312 Saint-Paul St W, Montreal, Quebec H2Y 2A3, Canada
A lively restaurant with subdued lighting, stone walls & a European-inspired daily market course.
It was my boyfriends birthday and he had also just completed his capstone project, so I wanted to find a place that would have most of the things he liked (oysters, truffle, beef) and I was throughly pleased with just looking at the menu. Now, once we got there, I was immediately taken aback by the atmosphere - it’s comfortable, it’s intimate and ultimately very pleasant. The lights are dimmed to perfection and your table is topped off with a cute little lamp for added ambiance. Our waitress greeted us rather quickly and she was truly a ray of sunshine (if she has a tattoo on her right hand, you’re in very good hands). Mutual respect went a long way given how she was very nice and even ordered complementary vegetables for us with a lovely vinaigrette. Now, for the appetizers. We had ordered the BBQ Oysters (6) and the chicken liver parfait. Both were to die for. The chicken liver parfait is 100% a Christmas dish, and I recommend eating it by hand and not leaving the bread behind. Everything works together so well. The BBQ oysters were delicious, and were not too rich in flavor - they were perfect. For the main, I highly recommend anyone listen to the specials of the evening because you might be in for a surprise - beef Wellington! They only make about 10 a night, and we had gotten there at 6:30 so we managed to order one, and it was delicious (comes with mashed potatoes and a truffle sauce). There was also a special spaghetti for the evening, but we had unfortunately let it go cold given how we were encompassed by the Wellington, so if you were to order two mains, give them both even amounts of attention at the same time. Eventually we moved onto the desserts, we had ordered all four of them; - the trou normand: ordered without the alcohol, and thus it was a lemon pineapple sorbet and it was honestly my favourite one. Call me simple but a nice sorbet is a solid way to end a delicious meal. - Panna cotta: if you have a sweet tooth, this one is for you. It’s definitely a rich dessert with many flavour and textures at once, but it’s not overwhelming. The raspberry and the hazelnut chocolate complement each other nicely, but there certainly is a battle for which flavour ought to stand out most. - olive oil cake: I didn’t particularly get to try since my boyfriend practically inhaled it, but he gave it 5/5 stars. - chocolate pudding with the madeleines: the madeleines are freshly baked and have a simple flavouring, but that’s what makes them special after a flavoursome evening. The salted chocolate pudding was definitely something new for us, and I personally recommend maybe mixing it given how they sprinkle extra salt on the top (crazy salty if you scoop off the top without mixing), however I liked how it wasn’t overly sweet by any means and reminded me a bit of the authentic flavour of chocolate itself. Drinks were very nice, although I do recommend you ask a bit more about the flavour profile to see if it matches what you normally like - like the forbidden fruit smelled lovely but interestingly enough tasted a bit smoky. Small anecdote: we had complementary Aperol-like shots to celebrate his birthday and capstone. Very very sweet gesture. To the owner, kitchen and staff: stand proud. Throughly impressed by the service and food this evening. I certainly do see myself coming here again in the near future. Thank you for your hospitality and attention to detail.
Food is good. Service is better. Phillip really took care of us! I'd recommend the duck and gnocchi. Located in old port, I would recommend.
Full 5 star experience. Everything from the food, service and restaurant vibe was perfect. The BBQ oysters did not disappoint. My only regret was not ordering 6 more. The farm salad was very flavourful but also fresh. Their braised beef (signature meal) was excellent. (If you don’t love celery then I’d say choose something else since their potato purée does have a strong celery taste to it) Waitress was very knowledgeable, showed confidence in the menu and also caught on that it was a special occasion so she brought out a sparkler. Last but not least - drinks were also made to perfection. Paid parking lot 10 steps away from the resto came in handy. Can’t wait to be back - specifically for the BBQ oysters.
I ordered the grilled octopus, the squash with foie gras, the paella barroco, and the butcher's cut (an 18oz ribeye steak). The grilled octopus was delicious, though $35 for the portion served felt a bit pricey. The foie gras didn’t quite suit my taste. The standout dish of the night was definitely the paella, easily the best I’ve had in Montreal. Unfortunately, the ribeye steak was very DISAPPOINTING. Priced at $75 and meant to be shared by two, it came with a choice of sauce (we selected truffle butter). However, when the steak arrived, it was already quite COLD, so much so that the butter wouldn’t even melt when placed on top. Normally, I would have rated this meal 4 stars despite the mishaps, but a final issue made it hard to do so. When my partner mentioned to the waitress that the steak had been underwhelming (both in temperature and quality) and that we hadn’t been told it would cost $75, she responded rather coldly, insisting she had informed us of the price—though we hadn’t been told. While we likely would have ordered it anyway, given it’s a reasonable price, the attitude at the end left us feeling let down.
Went there for my birthday, locals love it here.so had to give it a try. Live the rustic decorations. Small restaurant so make reservations. We started w paper crane cocktail ( a twist on paper plane) it was good but it looked like a 2 oz drink. The glass looked very ball. See photo In NY the get 4 oz drinks. Other than that the food is great. Ayube the waiter/Sommelier:/owner was very friendly n attentive. I got a nice sparklers w after dinner drinks to celebrate my birthday. Very cool.
We came all the way from Toronto and have to say this was the best dining experience we have ever had! From the service, to the atmosphere, and to the food and drinks, you could really tell they put a lot of attention to detail to everything. Every flavour profile was so thought out, we were amazed by every plate brought to us. We will definitely be making the trip back to come here and recommending this spot to all our friends!
Barroco is a cozy, intimate dinner restaurant with French/Euro-inspired items that are almost always a hit. The chef often has interesting specials that are worth exploring, especially if they involve red meat. My best tip would be to order a side of grilled, buttered sourdough bread (for a fee of $5), as most dishes come with a lot of sauce. The bread can be used to scoop it all up for a tasty finish.
Amazing tastebud experience. I tried the tasting, which consisted of 5 preset courses and a desert. The taste and variety of each course had my senses running. Hard to choose my favorite course. Marc at the bar held down the entertainment and knowledge of the courses and their pairings. I highly suggest sitting at seat 1 or 2 at the bar to see the acrobats of Chef and his staff in the kitchen making this all come together. Definitely would recommend for a nice, relaxing, no rush meal.
Great food and personalized service!
This was the first place we visited in Montreal, and Im so glad we made reservations here! The food was phenomenal. Our waiter was so charming and even made suggestions of where we should go once he knew we were on vacation. The restaurant itself is so cozy and has a very homey feeling. I would love to come back sometime!
Poached halibut was delicious. Drinks were very good and the service was great. Pricey, but a nice date spot
Fabulous!!!
I have enjoyed every bit of my experience in this gem
But what a beautiful evening! The dishes were wonderful and the whole team was able to adapt to my condition. I never once felt like it bothered them. I really enjoyed my evening, thank you very much!
Pure perfection! If you are in Montreal, you have to dine at Barroco!
Exceptional, classic Quebec food, beautifully presented in a historic building. Wonderful cocktails, a unique wine list and very pleasant staff. Fantastic experience!
Great dishes, good flavour and innovative. Reception can be better. Bar service is great.
Drinks were excellent, very creative options and the bartender is knowledgeable and passionate
Nice food but even better service
Have been several times and this place is amazing. The food is incredible and the staff make sure you are taken care of. Definitely get a reservation and if you enjoy watching good cocktails getting made, sit at the bar.
Context we went there for my birthday with two friends at the end of August. Certainly the restaurant is beautiful, however the waiter and the service are poor. Our server was very condescending, as soon as my friends mentioned that they were going to share their starter the attitude of the staff changed. The next table was English speaking tourists and let me tell you, the waiter is excellent at profiling, because his service for them was much better than ours! In terms of food, I liked the octopus starter, a little expensive for the quantity, but taste-wise it was good. The Paella, I personally didnt like it too much. We tried their duck dish, if I remember correctly, and it was good too. In the end, whether a table spends $100 or $500, we work for this money, we dont steal it, so treat your customers with dignity!
Felt like I was in the holiday movie. About 10 tables, warm, cozy. Amazing service and food was to die for. Bbq oysters, the braised beef was insane and the olive oil cake!!!
This place is perfection in every way. It was completely full and so busy but our server never seemed flustered or rushed in any way. She was lovely, provided impeccable service and never missed an opportunity to pour our wine. The food was top notch. I had the beef tartare and poached halibut and my husband had the chicken liver parfait and braised beef. Every bite was amazing. Such a memorable meal in a beautiful setting. You definitely need a reservation and rightly so. Fantastic all round.
Marc, bartender-server was amazing so knowledgeable and professional .he made the evening so enchanting
If you are looking for a unique, fine dining experience this is the place! Whether your celebrating your birthday or just visiting Montreal for the first time like we were, Barraco is such a treat. As it is a smaller, intimate setting reservations are a must but when we showed up without one the host went out of his way to try to squeeze us in. Due to demand, we ended up making a reservation for the very next day and it was worth it! The fantastic staff, particularly the bartender Mark, went above and beyond to make this dining experience worth every moment. I couldn t recommend this place more!
Here s a review you can use: I had an unforgettable dining experience at BARROCO in Old Port, Montreal. From the moment we walked in, the service was impeccable. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly, making us feel welcome and well taken care of. The food was absolutely divine, with each dish bursting with flavor and presented beautifully. You can truly taste the quality and freshness of the ingredients. The ambiance was just perfect charming, cozy, a hint of eccentricity in a warm atmosphere that complements the historic charm of Old Port. Whether you re looking for a romantic evening or a delightful meal with friends, BARROCO is a must-visit!
Absolutely wonderful! The food is very tasty. The artic char was soft and delicious.
I was waiting to dine. I should have waited more The paella was more like Jambalaya The bbq oysters were delicious I do not recommend
The tasting menu and service were both absolute perfection, highly recommend for a romanic date night or celebration dinner. I couldnt have asked for a better birthday dinner and cant wait to go back to Montreal just to eat here again!
Very small and cozy restaurant. Great service at first. Turns out, they charged me 32$ for a Paloma drink. Really! Are we at the Ritz ? Also, they have like 4 choices of food on the menu, very limited. But seriously how can a normal basic drink as tequila and pamplemousse juice can cost as much as a gnocchi meal ? Do not waist your time. Not worth it.
Amazing experience at Barocco! The atmosphere is elegant, the food was delicious, and the service was outstanding. The wine selection was perfect, and every detail made the evening special. Highly recommend for a great night out!
Amazing restaurant.. fantastic experience, one of the most delicious food Ive had. Small restaurant, less space but good environment. You can feel the energy in the restaurant. Overall great experience
Barroco was a delightful find. I was intrigued by the decor, and more importantly, the service was incredible. My husband and I started off meeting a wonderful waitress by the name of Alessandra. Alessandra was very helpful in choosing my cocktail for the evening along with our scrumptious dinner. Along with dinner, we wanted to order a bottle of red wine that would pair nicely with the paella we ordered. Alessandra immediately introduced us to a sommelier by the name of Phillip. He was definitely an expert in his field. Phillip shared his passion and experience in describing a bottle of wine that would make our palettes pop. We scored the best bottle of wine with our chosen meal. That particular bottle he chose was absolutely perfect. Thank you, Phillip, for helping us. The evening does not stop there. Alessandra, the waitress circles back to us and offers us a dessert menu. My husband and I had one glass, each of the red wine left to enjoy. Instead of dessert, we asked Alessandra if she could bring a cheese platter with brioche bread. She did just that. Phillip also circled back to us, and once he learned we were essentially having cheese and bread for our dessert with our wine, Phillip was very excitedand said, Nice choice. Barroco, you have a wonderful restaurant, but what makes it even better is your staff offering their best cutomer experience. Thanks again for making every one of my husbands, and of course, my taste buds explode!!
Fantastic food and cute decor!
Visiting Barroco in Old Montreal was an unforgettable experience, especially thanks to their phenomenal Beef Shortribs, which was hands-down the best meal of my life. We opted for the Menu du Chef, and every dish was a delightful surprise, masterfully prepared and bursting with flavors. The ambiance of the restaurant offers a cozy yet elegant backdrop perfect for a special evening, complemented by staff who are both attentive and welcoming, making you feel right at home. Everything about Barroco was perfect, from start to finish. I m already looking forward to my next visit to try those incredible shortribs again. If you find yourself in Old Montreal, Barroco is a must-visit spot you wont regret it!
The Short Ribs were amazing and the Paella was the best Ive ever had.
Food was great and great atmosphere!
The food and service where excellent. The restaurant is very loud and it was very warm.
Exquisite. Food. Fun. Service. Thank you Mark and Team.
Short ribs were absolutely delicious. Sam, our server/bartender was very friendly.
I have never eaten such good low rib in my entire life!!!!!! 12 hours of cooking and what can we say about the sauce!!!!!!! Wowww and then the waitress, she is adorable I recommend 100%
This place slaps. Sit at the bar and get a steak
Food tasted great, very fresh and new flavors, our waitress Alex was delightful, the atmosphere was very cozy, especially great for a rainy day
Fantastic experience for my partners birthday. Service was great and food was 10/10. The hen was particularly delicious. Would absolutely recommend for someone looking for a delicious, high quality meal in old Montreal. Food : 5/5
Incredible! Some of the best food and service Ive ever had. It was a pleasure to eat here.
Wonderful and heartwarming spot. Excellent food and outstanding service by Alexandra. She really knows her stuff and the way she talks about each dish makes you want it. Which we exactly did and were absolutely not disappointed. Well be coming again and again
Truly one of the best dining experiences I ve ever had. The service from the host to the captain was incredible, every need was anticipated. The food was phenomenal and would recommend the chefs tasting menu to all. The wine menu was thorough and the pairing accompanied the tasting menu perfectly. The beef short ribs are a must order dish. Can t wait to come back!
This place was amazing. Id highly reccomend. Service and ambiance were 5 star. The beef tartar and beef short rib were were 5 out of 5. My wife got the guinea hen was very good but we both agree the the beef short rib was best.
Nice location and friendly staff. Light, fruity cocktails were excellent. Heavier cocktails were not well balanced. Food was all excellent, but some dishes were better than others. Beef tartare was exceptional as was the short ribs. Oeuf mollet was surprisingly good, while mushrooms appetizer was surprisingly not good. It was hit or miss. Also was a busy night and the place seemed understaffed and a bit frantic. I would try it again to give them a second chance!
One of the best meals I enjoyed in Montreal!!! French Italian, what a fusion!!! Puuuum of flavors . Textures, temperature 100z
Very cozy place to eat and have a great time. Food was delicious. Esme service was great
A must-have!
Had the most amazing time here with the food, the service and the fun conversations with our host Alexandra. Definitely a 100% recommended for anyone in Montreal
This rather small and private restaurant has an amazing ambiance and decor. The food is exceptionnaly good and well presented. I recommend the tasting menu which comes in 5 services plus dessert. The value and the portion sizes are also very good. The service was great as we had a server present every dish that was served and always keep our glasses full. Highly recommend!
Was an awesome experience, servers were so nice and very helpful, very nice interior of the restaurant, love the atmosphere, food is delicious and is worth trying everything! Beef tartare was magnificent, the more changes when I walked in, love the lighting and comforting seats, having farm to table is refreshing to hear knowing the food will be fresh and yummy, from appetizers to dessert simply the best!
Incredible food, great service with experienced and very welcoming staff. I recommend to any foodie !
Excellent experience from the ambiance to the service to the cocktails and food. Had the short rib entree which was excellent. Small intimate dinning area, so cute
One of the best meals we have had, not just in Montreal (we are visiting). We did the tasting menu, which was innovative but also classic. They also offer fantastic cocktails sans alcohol (get the Pampelmouse!!). The Quebec mushrooms, paella, and the guinea hen were our favorite savory bites (as well as the brioche), and the chocolate cremeux was a beautiful (and unexpectedly nuanced) finish. Execution was flawless across the board. Service was flawless and welcoming. The decor is fun and eclectic but cozy. I cant say enough good things! Vegetarian options: The mushrooms are a must!
Im not sure its worth the hype or the price. I will start with the nice young lady that we had serving us was very good. Happy to be there, and energetic. She was good. But that is kind of where it ends. The host seating you fills your glass with water, and spills as much on the table as gets in the glass,.and if your phone happens to be there, its gonna get wet. No acknowledgement or clean up. Also happened each time he came by and topped up the water. So the table was pretty wet by the time we were done. Our nice servers shift ended and she had to pass us off to another person, who never did show up. We had to ask the host for our bill. The building itself is a nice old building. Pretty small, but a nice decor. But super loud. Going out for a nice meal shouldnt mean you need to yell across the table. The food was also only in the ok category. I had a better meal for a better price the day before at a less fancy place. So if you are going to be able to say you have been there, Im sure youll be happy, but otherwise Im sure there are better choices that dont cost you $25 for parking on top of the $100/person meal.
We had a great time! Food with a real taste of home, careful presentation but in the family spirit of this intimate place, friendly and warm service.. I cant wait to show it to my friends!
Food was good but not memorable. The waiter brought us two shooters in the beginning we didnt request and said it was because we were appreciated customers and then also brought us a dessert we didnt order at the end and at first we were overjoyed with the amazing service until the bill arrived and we were charged $11 for each shooter on top of the full priced dessert. I thought that was incredibly tacky and dishonest of them and would not go back for this reason.
Their Paella is 11/10. Never change that dish. Had to take another one to go after our meal. Excellent service as well and a great vibe/atmosphere.
This place was amazing. Will definitely come again.
Beautiful intimate restaurant in Old Montreal with character. Service was amazing. Espresso Martinis were really really good and the steak was perfect!
The service is at Barroco is good, but our food was not worth what we paid. My steak was incredibly tough, which was not an issue with how it was cooked. It was not a good quality piece of beef. My wife and I arrived when they opened and were the first or second table served. Our food was room temperature and cold when it arrived. Overall, not a great experience.
Amazing venue & friendly staff
It was a great experience, we enjoyed every minute of our night. Thank you
We arrived early to our reservation, and were offered complimentary prosecco while waiting. The atmosphere is so cool and the staff is so incredibly attentive and kind... Even when I spilled some wine on myself. The food was really good. I dont know if our pallets arent up to snuff or a couple our dishes were off from what we expected for the price point (HIGH). We enjoyed it overall.
Beef tartare with sour sauce was delicious. Steak were soooo good! Seafood rice was a little bit too salty.
The experience was absolutely incredible. The atmosphere was inviting and beautifully decorated. The food was top-notch, truly some of the best I ve ever had. Every dish was authentically prepared and bursting with flavor. The ingredients were fresh, and the presentations were impeccable. Our waitress, Alexandra, was amazing. She was friendly, full of life, and exceptionally professional. Alexandra s warm personality and attentive service made our dining experience even more enjoyable! She went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed and made excellent recommendations. !!!
We went for our anniversary and the service was great and the Hen was excellent!
Stopped in on a solo trip and had one of the top 3 meals of my life! The short rib was to die for! Sat at the bar and the bartender was very helpful and friendly!
Food was top notch. Service was amazing. Unexpectedly great music. Mmm good!
Excellent food, great staff, and a charming spot.
Awesome spot, fantastic food!
Top meal, pleasant staff thank you for everything
From the moment we entered to the moment we left, we had an exceptional time. Subdued lighting for a romantic dinner, beautiful rustic decor with some comedic hints on the hanging dishes, quick and receptive service, food that made us take a moment to close our eyes and really enjoy the experience happening in our mouths (lol). We decided to try the Tasting Menu and our expectations were exceeded. Highly recommend!!!
The food and cocktails are very good. Our waitress, Alexandra, was lovely, she explained the menu to us very well and was very attentive to our needs. She allowed us to have an excellent evening. Thank you very much Alexandra! -The three friends :)
This restaurant is an experience. The decor and atmosphere is gorgeous. The staff make you feel special and welcome. The food is up there as some of the best and Ive been to many fine dining restos. GET THE SHORT RIB.
Went with a group and shared food so got to try a large number of dishes from the menu - everything was delicious. Service was on point and very friendly. You can t beat the decor of old Montreal.
I am so disappointed on my last visit here . We had a great dinner but it took a turn when we asked for a basket of bread and they have no bread or fries unfortunately they said, BUT they have a homemade brioche that s on the menu to order if we d like Please look at that one slice of brioche that came on the plate for $18 , are they out of they re mind??? It just ruined our night and we continued to dine and wine and went our way and not sure when I ll be back. What a shame
Charming, cozy bistro with friendly, attentive service. My monkfish was superb, served with bacon cracklings. Hubby had the veal and a papery thin mille feuille of potatoes. Also excellent. Great selection of wines. Prices were not astronomical. The original edifice was an 150 year old stable. Old-timey lamps at every table give off a warm glow, a wild boars head trophy and ancient stone walls make this place a keeper. Dietary restrictions: We were asked
This is the number one restaurant in Montreal. Food is insane. Drinks are unique and their wine selection goes well with their menu. To top it off, the service is unmatched. My wife and I spend every special event there since the day their doors opened (minus Covid days) We are lucky as Montrealers to have such a quality restaurant.
It s been a tradition for me that ever since first going to Barroco in 2015, I go there every single time I m Montréal. It never ever disappoints; one of my favorite restaurants in the whole world.
I reserved 1 month in advance the best table for my boyfriends birthday I had the worst table on the edge of the front door, 0 courteous service and really very ordinary food for $400.00...nothing justifies it this VERY disappointing price!!
At the top! A special mention for the chef who made the starters. I recommend!
A little expensive if we compare to other similar places but everything was very good: the oysters to die for, the fish very well cooked, the desserts good and original. Wines too expensive, but selection of spirits at the top
We had a very pleasant evening. The welcome, the service and the food were there! It s a very good address in old Montreal! Well see you soon
Everything we ate and drank was exquisite. They have a refreshing cocktail menu with unique combinations that go down very smoothly. The dinner menu was equally impressive. The brioche melted in our mouths, the octopus was grilled to perfection and the beef tartare was to die for. The beef short rib was so tender I peeled it apart with my fork. The service was a little lackluster and the music was a bit to loud making it hard for us to hear each other at times. Despite those small short comings we will most likely be back for more!
It was a special night in the context of Montreal en Lumières, with an excellent chef invited to cook with Jeremie. The menu was excellent but we waited a lot the dishes and some of them were not very warm, which sadly made the experience less enjoyable. Otherwise the place has a nice atmosphere, I recommend to check out!
This is a top notch restaurant in Montreal!
Early dinner because the restaurant is small, which was fine with us. We tried the tasting menu for two and every course was superb. I was a bit skeptical about some of the wines no, go with it, they pair beautifully with the dishes. Great neighborhood to hang around, the sommelier was the best.
Amazing experience! Great date night spot! Food
Great food, service and ambience.
Great experience in Montreal. The beef short rib was astonishing as well as the brioche entrée and beef tartare. Spectacular wine selection and a well experienced staff that work confidently to make you feel like youre in good hands. Will definitely recommend. The ambience was wonderful as well. Couldnt be improved. Thanks to all staff.
I wanted to try this restaurant for a very long time so I went there for my birthday the reservation was scheduled for 9:30 p.m. we waited around 40 minutes standing at the entrance for our table, despite the very long wait I would like to point out that the young man at reception offered us a glass of bubbles while waiting but we dont drink alcohol so we refused. Despite that, it was still a very nice gesture on his part... We were then assigned to our table after 15 minutes of waiting the waiter came to see us and we knew what we wanted as starters The tartare and the octopus we asked for extra chips to accompany the tartare when the waiter came back with the starters had been forgotten so we told him to let it go and that it was ok so he came back with the chips telling us that it was an oversight by the kitchen The starters were delicious, the tartare was delicious, the average portions were good size for 2 people. We moved on to the main dishes LOW RIB OF BEEF MAPLE & AGED BALSAMIC and PAELLA BARROCO The low rib was tender and tasty, the sauce was very tasty, one of the best I have tasted, accompanied by its mash 10/10 On the other hand, the Paella disappointed me enormously, it had no taste, it was very bland and lacked flavor! The scallops were successful but the prawns were way overcooked too bad I was expecting an explosion of flavor. Then for dessert the chocolate mousse was wawww exquisite with fried capers and there was even olive oil which I loved.. In the reservation made it was written if possible to have a small candle for my birthday but hey they didnt pay attention! To conclude the evening we ask for the bill and pay. I then look and see that there is an extra dish which has been charged so I try to attract the attention of the waiters but dont look at us so it takes at least 15 mins for him to come to the next table and then I tell him can you come . He comes and I explain to him that on the bill I have a dish of Mushrooms for $23 which I was charged to my great surprise he dares to tell me no you took the mushrooms as a starter I persist with him and told him no not at all we had the tartare and the octopus there were only 2 of us he told me again no you had them!!!! At this point, stuck, I told him I took photos, I showed him and I saw that despite having shown him the photos he still had doubts .I felt so insulted and embarrassed! He leaves and comes back saying do you want a drink? Or you want to get a refund, we tell him to get a refund since we dont drink!!!! The icing on the cake, he leaves without even telling us that he was sorry that it was a misunderstanding, nothing at all, it seems like we were asking him for charity since we were asking for a refund... The young man who was at reception who had made a nice gesture at the beginning came with the terminal to make the reimbursement and explained to us that the table before us had been offered this entry that he had not removed it from the table and that he was sorry.. I was really disappointed with the behavior of the waiter, I never felt insulted to this extent!!! Parking: Take a taxi, impossible to find parking in this area
We enjoyed wonderful meals, great service, excellent wine pairings. Felt like we were a world away!
Service and atmosphere was wonderful. We had the mushroom appetizer and it was very good. Definitely recommend that. My short ribs had a reduction that was thick and like molasses. It was too rich and hard to eat a lot of. Parsnip puree needed seasoning and the steak my husband ordered needed to be seasoned. But the experience was very nice. The food needs more attention
Great place with delicious food and a cool feel. Just be aware that special diets arent accommodated all that well. Our vegetarian diner had a tough time getting something.
Absolutely delicious meal & nice service. Very cute/ cozy atmosphere
Amazing time. Best short ribs Ive ever had. Great staff. Fun atmosphere.
The service was truly impeccable. For the food, the starter, a brioche accompanied by cheese, radish and pickle, was a real delight. Its at the main meal that this is wasted. My duck breast was cooked unevenly. I was left with pieces that looked blue and were very hard to cut. The endives lacked seasoning but the carrot puree and juice were excellent. My girlfriend had the paella and the prawns were overcooked and the paella didnt have the burnt crust that a paella should have. The poached apple semifreddo dessert, each component was delicious separately but together it went in all directions. The couple at the table next to us were lucky enough to be offered a tartare because they hesitated between two starters. Super nice but enough to make us jealous. That said, I remain a little disappointed with my experience, especially as a fan of Top Chef, we thought we would be able to see Jérémie who wasnt there. Oh yes and if you go there expect to pay for your sparkling water even if the waiter offers you the choice between still or sparkling water!
The staff is exceptional, and the culinary experience is truly outstanding! A solid 10/10!
Very warm atmosphere, well-executed cuisine but a bit long waiting times. Good address
Very good restaurant the food was good. On the other hand, space is limited. Overall I liked the experience
Hefty bill but the tasting menu is completely worth it
Marc at the bar made me a personalized drink based on my taste and It was perfect! Also Charles the waiter was super friendly and efficient, will be coming back!
Thank you, I wish to come at list one more time. Your place is amazing
My better half and I embarked on a gastronomic odyssey at Barroco, a gem nestled in the heart of Montreal. Celebrating her birthday, we sought something extraordinary and, oh boy, did Barroco deliver with a capital B! Enveloped in an aura of romantic lighting and the classic elegance of white tablecloths, Barrocos ambiance whispered chic in every corner. It was like stepping into a scene from an old Hollywood movie, minus the black-and-white filter and plus some seriously good food. The adventure began with their six-course tasting menu, a culinary carousel that had us spinning with delight. Priced at CAD 85 per person with an additional CAD 60 for the wine pairing, it was a bargain for a ticket to flavor town. First off, the deviled eggs with bottarga set the stage a playful twist on a classic, much like the restaurant itself. Then, the roasted wild mushrooms arrived, bathed in mushroom and black garlic jus, paired with a Petit Chablis that danced on the palate. The grilled octopus was a sea-sational journey, with steamed fingerling potatoes and paprika, accompanied by a glass of Alsace Riesling that sang harmonies with each bite. Then came the showstopper, the Paella Barroco, a mosaic of seafood and chorizo, each spoonful a mini fiesta, perfectly matched with a Spätburgunder. But hold your forks! The beef short ribs oh, those ribs! Boneless, tender, and glazed with maple and aged balsamic, they were like a meaty lullaby, paired with a robust Dao Reserva. Finally, the sweet clover semifreddo with confit apple landed softly on our taste buds, a sweet ending to a fabulous meal, with a Gailloc Doux whispering a gentle goodnight. Barrocos commitment to tradition serving ladies first added a touch of chivalry to the experience. The 5 to 10-minute interlude between courses was a thoughtful touch, allowing flavors to linger and conversations to bloom. In summary, Barroco is not just a meal; its a culinary sonnet, a love letter to the art of dining. Happy birthday to my wife, and cheers to Barroco for a night to remember!
The food was delightful, the atmosphere was super relaxed and sophisticated and the service was fantastic. We really appreciated to cocktail recommendations and the smooth service.
Love this place
Absolutely horrendous! First time visiting the place. Reserved a table for 945 and waited for 30 minutes while watching people who spoke french and came after us get tables !! The host was rude and extremely cold / discriminating !! Unbelievable experience from such a highly rated place. Disappointing.
Beware - not as cozy as it would appear Primary reason for the 4 stars is the music was crazy loud. Some may enjoy the so-called energy but if you are drawn to this place because of descriptions of cozy and intimate, that sort of describes it without the music. Small, elegantly lit, exposed stone, view to kitchen all are great. Add in 8 bookshelf speakers hanging from the ceiling (I counted) in a space approximately 800 square feet, with an overzealous person at the controls, and the ambience is ruined. That said food is fantastic, and service is frenetic while reasonably friendly at the same time.
Special mention for the cocktails, wild mushrooms, low rib of beef and Mont Blanc.
I went there for the first time and was really impressed by the quality of the food and taste. But... We ordered the tasting menu along with the wine pairings. It would have been perfect but the plates came too fast and we ended up having three glasses of wine each on the table by the time we got the fourth plate. If I may offer a suggestion: either allow more time to taste each wine pairing, or serve half sized portions of wine. Together, we wasted about $100 worth of very good wine... Will go back again for sure but will opt for the menu à la carte.
The food was beautiful, the staff was beautiful and the place is beautiful. The drinks are very nicely made, and the food is perfectly balanced. The brioche was delicate and the cheese and butter that it came with were a wonderful paring. The salad with anchovies and bacon was delicious. The hen had a wonderful creamy sauce and soft mushrooms. The pasta with ricotta was truly delight. We had a dessert that we ate so quickly I forgot to take a picture but it had a very nice apple confit on top. Lastly the staff was not only gorgeous but they were funny, knowledgeable and attentive. I d love to come back and get through the entire menu.
The food was fantastic, especially the desserts. The service was excellent as well and we truly valued the recommendation given . Highly recommend
Excellent cuisine and extremely dedicated Staff provided one of the best dining experiences we had in Old Montreal. Highly recommended. Will definitely visit again. Mark and Karlyn.
I guess I went in with big expectations from what I saw on the website! Appetizers : we had the ham which was basically prosciutto with 2 pieces of grilled bread and 4 tiny pieces of picked vegetables. Anchovies on bread pretty good Devilled eggs at $5 per half an egg nothing Oysters very fresh and good Main courses braised beef was very dry and liked warm at best Rib steak was good mashed potato cold Overall it was ok but nothing special We still had a nice evening
Exceptional food and wine, great service, warm and cozy setting -- perfection!
This was one of the best meal I ever had. The restaurant is in a great location, great ambiance, the staff is knowledgeable and everything was nothing but great. 5 star! Recommended dishes
Good but quite expensive for what it is
Fresh, tasty, and huge paella. And the service is awesome too. What more can you ask for? Don t forget to make reservations in advance as the place is small.
Exceptional food and service. The beef Wellington was my favourite. The decor and setting is lovely and feels very cosy. I would highly recommend.
Great meal. Recommend
Warm place and good service. On the other hand, we were disappointed with the food, especially for the price. We had the Beef Wellington. For a dish for two the portions were ridiculous, the dough was completely burnt, the food tasteless and dry. Definitely not the best place for a beef Wellington.
Amazing Food...Fresh & tasty.Staff was really nice and the wait time was reasonable considering the taste.Worth the wait.Highly Recommend
Chosen on the recommendation of Lonely Planet, we chose this international restaurant for our first dinner in the city. The menu is not very varied (like many other restaurants in Montreal) and offers both meat and fish. We opted for a revisited paella, based on fish and chorizo, quite tasty, and for beef cooked for a long time and therefore very soft (albeit fatty) seasoned with a sauce based on maple syrup and balsamic vinegar. Good! The staff is friendly (mainly to encourage customers to leave a tip when paying, a must in Canada ) and the place is small but very welcoming. High prices compared to those we are used to in Italy (even in a city like Milan...), especially since they are represented on the menu exempt from VAT (then applied at the time of the bill).
Hello, The reason why I m writing this, I own a restaurant. I was looking forward to going to this restaurant walking in the restaurant is very nice tiny easy-going vibe. We were in a good mood and looking forward to dinner Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed would I go back? NO! The night started with drinks no Hendricks for gin tonic no lychee martini. Ok no big deal we ordered other stuff. The disappointment was getting there at 8 PM and getting served at 10 PM. I have zero tolerance for that, especially when your food comes cold, the steaks were hard as a rock you can mess up a steak it happens, but there was 4 steaks, we addressed it to the waiter and the funny part is when he said the reason why the steaks were hard is because we asked to have them Pittsburgh medium. Really! obviously he didn t know what he was talking about. When you order your steak, Pittsburgh medium it s supposed to be well done on the exterior and Jiusy, soft in the interior not hard as a hockey puck & and cold , if you can t serve a warm steak at the price that you re charging I have an issue with that we were in wonderful company so we still had a wonderful time but when your bill is over $1000 I expect 100%. I realize that Montreal has a big selection of restaurants there s too much competition for mistakes, and when there is a mistake, take the responsibility as a restaurant owner I know we always do. Thank you Lily
Excellent experience. Fine dining and amazing service. Perfect for a special occasion Food
Sat by the bar and had good service and the food was okay. The short rib was flavourful but the pickled veg on top was not desirable. The side of carrots was really nice. Octopus was my favourite.
Snug and cozy place in the heart of Old-Montreal. Barroco can barely squeeze in 30 people, but this place packs a punch thanks to good food and amazing drinks combo.
Luca waiter very attentive to customers Average food without too much. Very very long time before being served due to lack of staff in the kitchen 1:50 hours for the main course. Very small terrace with smell of city sewer.
The staff service is very nice. Bland meal with more than ordinary presentation. More than 1h30 to get our main dishes. Never again, too bad for the servers who try to cope with the rest which is not up to par.
Phenomenal ambiance and food, service, all
One of my favourite restaurants to end my Montreal trip and one I was recommended by somebody special. I love where this restaurant is situated and the vibe it gives. The food was absolutely amazing and delicious, we loved the mains as the Paella Borroco and the Fletán Moules. Which was the Halibut. The Halibut and the Paella. Truly a must when visiting Montreal.
Food was good but waited nearly 2 hours to be served. Atmosphere was charming and service was attentive.
It was simply beyond our expectations, exceptional. Very attentive and efficient service Simply fabulous cuisine, all the dishes are magnified Well done
Do not miss. Cocktails prepared by a smiling and affable professional. Gourmet and tasty cuisine superbly prepared and served. Dont forget about the beef Wellington. A chef who deserves an upgrade to first class!..
Amazing food!
Extremely disappointed with this restaurant. - service focused on inflating invoices and not on customer experience - overpriced food - some dishes lacked refinements and flavors
I don t know if this place champions diversity& inclusion but we were not allowed for a dinner with a toddler at 8pm. With comment children are not allowed
Came here just for drinks. They were great! My husband and I each got a couple. We came after the kitchen closed so didn t get to try any food but the dishes that were still coming out around us smelled amazing. Update: Came back again 5 months later and had dinner. Food was incredible! The service was also excellent. My husband and I shared the burrata to start which was delicious, then I had the paella and my husband had the short ribs. Paella was very yummy but the short ribs were the best we have ever had anywhere we have gone. We will definitely be returning back to Barroco on future trips!
Everything was great - delicious culinary experience - however it was very hot and sweaty in the restaurant. But it WAS 30 degrees at 9h50pm so can really blame the restaurant. But great delicious food
Small, intimate spot. Food is top notch and so is the service. I highly recommend!
We had beef tartare and paella. I ve had better beef tartare but paella was delicious, perfectly cooked scallops on top. The inside is small not good for big crowds, it s more like a romantic dinner place.
The octopus disappointed us quite a bit, it is too small, even though I stated at the time of making the reservation that it was my birthday, they never congratulated me. The music was quite loud and not in keeping with the place, they brought us beer in the can and a hot glass of jaibolero. It was not the best experience for my birthday.
We really like the environment of the restaurant, and the service is very timely, but the waiters seem to be reluctant to smile. Halibut tastes very good, I like it! Beef short ribs are rich but salty. We were a bit disappointed when the aged ham first came, but it wasn t bad.
Such a beautiful venue, beyond tasty food (the paella was incredible truly incredible!) and outstanding service. My server was knowledgeable and genuinely friendly like he was the actual owner! Excellent experience!
I dont usually leave a comment but unfortunately I think that this one might be useful to people wishing to dine at this restaurant. The cuisine is bland and the prices exorbitant given the quality of the dishes. Go on your way because you will most certainly be as disappointed as we were despite the friendliness of the servers and the warm setting of the restaurant.
Great, very well received Quality dish I highly recommend
Food tasted okay- pretty bland in my opinion. The fresh bread is good though and I would recommend ordering it from the apps menu. Overalls takeaway is that it s overpriced for what it is but the ambiance and vibe is good. One thing that really annoyed me- my wife is pregnant and we ordered the Trous Normand for dessert. I am traveling from abroad and did not know it has liquor in it. My wife had some and that is obviously not okay. When I mentioned this to the server, she acted like I should ve known there was alcohol. Instead, the menu should state that there is alcohol in it. Not cool
Food was good. Service wasnt that great, the host/ waiter was rude.
Absolutely amazing.
Everything was fine except the food. When you are expected to pay $100+ per person, the expectation is very high something similar like Le Club Chasse et Pêche experience. Unfortunately the prices do not justify what they offer.
Extraordinary service. Smiling waitress who seeks to understand her customers so that they are satisfied with their culinary experience. Noisy for everyone, staff and customers, so not really for a tête-à-tête Wheelchair accessibility: Ground floor and terrace
Not a bad dining experience.
Classical vibe. Everything Ive ordered whether the cocktails or the meals have been made with care & talent. The service is always pleasant & professional. I highly recommend Barroco to anyone whos passionate about Mediterranean vibes.
A restaurant with a warm atmosphere, the dinner was really delicious and the service perfect.
We got really lucky one day and snagged a last minute reservation on my birthday while on vacation in Montreal. My boyfriend and I still talk about the food here (it s been a year) and how we can t wait to come back when we come to Montreal again. And soon as we plan a trip back this will be the first place we make a reservation.
Always a pleasure to come here. And happy to see the place so crowded and doing well. First time there since December 2010 It s a great place for a romantic dinner The food is great Tried the home made brioche with butter, the grilled octopus and ribsteak Highly recommend the eggplant grilled
Good food and great service.
The service here is absolutely great, and the cuisine is very sophisticated. Definitely recommend trying this spot located in the old port of Montreal.
Small and intimate restaurant with great service. Overall food was good. We ordered medium rare ribeye and it came out medium well, a bit on the dry side but it was quite tasty so we just ate it. Spaghetti was delicious.
Good food, service, particularly like the degustation menu
We didn t have a reservation so we got a table outside which was rather cozy and cute . As appetizers we ordered the Burrata and the octopus which were ok . We felt that the raspberry vinaigrette didn t really work with the burrata and the octopus was a bit overcooked. However as a main course we ordered the beef short ribs and a glass of red wine both were delicious and worked very well together . For dessert we got the millefeuille which was also pretty good . Service was good and friendly .
The food was superb, and the service was impeccable.
Stopped in for aperitivo before dinner and sat at the bar. Amazing service and conversation from the bartender Marc, had the octopus and it was phenominal.
Chose Barroco for dinner on the fly while walking around downtown & couldn t have been happier we did! BEST short rib we ve had! Marc the bartender was awesome too - highly recommend!
Delicious food, great ambiance and an attentive server. Suggest to make your own cocktails off the menu as bartender is VERY capable.
Great service and great cocktails. Amazing service 10/10 recommend. Reservations recommended
Marc Antoine was the most charming bartender i ve ever been served by, and the food was phenomenal! 11/10. Marc can i get your number? Food
Accommodating and charming staff made this experience welcoming and enlightening. Sat beside solid stone walls and wide wooden ceiling beams, every cell of this place tells a story. The food was extraordinary and the bartender Marc Antoine provided welcome guidance through the cocktail experience and set the stage for the main event. A place to discover and rediscover into infinity truly.
The food at Barroco has potential, but the excessive saltiness overshadowed the true flavors of the dishes. As for the service, it left much to be desired. Despite being told multiple times that someone would assist me, I waited for 10 minutes by the entrance. Its frustrating to see staff walking past while youre waiting, especially when the table was already set and ready. With some tweaks in seasoning and improved service, Barroco could truly shine. BTW I had the appointment and wasn t walk in.
I celebrated my birthday here with my parents, decent food, atmosphere is nice and cozy, and the service was good. For appetizer, the grilled octopus and for desert millefuille is a highly recommended!
What a romantic little resto in the heart of the old port. The paella was soooo good, although years ago I remember it was served on traditional Spanish paella pans? The steak yummm! cooked and seasoned perfectly. Drinks, always strong like I like it. Im an early eater, otherwise make sure you make reservations
I had been really looking forward to checking out this place, but it turned into quite a disaster... Unfortunately, a few hours after dining with a friend, I experienced bad food poisoning (perhaps due to the seafood).. The short ribs were tender but extremely salty, and everything else was just average (or below average). For the price I paid, its safe to say it fell far short of my expectations.
Looked like it was going to be a lot better than it was. All a bit basic.
Good place but food is average. The mushrooms were good the special fish Wellington was meh.
Nice!
I recommend!
very dirty Like restaurants
The short rib was amazing
Bland and featureless cuisine for a substantial price. Very disappointed with this experience that we expected
An incredible experience with drinks and dinner at the bar, made even more incredible by Marc. He made our delicious dinner an unforgettable experience that wouldn t have been the same without him.
Amazing restaurant ,with delicious food ,great service and lovely atmosphere Thank you so much and see you soon Food
Magnificent! In Old Montreal for 4 nights. Hands down the best meal of all. Get the tasting menu. Phillip, the maitre d, was superb. Service was outstanding. Well be back!
Had the best time Best food Best service The food was spectacular The drinks were beyond delicious My birthday celebration was concluded with the most tasty mousse au chocolat! Can t wait to go back
