Restaurant La Louisiane in Montreal

First came to this restaurant when I lived in Montreal in 2000, and in what in recent years has become an annual pilgrimage features coming here again. And again. The food, friendliness, and ambiance make this a highlight of each visit to Montreal.

Great food and atmosphere. Service exceptional. Highly recommended.

Delicious food, which I unfortunately couldnt enjoy to its full extent since I was placed next to a powerful fan which kept blowing my napkin off my lap, compounded by very disruptive cooking from the kitchen area I was sitting next to, which made conversation with my parents very difficult, which wasnt helped by my shirt constantly getting stuck to the wooden chair. Im especially disappointed since Ive dined at La Louisiane before and dont remember any such noise pollution, especially none as persistent and aggressive as Id heard tonight. It brings me no pleasure to say I wouldve enjoyed dinner more had I just ordered takeout from this place instead of dining inside; Id strongly discourage anyone with hearing issues/sensitivity from dining inside if you can avoid it.

Jambalaya was excellent, and the steak and pasta were good, too. I would visit again.

the food was delicious, but it took a little bit while. interior was clean but a little bit hot.

Despite the good reviews and good food, our experience was very unpleasant. We waited almost 1h30 before being served. One of the servers we asked a question never came back to us with an answer. We couldnt wait to leave and should have done so before. At the prices it costs us today to go to a restaurant, it s quite frustrating. Dietary restrictions: Not many dairy-free choices.

My favourite restaurant in Montreal! We come here every time that were in town. Amazing food and drinks! Staff are incredible!

This was a disappointment. The food was bland and not prepared with any passion for Cajun cuisine. The servers were not particularly pleasant but very focused on pushing drinks and desert. For such a small restaurant it was extremely noisy. I would not go back.

Great staff and super solid, consistent food. Get the bourbon chocolate pecan pie or bananas foster for dessert. They are must haves.

Nice place and nice people but after reading all the great reviews, I couldnt wait to try their jambalaya. Fail across the board. It was just mushy tomato rice with barely any flavor, not even salt. I dont even remember if there was a satisfying amount of shrimp or andouille because I was just so surprised that they actually served us this. Maybe the mushiness was because it was days old and reheated more than once but thats even worse.

The atmosphere is very warm and inviting. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is amazing and their banana foster is outta this world.

They used to get gator but now they dont. If they had gator it would have been a 5star.... To serve traditional food without the Gator is sucky ...

The menu on your website is barely legible. How does it make sense to represent your restaurant like that Ill never understand.

Nothing Cajun about this restaurant anymore. It used to have this louisianna feel with jazz music playing and an open kitchen for all to see. Very disappointed with the food and timing of the meals. Getting your plate 10 mins before your other guests or your side order of fries half way through your dinner is not cool. Smaller portions for a big price. I havent been here for a long time and was truly disappointed. The trek from Ottawa to go with family certainly wasnt worth it. I wont be back. The only good thing was out pleasant server Jeanne. Excellent service.

Been over 15 years since I was there last. Not what it used to be. Guess it left with the previous owner, Greg. Food was so far below what I remember (I used to call this my absolute favourite restaurant)... its mediocre at best now. Hush puppies and Lous Famous fried chicken were both fried in ancient grease (breading was the colour of dark chocolate...) Both tasted identical. The chicken was flavourless and overcooked on the outside while undercooked in one of the 3 pieces. Kitchen timing was all over the place. 2 of our party were half done before the other two of us were fed. Then fries (that were forgotten) were delivered 8 minutes later... Come on. Ambiance is gone. No Jazz playing, Just 80s - 90s pop hits... Nothing says Louisiana like Thriller by Michael Jackson. And avoid sitting near the front door if its cold outside, the draft is very uncomfortable. a $300 dinner... Worth 20% of that The only redeeming factors were the Bayou Brew and Jeanne, our server. Id be hard pressed to return.

The owners are gems. Service is first rate. The food is incomparable in Montreal. Recommended without hesitation.

The food was great. Your a little packed in there as tables are close together and small so its hard to have much on the table. The service was spot on

Steak(rare) was a ok but the rest was great.

Honestly, its the worst food Ive ever eaten. No spices and the word is weak, boiled and over boiled chicken cutlet. I dont even remember the name of the dish because it didnt look like anything. Inedible and I weigh my words. Theres nothing Cajun here and just no good cooking or taste.

Nice atmosphere. A bit basic menu. The ingredients that distinguish Louisiana are absent. No crawfish, catfish, okra, crocodile,... the cocktails are good and the service excellent.

There are few Creole (Cajun) restaurants in Montreal. Everything was excellent. A little expensive, we went there for a special occasion. We had various dishes and cocktails, but we would have ordered everything on the menu because it was so salivating. Lots of flavors. Comforting food. To be done again for a next occasion.

Ive been going there for years and I never get tired of it. Magnolia shrimp are a real delight. The cocktails are excellent. It was a bit warm, but otherwise a very nice evening. If you like spicy food, this is perfect.

This place gets you as close to Louisiana style cooking as any. There s a hint of local cuisine with our produce. Jambalaya with the spices is bringing tears as I write. The flavours carry what you expect. Dessert if you don t try the their bananas foster, you missed out.

We used to love coming here! We are sad that a lot has changed we havent been since covid so at least 3 years. We used to come often because food was amazing! However we were very disappointed. It was bad from the start so yesterday was a humid day, we reserved to sit inside. However when we got there we noticed that the doors were wide open and windows too. There was a huge fan blowing inside so no Air! When we sat at our table this fan was blowing right in the back of me not pleasant at all so we asked to sit outside which was not that pleasant either but who cares we came for the food! So we finally get a few drinks, Caesars, which were good and then we ordered but as time goes by we realize that it was taking quite long but who cares no rush, right?!we get it, maybe they are short staffed etc finally an hour goes by and then the waitress comes to us to apologize for the wait and that we are next to get our food so another 15 min and another waiter comes to us and says its coming. Finally our food arrives, we were only 3 people we ordered the 2 pastas, the shrimp and seafood and the other dish was the Jambalaya my dish which was the pasta was okay, asked for extra spicey and it was a little better then the other 2 plates the Jamabalya was so weird.. there was no chicken? But chunks of ham? It was mostly rice hardly any andoullli sausage! You figure we are at a cajun resto and this is their signature dish, jamabalaya??hardly any spice, and tasted very sweet? So my hubby asked for some spices and he fixed it up a bit but was very disappointed. My cousin s dish was seafood creole pasta and hardly any variety of seafood, mostly muscles and 1 shrimp and a very sweet sauce? My shrimp pasta was ok but why leave clumps of tamatoe in my dish? Presentation was awful, the Jambalaya was a mess, looked like rice sitting in tamatoe soup. .and then because we waiting so long the waitress said deserts on us and when we ordered the three deserts she comes back and says only one. To which I replied its okay, we want our 3 deserts. We are 3 people. FYI We didnt come here to get free food .really? Wow. Anyways its too bad that the food lacked flavour , ingredients just 3 sloppy plates. Ps: do not waste your money here.

I have to say, I am updating my review because something happened to this place, the gumbo is now a different style, the voodoo pasta is just so so different compared to the original menu. The tastes that I loved are gone, The recipes are different, I am so sad but untill this is rectified I wont go back.

A pretty good restaurant I must say! The gumbo was excellent : nothing to say However, the jambalaya should have been more spicy (after all, thats a taste preference), but I disliked the fact there was barely any fish in it, despite advertised there was. So there is room for improvement. The service was excellent too!

In a level of managerial incompetence hard to imagine, we called to pick up some take out, and we kid you not, were told no take out tonight. Why? Because they ran out of take out containers and besides, they were busy too. Were totally gobsmacked. What a way to run a restaurant!

I was having a terrible day and the staff here took care of me so well! I had the crab cakes, the paneed chicken and some kind of awesome chocolate pecan thing for dessert. The food was phenomenal and the people that work here went above and beyond, truly. Vibrant atmosphere, cozy comfort food done fancy. Highly, highly recommend for any occasion or just because :)

Poor lighting, sticky floors in the bathroom, served ice cold ribs, music too loud, most of the food tasted like Franks Red hot and was under seasoned, all this for over 100$ for two people with one entree, one main and four drinks. Will not be back and cannot recommend.

Very good restaurant, the ideal place to experience the South of the United States, I really fell in love with the blackened fish (cod), the gumbo and the Cajun cocktail (lemonade). The portions are quite generous!

Short card. Can of choice typically from this part of the planet. The mussels were sandy and the portion served would be more worthy of a starter. The ventilation of the restaurant leaves something to be desired, be sure that your clothes will smell for several hours after your visit...

Hadn t been here in while (probably just before COVID lockdowns) had always enjoyed previously so decided to give a try. To sum it up average to disappointing. They seem to have lost their mojo. We were 2 couples, we all had crab cakes for app I had the famous fried chicken, 2 people had the shrimp and 1 had the firecracker shrimp (nice of them to make it, it s no longer on the menu) and we finished with bread pudding. We all ate talked and did the normal supper stuff. Thanked the staff , paid and left the restaurant. As we are walking down Sherbrooke street the person who always raves about La Louisiane says, how did you like your meal? She starts off with I was disappointed, the group all agree. Not sure what it is exactly, but something was lacking in terms of freshness and flavour. Unlike prior visits, everything was average at best. Even the bread pudding which is usually a crowd pleaser was ok to bad (way too much chocolate drizzle). Nothing to complain about on service side. I don t think it was just us, it was a Saturday night and the place was not packed. It s too bad, because this place used to be really good. Here is to hoping they get their mojo back.

Had an amazing dinner with a friend last night. We were 45 mins late due to a car issue but they graciously accepted us anyway even though when we arrived it was near closing. The service was perfect and our server was so friendly! My friend and I both had the Hurricane drink and it tasted just like the one I had in New Orleans, very tasty and full of rum! The food we had was also AMAZING! We had the hush puppies, spinach dip, blackened chicken and bbq shrimp and it was all delicious. We re looking to go back next weekend lol

Always a joy to come here. Great Cajun cuisine, and nice cocktails to start. One of the places we go for birthdays and anniversaries. One of my favorites.

The food was so good I was having an existential crisis while eating it. By far the best restaurant Ive ever been to and the customer service has always been top notch. Everyone should go here at least once. What an experince.

Menu thinning out, prices going up. Theyve removed items that made them stand out, and frankly havent had them available in a long time (alligator, crawfish). Taste was just okay, many mains oddly sweet, if anything. Wont be going back.

Took the 13&17 yo and my wife there, the food was excellent, the atmosphere was nice (lively), the Boreale IPA du Nord-Est excellent. Had a great time. I used to go here long ago, often, and while there was no blackboard for the weekly dishes like they used to have, it was great anyway. Will go again.

Just ate here for the first time with two friends and we couldn t have loved it more. We sat at the bar and the staff were all absolutely lovely. The restaurant was packed but it seemed to be very well managed by all and the staff were relaxed, professional, and personable. We had the hush puppies, Shrimp Magnolia, and a pecan pie. All of which were delicious. The pasta was amazing and the shrimp had a bit of a Cajun kick. We walked out of there planning when to go back.

The food was delicious, the service wasnt great and the stuff had couple of mistakes. But, totally I liked the place and would go there again!

I have been going to La Louisiane since they opened too many years ago to remember (I was actually their opening night). It has been a favorite since with 2-3 visits per year. I have tried their new menu 3 times now and have to say, after all these years, it is off my go-to restaurant list. They have shifted from true Cajun to a southern style menu and it has impacted taste and quality. Better shift would have direction been toward more Cajun dishes with gumbos, po-boys, and other Cajun added to menu... Instead, they added southern style deep fried chicken and ribs... Disappointed.

Loud. Sauces are heavy but food is good

This restaurant might have been good before but its not anymore. Went there for supper tonight. We were 2 and tooks some drinks, and appetizer and a main course each. The drinks was the only good thing. The gumbo tstes only fat, the jambalaya tastes only tomatoes, the crab cakes are not good and the fried chicken tastes the same thing I could get at KFC. Even the gravy tastes like the one from KFC. The fries served with the chicken were limp. All I can say is I tried it and I wont be going back.

The meat jambalaya here is not good. It lacked seasoning and had way too much tomato sauce and ham. A very unbalanced dish. The paneed chicken however was delicious. So where the sweet potato fries and hush puppies.

Quality through and through. Breathtakingly delicious.

Good food and great service. Had a reservation for 20 but many more showed up and they accommodated us the best they could. I had lobster gumbo with a salad and I really enjoyed it. Those that had the beef and pork ribs said they were great. Our group had just about everything on the menu and everyone said that they enjoyed their meals. The ambiance was really good also. We hung around quite abit after we finished eating and they never kicked us out

Menu has amazing choices that make it hard to decide on one dish. Friendly staff. Great food!

Celebrated my husband s birthday with our daughter. It is our favourite restaurant and it never disappoints. From their outstanding appetizers like the hush puppies and crab cakes to their incredible dishes like their voodoo pasta and jambalaya, we look forward to our next visit

We sat outside and the service wasnt attentive at all. My mint julep was tiny. only about 5 sips worth of a drink. I had the specialty of seafood jumbalaya and both the seafood and rice were overcooked. The best part of the meal was dessert, I had the creme brule. Sadly, I wont return.

Service was amazing! Jess was our server she s the best. The crab cakes were delicious so as the ribs. Extremely flavorful would highly recommend. I was a little disappointed with the Chicken Paneed and the coconut shrimp. They were a bit bland.

One of our FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN MONTREAL. Every dish is made with love and the service is allways excellent! Pasta dishes. Diansors ribs. Steak and panned chicken are all delicious!!!! But the pecan pie is one of the best desert in the world and i know deserts.

i had a voodoo pasta that was ok, i think i should have went with the seafood option instead. The crab cake is pretty decent. Banana Foster was the highlight, the rum was a nice touch mixed along with the butter and sugar

Really bad food. Place filled with a smell of the old, burned oil. Its not a smell of smoked meat, its a smell of the old frying oil. Fried food comes in this nasty earth color, Dry inside. Question for the cook: why mac and cheese was all watery and sour? Went there in 2009; didnt like it then, dont like it now.

We went there for a second time and I tried a pasta dish with shrimp and wow!! There was so much flavor and a little kick of spice . Absolutely delicious ! The waitresses were very attentive as well ! An amazing little hidden gem in NDG !

Honestly don t understand how this place has 4.5 stars really makes me think people dont know what good food is. My sister got the mac and cheese, it was watery and bland I don t understand how you fail at a mac and cheese. My brother had the 3aaa steak asked for medium rare and one half of the steak was overcooked the other half was rare/raw. I got the jumbalaya plate which was ok. For the price, you re better off going to pretty much any restaurant. It wasn t the worst place ever but there is literally no reason to go there.

very nice and friendly staff, worst steak ever, steak is extremely chewy like a piece of hard rubber comes with a little bit fries , no salad no sauce at all . Steak comes burnt outside and very bloody inside, the chef has 0 experience cooking steaks. 40$ steak should be perfect cut of meat. Place is good , but I m really disappointed about food.

We had a pitcher of white wine sangria, hush puppies and crab cakes for the appetizer, shrimp magnolia for the main course, and the pecan thing for dessert. Perfect birthday date night. Our waitress was attentive and charming. Am glad that my friend recommended that I try this place, and my date agreed that we wanted to come back again reasonably soon.

We live in the neighborhood since 8 years, and we finally decided to stop. No regrets! We went with the Magnolia shrimp and Darkened Chicken, some beers and wine, finished off with Creme brûlée and NewOrleans Bread pudding. The place itself is spacious. Its not overly stuffed with seating. The open kitchen is great to see with the cooks humming along to the music. Service was hors pair. Theres even a seated bar. We will be going back. The only ick, small though, some sketchy customers, but the place has no contrôle on that.

Our last experience on site at La Louisiana was 5 stars but this time I gave it a 3/5 for the takeaway meal because one meal was not as good and for the price, it lacked the feeling of wow. We had the jambalaya, the breaded chicken with shrimp and the blackened fish. The first 2 dishes were tasty but the fish was overcooked and the sweet potato fries were dry. This may have been due to transportation as we had takeaway. Next time we will return there because in the restaurant we loved all the dishes and the service.

Service was wayyyyy tooooo slowwwww! If there is zero i will give them ZERO! I dont blame the servers. Its the managers job to check the flow of orders and how to manage the time in preparing the food. Food was excellent but please dont starve your customers. We came at 7pm..we got our food at past 9:15 pm.. lack of staff isnt enough reason. I had restaurant before but i didnt let the customers wait..pls improve

We ate there for the 2nd time this month on Friday. Love the atmosphere and friendly, welcoming staff. Food was awesome. When they were closed for the pandemic, we ordered take-out several times and the care that was taken with the food & packaging was obvious. Love sitting at the bar and chatting with Diana. Definitely the place to go if your spirits need a lift.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. What a disappointment. I have been going to La Louisiane for over a decade and in all this time this has been the worst experience. Let me break it down. The food: like many places the menu has been reduced. There is still some of the favourites but many are not there. I ordered the blackened fish and I was only able to eat half because it was so undercooked it was practically still swimming. I ordered the lemon tort with raspberry coulees and was served the lemon tort buried under caramel. When I asked to make sure they gave us the right dessert they said they had run out of raspberry and just added caramel (without asking if that was okay.) They also had no milk for the coffee and didn t seem bothered by that. Service: They used to be the pinnacle of great service, now the staff doesn t know what goes into a coffee. When they realized they messed up the dessert they proceeded to ignore the table. I had to ask to have the table cleared and waited for over an hour for the bill. All in all I would never go back. They have taken one of NDG s best restaurants and turned it into a hole in the wall. Disappointing

Ordered crab cakes that didnt taste one bit like crab. And burnt. Ordered 3 different meals and everyone was disappointed. If your going to advertise your menu based off taste, then taste your meals before serving. Bartender was great and waiter was nice but wont go back for that.

Have been to La Louisiane many times and am always impressed!! The food quality is amazing and their service is next level! Our waiter Max was the best waiter I ve had in a long time anywhere! He was helpful and friendly and gave us recommendations that allowed us to try everything we wanted to try! We had the crab cakes, a piece of fried chicken, shrimp magnolia, the ribs and banana foster for dessert! Each course was delicious! We can t wait to go back! Thanks to everyone at La Louisiane and especially Max for such a great evening!

I haven t been to La Louisiane since I was a child. I didn t know what to expect since I don t remember my last visit. That to say the food was amazing. I had the paneed chicken dish and it was delicious. Along with the bread pudding for dessert. Bathrooms were also in really great condition. This is a great place for a family night or even a date!

Tasty and nice waiters

One of the best restaurants in Montreal! Food is amazing and very varied. Over the years, Ive had every item on the menu and was never disappointed! Love their BBQ shrimp and jambalaya the most, so I alternate between the two lately. If you still have room, the double chocolate chip bourbon pecan buy is incredible. Just a tip though: thats a hefty desert that can be shared.

Good comfy food, plate size generous. And if you get Maxwell as your sever, the service is just amazing. Drinks and food are very tasty and well balance. Service was perfect, good timing in between dishes and making sure you have everything needed, very polite employees and good atmosphere. Great explanation/recommendations on food and drinks.

Imagine if you will, a plate of Jambalaya so dense, you cant finish it. Tasty alligator appetizers and delicious sweet desserts capped off this indulgent evening with a sweet soundtrack of soul and reggae and a nice beer. I also tried the Hushpuppies, tasty cornmeal dumplings with a tangy sauce. Friendly service and the odd huge flame from the Cajun kitchen makes this an NDG highlight.

The one place where you always know you will be treated well and never disappointed with the food. No complaints here.

Was there past Tuesday, not impressed ! Crab cakes weren t bad. Louisiana shrimp was overflowing with that sauce...i like spicy...but this was like a tomato paste with a few things thrown in . G.F. Had the oysters to start...good but rather small. Chicken dish had that same sauce as I did...not pleasant. I have been to Louisiana

WOW! Had not been to La Louisiana for almost 10 years. I had the jambalaya with chicken and my wife had the bbq shrimp. Both dishes were so well presented we started enjoying our meal before it made it to the table! Our plates were hot and fresh! Great combination of spices and fresh ingredients. Kyle our waiter was courteous and polite. All and all a great night! Service, quality and atmosphere !

Went for dinner with my girlfriend this evening and it was 10/10! The Caesars were amazing and the food was delicious. Our server, Maxwell, was a gem. To top it off they were playing a collection of instrumental Wu-Tang....BOOM. Cant wait to return.

This place has been on our list for a while. We finally had the chance today and it was my birthday. Staff were helpful and had great interaction with us, drinks were tasty and well prepared. Food, although the menu is currently cut down and they were lacking some signature items, the menu was enough to satisfy our party. We ordered a full course of food for the table, appetizers included crab cakes, hush puppies and alligator. They arrived fast to the table, hot and tasty. Mains included, Blackened Atlantic salmon, jambalaya, BBQ shrimp and beef ribs. The mains took a little longer to come out, this was completely expected as wed ordered a beef rib. Again, the food arrived hot and tasty. The seasoning was absolutely on point and reminded me of the New Orleans Bayou. Desert arrived and it quickly disappeared, yummy, if youve not tried the double chocolate pecan pie, you have to, its so good. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, locals, tourists, anyone looking for something a little different with a down home feel.

Yuuuum! We ordered fried alligator and crab cakes for appetizers. The fried alligator was not dry at all or tough and was pretty dang delicious. However, the crab cakes were tiny balls that weren t worth the price tbh. Our table ordered jambalaya, La Loiusiane BBQ Shrimp and shrimp pasta, and all were uniquely delicious! The shrimp were cooked so well and were hella juicy. Also the cocktails were on point, except the red sangria pitcher was a bit on the weaker side when it came to alcohol content.

Very pretty and cozy place. The menu is coherent and there is something for everyone. Its very well cooked. The desserts are beautiful and delicious! The restaurant is not accessible by motorized chair but the terrace is in summer. Excellent service and quality products. Recommended for lovers of spicy southern dishes!

The food was absolutely delicious!! I took the Cajun combo and my partner took the Paneed breast of chicken (the waiter recommended this plate as he doesn t enjoy spicy food). The waiters are super friendly and welcoming! The only thing I recommend is that you make sure you have some time on your hands as this is not a quick dine-and-go restaurant. They take time to prepare your entrée but it is definitely worth it!

Perfection. Friendly and efficient service, delectable cuisine. A Cajun Limonade will help start things off right. And dont forget the hushpuppies! Follow that up with the House Smoked Ribs and you cant go wrong. I swear, you will be more than happy to hand over your wallet when youre done. Words of caution: no reservations unless youre a large group; and be prepared to be glued to your chair after the meal: these guys arent skimpy when it comes to portions.

Having personally been to New Orleans, I highly recommend this place. The food, the service, and overall atmosphere brought me right back. Had seafood gumbo, the Cajun combo, bread pudding for dessert, and a Hurricane to drink. Everything was so delicious, and the staff gives that same warm, welcoming feeling you get down in Louisiana!
