Best briyani in Montreal, period.

We went there and asked for the menu and the person who was standing( a Tamilian) there was so rude and replied in a very bad manner me and my wife were surprised as we are in Canada since last 15 days and ate in many Indian cuisine restaurants but did not see this kind of attitude and behaviour.we immediately left the place.

It didn t disappoint. There is only one person working the station. It s a small joint with two other restaurants operating. I had the masala dosa, it was alright but somehow the potato seemed to be going bad. The chutney and sambhar were good. Take a gander at the fridge, you ll find leftover/stale food is used. The wait time is too long, that s understandable cause it s just the one person operating. If you have a troubled immune system, this is not the place. Dietary restrictions: Vegan options available for this allergic to dairy.

A small kiosk amidst hustle and bustle of Montreal downtown. Delicious food and courteous owner. Excellent pricing. We ordered masala dosa and chicken biryani. Masala in the dosa was well prepared (perfectly boiled and mashed potatoes with perfect combination of south Indian spices). Chicken pieces in the biryani were well cooked and soaked in spices to a perfect measure. If you are looking to sit down and enjoy the food, you have to pick your time of visiting this place wisely. We visited at lunch hour, so the place was jam packed as it has two other food joints there. Overall, 5/5 in my book.

Delicious food! Ordered chicken curry, extra spicy and it was delicious! Spicy and flavorful! Owners were extremely congenial and pleasant. Would definitely eat there again. First timers beware that seating is very limited.

Great south Indian food, taste was good. We purchased dosa, ghee roast and lamb dosa it was delicious & yummy. Additional purchased goat biriyani, but not to that extent reason its four stars. Definitely recommended if you re around that place. Parking: No parking space, you need to park cross the street and walk or there is a public parking lot parallel on the side road, on weekends its 20$ which is not worth for takeout

When you discover a Hole in the wall place it usually means the owners do a few things but do them EXTREMELY well. This place is the epitome of that statement. Great Vegan options as well (I had the chick pea Currie) and Raj the owner made me try the biryani rice which tasted as if it were made in Southern Asia. I recommend it without hesitation Dietary restrictions: I m Vegan and if I can eat here ANYONE can eat here.

In Montreal Downtown, Chennai Express is a life saver for any South Indian who life thrives on dosa and idle. Feels like home.

Satisfied our Dosa carvings successfully at this place. Best sambar that I had in recent times. Chutney was a little watery, but the taste was amazing. We had egg dosa, masala dosa and podi idly, all the dishes are great and the spice on the podi idly is on point. Will definitely visit again when we are back in montreal.

I had the Idli Sambhar and it was worth the waiting time to prepare it. This is as good as it gets in terms of quality. It might be a small place but it delivers big flavours. I also had the Dosa and it s just as good.

Never going back. Owner has a temperament, we asked to cancel the order when he only packed one small box of sambar for idly/sambar order of 5 plates but he refused. We could consume only one plate idly since sambar wasn t enough and had to throw 4 plates of idly. He won t add sambar for extra money either

The quality of food is excellent

I ordered the chicken biryani and it was wonderful.The chicken fell off the bone and was soft and the rice was fluffy. Every bite was flavorful and well spiced. Really well done, and will go again.

Great experience! My girlfriend and I go here every chance we get and everything weve had is amazing! Idlis that just melt in your mouth, even better than the ones youll find in India. We get atleast the podi idli and coffee everytime we go there. Wish him well!

Its a sharing food delivery kiosk. Dosa was ok. Rest food was all frozen and reheated perhaps. There is no place to sit and eat as such. Very clustered and unhygienic with 3 restaurants sharing the place. Its ok for a quick pick up and emergency food. Not a place to with the family.

Best dosas

I m a fan of South Indian food especially Dosas and Idli. We went there exactly after the opening time, but the person on the counter mentioned that he cannot serve idlis as it takes time to ferment the batter. We had to order dosas only. The Dosa came thin and crispy but the chutney and Sambhar could have been better. I do understand that they re not fine dining and the customer needs to be adjustable with the service when you re going to pay reasonable but cannot understand that chutney was not made fresh rather it was a stored one. At the end while leaving after more than 35-40mins, we tried to order Idli for parcel but still the person at the counter gave same excuse which pissed us. After 3 days of not finding any flavorful food in Montreal. We stumbled upon this little establishment. It s a small space with 3 restaurants in one building. Pretty unique idea although a little cramped. We got the chicken masala dosa and the chicken biryani and this was by far the best restaurant we ve been to. The flavors were immaculate, the spices were perfect, the chicken was so tender it falling off the bone. Both my gf and I were extremely satisfied and had to give the owner props. 10/10 experience.

Biriyani is amazing

South Indian food is one of my favorite. I saw Chennai Express thru the Yelp list. Finally, I went to order my food. The place is situated in the middle of downtown. Its a mini food court with three (Lebanese, Asian and South Indian) resto counters. There is bar table with four and five stools. It was lunch time; the place was booming with customers. When we got in; my first issue was the hygiene, but it is so busy, the food must be special, so I try not think about it. The lineup was busy and long, I think it took 20 minutes to get to the cash to give my order. Finally I ordered paneer masala dosa, a special of the day. Then it took another 15 minutes to get my food. There is only one cook and one person at the counter. Going back to hygiene. The cook is wearing a hair net but the cashier who serves the sauce on the side, doesnt it. That bothered me a lot. Finally, I got my food, I went across to the park, joined my friends, and ate my dosa. Despite the long wait and my concern of hygiene, the food was very delicious.

This place is a hidden gem in Montreal if you are crave for South Indian food. Don t expect any dine in space here because the space is really small. But the taste of dosa is so good and fresh. We also got the idly he made in front of us which I felt really good and tasted so well made. The uncle who works there is really humble and polite. For the dosa and Idly 10/10.

Bang for buck! Cheaper than other restaurants offering same cuisine. Service offered with a smile. Dosas are yummy and crispy. So are Podi Idli and South Indian coffee! Will definitely be going back!

I had the best Idli Sambar. Not only this I wanted to try samosa but was skeptical since after I came to Canada had to eat soggy, tasteless and bland samosas. Then tried samosas here. Boom! That crunch, taste, spices took me over. Must try. Service was so quick.

Me and mom wanted to eat some Indian food and we were not dissapointed. We ate the chicken biryani which was one of the finest biryani I have eaten even though I am from Toronto.. and we also ate a chicken dosa . the dosa by its self was delicious and crispy...just how i like it .. The sambar and chutney were a hit and miss. its a good take our spot but you can enjoy the dosa there while you wait for your food.. yummmy!!

Very dirty takeaway close to our hotel, my wife enjoyed her dosa but I hated my birianni, would never go there again, we love India and Indian food, this was supposedly Keralan style but we have been to Kerala and this is not like the food we eat there.

Tasty dosa with *great* sambar - but not a crispy dosa as in the photos. wonderful chef who obviously wanted to please. However the place is with 2 other takeout restaurants & is not clean. From the floor to the ceiling it s filthy.

This is the best affordable and delicious Indian and South Indian food. My order was for take away for Dosa and Biryani. The food was really tasty. Their customer service is beyond excellence. You must try at this location or even take out, if you are craving real good Indian food. Space is less but the food is totally worth for take out with their top notch service. I m definitely visiting here again. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Amazing hole in the wall kind of place for takeout dosas and other things. You wouldnt notice it or guess it was great if you walked by but dont be fooled, this place is legit!

SERVICE : I ordered by phone and the service was very good and welcoming, but the pick up felt a little awkward with no one to greet me, that being said though, I didnt wait long to be served and the service was still warm and nice. FOOD : I ordered 2 dishes, the butter chicken curry and the chicken biryani. The butter chicken was a lot hotter than anywhere else I had ever tried (which is always a welcome in my book) but the flavor was a bit underwhelming... it was very good but seemed to lack a bit of spice and chunks of chicken. Overall Id rate it a 3.5/5 The chicken biryani was simply exquisite! While the first bite felt like a nice 7/10, the more I ate it the more I fell in love! The balancing of spices, the tender juicy chicken, the portion, all of it was a lovely marriage of impact, flavor and pleasure for the palette. Overall I rate this place a solid 4star and will DEFINITELY be making many more visits to try out their entire menu.

Best dosa

It was my first time trying masala dosa (mine was chicken masala dosa). First of all, there was only one person who did both the cooking and the billing, and he was very kind, and the food was cheap and delicious. However, it looked a little different from the pictures I found and the YouTube videos I saw, but I thought that might be because it had to be packaged. I would like to try masala dosa again when I go to southern India someday. It was a great experience.

This place is nestled alongside two other food shops and its easy to mistake its small footprint as a representation of its food. But youd be wrong. Had chicken biryani and channa dosa and they both hit the spot like none other. Very fairly priced and I ate both meals and felt very cozy after. Im surprised by how cheap the price is given it tops food made in higher end Indian restaurants. Its a gem and highly recommend it!

Amazing chicken biryani i was little bit hesitant about the taste as im from south india i know some cities from south india cant get the actual biryani flavour but this place had went beyond my expectations. Living in toronto i get to experience biryani from different regional cusines of india but only 2 places so far had met my expectations and this biryani also tasted the same. Just took me back to toronto and the place is really small inside a building along shared with 2 other food joints but trust me the biryani is must try here. Dont judge the food by its size it is much much better than fancy indian restuarents. Quantity could be a little bit more for the price but im ok with it.

I ordered Pongal and Masala Dosa, pongal was good but I prefer lesser whole black peppers in my pongal. Masala dosa was good. However the reason for 3 star is sitting area was dirty and had very bad smell. Its better for take aways I guess.

Some of the best chicken biryani Ive ever had. When I lived near by I came here once a week religiously buying 2 biryanis and some samosas. Every time I came in the owner/cook had a smile on his face. I highly recommend this place not only is it really good its fantastic for the price you pay. Hands down best masala dosa sold in Montreal. The dosa is just so well made and the masala is true to its authenticity. I enjoyed the dosa after a long day of exploring downtown Montreal. The only thing that took away from the experience is the lack of space in the shop as the space is shared by 3 different restaurants. The food however is just amazing!

I had to take to go and ate at outside BK, I ended up eating Burger King !

Good Dosa and Biryani. Fresh Made Dosa and Idli. Very Tasty. Be prepared to stand and eat. its little tight to sit and eat, shared with Italian and Chinese joint. Could be the only South Indian joint in the st.catherine. And a good one.

I was walking along St Catharine s when I saw this place. And what a chance surprise! One of the best dosas that I ve had in canada. Being from Toronto, it s very difficult to get good dosas. Highly recommended if you want to taste authentic dosa here.

The only Indian restaurant Ive found in the city that makes dosas and the delicious and unique chili bhajis. The dosas are very rich and savory, with a good amount of spice and come with a delicious coconut chutney for dipping. Prices are also very decent. The butter chicken is a little different than other places but still very good. Highly recommended

Tiny place but their Ghee Dosa, Medu vada and sambhar are absolutely yummy. Food is very reasonably priced, service is super quick and they have plenty of options to choose from. I definitely DO NOT recommend this place as the owner is rude towards his customers and asks to leave comments that he likes. Who does that?!? This place is a small stall - but the taste of food is amazing ! We ordered dosas and veg biriyani and they tasted really good . Look no further if you are craving South Indian food !!

We had a wonderful take out lunch from Chennai Express place - all vegetarian stuff, a simple place with delicious food. Everything we took was amazing and home like food - Vada, Biryani (flavour full) and podi ghee dosa. Highlight was the coconut chutney which hit to the roots of India street side style - made our visit fully worth!

Although a hole in the wall but packs a good punch. Had good food with veg biryani and dosa and vada. My son loved the dosa.

Very delicious food and a place to explore

Tried the masala dosa on a weekday during lunch! The dosa and masala inside were piping hot and freshly made. One of the better dosas I tasted in Montreal. The owner/server was very cordial and served with a smile, will definitely comeback to try out more.

Best South Indian food in Montreal. I have never had such authentic sambar and coconut chutney ! Must visit place to eat !

Very nice Masala Dosa in a very affordable price, Vadai could have been better(shape, size and internal) but overall Nice. Definitely a good place to visit for Dosa.

To me, the best Chicken Briyani in the city, hands down. It s cheap and great value for money! I ll definitely not miss Chennai Express Briyani when I m in the city.

Taste like home. Especially the Masala Dosa with perfect taste of sambar and chutney. Chicken Biryani is also a good recommendation. Naan was not that great. It tastes like normal bread. The only disadvantage is that there are three different food stations which includes chennai express with only 5 to 6 chairs to sit. No wash basin.

Pretty good dosa as he is making them fresh. You can tell there is effort into making the food. I d say it is the best dosa in Montreal. Forget the fast food places and go support this stall run by one man. Kind and caring. Take it to go!

Awesome masala chicken dosa! It was nice and spicy (but not too spicy), with crispy dosa and very flavourful and filling. Charming food court, friendly chef. Best dosa I ve ever had.

We ordered dosa and masala chai. So good!! Definitely recommend and will definitely come back whenever in Montreal again. The owner is very friendly and we enjoyed our chat.

Food is great! But the place to seat is not good as we went during lunch and was pretty crowded. Masala dosa: 5/5; idli: 2/5; Rasam; 5/5. Service: 5/5. Idli and chutney could be improved.
