Simple, unfussy Japanese restaurant for a changing "meal-set" menu of hot & cold plates wide sake selection, Saturday night omakase!
Simple and quaint Japanese restaurant. Been here a couple of times. Dishes are fresh and tasty (you are paying for quality), sashimi is flavourful, service is friendly and courteous. Atmosphere is intimate and easygoing. Overall, a pleasant experience.
We had an amazing meal at nozy. The service was super fast and the food was delicious and well presented. The only problem is that we went on a Sat night and they were out of uni/toro so a few menu items were unavailable. Nonetheless very good and will come back to try other items. highly recommend the ceviche
The restaurant is small and cozy. One of the few places where you can actually hear your dining companions. Reservations are a must. The service was excellent. She was helpful, knew the menu and attentive. This is not a sushi restaurant but serves fresh Japanese food. Everything on the menu looked appealing. We ordered more food than necessary but it was so good, we ate everything. The one thing that I would skip is the potato croquettes. They were good but felt out of place with the rest of the menu. Starters: the beef tataki sauce was good; the beef was a bit chewy. The flavor of the yakatori was really good. The five pc omakase starter is very worth the $20. So good! The Karaage chicken was perfectly fried. Mains: The Take Kago is really good if you wanted a bit of everything. It was well explained and nicely presented. The Unagi Don was delicious, the eel very well prepared. The seafood platter was fresh. The oysters were delightful. Note: some dishes from the Omakase starter were also in the Take Kago. Maybe ask what is in each before ordering if you want a bit more variety. We all had beverages (non achohlic) and they were refreshing. Perfect for a hot summer. Desserts. Oh my. We ordered an assortment and it was all wonderful. My favorite was the yuzu sorbet.
The veggies in octopus plate were actually better than the octopus 😂 unagi bbq eel rice was delicious.
I finally tried the omakase menu. It was very extensive with a lot of different flavours. Maybe too many flavours for one evening. It was good but not extraordinary. The service for the omakase is long, about 2h. The 13-dish menu comes with unlimited sake (Masumi Shiro white, Yukiotoko Junmai, Ippaku Suisei tokubetsu junmai, Dewa no Yuki kimoto junmai). It was a good experience; however, I prefer choosing from their regular menu what I like to eat. I have been here many times for dinner and really like their sashimi. I recommend this restaurant but you can skip the omakase. This place is small and can get really busy so I recommend reserving ahead.
I recently dined at Nozy restaurant and had their fresh lobster and sashimi. Lobster was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful, with a natural sweetness. The presentation was elegant, and the service was excellent. The sashimi is so fresh and tasty. I highly recommend Nozy for an outstanding lobster experience. Truly a seafood lover's delight!
I recently tried the Omakase experience, and while it introduced me to new flavors, overall, it was just okay—nothing particularly special. Despite tasting some unique dishes, the bill was surprisingly over $200, which felt excessive. While the food was good, it didn't quite justify the high price tag. The restaurant itself is quite small, accommodating only a few customers at a time, so it's not ideal for group outings but more suited for intimate dates. On the positive side, the chef was very friendly, and I appreciate supporting local restaurants.
Went to this restaurant for my birthday. And the foods were amazing (very authentic). There sakés options were very good. And there yuzu saké was to die for. The staff a super friendly. The ambiance was good and cozy. It was a small restaurant. I forgot to mention that they also offered omasake menu. This is one of the thing that I would come back for it. I highly recommended this authentic Japan restaurant.
Best japanese restaurant in town quality/price and we tried them all.
Cozy spot with authentic Japanese food. We ordered almost all the dishes and appetizers on the menu to share and it was really excellent. The okonomiyaki was the highlight. Dietary restrictions: We had someone with a nut allergy and they were able to everything except on elf the dessert options.
One of my favorite Japanese places in Montreal :) cozy and relaxing space with delicious food
So happy to have such authentic Japanese food in Montreal!
The food was mediocre, sashimi was good but chicken curry just tasted like ordinary S&B box curry and udon carbonara had almost no flavor and was soupy
Very delicious
Enjoyable. Fish was alright. Blue fin good but what really disappointed us was the rice. It was not the koshi hikari rice I would have at least expected for that price. The long grain rice really damaged the experience. Each spoon was meh - spoilt by the texture and the seasoning not that well balanced. In addition, the fish temperature was a bit too warm as well. Again for that price I was expecting more.
The best restaurant in the area by far. If I only went to one restaurant for the next five years, let it be here.
Nozy is not just a restaurant, it is an authentic Japanese culinary experience. With chef Nozomu Takeuchi at the helm, you cant help but be transported on this journey to the heart of Japan. The Omakase (chefs choice) experience may seem expensive to some, but the 13 courses accompanied by sake during these two hours will quickly make you forget it. Delights including sashimi, soups, meats, typically Japanese dishes, each bite is an orgasm in the mouth. Favorite about black cod The dishes vary depending on seasonal products. The chef is an artist who will transport you to his country of origin. The only sad thing about the experience is that it has to end! A favorite and an experience to repeat again and again!
One of the best Japanese restaurants in Montreal. The food is authentic, octopus dish is so good!! Eel over rice is perfect! Highly recommend this place
Impeccable. So well balanced, a pure pleasure!
Delicious!
Great discovery, it s going to be part of my 100% Japanese restaurant rotation! I had the chu-toro sashimi bowl and the quality of the fish was there! My friends loved it!
Freshest seafood ever! The omakase was awesome, Id highly recommend!
Small and cozy place to enjoy tasty Japanese dishes. The sashimi is a must!
Food and quality was good but a bit disappointing and overpriced for the quantity comparing to other Japanese restaurants
The staff completely ignored us, despite being the only group waiting in line. Their behavior was incredibly rude and disrespectful. Very disappointing experience.
Délicat, délicieux et Incontournable. Would be genuinely sad if it closed. Updated: Still so simple and so good.
It was Saturday. The food is excellent, the price is very expensive though. We were disappointed in two things. There were people promoting it on social media and as there was a scheduled tasting menu, there was a waste of time taking photos and we didnt have time to finish the alcohol and had to pay the bill quickly without being able to relax a little. Suggestion not to do this on an evening when there are customers, it broke the atmosphere, plus she wanted to take a photo of us and I said no but 5 minutes before she tried to do it thinking that I saw not . The last 3 meals were brought quickly. The tasting menu with sake cost us $430 with tip, for me it s too expensive but that s the price The owner does not take the trouble to greet customers once upon arrival or departure despite the fact that it is an intimate place. I do not recommend although the dishes were good
Service and ambience was great however the food sucked
The cuisine is simply incredible. I chef works taste miracles. Go there, it s truly an experience you won t forget.
Great restaurant with delicious food and good drinks.
Horrible service as they keep cancelling our ubereats order last minute. We attempted to order on 3 different days and all 3 times the orderes were cancelled 30 minutes before the delivery time.
The food was exquisite. I recommend the fried chicken, the sashimi which was fresh and tasty and the grilled eel bowl. Unfortunately, the service was disjointed and slow. The waitress seemed overwhelmed. For the quality of the food, I recommend!
Every dish was delicious, explosion of flavor! Always a good experience going to Nozy :)
Average taste, too little quantity
5-star welcome and delicious meals!
Great food here, you never run out of options. A lot of rarities you cant get in other restaurants. My first time trying uni was here. They introduce new menu items and specialties often. Also I noticed your website seemed to be hacked? Compromised? It leads to a weird scammy page about winning stuff or the lottery, it wasnt like that before, I hope you can get it fixed. Also noticed the opening hours changed drastically, is there a reason its only on Mondays now?
Yummy Yummy Next time I will try Uni Food
Price of a Michelin, quality of a gas station. Sashimi was fishy (in the bad way). One piece of tuna had a long vein attached and the blood was utterly disgusting. Not to mention other annoying details like sticky bowls, hot rice (???), cheap sweet sauce, etc. Okay, I ve had both high-end omakase and grocery store sushi, and Nozy s food definitely sits on the lower end of the spectrum. I can only say that I m glad that I did not have the omakase here, because it s ridiculous that a place like this dare to offer people omakase. Maybe they hire chefs from other places just to survive their Saturday nights, haha. I rarely leave reviews because most places have ratings that are justified, or at least informative, in one way or another. But the reviews for this place are very misleading. In summary, if you re a sashimi fan, avoid this place.
The chef is Japanese. He is truly living his IKIGAI. The food reflects the care and attention he has put into this place. A must if you want to experience a quaint authentic pretentious free Japanese restaurant.
Price was 150$ per person for the omakase and you can drink as much as you want to try different sake with the multitude of course. The restaurant is pretty small so be sure to book if you want to eat there. Good japanese food that impressed me. It also filled me up pretty well. Since the restaurant is pretty small, the food comes out at the same time for everybody.
Super good little restaurant to discover.
Amazing food! The Omakase experience sure is worth it!
Excellent, authentic Japanese restaurant. Well be back.
The food was fantastic, and the cozy atmosphere made for a great dining experience. Our waitress Mathilde was exceptionally nice and attentive.
A hidden gem in the area.
This is honestly one of, if not, my favourite restaurant in Montreal. I went a few times already and it never disappoints. Their Omakase experience was amazing and a really good value considering the sake degustation. I wouldn t necessarily come just for the atmosphere or the service, but the food and quality of the seafood is the star here
Absolutely loved my experience here. One of the best place I ve been for Sashimi. Cut were super fresh, service was quick, food was amazing. Can t wait to come back Food
Great spot for fresh sashimi. Intimate and friendly! I tried their uni, tuna and salmon don and shared 16pc sashimi as an appetizer. The fish was fresh and its not easy to find uni in Montreal so it was great :)
Authentic Japanese food made with local ingredients (as much as possible). Simple no frill. Great value. Highly recommended.
Second time at Nozy and I asked myself why I didnt go more often. The fish was fresh and delicious. The Yuzu ceviche was also mouth watering! The Kaisen Don is a classic. Having different types of seafood is always amazing We also took the entree with 5 dishes from the chef. Must try!
Ordered oysters, beef tataki, grilled octopus and ceviche as entrees and Kaisen don and Uni Tuna Salmon don as main. Everything was exceptional.
Great Japanese food!
The chefs surprise was excellent. Food was delicious!
Vegetarian options: Légumes Food
One of the best Japanese restaurants Ive tried in Montreal. Friendly and cozy atmosphere, extremely large and varied menu. The service is fast and courteous. The dishes are tasty, well executed and served hot and crispy. The cheese katsu curry is amazing, I will definitely go back.
I had a wonderful Valentines Day dinner here with my love. The food was delicious. The fish was particularly outstanding. I think this is my new favorite restaurant! I cant wait to go back
Excellent 9-course meal, very good flavors (sea urchin, caviar, sashimi).
One of the best Japanese restaurants in Montreal! Delicious menu, great service and very cosy atmosphere. We loved everything but we had karaage fried chicken seconds :) Will be visiting again! Food
WoW !!!!!
It was excellent, we had the most expensive plate on the menu, an omasake tasting for two with extra sea urchin. We received sashimi and oysters with caviar and sea urchin! It was very fresh and succulent. There are also several other very affordable and inexpensive options. An entry for $9 is very reasonable
A little overrated, in my opinion. Id rather go to fancier sushi restaurants because they have a higher quality seafood. Though, the kaisendon was nice. The place is cozy, and the worker is nice.
We went there for their Omakase dinner and we had such an amazing time! The food was absolutely delicious and authentic (Im Japanese by the way. ) The service was excellent and everyone was making sure that we were enjoying the food and everything. We will definitely be going back there soon!
Really affordable restaurant for the quality of the food! The place is more on the casual side and cozy and great for cold winter evenings when you want to drink sake and eat sashimi.
Delicious sashimi and kara-age, at a more than affordable price for the quality!
I liked the food overall. would like to explore the entrees more next time. The mains are kinda small. It was a bit noisy, which is fine but thought I should mention it here so expectations are set.
Not impressed. Sashimi appetizer very small portions. The Unagi was overcooked and dry. And the rice was uncooked and hard. Cold reception. Unwelcoming and expensive.
The main dishes are small and over-priced. Their chirashi has an off-putting sweet sauce over the rice. They also deep-fried their okonomiyaki instead of the standard way of pan-frying..
First time I ordered all the uni was bad gave it a second chance because of all the good reviews, what kind of restaurant thinks it s acceptable to serve a plate with half bad uni and salmon?
Terrific food, service and overall atmosphere
Excellent Japanese cuisine. Everything was delicious, we ate very well. The sea urchin, the crab, the sashimi, everything was fresh and very tangy. The atmosphere there really isn t one. Where does it go wrong? The service was poor. Not at all ill-intentioned. But really bad. We were practically kicked out and they closed the kitchen without notifying us of the last call. We ordered a good amount of food and very good sake. That we had to rush to finish so they would lock the door behind us. Last time. Its a shame :(
Good Japanese restaurant.
Great lunch option if you work around the area. Food is tasty and service is efficient ! Food
The only restaurant that keeps returning. With inflation, the price of this restaurant seems to be good value for money. The food quality is as excellent as ever.
Wonderful food in a lovely restaurant! This is one of my favorite places. Edit. Still one of my favorite places. Lovely quiet ambiance. Amazing food. Food : 5/5
food was delightful (highlights include grilled octopus and fresh tuna). as were the drinks, unique and tasty. vibe is lowkey and great for catching up with friends (ie no need to shout over the music). highly recommend!!
Tried their Kaisen Don. Its a bowl of mixed fish, uni, and sweet shrimps. The rice was served excessively wet, mushy and almost hot which is totally unacceptable for a sashimi bowl. Its almost insulting. The sweet shrimps were the tiny ones you get all you can eat sushi. For a bowl of nearly $40, youd expect it to be served with the usual ama ebi. The staff was generally very polite and kind. But table service was inattentive and bare minimum. I probably went on a bad night. I wouldnt recommend to anyone.
Amazingly good
A decent place but there are better sushi restaurants.
Delicious and fresh food! Its a small but very cozy restaurant. It is less busy during lunch. I will be back soon! Their home juice and limonade are amazing, 100% recommend! Kid-friendliness: They have a high chair for children
Simple and quiet restaurant. Good service. Excellent food!
I had the unagi bbq with rice for lunch. It tasted like heaven. Cold saké was great on a hot summer day.
What an adorable place, and such great food. Everything we ordered was delicious and so fresh. The karaage was some.of the best Ive ever had. Amazing cocktails. And the service was really good as well. Ive lived in the neighborhood for many years and somehow never visited until recently, but I will be going back! Highly recommend for a nice date night or a place for a small group to share plates.
Really mediocre. Does not match the photos. The octopus was really bad. Oily and overcooked. No, not grilled. Donations were mediocre. Ultimately, value for money, you dont get what you pay for. Too expensive for nothing.
Nice Japanese izakaya is a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks Sake wine tasting $18 three glasses Many kind of sake import from Japan , not from SAQ. Good to try. The best karage chicken in town so far. Sashimi fresh and good portion and very good price. Also in menu. Many local Japanese snack and dinner in very good price are highly recommended. Small kitchen but use their heart to service . Please support local businesses and families restaurants. Bravo
Really calm atmosphere, great place for a date. The food is tasty but a bit overpriced for what you get
Cute small place, food is decent, priced so-so
Perfect, highly recommended, the best japanese restaurant in Montreal by far (tried all of them)
Amazingly fresh Japanese food. Sashimi was the best Ive had in Montreal (Im from Vancouver and have been to Hawaii a few times, so I have high standards lol). The uni was super fresh as well. Sake flight was great and had a fun variety.
Everything we had here was surprisingly good! The marinated eggplants was nothing to look at but tasted amazing! The omurice with beef sauce was excellent, and the eel rice bowl was buttery and decadent. Definitely worth your time and money!
Had dinner here on a Thursday night and it was very chill. I like it when you dont have to shout to have a conversation. The food was very fresh and delicious
I liked this restaurant, good quality, normally acceptable price, but normally the sashimi as starters are not too thin, this evening, it was 30-40% less thick tehn usual and not much variety for 16 pieces... I find this shocking as its my favorite item in this restaurant. Too bad, I dont know if Ill go back? Note: I never take the sashimi with rice (main dish), as the rice is always hot and start to cook the sashimi (maybe that is the way in Japan, but for me it make no sense)
Underwhelming food quality and portion
We went to the Omakase night on Saturday evening. Everything was delicious and portions were quite generous. They had several Sake options available that were included in the price. A heartfelt recommendation Food : 5/5
Went for 14 course omakaze, that ended up being 13 courses. 4 of the courses were served together, one bite each. Really small portions. Disappointingly so. Tiny cuts of sashimi. One of the main courses was a tablespoon of rice covered in maybe 1.5 tablespoons of curry sauce with a teaspoon of shredded chicken. Would be funny if it wasn t so expensive. Way overpriced for what was served.
Great service and food! Thought about gatekeeping but this place definitely deserves more attention!! Will definitely be coming back.
Went for the 14 course omakase. Was disappointed in the lack of fish and quality for the substantial price. The unlimited alcohol included would normally be expensive but was not a good trade for the quality of the food. Was really trying to like this restaurant but left feeling shortchanged.
It tasted authentic, delicious and fresh.
I admit that it s a bit pricy, but quality was there for raw fish. As a Japanese person, prefer not to have sriracha sauce (?) on rice but all fish tastes great so no complaints. It seemed like it s run only by owner himself for lunch time so it might take time to be served if it s busy.
Amazing place, perfect atmosphere for a date night. Best octopus I have ever eaten. The ingredients are so fresh. The fish is of exceptional quality. The octopus was so good that we ordered a second plate!!! The staff is very courteous. Great discovery, we will return.
The fish is very fresh and melt in your mouth! Excellent quality for a very decent price point, with a great selection including urchin and fatty tuna. Simple but very beautiful presentation of the dishes, the take kago comes in a cute woven basket with a chef s selection of different appetizers to try, and serves as a meal. Their karaage is also one of my favourites in Montreal!
Ordered the chirashi bowl for two. Everything was fresh and relish. Totoro tummy, uni, eels, salmon and the rice was all so flavourful! Update 10/2023 I did not go back to that restaurant since the pandemic. Decided to try their Omakase that they serve during the weekend. The ingredients were amazingly fresh and I would definitely recommend to go for their all you can drink menu as well. Pricing was a bit expensive but worth the experience. If you re craving for some fresh Japanese seafood dishes, it is definitely worth going.
Simply the best. The chef is an artist and I will never get tired of coming to this restaurant.
For me as a Japanese, this is definitely ranked in top 3 of my favourite Japanese restaurants. You should try Uni, Saumon, Bluefin tuna don.
Good one
We were originally planning to get dinner at Satay Brothers on a Saturday night. However the place was so busy that we went down the street and came across Nozy. We were able to get a table immediately. The atmosphere was very cozy on a chilly December evening. I ordered the unagi don and shared the fruit sake tasting drinks with a friend. The peach and plum sakes were delicious - Id highly recommend. The unagi don was delicious and very filling. Service was fantastic, our server was very friendly and helped us pick what to order. I really loved this restaurant and would definitely visit again!
Delicious food and cozy ambiance. We ordered the sashimi platter and each piece was delicious. Planning on heading back to try their non-sashimi dishes/plates. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for the sashimi alone.
MY GO TO PLACE for authentic Japanese food. Ordered the roasted squash, the kaisen don and the chefs choice. All were fantastic!
Authentic Japanese cuisine with a great and wonderful chef
Best place ever The food is fabulous, always very fresh and the chef really nice. I absolutely recommend!
First time eating here. Sushi rice is not prepared properly, its overcooked. Sashimi is not fresh enough. But the fried chicken is pretty good. Overall 33$ for uni salmon don its overpriced.
Definitely the better fish quality type of sushi spot. Ordered the Kaisen Don for takeout and it looked and tasted pretty average. Tuna was super lean and not fatty like in the pictures you see. Sashimi slices are thin, medium sized to tiny. This is not how a kaisen should be offered in this price range. Rice is good. No wasabi. Only greens. Never again. 2 stars for the 2 slices of fish they give per fish - 4 in total.
Highest
The best sashimi we have had!
Food was delicious but dessert terrible.
Simply the best! Absolutely everything on the menu is delicious
Cute and cozy place with fresh sashimi.
The uni don is not cheap but definitely fairly priced for its quality. Very fresh and sweet. I think it s the place to go when you want to have sashimi of a higher quality but not breaking your bank.
Ive been coming here for the last three years, dishes are fantastic and truly a taste from Japan. Make sure to try the special cocktails too. For food, youll never be disappointed with a Take Kago!
Late post- My family and I went to Nozy for Mother s Day. We ordered takoyaki and beef tataki for appetizers. They came out fairly quickly. They were very nice and the tataki was refreshing. We had Take Kago, Kaisen Don and uni tuna salmon don. Everything was fresh and the meal was the right size. The prices are fair for the amount of fresh fish you get. The service was quick and friendly! Would come again :)
I cant speak highly enough of this restaurant. The sashimi/fish/seafood is high quality. The prices are fair. The chef, who seems to run the whole place himself, at least on week nights, is just so lovely. If you like Japanese food, you wont be disappointed.
Authentic Japanese, simple, very honest food with subtle and very fresh flavors.
It was simply delicious. Not too heavy for dinner. Great service too! Miso soup starter, assorted sashimi and take kago (5 small dishes)
Very delicious and beautiful presentation.
Loved the vegan options.. wil go back and back and back
Excellent food. I would love to go there every week.
Very innovative menu with nice selection of sake. Service was impeccable!
Super fresh and delicious sashimi, and wonderful sake. Takekago plate is my personal favourite.
We were very excited to discover this place because the reviews were very positive. Unfortunately our experience was rather bad. We ordered take out as our young baby doesnt allow us to sit still in a restaurant. What a disappointment when we realized that our bowls had no rice! My husbands dish was also incomplete. He had to go back on the road to find what he was missing, 20 minutes later he came back with the rice without any sauce with it. we ended up eating white rice and the side dish was cold. $90 for two people and they didnt even compensate us for all the trouble and barely an apology.
The food was fresh and very tasty. The marinated eggplant appetizer was delicious! Everything tastes better with great service and it was delicioso !
While the food was delicious, the decor left something to be desired. They dont have an extensive menu, but what they do make, they make it well. I had the Takoyaki and Unagi don, and I recommend them both. Service was quick, considering that they were pretty packed and there was a single waitress.
Pretty pricey for what you get but the food was good! Small menu overall. Not much ambiance inside but the area is very nice to walk around.
It was too expensive for the portion you get, not much selections.
My favorite japanese restaurant in Montreal! Good prices, outstanding quality, authentic recipes, just like in Japan!
Its not crazy cheerful at lunchtime but the service is rather quick, and above all, the dishes are excellent
Really enjoyed the food. The sashimi tasted fresh. The beef tataki was delicious. The peach basil gelato is a must try. The staff were really friendly and professional.
Everything is amazing over here! The food is amazing and the service as well
Thank you for such a great meal! We found the server very approachable and diligent. The timing of the food was perfect as well as the proportions and quality for the price. Definitely recommend if you re looking for a good Japanese meal in a quiet place.
Food was ok
Low key fancy
Exceptional. Value, taste we had a mixture of everything and we were alll pleased!
Authentic Japanese cuisine; the dishes are prepared with great care and quality ingredients. The unmistakable sign: when I had lunch there, the customers at the other three tables were all Japanese.
Excellent lunch
Favorite japanese restaurant in Montréal. As someone who cannot eat sashimi, this place is really nice to enjoy with friends who love it. I get to choose the Unagi rice, the Karaage, and many many more cooked dishes while others can enjoy there freshly cut fish.
We had the Omakase menu and will definitely return to try the regular menu. The omakase menu was $160 with unlimited sake and cocktail, in addition to 12 dishes (10 service but the one service included 3 dishes!). We were very full and was impressed by the variety. This is not a nigri-only type of omakase and included more cooked dishes. Would highly recommend! A feedback would be to have more acidic balance to some of the fattier dishes (e.g. curry, wagyu) and to have palate cleansers like sorbets earlier on in the omakase. Overall great menu with lots of special items!
If you love a little bit of everything and love different textures, go for the chef s lunch! Soup, salad, veggies, chicken and sashimi - tasty and well balanced!
It s always a pleasure to eat at Nozy. Thanks to the chef and the service :)
A really nice restaurant, well located! The staff is kind and share us some good tips. Also the food was delicious! I recommand the dish Take Kago. Thank you for this exeprience! I will go back for sure! Food
Quaint and very enjoyable restaurant. Delicious food. The sashimi was fresh and the tea crème brûlée was a gem. Will definitely be back. Friendly service too.
Very interesting to discover new recipes, a warm and really friendly place
Authentique Japanese food. The Unagi don is wonderful.
Every dish I had at this Japanese restaurant were outstanding. I can feel the chef-owner take great care in preparing every single dish served, and sometimes he will have imports from Japan such as fresh uni from Hokkaido.
Ive been coming for sushi brunch for 5+ years. Last Thursday, my parents and I came to a dining room with no wait staff. The poor owner-chef was running the kitchen, tables, and cash all on his own. Despite that, he still churned out quality dishes and fresh fish (one of the uni pieces was a bit off, but nothing serious) with little delay and still at great prices. I cant stress enough how good this place is, but seeing the owner run the entire show solo earns him top marks. Nozy is on my top 5 recommended restaurants to visit in Montreal.
I went for the omakase (a tasting of food items selected by the chef). -Nice plump fresh quality oysters from Massachusetts. 7/10 -Miso soup, light yet rich in subtlety, nuances. 7/10 -Salmon served different ways (as a tartare, served raw, tataki style, with salmon roe atop), on a bed of rice. For me, great cooking is the ability to deliver enticing traditional flavors, no matter the presentation. Here, they shared my views, not on paper, but on the ...palate! The tartare dazzled (10/10), the raw salmon was good (7/10). Delicious, inspired, whatever the words ... it dazzled in mouth! -Then an assortment of food items that did consist of: -Beef tataki, ponzu/daikon vinaigrette. Excellent beef, which consistency is kept slightly firmer than what western ppl tend to prefer, but firm or tender has nothing to do with what is right or wrong. It is a matter of preference. -fatty tuna/albacore/Japanese snapper - the fish is of good quality (I liked the fresh quality of the fish that was on display and asked my waitress where the fish came from. She said its flown in from Japan, Canada and east coast U.S) . Then, Good fresh wakame salad with the genuine flavors of Japan at the forefront 7/10, The tasting went on with: Black cod/miso (tasty, the classic recipe is applied not just properly but with flavors that shine 8/10), braised pork belly which showcased the homey look and dazzling comforting taste of mom-and-pop cooking (and that is a compliment) 9/10, delicious karaage (fried chicken) with a great crisp 7/10 - All in all, this was an excellent display of genuine Japanese flavors. I skipped dessert as the dessert of the day, crepe caramel, did not interest me. Bottom line: Foodwise, It has been a while that I havent felt so close to Japan..right here in Montreal.
My apologies but my honest opinion is that it was only ok. Not bad, but definitely not amazing. I got the salmon chirashi which was maybe the wrong thing to get. For the price, I expected higher quality salmon. The pieces I got were had a lot of fat and was chewy. There was a lot of rice under the sashimi and not much else. It would ve been nice to have some salad or seaweed with it. I felt pressured by the waitress to leave. Sorry but this is just my honest opinion. The takoyaki was good though, I did like that.
Nozy is the coziest, lovely spot for Japanese food. Their sake menu is lit and the food is on point. Quality of seafood is fresh and top-notch! You must try the eggplant dip though! It is divine!!!
The food is excellent, its not cheap but its worth the detour for an extraordinary Japanese culinary experience!
Exceptional food attentive service
Great food but small restaurant and bad accoustics so if one table is loud you cannot even hear the people youre with talking!
Went there tonight and had an excellent meal, the seafood was fresh and delicious, great cocktails and decent price for the outstanding quality. We will be back!!
Easily one of my favorite restaurants in Montreal. I tried several dishes from Nozy and I highly recommend their sashimi bowl. I took the one with tuna and uni, it was incredible. Fresh, succulent, the rice was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. Some of their dishes can be expensive, but honestly, their sashimi bowl is the best in town!
One of my go-to places for Japanese cuisine in Montreal. Everything is always fresh, beautifully presented and delicious.
Waitress was amazing! Super nice, very attentive. Food was good. Would go back
Authentic Japanese restaurant. I ve been craving REAL Uni for a long time. Sashimi in Nozy is fresh. When I had the first bit. I knew I came to the right place. I ll def recommend this place for sashimi lovers !!
Small neighborhood restaurant to try! Very good authentic Japanese cuisine in a calm and cozy atmosphere. Atmosphere : **** Cuisine: ***** (lots of taste and well-balanced cuisine) Price : *** Service : ***** Suggestions: - Chirashi salmon bowl - tuna poke bowl
Very disappointed! I used to come here a lot, and their uni toro don was my favourite dish. Today is my first visit to this restaurant after the pandemic. I went there with high expectations; however, the quality of food went down. I ordered sashimis assortis, pork tonkatsu, miso soup and the uni toro don. The miso soup and tonkatsu were ok, and everything else was terrible. Uni toro don -- The portion of the dish shrinks. The Uni toro don used to come with a miso soup and a salad. Now they all disappeared. The tuna toro was cut in thick and large pieces; now, its very thin and small. Plus, it tastes horrible!!!! Its NOT toro at all (Check the pictures I uploaded, you will see the huge difference!!) I dont even think this is a qualified average tuna. Besides, they used to use a ceramic bowl for the don. Now they changed it to a cheap plastic bow. I dont think a dish that costs 38 bucks should be presented this way. The flavour, portion and presentation -- totally not worth 38 bucks!!! Sashimis assorties -- It comes with five different kinds of fish. The salmon and tuna in it were sooooo bad. The salmon was cut into very thin pieces, and it tasted cheap. Even worse than the one sushi shop sells. The tuna is like being cut by a person who doesnt know how to cook. They were all in random shapes... Plus, the waitress only wore her mask when she serves. Whenever she returned to the cashier, she took off her mask!!! I think this is quite unprofessional. 2 stars for the pork tonkatsu and miso soup.
Super nice restaurant and friendly staff. The beef salad is amazing
We took out lunch after an intense cross-country skiing morning. The food was outstanding. It was fresh, well presented (even in a takeout container) and very flavourful. We savoured every bite and now it s our go to place for an amazing lunch. What a way to start the lunar new year! Kudos to the team! *** update *** About 8 months ago, in the middle of a pandemic, we took away lunch from Nozy and had a delectable experience. I gave it a 5 stars review and vowed to come back for supper as one wonders if the experience was just a fluke and can supper be just as good? Fast forward and I recently came back for a celebratory supper. Happy to report the experience was just exquisite and delectable! We enjoyed the appetizers of grilled octopus and blue crab with shrimp soup. I mean what a combination! Tasteful. As main, we ordered the salmon Chirashi bowl and the Toro Tekka Don (red bluefin tuna) bowl, both hits! One disappointment was that they ran out of uni. So a tip, call to make sure they stock up on the uni. My 2nd review and 5 stars again. Well done, well done.
Great food and service.
Good.
Delicious
First thing I lived in Japan for many years, so any Japanese restaurant that serves good food is great. The Oysters were lovely. For me though everything else, it was very expensive I had the tuna belly on rice it was $33 or $35 but no miso soup just rice. Yeah I think in Montreal all the sushi places over charge and I do understand that getting good fish here is difficult.
Excellent and fresh
