162 Rue Prince-Arthur E, Montréal, QC H2X 1B7, Canada
Traditional French fare served in a laid-back BYOB eatery with a terrace on a pedestrian street.
Took three hours for a three service course, didn’t even get to eat dessert as it was closing time. Waitress “forgot” to bring them out. Bathroom was closed and there was no solution offered. When we finally got the check, 30mins after asking, she charged us for the desserts even though we did not receive them. Food was good but service, wait time and facilities were not.
Edit: I just checked again and my waitress deleted her 5-star review… these are really shady business practices. Save your 80$ and go elsewhere. Please stay away from this place. I had such a bad experience and had to wait for my food for 2 hours, and the staff seemed very stressed and poorly directed by the manager. I’ve never had such a horrible experience at a restaurant in my life. I also noticed that one of the only 5-star reviews here is from my waitress?? I’m sorry but please do better.
One of the cook went for a smoke by the door, without closing it. We could see him from our seats and the restaurant smelled like smoke. Our third dish came before our second and our fourth (dessert) never came. They offered a discount for the missing dessert. We never received glasses for water. The food wasn’t great : portions were small, the medium rare steak was rare and the salads here and there consisted of spring mix with a little salad dressing. We are never going back again.
Without doubt the worst dining experience I've had in 2024. I made reservations for 8:30pm. We arrived to an empty restaurant. Some staff were sitting at the side and nobody addressed us for several minutes. After some time, the server finally came out and sat us. As soon as we were sat, she told us that the kitchen is closing soon so it would have to be a final order in a manner that made it seem like we were coming in last minute. We made a reservation for 1.5 hours before close, in fact there was another slot for 9:00pm even so this made no sense. It was clear that we were not welcome by the staff. This was very apparent in their demeanour. The cook would intermittently come out and scowl at me for no reason like I was punishing him by being there. Absolutely horrible, unwelcoming service throughout our time there. The food was no redemption at all. French onion soup was watery and not flavourful as others I've had. The chicken dish was so disappointing, I could have made better at some. I complained about the service to our server and she tried using the excuse that they had a problem in the kitchen and it was causing them some issues but I responded to her that this was no excuse for the horrible service we were receiving. They should not be deflecting their stress and unhappiness on paying customers.
My partner and I made a reservation on a Saturday at 8 pm. When we arrived the server tried to push us away by saying they weren’t taking any more customers. We informed her we had a reservation for 2, which she questioned as she didn’t believe us. After showing her the reservation confirmation, she told us to sit somewhere, looking unpleased. Her tone and body language made it clear we were not welcome, and she seemed annoyed that they now had to serve us. We then waited almost 15 minutes without seeing the server again. No menus, no water, no acknowledgement that we were sitting there. I completely understand that mixed-up reservations can happen, that’s fine. But I would hope the service and treatment of customers would be professional regardless. I rarely write bad reviews, but this felt very disappointing. My partner and I were feeling bad as it seemed we were bothering them with our presence. We ended up leaving and booking at La Prunelle because we didn’t want to feel like a bother our entire night. The other restaurant thankfully still had space and we proceeded to have a lovely dinner there. We were looking forward to trying Le Square, but I don’t believe we’ll try to come again.
Service is slow. The dish I ordered was supposed to be vegetarian, but when I got it, it contained meat. My wife's dish contained primarily fat instead of meat.
Overall, it was good. First the positives: (1) the dark chocolate lava cake and the crème brûlée were fantastic. I would go back for the deserts alone. (2) My tartare and my friends steak were delicious. The french onion soup is also really good. (3) the vibe was pretty good and got busier as we were there. (4) BYOB Negatives: (1) the gazpacho was the worst gazpacho i’ve ever had. (2) my other friends steak was not cooked properly but still tasted good. (3) a little expensive for what you get.
I was wary to try French cuisine again, but boy did this place helped change my mind. Customer service was excellent and they were able to take us in even though they were fully booked via reservations. Their appetizers were tasty, but portion sizes were small. The mushroom risotto entree and duck entree was absolutely amazing. This restaurant encourages BYOB and a short walk away you can purchase some bottles of wine.
We have returned since the sale and unfortunately I have to change my opinion. We were very disappointed to see that the restaurant has lost a lot of feathers since the change of ownership. The atmosphere changed, the lights were no longer dimmed, it was dirty and less beautiful, the welcome and the service provided by someone who obviously uses substances. We had booked through the booking platform, but they didnt seem to know about it. The speaker is stoned, the music is certainly beautiful but it was very unpleasant. The food is no longer up to what it used to be. Less fresh, smaller quantities, really less good. Very difficult to digest. In short, we are sad, it was a place that we loved to visit and recommend. The carpaccio meal served with hot goat cheese! WoW! The snail casserole is breathtaking all the way to the end of the alley! The musical choice is excellent. There were 3 of us enjoying this good meal in a beautiful atmosphere:)
Frankly uninteresting The dishes are neither bad nor good, not seasoned and served cold... The dishes are far too cooked and the quantities far too small. 3h30 for the meal, the wait is catastrophic... The waitress is not pleasant and never came to see if anything was needed, not even for water, I had to go get jugs myself! All this for way too much money... To flee!
I came to Montreal two weeks ago at the Table, and the experience was frankly disappointing. The wait for food was endless everyone seemed to wait for hours. I didnt even have water at the table for a while, and the service was completely disorganized. While reading recent reviews, I noticed a review mentioning that a waitress had left a 5-star review, and that review was later deleted. Intrigued, I did a little research, and it didnt take more than two minutes to see that there were two other 5-star reviews posted at the same time as that of the so-called waitress, including one from a certain Gary Youance. Honestly, I dont understand how anyone could have given this service such a rating. With a little digging, I discovered that this Gary Youance appears not only to be an employee, but probably one of the owners, since he is also responsible for posting online ads to recruit staff. So, the person who would have supposedly wanted to brought the inappropriate commentary in response to criticism above seems to be the same person who writes these false opinions to inflate the restaurants note. This gives the impression of a complete lack of transparency and honesty. I wouldnt be surprised if the other 5 star review was from another employee or friend, considering they already lied about it. Its been twice that theyve been caught red-handed, and honestly, I dont think anyone could give this restaurant a 5 star, especially considering all the other negative comments there have been in the last month. This kind of practice only fuels the impression that this restaurant completely lacks honesty. In short, not only does the quality of the service and dishes leave something to be desired, but the restaurants practices in terms of review management are more than questionable. I dont recommend it at all.
The flank steak tasted burnt, the fries were ordinary... no toiletries... the waitress informed us that the table dhôte is obligatory for our group of 5 (even though it is written for 9 people and more in the menu)
We came as part of MTL À TABLE for their brunch menu on Sunday the 17th. They call us beforehand to let us know that there is a problem with their INTERAC machine and they take either cash or transfer, no problem, it s nice to let us know beforehand So were going there pretty happy. We had already tried the restaurant one evening before and we were very happy so we thought it was an opportunity to try their brunch. We arrive at 11 a.m. (the opening), we are seated (we were the 2nd customers). Barely seated, we are given the first course (3 pastries) and told that the menu is on the mtl site at the table We look and choose. We start to eat the pastries and there, it takes almost 45 minutes before we come to take our order And don t make the excuse of lack of staff There were 2 waitresses for 7 tables in total, its more than enough, just 1 person would be enough I find it really amazing knowing that there were few people in the restaurant. And that 2 tables had to leave, because they also waited a long time. Okay the service can be long when there are people, or a kitchen problem, I dont know But the minimum is to warn the customer or make a commercial gesture. When placing the order, my partner asks for a hot chocolate (on the MTL menu at the table it is noted that we are allowed a hot drink.) They tell him it s impossible, they never do it. So you never do it, but mark it on your brunch menu on your WEBSITE He is not offered any other alternative and still no commercial gesture. In short, a lot of errors in this service. I admit that we were extremely disappointed with this establishment. The only positive point, we really enjoyed our plates and the price is correct and it respects the basic idea of mtl at the table.
Honestly, the worst restaurant on Prince Arthur Street and one of the worst BYOB in Montreal. Outdated and poorly executed food (they cant even make gravlax). The menu and the quality of the dishes served are a real joke for the price asked. Never go eat there, chefs advice. The new administration clearly has no idea how to properly run a restaurant. Save yourself some time and eat elsewhere.
Very poor service more than 3 hours for the first course very ordinary food
Extremely long service. Bland food. Decoration to be redone
More than 2 hours of waiting, place to avoid!
I dont usually leave negative comments but Im so disappointed! As part of mtl à table we were happy to come and have brunch especially for the tower of Viennoiseries... which we did not have. Supplier problem, OK. But the savory dishes were just good. The potatoes fried so hard that they stayed on my stomach all day. The fruit cut was really minimal in quantity. The setting is quite sad, it s a shame. And the only compensation we received was a $5 discount on the total bill! $5 for 2 rounds of missing Pastries! Too frustrated sorry
Catastrophic from A to Z. My plate must have contained Provençal potatoes, an English muffin and a fruit bowl which were replaced by frozen, uncooked and unsalted fries, a toasted baguette and three fruits... its is without counting the 2 hours of waiting. My friends were not served at the same time (or not served at all). The manager did not apologize and made a commercial gesture that we had to ask for, otherwise she would never have done it! Very disappointed, in a restaurant which in the past was excellent!
Worst brunch in Montreal. 2 hours of waiting for plates that were not what we had ordered, with ingredients replaced without telling us and therefore without worrying about possible allergies. Just defrosted food. More than 30 minutes between plates served on the same table so we werent even able to eat together. Not enough stock left to serve one of the people at the table, so she couldnt even eat at all. Manager who places the blame on her servers who were nevertheless doing their best. Absolutely avoid.
My worst experience in 4 years in Montreal. We went there to enjoy the Montréal à table event for brunch. The meal served to us did not correspond to the menu indicated: the salmon was not salmon gravlax, the fruit bowl was only made up of three fruits. The quantity of potatoes was ridiculous. My partner got bread and not English muffins, no Benedictine sauce and frozen fries instead of potatoes. No changes had been warned (quite dangerous for allergies). Lets talk about the service, the waiter was really nice and did his job well. However, the present owner places all the service faults on him. We explained to her all the disappointments we had, she did not apologize, we had to ask for a commercial gesture ourselves. The service was long (arrived at 12 p.m., served at 2 p.m.) but we had been warned at the beginning so it was not a problem. We had already been to this restaurant when there were the previous owners, unfortunately now we will not come back!
We went there on Saturday for the Montréal à table event (group of 5), reservation made online! We waited 15 minutes at the entrance without being approached and welcomed. We even had to call the waiter to tell him that we had a reservation and he replied: I thought you were leaving . Finally we are seated, but our table is not ready (or even mediocre): 2 glasses of wine, 3 glasses of water and 3 sets of utensils. 30 minutes weve been sitting, no one comes to see us... No follow-up, no customer service, disinterested and inconsiderate attitude of the staff. After an hour and a half of waiting, they came to tell us that they had almost nothing left to serve us to eat That the dishes were limited 30 minutes later they told us that they could only serve us 2 platters of charcuterie and cheese . Fortunately the waitress is nice but the service and quality of the restaurant is terrible. I often went to this restaurant and the service was NICKEL! But I learned that since June 2024 the two men are no longer the owners of this restaurant... that explains the mediocre service! I honestly DO NOT recommend it in any way. The quality of service leaves something to be desired and is no longer like before!
Extremely disappointed we were a large table and we had been warned of a lack of staff but we still waited 1h30 before the order was taken On top of that, the plates didnt match the order at all... And to top it all off, one person couldnt eat because there wasnt enough food even though we had reserved... I wont come back again...
My partner and I booked for Montreal at Table, the online reviews were pretty good, so we had a certain expectation... But then, our experience got worse and worse. To begin with, it took an hour before we were served. With each minute of waiting, the discomfort grew. The layout of the tables made any movement uncomfortable: the waitresses and other customers were constantly jostling us, as the space was so limited. The restaurant is BYOB, but we had to wait over half an hour for glasses to be brought to us! Every time we asked for something, like water, we had to insist with no guarantee of being heard. Once the water bottle was finished, it was never replaced, even after reporting it. As far as the food goes, it was the ultimate disappointment. The foie gras had a gelatinous texture which suggested questionable quality. The flank steak, accompanied by a three pepper sauce , had an aftertaste of soap, a real waste! As for the toast, it was obviously several days old. In short, non-existent service and sloppy cooking. We had hoped for a pleasant evening and left feeling like we had wasted our time and money.
Arriving at the restaurant, there is a strange atmosphere, everyone looks at each other with incomprehension. We are told to take any table. Once seated, I hit my leg against an empty wine bottle, which leads me to believe that the room has not been cleaned. Looking at the tables, no one has any food except a basket. No one came to ask us if we wanted coffee or anything. The first course is put on the table without saying anything. First round of pastries . I leave you the work in photos. The restaurant emptied within minutes. We left. For Le Square, you have a mistake in your prefabricated response to the reviews. Perhaps going to the trouble of doing anything other than copy-pasting would prove that you dont have a complete disinterest in customer satisfaction.
Worst experience Do we call that a tower of pastries?!? Burnt croissants?! No plate with this beautiful tower we left like all the other customers
We arrived at the restaurant and were told to choose our table (the table was half set, things were missing... a bottle of water but no glasses). We went for the MTL at the table. We waited 25 minutes for the waitress to come see us because I had to call her. She brought us nothing, no menu, no glass of water. When we asked for the MTL brunch menu at the table, she didnt have the first course due to a production problem, nor two of the three dishes available. The restaurant looks like an apartment suitable for a restaurant, the waitress walked slowly and didnt look like she wanted to be there. In addition to the unavailability of the menu. We left after wasting our time and without having eaten anything.
The restaurant changed our reservation only 7 hours in advance. When we arrived, the door was locked, and it remained locked until there was a knock on the door, 20 minutes after our reservation. 10 minutes later no one had taken our order. Our table neighbors received dry bread and a burnt chocolatine. They asked for an unburnt chocolatine and the waitress refused. We left.
I made a reservation for 8 people at this restaurant for Sunday November 10 through Open Table. They acknowledged my reservation and sent me a reminder the day before. Reservation was for 6PM but around 5PM (while I was driving) Open table sent me a message that my reservation has been canceled by the restaurant . Imagine the situation, I went however to the restaurant, that was indeed closed (locked) to wait for my friends. What a shame... Thank God there was a Casa Greque near by and we all went there.
Terrible service, 5 server but took them 30minutes to get us water, we had to open our bottle of wine ourselves. after an hour and a half they took our order but half the thing were missing, the server seem confused and didn t even know any of the dish. Every customer seem so confused about the service. We finally left bevause they couldn t get us any food. do not waste your time and go there!
Very bad experience as part of Montreal à Table. We had a reservation for 8 people for a milestone birthday. Firstly, the table was not clean, with poorly washed wine glasses and abundant fruit flies in the restaurant which made us doubt the safety of the place. The service was non-existent, no one offered to open our bottles of wine which we opened ourselves. After 30 minutes we finally received water and after an hour and a half of waiting, when taking our orders, the waitress informed us that no main course was available on the menu. Only a very limited choice of starters was available and a few desserts. The staff seemed very confused and not at all proactive. We left the restaurant without eating, as no dishes except a few starters were available.
Unfortunately I had reserved for 14 people on November 12, for my sisters 50th birthday, and I was never informed that the table dhôte on the menu would not be the one presented on the website and the price increased by $12 more for a menu equal to that offered on the site...the extra duck was not even available. The service was also very long, no one came to see us, it took almost an hour, I had to advise that we were ready to be served. The food was luckily good but the experience very disappointing especially when you invite 14 people and you have to tell them all these inconveniences..... all this didnt really seem to be taken seriously by the restaurant.
Best good best place ever
Wow, what a pleasant restaurant, personalized service from the waitress who took the time to chat with us. The food was quick and very good.
Really disappointed...to be avoided completely. There are too many good restaurants in Montreal to be disappointed with service after service in the square. Come home to everything.
Food - nothing special Service - almost non existent (waiting forever for everything) Atmosphere - sitting right next to baseboard heating made it very uncomfortable. Tables too close to each other making it impossible to get up. It was like + 27 on a warm November night. Not posible to pay by card - machine broke down. Either cash or e-transfer to a random email address .never again!
We went as part of MTL à table and it was disappointing. We always had to ask the staff for service. We had three pastries for 4 people. Endless waiting time to finally have disappointing plates. I never received my bread despite having asked for it 3 times, we had to get up to ask for ketchup. My friend barely had any hollandaise sauce on his benedictines, not to mention that there was always stickiness on the fruit on his plate. My partners brioche bread was supposed to be raspberry and strawberry but there was only raspberry. My friend received the wrong order, no apology from the staff - she had to wait 15-20 minutes more before getting the right dish... which contained old cane peaches. All this while we were being circled by tons of fruit flies... there were them everywhere in the restaurant, even in the toilets. When going to pay, we are informed that it is cash only or interact transfer??? All this while the cook drinks whiteclaw while making the eggs In the end we laughed about it but don t go there!
Very nice and good food with good portions
Pleasant atmosphere, very good service and boof!
Good service and nice atmosphere, my waitress was warm and friendly. The food is very good and the service is fast. I recommend and will probably return.
I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere, food and service were impeccable. Thank you the square
The restaurant offers an unforgettable culinary experience with authentic and tasty dishes. The warm atmosphere and attentive service add to the magic of the place. Every bite is a delight, and the desserts are to die for. A true ode to French gastronomy, not to be missed for lovers of good cuisine.
A1 service, nothing to say. Delicious food. Warm atmosphere.
A little disappointed with our experience as part of Mtl à Table. The service was excessively slow. There was no duck or chocolate mousse left at 7:30 p.m. We were told there was only one bib left and then we were told there were several left!?!? We will unfortunately not return to this restaurant.
Beautiful place, excellent food
Nice terrace, good service. The cuisine has changed somewhat.
Very disappointed. The dishes were bland and expensive for the quality offered. Lackluster service, one dish not served. For bread butter, it should rather read bread margarine
I had excellent memories of the Square, where my partner and I had an excellent evening a year ago. Sadly, the place is a shadow of what it once was. We chose the starter + main course formula for the evening. The starter for me - ancestral tomatoes like Di Buffala mozarella - was really not up to par, the tomatoes were really ordinary - certainly not ancestral - and the mozarella completely basic, worthy of Saputo - not to mention the fact that the portion was tiny. The rest was fine - dry, bloody chicken, defrosted and lackluster salmon, and anemic sides. We were charged $2 for the basket of bread. The waitress, although friendly, was not up to the task (taking utensils out of your pocket still looks a bit cheap...) In short, for $100, I was frankly disappointed. The new owner of the place doesnt seem to know how to properly run his restaurant, and thats a shame. To avoid.
Honestly, Im taking the time to write a review because we were hesitant to try this restaurant. We had excellent service and exceptional food. You could feel the freshness and quality. The waitress took care of us like we were family. It s sure that now it will become our little restaurant, bring your favorite wine on the tray.
Tiny portions and very bad food! For a meal for three, here is the recap: - half a sausage (probably from the nearby grocery store) - undercooked fries - burnt chicken with cheese on it (why?) - Salmon gravelax (3 pieces of frozen salmon) In short, $72 per person to meet the squares mascot and die of hunger on the way out! A shame when we know that it was a good place a year ago.. Moral: read the comments
The atmosphere is very friendly and authentic Our waitress was welcoming, despite the fact that she told us rather sharply tonight we dont have crème brulée, so its chocolate mousse... or nothing! Table dhôte menu to taste starter + main course + dessert. I take the beef carpaccio, nothing to complain about, classic. I just tell myself that I was lucky when I look at the entry of my guests who were treated to three poor snails fighting a duel in a casserole dish and three pieces of raw salmon advertised as gravlax . Frankly, at $12 for a la carte starters, its borderline. The dishes arrive! I ordered a piece of chicken breast with fries, arrived pieces of thighs (sorry?) covered in cheese (sorry??) with industrial fries (sorry???). For a $32 à la carte dish, its impossible not to think that were being taken for pigs. Speaking of pork, my guests werent comfortable when we brought them a sausage and a half (honestly, artisanal sausage, my eye). And we end with a semi-cooked chocolate, announced with vanilla ice cream, and which arrives without, as you can imagine! We will end with a positive point despite everything, pets are accepted in this restaurant, in any case the mouse who accompanied us during dessert did the end-of-service entertainment... Im not used to writing incriminating comments like this, but the final price of $72 (including tax + tips) doesnt make it easier (especially when youre presented with the TPE with a minimum tip of 18% *cough cough*).
Its sad... We loved this restaurant a few years ago, but with young children, we havent been back for a while. As soon as we entered the restaurant, we immediately felt that it was no longer like before. Not as lively, not as clean, not as warm and far fewer customers than before. Their onion soup was very good, but otherwise it was all that was left of the old experience. Dishes without wow, without magic and bland. Once the meal was over, we said to ourselves that this was the last time we would return to this restaurant. And to make matters worse, while we were finishing our bottle of wine... we saw a mouse walking around the restaurant... Which we told our waitress. The manager came to speak to us to tell us that the owners were going to contact us about this inconvenience... never heard back. That adds one more reason to never go back there again.
Cold but efficient service, the food on the other hand is disappointing, from starter to dessert, nothing was really good. I tasted much better frozen snails, the parmesan in the beef carpaccio had no taste, the spaghettini was bathed in oil, the salmon steak was overcooked and the vegetables were too greasy when the dessert was half-cooked. was overcooked with a severe lack of chocolate taste and for the crème brûlée the container was only half full and the taste was not there either. Its a plus that its a BYOB unfortunately too expensive given the quality of the food.
A gem On Prince Arthur the food and the exceptional service plus the owner is friendly I recommended to everyone
Nice little atmosphere on the terrace. Service #1 We were served raw chicken and the dishes were ordinary.
Cute place with nice staff but the food was very mediocre and overpriced. Was hoping for better
As I live in the neighborhood, I like coming to this restaurant. This morning, I wanted to enjoy brunch... Arrived at 10:30 a.m., no one at reception except the floor scrubber with his mope... A lady comes out of the kitchen to tell us that the waitress is in the toilet and to seat us... A few minutes later the same lady comes to tell us that she cannot find the waitress. So we went to St-Laurent and found a nice bistro with a welcome desk and a waitress.
I loved the food, the service is perfect!!!
The atmosphere was good, with lots of good old French music. The decoration seemed to be half done in the French audsi style. The service was not great despite the kindness of the waitress. She never brought us water. She also never brought filter coffee to me and my boyfriend and even forgot to bring my potatoes too. The food was good but not the price which was there because our two dishes were missing things which appeared on the menu but in the end disappeared from the plate received. In short, we tried but wouldnt go back.
Absolutely delicious brunch We really stopped there by chance and we dont regret it! Tasty, delicious and well presented Big highlight on the fresh fruits which were ripe and tasty!
Hello We went to celebrate a birthday and I admit that I am completely disappointed... the dining room needs renovations and the menu is limited and expensive for $300 for 4 people, tax and tip included??? we expect more I am sure that the chef is capable of much better. several people talk about the portions being too small and I confirm..
The portions are small and there were a lot of knots in the small piece of flank steak. The gravlax starter was delicious, but the menu was quite expensive.
I live nearby and for six years this was my stalwart for impromptu meals & bigger occasions. The food was fantastic, the vibe supreme. But now it seems to be under new management, or a new chef, and while the menu is largely unchanged, the food on the plate is wildly inferior - especially my beloved carpaccio de boeuf. This used to be served with melted chèvre on toast atop a green salad with a perfectly executed vinaigrette. Now it looks like Boursin smeared on untoasted bread with a drizzle of olive oil and blobs of mustard. Just ick. It s a shame. This place was so great for so long .
Ive been coming here for a while and have never been disappointed with the service or the food!! I highly recommend this restaurant! Plus I had the chance to taste their new brunches, my parents and I loved it. Nothing to say about this restaurant. Simply fantastic!!
I came with my family. The food was absolutely wonderful. We had the 3 cours menu. Food was fresh fool of diffrent flavors. The service was on point. We lovs this little French restaurants.
excellent service, a real delight, I highly recommend this place for all occasions. Thank you very much for this wonderful evening.
Chop too much fat not enough meat. The menu includes a main plate and dessert package which totals $65, which is too expensive. Finally, a nice evening despite everything.
We attended Le Square and were served by the delightful waitress Omany. She pulled all the stops to ensure we had a pleasant dinner, knew the menu, and that the food I ordered all satisfied my dietary restrictions. We ordered the lamb chops, salmon and chicken breast dishes and they were cooked really well, accompanied by the ratatouille. So tasty! We had crème brûlée for dessert which was perfection! Highly recommended for a satisfying meal out! Dietary restrictions: I am gluten free in addition to a number of other allergies.
Came here on a weekend for brunch. They seemed to be understaffed. We waited by the front and no one came to greet us for a while so we awkwardly stood there. We sat outside, there isn t much seating indoors. It took 40 mins from when we sat down to finally receive all our dishes. I ordered the crepe suzette, but I believe our waitress misunderstood and put in an order for a side of crepe, because we only received one crepe on the plate. She accidentally gave one of us the wrong dish, and it took a while to flag her down to let her know. The food itself was good, but the lack of service really soured our whole mood. Shout out to the DJ tho, he was cool.
Really nice brunch and cappuccino on sidewalk in the shade. Lovely people who run the place.
Thank you, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was cozy. I will go back to try other dishes.
I always eat there for dinner, I went for the brunch and I hand an amazing time. The food eas great the service perfect. I have my dinner bring my little beer, and now I have my brunch bringing my bubbles. Love it
One of the best Bring your own wine restaurant but I discovered their brunch just WAW the quality of the food service just WAW. Plus I brought my bubbles!!! Awesome
Although the waitress doesnt speak English, she tried her best and the cook came out for help. They were so nice. The food was also awesome
Very well served by Juliana. Beautiful French restaurant with tasty dishes. The atmosphere is warm. Vegetarian options: Few options
Have you ever gotten escargot to go and then sat on the ground outside and eaten it? If not im sorry
AVV restaurant in a former apartment converted into a business which gives a friendly and noisy atmosphere. Good starters - fragrant garlic snails and hearty onion soup, but the main courses leave something to be desired (steak fries - lack of salt, duck breast with ratatouille - cold). The service was a little too familiar and fast. I understand that on a Saturday evening we want the tables to turn, but it is still possible to wait until the bottle of wine is finished before bringing the bill with the machine to pay... we will not go back there !
a big thank you to the chef who prepared a chicken breast for one of our guests (this person only eats poultry) and thank you to this waitress who was so kind and attentive long life in the square
The owner was super welcoming and gave great recommendations for food. The food was absolutely delicious! I had an issue with the dessert and the owner came right away and switched it, no questions asked. The music was slightly all over the place but overall lovely experience.
Had a fantastic time last night, owner was really nice and friendly, food was excellent and service was great Vegetarian options: Good options for anyone
One of the worst service I have had in a restaurant! It s a BYOB but the waitress doesn t want to open the bottles! We asked her three times to do it. Order error: out of a group of 10, 5 people had their dishes late! Some had time to finish their dishes before others had theirs then to finish it all the waitress made mistakes in the bills! This restaurant is worthless, the food is not that good either! Dont go there, its really bad in all spheres
Went on Sunday evening when it was listed as open. It was closed. Waste of time.
best french cuisine i ve had in a while. staff was excellent and food was great!
Exceptional atmosphere Great quality food Professional, attentive and very attentive staff Thank you for your excellent service Vegetarian options: Several choices
Wow! I came there to do magic at a company party. The restaurant (the boss I think) insisted that I eat this stuff despite my tight schedule. A salmon tartare at the beginning and towards the end he gave me a plate that I could take quickly. It was truly WOW! Long live the Square!
Some items were great, others overcooked.
French bistro type restaurant. Well maintained. Helpful people. Service ok. Simple menu for all tastes. Prices are reasonable. The presentation of the dishes is good. Food well prepared. During our visit the restaurant was not very busy.
Very good service for groups
Really mixed feeling. The beef steak is really good but served with poor quality fries. The foie gras is good but in very small quantities and with even less bread and finally the service is not great....
Very good casual style service Courteous and friendly without pretension. The prices are more than reasonable, we took 2 3-course tables d hôte for $135 before tip. Adequate portions. During my last visit I was very impressed by the Octopus - very tender! Well done - it wasnt on the menu this time - it changes every week, which is normal) This time on the menu: Onion soup and snail to match. Excellent beef strips... but frozen fries are a real shame not to take the trouble to make them at home, they would make a big difference for customers - believe me! The salad was very good but I would have added a little more vinaigrette. Homemade pepper sauce and Dijon sauce also good. Desserts: crème brûlée at the base: very good but a little too strong in Amaretto and half cooked with chocolate and ice cream (I think homemade not sour) very good too. We preferred the semi-cooked. We will return soon despite the distance from the house. Pleasant area for a walk to digest the meal. It s a shame so many businesses are closed but still a warm atmosphere.
Very good very nice I recommend
Very good meal and good atmosphere
Excellent meal, quality products, gourmet choices, attentive and efficient service - its been three times that I have had an excellent experience, dont hesitate!!
Service was amazing but food wasnt amazing for the price, very disappointed
Decent food, but more. I had the onion soup and the beef carpaccio. The soup lacked a bit of depth, but the carpaccio was quite good. There was a lack of salt in almost everything. The service, for example, was impeccable, nothing to complain about, a very nice atmosphere too, overall a great experience.
Good restaurant in general. Price representative of what it offers. Nice menu, good portion, good service. Nothing exceptional, but good. The tuna tartare being a good choice, also the salmon gravlax.
Excellent prime rib! A little effort on the Side instead of fries would be appreciated though...nice service! Need horseradish
We simply loved it! Thanks to the team! And especially to chef Guillaume for our delicious meal!! See you soon
We feel like home :) the boss and the whole team are really adorable. It s our Friday meeting! Very pleasant
A very nice evening, quality cuisine and a top team. Address to discover absolutely!
Friendly service in English
Very nice to walk, enjoy a light meal and a good beer
An excellent French restaurant where we can bring our good wines. We loved the snails and carpaccio served as starters, the tuna tartare with fries and the chicken parmesan as main courses. Outdoor terrace ideal for warm summer evenings.
The server was friendly. The food was good nothing more. The dishes were slightly flavorful. I chose Beef Tab, but they didnt have any. Replaced with a strip loin. The dish was accompanied with 3 bites of salad and a small handful of fries. Onion soup au gratin, nothing more
I should have read the reviews that advise avoiding this place. The dishes are not up to par with French cuisine, they are not tasty dishes.
I have been going there regularly for several years and the food and service is always impeccable. The owners are super friendly and affable people who like to share their passion with their customers. The menu regularly introduces new items, so I always have a new seasonal dish to try. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys more classic French cuisine + some refreshing culinary explorations in a very pleasant location (the terrace is particularly nice on Prince Arthur) and with warm hosts.
A weekly or almost weekly regular at this restaurant for over 2 years, I have never been disappointed nor have my friends. This restaurant has everything you need, value for money, always friendly and efficient service, the choice of dishes is consistent as much as the quantities and their flavors. Its nice to eat well without going out with a $150 ticket to Montreal! Small terrace in the calm of a fountain, a real French atmosphere! Back the following Tuesday haha Vegetarian options: Yes option for certain dish Dietary restrictions: Fits + modify/add option Kid-friendliness: Adapted to all customers Wheelchair accessibility: Chair accessible, large space
I want to say that this restaurant was absolutely impeccable, from the friendliness of the servers to the delicious food that was served. Everything in a justified price range, and the athmosphere was welcoming and warm. The bathrooms are in pristine conditions, i have rarely seen that in my life. Youve won my heart, I will be back.
Cozy and intimate atmosphere and attentive service. Bonus point for being an BYOB Restaurant! Food could be warmer.
Here for MTL at the table phew the cuisine is ordinary. The snails out of the can , the strip fillet wow how to make beef interesting, and the crème brûlée that doesnt crack - soft soft soft. It s like a tourist trap restaurant in the old port. Too bad because we are looking for an excuse to come to this friendly neighborhood. The service is very friendly but there is great energy!
We tried this restaurant as part of Montréal à table. 4 people very disappointed with the taste of the food except the foie gras starter and the Paris breast dessert. The snail starter uhhh 12 snails and a little garlic butter...I made the best of it, the plate of thin strip fillet looked like a minute steak, plus all the main courses were cold!. $180 bill without alcohol and you go out and everyone is still hungry. Never again!
Very good service! The dishes were delicious! A very good address in Montreal, I recommend
Excellent meal but above all, the waiter is extremely friendly, like nothing we have ever seen!!
The food is delicious, the ingredients are fresh. The service is super friendly and we even had the chance to meet the new owner, Sephora, who recommended the salmon gravlax and the beef carpaccio (both delicious). I definitely recommend and will be back very soon!
Really know a good place to enjoy the outdoors and come see me to discuss whats happening in Montreal and to be able to contribute to people in the community who want to make and share ideas with people who are involved in the surrounding area. ..
Simple French BYOW restaurant, the food was good but a bit overpriced especially for the portions served. The service was good and the atmosphere cozy.
Nice place, honest price, good atmosphere. Beef carpaccio as a dish.
Exceptional snails and carpacio (as a main course). Guillaume the cook is an artist! And Paul the waiter does great service
Typically French dishes very well executed. This evening I had the foie gras, octopus and snails...killer!
The service was very good, food was nice and the owner is very cute lol
Friendly staff but high price for average meal quality
A really nice restaurant. An exquisite menu. Try the beef tab or beef carpaccio. And what about the onion soup!
Friendly place, very good dishes and starters. Fred the owner is great! Place to discover.
Thank you all for this wonderful evening
The food was good and the service great, plus its BYOB! I recommend!
Efficient and courteous service, very even menu, we were a group of 9 and everything was good. A little noisy (other groups)... but a very nice meal THANK YOU to the restaurant team
The taste of the products is disappointing compared to the price. The price is worth it if the food has taste, yet a nice menu and beautiful service and beautiful presentation of the dishes
Very good, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff.
Very disappointed with this French restaurant. Value for money not up to par. We expected better service too. We were never asked if everything was okay... Last night we served duck breast on what looked like ratatouille on a cold plate. So lukewarm meat and lacked presentation. Hash browns would have been a great garnish. Same thing for salmon covered in tasteless panko and on a cold plate presented on asparagus and nothing else. A little citrus style sauce would have completed the dish. When you go to a French restaurant of this price you expect more refinement. Sorry but we do not recommend and would not return.
As a French tourist, I was delighted to find my place in the heart of Montreal. The terrace and the servers are more than pleasant! The food is superb, with quality food! I highly recommend.
The service was very friendly. However, the duck confit salad at $29 is an aberration. 3 cherry tomatoes cut in half, pieces of julienned carrots, a base of salad, and max 4-5 small pieces of duck confit! I remember it for $29. I expressed my distress to the waiter who seemed empathetic. On the other hand, no satisfactory solution resulted, apart from being offered a damn free dessert! Casa Grec serious style!? Honestly!! I would be embarrassed to steal from people like that. Period.
Great food, service and ambiance. Especially liked the mushroom risotto and the filet of sole. And its byob! Would love to come back. Kid-friendliness: Although there was not a kids menu, my daughter was welcome here and enjoyed the experience.
A very nice discovery that my partner and I had the chance to make yesterday. We were treated to outstanding service and delicious food. We ate the duck breast with ratatouille and the very generous ham salad. An explosion of flavor! Without forgetting the goat starter which we savored. One of the best goat cheeses Ive tasted in the city and Im a cheese lover. We will definitely come back!
Easy and lovely. No need to say more.
Great atmosphere and great service but over cooked my steak...like never before.
Very good food. It feels like youre on a terrace in Paris, with the calm of the Mont Royal plateau. I ate frog legs which were 10/10. Plus its a bring your own wine. I recommend to everyone
Excellent! Professional servers. THANKS!
Ordered the French onion soup, grilled octopus and crab avocado for starters, salmon tartar and duck for entrees, and lava cakes and crème brûlée for desserts. Flavors were spot on, however as what others have mentioned here, portions were quite small. Also, one of the lava cakes was not a cake but a melted mound of chocolate. Worthy of a second try, though we re going to try other places during our stay in Montreal.
Before 2019 we ate here a couple of time, last night was not as good... they might have changed owner Parking: Was a Sunday night but there are pleinty of parking on street near by... rather odd Wheelchair accessibility: They put table in the middle of the street so no problem
Very slow service but they are very nice. Food was okay. I would say the only thing going here is the vibe
A treasure to discover
Exquisite. Next to a fountain that provides the restful sound of water. Outdoor tables are located in an enchanting corridor, a pedestrian zone. An incredible menu. Fantastic wait staff. Pure culinary joy! Photo: Escargot in garlic butter and a crab / avocado appetizer. Delicious.
whats not to like? good food. reasonable prices. pleasant staff.
Food! Very good
Really honestly. $25 for a salmon and 4 asparagus. The fish was also overcooked.
This was quite a surprising discovery. The very thick salmon portion was cooked perfectly. One of the best meal at a French restaurant in while. 9/10 overall. Not to mention, even if it sounds superficial, the extremely gorgeous to the eye hostess/waitress.
The food was great, try the onion soup, delish.
Beautiful and warm welcome!
Overpriced and Mediocre Food, Good Service A am not a fan of writing poor reviews, but I am just glad that we started with the soups and did not order a full meal, so were able to escape . I guess the tip off should have been that it was 7 pm and the place was virtually empty while restaurants around it were packed. Generally, in Montreal, one can get a very good French Onion Soup without trying, but here it was really watery, with too much bread and below average taste. The Gazpacho was a disappointment as well, too much tomato and a small cup size on a huge, fancy plate for 10 CAD Definitely not a gem . We left and had sandwiches across the street.
Relaxing atmosphere. Excellent food. I like that menu does not overwhelm you with multiple choices. Pleasant and not clingy service.
First visit and will return. Excellent option for bring your own wine!
Simple and effective, the risotto could be improved, particularly in cooking the rice.
First time in this restaurant, I went there for the Montréal à table 2022 experience, I was disappointed with the main meal, the Icelandic cod, very small portion, overcooked, tasteless, very bland. On the other hand, the gravlax starter was delicious, it s also difficult to miss this type of dish!! The food wont impress you, but the price might!
Honestly.. everything here was absolutely perfect. From the moment the appetizers came out I said if the whole dinner is like this I will be over the moon. The carpaccio the fois gras the bavette sauce poivre. Out of the absolute park. And I m super particular of each of those dishes. This place is an absolute gem. Don t second guess yourself. See for yourself. If this place was in Toronto, it would be 2x the price.
We went to Montreal for Table 2022. Unfortunately the food was really not impressive and the price was higher compared to other restaurants for similar quality. The service was okay. The gravlax starter was good, but nothing exceptional. The carpaccio had dried out on the plate and the toast with the brie was lukewarm and wet. The Cod was overcooked and the squash puree had a lot of lumps. The desserts were good, especially the crème brûlée, except for the pear. However the portions were very small, which is a shame because that was the best aspect of the meal. In addition, there was no advantage of having the Montreal menu at the table, there was no reduction compared to the regular price, even though that is the whole concept.
Very good restaurant bring your wine. To return
Nice little restaurant. Noisy. Interesting dishes. Excellent and fast service despite lack of staff
Delectable food, and great friendly service. Definitely recommend
Excellent service / Food is fresh & well prepared / lower prices would be appreciated.
The dishes are good but they are not very generous especially when you look at the price.
Beautiful and charming place! Friendly owners and staff! Great service! Are you looking for a restaurant to eat with your partner?! Its the perfect place! A big thank you to the team!
We came to eat recently and were surprised by both the quality and quantity. Really disappointing. $12 a joke to eat an unripe goat cheese tomato with a drizzle of olive oil, I make the same at home for $1. Tartars not seasoned, tasteless. And $30 to eat pasta that is too fatty with 2 pieces of foie gras that fight a duel. To others! Honestly review your menu. Please respect your customers.
The dishes are delicious. The starters are not very generous for the price...
Delicious food and excellent service.
We went there Saturday August 14, 2021. Generally disappointed. Correct service, a few dish errors but lets move on, probably linked to the lack of staff in the industry. The food was very ordinary. Sloppy presentation, poor taste and very small portion. We went there several times last summer and found everything very good, but significant deterioration currently.
Nice set up, very good service, interesting menu, but the food was rather disappointing.
The service is quick, the portion is decent and the food is tasty.
Delicious appetizers and mains of different varieties. From seafood to roasted duck, youll find many dinner choices at this place. The price point may disinterest some, but a quick reminder that you can bring your own wine to dine! Be sure to reserve the patio because walk-ins are rare and hot indoors!
Meal not at all worthy of the price even if it is precisely made. I can myself reheat a ratatouille bought at the grocery store (for gastronomic pleasure), take a piece of chicken breast and sprinkle it with parmesan while waiting for it to disappear... Very basic and nothing can justify this price, again minus the places.. The only quality is the server who provides. I ate in a Portuguese restaurant the day before which offered us TWICE + chicken for almost TWICE less expensive and this one was great. Fortunately the waiter raises the level of the restaurant because at these prices there are obviously better French restaurants, not for lack of having done a lot. Go your way
First of all, I would like to mention that our waiter was extremely friendly and understanding. The portions are laughable and wouldnt feed a baby. Its like being forced on a diet. One of our friends was vegetarian and we asked for a vegetarian dish. They proposed a goat cheese salad. We got a salad that had 8 pieces of lettuce, half a tomato, two slices of bread with melted goat cheese, a sprinkle of parmesan and we were charged 29$ for it. Meanwhile, the beef carpaccio with goat cheese, fries and salad was 28$ we got the salad only for 29$. Let that sink in. The French onion soup tasted burnt and bitter. There were bits of dried soup on one side of the cup the soup comes in, as if someone had poured out half of it and not bothered wiping the cup properly. We brought our own wine and were told there is a law that states that we cant drink our own wine unless we buy an appetizer and a main dish, or a main dish and a desert. Never heard of such a thing but sure, its not like a main dish alone wouldve satisfied our hunger. The steak was good, the salmon was a typical 200gram portion, fried in butter and laid over 5 or 6 pieces of asparagus. For the deserts: the lava cake is smaller than an egg. The creme brûlées quantity was so little i couldnt even sink my spoon in the little plate it was served in. When we argued the price of the goat cheese salad, we saw the owner literally chew the ever living hell of the waiter out. Never going back. This restaurant serves pseudo-fine dining cuisine that is sub-par and not worth the time or the money. Kind of stuff you see on Gordon Ramsays kitchen nightmares.
Rather disappointed with our experience at Le Square. Let s say that the end of the meal somewhat spoiled what was otherwise a lovely evening. Our server was friendly, but the dishes were a little too normal for the price. Especially since apparently if you bring your own wine, the Quebec alcohol license requires you to have a main course as well as a starter or dessert. Oddly this restaurant seems to be the only one to require this. Can anyone confirm? The salmon was cooked correctly but nothing more, and the asparagus left something to be desired. The octopus was tender but the sauce had no taste, but its good as octopus is. In summary, anyone could cook the same thing at home in a few minutes and surely season everything much better. I wonder what justifies such prices...apart from the terrace which is not theirs but simply a beautiful street with a fountain. One of us is vegetarian and seeing that there are no meat-free options, we offer her the salad with goat cheese. Perfect. A few salad leaves, a little cheese, and some garlic bread. Nothing special, but who cares, were in good company. The problem arose when paying. This salad apparently costs $29, the 2nd most expensive dish in the restaurant. The very friendly waiter explains to us that it s because they have the same ingredients as the Beef Carpaccio. We take a quick look at the said Carpaccio. It includes beef, hot goat cheese, parmesan shavings, fries and salad, for $28. So removing the beef and fries increases the price by a dollar? Our waiter mentions this to the manager/owner a tall, thin Frenchman and the latter, in a rather aggressive manner and almost spitting in his face with his mask lowered, tells him what to say to us while he gesticulates like an angry mafioso. Finally the waiter tells us that the best he can do is $22. We pay, whatever. A charlatan who uses the street and the fountain as his patio as an excuse to serve ordinary food at high prices. I dont intend to come back and encourage such a person. Go to the terraces next door, you will probably eat much better anyway.
Really underwhelming. Cutest little place with a beautiful outdoor sitting area. However, the food is poorly executed and way overpriced for the quality. I hope they can improve the taste, presentation and creativity of their dishes in the future.
we happened to arrive the day before they started renovations, so they were out of some items on the menu. we both had the salmon on a bed of asparagus, which was grilled, cooked à point, with no frills. the chocolate dessert was delicious. overall, it is fairly pricey for what you get. service was attentive and efficient.
Excellent from start to finish. Waiter first brought latched a cold hanger-bucket for our white wine. A casualty of covid is an end to the fixe prix but the food quality and flavours were amazing. I started with escargot followed by carpaccio. The chef made this with love- delicious!
This BYOW restaurant is so cute and cozy - perfect for date night but also for larger groups. Service and meal was delightful! The duck was a bit chewier than expected though the flavour was exceptional. Neither the bread nor the butter were warm - thats my only small complaint, but that wouldnt stop me from coming back!
Hidden jam! The best gastronomic experience in Montreal. The food was exquisite, service was excellent and the experience was worth be repeated. This restaurant gives you the authentic experience du cuisine francaise. Must visit
Good service, our waitress was nice. We can bring our
Very good experience!
Superb menu! We loved our meal, the best restaurant we had during our stay in Montreal.
Very good, great service. Great discovery on Prince-Arthur. Bring your own wine!
Excellent food. Courteous staff
Fast service and you can bring your own alcohol
Simple, delicious French cuisine. Intimate atmosphere.
My steak was under and half my fries were 1cm long
I feel like I missed something. The service is minimal, the plates are small and there is absolutely nothing special about the recipe. Prices are high for what you get.
20$ - squid starter was delicious however very small portions. 29$- salmon tartare was anything but basic. taste was bland. came with three tiny croutons. fries were good though. 11$- dessert was very tasty its a BYOB. small and cozy restaurant. even paid parking its hard to find nearby. not recommended for vegetarian or vegan as there are no food options for those. staff was nice and fun. i wouldn t go again.
Value for money not the best. The starters are small for the pâté and the octopus. The dishes are not very generous and tasty. The plates are bulky compared to the size of the table. Very good service and presentation.
Very pleasant atmosphere and super friendly staff
Superb terrace, super good salmon tartare and great service! Its more expensive but its worth it!
