143 Mont-Royal Ave E, Montreal, Quebec H2T 1N9, Canada
hip,cozy japanese spot. sashimi,noodle & sake
Food was very good (esp. the nigiri, really well done), but ridiculously overpriced.
Highly recommend! You might passed by a few times and missed it, the same as we did (part of its magic). But the moment we noticed it, we had to try. The first thing is that when you come in you smell, and the smell in this restaurant is so tasty.. that you can’t wait to try ;) Everything was delicious and very fresh! ( make a reservation, the restaurant is quite small and gets really busy)
Wow. Came for lunch and were seated right away Actually insane meal, every flavor was absolutely rich and wonderful Me and my sister shared the Chirashi, salade de pieuvre, croquettes, and mushroom pasta and was the perfect amount of food. Came to $100+ $20tip The croquettes and the mushroom pasta were the absolute stars but everything was delish Great atmosphere and music, cozy vibes Super attentive and timely service by our British waiter Literally loved every aspect of this meal and restaurant, no complaints Will be coming back :)
Ridiculously delicious. First, it is a small, intimate setting with such good energy and service. I was lucky to rest here without a reservation. I ordered the duck mazeman and it was like fried chicken with delicious dry noodles and ufff it was just so good. There was a waiter and a cook for the whole restaurant and they both did their thing! I had to tip above 20% Really really so so so so so good! Also, the music was good. Just really caring and cautious with the service. I can't recommend enough.
Very cozy and small restaurant with a chill vibe. Service was on the slower side as there was only one waiter. The food was however pretty good. My favourite dishes were the duck mazeman and the crab mazeman. The duck was very crispy and fall off the bone tender. The noodles mixed with the egg made it very rich and delicious. The crab mazeman had a hint of spicy and the ikura complimented the dish well. It tasted very seafoody and it was a generous portion of crab. Was dissaponted with the chicken wings as it tasted pretty bland (special of the week). The Brussels sprouts were good but nothing out of the ordinary. Would come again for the mazeman and to try out their chirashi.
Oh my goodness, let me just tell you about my experience at this restaurant! So, I went there with a friend for the first time on Tuesday, and it was absolutely incredible. We were greeted by Sam, who made us feel so welcome. He recommended this delicious blond Japanese imported beer for me, and my friend had Sake, and let me tell you, they paired perfectly with everything we ordered. Speaking of the food, it was out of this world. We had the Tako Salad, Uni and bone marrow mezamen, the snow crab mezamen, and the Shoyu Ramen. Each dish was so exciting and incredibly delicious. The ingredients were all perfectly balanced and you could really taste each individual flavor. And let's talk about the ambiance - the musique, vibe, and overall ambiance were just spot on. It felt like I was visiting a dear friend. The service was impeccable, and I felt so at ease. As someone who's a bit of an introvert and can be shy, it's not always easy for me to feel comfortable everywhere, but this place just had such a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Now, here's the best part - I loved it so much that I went back solo on Thursday. I actually booked a table just an hour after I left on Tuesday, that's how much I was daydreaming about going back. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. This time, I sat at the bar and had the pleasure of chatting with the person sitting next to me. He had actually traveled all the way from the Laurentide just to dine here, and I totally get why. It's just that amazing. So yeah, needless to say, I'm one happy customer and I can't wait to go back again and again.
I was very excited to come here as they seemed to have a creative menu with rare ingredients such as hotaru ika. Unfortunately the night I dined there, they were not offering anything on the special menu... I ended up getting the maguro futomaki and cheese croquette with ikura at the suggestion of the server. The futomaki was pretty filling and had generous portions of aka and toro. It was good but I felt it was carried more by the freshness of the fish rather than the technique of the chef. I would have also liked for it to not come pre-seasoned with soy sauce and wasabi as I like to adjust those to my own personal preference. The croquette wasn't bad, but was leaning towards a salty profile because of the ikura. It felt more like eating mozzarella cheese sticks to be honest. At the price point, I was expecting to be wowed more. The restaurant was decked out in cool Showa-era decor but something that didn't make me feel too comfortable was how dark it was. I would have preferred dim lighting, but it seemed like the lights weren't even turned on! It gave the interior a really dark look, and not even in the nice moody way. From the outside, it didn't even look like the restaurant was open. Service could also be better. I know it was just one person manning the counter, but it felt like I only got his attention when I asked for it. Sitting at the bar counter alone, I was also expecting more engagement. I've been visiting as many mid/upper-tier Japanese restaurants in Montreal as I can and this one has disappointed me the most so far.
This is really a special restaurant. I recommend all of my friends to try this. I have never been to Japan but if I had to guess, this would be just like being there. The chef is amazing and the dishes that he comes up with are creatively delicious. The pictures are from two separate dinners and it’s really hard to pick a favourite when everything tastes exquisite. It’s a whole other level! Thank you 🙏
Impeccable
Absolutely delicious and very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere! I was afraid that the chirashi would be too small but not at all, the small bowl is very very generous, especially with fish. Great experience!!!
It was good but it didnt make an impression on us unfortunately. Were going to go back there.
Japanese restaurant which is a change from izakayas. Ramen specialty without broth, to try! Good sake choices.
Ridiculously small matcha for the price. But hes good.
The ramen at lunch was great
Nice restaurant. Delicious dishes and sake. Great place for date night.
If you havent been, you dont know what youre missing
The food was definitely good and may be worth (or not) the premium you pay. The ingredients that were used were of the utmost quality but the portions are just way too small. I would have to think that spending 80$ per person (no alcohol) would allow you to at least walk out of there content and not going straight to the sandwich joint 2-3 corners further.
Delish! The duck confit was amazing. Chirashi was so good and so fresh. We walked right past the restaurant when looking for it. Its easy to miss. Its very homey and unassuming. Highly recommend the amazing food..
Amazing food and the waiter was nice !
Everything was delicious and the place feels very authentic!! Loved the atmosphere and had a great night.
Highly recommend, the chef is so focused, seeks exceptional excellence in everything he does. A must try.
My best Japanese restaurant in Montreal. The tuna is amazing. If I could, I would eat this every day. Dedication for the Maguro don
A cute little place that Ive passed by a dozen times on Mont Royal and never noticed, until a friend in the neighbourhood said we had to try it, his favorite Japanese restaurant in Montreal. We had the sashimi for two (very fresh and tasty, although a little lacking on presentation), and the brussel sprouts smothered (in a good way) in a soy-balsamic sauce. Then we had the wild boar mapo-tofu, very good although the portions were small. Having a little more atmosphere and a friendlier vibe would contribute a lot to this place.
Very nice little restaurant on Mont-Royal Avenue. Exceptional food, including a scallop that I will remember for the rest of my life. Nice selection of sake and good advice from our waitress. Dont forget to book in advance, because its always full.
The best Japanese restaurant in Montreal. Thats it. Thats the review!!!!! Reservation absolutely recommended in the evening because the restaurant is very busy but it is possible to come and enjoy lunch without reservation. I absolutely recommend and would come back
A hidden gem - Small restaurant with amazing, unique dishes. Loved the octopus salad and the Japanese curry.
The best meal I had in Montreal. We couldnt get reservations online so showed up when they opened and were able to get seats, it filled up soon after. We got the ramen, curry and a salad and even though it sounds simple, the flavors were so balanced and delicious. Its not a super fancy place but the quality of the ingredients and food was on par with or better than a lot of fine dining places. So happy to have tried this place!
Ramen, rice, fish, sake, everything is absolutely prepared to perfection.
Next level Japanese cuisine. If you want reference grade ramen, Netflix worthy sushi, or wonderful service, go here
Food tasted nice, but nothing amazing found the service was a bit slow but that was because there was only one person working the kitchen .
Fresh & simply delicious! I absolutely love everything about this dish and so happy to try it! I took the maguro don
Lots of love in the dishes
Food was definitely unique & the vibe of the restaurant was nice. However, I feel that, at this price point, service was lacking (we stood around for a fair while before being seated; water wasnt refilled until we asked; no tissue to dry hands in the toilets). I unfortunately wouldnt return, though its still an experience.
This is in my Top 3 favorite restaurants in Montreal. I can just go here and chill, grab my favorite ramen (Ikura Mazimen) and a Shrimp Burger with Japanese Sea Urchin sauce. I ve tried most things on the menu and they re all good, but those 2 are my favorite. Can t go wrong with any of the deserts either from the sorbet to the chocolate ice cream to the cookie to the thai black tea ice cream last time I literally got both ice creams and the chocolate chip cookie I was dipping the cookie in both ice creams and enjoying them. Hiroshi is a fantastic chef, one of a kind. I pretty much feel like I m going to a friend s house and they re just cooking me up whatever they have in the kitchen. Alongside Moccione, this is my fav restaurant.
Ive been wanting to discover this restaurant for a long time! 2 of us went there and we ate well! We were seated at the bar overlooking the kitchen. I had a hotaru ika mazemen which was very good! I had never seen or eaten hotaru ika, it was an excellent surprise. We also had sashimi as a starter and... to die for! An excellent experience!
Mazemen, delicious.
A lovely meal of outstanding dishes. My new favorite restaurant!
Sooooo expensive. Restaurants in Montreal need to consider their price list if they dont want local people to stop going out. Unless this restaurant targets tourists who are willing to pay 20$ for 3 sushi s. But Ill definitely pass.
The food was incredible. We had the cod croquette, maguro don, duck mazemen and pudding with a bit of sake. Everything was delicious, better than any croquette, duck or tuna weve ever had before. I just cant possibly emphasize enough how much I recommend it. The atmosphere was nice, pretty chill, the tables were quite close to each other but its pretty common in such restaurants. No loud music which we really appreciated. The service was nice although they lacked professionalism. For example, theyll let you wait more than 10min (without apologizing for the wait) if youre polite and wait in the entrance to get seated, even if they saw you. I learnt from the people who came after us that you have to come in & stand in the middle of the way, only then will they happily seat you right away..
My new go to spot for sushi and to get my Authentic Japanese fix whenever I need it. Honestly everything has always been amazing.
Really average coffee especially considering the setup.
This is the definition of food for the soul. Off menu recommendation (but not always available): bone marrow and sea urchin noodles. Oh my goodness... My mouth is watering just remembering it. If you come for supper I highly recommend the mapo tofu.
I was absolutely blown away by the food - worth every penny. Cant wait to go back
Highly recommend the chirashi
This is the real Japanese food that Japanese people think of, and an impressive restaurant that is proud of Japanese culture. The fried chicken is the best in Montreal, and the smooth pudding is also amazing. The presentation, the quality of the sashimi, and the freshness made me feel Japanese delicacy for the first time in a while. If you want to eat rice without drinking alcohol, ramen and rice bowls are the perfect size (its a bit disappointing that the amount of rice is so small) Definitely in the top 3 for Japanese food in Montreal
If I was living closer, this would be my canteen. Fresh, delicious and authentic Japanese food. Don t miss out on the custard pudding. Service is discreet and efficient.
This is a simple establishment focused on the food where the food has never disappointed. A creative Japanese menu with the highest fish quality. One person cooking, one person serving. The fried foods are perfect, the beer is as it should be--served in frosted glasses--and the sake list is of interest.
Memorable Japanese experience in a low-key setting, provided by a highly skilled Chef. The quality of the ingredients is top notch. Everything was on-point. Can t wait to try more items on the menu!
The Niku, just the Niku, just the Niku! Best comfort meal of my weeks, especially with the cold! Love it Well the service, the setting, and everything else are great too... but the NIKU!!!
Great place to eat, amazing atmosphere and service ! The food was delicious, highly recommend. Food
Fresh ingredients, great little list of wines by the glass, contemporary take on Izakaya fare. Loved it! All with soft Jazz playing in the background. And this was lunch. Go or order takeout!
A very nice little place, although we were not seated very comfortably, the rest was so good that it is a very negligible aspect. Big favorite with the buratta, which is noodles with lobster butter.
We love that place! Nice and cozie the food is delicious the service is friendly. We had the Brussels sprouts plate for 2 of sashimi the tuna and the lobster ramen!! Every single plate was AMA. Highly recommended it!
I was so impressed by the food: not only fresh but also creative, original and utterly delicious! We ate too much because we really wanted to taste as much as we could. The sake selection was also magnificent . Sam, our server, provided excellent service and recommandations . He was as flawless as the food ! Thanks for the amazing experience,we will come back.
This story begins with a reservation gone awry. I had booked dinner for two on a cozy winters night only to be turned down at the door as we were two weeks early for our reservation and they were fully booked. I felt defeated and walked out hungry and full of shame for booking the wrong date. Tara told me to chill and reminded me how much more satisfying it would be two weeks from now when we would finally get to dine at the bar. Needless to say, and as per usual I must add, she was right. Let s get this out of the way, the food is exceptional. Chef Hiroshi orchestrates a symphony in the kitchen by sourcing top quality ingredients and the freshest of fish and channeling it into a menu built on layers of technique, tradition, unconventional risks, and loads of passion. Dom greets you at the front of house with a warm and welcoming smile, inspiring knowledge and anecdotes about the ingredients used, cooking techniques, and hand picked imported sake and wine selections. Let me clarify something. This was a two person operation. They do everything during the two seatings of 20 covers per night and they do it well. This was one of the most enjoyable dinning experiences I ve had in quite a long time. The nigiri wet our appetites, select fresh fish sliced and placed on beds of perfectly made rice offset by the pickled vegetables we ordered. Next was the the lobster mazemen which is a truly outstanding dish. We also had the A++ brussel sprouts, prawn spring rolls, beef and pork curry, and finished off with some melt in your mouth toro for dessert. I hadn t been to the bistro in a couple of years and I m glad to report that it s better than ever. Thanks for the wonderful evening. I won t be a stranger again as I m already planning a return visit to try everything else on the menu.
Excellent !!
Rating so I remember to try it. Is this place affiliated with otto s in Toronto?
I went for lunch this afternoon. The food was spectacular. I had the assorted sashimi and the ramen. I would order both again! I will definitely be back on my next trip to Montreal.
Authentic. Love it. Definitely one of the best Japanese food outside of Japan. But also delicious fusion. AMAZING!!! thank you !
Great service, mazemen was delicious
A little gem in plateau, food was amazing, fish is very fresh and service is awesome, they have new dishes every time so I asked if they still have a crudo that I had before and I really liked, it was not on the menu anymore but the Chef suggested to make it for me, it made the experience even better!!
The Duck Confit was mind blowing, the noodles were so so creamy. Great service. Love that place.
This small and quaint Japanese restaurant offers an authentic and high-quality dining experience. The Nigiri and Uni were spectacular, with melt-in-your-mouth toro and delicate and sweet Uni from Japan. The pickled vegetables were a refreshing start to the meal, while the ramen and brussel sprouts were hearty and delicious. The quality of the ingredients was evident in every dish, with a deep respect for the natural flavors and textures. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the service was top-notch. Overall, this restaurant is a must-visit for anyone looking for exceptional Japanese cuisine.
Exceptionnally tasty and delicious! Very small and cozy but amazing service and wonderful flavors.
This place is simply a full 5-stars. Food is fantastic, super tasty, and feels very, very home made. Ingredients also have this extra high quality feel and gustative experience overall gives the impression that the cook cuts no end with food quality. I cannot recommend it more.
After seeing the reviews here, I had high expectations. I m giving 4 stars for the great service and ambience and the freshness of the ingredients. However, I spend 120$ for 2 and I came out of the restaurant hungry. Portions are just incredibly small for their price.
The best chicken, fish and clam broth Ive ever tasted!
Amazing quality food. I had the wagyu Ramen and the sashimi platter and it was extremely high quality food. The flavors you taste are out of this world and you can tell how much effort and time is put into making the food.
Exactly what the Dr ordered! Youll never know what life throws at you and sometimes it will be the absolute PITS but regardless highly recommend the daily specials and just say yes to a bottle of sake!
Fresh, delicious, will definitely come back
This place deserves six stars.
What a meal! Sashimi and Masamen were fantastic and so was dessert. Great service and food! Stop reading and reserve a spot!
This place really doesn t look like much from the outside, the interior is also quite small. The food was however interesting and of very good quality. Most items are tapas size, so the price can add up quickly. Had salmon sashimi, firefly squid, Brussels sprouts, chicken broth ramen, Kaluga Queen caviar on rice, pudding and plum sorbet for dessert. Our favourite item was surprisingly the Brussels sprouts. They were so so good!
Wagyu mazemen and Uni carbonara was so good. tapas style, really small portions. Service was ok.
So the food here is quite good for Japanese /fish standard in Montreal. Its really expensive however and the service is cold. A really small bowl of chirashi and a glass of sake is $60! The waiter always seems is a bit cold when I go or I just dont feel that welcome ordering from him. I definitely feel like he doesnt want to serve you in English. I go here once in a blue moon when I have a craving for sashimi. But all in all its only Ok place to go.
First time staying in Mont Royal here in Montréal and I could not rave more about my amazing experience at this restaurant. The fish was absolutely fresh and the Mapo tofu definitely topped off my experience. Service was also great, although the restaurant is on the smaller side so I recommend making a reservation in advance. :) compliments to the chef! Thank you, we will return!
Food is so good. Fish is always fresh plus friendly service ! Love the open kitchen concept. The plates show how passionate the chef is. Prices are reasonable, not extravagant for the quality of ingredients. Get the chirashi and the brussel sprouts.
Oh my goodness what a place is this? It was some of the most clean and fresh sushi I had in Montreal I highly recommend this place the waiter is very nice and helpful the food is absolutely amazing Yes, it is a bit on the pricey side, but sometimes you have to pay for good things!!
Very fine cuisine, great choice of fish, the mazemen (pasta) with small squid in particular are exquisite. Nice choice of sake (the unfiltered sake is interesting) and beers. Very friendly service! A little gem!
Excellent place with really good food and great service. The place is quiet, the person gives you great advice and the dishes are really prepared. In addition, the prices remain very reasonable. Congratulations
Original and delicious dishes, impeccable service. A restaurant to absolutely visit.
Just too crazy in the mouth
One of the best spots in town! Authentic Japanese experience with the most welcoming waiter & chef. Visited Montreal for a week and went there twice! Super recommended
Small but very warm, we loved the experience. The chicken ramen and nikumiso noodles were delicious. We recommend!!
Wow! If you want an explosion of flavors this is the place to come. You are eating the art of Japanese cuisine! Amazing. Well done to the chef!!!!
The waitress is very nice and friendly. Carbonara uni is very small, not much uni Good portion of uni mazemen with bone marrow, but also not enough uni (compared to the picture from other client) Sashimi were fresh
Very good! Intimate place, there are few places. It is best to reserve. The food is excellent.
I ate here during the weekend for a special popup event. The food was reasonably priced, healthy, and home cooked style. Prices very fair for the large portions.
I (unfortunately) only ate here once together with my girlfriend and everything we had was excellent and authentic. From the very first dish of pickled vegetables I knew we were in for a treat. Thanks chef!
Chef Hiroshi served up some really delightful dishes. It was at once a delicious and tasty dish, yet felt so nostalgic as if I was eating a home cooked meal served with love. Dominique who was our sever was outstanding, warm and welcoming. What a fantastic dinner.
It s a really good restaurant. If they could offer natto and matcha dessert, that will be perfect.
Divine food, exceptional service. They were super accomodating of my 3yo and the Spicy Green noodles were exquisite. Right balance of textures and seasoning. Would definitely recommend!!!
Although I liked the vibe I think the execution of the uni mazemen could ve been much better. Nor did I find the chirashi all that tasty. Maybe it was just an off day
A true non-Americanized Japanese experience! The food is creative and delicious, the servers help you choose side dishes that go very well with the chosen dishes! Ive been there 3 times and I will absolutely go back!
This place is perfect. The music is good, the service impeccable and chef Hiroshis dishes are divine. Plus I love the decor!
You have the best bartender ever, I wish I can marry him but I cant because I´m already married... Amazing food, the cocktails are even better and the wine is really well selected.
We found this place last month when we drove to visit Montreal with our daughter and son in law, and were lucky enough to get a table as there had been a cancellation. Most amazing tuna sashimi and negitoro we have had in Canada. The others enjoyed their ramen dishes, and mapo tofu as well. And the miso soup. Loved the food so much we vowed to return to Montreal to come here again! I can say the tuna and scallop sashimi are still amazing, and my husband enjoyed the mapo tofu just as much this time. I tried the uni carbonara this time- very creamy and heavenly! We also had the Brussels sprouts which were super tasty. Very cozy place that has a lovely homely feel to it. Definitely remember to book or phone ahead to check as the place is popular.
Such great food in a small and cozy restaurant. The food is delicious and you can really feel like there was a lot of thought put in it. Creative and delicious.
food was excellent and the atmosphere was very cozy
I had an excellent mapo-tofu. The service was great. I highly recommend. Cathy. Paris
One of the best japanese restaurant in Montreal
20 stars if I could. One of the best meals I ve ever had in my life. Came for lunch and came back for dinner the same day. Ordered the: Niku noodles Mushroom noodles Sashimi for 2 Everything was incredible.
the price is crazy for the portion you have, you will spend 100-130$ per person and still not be satisfied. the food quality is nothing crazy, technique is mediocre. go to Kazu it is much better.
I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Yakitori event hosted at Kitano Shokudo last Saturday, and I must express my profound satisfaction with the entire experience. The culinary journey embarked upon that evening was characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to culinary excellence. Among the culinary offerings, the duck skewer notably stood out. Its preparation was a testament to the culinary teams mastery, rendering the duck tender and succulent while delivering a harmonious fusion of flavors. The karaage, an exemplar of Japanese cuisine, exhibited an exquisite balance between its impeccably crispy exterior and the moist, impeccably seasoned interior. The inclusion of a guinea fowl skewer showcased an adventurous spirit in the curation of the menu, which I found to be both commendable and rewarding. The unique qualities of guinea fowl were deftly highlighted through a skillful combination of grilling techniques and seasonings. The libation offerings were equally impressive, with an assortment of imported beers and meticulously crafted cocktails to complement the culinary journey. This thoughtful selection allowed patrons to elevate their dining experience with choices that harmonized effortlessly with the culinary palette presented. The ambiance, enhanced by a live DJ, bestowed a vibrant and dynamic aura to the evening. This sophisticated blend of music and conviviality significantly augmented the overall sensory engagement, distinguishing the event as an occasion of not only culinary exploration but also cultural enrichment. In summation, Kitano Shokudos Yakitori event showcased an unparalleled dedication to gastronomic artistry and a commitment to delivering an unforgettable dining encounter. This establishments fusion of culinary prowess, beverage selection, and ambiance orchestration renders it an exemplary destination for connoisseurs seeking an elevated epicurean rendezvous.
Kitano Shokudo is a beautiful quaint Japanese bistro in Plateau-Mont-Royal serving comforting Japanese fusion cuisine with the best quality ingredients. Authentic Tokyo style restaurant Honkaku-teki na T ky sutairu resutoran
The food is excellent and original. I was also lucky enough to get help from a particularly helpful and kind waiter. I warmly recommend!
A truly authentic Japanese experience in the heart of Plateau. Having been to Japan, we were pleasantly surprised by the food. The menu is not extensive with rotating dishes of the day. The staff is extremely friendly!
Amazing sashimi definitely top tier Do not plan to go there if you are starving you pay for the quality not the quantity ! Overall a great experience
We enjoyed our experience here. Food was authentic, fresh and tasty. Service was great. We also enjoyed the atmosphere, though we found the speakers a bit too loud to have a conversation in such a small place. Overall we recommand this place if youre looking for an authentic japanese restaurant !
Wild boar mapo-tofu was stellar. 5 stars across the board.
Best Japanese restaurant in town! The menu is ver well curated and all ofthe dishes are absolutely delicious. The quality of fish is perfect and their dishes with sea urchin are the most special. I really recommend this place Food
I hoped for a simple, comforting and filling Asian dinner at reasonable price, but sadly, it fell short. However, if you don t care about paying for overpriced food for the ´feel of hyped Japanese bistro vibe, Otto is your place. Two things I can t stand: 1. Poor customer service, especially when dining alone, especially strange for a Japanese place. No warm greeting, no here is your order or bon appétit when the food arrived just a drop-and-go approach. 2. The $24 mapo tofu dish ended up costing $30 after tax and tip, yet left me still hungry with its tiny portion. As a light eater, my stomach was only half full, and the ingredients were mostly tofu, rice, and a tiny bit of meat. The price felt ridiculously high. Watch out: The online menu is outdated, and prices shot up a lot.
Without a doubt some of the best Japanese food in Montreal.
Super good and affordable prices!
Good sushi is very very difficult to find in Montreal, but this place is definitely the exception. $22 for three prices of high quality toro, now that s unbelievable! Great prices for what they offer, and great service. Can t wait to try the other items on the list
I ve followed the chef Hiroshi Kitano on instagram for a while now, i actually have no memory of how i came across his page. Anyways, after a few months of mildly stalking his aesthetically pleasing japanese food related insta stories, i finally decided to book a res for this place. This was the most authentically japanese restaurant experience i ve had in North America, from the setup, the vibe, the menu options, the seating arrangements, the music. A to Z reminded me of the small artisan restaurants i ve loitered in japan. Seeing the synergy the 1 waiter had with the chef was masterful, it felt like a high crowd restaurant, and it actually took me a few minutes to realize there was no other staff. Just Hiroshi Kitano and the host. A teeny tiny kitchen, 3 or 4 burners, and a counter space smaller than the bar. This restaurant is meticulously crafted top to bottom. the restaurant is called kitano shokudo, translates to kitanos dining room, and it makes sense.Seriously, when we got seated we ended up getting sat at the bar, which in most restaurants im not super fond of, but having the opportunity to eat these dishes and see the chef in a masterful flow was cinema (sorry if you felt like i was staring at you). We mostly got dishes from the daily specials, we tried the Shiro Miso Cod Croquettes, the Tako & Onion salad, and the shoyu ramen. The croquettes were INCREDIBLE. Beautiful GBD exterior, with the softest creamiest potato inside with little chunks of a very flavourful cod, and the garlicky-buttery miso sauce was actually bonkers The salad was so good, huge chunks of octopus with a zesty refreshing dressing, big chunks of onion that were just sweet enough and just strong enough, with some herbs mixed in. Very refreshing The ramen . i m extremely picky about ramen, not that i don t like it or anything, i just think finding good ramen in canada is pretty hard. But wow we split a bowl of the shoyu duck ramen and it was wonderful. Perfectly cooked noodles, great choice of toppings and perfectly cooked duck. However. the broth the broth??? This is what annoys me the most about ramen here, the broth is never right? but man holy sh**, this guy knows his stuff. I m not a big shoyu guy, i normally like tonkotsu more, the most recent place i ve had shoyu was in Arashiyama before seeing the monkeys. This broth was better. That s all i gotta say. They know their stuff here. Also, i came here with my partner, and we split pretty much everything, and the host was smart enough to pick up on that and split the ramen into 2 smaller bowls for us, so that was extremely appreciated. That s the kind of attention that really makes you realize they care. I ve noticed some of the reviews mention being treated coldly by the staff, which i personally didn t experience, but seeing how in-the-zone these two are, you gotta understand we re not here to chit chat capiche? this is serious business Anyways we only tried 3 dishes as we weren t insanely hungry, but now, i kinda regret it. Seriously, this place is a work of art. Go to the bar, order a few yummy things, and just watch this guy cook. It feels like watching Whiplash but instead of drums it s a big pot of oil and tempura croquettes. This place rules
Fantastic place. Love the ambience in this cute and small restaurant, the service is excellent and thoughtful and the food is always on point. We have been there a few time and I was never disappointed. This place is now my favorite in the neighborhood.
Montréal No.1 Shrimp burger !!!! Its a big burger so you will satisfy. It is ultra-tasty and a little bit spicy I love it You need to T R Y * (* *) *
Best authentic sushi in Montreal! Hiroshi is an amazing chef!!
Very good, very fine and quality dishes, perfect portion and very good sake menu (dry or fruity)! Very affordable price for very good quality, and very warm service, not to be missed!
This place is BUSSIN. Best Japanese food ever, the Mazemen was to die for. Everything is super savoury and fresh. We had to wait a bit to be seated but the waiter gave us some shots to thank us for our wait. Staff is super friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better. The decor and place is very cozy. All in all, a great experience, 10/10.
The chirashi is amazing! Likely the best in Montréal!
A little expensive, but worth it
Pure delight, very friendly staff and warm atmosphere.
The food and value for money are excellent! The atmosphere is warm, the staff super friendly, definitely an address I will return to!
Highly recommend. The Mazemen is delicious!
We asked for a menu for 2 and the chef concocted a personalized one (2 dishes are missing though) but it was exquisite ! Pricy but worth it. The quality of the food was incredible especially raw fish
Six stars if I could. This place is absolutely perfect. Every. Time. Everything on the menu is unique and fresh and delicious. One of the best restaurants in Montreal. Come here if you want to meet a Japanese food artist, and if you want to have a good time!
Flawless
Magnificent chirashi and tasty miso soup. Delicious shrimp burger. It makes me want to try the entire menu!
Everything is excellent!! Scallop ceviche Chicken karrage and sashimi of course Even cheese cake and orange wine. The only problem is the price, since it s still quite expensive for small portions, but it s worth it
Otto is not inexpensive, a solid dinner with decent Saki here will run you $120-$150 a person (w tip, ap-main-desert-alcohol). That said some of the most delicious plates I have had in a long while. Sashimi was fresh and melt in your mouth, duck ramen was out.of.this.world. The space is small, unpretentious and staff is friendly and attentive. If you want to treat yourself to a great meal, and are willing to pay for it this place will not disappoint. I am giving it 4/5 stars because it is still a bit on the pricy side, however I would go back!
I would say this is definitely one of the top Japanese restaurant you can find in Montreal. Although it is not a sushi restaurant, the sashimi is splendid. The chu-toro and scallop were amazing. Sashimi that can melt in your mouth is not easy to find. Also loved the liver sauce for the sashimi. I also ordered the mazemen with bone marrow and sea urchin (uni). It is so flavorful and the bone marrow is buttery and go well with the noodle. Though some may consider it too oily because of the bone marrow. Order it if you enjoy something buttery. The uni itself also tasted very nice and not bitter but it doesnt really go hand in hand with the mazemen because the buttery taste of the mazemen is already quite strong. The cheesecake was alright and not much surprise compared to the other dish. It was just a bit expensive. The staff was really nice and attentive. You could expect a nice environment and a delicious dinner. But as usual, if you are going for fresh sashimi, the price can be a bit high. Though I would say is worth it.
Great restaurant
The service was excellent, our waitress was super friendly and helpful. The food was absolutely amazing, very fresh and you could tell everything was made from scratch and with care. Very pleasant Japanese decor, the overall experience felt really authentic and we will definitely be coming back to try more.
Excellent service and some of the best dishes we ve ever had. Sashimi that s buttery soft. And main dishes with such deep flavor. The umi carbonara so good. Would absolutely go again and recommend to anyone who s lucky enough to snag a table at this cozy bistro.
Sorry folks I didnt have it in me to take photos the food smelled too good to delay. Ill try the second time around but this place was ridiculously good. We had the Uni carbonara, duck confit and lemme tell ya, it rocked my palette. Il definitely be back here to try everything on their menu. Their ambience and service is also very authentic. Highly recommend if youre in the area or simply down to try some good eats. Price point may look high but its #worth. Suggest reserving because it got packed fairly quickly. God speed foodies. P.S try their desserts
A hidden gem in the plateau area! Very impressed with the quality and freshness of the food. Hats off to the chef, Hiroshi, for this culinary experience! The A5 wagyu mazemen was my favourite. I also want to mention the amazing service from Dominique. She was very welcoming and informative. Definitely will be back. Ps - call in advance to book a reservation, the place is small so it gets filled up quickly.
I ve been back to Bistro Otto probably 15 times and Chef Hiroshi just never disappoints. The mazemen is a classic (10/10) but if you want to adventure a bit, you can ask for an Omakase! Every single dish he has done so far has been amazing.
Wow!! Although there are only two employees in this restaurant (the chef and the table host/waitress), we offer warm and impeccable service! The iron fruits and fish are delicious and the mazemen are so tasty! I cant wait to come back one day! ------ Wow!! Despite there being only two people running the show (the chef and the hostess/waitress), the service was really warm and impeccable! The seafood/fish there is delicious and the mazemen is so tasty! I cant wait to come back one day!
It was excellent. Best Ramen in Montreal
Good food, good music, very creative dishes. Service was a bit slow so budget about an hour and a half time wise. The wild boar mapo tofu could use more a bit more meat and the Otto ramen a bit less salt. But overall we enjoyed the food and the decor and the music.
lovely atmosphere and decor. small and quiet place to catch up with friends. portions are big and food is EXCELLENT. had incredibly delicious plates.
Really good fresh sushi and sashimi. We had come in after a rainy day and had a blast with tasting their miso soup, sashimi of the day, and Ramen bowl. The Chirashi bowl was a stand out as well!
Very unique taste and delicious plates. Menu has tons of good and different options. The sorbets at the end were top.
That ramen tho
Best place I went to in Montréal, the duck confit ramen was v different but I keep thinking about it ever since hahah, and our server was so nice and helpful
When you set foot in the restaurant, you immediately understand why the tables sell out quickly: the space is rather intimate! Im not complaining, far from it. We are never annoyed by the ambient noise, nor by the music which suits the bistro well. If the place already stands out for its up-to-date interior, it is through its dishes that Otto Bistro takes off. A true adventure of flavors awaits you. Among the starters, the chicken karaage and zuke maguro (marinated bluefin tuna) were unanimous. Mazemen, culinary masterpieces, must appear on your order book! Among our preferences, we find the Candied duck leg and the Uni Carbonara . The mushroom is also a very good choice. Only one server, friendly and playful, is present. So the service is slower, but the food doesnt take long to arrive. I wish Otto Bistro long life and prosperity. Jheeeeeez. This place is incredible. The atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant is very chill and cozy. The food is absolutely insane. Possibly the best Japanese food Ive ever had. The prices I found vary quite a bit from some dishes at $10-$50 but the prices are quite fair (depending on what you get) and the portion sizes are enough to fill you up. There was only one server and one chef so it can make the time for food to come out slow but it really makes the experience that much better as a lot of the dishes are very rich so it gives some time to prepare for the next thing. If youre looking for a quick bite this is probably not your place but if you want to spend some good time with good company I would definitely recommend this place. I think this restaurant could easily be of bib gourmand/Michelin star quality. I would honestly come to Montreal again just to eat here, its that good.
Absolutely excellent food and service.
The best restaurant in Montreal hands down. The food that comes out of this kitchen is sensational, made with care and high quality ingredients. Superstar team, always humble, kind and knowledgable. Excellent wines. Pricey but worth every single dollar and more.
Ambiance spot on, menu exciting and full of rich flavors, low-key service, great drinks. Can t wait to go back.
A very small restaurant with only 3-4 tables and a bar. Be sure to make a reservation in advance. The food itself was incredibly delicious and almost every single dish had me going in for more. We started with the scallop carpacio which was incredibly soft and fresh. The quality of the scallop speaks for itself. The accompanying sauce was pretty good, it was light in flavour but added a nice mint kick to each bite. The karaage was incredibly juicy and delicious. It just might be the best karaage Ive ever had. It was hot and fresh out of the oil but was not overly greasy. The fry on the skin was perfect and it really let the chicken shine. We ended up ordering another serving of the karaage. The maguro rice bowl was clean and simple. It was served with some small sheets of seaweed so we could make our own little hand rolls. The tuna was soft and fresh, it was the red meat so there was definitely some iron flavour, but definitely not overpowering and definitely not fishy at all. The rice was seasoned with some vinegar and soy sauce. When everything was combined with the seaweed, it transformed into the perfect bite of sushi hand roll. The sleeper dish is most definitely the brussel sprouts. It was unexpectedly flavourful and was a nice surprise for everyone. It was broiled and came out piping hot, it was hot, salty and a little smokey. The star of the meal was definitely the duck confit mazemen. It is incredibly rich and creamy once everything is mixed together. We shared 2 bowls between 5 people and it was definitely enough to fill us up since it was so rich. The duck was fall off the bone tender and the bine was perfect for sucking. The noodles came with a soft boiled egg which added to the creaminess of the entire dish. I would definitely recommend ordering this dish.
Very charming little restaurant. I tried the mushroom ramen without knowing what to expect, and I still have it on my mind 2 weeks later! Everything was delicious and tasty. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family.
What an incredible place, what spectacular service. Thank you Julio for the good service and to the restaurant for the delicious food, my family and I love file parmigiana.
everything perfect Every time arrive Montreal must go here
Have to visit Otto every time we come to Montreal. Love love love here! The lady who takes the order is absolutely lovely;))))
As soon as you walk in front of the restaurant, youll be enchanted by the smell (in the summer, of course). The menu is simple yet elevated, the food is delicious and the service is very friendly and chill. I recommend this for a casual date or 2-4 people get together. There are also some fun and creative cocktails available, as well as beers, etc.
My taste buds are always jumping of joy and satisfaction after eating at Otto
Eating my Burrata mazemen coated my mouth with happiness. it felt like my whole mouth receiving a hug the likes of which I yearned for an eternity and a half. Service and decoration/lighting are amazing. New life mission, try out all mazemen
Every dish we had was amazing, and the staff is super friendly and welcoming. Great place!
This is exactly the kind of hipster Asian resto in Montreal I can t stand. Premium prices, but without premium service nor a premium space. Where you re supposed to just be happy paying more to look cool (??). So disappointing too, since I ve been meaning to try Bistro for a long time. I have a friend who s constantly singing its praises. I m such a fan of the OG Otto near Concordia. I m there regularly, and Coco is sweetheart. Otto Bistro is the exact opposite of that concept in execution. After being seated, it took 20 minutes before I was given a cup of water and the menu, from which I promptly ordered once I was informed what they had run out of. 8pm and they re already out of their signature sea urchin and bone marrow. Whatever. I order 3 dishes - some croquettes, the chirashi bowl and the duck confit noodles. It take 25 minutes before I m finally served the maitake croquettes (which had hardly any maitake). During that time, server is nowhere to be found to fill my empty cup. There are only 4 croquettes, which were consumed in no time. Why it takes 25 minutes to fire a few croquettes, which take no time to cook - should ve been a preview and warning of the next long wait. Mind you the restaurant wasn t exactly packed. Most tables were already done. It takes another 35 minutes - an hour after I ordered - for the duck confit to arrive. Why the hot dish came before the chirashi is beyond me. The chirashi arrived 10 minutes later. Why or how a chirashi bowl takes 70 minutes to make after ordering is beyond me. Just horrible slow and inattentive service. The food was OK. But nothing mindblowing. This is standard Japanese fare. But with jacked up prices. Last bit - here s why I don t like the space - the kitchen isn t properly ventilated. My cloths all smell like grease now, from the fryer. It s worse than if I went to a Korean BBQ. Just ick. If you re going to charge premium prices, then make the rest fit. Otherwise it makes no sense.
Good welcome and very good food
Amazing food
This place is a gem, the food is beyond amazing, the staff is always friendly and welcoming, I always feel at home! 100% recommend, cant wait to go back for the billionth time :-)
Terrific restaurant with wonderful meals. Its a small place with one person in the kitchen but the meals make such a big impact on you. Truely a memorable culinary experience.
