Vibrant Japanese fusion yakitori izakaya bar offering binchotan charcoal grilled skewers, tapas, icing cold beer and cocktails. - Free indoor parking on the premises
Love love love!! Food was amazing and the matcha cocktail is definitely a winner. I love a place to catch up enjoy small bites and drinks and this met my expectation on all counts. You are able to order through the QR code which is great but that doesn’t mean you won’t get exceptional service. All the staff were super attentive and mindful to the smallest details like napkins and refills. I’m counting the days until I can go again.
I had an amazing time here celebrating my birthday with my friends (group of 10). I would highly recommend this place to anyone I know. We initially had a miscommunication about the reservation but the owner himself made sure that he could accommodate all 10 of us. He even gave us some sake ON THE HOUSE to apologize for the reservation mixup. He and his team checked on us the entire time and even made sure we had a ride home afterwards. He capped our tip % but honestly I would've easily tipped more because of their superb service. Their food was fantastic, especially their beef tongue (they use the back of the tongue, which is amazing), their drinks were spectacular (especially their cocktails and sake selection), and their service was exceptional (not only their owner, but everyone else as well.) If you're looking for a fun night out, then this is the spot. The team at Sumoki will guarantee it. They're awesome. Thanks, Sumoki.
When you miss your Japan trip and craving for some reminisce, this comes pretty close. Service was good. Amazing sake selection (like, impressed as an alcoholic) Most of the items well good. Over all satisfied. Some can skip, Some well impressive. Liver, skin, skewer w/ mustard, ginko, definitely loved Beef slightly over cooked Duck liver… kind disappointed Soft shell crab burger, quite lack of favour. Personally not a fan. Overall good experience. Definitely recommended. Especially for the limited options up town.
Since the move to Markham, I'm been to Sumoki a few times, and we love that this place opens 'til late since we often get off work late. This Japanese izakaya is tucked away near Main Street Unionville, with free street parking available. It is a nice place to wind down for some snacks, cocktails, and grilled skewers after a long day! The food quality is great, though a tad on the pricey side. Every dish is sharable between 2 people. The service is friendly and courteous as well. You order your food via QR code on the table, but you can also easily add/change items by telling your server. Some items I would recommend on the menu: - Mojito cocktail - Truffle Parmesan Yucca/Chicharron Fries - Mentaiko Carbonara Udon - Premium Set - it is a limited set with A5 Wagyu, Beef Tongue, Black Tiger Shrimp, Hokkaido Scallops, and Unagi
The staff were really nice and attentive, the atmosphere was nice and there’s free parking at the condo. The octopus and takowasa were my favourites. The beef chimicurri and enoki and pork skewer were also really tender and nicely flavoured. The scallops, yaki onigir and chicken were just ok. I think pricing is prob on par with other skewer places, but still overall pricey for portions. Our total came to ~$110 after tax and tip. We were content but also had space for dessert elsewhere immediately after.
Service was fantastic, met with staff immediately, brought to a bar seat and was waited on constantly with smiling faces and helping answers to any questions I had. The decor of the establishment was also very nice. Ordered multiple dishes, all high quality in terms of taste and presentation. Enjoyed a sake/matcha cocktail as well which was incredible. Have been to other izakaya places before and this is by far my favourite. Highly recommend. Second time I’ve been at this restaurant and I’ll be back again. 5 stars.
Lots of really good yakitori options and also good flavors. There were only 3-4 tables that were seated when we were there, so I was surprised that the food came out pretty slowly. The servers were really nice though and I know they tried their best but I think maybe the kitchen was kind of slow?
Food was tasty, really liked the soft shell crab sandwich. However, portions were very small given their price points. Ie. duck liver bowl that was $45 had 2 pieces of liver (one piece was very tiny) that were slightly overcooked, and not much beef or even rice either. Don’t expect to be full from this meal. Service and ambience were great.
Sumoki is a true gem in Markham! From the moment you walk in, the cozy atmosphere and unique vibe set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The yakitori, grilled to perfection over imported binchotan charcoal, is absolutely phenomenal smoky, flavorful, and cooked just right. The menu offers a perfect blend of authentic Japanese flavors with a creative fusion twist, and every dish we tried was a hit. The service was impeccable friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Whether you re a yakitori enthusiast or just looking for a fantastic izakaya bar, Sumoki is a must-visit. Can t wait to return and explore more of their menu! Highly recommend!
I went here a couple days ago with my friends, we are quite young, (under 15) but nonetheless were treated amazing. We ordered two dishes which came fairly quickly despite the restaurant being quite busy. The food was amazing and everything was filled with a ton of flavour. Even though three of us shared a 45$ tab, we were not treated differently and were even given a free dessert. I will definitely be coming back, and with my parents next time. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing and the service was too.
Great food and drinks with a fantastic atmosphere!
Very delicious food and considerate service! Will definitely come back again.
Good ambiance, food could use more flavour. But good hangout spot.
I love it
love the music they played in here. can really tell theyre all about the details at this place :)
First of all. Great atmosphere. This is not average yaktori i went in Japan. Its got a bit fancier vibe while the ones in Japan are mostly down-to-earth hole-in-the-wall kinda style. The food overall is..okay, lots of charcoal smoky flavour on the skewers which I really enjoy, i loved the scallops. but other than that, nothing else really impressed. Total cost for two of us was $110 after tax and tips. My suggestion is dont come here when youre hungry. Yakitori is meant to be a place where people come and drink AFTER your real meal. Those tiny skewer wont fill you up if thats the thing youre looking for.
Food is not the best for the price they are charging, environment is great for people to have a date.
Delicious
When I went into the 1/3 filled restaurant, they asked if I had a reservation. The lady stated that they re busy tonight and asked if seating at the bar was okay, we said no and asked if we could sit at a regular table. The entire night the restaurant maintained that seating level and if not had less throughout the night. It was absolutely absurd that they would make such claims and didn t have the numbers to prove it. Plus they had 6-7 waiters just loitering around because they were so busy . It was almost 1 waiter for every table. Food was alright. Small portions. Could have definitely went to someplace better. Service was poor to begin with by the way they treated us upon coming in. Obviously we were judged by the way we looked since we finished work. But service improved as we spent the money as we just wanted a good time and some decent eats. Overall the lady s initial service soured the entire experience. Waiters were attentive at the very least since there was a surplus of them. But I definitely wouldn t come back based on their poor service initially since they judge based on looks.
Whats the only solution to worries is roasted birds and wine The food is nice and the service is also very nice
Delicious, the crab patties are very good It s a treasure of a roasted bird restaurant, suitable for going to Banwei after get off work
The food was so so, especially the chicken, the smell was too strong. Atmosphere was good.
I have expected the price is above an average, subject to the location. The food portion is relatively small and not outstanding. I tried their signature mocha beer. A very light beer with mocha powder on top. I can make it at home at a much cheaper price.
A bit over priced with the amount of food you get. Otherwise, everything tastes amazing.
nice place of izakaya. Skewer is good.
Too Expensive.
Overpriced by
The tiger shrimp and scallops are pretty good
There was no hint at the time of booking there was a time limit, and there was no hint when we came in. In the middle of our meal, the manager came over and kicked us out. We had to leave before we finished half of our order. The manager came over again and again and urged us to leave. The service in this store is terrible! never come again!
Food is good, service even better, highly recommended
TBH I was very disappointed with the food. I have been looking for Chochin everywhere in Toronto and was excited to see they have it. But for 15.99 a skewer?? And with chicken heart? I dont mind paying a premium if its the real deal. Most of the skewers were bland and even not warm when they got to the table. The udon was undercooked. The noodle was hard on the inside like pasta. I dont know how that happened. Other than food, everything else was great.
Service was excellent and in love the food and vibe.
No doubt my favorite restaurant near home! I great place for good food, sake and laughters. Wheelchair accessibility: Washrooms are wheelchair friendly
Amazing food, very well done. Great ambience and organized for an engagement even. The beef tenderloin was exceptional.
Really beautiful restaurant with solid food. Can t wait to come back!
Went as a party of 17, food came out very quickly, the servers were always there in case we needed something and water was never lacking. Food was great! Highly recommended the Buta Don and the sauce that came with the cassava fries was amazing. This place is definitely worth a visit.
Run away! Garbage compared to Zakkushi, and more expensive. Funny that they only offer salt(shio) because a bit sauce could cover their bad grilling skills. Ginkgo nuts are from cheap cooked Chinese packaged food, why cook it twice LOL. $45 duck liver bowl with two pieces of liver is just ridiculous.
Expensive, small portion and mediocre taste. Duck liver bowl is $45 but has only two pieces of liver! The rest is just beef! Paid $110 (no drinks) for two people and still not full. Didnt see any Japanese people here, which is another sign of inauthentic food.
The dudes here super friendly and foods bomb
Can t ask for more! Service, music, food and decor all on point! Wings is a must get!
This place was amazing, went there with some friends and they treated us very nice. Kept us updated on our table while we were waiting, the service was very kind and helpful, and the food was amazing. We had the wings, skewers, and fried softshell crab sandwich, it was delicious. Definetly will come again!
I recently dined at sumoki , and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we walked in, the warm and inviting ambiance set the perfect tone for our meal. The food was nothing short of spectacular. The duck liver bowel was a highlight beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. I also appreciated the creativity in their menu, especially the sumoki set.
Its a beautiful place, the service is perfect and the food is delicious.
I love going to dinner at that place, the atmosphere is incredible, the dishes are delicious and the service is always good.
They make you live an experience from the moment they welcome you, the dishes and drinks are incredible, my favorite is the duck liver bowl, I totally recommend it.
The food was good, the staff are really friendly. I love the decor and the smell of the atmosphere. However, the price is above average with relatively small portions.
The food was flavorful, but I found it a bit on the oily side. However, the service was excellent attentive and friendly, making the dining experience enjoyable overall.
Great vibe and amazing food! Staff is also very attentive.
I am impressed by their service, it s hard to find a decent dinner place with high standards of hospitality. Food and vibes are good , definitely recommended.
Amazing dining experience here! All of the yakitori we tried were fresh and delicious, especially the premium yakitori set - the flavor and presentation was impeccable! The waiters were also very attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was very inviting and cozy. Definitely recommend checking out this restaurant when youre at Main Street Unionville!
Highly recommend Sumoki to whoever wants to find a nice place to visit with friend or a date night! Tasty and delicate food, warm and comfy atmosphere! Will definitely visit again.
What main st Unionville needed, a cool spot with great food. The cocktails were not expensive but lacked alcohol. They were very simple so they should have tasted of some spirit. But you dont come here for cocktails... you come for interesting and delicious food. Ill come back, I just wont order a cocktail.
This restaurant is worth the hype! I predict a Michelin star or two in the near future. The food is ASTOUNDING. We had the sticky rice balls in a sweet soy; the spicy mustard chicken; the wagyu gyoza; the beef with a green sauce; the pork wrapped mushroom; the beef rice bowl; the yucca fries. Im sure Im missing a couple, but every single item was a hit! Flavourful, perfectly cooked, quality ingredients. Just perfection. The time and care out into preparation is apparent. Im looking forward to trying the soft shell crab burger the next time I go back, and the beef tongue as recommended by the staff, who were very friendly, attentive and helpful. Be prepared to spend a decent penny, but well worth it. Highly recommend! I strongly suggest making reservations, as the space is small and quite popular.
Went for my birthday and was not disappointed. Service was very attentive. The menu is pricey but there are a variety of great options. Will definitely go back to try more items!
Excellent food, friendly service and on top of it they were playing great music. One of the best restaurants Ive been to in Markham.
The food and vibes here are amazing. The brussles sprouts and wagyu gyoza are a must try! The service is always exceptional and I would highly recommend!
Amazing food and great vibe. Great place for casual dinning and happy hour. However, food portion is small.
Forget about the use of GPS or Google map! To locate this place, just use your sense of smell! Yup! the trail of mesmerizing Binchotan charcoal aroma from the restaurants exhaust vent is as effective a tracker as your smartphone! Arguably the best and most authentic Japanese Yakitori place north of the 401. Quite a few dishes we tried tonight deserve to be placed in the Wow-Worthy category! Standout include those skewers of thick cut, tender, well crusted and nicely sauced beef tongue. Absolutely out-of-this-world! Amazing to find such a fine quality product outside of Japan!! Another Yakitori benchmark I like using were chicken liver. Those were executed near perfect as well and did not disappoint. Other notable and delicious skewers we ordered included: - Chicken thighs, skin, soft bones, meat balls, heart and..... Cock Testicles !!! Favorite were those light and juicy meatballs with a superb tasting dipping sauce. - Beef filet Mignon with Chimichurri sauce, Pork Belly with spring onions and Enoki mushrooms, Tokyo Spring Onions, Zucchini....etc Non Yakitori items ordered include: - Duck Foie Gras with Raspberry jam sandwich ( good but overpriced! ) - Soft Shell CraB Burger ( Crispy and lightly battered Crab; sandwich nicely dressed. Thoroughly enjoyable! ) - Udon Carbonara ( so good we did an encore! ) - Parmesan Yuca Fries ( Ultra crispy and piping hot! Exceptional ) - Fried Mochi This is one excellent venue for authentic Yakitori fare, albeit a touch on the pricey side. However, for the fine quality they offer, this place is more than acceptable for the occasional splurge! Well worth returning! BTW, the friendly service was extremely competent and attentive.
Visited on opening on a Friday evening and greeted by friendly staff. The decor looks very impressive and I would consider this place pretty trendy. There was no problem obtaining a seat, however, past seven oclock Id recommend obtaining a reservation as the place started to fill quickly. The staff are Chinese, I was unlucky that the one staff member who speaks Japanese was not there, however, the nice lady behind the bar was able to speak a little. The food was very interesting and if I went for dinner I believe there would be many choices. Id popped in for a quick look and found the tapas (edamame) good and the price of draft beer reasonable. I did try the house sake which I couldnt complain as they had forgotten to charge me for it! Facilities were well maintained. On a last note if you are from an older conservative Japanese background you might have a few reservations visiting as there were tattoos visible on the staff.
The restaurant design brings an atmosphere to high-end Japanese food. But the dining experience didnt have it.
Chicken skewers were all quite dry and tasted similar. Brussels sprout, pork belly egg rice, soft shell crab burger, atmosphere and service were great. Everything else was average.
The food is decent, but the prices are about 30% higher compared to other Yakitori restaurants. $45 for a small duct liver don with only 2 duct liver on it .Unfortunately, the experience was soured by the staff questioning my decision to tip based on the pre-tax amount, claiming theyd never heard of tipping before tax. This left a negative impression and overshadowed the meal.
Highly recommend the soft shell crab and the skewers. Service is extremely attentive.
Food was ok but it was too pricey with little portions. Also when paying tips, the waitress told me I don t pay enough. I was calculating base on pre tax price cause if clients pay cash and the tip is not on the bill then your tip would be based on pre tax price. what s what I read on cra website.
Do not recommend. It started to feel odd the moment we walked into the restaurant. 3 servers came up but they only stared at us in silence until I initiated the conversation. We got seated and put in our order online. Our server only showed up to bring our dishes. So to be honest there was service but quite minimal. The food quality was genuinely good, despite the mismatched quantity and price. On top of the hyper-inflated bill we decided tip them low (still over 10% pre tax, and remember, minimal service). They thought it was too little for them, and upon that we had the longest conversation with them since we got in. They really need to figure out how to run their business better.
Booked a table for dinner but we still had to wait 30mins for a table. Skewers were pretty dry and the taste is not rich enough. The only skewer I would recommend is the chicken meatball skewer, the meatball was pretty juicy. We also ordered the onigiri, the rice was too hard and overly crispy. Overall, the resto has a nice Japanese vibe and atmosphere. It s still a decent resto to gather with friends but the food was just okay.
Fun to try all of the different skewers. Very considerate owner and staff. The drinks were delicious, especially the matcha!
We came here in July 2024 for my birthday. Overall quite pricey but you get what you pay for because I absolutely loved the food here. The skewer sets were very tasty and the beef tenderloin chimichurri deserves a new visit. The team was efficient and friendly enough. Definitely worth a revisit.
Genuinely puzzled by the lower reviews here and also on that other review place that starts with a y and ends in elp, because the experience for us was incredible, superb and exceptional hands on service by the staff (esp. the manager who went above and beyond), some outstanding meats like the foie gras and beef tenderloin, and some remarkable menu items one doesnt see elsewhere like veggie cake tempura (called kakiage), or yucca fries. I think having a yakitori type place (charcoal grilled meat skewers) in York Region is pretty unique, at least I dont know of any others, perhaps there are better ones downtown, but we wouldnt know. The clientele btw were all cool young people who probably loved its location near Main St. Unionville as an alternative to the older or seniors places if you know what I mean, definitely we dont want to be hanging out with those retirees with too much botox, here you can enjoy company with youngsters with too much botox instead. I dont think given food costs today it was overpriced at all, a seared foie gras sandwich for ex. was only 19 dollars and the flavor was exceptional. We cant wait to go back! Even the Sapporo draft was really fresh. Recently opened, he told us, in Oct. 2023 so obviously trying hard to build up a good reputation, which is a plus for us.
We were sitting at the bar table, and the bartender Corinne is very friendly. The cocktails were so good! Mojito and the highballs are just try!
This has been one of the best dining experiences I had in a very long time. The staff are so incredibly friendly and attentive. I dropped my chopstick on the floor and less than 10 seconds later they returned and replaced it and the same experience was all night when I finished tissue papers, needed a water top up and all without prompting. They frequently cleared the table and exchanged our side plates with new ones so sauces dont mix. The service is similar to what you get in Japan, which is truly remarkable. The food was delicious, in fact, so much so that I forgot to take photos of everything and inhaled the food. The Oden is perfect for when it gets chilly at night. The yakitori had the coal infused flavors and were cooked perfectly. The crispy skin one was so crispy without being overdone. The wings were cooked so well, so crispy, which is usually difficult when it is sauced up. At the very end, we had the onigiri and crab burger, which were both so good but very rich, I would recommend starting with it instead of later in the night. Literally, all the food was so good. We had more different skewers, takoyaki, matcha beer, and not one item disappointed. I am already planning my trip back. At the end of service, they provided us some complimentary sake, which was such a kind and sweet touch. Overall, it is the best dining experience in Canada to date, and I hope it keeps remaining exceptional!
Found this place on IG...great service, super friendly & attentive, food was delicious and so was my drink! Well definitely be back.
Food is normal to fair, but the price is sky high, they charge par to downtown izakaya
Heard about this place through tiktok, from the videos it looked like a nice place to try. Although, don t be fooled by the atmosphere. The place is new, modern, and smells great inside. However the service and food is not the greatest. We were almost denied entry since we didn t have a reservation (we came right at 5pm when they opened for dinner as a group of 6). We ordered drinks (matcha beer and cocktail) and not sure how, but these took long to come out when the place was empty. Instead of coming out at once, they came out one at a time almost 10 minutes apart. Basically the food was coming out and the drinks were not even served yet which is odd. It s an izakaya, so we knew portions were small, but the disappointing factor is that the food lacked flavour. The carbonara udon did not taste like carbonara. It was very milky, bland, and tiny in portion. Everything was on the pricier side so we expected the food to taste good, but everything was bland except for the cassava fries. There are definitely better izakaya options so I would skip out on this one if you re in the area.
The taste actually is the worst skewer ever had.
Great place
Absolutely loved my experience at Sumoki Restaurant! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxing meal. The menu offers a fantastic variety of dishes, and each one we tried was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. The staff was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. Highly recommend if you wanna find a good restaurant in Unionville! Can t wait to return for another delightful meal!
Food was decent, beef tongue and duck liver bowl are my favorite! Nice vibe, staff is super nice and friendly, would definitely visit next time.
Very friendly staff who will constantly check in on you and explain fully what the dishes are. Grill dishes are delicious are all shareable. However, was a bit hard to grasp how much is enough. Guess you just need to try everything :) Location is in a building complex shared with residences, a street off Main Street. There is underground parking (can be validated) that is shared with residence.
One of the best skewer restaurants that I had been to! 10/10 for sure! Enjoyed the experience here and the food was exceptional!
Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. I would recommend anyone to go to chat bar across the street for more affordable and tastier options or if you want Japanese skewers, head to Zakkushi instead. The skewers here are subpar, expensive and lacking. All the meats except for the wagyu were on the drier side. The limited edition egg with the ovaries were $18+ and absolutely not worth it. Taste and presentation were on par with you cracking a raw egg yolk and eating a piece of chicken liver. The best bites of the day were the octopus which probably come prepacked and the yuca fries. However, the chicharron was stale underneath.
Amazing service & food!!!
The food was fantastic and our server Kenny is the best there is!!!
The restaurant environment is very good, clean and tidy, the dishes are rich and delicious, the service is attentive, and the most amazing thing is that there is a lantern
The food was amazing and the service was fast. Kenny served us and was really personable and friendly. I would come again visit just for Kenny!
Amazing food, atmosphere and customer service - Kenny is the best! He went above and beyond to help us with the menu and last minute orders. One of the best restaurants in Unionville! We will definitely be back every week. If you want the best go see Kenny!
The food here was excellent, I just came back from Japan and this place is the closest to true Japanese quality yakitore Ive had in Toronto and is worth the relatively steep price. The service provided by Kenny and the staff was also top notch and made the experience all that much more enjoyable.
Hidden Gem in Unionville. Friendly staffs who will constantly come check up on your, making sure water is filled. Food is delicious with great flavor. Portion however, is a bit on the small side! Tasty food makes up for it
Small Japanese yakitori bar hidden within main st. Unionville in Markham. Staff are friendly and very attentive, have never had someone refill my water so often. Flavours are good, a bit on the pricier side especially if youre there to actually eat dinner. Recommendations: #1 beef tongue (must try), #2 skin kawa (crispy af fried chicken skin), #3 enoki mushroom pork Maki, #4 p-toro, #5 mentaiko carbonara udon #6 takowasa (baby octopus). For drinks, got the yamayuzu matcha cocktail, its well blended, good mix of tangy and sweet with heavy hitting matcha. Doesnt taste too alcoholic for those that dont like alcoholic tastes. Skip desert if youre not into rice cake types of desserts. Would come back, hopefully they add more skewer options in the future. Could do better on the beef skewers, and have more pork options. Would like to see more seafood options as well. Tip for parking: there is indoor parking underneath the condo behind the restaurant. Additionally, you can book for seating ahead of time, the restaurant is on the smaller side.
Steak chimichurri was so tender melt in your mouth ooouuu so good. Thanks Kenny!
Excellent food and very friendly staff. I have to give a special mention to Kenny who went above and beyond with the service. Definitely will come back
Great service and food. Recommend the carbonara udon.
A nice place with decent food and great service. The servers are very kind and attentive. Thanks for a nice dinner :)
I had some of the best and most genuine service I ve ever experienced! Also great food. (I went August 13th around 10PM)
Good environment! Good service! A restaurant I like recommended
The service is really great. I really like it. The taste is also great. I highly recommend the udon noodles. It s really delicious.
Food and drinks are great, owner and staff were very friendly, good dining atmosphere
Yakitori was delicious! The egg yolk dip elevated the taste of the meat. A small restaurant so reservations are recommended. Fast and friendly service. Price is above average.
The food is delicious and the servers were really nice and attentive. We had a baby with us and they were so accommodating, noticing we needed more napkins and brought them over without us asking.
Food is quite pricey. We spent 30m in the establishment. Food comes under seasoned and lukewarm at best. The chicken was overcooked and kind of dry. We started with the yucca fries. Those were ok but misleading as they were propped up on way more pork rinds so it looked to be a larger portion than it was. The cooked food felt like it was reheated and missing flavor. It came out quickly so we felt it was either pre cooked and waiting or leftovers from a previous batch. We also got the wagyu skewers and it was half the size as in the photos on the menu. The meat was also quite chewy and had tendons. Not worth the $28 charged. Our skewer set was missing a skewer and they didn t have one of the items in the set. They didn t tell us this until we asked why one was missing. What came out instead was actually pretty good but made us realize how bad the rest of the meal was in comparison. There are other options out there so think twice before visiting.
Delicious food, great service and ambience. Easy payment option with simpopay. Price on the higher ends but great date place. Parking: Limited parking on street, plenty in the parking garage.
One of the best places the group and I have ever been to. Beyond friendly service, great atmosphere, amazing drinks and food. I would say our standards are usually high and Sumoki really set the new standard. Can t wait to go back.
Ordered Mentaiko cabonara udon, it was decent. 2 skewers, chicken liver and pork belly enoki. Chicken liver was flavorful. Pork belly was a little thin but seasoned well, I had to double check on the menu whether it was just pork or pork belly. A little on the pricier side, but staff was very friendly. They gave me a chicken gizzard skewer by mistake, but offered it on the house. Service was great overall.
I like atmosphere and the service. Food wise is okay, a little salty for me. The mentaiko udon is a must try.
First visit to this lovely establishment. Good was very delicious. All the meat skewers were tender and flavourful. All the veggie skewers were fresh and taste amazing while hot. The rice and carbonara dish were so good and perfect to finish off the meal. The service is top notch. Staff are so attentive and the small details like refilling your water without even asking is what makes the dining experience that much more pleasant. I appreciate how the staff introduce and describe each of the dishes considering it was our first time dining there and also gave us great menu suggestions. The decor is perfect. The design and lighting make the space a perfect place to dine while having great conversations with your friends. The music is tasteful and the volume is just right so you re not having to scream to just chat with your table mates. Highly recommend trying this restaurant out and I ll be sure to be back and try all the other dishes. 5 stars for sure !
Delicious yakitori and excellent service. The staff were very attentive and offered such warm hospitality. Every good restaurant should offer this kind of service.
Came with a few friends through apparent random google search from one of them. Pleasant surprise as to how well the experience is. Glad to find a gem like this in the area. Will definitely be coming back.
Friendly and energetic environment , amazing tapas and skewers, mostly of the food are small portion which is good for two. Just parking is not enough which is ok.
Fantastic atmosphere and delicious food! The staff are attentive and polite.
Best food in town and excellent service! Definitely I will go back again!
Nice vibe with variety of yakitori! A must try Jap Izakaya
Comfortable restaurant with some of the best customer service Ive ever had. I enjoyed the negima yakitori the most, followed by the age mochi and dango. EDIT: The restaurant is much busier than when I first came here, so if youre coming during popular dining hours, be sure to have a reservation. The soft shelled crab burger is the best entree here, both in taste and value.
Food is normal, but a bit salty, which is acceptable. Good service and good atmosphere, but very over priced
The foods are excellent , Ben is so friendly.
best food and service ever
Cute Japanese bar in Markham. They have a pretty decent selection of sake. Came here with a group of friends and we really enjoyed our time here. We didnt make reservations. When I arrived and asked for a table, the place was already pretty full. I was actually seated right away and was asked if I wanted water. The waiter took the time to explain how to access the menu and the wifi. FYI youll want to connect to the wifi because the reception in the area wasnt very good. We order a whole bunch of items from the menu and our food came pretty quickly and was pretty good in my opinion. But to be honest we were really there to just drink and chat. We honestly had a blast there, our waiter Ben was awesome! The bartender Corinne makes awesome drinks! Would definitely come back just because of the service we got!
We were visiting Toronto (Markham) and found Sumoki online. What a fantastic place!! Really delicious food but even better service! Every single staff member went above and beyond to make our dinner memorable. I wish we lived here as this would be a weekly stop!!
Good service, the restaurant has cool vibes and atmosphere! The Yakitori was really good! The waygu literally melts in your mouth. Price is as expected for the location and also for Yakitori. Highly recommend. Definitely come check this place out. Food : 5/5 |
This restaurant was very good! The food and service was amazing. We had such a friendly attentive waiter who was so kind and nice. A bit pricey but would still reccomend on an occasion.
Discover the treasure roasted bird shop Soft-shell crab burger: The bread is toasted to a crispy crust. The soft-shell crab itself has no taste, but with the sauce, it adds a nice layer of texture when sandwiched between the bread. Fried chicken wings: The taste is heavy, with a good sweet and salty texture. The first few are amazing, but if you eat too much, you will feel tired. Duck liver rice: The duck liver is not as soft and tender as expected. There is a certain distance compared to real foie gras, but with the sauce mixed with tender beef and raw eggs, the overall feeling is very good and the price is not expensive. Corn: fried to perfection The price is pretty good, the service is good, and the store decoration has a nice atmosphere. But the music in the store is all rap, it sounds like it, doesn t it match the style of the food? Or maybe the boss wants to open a trendy roasted bird shop haha
This place had their official opening not too long ago after having been in their soft opening for some months - Ive been here probably four times, (and counting) now for a reason: they have a varied menu, food is reasonably portioned, flavor is delicious, and lastly, service is friendly and attentive Ill have to post photos with captions on them due to the recently implemented character limit on Google reviews - but if youre looking to come here, most of the dishes Ive tried will be listed as photos for you to read about
Really cool new Japanese bar located super close to Main Street Unionville. With very chill vibes, great place if you want a small snack or drinks. My friend and I just wanted to grab some drinks after dinner. So tried two of their cocktails (angel s forest and first encounter), which were both really good. We also tired their mentaiko carbonara udon which was a bit on the smaller side but super creamy. Our server was also very kind and attentive (always blent down speak to us). Want to try their skewers next time but they are quite pricey.
Japanese izakaya style food. Loved those skewers, so flavourful with the smokiness of charcoal BBQ. Very authentic. Many selections from food to drinks. Like the vibe of the place in this quiet neighborhood, not too loud but yet relax atmosphere. Perfect place for gathering with best friends. However it is quite pricey, not something I can come often.
The yakitori were good but the chicken liver was too dry. Drinks were good and service was great. Will revisit for sure.
Vibe was great, food was below average
My new favourite restaurant and the staff was so friendly when they noticed I finished my Ramune just offered another one on the house!
Food was pretty good but the drinks........ Underwhelming! Services were great, didnt have to wait for ANYTHING even food.
Came here with friends and really enjoyed the meal here! It s rare to see a yakitori place in the GTA let alone in Unionville of all places so this came as a surprise to me when it popped up almost half a year ago. I would highly recommend getting the tebasaki, yakionigiri, mentaiko carbonara udon, duck liver bowl and the pineapple mocktail. The prices are a bit high though but that s expected for a skewer restaurant. I would definitely come here again if I m ever craving yakitori when I m around the area.
The baked rice cake is delicious, the small meatballs are also great, the lantern is a bit cold, everything else is good
This place can get very busy so make a reservation if you can. They try to accommodate if you re a walk in. Food and drink selection is limited. Atmosphere is very nice though
Ordered a few dishes to share.. other dishes were hot and fresh but disappointed with the premium set. All skewers in the set were lurm warm and the egg yolk was dried a bit and not much taste. Not cheap for that set but didnt think it worth. However, the rice ball was very good and all sides were crispy. Brussels sprouts was nicely done. All servers were busy and we waited awhile to get attention so could ask for our check. Parking was limited and was confusing at the garage.
Service and food was great
If I could give this place 10 stars I would. The servers were attentive and so helpful with my 1 and a half year old. The food was AMAZING!!! I would definitely come back again.
5 dollars for a can of coke is crazy, food just average. Hella overpriced
As the name implies, the speciality is yakitori. So we tried grilled food mostly and doesn t disappoint. The grilled food we tried is nicely grilled on the outside and juicy and soft on the inside. We tried beef tongue, chicken cartilage, chicken skin, pork, onions, unagi, chicken with shiso, chicken wings. All worth trying in my opinion. Since grilled food only taste best when fresh off grilled, I recommend u only order a few skew at a time instead of large batch at once since once becomes lukewarm warm, doesn t taste as good. The oden is average and the radish tasted like it was cooked in boiling water and then put into the oden soup before serving. It s ok to skip in my opinion unless u crave oden. Also tried the rice ball , found the rice inside too wet and mushy not my pref. Ordered a matcha beer, tasted very good but more than 1/3 are bubbles and the glass is so short as shown from the pic In my opinion bit of a rip off for that beer considering costing $10. All in all, I would give it a 4 stars if considering grilled food only. But factoring in the beer, oden, , probably 3 stars.
Food is good but I think the portion sizes are very small considering the price. Spent $200 for two people to be full. Service was fine.
Went here for my wifes birthday and was very disappointed. The staff basically harass you with water refills, practically no privacy. I dont understand, maybe this is a Chinese culture thing... More refills = better service?! Well that aside... We got our yakitori and our waiter said eat quickly before it gets cold, anyone with a toddler knows thats tough but I managed it, the eating part... And it was cold, now Im feeling like the waiter said this as a means to be sarcastic. Oh well, we ate the rest of the yakitori... No point complaining now, and then our yaki onigiri arrives 20 minutes later. We feed the onigiri to my son and got out as quick as we can still hungry and thinking what a horrible experience, a bit over priced as well. I have been to Japan multiple times, my wife is Japanese, Yakitori is meant to be eaten hot, warm is tolerable, but cold and over priced?! Oh well at least I got enough water, staff are all former mandarin employees probably.
Taste, food, environment and service were all impeccable. Overall incredible experience. Highly recommend. Food
Very cozy place, visited couple days ago, it wasnt too crowded, maybe it was the weather. There are parking on the street, and more visitor parking within the condominium as per the staff. The servers are very attentive and enthusiastic. Delicious food and the ambiance was fabulous with 90s hip hops music. Will come back soon.
Very interesting hidden Izakaya, they have so many interesting dishes and drinks that I haven t tried in Canada. And atmosphere is new and clean. Good for girl s night
Now that Toronto has a lantern! !
The decoration is beautiful and the food is suitable for couples. I often come here with my wife for a get-together.
Tasted authentic and nice to share with others. The atmosphere is nice . We liked the matcha beer. Very light, refreshing with hint of matcha and not bitter. Pricy, so I would save this for a date night. Food
Great izakaya place. The service was exceptional, the food was very good. Really recommend the chicken liver skewers, the carbonara udon, and the Brussel sprouts with bacon and sauce. The only thing I would change is just the music volume to be a little lower.
I ve come here twice and food was consistently just okay. I felt like the skewers didn t have much flavour. Portions are small for what you pay for - especially the mentaiko udon for $18. The only things worth ordering is the Wagyu skewer which was nice and tender and the wasabi chicken. Service was okay and it does look nice inside.
Brief Summary: Food (7.4): Decent but can improve. Service (10): Excellent. Atmosphere (7): Nice but basic. Overall (8): Good experience, service stands out, room to improve overall. Full Details: Food (7.4): Overall, food is better than average, I would prefer more salt and sumoki but food would be perfect for those who like just enough. Out of the dishes I had, my favourite was the brussel sprouts(nice balance of salty and sweet with the honey balsamic and parmesan) and least favourite would be the large hokkaido scallops(texture of the scallops were grainy). Service(10): Excellent and I will be honest I do not feel this way about a restaurants service often. They were friendly, and attentive but not annoyingly attentive. In my opinion, a lot of other Markham restaurants should learn from example. Atmosphere(7): The aesthetic was a typical black and white theme, it did the job but in my opinion does not stand out. I liked the photo decor on the wall and ceiling but I think they needed colour somewhere to make it complete, for example some Japanese themed greenery. Overall (8): Decent food, nice place, great service, there is room for improvement but, based on service alone I believe the restaurant will continue to improve.
Chicken Liver Mousse Chicken liver is made super smooth, and can be paired with cranberry sauce to relieve greasiness. Don t skip adding chopped green onion, the flavor enhancement effect is so strong One of the surprises of Shisho Yakitori, the perilla flavor combined with the chicken tastes great, the meat is firm and juicy The beef tongue here at Beef Tongue is thick and sincere. It melts in your mouth and cannot be beat. The second surprise Tsukune Egg Yolk, the raw egg yolk juice is not fishy and smooth, and the other sauce tastes great, the third surprise Fairy Yuzu is a purple color with a strong grapefruit flavor, which is good Sumoki Set, a must-try for lazy people, try 5 items at once. The dessert is very animated-feel Teriyaki three-color dumpling Dango Overall, I think the product is pretty good, and its a Japanese-style bar with a dark atmosphere and a good feel.
Came here on Friday 7:00pm. We did make reservations but we waited almost 20 mins for our table. You order by scanning their QR code on the table and it was very easy. Internet connection for cell phone is very bad here so you will have to join their WIFI in-order to use their online ordering system. Food is prepared with heart........ it taste ok. It is a bit pricy on the quality of food but the service are great. Parking can be a challenge here but on their website they mention you can use the parking garage.
I came to this place with my friends. When we first came here, it was relatively new, as it was a soft opening. The food was great. They did not have many options available when we were there. The service from the staff and the owner was very friendly. The atmosphere was nice; I loved the decorations, and the music in the background was not too loud. Overall, I recommend coming to try it if you like Yakitori.
Great location and good fresh food.
Great services and amazing food
Highly recommended
Good service with decent food, but kinda wish there is more bbq items on the menu
The price is too expensive. Two people basically didn t order anything and it cost 150 plus tax and tip. The price would be acceptable if the food was excellent or there was something you couldnt get in other restaurants, but that was obviously not the case. The Lantern was just average, and the impression I had was completely different. The chicken skewers were overcooked. Very disappointed. I prefer the one in J-Town. I personally feel that both the portion and the taste are better.
It s a new restaurant in this area. We arrived around 2:15pm, the waiter said they are closing at 3pm. But he still let us in. The food are fresh prepared and came out fast. We finished our meal around 2:45. Definitely coming back again!
Delicious and great service. I enjoyed the alcohol selection and the fresh meat selections. Get the uni rice bowl
Nice vibe along with good food to share with friends. I recommend coming after visiting downtown Unionville for some good food.
The best Japanese Yakitori restaurant ever!!!We have a wonderful and unforgettable experience with them. The food is top quality, yummy, and delicious. The customer service is really perfect, the servers full of smells. Recently, we had the pleasure of celebrating a friends birthday amidst the restaurants elegant ambiance, where we were pleasantly surprised with complimentary cheesecake. Needless to say, our hearts brimmed with joy, making it an unforgettable experience. Truly, this establishment is not only ideal for romantic rendezvous but also for joyous celebrations. Highly recommended!!!! If you like Yakitori Parking: Free parking in the neighborhood
Celebrating a birthday with my sisters at Sumoki was a great experience! Every dish of the food is delicious and nothing is too bad! The servers service is also great! They also thoughtfully prepared small cakes! A very good experience! Will definitely come again! ! !
When we called to make a reservation one day in advance, we found that the front desk had not only remembered the wrong name but also the wrong mobile phone number (not a simple mistake, but the kind where three waiters searched together and couldnt find it), which led to us being at the door. After wasting a while, I even thought we didn t have an appointment. After we went in and sat down, we scanned the QR code and ordered the food and placed the order. We even placed an additional order after placing the order. After waiting for half an hour, even the drinks were not served. When we asked the waiter, he said that the system did not receive our order at all twice. All The waiters attitude was no problem and very good. The food itself was pretty good and the food was served very quickly. It was just the incident during the entrance and the problem with the ordering system that it took us about 40 minutes to get something to eat. These really deducted my impression of this store... I hope the boss can pay more attention to improvement:)
My wife and I had a great dinner experience! We particularly enjoyed the Premium Set and Wagyu Gyoza. We also had the baby octopus, sumoki set, tsukune, buta don, and liver; all of which were pretty good too. What would bring us back here would definitely be the customer service, which was phenomenal; the wait staff are so kind and attentive.
Just off Unionville, this place is in my top 3 places to eat in the city. I especially like that this place is a dinner only restaurant.
Food was amazing and reminded us of a recent trip to Japan as they serve dishes we dont see in the usual Japanese restaurants in Toronto. First time for matcha beer! Its cash only just like many restaurants in Japan.
Was excited to try this yakitori bar that recently opened. Unagi was perfectly grilled and the sauce was fantastic. Mentaiko carbonara udon was also nice and creamy. Sumoki wings were very crispy and saucy. However, we found the sumoki set to be underwhelming. Negima was the best one in the set. Parking: Has a handful of indoor parking available for retail customers in the building. Parking meter was disabled when we went.
A good date spot, great service and good meat. but feels a bit over priced for the size of skewers you get. Definitely would recommend the sumoki wings.
Locally speaking, I think this is a decent spot for yakitori in the Markham region as there really is nothing there but Chinese food. However, non locally speaking, its far from what yakitori should be. Try going a bit further to Izakaya Ju or Zakkushi. Youll be pleasantly surprised at the difference. Though I give them A for effort, the items ordered didnt have a charcoal looking burn to the as they should. Most items seemed like they were just bbqd with propane heat not charcoal. Hence a 3 for food. Given its price range, I have to compare with Zakkushi. A staple for yakitori. Since Sumoki is priced the same. I would expect nothing less. I definitely wont be coming back. Sadly. Unless the prices drop a bit or their quality goes up. The only item that did taste great was the chicken cartilage. Very nicely crisped. Sadly. Nothing remarkable to say. Great space and decor though.
The skewers lacked saltiness. The sea urchin rice was a bit fishy. The chicken liver pate had a bloody smell. The cocktails were good. Food : 1/5 |
Food was decent but nothing overly special. Some of the unique items were cool though. Overall the place was smoky but thats to be expected from a yakitori place, though it would benefit from extra ventilation. Ordering system using your phone and their website was a little confusing and clunky, it could be improved; it was also not explained by the staff and the staff were almost impossible to flag down.
excellent attentive service; comfortable seating and atmosphere a bit disappointing on the skewers less sodium is a good thing actually can taste the meat aroma itself somehow u still to marinate a bit; final products may sprinkle some salt and brush oil or butter; the chicken harry and liver skewers r dry and not tasty. the best one i would say the beef tongue; chicken meat and chicken thigh are average: the udon is good but not onsen tamago egg; a bit over price if no meat in it. not charcoal bbq lack of smoky burnt aromas sorry for the honest comments. i m sure can be improved ; a la cart 2 person for $80 share w 7 skewers and one udon
They re still trying to refine their menu with their continuous soft opening at this team. I would say the food is quite tasty and yummy. It s a very nice establishment and situated very close to Main Street unionville and I think this is why the pricing also reflects. I don t want to take away about how tasty the food was and an interesting skewer with shiso around the meat but it s pretty pricy. Wish their skewers came with at least 2-3 skewers. The chicken liver mousse dish was served with sweet milk bread, a bit off not for my palate so was a bit of a shock. Only tried a few items so wasn t full but for all the picture taken they was about $30 per person.
Very enjoyable atmosphere. I loved the ambient lighting, music, and decor. The food was quite impressive! Although portions were small, the quality was amazing.
Very disappointing food for the price. Overcooked, under seasoned skewers, dry scallops, egg shell in my rice.
Beautiful environment, good taste! The barbecue is really delicious! Good service attitude! Suitable environment suitable music is more suitable for my appetite! Im a repeat customer! I love the food here! Tools available first-class service! The staff here is very warm and helpful! This is sumoki! Ill come back next time! Wait for us
Good experience
Good service a food quality. Fresh ingredients and staffs are very atentive. Parking: Free parking in the condo Food : 5/5 |
Attentive service and great atmosphere. One star off for food because some dishes came warm not hot. Also we found certain yakitori was particularly salty. Oh well, that was good with some beers :)
First time in this restaurant, let me tell you, it does not disappoint. Everything from the service to the food was outstanding. highly recommend
We had dinner plans however the place we intended to eat at was closed unexpectedly, so we ended up visiting Sumoki as it was close by. I am so glad we found this place! Atmosphere and ambiance was very calm, modern Japanese & clean. I really liked the vibe. Service was minimal as everything is done through your phone. Food came out promptly , but if you need something you have to wait for someone to bring your food to the table to get a hold of someone. Ordered : Purple sweet potato Wagyu gyoza Takoyaki King mushroom Yaki onigiri Momo yakitori Breast w/ wasabi Negima yakitori Everything was really good and cooked to perfection. My favorite was the yaki onigiri and the momo skewer. Overall I do recommend this restaurant. Note: parking out front is minimal but you are able to park in the condo visitors section attached to the restaurant you just park in the underground and tell the security guard that you are visiting sumoki and they let you in & out. There is no fee for the parking.
Nice atmosphere, attentive service, skewers were not served hot, and didnt smell like charcoal grilled, a bit over priced, free parking available but was confusing
The skewers were great! I recommend the wasabi and chicken skewers, and the pork belly skewers! Atmosphere in the small restaurant has nice vibes
Very patient server helped us a lot
It s easy to find ~ the environment is also very good ~ the lanterns are sold out this time I hope I can eat lanterns next time
Great Yakitori restaurant soft opened at the heart of Unionville Markham. Fantastic atmosphere and high quality of food. Nice and friendly staffs who make you feel welcomed through the whole experience. Highly recommended!
I want my valentine gift please.
Every skewer came out speedy and sizzling hot. All the staff were attentive so I was particularly impressed by the service. Ambiance is more cozy and modern compared to the other general yakitori places in Toronto. Celebrating Valentines Day, they even surprised guests with a rose :)
This is an amazing place for friends and family gathering. Staff are super friendly and happy. I love coming here for their food and drinks. Highly recommended!
This is a new place. Food quality is too notch. Meat is tender. Veggie is fresh. Drinks are tasty. Atomsphere is perfect for Valentines Day.
The don and brussel sprouts was fantastic, the lobster dish was very very salty and the skewers were just okay. But the service and atmosphere is amazing.
Sushi. Ramen, Don and Yakitori (Japanes chicken showers) are the common food available in Tokyo. Yakitori restaurants are so common around Kinshicho JR station in Tokyo. When I arrived at Sumoki, that smoky aroma is similar to the ones in Kinshicho. I am really impressed. All of our orders are having the charcoal grilled. This favour is surrounding all the shewers. We especially appeal by Momo, Negima, Wing Tebasaki, Beef Tongue and Enoki Mushrrom Pork Maki. The main dishes are Mentaiko Carbonara Udon is really tasty. We will definitely visit this bar asap.
Food was good. Atmosphere was nice. Service was very attentive. Good place to eat in Markham.
Good food and service. The size of each skewer was satisfactory compared to other places, so it makes up for the prices. Most things arrived nice and hot from the kitchen. Would come again.
I saw this new yakitori bar and had to try it. I went for lunch and it wasn t too busy as it was soft launch. Food was on the pricier side. We ended up trying the creamy udon and some skewers. The udon took a long time to come out. Music was quite random with pop being played, then jazz, then lofi, then K-pop. Udon was ok, skewers were good. I liked that they served warm water.
Sumoki exceeded expectations with delectable dishes, charming decor, friendly staff, and swift service. A delightful dining experience! I recommend their metakai carbonara udon and tsukune chicken skewer! It s a nice place to chill with friends.
Finally a place where you can drink and chat and have delicious skewers suitable for Asian tastes. The atmosphere is good and the service is very nice. I will come again!
Overall 2/5 The food is very disappointed in menu the yakitori is grilled over imported Binchotan. Unfortunately the yakitori I can taste is your deep fried oil with a bit charcoal smell. The Yakionigiri is DISGUSTING and oily because the chef is so damn lazy just put onigiri into deep fryer make it crisp and finish on the grill. This place is recently opened and is not full house, already start doing lazy method and cutting corner what a embarrassment. The only food the LAZY CHEF execute properly is veggie yakitori because cant use the deep fryer. In service is good and friendly. The question is will I return the answer is NO
Authentic Japanese Cuisine from beginning to finish, a WONDERFUL experience! Loved every single bite of their traditional Japanese skewers along with the main dishes. Great atmosphere to bring your family or friends together. All the staffs working there were really nice and very polite. They have a significant number of parking spots which is nice. This is a place that is definitely worth visiting!
Overprice, lack of choose
Good service, good atmosphere, delicious food, just missing a little more food choice .
Amazing vibes. Skewers were perfect everytime. A little pricey but worth it for one of the best dining experiences in Markham.
Sumoki is truly a gem of Markham. Tasty food, perfect atmosphere, and immaculate service. Alfonso has created something special in Markham that scratches my itch for izakayas.
Sumoki is a wonderful yakitori restaurant in the heart of Old Unionville. One of the most authentic yakitori restaurants that I have eaten at, with high-quality skewers, drinks, an extensive and ever improving menu, and top notch service. A definite recommend for anyone wanting a genuine izakaya experience in Markham.
