High-quality food and plenty of pastries make this a must-visit brunch spot in Montreal! The staff are professional. It gets quite crowded on weekends, so waiters might occasionally forget small details in your order. The prices are on the higher side for brunch—imagine paying $8 for a latte!” When you’re sitting in front of Saint Joseph oratory you should order Saint Joseph 😁 it is a Benedict, bagel topped with salmon and cream cheese, comes with a bowl of fruit.

🛑 MUST TRY 🛑 This French pastry shop and restaurant is a must try in montreal! The only negative thing I would add and this is why I give it a 4 star rating is because of how slow they are to bring out 3 already made dessert and two coffees! But if you have time to sit and wait, do try this place out!

The place was great, with lots of food options—all of which looked so good that it made choosing tricky! The food we ordered was excellent: we had the steak Benedict, salmon Benedict, and Florentine omelette, along with some pastries to try, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. I couldn’t recommend just one thing, as everything was fantastic. The service was also great, though there was a delay in seating us due to a system error. However, they quickly seated us at a convenient table, and the service was excellent from then on. 😊

Sadly unimpressed. Their croissants are just ok. They taste like a regular croissant that’s been baked 5 times over slathered with butter to make it super crispy and flaky, however they lack actual filling and any substantial difference from other places that makes these. At about 10$ each not worth it for me and.I tried 6 different ones. Didn’t try their cakes perhaps those might be better. Service was friendly and welcoming.

In my opinion this is the best breakfast place in Montreal. Unique menu and perfect serving. The food is amazing, everything is delicious no matter what you order. The coffee is definitely one of the best in the city. I would like to emphasize the staff, the team is very strong, friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend to visit also the bakery here you will find everything from pastries to cakes. Thank you for the high level of service and for the amazing cuisine.

Duc de Lorraine is amazing. The ambience is perfect, the food is great and the service is super pleasant and welcoming. Prices are a bit high but I’m from Texas so maybe that’s why. Everything we ate and drank was top-notch so we didn’t mind paying for quality and deliciousness.

Looks Great on Instagram, Tastes Disappointing 🤳👎 Instagrammable spots often sacrifice taste for looks, and that's exactly the case here. The place is beautifully decorated, perfect for photos, but the desserts, while visually appealing, fail to deliver on flavor. They're overly sweet and not worth the high price. The drinks share the same issue. The service is average, nothing extraordinary. Overall, a beautiful spot, but not worth the cost for what you get.

Food is okay, pastries are nice with a bug variety. However, for that price point, I was expecting more. It s way overpriced for what it was. 2 pastries and 2 coffees with tips we were at like 55$. At that price, there s better options although service was excellent !

One of my worst experiences handling a client concern occurred with Duc de Lorraine. On a Tuesday afternoon, I went to order a custom cake for my son s 12th birthday, which was the following Sunday. He s a huge fan of Sabrina Carpenter, so I brought them a CD cover featuring her picture to use as the design for the cake. Sunday morning, I was so excited. I kept imagining my son s face lighting up with happiness when he saw the cake. I had butterflies in my stomach the whole way there. However, when I arrived to pick it up, I was handed a plain, generic cake, nothing like what I had ordered no custom design, not even the right colors. I felt completely stunned. The manager, a young man who looked to be about 25, had an incredibly arrogant attitude and handled the situation poorly. One of the staff members tried to reassure me, saying they would fix the issue and asked me to return in 10 minutes. Understanding mistakes happen, I decided to give them the chance to correct it. I told them I d go shopping to give them more time and returned 45 minutes later. When I came back, I was handed the same cake. They had simply removed the strawberries from the top and added a small picture of Sabrina Carpenter. The picture was poorly done, with a white-and-brown background, and the cake looked even worse than before. When they saw how upset I was, no one tried to resolve the issue. They acted as though this is what it is. Eventually, an older woman, supposedly the owner, came to speak with me after noticing my distress. However, all she said was that she would talk to the staff, offering no apology, compensation, or meaningful solution. At the very least, I asked them to place the picture on a cake more suitable for a 12-year-old boy s birthday. Even then, I was met with indifference. I left the bakery in tears and cried the entire way home. The lack of care, empathy, or accountability from their staff was deeply disappointing and ruined what was meant to be a special day for my son.

Saw on Instagram and said wow ! Why have I not ever been there being born and raised in the plateau ! So I went after visiting my dad at the cemetery . Today is my wife s birthday and wanted her to try some of these renowned French pasteries ! We have been to France 3 times and just love ! So .. I walked in and asked for 6 of the best they recommend ! Total disappointment and overpaid garbage ! That s all ! Everything tastes old and cheap . Never again .

Very good pastries, in particular their strawberry mille-feuilles (They are often only available in the morning, which is a shame). On the other hand, I found that their espresso tasted burnt. Ive had a latte twice and didnt like the taste of espresso both times. But otherwise, their pastries are worth it and they offer a small park with tables and chairs for those who want to order takeout and not have service.

Barely equivalent to pastry from a mediocre French bakery. The prices are excessive compared to the quality of the products. The Paris Brest choux pastry was dry, and the tiramisu was not great. It s more of a tourist trap than a high-end pastry shop. Good service though.

The place overall is nice but the food is average in my opinion. My favorite was the tiramisú latte, I had crabcake eggs benedict which were ok, my husband had a burger which was also ok, for the price I expected the food to be better. Our waitress was amazing, super nice and helpful. We got a caramel millefeuille to do which was really good

As a Montrealer, I m embarrassed this place is currently so popular among tourists & visitors. This city has soooo many great brunch places, patisseries and boulangeries but this is just a tourist trap. It s not the original Duc de Lorraine we had 10+ years ago. The few good points about this place: - Location & View - It s so close to the Oratoire St Joseph and to Mount Royal, so it s easy for visitors to stop here for a quick break. - Long opening hours - Again, the focus is on tourists. Usually, this type of business close around 5 PM - 6 PM elsewhere in the city. Here are the reasons to skip it: - Food is really below average. The pastries we tried (Fraisier, Tiramisu & Opera) were not fresh. The Fraisier has an ordinary & uneatable rolled fondant piece on top of a bunch of whip cream with tasteless strawberries. The Opera was pretty much frozen, the different layers had hardly any flavour but all together was too sweet. To be fair, the New York rolls (round croissants) have good enough filling. - Prices are above average. It s above $10 - 13 per pastry. Pancakes are $40, I think. It s not worth the quality you get. - Service is messy. You get to talk to a lot of people from the moment you walk in until you leave, it seems no one knows you ordered. Overall, don t waste your time here.

We had the elegant Omelette Florentine, a delicately light omelette with spinach & gruyere& tomato, and a delicious & massive Salade Niçoise. This place is disaster, disappointment Menager is rude and incompetent I live in Montreal 1 year and I m trying to learn French and to speak. Today, for the first time, I lost my motivation to learn a language. I tried to answer his question in French and he ironically asked me if we should switch to English. Disrespect!!!! As for the product: I bought a cake, I paid 64 dollars and when I paid I saw a different one which I liked more and I asked If I could change it, he told me they can t and they can t refund it it s not right taste was disappointing and disaster I will not go back there never

I had to try it, given the immense reputation. Dinner. We ate twice the smoked salmon and avocado toast ($40), with the poached eggs (+$6) for me. Kir royal and café latte. Lemon tartlet to take away. Given the prices and reviews, I had high expectations. Very attentive service, well done! We feel the commitment to providing good service, it s very pleasant. Dishes: smoked salmon of fairly good quality. The whole plate was ok. Very ordinary salad. For this price, disappointing. I expected more serious attention to ingredient quality, flavor combinations and presentation. Successful lemon tartlet. Atmosphere: beautiful, bright little space (and large and beautiful terrace outside) and lively. Birthdays are celebrated with a song with (very) loud music and a light fountain. Three in an hour, with the smoke detector going off once... for me, its unpleasant. Be warned! If you like it, great! I will go back there to get pastries and macaroons to take away, which I want to give a chance, again because of their reputation. I wont eat there again. For the same price and the same type of dishes, you can eat much better in several places.

Food: 160$ for 1 person (with food allergies to citrus), 3 course meal with a cocktail. French onion soup always hits. It was fantastic but finding stems of rosemary in the soup was kind of a surprise. 9/10 Steak and mashed potatoes was good. Steak was a tad overcooked but still juicy and tender and came pre cut. Sided with a WAY too peppery sauce, lumpy (some lumps undercooked) mashed potatoes and caramelized onions (in quotes because some of them were burnt, some were undercooked to be called caramelized and a bit was plain raw). I expect lumpy mash potatoes at breakfast joints and dinners, not in a what looks to be high end French bistro. Kitchen has ample room for improvement. 7/10 Opera cake for desert had a weird flavour. Classic opera cakes are made with cognac. The server told me no alcohol was used, but eating it made me sick. I was fine for the entirety of my meal but started feeling nauseous after a few bites of the cake. I m thinking there was grand marinier (made with oranges) in the sponge and the kitchen staff did not know the recipe used by the bakers. My waitress came back rather quick with the answer so I don t think back of house verified the recipe Espresso martini was VERY vodka forward. Almost exclusively tasted of vodka. Thought it would pair well with the opera cake it didn t. 6/10 Service: Except a hic at the start where I was offered lemon (I m allergic) to go with sparkling water by another waiter, front of house was impeccable. The Maître D (charming lady) was warm and welcoming. My waitress answered questions and checked with the kitchen for my allergies. She was fantastic. 11/10 service. Paper napkins and cutlery were replaced with every course. She did a fantastic job. I tipped the way I did for her service. She did not make me feel rushed or out of place once. Ambiance: Has very high end French bistro vibes, dining area for dinner was in the back along windows covered by white semi sheer curtains. Soft ambiance music without lyrics played through the speakers. The front had a few tables but was mostly occupied by pastry displays. I assume that seating area was for people who came to enjoy desert. Tables were covered with white linen and paper covers and had a single stem rose as a center piece. The waiters were in crisp white long sleeve button down shirts, black bow ties, shoes, and pants, while the bussers and bar tenders were in all black. Proper waiting protocol was used. Lighting was soft without being too dark. The paintings on the walls were reminiscent of Van Goth. Over all, good experience with some bémols. I expected better for the price tag as it s not my first time there. 3.5/5 stars.

Where to start The setting is pleasant, the service is good and the dishes are very well presented. I ordered a Burrata tomato salad and to be honest, I was a little disappointed. The tomatoes didnt have much flavor and neither did the Burrata. I had hoped for tasty tomatoes from green farming and a good Italian Burrata, but no. It was edible but nothing more. For main course, I ordered octopus. There, on the other hand, we aimed for excellence. The octopus was tender and very tasty, the vegetables also had a divine flavor. I will give a 10/10 for this exceptional dish. Their cakes are also very good.

Note I only tried several pastries from a beautiful selection of offerings as take-out service, so my review is limited. What I had was quite good, everyone has opinions about croissants and related items but I found this well above average, which in this town is saying a lot! The location is beautiful with a lovely outdoor space (and a small park just across from it if you just want to do takeout and eat). The servers were also helpful and went out of their way to help me, even filling my own water bottle (as I was on my bike). I will note that I did not try their lunch items because they were so expensive, even by Montreal standards. I just am not up for paying $30+ for a sandwich! Other items are even more expensive, and if you are willing to pay $50 or more for a simple lunch than you have more money to burn than I do!

It was a bit weird experience. Initially one of the waiters was supposed to take care of our table. However, he was not well trained and was not polite to my wife as well. We were at the table for around 20 minutes and he didn t even bring us a menu. And then we waited for another 20 minutes and he still didn t take our order. So basically we waited for 40 minutes and only got two coffee. We were really upset and decided to pay the coffee and leave. Luckily this brought the receptionist and managers attention and they treated this situation very well, which we really appreciated. I would still give five stars since the food was actually outstanding and the managers treated us full of respect. Everything was great except one of the waiter. We travelled from Toronto for this restaurant and we believe we will be here again next time visiting Montreal.

November 23, 2024

Overhyped and overpriced place. Went to Duc De Lorraine with my friends, had tiramisu latte, amandine, opera cake. The opera cake is just loads of sugar without any flavor, amandine was alright noting special and the tiramisu latte was also okk. The service was not so remarkable, and the server seemed a bit rude, so all you are paying for is the ambience which was not bad. If you want good bakery items Premier Moisson is beside this which has a whole lot of flavor. To the manager or the person in charge: please do check your garbage regularly to assess what are the foods being ordered and not finished , these would give you an idea of what things need improvement. I have seen a lot of people not finishing up their meals, so try to assess what is wrong with certain items.

I bought a Raisin Bread and a Nutella New York Roll for $20, but the quality was disappointing. The New York Roll, filled with industrial Nutella, was cloying and lacked finesse. I recommend using a homemade chocolate cream made with quality, less sweet chocolate. The raisin bread, dry and tasteless, lacked butter and tasty pastry cream... To improve, it would be wise to take inspiration from other pastries in Montreal, which honestly offer much more quality products. On the other hand, the atmosphere and welcome were excellent! Good point on that

The cuisine and pastries/viennoiseries are perfect. The meal was delicious despite the fairly high price ($40 a croc monsieur..) The service leaves much to be desired, we were neither offered a drink nor a coffee. We were near the door and there was an unpleasant draft. The place is very noisy, we can barely hear each other, even if the place is very cute. I recommend going during the week and not on a weekend

Special shoutout to our amazing server Sam, who made our visit truly memorable. The culinary skills of Chefs Enok and Mariana brought out the best in every dish, and the presentation by Sarah and Marion added a touch of elegance. And lets not forget Frank, the efficient busboy who kept everything running smoothly. Merci à Peter pour le magnifique service comme toujours!

Had a decent croque madame, but the accompanying salad had no taste. My wife had the crab benedict but wasnt impressed by the dry brioche. Prices feel like they are double what they should be. $56 for eggs benedict? Ouch. The pastries for takeout appeared delicious. But I would not dine in here again.

I had a great time there!! Our waitress Charlie is very attentive to the smallest detail. It was my birthday and they (the staff) gave me a nice surprise when I ordered my cake for dessert (a strawberry millefeuille which was very good, not too sweet) and the meal was good , from starter to dessert, the portions seem small but it really fills you up!

Horrible, the worst croque monsieur ever! A completely failed French classic: soft bread soaked in oil and very fatty cheese with an unpleasant taste and smell and too abundant in terms of quantity. Almost a cheese fondue on the plate, all covered in very thick béchamel. Very ordinary coffee. Exorbitant prices $40 per croque monsieur. Fries ok. Friendly service in a noisy room where the heat was unbearable. The only attraction: the outdoor terrace and view of the Oratory. A haven for tourists and Instagrammers. Too bad but this is no longer the place I knew during the 80s. Note: the popular mille-feuilles 13.75 before taxes. I passed my turn.

The quality is really not what I expected. There is a lot of better croissants in Montreal that are half of the price of these, the pistachio roll looks artificially coloured and doesn t taste like pistachio cream. Even the matcha ice latte was watered down and didn t taste like much at all

Disgusting food. It was cold and hard to cut. How can a croissant be so hard? The only good thing was the view but meh. Ice cream coffee that tastes like milk.. Also I learned from someone that they pay people to promote their restaurant on social networks. It makes sense because I dont think anyone was going to say its disgusting and the truth if theyre paid.... In short 2/10 for the view and the service. At least the girl who served us was nice. Perhaps it was a bad day, but the service was a complete chaos when visited yesterday. Too many waiters coming to us, mixing the orders, even when spoke to in French, everything seemed confusing. Our orders took about 30-40 minutes before we could all get our food, and they just couldnt get it right. We got served 2 plates of 3 eggs separately, when we asked for two eggs on the side of French toast. We kept one plate, and it just sat on the table for about 15-20 minutes, they were cold once the rest of the food arrived and they just microwaved the plate and brought it back. The avocado toast was such a disappointment for the price you pay (30$). The toast was small and hard to chew. It was tricky to take a bite off with the big halves of cherry tomatoes arranged on top . The side of salad was decent but you end up getting more salad than avocado toast. I believe this place made its name, but now the quality and service have downgraded tremendously over the years and is definitely overpriced. On the other hand, Pesto Burger with fries was tasty and the portion was good. When offered ketchup/ spicy mayo, it arrived halfway through the meal. Not to mention, for a high end restaurant, it would be nice if all the bathroom door locks were functional. The city set up picnic table right in front of the restaurant across the street, easy to grab better food at a better price and still enjoy the view. Montreal brunch scene is great, and Id rather go somewhere else where its worth it next time.

don t want to be too harsh as i only tried the new york supreme croissant but honestly it was dry, chewy and too sweet. it had an ungodly amount of nutella that overtook the taste of the pastry. the location was cute and the service was very friendly and helped make recommendations.

I called Sunday afternoon to make sure they still had baguettes and was told no but that they would prepare some before I arrived. Arriving on site 15 minutes later as planned, I was given the last baguette , hard as a brick and dry. Really mediocre for $7 a baguette.

For many years this has been one of my favorite spots in Montreal. Many options from sweet to savory and all good quality for the price point. This is no longer the case. Perhaps the chef changed, but the Guiandua that I have ordered for many years now has significantly changed. With a large price increase. Totally different color, only half the macaron cookie, the chocolate squares are terrible quality, and there is barely any hazelnut flavor at all. Very disappointing. I will no longer recommend this to anyone visiting this city as there are plenty better options.

I recently visited Duc de Lorraine in Montreal and was disappointed by the experience, especially considering its reputation. The coffee was shockingly overpriced for what it offered nothing extraordinary, just a basic brew with a steep price tag. As for the crème brûlée, while the texture was fine, it lacked the richness and depth of flavor I expected from such a renowned pâtisserie. For the price, I anticipated something much more indulgent. The ambiance is charming, but the food and drinks dont justify the premium pricing. I wouldnt recommend it if youre looking for good value for your money.

October 23, 2024

We were there for brunch. The prices are high for typical brunch offerings but the quality is very good. The service however was terrible an in no way was reflective of the price of the meal. Our server took our order while leaning over a fence on the terrace and never returned (food was delivered and cleared by wait staff) and that was the last we saw of him. After the plates were cleared we waited 30 minutes for someone to check on service and see if there was anything else. We then had to ask for our server to return and it was almost 20 minutes before we were presented with a bill (by another server). Never during the experience were we asked if everything was fine or if there was anything else that could be provided. I would give a 0 on service if I could. 2 people, 2 eggs benny dishes, 2 coffee, $150 CAD. A totally unsatisfying event. But if you are a tourist, do take-out on pastry, and expect to pay a lot, but at least you wont have a negative experience. Parking: street parking in a busy tourist area can be challenging.

They could lower these prices by 33% easily to make it a good quality-price rapport

I have been going to the Duc de Lorraine for over 36 years. They used to make the best pastries and butter croissants. This time, I went with 2 colleagues and I have ordered a bowl of café lait and butter croissant. Your croissant was disappointingly cold, covered with some shiny salty fat and tasteless. Where are the authentic DUC de Lorraine real butter croissants? My bowl of café au lait was cold. My 2 guests were satisfied with their omelettes though. It was the first time that the Duc disappointed me, and I do hope it was the last as well. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free Celiac Safe
