Traditional Chinese option plating a menu of Sichuan & Cantonese dishes, plus dim sum.
My wife and I were really in the mood for some good Chinese food and since we were already in downtown Montreal, we decided to walk over to Chinatown which has in my opinion the best Chinese restaurants in Montreal. We chose a real, “Old School” restaurant named Fung Shing on Boul. Saint-Laurent which has been around since 1976. The interior reminded me of when my parents took me to Chinese restaurants as a kid. Great memories! We selected from the menu, Hunan Dumplings, Lemon Chicken, Beef with Ginger and Pineapple and Stir Fried Vegetables, and let me tell you we experienced an explosion of flavours from each of these dishes. The portions were extremely large and we could not finish all of our food. The restaurant packaged it up for us to takeout so that we could bring it home and enjoy this absolutely delicious food once again.
This place is very welcoming and understanding. We ordered initially 6 dishes and they came out very quick. The portions were large and prices were very reasonable. We had a large group so we ordered 2 more dishes 10 mins apart from one another. They came out with the additional dishes quick and without any hassle from servers. I want to gatekeeper but this place is too good
My food was so fresh and delicious!! I was greeted freindly when i walked in from the snow storm and mall food court was closed. I got the general tao chicken on steamed rice. Rice was fresh, broccoli crunchy and fresh, chicken fresh and crispy excellent portion.
Everything we ordered was tasty! We didn’t expect the small portions to be this big haha that was amazing. I would recommend to go with friends and share a delicious meal here. The tea the gave us was also very nice.
This place takes you back in time to 70’s with the wood panelling and double swinging doors into the kitchen. The portions were generous and the prices very reasonable. The flavours were much like home cooking, light on the salt and spices. Good thing too, because that way you can eat more and have a better chance of finishing things off. The mixed seafood hot pot was great and so was the prawns fried rice.
It has not changed ... 30+ years. The house special rice is as good as ever 😍 This rating is a bit overrated - from my nostalgia. May 2023: the place has not changed much; some how the wonton soup and the special house rice (not on the menu any more) did not taste as good as I remember.
Practically the only Chinese Restaurant I liked to eat at when I'm in Chinatown. Friendly staff, good food and prices are fair for what you get. I've been living for 35years, and my family has been going there for more than 40 years. Best Wonton Noodle Soup! Hands down.
Decent Chinese food. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. The boss is super nice!! We ordered orange beef, but he told me beef was not fresh and the new shipment haven't come in yet so we changed it to orange chicken.
I always go there with my sister when she comes to Montréal!! Always good service and good food!!
Wonderful service, amazing food! Even the small portions are sizable, worth the money.
The food is really excellent! The general tao so good, as well as the shrimp and fried wontons!!!! Everything was delicious!
Very nutritious food at decent prices.
Super fast service! The best Chinese restaurant I have ever eaten at! If you are passing through Montreal, it is worth the detour
A real find of a restaurant Very good well prepared meals as authentic as it gets Impressed with their fast efficient service which was welcoming as well It is a fairly nice decorated additionally with rich consistent wood paneling and matching wallpaper giving a nice atmosphere to dine Recommend this place Worth a visit !!!!
Great discovery, during a random walk. 2nd experience also satisfactory. Courteous staff, excellent food, very reasonable prices, varied dishes, varied wine and other drinks list... We can even take our surplus home with us (the portions are generous). I love this restaurant... Vegetarian options: Variety of tofu dishes and vegetable dishes... A very good choice
On July 6, we were celebrating a 50 anniversary and we mentioned that we had seafood allergies in our table. We order a wong tong soup and the waitress did not tell us that there was seafood in it. 2 members of my family could eat for the rest of the evening because of there symptoms. The waitress apologized, give us reactine and said that she will remove the soup from our bill. I was really mad about that mistake and we re deserved more than just a free soup. My mother and sister doesn t feel well because of her mistake. Instead of that problem, the food was good but unfortunately my family and i will definitely not come back!
Very authentic flavors. The waiter very patient and friendly. My favorites are fried wonton, seafood soup, garlic lobster, salt pepper pork chop, general tao, fung shing chicken and salted fish fried rice, fried calamary and fried shrimps
Food was amazing and prices for great. The server was very friendly and great guy all round. Will definitely be back soon
I cannot stress enough how amazing this place this. Peruvians -> if you want chifa, best place in Montreal. They even have Inca Kola! Nabo encurtido :) Vegetarian options: Tofu !
Very good
Its typical of Chinatown. For 35 years it has been our destination in this neighborhood. The dishes are always as good, generous and tasty. Try the Chinese-style shrimp! The atmosphere is pleasant and unpretentious. And we speak Chinese there!
Meh. Ordered Singapore noodles, beef fried rice and it wasn t even seasoned. No salt whatsoever. Was really boring and bland. Would not try again.
The wonton soup is amazing. Don t hesitate to order the large format
Best chinese food Ive ever had and I grew up in SF. In particular the wonton soup and the spring rolls are the best Ive ever had. They hand make their own stock and wontons. The roast duck is also made in house which is such a rarity! Really a last standing homage to the dying art of traditional southern chinese cuisine from family recipes. Truly a gem!
The food is good there. perfect service.
Found a dead bug (some kind of larvae) on a leaf in our wonton soup. Staff handled the situation very well, but we left after that.
A big rat ran under our table while we were eating, we told the owner but he just laughed at us.
Ordered on DoorDash. Young Chow Fried Rice and Beef with Black Bean Sauce. Both were excellent.
Best chifa Authentic
I ve been coming to this restaurant for the past 15 years. Maybe the restaurant s appearance is off putting for some (I often just take it to go) but the food is a must try. The plates are made for group meals, so it s ideal if you are many friends or a family. The prices are unbeatable. I highly recommend the following: pickled vegetables (a side dish), wonton soup, ½ roasted duck, general Tao, dried noodles with pork and mushrooms in bbq sauce. You won t regret coming here
Simple restaurant and good Chinese cuisine.
Our restaurant in Chinatown for over 35 years
Never again! My gooey General Tao Chicken made me feel like I was eating a freshly delivered placenta. Even my cats fresh vomit looks more appetizing. The Kraft peanut sauce on the dumplings was crunchy.... probably the sugar not broken down....
Best Asian restaurant in MTL
Very poor customer service, unable to speak French, and incomprehensible English.
There was a lot of fats inside the wonton
Friendly staff..great experience..delicious food
Excellent cantonese chow mein. Friendly service. Good price!
Very good and fast service.
Been going to this restaurant since 1980 and haven t been in a while. Boy, when it was sold, it certainly went downhill. Small portions and mediocre food at pricey prices. This is a place you want to walk by. So many better choices in Chinatown.
Very nice discovery. Even better when we come in large numbers. The portions are generous and affordable. The food was very good. The service was fast, we didnt even have to wait.
I love eating there in Chinatown in Montreal, excellent food and warm service. I recommend it if you like this style of dishes.
Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the food, but hopefully seeing empty plates in this photo would give you the confidence to come here. Five dishes + medium rice for five people. It was authentic HK style family food. I would come back. - ma po tofu - eggplant pot - salt and pepper calamari - yu choi - steamed fish filet
Great Chinese place
Very good Chinese restaurant. Cantonese noodles are the best in the world. Very crispy Fung Shing chicken. Very succulent Chinese shrimp. Finally, their Wonton soup is very good. New decor and administration. As prices have increased in everything, so have theirs. Enjoy your food ! Parking: Difficult parking.
Been going here for many years. The food is really good and not greasy. Some of the food selections come in different size portions which is great. Pricing is reasonable. Strongly recommend the rice sticks with beef in black bean sauce! The only reason I gave a four star is because they don t have regular egg rolls, only spring rolls. The won tons here are made in house, filledwith shrimp, very light and tasty. Excellent place.
Go here for a classic Chinese Canadian food experience. Taste the squid fried with salt and chili. The same as served as a starter at the necessary evil bar. Favorite for the orange fried beef.
Very warm welcome and very well served. We are really happy with our experience and we recommend it!
Very good
Cheap and really good
My latest delivery was quite disappointing. The lemon chicken which had thick chicken and light batter, now has thin slices of chicken with thick batter: exactly the opposite of what I want. The special won ton soup was also very average. -- So far, I have had delivery 3 times from this restaurant and the quality has been very good. I finally found a lemon chicken that has good amounts of chicken with a light batter on the outside. The vegetable fried rice has fresh tomatoes in it, making it pleasantly juicy and light. I also tried the soya chicken and BBQ pork; both were very good. My favorite though, is still the lemon chicken for now.
Come here for the wonton, crispy chicken and chow mein since I was a kid and the quality/quantity is still the same, excellent!
The atmosphere and service are good, true to what they were a few years ago. But we found the dishes really bland (in fact they are mostly sweet). Its a shame that the quality has declined; I would have preferred that the dishes cost more, but that they were good. We wont go back there.
Best Wonton soup in town! Can t rate the rest. Kid-friendliness: Kids friendly
After 7 years, this is still my favorite Chinese restaurant in Montreal. They always serve you green tea when you arrive. Everything tastes sooo good. Portions are for more than one person. 3/5 for atmosphere cause the bathroom was a little bit dirty this time. But the dining room is flawless.
Ever heard the expression « the dirtier the better »? Thats the place! Absolute best spot in China town.
Post-covid I hate to dog a small business but It cost sixty five dollars to get the worst Chinese food I ve ever had. A pork dish that was dry, tough and chewy, a hot and sour soup that tasted sour in all the wrong ways, a Cantonese chow mein with mushrooms that were both slimy and mushy at once, BUT the peanut butter dumplings were amazing. If we had just had those we would have been satisfied.
Been going there for probably 30 years, still as good. Favorite Chinese restaurant in MTL. The place is really not fancy but the food is delicious and reasonable price. Great if you are a small group so you can buy many plates and share
Great food. Highly recommend the duck and the noodles. Ask for crispy noodles. Everything was good.
Best Wonton soup in Montreal
Best Chinese restaurant in town!
Returning after several years, we were more than satisfied with the dishes. The taste was as we had known it two decades earlier. I recommend.
Absolutely excellent food, the vegetables were cooked just right and the chicken was so tender. My only complaint was that they did not have chili oil, only chili sauce
Very simple place but very well prepared and generously served food, thank you for being very good.
Love eating at this location. Great staff and good quality food
5 out of 5, would chop sue anytime again! Vegetarian options: Good for vegan friends, best for omnivores Kid-friendliness: Theres always kid families
Very good meals and good service for us.
Super nice stuff, very delicious food, highly recommended
Ive been going there for 35 years. The best Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. Lots of tasty and interesting recipes. Too bad it no longer opens for lunch since the pandemic.
The portions are so generous and delicious! We had the chow main (really tasty) bbq pork and the general tao (really good sauce and good frying!) with white rice: let me tell you that the two of us have lunches left! ;)
The general tao is to die for, the vegetables, the soup, everything was extraordinary. Well packaged, I stay on the south shore and everything was very hot.
One of my favorites. Their beef in black bean sauce has been my go to for years, and I love their wonton soup.
I have been coming here for over 20 years now. The best food! wonton is the best, Try the seafood basket! Not on the menu but if you ask they will serve. The best way to be able to try more plates is go with a few people and chose a different plate each , everything tastes awesome. I am a very picky eater!
One of my favorite restaurants ever, and a sure stop for me every time Im in Montreal.
Good food! Great and friendly service at the counter!
Bad food, poor cleanliness and terrible service.
I ordered a dish of vegetable noodles and after eating a portion I realized that there was a dead WORM in my dish.... (the worm must have probably come from the vegetables which were not washed properly )...really disgusting :(
Waiters were quite rude when we visited a few months ago. But the food was good.
I have been going there for 40 years I can say that the food is still good, thank you to all your team
Ive been going there since I was little, delicious and family-friendly, THANK YOU for being there, I love Fung Shing!
Best general Tao in Quebec!
Undercooked noodles
I often go there with colleagues for lunch and we are always well served. Generous portions and good food. Best wonton soup ever!
First time trying this restaurant. Wow just wow!!! Beef with broccoli Kung Po Style Shrimp Soo-guy style chicken Vegetable fried rice Spring roll Hot and sour soup Wonton soup This is our new Chinese restaurant!!!
Good service. Open on Christmas Day. Huge portions.
Not good at all too dirty and very bad service people dont smile etc.
Used to be 5 stars...
Very good food! You have to try Wonton soup, Pekin hot and sour soup, General tao, Crispy noodles with beef and blackbean sauce, home special rice with egg on the top, Singapour noodles, Sooguy chicken, Mapo tofu, Mix vegetables, . We went there since 19 years. Best General Tao and best hot & sour soup in Montreal. The place is not very beautiful but the food is awesome!
Good prices, good food. However, the places are rather shabby.
Very happy for those who enjoyed their meals but I will never eat there after seeing a VAT report on this restaurant fined twice in the space of 2 years for the presence of industrial quantities of excrement of mouse in every possible place. Look at the list of food inspections in the city of Montreal before going to a restaurant. It might help. Bon appetit
Be careful, presence of mice in the kitchen section of this restaurant according to the media
Extract from the Montreal newspaper A Chinese restaurant on Saint-Laurent Street is struggling with vermin that leaves droppings all over its kitchen. Rodent droppings, dried or fresh, were found everywhere when inspectors from the City of Montreal came to visit Fung Shing on March 9, 2018. The Cantonese and Sichuanese cuisine restaurant, located at 1102, boulevard Saint-Laurent, was fined $3,000 following a judgment dated April 26, 2019, the second of the same amount in less than six months
Messy restaurant flee this place
Vomitory, to know that this restaurant is still established on the street.
I dont know what to say other than 5 star rating
Really good
My favorite wonton soup ! Favorite chicken fried rice & favorite general tao chicken !!! The food is delicious ... the restaurant itself aint the cutest .... but Really the food is just soo worth it !!!
Fresh preparations for each customer, nothing reheated.
Chicken General Taho the best:)
Love their tofu stuffed with shrimp
Hi , once again this restaurant comes through...incredible food and 5 star service...today they even upped my order ...THANK YOU ...hope to be back in person soon with my spouse and daughter. (18 pcs and no green peppers ;-) Romi
I wasnt completely blown away by the quality, but it was all very good. Everyone ate well, the taste just wasnt exceptional. I think there could be more research into tastes. All in all good, we will probably order again, to give it another chance.
Fun shing is a classic. Food is always good. Been a fan for YEARS.
Small, fairly normal Chinese restaurant, the prices are affordable and satisfactory but in terms of quality it is not exceptional, there are much better. The images are beautiful yes, but the dumplings were bland and tasteless, we received a really awful radish sauce which did not go well with the dumplings, we ordered a General Tao, we received it all burnt and the peppers with it, the chicken was not cooked well and it was slimy and not crispy, we turned it over and the second one was burnt too. How to react when you pay for something that ruins your evening and the customer service was quite sad, the waiter barely spoke French and English you had to be very patient knowing that we spoke both languages well. In summary, the oolong tea was good, the spring rolls too, but the rest you already know. I recommend the Imperial restaurant for the best dumplings next time.
Quality dumplings.
The service is bad, they throw you out of the place if they have few people.
Best wonton soup Ive ever had in my life!! Super fast service!! I recommend this restaurant without hesitation!
Great spring rolls. Beef with broccoli was excellent.
Dim sum
The very best Chinese
Not delicious
Best won ton soup in the city!
Best in town !
Nice, good food!!!
Nice Staff. Food is delicious. Beware of portions. They are huge! Soup can easily be shared by 2. Same as main courses.
Did 2 big orders and was pleased with both. Food is great with fair prices.
Authentic chinese food in Montreal. Being away from home for 2 weeks, I was missing Chinese food. So glad to find a place that cooks it like it should be rather than modified chinese food. Two of us had a whole lobster and a plate of chinese broccoli (Kailan) fried with garlic with a bowl of rice each all downed with a pot of chinese tea. Portions were generous to thats all we could manage. Food was delicious. We were stuffed at the end. Yearning of chinese food was satisfied. Price was reasonable - a total of $48 before the tip. Service was friendly. Staff were polite. The place isnt posh but for Asians, its the taste of the food that counts. Highly recommended for authentic Cantonese food!
Service to say the least very strange but not pleasant! ZERO food! Cleanliness of the place ZERO! We will never go back there again!
Small typical restaurant in Chinatown. The wonton soup and pineapple chicken are excellent, but the dim sum left something to be desired. Fast and efficient service.
Unhelpful service. Barely thawed dish. Stomach ache when leaving the restaurant. $2 THE small frozen roll tax free! A scandal.
Delicious food in down town Montreal
small Chinese restaurant, Very good
Attentive staff, food is cheap and competently made.
Awesome staff, courteous and tentative, small restaurant but spacious tables. Great food for a very good price, with a generous tastey portion .
Don t let the look of this place fool you! It s pretty dingy looking, but the food was really good! Also priced reasonably, would definitely come again.
By far the worst Chinese restaurant I have ever experienced, overpriced and small portions , stay away....
A real authentic Chinese restaurant. Take several dishes and share
Ive been going there for years, good service and excellent meal, wide variety of dishes.
Excellent service!! Very good food and affordable price. I recommend
You want a tip from me??
Very goid Chiffa, the duck wow just wow
Overpriced junk Chinese food.I paid them 18 bucks for simply boiling pork with broccoli.I however ordered babercue pork.Even the Chinese food from the mall that I pay 10 bucks for is way way better.
Kettle fish the best.
Very good soup and dumpling for the rest my experience was disappointing.
Bland dumplings, dough too thick and undercooked to supposedly be fried. Duck bathing in its water with the strangest sauce. Burnt rice tasting like the bottom of the pan. Raised side too fatty.
authentic
Very good Chinese restaurant
Definitely wont be winning any awards for decor or service but cheap good eats.
Crab was bigger than head and 2 belly full. I love this place I eat at yesterday
Average take-out portion. Very fatty noodles without much topping. The restaurant doesnt seem very clean. My stomach has more or less digested it well.
One of the best places to eat general tao chicken
Best wonton soup I ve ever had, yes this place may look old but the food (Wonton soup especially) is delicious and well-priced.
Remains the whole familys favorite for decades in spite of eating chinese in over 30 countries...
Restaurant Fung Shing fined for unhealthy food preparation conditions. Fung Shing restaurant fined for unsanitary preparation conditions.
I was about to go there and checked online for the fines and infractions. Man.. I think they have the most expensive of 2019,yet..so I mean, do what you want. I wont risk it. Total Amount of Fines: $6000 Number of Infractions: 2 Address: 1102 Boul. Saint-Laurent Infractions: The place or vehicle must be free of contaminants, pollutants, any kind of animal including insects and rodents or their excrement.
Very good comfort Chinese food at affordable price. The presence of the owner daughter tonight is a plus. She is always smiling, knows how to welcome clients. She should be there more often in the evening to retain customers.
Food no longer tastes like it used to. Much less good. It was the last time.
Best chinese food restaurant in MTL.
Nailed the hot and soup and wontons !
Good taste for a good price
