My go to place for good Sri Lankan food

Stopped by since I was in the area and ordered takeout. The food was really well priced and we even got some free appetizers while waiting for the food. We were shocked by how good the food was when we got home. Highly recommend ordering from here.

I am a customer for the past 12 months. Their food is always Freshly made, Consistent Quality and Tasty. Appas food is worth the drive. Just order online and pickup. The portion is enough for 3 adult persons. He deserves a try. The location has been renamed Spice of Jaffna. Same food as Appas Original.

I recently ordered takeout while on a diet and was thrilled to find they offered keto kothu. It was a delightful surprise flavorful and satisfying, perfect for anyone watching their carb intake. The chicken dishes are also exceptional, with the pepper chicken and chili chicken standing out as personal favorites. And dont miss out on the Malabar mutton rotti its a must-try!

I got a seafood parcel and the food quality was very bad and they only put one piece of shrimp and crab I used to get this parcel before and they used to load it up but now it s gotten way worse don t recommend

Found this place randomly from Google map (resturant near me) to grab some takeout for my Son and I. We ordered the Butter Chicken Lunchbox, Chicken Tuscan Penne, and the Malabar Roti (mutton). Portions were generous, price was very reasonable, plus the taste was amazing. What a pleasant surprise, will definitely revisit!!!

I ordered Lamprais .it was very good the food is very hot delicious tasting the staff are very friendly the place was very clean I recommend going there for lunch or dinner .Lamprais , Kothu are amazing

The food is SO good here, and reasonably priced! The chicken kothu was delicious, and so were their apps! They even have some fusion dishes that I havent tried yet, but Im looking forward to doing so!

Amazing food and service, did not disappoint!

It was our first time here. We were in the area and stopped in. We ordered the kutti roti, biryani, mutton rolls, fish cutlets, and fries. The portions were big. What was unique was that the rice was wrapped in a big leaf. The fries were good. We were not a fan of the jerk chicken rolls.

I recently ordered a chicken kothu rotti. I asked the person that I want a spicy one. Conclusion was a devil chicken kothu. I repeatedly requested make it very spicy. I was given the assurance of it will be spicy. THIS DEVIL KOTHU I GOT WAS NOT SPICY RATHER IT WAS SWEET!!!! May someone made a mistake sugar for salt !!!

Pretty average Kottu rotis, both chicken and mutton. Biryani was way below average....I have had better sri lankan food around Scarborough....this was surely a let down. Service was quick Atmosphere was decent and clean. Owner was helpful.

Been a fan of their food but the most recent purchase was a disappointment. Ordered a chicken Kothu Roti and a Banana Leaf Mutton Biryani. The chicken Kothu tasted really weird with a burnt taste to it and had no flavour or any pieces of chicken to it. The Biryani itself was slightly better but there was barely any Mutton in it! Also the accompanying sides were minimal and seemed so cheap in terms of portion. This will unfortunately be the last time I order from here given the portion and quality.

I have been going to this restaurant for about 2 years now. When they first opened up the food was amazing portions were fair vs the price. After a few months I went back today and got a Chicken Biryani on a banana leaf (which is usually loaded and tastes great). Man oh man was I disappointed with my order this time missing many components of the Chicken Biryani, the rice was dry with little to no gravy and no fish cutlet. I ordered an extra tandoori chicken leg and they reduced the portioning of the rice to add that into my banana leaf and they made the smallest chicken drumstick they could find (I paid $3). Lets not talk about the egg it was tiny (half the size of a regular egg). Overall very disappointed and its sad because I really did enjoy the food when it was good. Now this restaurant is overcharging and cutting corners the quality and authenticity is now dead. **NOT RECOMMENDED**

I ordered a Veggie Lunch box for $5.99, Banana Leaf Seafood Feast for $19.99 and Banana leaf baked Malabar roti with Mutton for $9.99. The food was very tasty. I liked the banana leaf-baked Malabar roti very much. It was not too spicy too. Their biryani upset my stomach for 2 days straight. Watch out for Jaffna spices (straight chilli). If your stomach cant handle it, youre better off eating elsewhere.

The Mutton Kothu Roti is a must. Perfect spice level very flavourful. We also got the paneer kothu roti at spicy level and Chicken Biryani weekend special but it couldve used more flavor. We got take out. Service : 5/5

PASSION STILL THERE THEN! i will change my review once the food tastes better and there is structure in place for dining and takeout. What I would love to see is Appas becoming the first Tamil Franchise!!! 1. Make sure all your rolls and anything else is 100% Fresh - max 30 mins sitting time 2. ***NOT HALAL*** Please remove the halal food sign and make it clear that alcohol is served within the restaurant. It is impermissible for a muslim to eat from an establishment that serves alcohol. Muslims that are not as devoted will obviously still eat here. However, it would be considered false advertising to those who follow the rules. Thus make it clear in your signage, your menu, and your website that alcohol is served here. If that is made clear it is up the person to decide if they would continue to eat from your establishment.

Great lunch options!

I got mutton kothu as we heard great reviews about Appa s but it was the most saltiest dish I ve ever tasted. I ve previously tried 2 different vege dishes from them and it was quite underwhelming and lacked flavor and was so dry. Can safely say after 2-3 solid tries I will not be going back.

Best Kothu in GTA!

We ordered 4 types of kothu, we had them to go & the food tasted great & fresh when we got home 40 mins later. The veggie kothu was decent, but the jerk & pulowees were exceptional. Loved the sea food kothu here as well which came with generous portions of crab, shrimp & squid. The owner was very friendly & you can tell they do not cheap out on the ingredients. Everything was flavoured very differently & were true to their names. They were very large portions & we ll def be returning for more. The spicy level was extremely spicy as we asked for spicy, we loved it but just be aware that when you ask for spicy, you get spicy! Can t wait to try their lamprais next.

I bought two lumprise (banana leaf wrapped )from this place yesterday, chicken and mutton. The food was horrible and we ended up with stomach cramps. I believe cutlets were fired at least three times, they were so dark - black. The boiled eggs were blue. They had anchovies, which were fired beyond eating. The eggplant curry was too old. I will not recommend this place to anyone. If you are doing takeout open the container in front of them for them to see what they are serving for their customers.

I ordered the mutton biryani lunch special for about $11. It came with a small salad and a pop. The mutton biryani was packed. The amount of food could be eaten for 2 meals. There was a good amount of mutton, wished there were a bit more mixed into the rice. Overall the meal was delicious. Id definitely come back and try the other lunch specials.

Excellent service. We placed an order for a small party. Start to end they provided the best service. Order was taken by Emil who was extremely courteous and professional. He went above and beyond to accommodate our order. Ruban handled the payment and he was also very friendly and courteous. When we went to pick up the order, Emil was on duty and he welcomed us with a big smile. Our order was ready to pick up on time. Since we were very concern about the spice level, Emil gave us free sample so that we will know the taste and the spice level. Very good customer service. I would highly recommend this place to my friends and family.

Healthy meal options delicious food with a great service!

Ordered a spicy paneer kothu and some devil chicken cheese rolls. The rolls were very good but the kothu roti wasnt spicy and didnt have much curry in it. Kind of flavourless. They put a good amount of paneer in it though.

The food is fine and the portion sizes are huge but the bill automatically added 13% of gratuity (party of 5) which was written in tiny font. When I went to pay the bill at the counter, the system asked me to pay an additioanl tip. Unknowning to the fact that the system already adds the tip, I paid more. Our server didnt say anything who was standing right next to me, which made this feel even worse. Really dissappointed by this experience.

One of the best place to dine. I am a college student and the lunch box here is cheap and tasty which helped me a lot. Do the dine and eat your stomach full. It feels like home.

My first time trying Sri Lankan food - and wow I was not prepared for how spicy it was! The Mutton Kottu was rich and very well-seasoned. For $14, it is a great price for a generous portion.

Placed an order at the store for a take out. Upon arrival I received the wrong order and the food was cold. I tried to call but no answer.

I ordered the jerk chicken rolls, and chicken devil cheese rolls for my work Christmas party. Every one absolutely loved it. Ruban was extra helpful cause i needed this done at 10:30 am and he did that for me right on time. I will be back for more thank you.

We ordered two kottu rotti and 2 plain rotti. Very disappointed that the rotti were so dry like old. I never eat a kothu rotti like this. I bought the plain rotti for my kid and dry and old. I called and they said it never happened like it but will it going to make it right??

This is our first time trying appas kitchen and they didnt dissapointed me, I woud definetly come back for dine in. We ordered mac n cheese mutton kothu, regular mutton roll , cheesy halapeno mutton roll, vadai and watilapam. Their watipam dissapointes me, but not the rest of the food. Very tender, juicy and flavourful mutton which is much better than the scarborough restaurents. Looking forward to visit them again for to try the other options from the menu **** Please ask for a takeout menu which the food is cheaper than the dine-in*****

Everything was so tasty and the customer service was amazing. Place is clean. I don t have goood pictures to post since we were soo hungry but I do have two images. This restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and modern. I ordered a cauliflower devil, a vegetable spring roll and a vegetarian feast that resembles lumprais a little. It has very good value for money and the tastes were distinct and flavourful. The vegetable feast dish has a variety of subtle tastes which complimented the appetizer s strong, contrasted flavour. I recommend this restaurant as it s a nice introduction to Sri Lankan cuisine.

Their food used to be amazing. All of us a huge fan of their mutton malabar roti and mutton lumprais. The last few weeks the lamprais was a big flop not one but, three every time. When I complained, the gentleman who spoke with me on the phone became very defensive. Specially when I told him that the first time I did not ask for a compensation, this time I need to be compensated. I dont think I will continue buying food from this store. Absolute waste of money.

I ordered devil chicken cheese dosa, mutton supreme cheese fries and seafood banana leaf special. I had so much expectation because my friend suggested it s really good. But the chicken was not fresh and was really bad and spoiled the taste of dosa, mutton cheese fries was okay and seafood banana special was also not that great. It was average experience.

I dont write reviews usually. But this restaurants food full of oil oil oil with worse taste ever. I bought rice and curry. Paid 25 dollar Absolutely garbage. If there is option I il give zero star.

Very horrible restaurant. Ive never tasted food as bad as this ever. The tables and chairs were also wobbling a lot, and the chicken wings were stale and hard to bite into. I would never recommend this restaurant, it will be a waste of your money.

I went to get mutton Kottu yesterday worst Kottu I ever had in my life!!! It s tasted like took the Rotti and mixed in the gravy and added mutton curry that cooked for few weeks ago. No chilies, no curry leaves, the Rotti also tasted old. Come on people you are charging lot more now what can t you make quality for the customers. Never go again!! It s not the first time it s happened. Worst place to go!!!

I ve been getting food at this place for a couple of years and they ve just been going down hill! Yesterday I purchased a mutton Kothu (spicy with a fried egg) and it was paid for online. The girl at the front double charged my husband for the extra egg because she assumed the egg charge didn t go through. She didn t bother to check either until I called to inquire about it after the fact for double charging me! Now back to the food . So to make the Kothu spicy they chopped up an overwhelming amount of dried red chillies!!! Every bite of that Kothu had a horrible taste to it. I understand they are generous with the mutton but it s to the point where there is more mutton than there is roti What a waste of $18!! Never giving this place another chance! Highly disappointed!!

I walked in here. I was intrigued and ordered the mutton supreme fries Belly boggled overdriven extragalactic I mean just simply genius that I m sure Gordon Ramsey would have been impressed. But it doesn t stop there . Today I walked in again (hungry!) I saw outside advertised cheese kothu (pilawoos style) and I thought that s a BOLD Statement to make! I should have taken a picture but it would be me giving a spoiler because a picture can t justify how spectacular this cheese kothu was from the presentation to the taste 6/6 I think for about 20 mins I forgot I was in Markham and I was on Galle Road at 2 am that s how sensational this cheese kothu was! I have a feeling the mutton biryani which I m keeping last to try will push me past cloud 9 Had to take some of it home and usually I m dopey at the end of the night and I forget to bring in the takeout box but I couldn t forget my sensational lunch so as I pulled up in my driveway .I did forget my takeout in the car however as soon as I lay in my bed I remembered and I ran out to rescue the last of my cheese kothu I have to say this There are people that don t believe in reheating food I ate my cheese kothu cold I loved it even more :D The gooey cheese texture was still there and the taste was some how ever better and it made 1 am in Stouffville such a delight while I watch my climaxing Tv show Power! Friendly customer service and beautiful atmosphere! Pineapple fluff and watalappan cheesecake were a unique take with classic flavors. Banana leaf seafood feast was great for 2 people, filled with crab, fish fry, cutlet, eggplant curry, egg and plenty of rice!

Food was pretty good based on Sri Lankan/trail cuisine. They had a lot of flavour and food was prepared fresh. They even have a wide variety of alcoholic beverages and are a halal restaurant. Banana Leaf Baked Malabar mutton roti was so dry, it was hard to swallow. They should be giving gravy on the side at least. The SriLankan Lamprais was a huge disappointment for the insane price of $22. Everything was so dry, and tasted bland. Portions are so small compared to the price. I came here based on the reviews, and it certainly is my last time.

Hands down the best kothu in town. We tried the chicken devil kothu. Their lamprais/ biriyanis are also amazing. Can make anyones day!

Had to wait about 15-20 minutes but food was fresh and hot. Flavourful, delicious and good portions for the price. FYI the food can get spicy so be aware and go with mild if you can t handle spice, the food has a nice kick to it. The guy at the front was very friendly. I got the chicken devil roti and would definitely come back to try other dishes. I recommend this spot for sure

Small restaurant with a neat environment . My Kids enjoyed the food and place. We ordered falooda, devil chicken dosa and chicken friedrice , Quality and quantity is best for the price.

If you re going to do a take on popular food items from this city you have to make them taste better.. I found the chilli onion fries tasted odd and had too much unevenly cut onions. I do like they give the option of breaded or naked wings however the wings are very dry I almost was tugging on the bone even though it was overloaded with sauce, kind of a turn off. The Mac & cheese mutton roll was the best thing I tried they seemed to put real mozzarella in it but I wouldn t go back for them. Confused kitchen & Wow wings got it on lock lol. What s bad to me might be good to you though so give it a try, staff is so polite.

Recently, they relocated to a new venue that now includes a seating area for dining. However, I was surprised to discover that despite the food being halal, they also serve alcohol in the restaurant. Personally, I cannot recommend this restaurant due to their inclusion of alcohol. Many restaurants offer halal options to attract Muslim customers, but they may not realize that practicing Muslims are not permitted to purchase anything from establishments that serve or sell alcohol. Therefore, the halal certification loses its significance in such cases. I hope they consider removing alcohol from their menu if they genuinely want to cater to Muslim customers.

This is a good place. The food is good and is served well. We ordered the mutton and veggie biryani, it came in a clay pot and it smelled heaven. Food is piping hot and tasty.

I finally appreciate the phrase cooked with love after ordering the mutton kothu and lumprais from here. The lack of care and disdain for the customer, heritage, history and food preparation is abundantly evident here. I didn t think you could remove flavour from Sri Lankan food, but they have achieved the unthinkable here. Appa s career shift isn t working, he should go back to whatever he was doing previously, clearly cooking isn t his strong suit. Good lamprais

Food has large portion . I think two people will be satisfied sharing a banana leaf meal . We ordered Dosa and mutton rolls which were delicious . All the food was so delicious we kept eating even though we are full because we kept wanting more of the flavor .

We ordered a Seafood lamprais late in the evening, the attendant advised that they didnt have a certain curry for that evening. Upon receiving our order we noticed that the restaurant gave us extra fried fish, extra shrimp, and extra cutlets. We were impressed with the quality of the food and the taste. I really enjoyed the food at this restaurant. Some of the best sri lankan food I have ever had. There was a little confusion with my order when I went to pick up but the staff were friendly and cleared it up right away. The food is flavourful and most of all it is spicy. Nice and spicy. Please dont change your recipe to cater to the white and Indian folks in Canada. Please stay authentic like you are and dont change! 5 stars

Came here for the first with my friends. And honestly I am so proud and happy that there is such amazing restaurant as such in this city. The food was amazing and the price is worth the portion size. Very tasty and well served in banana leaf. So tasty and traditional. All blessings to the team. Well maintained and clean atmosphere. 100% recommend this amazing place to all.

The portions were good and the price was quite reasonable by todays standards. The food does come out spicy but was very tasty. Im sure you could tell the server to have the chefs tone it down a bit. Then again, this food is meant to come out spicy!

Best kothu roti! Still need to try some other stuff, will do eventually, but kothu game is very strong, a must try in a competitive area.

The Mutton Kothu roti was so blend and had no salt at all. Only a few onions and mutton pieces were put on top. Very disappointing for the price. Mutton rolls and fish cutlets had no taste at all and Mutton rolls didnt even have Mutton obly potatoes.

Some of the best Indian food we ve had in Canada after being here for 12 years. Portion sizes are outstanding, service is great and the flavour is authentic. Truly a hidden gem.

Today, I happened to be at Appas Original Kitchen again. We ordered Appas Original Style Biriyani, Penne Pasta, and Kids Chicken Wings and fries. These were absolutely delicious and were exactly what we looking for. Loved the quality and portion. Value for Money!!

I have been going to appas for long time but the lately noticed that quality of food has gone downhill. When i go on weekdays food is not fresh at all and as i have tasted them before i can definitely tell taste & quality has changed. The mutton kothu roti is always good but lately that too has changed. Ordered their special mutton briyani yesterday it taste stale. I thought i will get atleast fresh food on weekends hence not the case. My brother ordered devil chicken kothu last week and he got food poisioning from it. I ordered cuttle fish last week and it was just soaked in oil, slimy & disgusting. I feel sorry to leave bad review as appas used to my favorite restaurant but i have noticed it is not what it used to be once they moved the unit and also serving old food should be a big no. I do see already that lot of the negative reviews are about being served old food so it has been like this. It doesnt take too long for people to find better restaurants. Hope management looks in to this and kindly dont ask me to call or email as im not looking for compensation or discount. Just fix the issue. Thx

This was the best Sri lankan restaurant I have ever been to. The food was amazing we got dosa and chicken wing we were a family of 4. The only thing that was off was the atmosphere , you could see the top ad all the pipes and does stuff it was disturbing to me and my family that was the only problem. Food is delicious. The mutton roll is one of the best I ve had, with generous amounts of meat to crepe ratio. The chicken fried rice we got is perfect with its spicyness and flavour. Worth the money.

Tried Halal Srilankan food for the first time. Really delicious. My personal favourite was Pepper Chicken Noodles.

Worst biriyani ever had in my life

I just ordered 8 chicken biryani luch box. It was awful & worst biriyani I ever had. The food was lacking salt and even the chicken had no flavour or taste. I dont recommend this place.

I live in Milton so I had my mom pick up this order on her way here. I ordered the seafood feast. Brought it home to see the portion size was so small for the $$$ paid. Loaded with rice and little curry. Only found one shrimp no squid curry and no chili paste. Very disappointing when you were looking forward to this.

Firstly, there is no dine-in option. We ordered and then tail-gated outside. Appas Original Kitchen is a small family-owned hole-in-the-wall with food made to order. The mutton lamprais was delectable, and so was the seefood kottu. The desserts (we tried 3 different ones) were all great -- the coconut, chocolate and the cheescake. The portion sizes were humongous. The lamprais could have easily fed 3, while the pottu was good enough for 2. Needless to say we had yummy leftovers!

This place has delicious food and is very generous with quantity. I have tried kothu chicken paratha a few times and its been consistently good. The staff is nice to deal with. I also bought their hot sauce and would highly recommend it if you are a fan of the really hot sauces.

I had chicken biryani, mutton kothu and does. Everything tasted top-notch. Chutney and sambar yummy.. Biryani good amount with many chicken pieces and leg pieces.
