Best Greek food in Montreal!

This was our 3rd visit to Balos. The two previous times, we had been disappointed: overcooked sea bass that had lingered under the stove, crumbs of grilled squid that were bathed in oil with wilted lettuce in a sea of vinaigrette. We decided to give this restaurant one last chance tonight and were greatly impressed! The Greek meal was faultless, everything was tasty and on point. Our server took great care of us and spoke very good French! Overall we had a great evening and we cant wait to come back to Balos! 2nd comment on November 16, 2024: Another beautiful evening and a very abundant meal, we brought back an immense quantity of vegetables. We would like to highlight Gabys incomparable service, she is exceptional!

Rapport qualité / prix: déficient. C est bon, la cuisson des viandes est touours bonne. Mais 52$ pour 4 côtelettes d agneau , très bonnes par ailleurs, et des légumes bouillis, that is it ? Pas assez bon pour le prix. 200$ 2 personnes( dont une mangeant des pâtes). Notons que le serveur n a pas rempli une seule fois notre verre sur une bouteille de vin.

What they dont mention is that the kitchen is closed between 3 to 4 pm. Its getting ready for night shift . The salads are amazing , the main course is good but dont order the Salmon its too greasy . Wines are good. I always feel good when the owner is involved and gives instructions to their staff while helping with the running of the place which was the case

The waitress was awesome, but the grilled fish was really overcooked. Even Bob the boss came to that sad conclusion when he saw the plate... but that was the end of it.

Outstanding Greek food, when I was there last the Canadian and Greek Prime Ministers where there. This is a Greek restaurant that the Canadian PM brings the Greek PM to when he is in Montreal. Cant get a better recommedation than that!

Well eaten, nothing to say But I was served by a waitress (she was the owner) she was so not patient all that bothered her in addition with an attitude and bad influence towards her staff and her restaurant I give her advice that she stays at home

Came here last night to celebrate my wifes birthday with a booking of 35. We left the restaurant completely satisfied with the evening. Such lovely hosts (putting up with 12 energetic kids), delicious dishes and beautiful presentation. Thanks for making it a special evening. We will be back!

Hands down the best service I ve ever experienced! All the staff went above and beyond to give us a great time. My friend was celebrating her birthday and they definitely made her feel special for her day. The food was also delicious and presented very nicely.

Absolutely amazing ambiance and even better food. Staff and owner is incredibly pleasant and gave great recommendations. We ordered the Greek salad, fried calamari, octopus, Greek potatoes and fried Balos tower. Everything was cooked to perfection and so flavourful. Will continue to recommend to anyone who even mentions they are hungry.

Extremely disappointing lunch. My daughter ordered the fish soup and had a fish bone the length of a finger. Just average food overall wouldn t recommend.

The fried calamari was delicious and delicately fried with the perfect texture. The salad and the seafood bisque were also very good. And the baklava cheesecake was divine. Copious amount of excellent-quality food! Its a beautiful space, and the staff was obliging and impressive. One of the best restaurant services Ive experienced in Montreal! Highly recommended!

Two friends and I went for an early dinner a few evenings ago. The waiter was very friendly at first. He found a perfect rosé for us and chatted with us about Greece. The toasted bread, served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and the vegetable chips were excellent as well, as expected from past experience. Then things went seriously downhill. We d all ordered the sea bass, and my friends orders were fine. Mine, however was salted to the point where it was totally inedible. Suddenly our waiter became much less friendly, at first shrugging off my complaint, and then asking me what he should do (duh). When I said I d like to have the meal replaced, he told me that it would take quite a while. This it did, but he did not mention that the replacement piece of fish would be much smaller than the original, and that half the vegetables would now be missing. I ended up having to take my meal as a doggie bag, as by then my friends had finished eating, and I d completely lost my appetite. Since one of my friends treated us to the meal, I didn t think it appropriate to ask if mine had been comped, as it should have been. I assume, however, that it wasn t. Quite frankly, I d expected better of a restaurant with their reputation.

Food was good, and our server was excellent. 10/10 for his service. However....near the end of the meal, the owner (whose name I believe is Bob) was yelling at the staff publicly, berating them for something he didnt like. There werent many people in the restaurant at this point, but its completely inappropriate to treat your staff that way. He was fully yelling at them - there is NO excuse for that whatsoever, at any time. From the look on the faces of the staff, it seemed to be a common occurrence - like usual behaviour they expect from Bob, that this wasnt unacceptable, when it absolutely is. He was super disrespectful, which is a shame because the entire time every staff member was working very hard - there was no slacking going on. Get some anger management Bob, and treat people better. Theyre doing great, and youre the one damaging the business.

We have done takeout at Balos a few times and have been pleased with the ease to order, quality of food and attention provided at pick up. Each time they gave us free loukoumades!

Food and service are ok, and nowhere near good enough for the prices charged. The entire experience reminded me of a tourist trap - a lot of flair without substance. Servers were rushing us to finish our meal also. Avoid.

Perfect service and fresh seafood

I had a wonderful late lunch at Balos. No prior reservation. The food was delicious! Without doubt, Ill be returning for more soon!

An authentic and luxurious Greek restaurant and really, really good. Special dishes of fish, bass, frida (red snapir), perfect Solomon, refreshing Greek salads, pasta with cheese...and more and more, all this alongside courteous and welcoming service. Highly recommended.

It was good, but a bit overhyped by friends who had been there before. One meal (server recommended) was inedible. But the veggies and potatoes were ok. I would give 3 1/2 stars if it was available.

Authentic greek food tried most of the items on the menu the seafood fantastic and had a full sea bream fish well prepared with greek potatoes and grilled vegetables

Went for a business lunch last week. Greatly overpriced for a lunch (most items on the menu at 44$). The very little Octopus i got tasted like it stayed frozen for too long. Plate came with very blend vegetables.

Very good Greek food! In terms of comparing it to other montreal high end Greek restaurants, it is cheaper than milos and still great quality. It s comprenable to Lezvos Greek restaurant which used to be a staple open on decarie. Friendly staff and easy, tasty food.

If the service had been on piont, it would be a 5 star reivew. Went there for dinner reservation was at 6. Waited about 5-10 minutes for menus to arrive. Water glasses were filled just prior to receiving menus. Ordered food and drinks at the same time as we know it was going to take a long time. We were trying to give them the benefit of the doubt as they only opened a few weeks ago. Twice we were told our drinks would be right out. At least 3 times servers tried to serve us food that we did not order - we saw this repeated at other tables, too. There were several (what I assume) were managers walking around and 2 of them clearly saw that we were sitting at the table with NOTHING for an extended period of time. We finally recieved our cocktails 35 minutes after we ordered them. The meal arrived a few minute after that. A 3rd manager did stop to ask how things were going and we told her we waited 35 minutes for our drinks. She comped the drinks because of the wait. The meal was EXCELLENT. However, they really need to work out the kinks in getting the flow and timing correct; They definitely need better training for staff delivering food or a better system. Either the staff were not familiar with the table numbers or the system they have in place could be improved. The restaurant is a large space and was quite loud; more sound absorbing measures would make the experience more enjoyable. I felt like I was yelling at my dinner companion.

Excellent service. The waiter was very rude. He didnt let us order at our leisure. Came every 30 seconds to say to order, so much so that we thought the kitchen was closing when it wasnt (we had asked) even though it was 8:30 p.m. and the restaurant closed at 11 p.m. After ordering the starters 2 minutes later he comes back to ask us to order the dishes even though we have not even received our first order. It goes without saying that our server forces us to order and order more (like a telephone salesman) he said that nothing would be enough. Finally we were full after our starters and regretted our dishes which we had barely eaten. Come and give us a total invoice at the end, didnt even bother to ask if we wanted separate invoices. Although the dishes were very simple, they were good and they used fresh produce. But not worth it for the price.

A wonderful dinner. Our first time here. We we celebrating 2 birthdays. We mentioned it to our waiter. After the dinner he brought our 2 complementary desserts with candles . All 4 of us enjoyed the dinner. Quality food. The prices are reasonable for this upscale restaurant. We spoke to the owner and his wife. Everyone was friendly and attentive ! Lamb chops were excellent as well as my large vodka martini. I shall return in the near future.

The food was good , no negative opinion whatsoever, however, I think that the prices reflect the Westmount location. Unexceptionable is the cost of a Vodka martini at $19.00 . We dine frequently at Montreal restaurants and everywhere the cost is between $14.00 -$15.00 for same grey goose choice. So I find the reviews somewhat exaggerated .

Service was slow, food was average, desserts were unappealing, overpriced.

We had a nice meal with a few gaps. The seafood was good and well prepared, but instead of handmade Cretan pasta skioufikta we got ordinary linguine, though the sauce was tasty. Also, they had a nice wine list and made a good martini but had no real beer selection--Heineken or Bud, no craft brews or local beer.

I believe the food is overpriced. The main course meal would cost you over 40 dollars not including taxes and tip, so prepare to pay anywhere between 60 and 70 just for the one course. The menu is generous with seafood options but not much for chicken lovers and vegetarians. The place is generally not busy so you are sure to have a table any time you go. The seating area outside is cute but you are right by the street so it can get noisy and annoying with cars constantly crossing the road.

The Milos or Elounda of Westmount. Excellent service. Fresh seafood and fish plates. Various classic appetizer options including the legendary calamari or octopus. Expen$ive in almost an obnoxious way. Cest la vie. Opa!

Food, service, ambiance 5*

Great food! Great service! The only reason I didn t rate 5 stars is because the last 2 times we ate there, our credit card was charged multiple times. They need to fix their Wi-Fi (which communicates with their their table charge machines) or charging system. Once they do that and credit us back $132 they owe us, we will remove this comment and change to 5 stars. I would encourage you to eat there, just check your credit card statement on your mobile phone before you leave the restaurant to make sure you re only charged once.

Food at this restaurant is delicious. The fish is amazing! Portions are very filling so you might want to share the main course after having some appetizers.

A classic Greek restaurant on Ste Catherine...all fresh especially the seafood. You will find the classics here like zucchini chips, roasted chicken and multiple fresh from the sea options like Red Snapper, Sea Bass, Calamari...etc. Service is attentive and you should not be disappointed. But, like most of the better Greek restaurants in Montreal its a bit on the pricey side. If more than 4 people then reserve in advance for a Thu, Fri or Sat night. A very safe bet in a nice hood. Parking: Parking on Ste. Catherine can be spotty especially on a popular evening like Friday or Saturday...there is usually ample parking in the back between Dorchester and Tupper.

The best authentic Greek food I ever had in Montreal! Everything we ate was cooked to perfection, the service was amazing, and a great atmosphere. There where two dishes that left a huge impression on us. The wild Greek sea bass (Lavraki) we ate was so fresh that it actually came on a plane the day after it was fished out from the Ocean and the octopus was absolutely incredible! I will say it again, Everything was cooked to perfection. The wife and myself left Balos completely stuffed! It was a great experience. I would definitely eat here again.

I was a little worried when we first arrived because we were hungry and very thirsty and the restaurant was very busy. But the food and the service were both great. Really outstanding. We were a group of six, so we sampled all kinds of food (appetizers, main courses, etc.) and drinks and it was all excellent. Strongly recommended. Definitely the best food in the area.

Great food, fabulous service, and the wine suggestions were great. Our waiter made a great Greek Red suggestion that we would not have tried had he not suggested. The food is a little expensive but well worth the price.

What can I say about this place! For seafood lovers, this place is for you! I have never eaten such good food! Fish, fresh daily. For my part I took the Chili Bar (seabass) it was the best I ate! You walk into this restaurant and you feel like family! The owner Bobby, very nice, best service. I much prefer this restaurant to Milos . Service, drinks, welcome, food really a great discovery. I went to Balos yersterday with my family and this was honnestly the best grec restaurant I ve ever been. The restaurant was beautiful, the food was simply fantastic, the ambiance on point, the staff was very friendly we even got the chance to meet the owner who was very sweet and came personally to explain the menu. I definitely want to go back there asap. You need to try it !

At dinner time, crowded restaurant. You have to be patient when parking because it is difficult to find a spot on Ste-Cath. There is no vestibule only curtains so lots of cold drafts on this winter day. The menu is okay. Succulent fish soup. We had a very friendly waitress who was perfectly bilingual in French but was so busy because the restaurant was crowded for dinner time. We had to remind him several times about lack of water, lack of utensils, ketchup and a short order time which was quickly corrected. Overall experience very good.

Food was excellent and decently priced. Bobby was fantastic! Made space for us and freely tweaked menu items! There was a downpour at closing but he insisted we wait it out and he brought us dessert for 4 and Montenegro for my wife. Wonderful night!

Excellent service and delicious Greek Food!

The food was objectively ok, but the pricing was above what you receive. The wine list was good, but the mark-up was too generous (10$ bottle of Greek wine was selling for 13$ a glass). Octopus was overcooked but well seasoned, spanakopita was mostly Kopita without much spana, and the bill made me wish I went somewhere else. Great staff and service, but they need to step up if theyre going to charge that much with better options within 2 blocks.

Started with the lentil soup and bread with vinegar and olive oil dish, delicious. Had the grilled octopus with vegetables, cooked to perfection. The service was perfect too; so many times different people were asking if i was happy with the food. At the end they brought the dessert complimentary, fresh and yummy! Thank you all!

It was our first time at Balos. Needless to say, it was a great dining experience. We were there to celebrate my parents 65th wedding anniversary and the evening was a most enjoyable one. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with its blue walls, white drapes with Greek motif trim on the windows and Greek music playing in the background. It certainly sets the tone. The staff (an abundant amount I might add) could not have been nicer. Our server, George, was courteous and catered to our every need. Everything we ordered was delicious. Kudos to Bobby and his staff. They are certainly doing it right!!!!

Another wonderful evening at Balos. Bobby and staff delivered a culinary experience that is in two words world class. The food exceeds value even at this price point. As someone who has frequented many top line restaurants in North America, Balos, without the celebrity chef driven spin, needs to be established as destination dining for Montreal. Even though the staff is at a disadvantage being masked, they still communicated warmth and enthusiasm in their service. Thank you Balos.

Very delicious, fresh and nicely plated Greek food. Service was efficient and excellent.

New Westmount location. Food was hit and miss, service lacking. Our fish was delicious and perfectly cooked, rest of our food was bland and unimpressive. Avoid the vegetable side dish (just boiled, no seasoning), grilled calamari (bland and chewy), octopus (good flavor but chewy). Food is expensive for what you get. Was so excited to have a greek place in the neighborhood, unfortunately I doubt well go back. They will need to step up their game significantly if they want to compete in this neighborhood.

I went three times. The first two were great but yesterday something was off. Normally the fries are great but yesterday came cool and limp after an interminable wait for our delicious red snapper. At over 250$ for two each time you would also expect to be recognize by your waiter.

Everything from the food, service and decor was exceptional. Easily up there as a top Mediterranean restaurant in the city.
