Comfortable restaurant with great service and fantastic food. Their soup dumplings are delicious and juicy. Protein with sweet and sour sauce is my guilty pleasure and their variant with fish was the best sweet and sour dish I've ever had. Would highly recommend a visit.
Clean and beautiful restaurant. Nice and cozy Chinese decor. The food is delicious and well presented. Good pricing set. Service is excellent and the staffs are very friendly.
Delicious foods and the servers were nice and friendly. We have a wonderful night here.
Authentic Shanghai food, really nice this time. I have to say last visit few months ago I was a bit disappointed but this time it's perfect.
My family and I have come here since they opened year ago. They have downsized the restaurant. But the food is still very good. If you like “ Ding Tai Fung “ type of cuisine, then this is the place for you. The food and flavours here are just as good as DTF across the way here. Happy Eats everyone 😎
Went here for dinner and we loved it! We had been to this spot many years ago for a family birthday but not recently (as there are just so many endless restaurants to try) and are glad we returned. The service was quick and friendly and the food was delicious and well priced. We ordered the pork and crab soup dumplings which were savoury and warming. The scallion pancakes were crusty yet doughy and perfectly balanced. The braised pork was fatty and sumptuous. We look forward to returning soon and trying more!
Not a great experience at the establishment. And it takes a lot for me to give a low star review. Staff not welcoming at all when first entering. They doing you a favour for seating you. We reserved a table at 6pm Saturday evening for 4. First time coming to this Shanghai restaurant. Food 5.5/10. Not authentic, dishes tasted bland and not the right type of ingredients for some of the dishes. Quantity similar to other Shanghai restaurant even compared to many restaurants I’ve dined at in Shanghai (having lived and worked there). We were seated at 6pm. Ordered around 6:15pm. Food started to come around 6:25pm. Quick service. Then a waitress comes over at 6:30pm and tells us they need the table at 7pm and if we would be finished by then. A bit rude considering we had made a reservation to enjoy a meal but now feeling rushed to finish fast. I could’ve done that at home if I wanted to eat quickly. Anyways we finished and left and don’t think will ever return.
Good quality chinese food. I had the dinner combo for 2 for $50, which came with a soup, dumplings, 2 dishes and dessert. Food quality exceeded my expectations. Restaurant decor is also slightly upscale. They are busy on weekends, but easy to get a table on weekdays. I will return.
Delicious food ~ Friendly service !
I won t recommend, not worth it and 12% automatic gratuity! Very average Shanghainese food, don t order it as a set meal! Portions are small and not tasty! Chicken Wonton Soup = very light MSG soup
This restaurant was overall mediocre with small servings. The part that annoyed me the most was the 12% required tip or in other words Service fee. I hopefuly dont need to explain how ridiculous this is. At least tell us this fee exists before we order.
It s expensive and tastes bad. It s not Shanghai food at all.
I just came here today. The food is okay. The Atmosphere is beautiful and clean. But need to improve customers service Food
Good Shanghainese fare. Reasonably priced snd efficient fast service. Ambience typical HK style diner, clean and functional
Food is good, but way too salty. Too much heavy sauce on both of our dishes. Even the sweet and sour soup is salty.
Worst ever service. Server behaved like you owe them money or something. Mandatory tip after dining. Avoid this place if you can.
Ordered their 2 person meal.... The dumpling meat was loose. The spicy fish is battered.... Egg white was so so... The hot and sour soup was ok... The dessert..... Omg.... Watch the video.....
good food
This is one of the more authentic shanghaiese food in GTA. The food is fantastic and the price is reasonable. We love the Lion Head meatball and their tofu and veggie dish. Kid-friendliness: Kids friendly, our two kids love the fried rice and meatball.
I love this restaurant and its authentic cuisine. I have come here for years, and brought family & many friends here. My guests had always greatly enjoyed their meals. The service has always been very courteous & good in my experience. Their steamed soup dumplings, pan fried pork dumplings, mu shu pork, and hot & sour soup are just a few excellent dishes. A few of their dishes are also available in some dim sum restaurants, but are never as good & tasty as the ones here. The menu is extensive with many great dinner dishes. In fact, I just received news from friends from Paris. They will be visiting this September. They had asked me to book for lunch at A La Kitchen again.
Food is fair and pretty noise environment
Authentic cuisine from Shanghai.
Although this restaurant opened for a long time, today was the first time we came, yummy food. Will always come back for Shanghai food. But it is a bit noisy during peak hours.
The restaurant moved here and became smaller, but the decoration is pretty good The portion size of the meal is smaller and the price is slightly higher There are relatively few small tables. If there are guests waiting for a table during holidays, the service staff will politely rush to the table.
Kid-friendliness: Brought kids
Meal for four includes 4 xiaolongbao, Shanghai thick stir-fry, hot and sour soup, three side dishes (Dongpo pork, Sai crab, lion head), red bean paste; plus 4 xiaolongbao, dandan noodles, Shanghainese meat ! Dongpo pork is not too fatty and is delicious! The lions head is good, and the thick fried noodles are a bit lin! Overall good!
It s really unpalatable, the picture was taken with the original camera
I don t know if the relationship with Shanghainese food is just the name It s really hard to eat
A very Chinese restaurant serving very good Shanghaiese food. Shao lung bao, the dumplings and other dishes were delicious, the whole family including the children, they finished every bite.
The service attitude was extremely poor. I DIYed everything I needed. After I tipped, I still felt it was too little and asked for more.
Average. Not impressed.
Solid place for some tasty Shanghai food! Steamed Pork Dumplings (xiaolongbao): - large balls of pork filling, but the meat texture was a little coarse - juicy with a nice thin skin Salty Pork & Tofu in Soup: - many chunks of pork belly that had balanced fatty and lean parts - delicious and perfectly salty - it was missing bamboo shoots, which is listed in its description Braised Pork with Veg (Dong Po Rou): - well-balanced flavour with succulent fat caps - came with four mini mantou which I wish were larger Braised Sherd Eel - sauce was so umami and thick, best paired with white rice - eel was very different than Japanese unagi in comparison, it was quite firm and dense - not much eel flavour in itself, the sauce does most of the heavy lifting Overall a nice place for Shanghai cuisine, and is comparable or better than the more well-known Din Tai Fung across the street. Our dinner came out to about $27.5 per person, which is reasonable for a sumptuous meal.
The restaurant was quite busy when we went there. However, we were able to get our food in a timely manner. The server was kind enough to go through the menu and provide different options. The food was a delight and is highly recommended.
It is a Shanghai restaurant with reasonable prices and good quality, and is very popular among the neighbors.
The lunch special was surprisingly good. It is worth trying.
We went here on Thursday night for dinner and while the food was decent, the service was terrible. The two waitresses there were not welcoming and kept placing the food in the corner and sides of the table, out of our reach. This was not a good experience and I would not recommend this place to anyone or come back here anymore myself.
Food is good but service no good
Excellent food & good service.
Came here hoping to get some delicious Shanghai food....... what I got was discounted grocery chinese food. Everything is super oilly, portion size are extremely small, and the taste is nothing like before. Most likely will close down in a few weeks. So sorry.
Brought two Brazilian friends, and they really like the dishes. As an authentic Shanghainese, I would say, generally the dishes are of high quality and taste, especially like the the Chicken soup Wonton, steamed pork dumplings, sweet and sour pork, Mu Shu chicken with wrap, and fried rice cake. I will rate them 5 star. But for Braised bean curd with crab meat and Shanghai crispy smoked fish I will give 3.5 star, as it uses sea crab meat without crab roe, and uses sea fish for smoked fish. Understood that there are some limitations for acquiring authentic ingredients to be perfect. After all, it s a great tasty experience, would recommend
We had not been to A La Kitchen for a long time and were very disappointed with the horrible service after returning after over 3+ years. This place is nothing like it was before. The service and food quality are completely not in line with its prices. As well menu selections are very limited. Never going back again.
Price is not bad, but the noodle soup arent authentic Shanghai dishes as usually they are angel hair like style, the fried pao is also Cantonese style as well.
Small portions and expensive. Quality of food is poor
Busy place, food are good but a bit cold, price and service are ok.
Come here if you want to be the wronged
Food has gone downhill a bit perhaps. Their dumplings are still decent (siu long bao and potstickers) but the rest was okay.
Would give zero star if I had the chance. Ordered the which is the spicy and sour soup. In traditional Shanghai style cooking, it s supposed to be sweet, sour, and spicy. How do I know? I m from Shanghai. However, that was not the case. The soup was fully sour with little spiciness to it. When I approached the waitress nicely for a small plate of sugar for my girlfriend and I to add in our soup ourselves, the waitress gave me a side-eye and proceeded to talk behind my back to her colleagues about how we needed the sugar in Cantonese, assuming my girlfriend and I wouldn t understand. So yeah, didn t have a great experience here, but if you really wanted to come visit and eat, do it at your own discretion. Thanks for reading my review and have a great day.
I highly recommend the xiaolongbao with crabs, and the set meal for four is also a good choice! !
The food and environment are very good, will come again!
Local restaurant serving authentic Shanghai (Northern China) foods.
Food was ok, used to be better.
This place used to be so nice with More food choices, good service and reasonable prices. Now the place is a lot smaller. The service was not good at all when I visited today. The quantity was 2/3 of what it used to be and the prices have gone up for every dish I ordered. I will not go back. Very disappointed. Parking: Many parking spaces are available
Dim sum
So much better than ding tai fung and it taste so good
Hong Kong style Shanghai food (not as bold flavor as authentic Shanghai cuisine). Chef always delivering on consistent quality. Wait staff are direct and efficient. I recommend patrons order the 2 persons or 4 persons set menu as their base meal set as it provides great value and you get to try a variety of items. Then add additional dishes as necessary. You get a soup (hot and sour or fish with vegetable), Xiao Lung Bao or dumplings some main entrees. Everything is made in house, freshly cooked to order. The food items I recommend are Xiao Lung Bao, fish with vegetable soup, pork and vegetable wontons, fried egg with broccoli, noodles with minced pork and bean sauce. Their red bean soup dessert tastes great as well as its served hot and the red beans seem to be all blended into the soup. Parking: Maybe difficult to find parking in the winter or during peak lunch and dinner service period. Many parking spots are reserved for each retail unit.
This restaurant used to be really good, but a recent visit said otherwise. It got kinda busy around 8pm for dinner, but service was still alright. The portions definitely got way smaller and the food wasnt as good as before. I still like the house special rice cake though.
Typical shanghai style food. The food is good but the plate is small. Manual is short.
I feel more comfortable and have a wider space than before. The food is delicious, but the sauces used in the food you ordered may be similar, so the taste is also the same. I ordered Babao Duck. The soy sauce was too thick and dark. I couldn t taste the duck meat. I only knew that there was glutinous rice. I couldn t taste the Babao ingredients.
This restaurant used to be way better in food quality and price. It feels like after renovation, everything has changed. We ordered the 4 person combo + steam dumplings x2 + sticky rice x2. Food are not as tasty as before, I was somewhat disappointed in their steam dumplings. My kids love steam dumplings usually, but after having 2, they stop eating it. Sticky rice; we ordered a sweet and salty one. The sticky rice rolls are made by the waitress. The rice itself is not soft and it gone hard very quickly. Which means the rice might have been microwaved or too little water when cooking it. Their deco is pretty good compared to before. I have a feeling their have changed management/owner. Hopefully, one day I can find a good Shanghai restaurant in Markham. Parking: Same plaza as ikon sushi... during peak hours hard to find a parking spot.
I normally have the shanghai fried noodles and a chicken cold noodles in peanut sauce. They both taste good with large portions. Price is what can be expected nowadays
I understand that inflation is in place and everywhere has went up in price but WEW this place definitely inflated more than other places! 4 regular xiaolongbao were like $8.50? What place serves only 4 xlb? And for over $2 a bao?? Anyway, we got the pan fried buns. Its 4 per order but at least its much bigger than the xlb. Its pretty great! Not too many chives/onions, and its quite filling. I like the simplistic taste. The bun was not burned at all, and not soggy. Service was ok... Our server misunderstood our order. She didnt verbally clarify our xlb order so it never came. Anyway, its fine because we were full from the pork chop noodles. Noodles were amazing. I loved the taste! The pork chop has a hint of curry in the batter. The meat was fresh and the pork chop tasted great! Its definitely a higher price point. For our 2 noodles and 2 own pan fried buns, it was $49 without tip. Id come again but only if Im not super starving.
Great food and not very grease.
The Xiaolong soup dumplings are comparable to Din Tai Fung, and the various cold dishes on the large platter are very delicious, especially the mixed pork and drunken chicken. The scallion pancake is also a must-try! My favorite dish is crab racing...so amazing
My family recently had the unfortunate experience of dining at A La Kitchen, and it was far from a pleasant one. Service was bad right from the start and left a very bitter taste. When we sat down, we were given tea (which was fine), but the waitress quickly turned around and left without time for us to ask for water instead (can overlook that). We then proceeded to order the food and in addition asked politely for her to swap the tea (untouched) with a hot water instead. As she went to put the order in, she thought we could not hear (but we did), and we overheard her speaking to a colleague about our preference for hot water, mocking us behind our back. She literally said why didn t she tell me she wanted hot water earlier in a very condescending tone. We obviously could hear her and to make things worse, she started glaring at us and made us feel super uncomfortable. In fact, as mentioned before, she initially left the tea on the table quickly and we barely had a second to ask her for hot water instead. But even then, if we wanted to add or swap to a hot water, there was no reason for her to be unprofessional and rude like that. We were made to feel like we were doing her a favour for dining there. All in all, the food was alright but the dining experience was far from enjoyable - complete lack of hospitality. The waitress had a terrible attitude, was rude and condescending, and made us feel so uncomfortable for requesting something so simple. Unfortunately the owner of the restaurant was not there that day or else we would have relayed our experiences to her right away. We have been regular customers for years now but unfortunately don t plan on dining again here at least for the next while.
Environment is rowdy in the worst way, servers have no patience or basic courtesy, plenty of excellent Shanghai restaurants in Markham including DTF in FMP nearby, avoid this place
Great shanghai dishes
I hadn t been to A La Kitchen in a while, but was really craving some steamed dumplings and Shanghai fried noodles. I have a few go to places but I decided to order from A La this time and it didn t disappoint! Also grabbed the pan fried dumplings and there was pretty much no leftovers. I haven t dined-in for a while so I can t speak to that right now but the food was yummy!
A little on the expensive side, but food is good. Quality is similar to the nearby ding tai fung, but this one has smaller menu
Down sized & food not too many selection
We had the brunch. The appetizer fish and tofu were just leftovers, the owner just microwaved it. The fried dough are also leftovers too and fried again, absorbing too much oil inside. Anyway, early lunch costs $70 dollops but most were the leftovers, not freshly made. Very disappointed!!
Food was mid, noodle soup was completely bland. Server talked to me like I was an idiot for not being fluent in Cantonese when I asked for the wifi in English. The renovated interiors are really nice, but not worth the rest of the experience here.
It s been on my list to try for years and I was finally here yesterday. Sosoooo disappointed! All the food we ordered had no taste, the Shanghai noodle was too oily with low quality of meat, the dumplings were under my expectation, and the drunken chicken tasted over drunk, LOL.. will not comeback again. Sorry.
Dim Sum not in good shape and also please dont mention their service.
Food very very salty ,price was expensive and dishes was little . waiting for so long . Won t go back !!
The restaurant is not big, and I eat a lot of southern food, so I don t think there is much problem with the cooking. But after all, because the place is small and the tables need to be changed, the waiter will come to take the plates we haven t finished yet, so we have to take the initiative to say that we are still eating. Makes people feel bad.
Food was not cheap and small. The service is not great either. I will not come again.
My family and I decided to take a few guests who are visiting out of town to dinner at this establishment and it was terrible experience. The staff was rude and full of attitude. We have someone in the family that does not speak Cantonese. We told the waitress that this individual does not speak Cantonese and apologized as she did not receive a response. She turned around and told the rest of the staff in Cantonese that the person is ( translated to ) a barbarian who is of Asian decent but doesn t speak the language. This has soured the entire dinner experience for the evening. The food was not bad and we would give it a 7.5/10. We will not be returning to this location. I would encourage your staff to smile a little more and work on your mannerisms. Your job as a server is to serve your guests. If that is too much to ask for then don t expect any gratuity at the end of the meal.
Too pricey while the food is nothing special , wouldn t recommend. People spend an average $50 for mediocre Chinese food.
The waitress said the cold air blowing from the vent overhead wont kill us, but it will make us sick
Ive been going to this restaurant with my family for more than 8 years. Unfortunately, we are all so familiar with the restaurant I didnt even bother to take photos as it is a trusted favourite, go-to place for hearty, flavourful, consistent and reasonably priced Shanghainese food. Favourites: (1) Hot and sour soup - Ive eaten this soup in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal in Canada; in LA, San Francisco, NYC and Boston in the US; and in Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong and even Shanghai around the world. There is no restaurant that even comes close to the make of their soup here. The taste is just so harmonious with plenty of ingredients. Such a comforting dish on a cold day, after a stressful event, for a celebration etc. (2) Soup filled dumplings - the soup inside is genuinely flavourful and much less oilier than most other restaurants that make this dish. Always ordered whenever we come. Only feedback is for $6-7 there should be 6 dumplings instead of 4 - its a bit pricey relative to what other similar restaurants offer, and for the portion the restaurant delivers. (3) Red bean paste fried cake - so good and so hearty. Fantastic way to finish the meal. Again, there has not been a single time we ordered this where we were unhappy. The staff are real friendly and professional. Unlike many Chinese restaurants where you feel like youre invisible, or they dont care for your business, at A La Kitchen they actually know to say hello and thank you, and provide diligent service at just the right amount. Ive also liked their centre piece as part of the restaurant decor, which consist of upside down hung wooden crates that they put soup dumplings in - innovative and very fitting with the type of restaurant! Overall, a highly recommend place. Unlike many restaurants (both Chinese and otherwise) where quality and quantity have gone downhill after COVID reopening and resumption of dine-in eating, A La Kitchen has not deteriorated and kept the same consistent and robust quality of food and service. Congrats and good for you!!! You have the support of my family and friends. Keep up what you do please.
Nice northern Chinese style food served. Good food quality.
food is fair
A La Kitchen has been a favourite dining destination for my family and I for many years. The service is friendly and they always find a way to keep their food quality at a high standard, only minor inconsistencies most restaurants experience. Their xiaolongbao is consistently good, the wrapper/skin is thin yet manages to keep the hot & delicious soupy and meaty fillings in. Not to be missed.
Food is delicious but on the pricey end. Doesnt take credit card and only accepts cash. I paid what I think is just at 15% tip. The nerve of the waitress coming back with the change and telling me I didnt pay for tip. If my kids werent there I wouldve let them have it. A lot of places would give cash discount. Youre lucky I didnt ask for an official receipt because Im certain not all orders are reported.
This is not an authentic Shanghainese restaurant. Worst pan fried pork bun I ever had.
Due to COVID 19, my family and I havent visited this restaurant for a long time. We were here again last Sunday to celebrate my familys April birthday. Although its facade has not changed much, the interior has been renovated, giving us a sense of freshness, but the space is a bit smaller (there is no side hall now). On that day, we ordered a $200+ set meal, which included yellow croaker soup, four-style platter, stir-fried shrimps, Mushu duck, Dongpo pork, Sai crab...etc. As always, the food was cooked and prepared to a high standard. In addition to being delicious, the portions were more than adequate and the prices were reasonable. It can be seen that it can maintain a consistent level, which is rare and reflects the efforts of the operator! If it can continue to add new dishes, I believe it will increase its competitiveness!
The place is well decorated, the seats are comfortable, the service is good, and the food is of good quality.
Clean place, service is good, not crowd, ok parking, food taste a bit too salty
This might be the best Shanghai restaurant in Markham. We tried the XLB, sesame pancake with minced pork, wonton in hot and sour soup, and the A LA stir fried rice cakes. On another trip we tried the crab XLB, stir fried eel, sesame pancake, Dan Dan noodles and fried egg white with red bean. Everything tasted really good and was made with good technique as the boss himself is the chef here. XLB had very thin wrappers and plenty of soup. Favourite is the wontons in hot and sour soup and the stir fried eel which goes well with the sesame pancakes. The fried egg white dessert is ok. Staff are friendly and efficient.
Good food but a bit salty same as other venues
One of my favorite restaurants to visit before and after COVID. The food is delicious and service is above average. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for dining in or take out.
I really can t believe the restaurants in Shanghai run by Cantonese people. The pan-fried chicken turned into steamed stuffed buns and I couldn t complain. The eel paste was too expensive for 30 dollars and tasted dry. The drunken chicken had too much wine and tasted bitter, so Nanxiang Xiaolong could barely be eaten. The price is totally not worth it. I am really fooled.
Dinner set + beef noodles and crab Xiaolongbao $90 Foods are Delicious and nice environment
Best pork soup dumplings
Good service and very tasty dishes
Service is meh
Good
Terrible service, the waitress is a wondering ghost. No emotion and doesnt say a word. The food was mediocre, ordered the Shanghai fried rice cake and it tasted like pure soy sauce. Portion was small, barely fits 4 tiny Chinese bowls. It costs 17$. Steamed dumplings was ok, nothing special. I would not recommend this place
Food was much better this time. servers can use some more friendliness.
Last time I came here to eat was 3 years ago... And must I say, lots has changed since. We went in on a Monday around 11am for a quick lunch before heading back to Montreal. Right from the start we were given attitude like if we werent supposed to come in this early (They open at 1030). Even with no one else in the restaurant, we had to flag down our waitress to take down our order. While we were ordering, our waitress was arrogantly answering our questions while looking away the whole time like if she didnt want us to be there. The waitress then also started talking about us to the other waitress right infront of us I mean, the front counter was literally next to our table and we understand Chinese so not too smart of her. Ordered many items to share. The pan fried pork buns were just awful. Barely pan fried, more of a mushy steamed bread with a piece of oily unflavoured piece of meat in the middle. Then, the house special fried rice cake. Way too much soy sauce, and portion to price ratio was very unfortunate. For 17$ you get a very small portion. We also had the noodles and minced pork in black bean sauce. It was the best dish out of all. Hot, flavourful and delicious. The rest of the food was ok. It was time for the bill. Although we didnt want to tip the waitress for her amazing service, we still gave her 15%. No acknowledgement whatsoever. We gave her the money and not even a simple thank you came out of her mouth. She went to the back of the counter, opened the folder and made sure that we tipped. Very disappointing... Wont be back.
The taste is good, but the pricing and menu numbers are outrageous. The stir-fried dishes are all served on small plates and the portions are extremely small. The two pieces of Dongpo meat, which together are no bigger than a palm, cost twenty yuan. I don t know what to think. There were a lot of people dining, but there were only three waiters. It was obvious that they were too busy, and the food was served very slowly. Not recommended
Good Food & good service .
Havent been in years, what a surprise, I think their food has gotten alot better. Good for them!
It made me wait 45 mins for the fried dumpling and it was not even that good
Pretty good quality and authentic Shanghai style cuisine; braised fatty pork really good, also loved spiced braised beef noodles. Dessert fried Sasame egg white puff was a must! Noticed every other table ordered it.
Sad to say, the quality of the food has gone down compared to the past.
Food is just okay but its way over priced for what it is. Service is really slow as well. Wont be coming back
Decent food and a good variety offered. Good portion sizes for the set meal (for 2).
Authentic Chinese dishes with reasonable price! Recommend!
Worst service ever........
There are quite a lot of people, so be prepared to queue up for meals. The crispy duck is slightly salty, the lions head is very good, and the crabmeal and tofu is a bit bland. Personal taste. The overall taste is good.
My niece-in-law recommended this place to us for Xiaolongbao (steamed pork dumplings). The food is much better than Ding Tai Fung (which was our frequent restaurant for Xiaolongbao, but not any more). The place is clean and is always busy. Deco is nice. We are happy with our food, but the food has too much MSG and we were so thirsty after arrived home. I would advise the chefs not to use too much MSG. The dessert Sesame Rice Balls with Soy Bean Powder (M5) for dessert is a MUST to try. Very yummy!
There was a group gathering and the noise disturbed other diners.
Delicious northern style dim sum, must try
Pretty good shanghai style cuisine. Menu prices were reasonable. Staff was friendly. Restaurant was clean and spacious.
I believe this place has the best Shanghai noodles in Markham, at least because we like savoury/salty. This place is a bit expensive Vegetarian options: Rice and noodle dishes can be ordered as vegetarian but youre gonna pay the same price
hey have a new condensed menu. A focus on Northern Style Dimsum . Steam Pork Dumplings ($7.25) Pan Fried Pork Dumplings ($8.60) are my fave. They also make a great fried Rice Cake with pork ($17.99) and a classic Shanghai Noodle with pork & cabbage ($15.99) This place have been around for around 20 years and was once always crowded with line ups. The food is always fantastic. They have since downsized to half the size most likely due to covid. But it is great to see they survived these tough times!!
Food quality was decent except the duck, it was tooo dry. Now talking about the service, when we wanted to pay the bill by card, the server forced us to only pay by cash, after we realized we did not have enough cash, she then told us machine is available. Lol Recommended dishes
Service was good, waiter gave nice recommendations. Food was ok. I like the rice cake. Food
Came here at noon on a Sunday. We reserved a large table for 9 ahead of time. Restaurant was clean, service was pleasant and the food was flavourful. Parking was easy to find. Would recommend and look forward to returning.
Excellent
Awesome Shanghai dishes
Great food and service.
food is very good. a single teardrop fell down my cheek as the waitress brought our food out, the aroma was heavenly and I saw vivid memories of time in the motherland where I served for the Peoples Liberation Army 45th squadron. I have never truly experienced something that brought me closer to my culture and my identity as an asian man, but I am happy to call A La Kitchen not only an experience and a 5 star review, but also a family.
The Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings) are good. But the rest of the things we ordered are not so good.
A family favourite - we used to come here for in-house dining before the pandemic but have also ordered take out during this time too. The staff have always been so kind to my family and the food is always so delicious. We usually order the stir fried rice cakes, drunken chicken, fen yu, shrimp, broccoli + egg and their soup dumplings. While soup dumplings arent meant for take out conditions, theyre still really yummy but definitely cant beat eating it fresh out of the steamer. Cant wait to come back for more meals when things open back up!
Food quality is consistent and authentically Shanghainese. However, they serve dishes with extra helpings of attitude and poor service. They were more sour than their vinegar! Had I known they were running a promotion on kissing teeth and scoffs, I would ve spent my money elsewhere.
How can Karva be just right
out of the 8 dishes we ordered only the steamed soup dumplings was good. Hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour ( mostly just salty), pan fried dumplings was not juicy enough on the inside. Cold drunken chicken did not seem to be marinated long enough in the wine as the flavour did not infuse into the chicken well. For braised beef noodles the noodles were soggy and but the beef wasnt tender yet. stir fry shanghai noodles were lacking flavour as well. None of the dishes were impressive and prices were expensive. not likely to return for shanghai cuisines
Service is good, food average no surprise. newly renovated, price is fair.
Not bad. A bit pricy
Food still as good as before. Staff are friendly! Love the place.
I wouldn t call them bad, but it s a clear step down from the Ding Tai Fung across the street from this restaurant for Shanghai food. Soup dumplings were solid. Pan fried dumplings were not crispy enough, and the hot and sour soup was a little too sour and not hot enough for my taste.
Restaurant is clean and food is delicious. Better to reserve the table before you goto eat (Always busy)
This was good 10 years ago. The menu is now dated, service is sub-par and considering how many phenomenal Shanghai cuisine around the area, its worth just eating elsewhere.
Havent been to this place for a very long time (nothing to do with pandemic) and heard that their steamed crab pork dumplings taste different and Im very picky about these steamed buns so gave it a try tonight. I was very happy with the steamed crab pork dumplings ordered. We also ordered the steamed lobster & port dumplings, pan fried port dumplings, pork and vegetables wontons in soup, pan fried pork buns, veggie spring rolls and salty rice roll with fried stick. I find the salty rice roll for the rice not as sticky as expected other than that everything we ordered taste really good. Will definitely go back as Im a big fan of steamed crab pork dumplings.
The food is good, the portion is enough, the taste is ok, the crab crab, the sweet and sour bone are worth trying, and the high-quality red bean paste is good
One of my favourite Chinese restaurants in the GTA. Great for big family meals! Their Shanghainese cuisine is very authentic
Good service, clean and bright space. Prices are a bit higher. Food is tasty!
Nice place for Shanghai style food.
Food is very tasty, would recommend!
This is the most authentic Shanghainese restaurant in Toronto with the best environment. The beautifully designed indoor dining environment and the freshest ingredients all reflect the management intentions of the restaurant owner. Absolutely authentic Shanghai Mi Tao, highly recommended by Ala Zhen
Truly cannot stress enough how authentic the food at ala kitchen is, exactly reflects the name of restaurant, ala kitchen has a very special spot for the Shanghainese living in Toronto! The food quality has been very much consistent for years, it s the place if we feel a yearning for the and this service is absolutely great, the menu is authentic but also has enough options for non-Shanghaiese or non-chinese, very much family friendly, no doubt to become our favourite go-to Shanghai restaurant!
I hope to have a quiet place to have lunch around 2pm today. but! I was really surprised today! As soon as I entered the restaurant, I heard loud voices in Mandarin and crazy laughter coming from opposite corners of a table of about ten people. It turns out that the boss lady invited her friends today. As soon as we entered the door (this was the only one), we were startled by their loud laughter and talking. We thought they would be quieter when they saw other guests, but the loudness was so loud that they thought they had reserved the room. The waiter told us I didnt dare to ask them to lower their voices because the bosss wife was also present. It turns out this is not a restaurant! The proprietress also forgot that the store is open for business! If you want to treat guests, don t open business as usual! Boss Wife: Your employees are very nice and keep saying sorry, wait a minute. You enjoy chatting and eating with your friends, but your customers are having a hard time! Do you still want to do business?
Good quality and value Shanghai style. Lots of different dishes on the menu.
Really enjoy the food here they even have dinner combos for multiple people. King Pao chicken and tofu are some of my faves
Ive come here dozens and dozens of times! The menu is authentic, the portions generous, delicious and clean (not heavy/greasy). One of the few chinese restaurants where every item on the menu seems worth trying. The service is also curteous and quick. You cant go wrong coming here for a feast with friends and family without breaking the bank.
Good food and friendly service
The dishes are so small, and just no more than 5 pieces meat in the dish, so this is why this call combo? On the other way, dim sum very good.
Pretty disappointing During the pandemic, I was trying to support these local restaurants by visiting at least one a week. With this place, the quality went down and the portion sizes are disappointing. If Covid claims this as a victim, I won t shed a tear
Great place for Hong Kong style of Shanghai dishes.
Come here many times and food is always good. Had the Shanghainese dim sum many times and its tasty.
Really nice staff and great food!
