5908 Sherbrooke St W, Montreal, Quebec H4A 1X7, Canada
Cozy spot known for Korean specialties like kimchi, BBQ & seafood pancakes, with contemporary decor.
There's something cool about a place so exclusive it only opens periodically and doesn't take reservations. Show up just before it opens and hopefully you get a seat. Delicious Korean food, including an amazing seafood pancake. I love the little art pieces in the restaurant too.
The best Korean dining experience I've had yet! The food was incredible, the place was cute and cozy. They serve tea at need (instead of cold water which will just make you feel full) and everything was fresh and tasty. I highly recommend this place and thank you to our friends that showed us the place!
The pancake is delicious, but the special spicy chicken is too salty for us, though the portion size is generous. The cabbage in the cold noodles tastes bitter. Additionally, there is basically no service. We asked for more water several times, but it never came, so we ended up leaving and buying water elsewhere.
Cozy authentic Korean restaurant! The BEST Korean kimchi pancakes I’ve ever had! A perfect balance of crispiness and flavor that's unmatched. With an authentic menu and friendly service, it's a top choice for a satisfying Korean dining experience.
BEST KOREAN SEAFOOD PANCAKE IN MTL!! This thing is insanely thick, a big as a personal pizza, comes in on a sizzling hot plate, crispy on the outside and so soft on the inside. They are also very very generous with the seafood. The stews to share are also fun, as it comes on its own little stove and you watch it bubble on the table as it heats up. This has been my go-to Korean spot for years, but I would definitely recommend calling in half an hour in advance to make sure they are open before making the trip out. They are notorious for being randomly closed without warning, and you may be left with the disappointment of finding a closed shop when the pancake craving has already set in :(
One of the best Korean pancakes in town. Really recommend. The price is a bit higher than average Korean restaurant. The large soup/ stew is good for two people with just the right amount of food. The side dishes are tasty, especially the cucumber 🥒.
[Update 2024-04-27] still very good for their seafood pancakes. BEWARE, this place is super popular and you might have to wait during busy days and hours. The BEST place for seafood pancake (haemul pajeon) in the city : super crispy, filling, big seafood pieces. Authentic korean food and the staff is super friendly. Side dishes are offered with your meal (kimchi, radish kimchi, bean sprout, potatoes, cucumbers). They are only open at night for supper and please call in advance or check their Facebook page, because they sometimes close without warning.
An absolutely must visit when it comes to authentic Korean cuisine. Every single dish was flavourful. The Banchan were homemade and tasted equally great. The staffs were friendly, the ambiance was nice and welcoming. Come early if you don't want to wait for too long, there's always a line up to get in.
Had the gunmandu and gamjetang. Banchan was the best Ive ever had. The dumplings were spicy, but not too spicy. Never had gamjetang before so nothing to compare with. It was awesome. The places filled immediately on opening. Staff were diligent and friendly. They got things done. Thought the seafood pancake would be too big, and I was right. It was huge. Every other table around me ordered it tho, and it looked incredible. I got out of there as fast as I could, because other people needed a chance to taste it.
Best seafood pancake in town.
Small authentic Korean restaurant.
It is close Wednesday we waited 30min without no one answering on a raining day
no.1 pancake in Montreal
Opening hours are so unreliable. They close randomly whenever they want. So disrespectful!
This restaurant is so underrated! Everything I ve had here has been delicious. If you haven t been, I highly recommend getting the Haemul (Seafood) Pajeon and the Galbi beef ribs (I like it better than the L. A. Galbi). Their Mandu are good. Simple, warm and comforting. The Dak bulgogi (spicy marinated chicken) is good, if you prefer a saucier/curry like dish. The Sundubu jigae is solid and I would order it again (but I m also trying to get a different soup every time because they are all so good). I ve also tried their spicy bred and vegetable soup, the pork rib soup is great, and I really loved their spicy cod soup. I ve also had the bibimbap and it s very good. The cold bibimbab (salmon bowl) and it s fresh and delicious! I wish they were open for lunch because I would order this again! I would skip the Jokbal. It s good, but I prefer the one from the Montreal Korean & Japanese Foods (grocery store on Sherbrooke st. West). Overall, I love this place! The portions are good, the food is tasty, and satisfying. It s one of the only restaurants that, even if I eat a lot, I don t feel bloated there day after eating here (another sign that they are using excellent ingredients). Call before going, however, because they are a small business, their hours vary (and sometimes they are closed ).
I recently dined at Hwang Kum, and I was blown away by how delicious everything was!
Always good. Extraordinary value for money. Its tasty and authentic. One of the few to still serve several banchans.
Very good food with a homemade taste. I highly recommend that you try it out.
At 6:12 pm when we called, this restaurant confirmed to us that they open tonight. After 1 hour 20 min driving from Zoo Granby, at 7:32 pm, arriving at the restaurant, they changed their words to say they were closed already. Hard to get why such unusual information (Saturday night closing before 8pm) cannot be mentioned when we called. Respecting schedule should be a mutual way between customers and restaurants.
Amazing authentic Korean
Unfortunately, I didnt get to taste the food here because of the subpar service. When I arrived, I stood by the cash machine for about 10 minutes, and despite noticing that the restaurant was short-staffed, I was completely ignored. The waiter walked by me at least 4 times without even acknowledging my presence. This lack of attention was shocking, especially considering the many empty tables were filled with used plates and glasses, indicating a clear need for more staff. Although the food looked appealing, the poor service left a sour taste in my mouth. I question how the food would taste after such a neglectful welcome. Unfortunately, I would advise others to stay away until they improve their service.
If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. I will start with negatives. This is a small family restaurant, this means the family might decide to take a day off when it is supposed to be opened. It is opened only during very limited hours. It is located on Sherbrook street meaning you will have a fun time trying to find a parking place. I already mentioned the restaurant being small, so there is often a line of people waiting for a table. However if you overcome all the obstacles above you will find arguably the best Korean restaurant in Greater Montreal, definitely one of the best. In fact it was voted #1 Montreal Korean restaurant several years in a row. I suspect its limited opening hours are the only reason it is not number one anymore. As other reviewers mentioned, if you do not order pajeon (seafood rice-based pizza) you wasted you time and money. It is definitely the best I have ever tried. Other dishes to go for: BBQ chicken (hot, but very tasty) and bulgogi (just the meat, not the whole dish). I tried almost all of their dishes and have yet to find anything bad, or bland. All the orders come with plenty of side dishes. I mean plenty even by Korean restaurant standards. So do not try to go there on Friday evening and do not forget to order panjeon - unless you have seafood allergies. Otherwise highly recommended.
The best seafood pancake ever.
Their pajeon is simply the best you will find in Montreal. Note that you can t trust the opening hours here as the owners tend to close without notice. I would highly recommend you call in advance. Food
Food was great, lots of side dishes. Wait was a little long.
I just had the most amazing Korean meal of my life. Normally I am very into salty / spicey foods so the sweeter Korean notes on Korean cuisine was always just ok to me - but I had always guessed that the cuisine of a massive place like Korea can be more than that. This place just proved it! It was recommended by an airbnb host who is Korean who said it s her fav place in Montreal and very authentic. From the outside we originally couldn t tell it was open since they have two doors and you can t see the light from outside. And sooo glad we came - I am stuffed now, the flavours were complex and intense, everything perfectly salted. I loved everything from the bean sprouts in the small plates (addictive, HYPER flavorful), to the seafood pancake and Chicken w Gingseng soup /porridge, to the peach flavoured makgeolli served in the wide metal bowl (750ml bottle - enough for two people). Even the complimentary barley tea feels tastefully made (very soft and subtle flavour, no bitterness and not much sweetness - just very refreshing). My mom is a massive Korean food fan so naturally she loved it as well. + Relaxed vibe and friendly, efficient service. And even the music was right (today they were playing Melody Gardot and Norah Jones)
Our favorite Korean restaurant! The best seafood pancake!
The BEST Korean food in town NO DOUBT
Very cute restaurant with a very unique decor and ambience. Many varieties of side dishes, food was good (many soup/stew and cold noodle options!), and service was excellent! Food : 5/5
Very delicious! Seafood pancake is undoubtedly the best in mtl, very generous with the seafood. Kalbi was also great. Service was nice despite being super busy. Their tea is really good.
They dont have an exact opening date, I dont think thats a good way of the restaurant to show their respect to customers. They can open a few days a week if they don t want to open 6-7 days but there should have a specific schedule to avoid customers having to travel far to get there and they are closed, especially when the winter in Montreal is very cold.
Amazing food, amazing service. The seafood pancake is to die for! Highly recommend.
Tried the chicken ginseng soup, pork bone soup, seafood pancake, bibimbap and pork knuckle, food is amazing, homemade feel, portions are very generous.cannot say a bad thing about this place.worth to try if you like Asian food.
Not very flavourful...I cook way better than they do...
Very cute little restaurant. The food is off the charts. I reccomend the seafood pancake.
A tasty neighborhood secret. Ten customers were lined up before it opened. Very relaxed and unpretentious. Great food.
Seafood pancake and Galbi are incredible!
This is a tiny Korean restaurant. We always have to wait at the door right before its starts or else there would be no more table. The service is great and their cuisine is merited to be mentioned. Their seafood package is the best I have tried so far in Montreal. Overall quite good, 4 stars.
This place deserves a 5 star +++. We went for a date last night and it was sooooo good! The food was so delicious. The cook/ server welcomed us nicely by making sure the table was clean and right away brought us some heart warming tea which was always refilled. He also gave us enough time to pick our meal. The food portions are really great and the best part is all the little pickled delights plus a soup you receive at the beginning as some starters. I had the beef rib+cabbage soup and the ribs were so tender and the soup was perfectly spiced, perfect for the winter. It can with a bowl of rice. My husband had bibimbap and he loved it so much. The food tasted like home made food. I loved the ambiance it was like travelling back in time. It was a really cozy good energy place to spend time with my husband. I am looking forward to go here often. We paid $49 including tips and taxes and we still felt we got so much for the price and hospitality we paid! Thank you for your generosity and hospitality!
Small restaurant, but good food and nice services.
Loved this place, the employees are nice, the food is excellent, the service fast and friendly, the prices reasonable
The only place that you can get good korean authentic food at a decent price
Best korean seafood crepe in Montreal! It was crispy and filled with fresh ingredients. The jigae was a smaller portion that i am used to but it was delicious!
So delicious! I love this place.
Nice to have samgyetang in Montreal. Ginseng chicken soup is a signature dish of Korean. Not every restaurant has such ingredients. Here is a good place
This place used to be my favourite place since 10 years, the food is always good until now everything changed, the guy server seems not happy when he saw customer, paid 29$ for the galbi plate, was raw inside and to chew is was a challenge, gamjatang soup taste so unflavoured, definitely not come back.
It s a humble spot with exceptional food. I m a vegetarian but was with non-veg and we ate to our hearts desires. They were accommodating and made the seafood pancake without seafood and it was so delicious. They start you with tea as you sit with continuous refills. It s a small space maybe 12 tables or so and one wait staff arrive early order first otherwise it gets busy but you sympathize because everyone came practically at opening. We were three table and witchin 10 minutes they were packed all proper signs of being in the right place! Vegetarian options: They can make dishes without meat like bibimbap and seafood pancake without seafood. Didn t get japchae but I ll ask next time
Back again for seafood pancake always the best dont miss this place if you love Korean cuisine worth to try
Seafood cake ceiling!
I wasted 2 hours on waiting. They should at least tell the customers how much time is expected. Don t come.
I am so happy that they opened back the restaurant. Amazing food and service. Thank you
Some of the best Korean food Ive ever had! You must try their seafood pancake, it is incredible. We also ordered the Galbi and the Tofu Stew which were both delicious. The food tastes homemade with love and the atmosphere is very cute and calming. The only thing is service is a bit slow since there was only one waitress, but it wasnt bad - just make sure you are not in a rush! It deserves much higher reviews!! Will be back soon.
Local korean restaurant, run by two people (take order, serve, cook, everything). Good food, good service. Yummy seafood pancake
Excellent food
Great authentic experience, probably the best kimchi Ive ever had and their beef? Incredible. Easy to miss and hard to forget!
great place to have soup and seafood pancake
Been eating here for 15 years. By far the BEST Korean restaurant in Montreal. Limited hours but well worth it! Delicious kimchi rice, seafood pancake, bibimbap, little apps before main meal are amazing. Lovely owners and quick, professional service.
Very good authentic Korean cuisine. Excellent seafood pancake, good ban chan and teobokki. Will come back for sure
The seafood pancakes are really good. Great service
The best korean restaurant in Montreal, hands down. Hopefully they come back to us soon. The heamul pajeon is just incredible, and I miss the mul naengmyeon so much in this hot weather. We love you Hwang Kum House, come back JUSEYOOOO
Delicious Korean restaurant with friendly service. They dont take reservations first come first serve and a small dining room seating about 30-40 so you might have to wait during busy periods but its worth it. All the classics including bibimbap, bulgogi and definitely try the haemul pajeon basically a delicious seafood omelet.
We are into trying new foods from different countries. This week was Korean. Reading multiple reviews on line we picked Hwang Kum. The reviews were pretty right on. Except you need to know what to order. We didnt. So we saw that everyone was ordering the Seafood Pancake. It was delicious. It is a definite must. Its a bit pricey but well worth the money. Its filled with thinly sliced veggies and lots of seafood. We then tried the Jokbal. It was ok. Wouldnt order it again. It is served cold and was very fatty. We also ordered the Dak Bulgogi which is served with a small bowl of rice. Not what I expected. But it was good. Not too spicy even though it stated spicy on the menu. Service was good considering how busy it was. Very friendly. courteous and accommodating. Since this restaurant is only open from 6pm to 10pm either come at 5:45 or after 8pm. We arrived at 6:15 and waited almost 1 hour before we were seated. The line was out the door. All in all I recommend this place . Next time we go we will order differently.
Amazing food
This spot is the epitome of a classic mom and pop restaurant. I came here for the first time on my visit to Montreal and just fell in love with the quality of the food. I returned back here and the food was just as great. In fact, when I think of Montreal, I think of the delicious seafood pancake made here! Both times I ve ordered the seafood pancake and the black cold noodle. Seafood pancake: It s quite different from other Korean restaurants. The ones they make here I believe has some mung beans which adds texture and a different flavor to the batter. It s also super crispy, which is certainly a MUST with seafood pancakes. Black cold noodles: the texture! Oh boy, it is so chewy and the bite to these noodles are bouncy and so flavorful. The side dishes are also plentiful, but be warned to pace yourself. :) Unlike some other Korean restaurants they don t provide complimentary refills (which is totally understandable). Yes, it can be busy here, but it s totally worth the wait.
It was similar to Korean taste and the portion was generous and delicious. This is a regular visit reservation.
The best Korean in Montreal IMHO. Incredibly delicious and an outstanding value; one of my very favourite restaurants. Their Haemul Pajeon in particular, is the best Ive had anywhere, leagues apart from anything else. Their Sundubu Jjigae is also exceptional. Do call in advance to make sure theyre open. Its family operated so there are times when they simply must close. (Part of the charm in my opinion but I have shown up, more often than Id care to admit, only to be disappointed.)
This place was recommended to me by a friend and it did not disappoint. Amazing food! I dont have anything negative to say about this restaurant. Its small, comfortable, with great service and huge portions. Highly recommend.
My favorite place for Korean. Great vegetarian dishes.
Best Korean food in Montréal. Cant wait for the re-opening
Fantastic Seafood Pancake.
I really enjoyed it. They are friendly and the food is great.
Best Korean food Ive ever had
Fabulous, every single time. Go!
Ive been here several times. Every time the food has been excellent. The plates of kimchi that come with the meal are also a good touch.
Nepotism and sundae soup are the best.
Delicious and authentic! I highly recommend it.
Everything is still as good as before! Surprisingly, it was easy to find a table today... Holiday luck?
Great food!!! So much to discover.
Delicious I recommend this place
Best Korean restaurant in town!
Heard good things about this resto but it seems like it s always closed everytime I try to go - when you check their schedule online it says it s open but you get there an the place is empty. Very frustrating because I am coming from far.
Best Korean restaurant in town... Strongly recommend the seafood pan cake...
Maki was good
The best korean Ive had in town. Need I say more? But i will - the seafood pancake is amazing and bulgogi is incredible. One day ill explore more of the menu but these are hands down winners.
Very good and inexpensive food. Friendly staff.
Hands down the best korean restaurant in montreal. Love the side dishes, especially the potatoes! The ribs and seafood pancake are amazing. Will be going back here 100%
Really amazing Korean food, probably the best Ive had so far in Canada. Had Korean food in other countries and this one is the best too. Definitely recommend. Fair prices for the quality.
Authentic Korean
Fantastic experience! We went on a Wednesday night and the place was packed, took it as a good sign. The service was quick and courteous. The food was excellent. We will be back
Love this place, the food is delicious. The place is small and cozy, not the type to have crazy party, but the type to enjoy your food and catching up
Looking for Korean home cooking? You are in the right place. It s good, generous and so comforting. Share your dishes with several people for a more authentic experience!
Small cozy place with great food.
Best Korean in town! The bulgogi, BiBimBap and Pajeon are a must
terrible service . ordered food and got kick out because they decided to close early .
Great home style Korean.
Hidden Gem in NDG. Fantastically yummy Korean food from a 100% authentic family restaurant. Prices are excellent for the quality and quantity of food. Their kimchi is astounding. Highly recommended. They do not take reservation and close at 9 so dont be late!
Best Korean pancakes ever
Good authentic Korean food
very good
I used to love this place! But it seems like everytime o want to go back its always closed for business! Kills my korean cravings!! Best seafood pancake
Amazing food. A must try!
Best Korean seafood pancake and beef galbi hands down! This is my favourite Korean restaurant ever, and I ve tried quite a few. The place is small though and has particular opening hours so I make sure to call beforehand to see if they re open before going.
Great Korean food. Little money was spent on decor but there is a NYC type of atmosphere. Opens at 6pm and expect a lineup within 30 minutes of opening.
Seafood pancake really hits the spot!
The shittiest restaurant Ive ever been in! Disgusting, I dont understand the ratings
Fantastic food, good service in a simple place. You cant go wrong here.
This is THE PLACE TO GO TO !!! from their seafood pancake to bulbogi to their dolsot bibimbap to their cold noodles, everything, everything is amazingly flavorful. Authentic to the core !!!
Delicious! A first experience of Korean cuisine and not the least. We didnt have a reservation, but our wait was greatly rewarded. You definitely have to trust the employees and take their suggestions to get a full experience of the flavors and textures of their cuisine. The portions are generous and the dishes served are worth their price.
Good Korean restaurant! I really enjoyed my meal!
Seafood pancake a must
love the pancake
The seafood pajeon is incredible. I tried it last night for the first time and I m still thinking about it today. I m not exaggerating. It s the best thing I have eaten in Montreal. The staff are very friendly and efficient. I was very impressed. There was a wait to get a table, and apparently this is common. It was worth it.
This is the best Korean restaurant in Montreal. Kalbi is really nice here and other soup menus are also great.
My husband and I love this restaurant! They have the best seafood pancake that I ever had in my life!! Very sick and crispy outside and soft in side! The restaurant is a bit small and crowded all the time! Be prepared for waiting
Average Korean restaurant
First time! Based on the comments my expectations were high and yup they delivered the quality.
This place is very famous for their seafood pancake, called Pajeon. But dont expect the traditional thin Pajeon that you can find everywhere. This version is super thick and super yummy. I also like to eat the Galbi (beef rib), the Bibimba (mix bowl of rice) and the Sundubu jjigea (spicy tufu soup with a running egg yolk). Their are many others delicious dishes so you have to come back over and over.
very good atmosphere food was very good portions could have been more but taste was good!
Good korean foods. A little pricey and long line waiting.
The best Korean food in N.D.G., line ups on the weekends, but worth the wait
Really great little place with good homestyle food. I think the kim chi is homemade, along with everything else. Good spicy tofu soup. Not the best bibimbap Ive had but still very good.
A little bit pricey, but tasty.
Fantastic little Korean place... good food and nice people
Is this place closed...? Not quite sure. We tried to go on a Tuesday night and it was closed, with no sign or anything else. Its a tad disappointing for that.
Awesome staff and food
Authentic korean restaurant. Food is delicious!! 4 stars; the restaurant is kind of small, and they are almost always closed for holidays/vacations (closed 2/3 of times when I wanted to go)
Best pajeon in town.
Delicious Korean food! Pricy but very worth it!
The room is small but the dishes are excellent. The seafood pancake is really good
The best in Montreal. Be careful reserved and be punctual the small dining room. The decor is simple but very nice. We come back regularly.
Their most well known menu item is their haemul pajeon(seafood pancake). Its on a different level than the ones served at other Korean restaurants in the city. A lot more crisper and thick with a nice texture to it. Definitely recommend. Ive tried a few of their other dishes which were fine but always return for their pancake.
The seafood pancake is perfect!
Great Korean food and best sea food pancake in Montreal. Reasonable price. Maybe make hot water available next time :)
Great place when its open (seems to be closed randomly without forewarning). Lots of complimentary side dishes and the seafood pancake was great. Would not recommend the salmon bowl, the tteokbokki (rice cake), or the kimbap.
Small Korean place with good food and great service.
The food was delicious. We had the seafood pancake, the spicy seafood noodle soup and BBQ beef ribs. The reason im only giving it 3 stars is because we got 3 pieces of meet with just bones for the BBQ beef for 25$. We felt a bit ripped off because of that.
The dishes are so pricey, quantity of the dishes are very small, to refill the side dish it will cost you 2.5$ for 2pieces of kimchi. Very importan it doest taste that good, dedinitely will not go back again.
Best Korean food in town!
Undoubtedly the best pajeon Ive ever tried. And the dishes are all flavorful. However the portions are super small for the price of the dish. A plate of bbq pork galbi was more than 20$ but the amount of pork was less than half a rack of ribs.
The food is excellent! I did not give a 5 because we had to wait 45 minutes before getting served and the plate with the eel was slightly too pricy for what we got. Some tables were not cleaned before we got there and were still not cleaned by the time we left. TLDR; They were understaff so it took a long time.
Too pricey for below average quality food (as most Korean restaurants in Montreal). Last time I was there, I noticed that there were using commercial frozen dumplings and pajeon ready to mix flour which they sell for 18$. What a shame... The service is unpleasant and rude. This place gets good reviews only by non Koreans.
Best in town
Best seafood Pajeon Ive had in Montreal !
Spicy rice cake was over cooked, too soft and the portion was definitely too small. The black noodles were no taste at all. The taste of seafood cake was ok, but you can taste the egg more than seafood. I like the spicy tofu soup with rice the most.
The best seafood pajeon you will have in Montreal. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere.
One of my top three Korean resto! Love it!
Authentic home styled korean food. Well worth the relatively expensive price for korean food. Amazing omelette and salad bowls.
To try is to adopt it.
Im thoroughly disappointed that this place is touted as the best Korean restaurant in Montreal. The Gam Ja Tang I got was barely cooked. The potatoes were white and tasteless inside and the bones were actually cold! Any respectable Korean restaurant would have a huge pot of Gam Ja Tang simmering all day.
