French fusion food with oriental flair Since 1981 (BYOB)
We went for dinner last night and had a wonderful time. The dining room was nice and elegant with little touches of real flowers and a rose folded napkin! Our server was nice and gave us great suggestions. I ordered the cream of mushroom soup and the shrimp and scallops and everything was absolutely fresh and delicious. Really flavorful and special. We will absolutely be coming back!
Update for clarification: Bunha Faun is under new ownership. My review is for a March, 2023 visit when the restaurant was owned and operated by head chef “Nai”. My girlfriend and I went to Bunha Faun earlier this year (early March, 2023) when the restaurant’s head chef “Nai” owned the restaurant. I have since heard that the restaurant is under new ownership and there is a new head chef and menu. During our visit the staff was very attentive and friendly and the food was cooked to perfection. We were with a group, so we ordered a variety of dishes and shared all of them. Everything we tried (seven or eight different dishes) were all delicious! I can't remember everything we had, but we definitely tried rack of lamb, green angel hair pasta, black angel hair pasta, escargot, curry chicken, black lobster ravioli, sauteed oysters with vermouth cream. From what we were told before dining there, Nai’s sauces are known for being amazing and he did not disappoint. All of the dishes were incredible. I look forward to visiting again now that the restaurant is under new management and I hope that Nai’s legacy of delicious food is continued under the new owner.
The food was well prepared and served, tasty and flavorful with good, fresh ingredients and a good selection of menu options. The standard veggies were a little boring though, and the place itself was quite small. Could use a few less tables to spread things out a bit. Great friendly staff.
Nice presentation, yummy food and calm atmosphere. Everything was clean and orderly. Server was kind and attentive. Very pleased with my dinner there!
Absolutely awesome place!! Every dish was very tasty and fairly priced. The lamb is definitely the best lamb I’ve had in the U.S., and the black pasta is so good! The use of alcohol and herbs in food is my favorite.
Delicious food! We enjoyed everything we ordered. Especially the veal and escargot. We will definitely be back!
A wonderful locally owned restaurant with amusing food. We loved their cream of mushroom soup and the chef made that for us even though it was not on the daily special menu. The veal chop was served with the bone in and the sauce was amusing. The sauteed shrimp and scallops was cooked to perfection and served with a nice creamy buttery wine sauce. All the other dishes were wonderful and the portion size is perfect. Our server was pleasant and attentive, and all our orders were presented timely. The building and decor is relatively plain and that's probably why it is the best kept secret in the area. Great value for excellent food and service, something you can't find anywhere in the Philly suburbs. 1/13/2021: Back again after Covid-19 reopening and it's as excellent as before; consistent in food quality and service. 👍👍👍 6/10/2022: Back to try different things on the menu , however, we wished they would've added something new or changed up the "Special".
Wonderful BYOB. My wife and I go all the time and are never disappointed. The food is delicious. A bit upscale and nothing fancy to look at but did I mention the food is delicious? Service has always been top notch too. Give it a try. The specials are amazing. Actually, everything we've had has been fantastic.
We just celebrated the 60th birthday for my twin sisters at Bunha Faun. We had a party of 12. The food and service were amazing. Thanks Bunha Faun!
From the outside its fair, but inside its a lovely place to dine.
THE DAY I WENT TO DINNER AND WAS TOLD OUR TABLE (AND PERHAPS OTHERS) were test subjects! Bad start under new owners! I went there for the first time in a long Time for my wife s birthday with friends. In the past it was always difficult to get a last minute reservation. I learned that it had recently been reopened, after being closed for a while and was under new ownership. Apparently they had the same chef which reassuring. The restaurant was far from full so expected kitchen wasn t overwhelmed and food would come out in a fairly timely manner. 90 minutes later our main courses arrived. AT about 45 minutes I started asking how our meal was coming along, Every time I asked my waitress, she said it was coming. At about 1 hour I finally got the real scoop! Apparently the chef was teaching the new owner how to prepare the various dishes on the menu. The food overall was good, veal chop, Rack of lamb, filet and duck. The sides were puny and the string beans weren t the best quality for a French restaurant. When I complained to my waitress about the inexcusable wait, indicating we were very displeased and asked her to tell the owner in training, I assumed he would come out to at least apologize, he never showed! I got a Joe Biden . Waitress should have taken initiative and let us know what the delay was. As far as atmosphere, the last time we ate there it was noisy. This time it was quiet and they added table cloths. Ehhh Better get it together or this restaurant will close again very soon! Bill for 4 was 200 plus tip. Not sure if I will give them a second chance!
We are so happy Bunha Faun is back! Our friends and we were so excited to go back after their brief closure. Shrimp and Scallops with Champagne Sauce were delicious and done to Perfection. Filet Wrapped in Bacon was both tender and succulent. Our Sauteed Oysters were amazingly great as usual! We love this place aside from the impeccable food, the wait staff is always gracious and never rushes you through your meal! I also love eating by Candlelight! Welcome Back Bunha Faun..we missed you and cant wait to return!!!
The atmosphere here was very cozy and the food was wonderful. I started with the cream of mushroom soup. This was one of the best i have ever eaten. Followed by a snow pea salad and finished with my entree of roasted duck served with green beans and scalloped potatoes. No room for dessert! Would definitely go back!
Quiet BYOB that is very good. Classic French with an asian touch. We love the French onion soup Cream of mushroom soup Barrimundi Crispy duck Snow pea salad with sesame dressing. Others dishes are good too. Fairly reasonable priced, just recently went up but what places havent raised their prices?
THIS IS THE BEST HIDDEN SECRET IN CHESTER COUNTY. WE HAVE NEVER HAD A BAD MEAL YET. THE FOOD AND SERVICE IS 5 STAR.
Great birthday dinner at Bunha Faun. Sauces are his speciality and they were excellent. Appetizers and meal was delicious! Parking: Parking lot
Had a fantastic experience my first time at this place. Great service, excellent food. The fillet was done perfectly.
great menu. love the varied ingredients. nice to eat food that is much better than my decent cooking.
Despite a rather odd looking exterior, the interior of the restaurant is warm and inviting, with white table cloths, contrasting napkins, and candles on each table. Service was excellent and the food amazing!
Excellence service, Very good taste for a special dinner.. Thank you
While this has been a favorite of ours, the most recent two visits were disappointing. The noise level made it impossible to hear others at your table and an hour and a half wait for dinner was unacceptable.
Food is the best server is nice
Such a disappointment! This place is a geriatric hotspot - if you re under 70 you will be in the minority. We felt very uncomfortable being the only young people dining in this place. Worst of all, the food is AWFUL despite having a menu with prices that reflect fine dining. Literally left to go pick up Wawa hoagies on the way home. Avoid at all costs!!!
Duck was really, really dry. One waiter for a full house. Too noisy to talk at a table of 6. Just not a good experience, though they were trying.
Wonderful little find! Good food, not too expensive, BYOB
I have eaten here for many years and enjoyed it. My last experience (and it will be the last) was awful. The service was abominable. 2.5 hours to get a bowl of soup and entree. Inexcusable. The staff were overwhelmed and inexperienced. Sat over an empty soup bowl for almost 30 minutes before entree arrived. My table ordered a decaf and a regular coffee. Decaf delivered. Coffee given to different table. Asked 5 times for a bread basket. Check came. When I went to pay it was for a different amount. I hope this was a glitch but I do not want to experience that again.
I m responding to your response to Lynn Leis review. The response is malicious and inaccurate. As for your comment about being bullish and rude and it having happened before, this is completely untrue. We were both annoyed by the lack of service and by the fact that we were largely ignored. Lynn was on time (early) but I was unavoidably late. The policy about bread was not explained to her, so she kept reminding the server. The soup came out, and it always takes a long time to eat it because it is hot and so what? I ve ordered the soup many times and the server has had no problem serving the entrees. I cancel the salad because it was just too late - I like to eat it before my meal. Again, this has never been a problem before. I ordered the takeout when I ordered my meal - I ordered 2 entree-sized green pasta to go and 1 appetizer size for me at the table. When the takeout was delivered, there was only 1 container so I assumed the other one had been unintentionally omitted. Turns out they gave me 2 appetizer portion and put them in one box - how was I to know this? At no time were we rude to the servers- just extremely frustrated. We were there from 6:20 (Lynn)/6:45 (me) and couldn t leave until after 9:00pm. I was charged for the 3 appetizer size meals given ($11 x 3) but it should have been 1 appetizer and 2 entrees ($22 each). However Lynn law $22 on her bill at the table, then it was additional at the register - $8.00 for her soup, taxes - she just inquired about the discrepancy, she didn t think the entree would be charged the same as the appetizer side - that is ridiculous. You have blamed the victims here. Very, very bad way to treat loyal customers who have recommended you to many people over the years. Shame
Great food and service. Wish I lived closer. Would be there frequently
I ate here back in March. The black angel hair with crab and the shrimp and scallops were amazing. I saw a facebook post from the previous owners daughter saying the restaurant has since change hands. Im happy to have been able to try it before that happened.
Was better under the old management
I had a wonderful experience in March 2023. We ate a lot of items on the menu. Black and Green Angle Hair Pasta, Veal Chop, Chicken Curry, and Rainbow Trout. Heard it was under new management. Hopefully, they can keep the dining experience the same.
While well hidden this place is an absolute gem. Everything we ordered from the escargot to the lamb shank was absolutely delicious. Compared to other restaurants in the area the price points were quite pleasing as well!
This is a great restaurant! Great service, great menu, nice atmosphere, and the food was delicious. We had a wonderful evening!
We enjoyed a great dinner this evening. The dishes, especially the rack of lamb and the filet mignon were cooked just right. The server, Beau, smart and pleasant, delivered an impeccable service. As our group of 6 wanted to share dishes, we had a number of extra requests and she accommodated all of them promptly. It was amazing to watch her meeting the needs of the other guests also seamlessly. Such professionalism and efficiency is so seldom seen nowadays. Bunha Faun is surely a hidden gem in Malvern and will remain my favorite restaurant.
The food was exceptional. Its not the place to go if you are in a hurry. One person, effectively, handles the entire dining room. The pace is part of the ambience.
My favorite restaurant. Food is always delicious.
Never want to share info about this place. If it gets too popular, Ill never get a table! The outside is very unassuming. Dont be fooled, the food is fantastic, and the serving sizes larger than youd expect for a French fusion restaurant.
Excellent menu.. Very honest in their billing. I had overpaid. They made sure I was charged the lower (proper)amount on my Visa card.
Great dinner!
Ive been going to this place for many years and have never been disappointed. At one point I realized that I was comparing every new restaurant to Bunha Faun, and they all came up short. Thats when I knew that this is my favorite place!
Excellent quality food.. great experience!
Delicious dishes
One of the best restaurants that we ve eaten at in a while. (We eat out at least three times a week). BYOB is a plus. Service was excellent.
The most delicious french food Ive had since Paris
Great restaurant with diverse menu, strong choices in every section. Pork, beef seafood, fish, pasta, all prepared perfectly. Service very amiable and prompt. Definitely 5 star eating. BYOB.
Excellent
Delicious food! Will definitely be visiting again soon.
Good mushroom soup....scallops and shrimp good too
I had the Snap Pea Salad and Rainbow Trout and it was excellent
Admittedly it does lack in decor...but the food more than makes up for it! Always feels like the best kept secret in town. Service is incredibly friendly - you will have a wonderful culinary experience, consistently. No one does a better duck. Crispy skin, tender meat..
The food was exceptional! Had the mushroom soup and shrimp and scallops. Best I ever had. There were 10 of us and everyone raved about their choice of entree. Will definitely return.
Food is always fantastic. I have been here many times and have never had a bad meal or service. Always on point
The Tofu Curry was off the charts!!! The flavors in the curry are incredible. Every sauce the Chef makes is on another level. And the mushroom soup, Faungetaboutit!! His daughter, Nissa, treated us like family. She also has awesome skills as a mask maker. Cant wait to go back!!!
Always great food. BYO is an added attraction
Food was delicious, price point was good. Staff was very friendly and the restaurant looked clean. Will eat here again.
Excellent food.
This is my favorite restaurant in the area. The two pasta appetizers and the escargot app are all excellent. On any dish, the sauces really stand out. Such great execution. The menu really hasnt changed much in many years, but there is enough variety that you can alter your order upon each visit, and everything is so well prepared, that you will always discover a new pleasure. Its BYOB. Its French-Asian fusion. Its great.
Pretty outdated
Why do I love it? Idk, PROBABLY CAUSE THE FOOD IS TOP NOTCH. Like honestly, the food goes above and beyond amazing. Its on a whole other scale of amazing. Thats why u love it. Keep giving 200% quality, and that place will always shine brighter than any other fancy restaurant
Delish French food with Asian flair. Lovely ambience quiet , excellent service. Like U have a private chef. Compliments to the Chef
Very good food. The fish was great. I highly recommend the black linguine and the white chocolate truffle
Always an excellent meal. The Escargot is the best around. Ive enjoyed every thing Ive tried there. It is BYOB so that is a bonus!
Great food! Excellent service. A safe place to try new food and love it!
In a word superb in every way. The escargot appetizer is a must.
Always very very good.
It was our first time there. We didnt know about it. Everything was delicious!!! Great service. Our waiter Greg was awesome.
Small menu which means that they do each dish perfectly. Im not sure why they claim to be French-Asian but it doesnt matter the food is excellent and service faultless.
Fantastic food and BYOB
One of our favorite restaurants..
Excellent food in a cozy relaxed decor!
Amazing, simply amazing ... not what you would expect from the outside or even after being seated. Service was great and food was 5 stars! Our party had the oyster special, Asian noodles, mushroom soup, and green/pesto pasta for appetizer. For dinner we had the steak, baramundi special, rainbow trout special, thai chicken, salmon, shrimp and scallops and everyone was so impressed that we were trying each others dishes. First time but not the last.
We just had dinner at your restaurant -it was wonderful food but so hot in your restaurant. We were told that you could not order certain deserts due to problem with freezer -you were having a total air conditioning issue -it was 85 in your restaurant. We made a reservation-had dinner but you should have offered a free desert or discount on our meal for your malfunctions to your air conditioning-not sure we will return.
The food was great. Not the classiest establishment but dont let that put you off. Genuinely delicious fresh food cooked with care and attention. Ill be back next time Im in the area.
Last night we had 12 in our party. Food was excellent and server Dominique never made a mistake on food to each or the bill. She is a real keeper. Rest rooms could be cleaner and some update to dining room. The tables did look nice with flowers and tablecloths. Will return, a favorite of ours.
Whether you got hooked back in the day at Nais Cuisine in Havertown, or first tried his food at Bunha Faun in Malvern, youll never grow wary of Chef Nais meticulously prepared dishes! If his sauces were sold in store shelves, I would drink them straight from the bottle.
They are not as they once were... They used to be phenomenal...
My wife and I have been several times and it is a hidden gem. The food is always very good and the service as well.
Amazing BYOB! Dont let the unassuming exterior fool you, this unique French-Asian fusion hidden gem is one of the best spots on the Main Line
I have been coming to this place for well over 15 years. The location May not look like anything from the outside but I have to say once you are seated the staff is very welcoming. The food is extremely consistent and I am always happy to return. Its a place that I love to come before I go to Peoples Light and Theater. Theyre always eager to serve me good food and get me to the show on time. Thank you for more than a decade of excellence.
Great boy. Very good food. Great place for a romantic dinner.
Very good food. A little expensive. Limited menu but very tasty
You would never guess how good the food is from driving by. Byob
Great experience with friends!!!
Unusual French Asian hybrid, the food was good, created with display in mind as is typical of french style cooking so dont expect huge portions. The menu is limited and doesnt vary but that can be good as the chef sticks to what he does best. They dont serve alcohol but encourage you to bring your own. Best bets are the oyster appetizers and Filet mignon. Price is reasonable for the cuisine.
A place where friends can meet and have a wonderful dinner
Linine table cloths superb portabella mushroom soup tender shrimp abd scallops
Great food and excellent service
Never, ever been disappointed by a meal here. Their sauces are incredible. You hear stories from days past of French cooking influence in Indochina. This is here now in our own back yard!
Absolutely wonderful food presented fabulously!!!!
OK food. Dated environment.
Excellent flavors in every course. This is a BYOB.
Never dissapointed in the food. Had the veal chop which was fantastic. Escargo for an appetizer were also terrific.
Took the guys like 2 hours to make my food which was 4 pieces of ravioli...the food was good but what are they doing back there that requires ravioli to cook for two hours? Are they growing the grain or something??
Always impressed!
Great food and service
My family as well as several friends have been to Bunha Faun many times and have always had wonderful food and great service
Located in what used to be a Dairy Queen, Bunha Faun feels like a relic of the past. The food is good - I really enjoyed my scallop dish, but my husband was unimpressed with his beef croquet (I beleive his words were, Kebab Cafe is better.). The service is impeccable, but I couldnt get past the building itself. It wasnt that the building clearly used to be something (very specifically) else, but rather that the decor was as old and shabby as the building itself. There were water stains on the ceiling, discolored paint in the bathroom, and an overall feeling of being in someones grandparents living room that hasnt been updated since the 80s. I realize this may sound overly critical, but it was truly conspicuous, and especially for what we were paying for our meal, a serious distraction at best. I really wanted to love Bunha Faun (and the wonderful service and BYO policy definitely bumped it my rating up a star), but just couldnt get past the weirdly dated and fading ambiance.
Ok, we came here on a whim and were pleasantly surprised. Even though the outside is inconspicuous, the food was done perfectly and service was top notch. Fish cooked to perfection, and tofu curry was made to order in terms of spiciness. Dont miss the dessert! We will be back!
Really dont understand the high reviews for this place. Food was pricey and very mediocre. The decor and atmosphere looked like it hasnt been updated since the 70s. Pretty packed every weekend though, so somebody must like it.
Been going here for decades. Sure, its setting and decor are dated. But it is by far the best white napkin dining value out there. Food is always delicious, and sometimes superlative, even if the menu may be limited. Bring an excellent bottle of wine, and you get a 3-star dining experience for pennies on the dollar.
meal for 2, with appetizers. great fish, nice flair. real candle-light. easy parking. one of those aha-surprise places to return to again and again.
always reliable for good food & service. byob
