches and the onglet steak with the delicious sauce 😋). I would have had a dessert afterwards but sadly we didn’t have much time for that because we had to catch the basketball game in the end. All in all, it was a great experience with excellent & quick service by experienced staff in this small boat! ⛴️

The other day, I had dinner with friends at Barge East. When I first arrived in the evening, I thought the place was closed or empty. But as soon as I stepped inside, I was blown away by the ambiance they had created on the boat. The lights and candles set such a cozy, magical atmosphere that we instantly fell in love with it. I was especially happy to find draft beer on such a small boat. Every dish we tried was amazing, with each bite offering a different burst of flavor. We started with focaccia, which came with a mushroom butter that was absolutely delicious. The pumpkin soup was incredible, and the Angus ox cheeks we had as a starter were outstanding. For the mains, the aubergine was a flavor explosion! However, the onglet steak had a slight odor that I found off-putting—though it might just be because I’m quite sensitive to it. Other than that, everything was perfect. The service was excellent, and the staff made the experience even more enjoyable. They are doing an amazing job on this small boat—truly impressive!

We dined tonight for the new menu all I can say is my taste buds are summersaulting! The flavours and combinations are amazing and definitely worth a try. I would recommend going for a collab of small plates and a main to top it off with a vermouth to finish! Thanks team Barge East!

Good food and drinks and amazing atmosphere and service. I loved having lunch with a view of the canal. The restaurant and the general area have a lovely buzzy vibe. Some of the food options are quite special so may not be to everyone's taste. I shared a few small plates, and some of the flavour combinations weren't for me. E.g. the oysters with sour cream--it wasn't a BAD combination, but i think oysters are better on their own. However despite that i still respect that the dishes were a bit more experimental rather than the same as what you get everywhere else. There were plenty of more classic options on the menu as well though if that's what you're after. All in all i had a good time and would come back!

Such a great experience. The staff were so accommodating on a number of issues and so lovely. The ambience is the best - music, lighting, beautiful venue. Gave such a nice chill British 2000s feel! The food was exquisite. We ordered the steak, beef tartare, crab sando, cabbage and asparagus. For me the highlight was the cabbage and tartare but honestly everything was stunning. Will definitely be back again. The whole venue beyond the restaurant is amazing too, a real show stopper. You can tell the staff genuinely are passionate about offering a high quality experience and making sure their guests have a great time. Loved it!

Was looking for something different for my partner's birthday. Loved it. Quirky location, great atmosphere, fantastic food and fast and friendly service. Loved the cocktails, oysters and fish specials of the day. Everything is well put together and sticks to the theme. Great vibe and music too. We'll be back. Only small thing to improve could be catering to special bookings. I stated in my reservation that it's my partner's birthday. Of course not mandatory at all but it's always nice when places add that tiny bit of extra for the special occasion. Could be a small desert with a candle. Just as a cherry on top.

Food was tasty but very slow, and all of the portions were fairly small. You need to add sides, otherwise your main is literally just the piece of meat youve chosen.

We had our Christmas party at Barge East this week and it was so wonderful - the team are super responsive beforehand, the food was great (Ive never had a better nut roast), the staff are super helpful and friendly and its just a really lovely venue. They were also really great re. allergens - we have a couple of coeliacs and the team were very mindful of their dishes, it was so great that they were able to fully participate in a food-based social event! I had people coming up to me all night saying how nice it was, and our CEO was thrilled. Would highly recommend! Vegetarian options: We had nut roast as the vegetarian / vegan option, it was delicious and the accompaniments were to die for! Dietary restrictions: We have a couple of coeliacs and the Barge East team was really careful to make sure they got the right meals, it was really appreciated.

Beautiful and unique venue. I particularly like the area on the canal verge in spring and summer, always a good atmosphere and service. On this occasion I went to a Christmas dinner and party - wonderful to have an intimate space but the acoustics were tricky and cooking for a very large table in one go isn t easy. The roast beef dinner in a Yorkshire pudding were incredible !

Nice location and staff were friendly but food was terrible. Inedible fries with salt and overcooked. Really bad veggie burger with so much mango chutney it was difficult to tell what else was in the burger. And we had a burrata salad with some baguette when menu said it would come with focaccia. Not the cheapest either so definitely worth eating elsewhere.

Food-wise, portions are relatively small and not very well executed. We got the pidgeon and the steak and both were bland, unseasoned. The venue is really nice, but downstairs it gets so loud that it loses the nice intimate vibes. We arrived late (20-25 minutes) and we didn t get a very nice welcome.

I came here to celebrate my partner s birthday with a group of 14. We booked the canopy which had a lovely view of the canal. It s in a great location in hackney wick - close to the station and easy to get to by foot. They had great comms prior to booking and were able to take a la carte orders on the day. The staff working on the day were very kind, professional and organised - shoutout to Dylan who took our order and looked after us! The food was absolutely incredible too and cooked to perfection. Wine choices were fab also and beers were tasty. They also gave us hot water bottles and blankets when we waited for our table to be prepared outside on the deck. Couldn t recommend this place enough for a nice date, special occasion or just a solo visit! Thanks Barge East :) will definitely be returning and recommending this place to friends.

We recently visited this restaurant and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. The food was far from enjoyable, small portions and not tasty. We spent more than £60 per person. It was very poor value for money. On top of that, the environment was cold and uncomfortable due to inadequate heating, making it hard to relax or enjoy the meal. Overall, we left feeling dissatisfied and would not recommend this restaurant to others.

Shocking place that takes advantage of their location. Very expensive food and the flat bread mezze, which costs £13, came with deep fried something (Im not actually sure what it was) so we asked for non deep fried flat bread and got sliced up bread (photo). Half the beer taps were off. They couldnt handle the number of people so the queue was long. Id avoid this place. Awful.

Updated review following response from owner: The venue absolutely DID NOT provide me with a further larger portion as per their response as I didnt mention the portion size to them when I visited - not sure what a blatent lie hoped to achieve however based on this there are many places in the area & London which Id rather give my business too. Original review: Location is decent and venue is nice. We sat in the garden area off the canal rather than in the barge. The food portions were on the smaller side and tasted ok, would only visit again for the venue being decent for a group setting. FYI, the toilets are mixed use, didnt bother me but may bother some.

We ate inside the barge - a beautifully decorated and well thought out space. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the cocktails were excellent and the food was interesting and delicious. We had a lovely time at this restaurant its a charming spot with great potential. However, the service was much slower than we expected. Despite booking a table for our group of 12 in advance, it took about 1.5 hours just for our orders to be taken. We ended up rushing through our meal to make it to the nearby ABBA show, which was only 15 minutes away. Luckily, we got there with five minutes to spare, but it was a close call!

Barge East had been on our radar for some time and we decided to visit for a date night. We had a table on the deck which was nice and the atmosphere was bustling as you would expect on a Saturday night in Hackney Wick. The young man that seated and served us was friendly and helpful. We ordered a bottle of red & 3 starters. The Focaccia, Cod Croquettes and the Pork Belly Taco which were all delicious and were excited for our main course, we both went for the BBQ d Monkfish. Unfortunately our mains were cold and overcooked which was very disappointing. Our server handled the situation well and our mains were taken off the bill. Although we agreed to put the experience down to the kitchen having an off night, it s unlikely we will return.

Very expensive for what you get. Food portions were small, my husbands rabbit portion was small, dry and tough, my fish was ok with some fancy sounding sauce. Dissapointing though when they charge £35 just for the meat, no vegetables or starch included. We had a voucher given to us fo£100. for a special celebration. We had one orange juice and one sangria between us. When we told our, must say very friendly waiter, that we were a bit dissapointed that some of the food was also black because it had been on a grill, he spoke to the manager and managed to get us a little strawberry pudding to share for free. Dietary restrictions: They offered a selection of glutenfree foods which my husband needs.

Sadly not a great experience at the Garden restaurant. Was asked to go up to the bar to pay when we were served, rather than after the meal or even when I ordered. £11 tomato burrata salad was bad. Tomatoes were plain, hardly dressed, definitely not marinated. The focaccia was two small, thin, chewy bits. Greens and leaves was only rocket... Full price would have been unacceptable (we used the weekday discount). I would come back to try the Boat restaurant as reviews are better... Location was amazing, such a shame as it has a lot of potential.

As the restaurant is not open on a Tuesday lunchtime ( Thursday to Sunday ) we were in the garden which was lively and sunny and lets you see the world go by....... We went with a selection of small plates and these are tasty and very enjoyable ( we had to ask for plates to eat off as it got messy quickly otherwise!). The food, which is why youre considering this place tasted amazing but be prepared to wait for it. Our party of two was waiting 45 minutes for some tap water and nearly an hour for 2 mains, while a party of 10 got served 3 courses and drinks while we waited. We were given the excuse that this party had overwhelmed the kitchen which doesnt really track, when the rest of the downstairs was basically empty. Its quirky, its fun and the food tasted delicious. . . But its overpriced considering the service and the general manic atmosphere. Wheelchair accessibility: There is none.

Booked a table for six here on Saturday, ordered our food, but only two plates emerged after half an hour. After 15 mins of waiting we asked where the rest of our food was to be told that they had a bigger table upstairs and our food had been given to them. Obviously not terribly impressed by that but told the cost of the four missing meals would be deducted from the bill. Food then turned up. Tucked in and afterwards asked for a sweet but that too failed to arrive, so asked for the bill. Bill arrived with all meals charged so queried that and told that only the wine would be deducted, contradicting what wed been told earlier. So new bill was calculated but that was also wrong, in fact we were given someone elses bill, so off again to re-calculate. Eventually ended up at the right number, paid and left. Its a great venue and the food we had was lovely as were the waitresses. But if you cant deliver an order and even worse you prioritise one order over another then its a no from me, wont be going back and cant recommend.

STREET FOOD MENU ONLY : I am so sorry to say that the Street Food menu is absolutely terrible- I had a Cesar salad, that was a few cobb lettuce leaves, some mayo ( lacked any flavour or resemblance to a Caesar sauce ) and some croutons.. when i asked to add on tofu the anchovies were removed..... all for £13. It was shocking. Our friends chicken wings had nothing to them, and the burger wasnt great. This is sooo surprising seeing as people flock to this venue - and quite rightly so, as the bar, location, atmosphere and staff are great. With such amazing street vendors up the road at Hackney Bridge ( and amazing food in the East barge itself) - i would skip getting any food here, just stay for drinks- for a good vibe then move on to eat . An excellent experience overall! Wont lie, priced higher than most places I have had Sunday roast, but cannot deny the amazing atmosphere. The place has three/four areas to dine. I was below deck and loved the cozy feel! Due to crossed wires I was dining alone, but the staff and overall atmosphere made that an asset rather than an awkward experience. I enjoyed lovely wine and a delicious cocktail, but the highlight of course was the Lamb shank roast. The lamb was excellent! I am disappointed I only received 1, yes I counted, because how could you not, 1 honey carrot - delicious as it was, sadly stood alone. I loved most of my meal (I didnt finish as I have been trying not to eat too much carbs - but that isnt reflective of the deliciousness or amount of food provided which was a fair portion!) Though I must say the true allure and 5 star experience is the staff and overall atmosphere of this establishment!

Hackney Wick! On a barge in east London outside in the glorious sunshine the venue was perfect for a summers evening. The evening started well with our waitress being very nice and attentive drinks came and all was great. However it went a bit wrong when we made our food order... about 5mins later the waitress was back to tell us they didnt have any aubergine left for the vegetarian main or cod collar left for the specials, so reordered a different fish course and then switched the aubergine for cabbage. Back again 10minutes later to say there was no specials left and also the last potato stack had been ordered. This carried on for about 3 trips until finally the food was ordered albeit a severely restricted menu. This unfortunately was a real shame as the food itself was good and if we had just been told at the start that only 2 mains and 3 starters were left then we would have ordered appropriately. I think if you were going for lunch or early dinner this wouldnt have been an issue so tip here is go early and just check they have everything as advertised! Vegetarian options: Aubergine main dish ran out and also one of the veggie starters was not available

Had a bit of a disappointing birthday meal for a friend here. We booked a table and explicitly said we weren t watching the football and got put right next to the loudest speaker in the garden. I ordered a chicken caesar salad which, I kid you not, was half a romaine lettuce (like, not cut up), about half a chopped chicken breast, loads of thick dressing, and probably 2 anchovies. For £14!

Been to Barge East a few times now. Nice atmosphere especially in nice weather. Had the croquettes which were pretty nice but maybe steep at £2 a piece (it costs £8 you get 4). Guess thats just London these days. Drinks are London prices too but service is quick especially if youre on an outside table. Seems like a nice place for a catch up with friends or a first date.

I booked a table during a Euro 2024 game. I specifically chose the option to NOT make the booking for the Euro 2024 which I assumed meant that me and my friends would not be in front of a giant screen... We ended up having the table literally in front of the screen (the best spot by far for Football fans). When I discussed it with members of the staff they said that I should have made it clear when booking online (which I did by choosing the NOT Euro 2024 booking).

I had Sunday lunch at Barge east yesterday, with some friends who are visiting from New Zealand. It was amazing! The food was lovely and very well presented, it was like eating a work of art. We all went for the three course special. We had a different starter each, they were all fantastic. The roasts were cooked to perfection, very crunchy roast potatoes and even the Yorkshire puddings were outstanding. We didnt recognise many of the wines so asked for a robust red. The bar staff had a little debate and sent us up a sample, which was exactly what we wanted. The desserts were fantastic, again very well presented. And they made me a hazelnut espresso martini which was absolutely superb. The service was excellent, the staff were there just when we wanted them. They knew the menu well and were very helpful. Its a great place to eat out, we will definitely be going back. Thanks everyone for a great meal.

Came here with family for my birthday. This gave me everything I wanted and more. The boat is well designed, from the inner decor to the little details like the shipping forecast in the toilet, you get the sense that every detail was checked extensively. Food was phenomenal, it was the best Sunday Roast Ive had in London at least. Highlights for me were the Mackrel special and burnt leak small plate, the combination of the ash oil and tunworth cheese was a delight. Staff were attentive but relaxed enough to be authentic, a fine line that is hard to tow. If there was one negative it was the Limoncello Spritz lacked a bit of character for me. However the Negroni made with Cynar instead of Campari was a superb twist of the classic and more than made up for the Spritz earlier. I will recommend Barge East to all who can make their way over to the area

All staff made us feel looked after. We were there to celebrate a 40th birthday. The wife of the birthday girl had booked a private indoor table on top deck which would have been great, but on such a warm day we asked if we could instead sit out on deck. No problem! We were moved without any fuss. My partner & I chose every non-dairy option on the menu between us and we thoroughly enjoyed every delicious mouthful. Michael, our waiter, was kind, very respectful, and attentive. He even had a unique cocktail made which was not on the menu simply by asking our friend what sorts of flavours she liked because she didn t fancy any of the published options. All the cocktails were as tasty as the food and the service was top notch. The setting was beautiful and it s good to know there are indoor options on deck for when the weather isn t so good. Thank you Barge East. And a special shout out to lovely Michael! Dietary restrictions: The lactose-free options were delicious and truly lactose-free (I didn t swell up after eating). Most of those options were also suitable for vegans.

Terrible fine dining in all ways. The waiter was completely lost. People were having to go to her instead of the opposite, and the restaurant had 3 customers... I ordered 2 small plates, the clam, which clearly came from a jar, but ok, and the Cornish Crab Sando, which had gone bad. I dont know how a restaurant that charges what they charge is still open. Hopefully, I will survive the one bite of the bad Crab.. Its a trap, be aware.

Not impressed in the slightest. Waited 45 minutes for bar food, chicken burgers and chips with no prior indication that the food would take this long. I m more than happy to wait if given prior warning, instead you re sat there thinking your order is lost and required me to get up and check. Chicken burger had barely any chicken in it. Not a full breast but thigh which again is absolutely fine!, but almost non existent in the bun considering the price of £14 for this alone. Both burgers were the same. I notified the staff of the poorly made portion and got a refund on only one of the burgers..however had to wait 15 minutes sat at the bar for this to happen as the staff member that offered to do it ran off and failed to return. I absolutely hate complaining about food like this, but this was ridiculous and unfortunately the terrible refund experience warrants this review. Do it on the spot or don t bother. I understand it was busy but a 15 minute wait in the dark, to be simply refunded half of a poor purchase is unacceptable in my opinion.

Started with delicious cocktails based on local fruits; tasty appetizers and superb main courses all served with flair and humor, accompanied by a nice (non local) Prosecco. Very cosy, quaint establishment - but ambiance was perfect. Definitely on my return list as the menu changes according to availability. And return I did on May 25, 2024 to enjoy another superb meal. Once again close to the kitchen to observe the constant hum of activity and stream of exquisitely cooked and beautifully presented dishes heading out to customers. Cocktails and wine well matched to our chosen meals. This time the whole of Hackney Wick seemed to be out enjoying the lovely summer day, warm temperature and balmy evening. Top notch food, with some exceptionally and inventive dishes. This is a brilliant example of modern British cooking. All of the food, service, and the overall vibe of barge East are great. What sets it apart, however, is the bold new dishes that feature as specials. Last time I visited I had the cod collar, which I had never heard of before. The food was even better this time than last time. My beef roast was THE BEST beef Sunday roast I have ever had. Got to barge east that evening to be told actually our booking was up on the deck. Very good potatoes, good vegetables. Only two small gripes, Id suggest slightly bigger plates, as the generous portions meant the plate was a bit crowded. And, just slightly bigger portions of the tasty gravy. But very much would recommend and willing be looking to bringing others, especially with all that Hackney Wick has to offer.

Very disappointing experience. I have been to Barge East a couple of times before and previous experiences were excellent. We even gave them a 5* review last time. Sadly, the wheels came off on this visit. Admittedly it was 7.30 on a Friday night - no doubt one of their busiest times. We waited 20 minutes for drinks - slow but not a disaster. Starters were ok but we then had to wait an hour before mains arrived - after we have them a reminder that we were still waiting. Unfortunately, the problems continued. The beef was overcooked and tasteless. The rabbit loin was overcooked, cold and inedible. I sent it back uneaten. There was no apology from the staff. They even left the charge for this dish on the bill - which I had to ask to be removed. Sounds like my experience is similar to the review from Ryan Wang. The staff didnt care that we had a poor experience so I wont be going back.

However, the table next to us were offered this when they arrived. Service wasnt great, in spite us being rather early in the evening really struggled to get waiters attention. Sourdough focaccia delicious but £4 for 2 slices of bread and garlic butter is a lot. Cocktails excellent. Mussels good. We were close to leaving without eating our mains, 2) the food was average, small and generally cold - unlike my previous visits, 3) it was massively overpriced. The mains should have been priced as small plates. 140 pounds for a bottle of wine and a small amount of average food. We left very hungry.

Update: March 2024 Just had dinner at the barge and dropping down to 3*, mainly due to a mixup which really spoiled our experience. We both arrived and explained to our waitress that we were vegetarian, at which point it was explained that the only vegetarian main was off the menu but we could have a starter as main instead. That was fine, and we actually elected rather than having a small dish large to just have all of the vegetarian starters and sides together in a tapas style of dinner. The homemade focaccia with wild garlic butter was amazing, as were most of the other small dishes. Only hiccup was we received, by mistake, the roasted leeks with pork crackling, as well as the three cornered leak dish, and only after several mouthfuls that I realised I was eating something not vegetarian. The host was lovely about it and apologised and took it off the bill and remade without the meat but I did feel a bit sick after that as it was the first time I ve ever really eaten meat. Otherwise wine, staff and atmosphere all great. Just really need to improve the vegetarian offering, probably great for non vegetarians but don t think we ll return until they can guarantee vegetarian main (or have more than one vege main in case of issues, come on guys it s not hard) and appreciate that when a client says they re vegetarian please don t serve them meat by mistake. Original review from 2021: We all had an absolutely joyous time on the barge for a birthday party lunch with bottomless Prosecco. The venue, staff, food and drinks were all absolutely exceptional. I would have no concern recommending barge east to friends, colleagues and family for a truly fantastic experience. Vegetarian options: Only one main dish, was unavailable at the time. Had to order sides, served one with meat

Just been to a brilliant Burns Night party here and we had an absolute blast. Everything from the food, to the wonderful staff was fantastic! And what a great atmosphere. Ask about the history of the boat ... its very interesting!

4* only purely because the service was so so slow. The food was 5/5 - absolutely amazing, really imaginative, one of the best roasts I ve had out, sticky toffee pudding out of this world. All of the meats were perfectly cooked, the pork melted in the mouth, beef the perfect medium, lamb just pink. Starters were mainly fishy or veggie which suited us and balanced out the meaty main. There was just one option for veggie roast which was an onion tart so there s better places for veggies but if not then I d highly recommend. We were sat right opposite the pass and the chef was really calm despite how busy it was, excellent team! Great choice of beers. Such a nice atmosphere downstairs on the boat. We booked via firsttable on a Sunday arvo so it was very reasonable. But I m not quite sure why they re on firsttable because they were so so busy! We had 3 courses and it took around 2.5 hours, which considering the dessert was very quick seemed a longgg time. Really recommend but if we were paying full whack I would ve been a bit miffed at the service!

Lovely food and very friendly welcome. Long waits for food but they were very busy and smiling. Vapers sneaking puffs not pleasent and not stopped. Wine excellent.

Fantastic and unusual setting down on the Lea Canal; friendly staff and wonderful food, with great combinations of flavours. This was our second visit and it feels like a really reliable venue. We took friends from Hungary and they were completely wowed by it. Many thanks

We had dinner inside the boat and it was exceptional! Not the largest plates but really tasty from nose to tail. Nice ambience, music is at sensible volume. Recommend.

Ive been here twice with friends and family for the Sunday roast deal and left super happy both times., The starters and desserts selection is even better than the roast itself in my opinion. Good selection of wines reasonably priced, friendly staff and relaxed, not rushed atmosphere. The place is so unique , a must try

Very nice place to stop for a snack while we were hiking the canal path. We had the croquette and oysters and both were tasty. I could have eaten more!

Great little spot. Just highly priced drinks, but just like everywhere around there. So if you cant beat the prices its a good spot for pre match drinks.

Burns night at Barge East. For sure we will be booking for next year! Great food and atmosphere. Audience volunteers for the reading of Burns really livened up the place.

Last Sunday, we went to see ABBA Voyage and Barge East was suggested to be a good place to have lunch prior to the show. Great experience! We sat in the captains cabin. Food was excellent and service was first class. Thank you to one of their team members, Aled, who looked after us very well indeed !
