1879 Rue Bélanger, Montréal, QC H2G 1B6, Canada
Laid-back option with a regional menu featuring creative mains & desserts, plus sandwiches.
Truly wow. One of the best tasting menus I’ve been to by far. And for the price? Incredible value. It was so hard to choose which was the best dish. If I lived here I would’ve been coming so often. Truly recommended.
Amazing dining experience from start to finish. Each dish was so unique and well crafted. Recommend to go with the wine pairing that complement each dish. Loved that the explanations of the dishes told the intent behind each and where ingredients were sourced within the region. Atmosphere in the restaurant is quite casual and quaint. Fills up quick with guests but it made for a cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend to everyone, one of a kind restaurant and nowhere like it in Montreal.
Prix fixe menu surprise did not disappoint with locally sourced, meticulously presented food. The staff is not only part of the team but is acknowledged which is rare and special. The different courses are offered like a gift by different people who tell you in detail about the origins and preparation.
The best restaurant we’ve been to so far! The food was unexpected, the design concept of the place itself was simple and quaint which allows you to properly focus on the food. The 5 course was a surprise and each meal came with a paired wine that complemented the meal. The portion sizes were small but by the end of the fifth course you definitely won’t be hungry! So the sizes were just right, really. Would definitely recommend and definitely come again!
I have been to numerous Michelin-starred restaurants including multi-star establishments, and I can say that this matches or exceeds that level--one of the best meals that I have ever had in my life. Even at double the price this meal would have been great; to get this level of food quality, originality, and service at this price point is truly extraordinary.
Top dining experience and a must go for anyone who enjoys dining at a restaurant that truly cares about perfecting all ingredients (including vegetables!) Staff was exceptional and we can see their care, professionalism and attentiveness. The chef was so friendly and truly love their craft. This was a GEM in our visit to Montreal and not to be missed. Unforgettable fine dining experience.
Amazing dinner, absolutely wonderful progression of dishes, and super solid flavours and presentation. Service was a bit disorganized at arrival, we had resos for 8:30, showed up at exactly on time with a half dozen or so other customers showing up just after us. Had to stand awkwardly in the front for too long before someone came to speak with us. Took 5+ minutes to acknowledge and seat us (2-top) even with a table available. This was only only disappointing part of the service, and took until 9pm before we could order. Understandable with many people arriving, but it was the first impression and didn't feel organized. Everything else was spectacular. Loved having different people from the kitchen bring out different dishes. Wine pairing was completely worthwhile. Stellar dinner and experience, totally worth it and would recommend Mastard very easily to my friends.
We had a lovely night. All the dishes exceeded my expectations. I feel full but not overwhelmed. Highly appreciate the effort of every staff to deliver such an amazing experience. The only thing that I would like to feel better about is at one point, we could hardly hear each other talking. Wish we were seated on the other empty side of the room or had more spaces from other groups of customers. Will definitely come back.
Absolutely won over by this first dinner in this establishment! Congratulations to this dynamic and friendly team! Warm welcome. Cozy setting. Cozy atmosphere. Carte blanche menu of 5 courses based on natural products from the region. Explosion of beautifully combined flavors. Finesse of gold enhanced by tarragon. Very well selected wines by an expert sommelier who knows how to talk about her bottles. A rare feature: the dishes are served and presented by their performers. Experience to be repeated.
Very good food, expensive, and long waiting between the courses
An incredible experience, from the service to the food. Every little attention counts, everything is thought of and it shows. One of, if not the best restaurant in Montreal
Memorable dining experience. The dishes are presented in a unique way. A 5-course menu prepared with care and attention. The wine pairing is a must. Everything was delicious from the appetizer to the dessert. A special mention to Gabrielle Plastre, sommelier, who charmed us by passionately describing the wines that were served to us. A thank you to chef Simon Mathys who kindly stopped by to greet us as well as the entire team for the impeccable service and great professionalism.
What an amazing experience. I dont drink so I was kinda sad that I couldnt try the wine pairing but our waitress offered us a non-alcoholic pairing with the 5 courses and it was simply amazing. Definitly one of my highlights, the mocktail were incredible and all paired perfectly with the service they came with. Thank you for the evening, we had an amazing night.
I was dazzled by this restaurant. Well done to the whole team! I will definitely be back.
I really liked my experience in this restaurant. Inventive and tasty cuisine. A service that is both friendly and professional.
What an evening! We had booked the entire restaurant for our Xmas party, and everything, from the welcoming cocktail to the amazing food to the wine pairing (mocktails looked amazing too!) to the incredible service was absolutely perfect. A big thank you to everyone!
Best experience we have had in a long time. From start to finish everything was excellent. We did the wine pairing too. Each dish is presented by a member of the team - often someone who is doing the actual cooking - which is fabulous. It s a 5 course tasting menu at 85 CAD - exceptional value. We added black truffle to the first course. Over the course of the meal we had scallop, duck, walleye, mushrooms, potato, foie gras. Dessert - wintergreen ice cream and crab apple was a revelation. The staff work as a team. We were seated at the bar and had a view into the kitchen. Mastard is a must if you are in Montreal.
Food slapped so good Loved the blind tasting concept Would come again Food : 5/5
Very nice experience, 5-course blind menu. Great team and the dishes are super surprising. I highly recommend.
We love everything about this restaurant. Cozy and inviting. Food is top notch! Dietary restrictions: They accommodate peanut allergies very well! Food : 5/5 |
Very nice dining experience! Dishes beautifully executed for this 5-course tasting menu and well explained by the members of the kitchen brigade. Simple and efficient service. All for a great, successful evening!
Great value for money, friendly and warm service, lovely atmosphere. Always very satisfied when I leave the Mastard, a great experience every time!
Just WOW! delicious from start to finish. Everything is perfect!
We went to Mastard on November 7th. What a memorable experience. We were seated at the bar and the server was extremely nice. The atmosphere was superb and we were lucky enough to have a view of the kitchen where everyone seemed to be having fun. The menu was fabulous and well balanced. The owner even took the time to come and chat to us. Mastard I recommend to everyone!!!!
Very disappointing evening. I do not recommend this restaurant. I couldnt wait to go though... First of all, know that you will not have the menu at the start of the service (only at the end, whats the use?). I expressed my surprise which was met with the greatest disdain, as if I could not understand the concept. Thats what I was told: thats the concept. Now, how do you order wine if you want it by the bottle? I had seen examples of food and wine pairings and the ideas didnt appeal to me. So I wanted to order my wine myself, which seems to me to be an acceptable consumer wish. The answer? Take white, rosé or orange wine! Almost anything after all! The meal started off well with an excellent lettuce pie. The second course was ok, a dish of beans which you think is hot, but which is cold, covered with the eternal espuma / mousse. Then it definitely goes bad. The dish of raw scallops in some type of cold corn cream mixed with sausage paste...Im not sure I need to say more. I didnt eat much, they asked me why, they insisted and I finally said why I didnt like it. I was met with the same reaction of disdain. Dont ask why if you dont want to know! Then there was a trout dish, a hot dish. The first of the service. The trout was cooked to perfection, but it was surrounded by a (no other kitchen work) cold slice of tomato. The result: the dish was cold when it arrived. The last savory dish was a piece of guinea fowl with a sausage. The whole thing tasted so smoky that I thought I was licking a campfire. No other taste could break through this extreme smoking. There were two of us, we left the plates almost intact. Nobody asked for anything. As for dessert, it was good, but I dont remember what it was, so probably not spectacular (fruit, whipped cream, something like that). I ate at Grant Achatzs Alinea at Wylie Dufresnes wd-50 and other innovative establishments for their time. I understand the idea of a fixed menu, the desire to push back the barriers of creating emotion through shock. Here, thats not it. This is arrogance with limited talent.
One of the best restaurants we have had in Montreal. The service was pleasant and warm, the atmosphere cozy and simple. We really liked the presentation of each dish by the kitchen staff. The dishes were all very good! Just a little disappointed with the food and wine pairing, the wines were overall nothing more.
Fantastic meal with some of the most flavorful sauces I ve ever enjoyed.
We went to Mastard for a couples anniversary, it was our first experience. We had the 5 course menu with pairings. The first appetizer, a lettuce tartlet, surprised us, it was refreshing and delicious, what a start! Then we received the first course, tomatoes and scallops. Each tomato was prepared in its own way, it was a lot but it worked well! 2nd course, Swiss chard, matsutake and beans, in a mix of broth and emulsion sauce. It was good, I enjoyed the flavors but it was perhaps less refined, in addition to being a little salty. 3rd course, sous vide fish with oyster sauce, spinach sauce and bread cavatelli in sauce. For the fish, not much to say, superb sauce and magical cooking. Although I liked the cavatelli, they were way too salty. It was suggested to mix everything with the fish but the salt masked any other taste. 4th course, guinea fowl, foie gras, endive, dijon sabayon and sausage. Good dish in general, but a little too many elements. More emulsion sauces and lots of salt...plus, most of the wine pairings were good, but the cinsault offered with this dish was lost in the richness and smokiness. It would have needed more tannins, a nebbiolo perhaps? Finally, dessert. Black tea cream, honey crumble, apple jelly, it was refreshing, tasty and full of texture. Beautiful finale, we loved it! We also received some sweets at the end which were very good. In short, 4/5, we risk trying the experience again. The service and atmosphere was superb, well done to everyone. I believe that with 1/2 more acidic elements (fermented radishes for example) and less salt, a 5/5 would have been achieved. Hoping these fixes are made!
Amazing food and mocktail pairing, great for pregnant women :) the drinks paired well with the tasting menu we got. Every dish was creative and well-balanced.
Exceptional experience, the menu is always excellent and the price remains reasonable for the quality of the experience. They have now moved only to discovery menus. (Note: the associated photos are at the beginning when there was only takeout) Dietary restrictions: They take into account food allergies and intolerances.
Very nice experience, the food is excellent, the service pleasant and the prices correct. I will come back with pleasure
Underwhelming food and pretentious service. Would not recommend
Amazing experience here. They are serious when they say they can accommodate not only food allergies but dislikes - this is a true sign of unpretentious. All the dishes were incredibly varied, nothing Id ever had before (in a good way), and well balanced. Great crowd too, again not pretentious just clearly people who enjoy good food. I very much hope to return perhaps during another season to try a different set of ingredients. Bravo!
An exceptional culinary experience and one of the best of my life to date!
My god everything was fantastic! Perfect! The seasoning, the presentation, the food and wine pairing, the service! Wow! The tastes are frank, clear-cut, without fuss, nothing but happiness!!! Congratulations to this entire sublime team!!! We will be back!!!
Very nice first experience at this restaurant. Great choice of 4 signature cocktails to get this tasting menu off to a good start. Im just going to give 4 stars for the cuisine because for my part I expected to be a little more surprised for this tasting menu where there was the title carte blanche on the menu. Everything was prepared very well but not a touch of madness. The service was top notch with Julien our server, and it was also good to see the whole kitchen team serving. The restaurant is not noisy at all which makes the time pleasant. The food and wine pairing was excellent, very good choice on your part. Thanks to the kitchen for the Louis dor fries, a very nice touch for gourmands like us. In short, a great time spent in your establishment. Best wishes.
Superb table with tasty dishes and what about the sauces, it is not for nothing that a spoon is made available to us. Carte blanche menu served by the chefs. My friends had several dietary restrictions and everything was respected. Simon Mathys is a true genius of taste combinations. Ive eaten there three times already and Im already looking forward to the next one.
Fourth time for us at the Mastard and frankly even better than before. The work that has been done to improve the acoustics of the room and its general organization makes the difference. The restaurant was previously noisy to the limit of bearable, it is now intimate, much calmer, intelligently arranged and pleasant. Thanks again for making these thoughtful changes. Big mention also to the service. From the first phone call for the reservation to the table service we came across a charming, very professional young woman who happily raises the level of service as we understand it. Present without being intrusive, discreet, courteous and professional, it is also thanks to her that we had a very good evening. On the plate it s still just as solid. A chef and a team who bring their own personal touch to the dishes by sublimating simple ingredients and in complete harmony. The sauces, juices and emulsions are of a high level In this period where an earthquake in the gastronomic world is about to take place in Quebec. The red guide shows up and should send (if he hasnt already done so) a little Bib to taste the menu. From my point of view they come close to the Michelin star without any problem and with a few corrections it will be in their pockets shortly. The only downside and not the least for me is the choice of wines (by the glass) which is really not up to par. I understand that import tariffs are a big obstacle but it would take a slight increase in their prices to meet some good labels worthy of the dishes served. Thank you again, we will definitely come back.
Interesting food, sommelier who speaks loudly and at the end of the meal after paying a $400 bill, we socialized with our neighbors and they kicked us out of the table for freedom. No class
Excellent restaurant, 5 courses with wine pairing, I recommend to anyone looking for a culinary experience!
First visit to this place and it wont be the last. The menu was decided in the kitchen and they accommodated allergies well. The wine accompaniment was very interesting and we made some great discoveries. The service is courteous and friendly. For beer lovers, luckily they have Wills, a great local microbrewery. We had a lot of fun, thanks to the team!
Good food, but small portions for the price, I was still hungry afterwards. Additionally, although they offer alternatives for allergies, in one of the two dishes with allergens (seafood), there was nothing to replace the scallop, even though it was a main element of the dish, a little disappointing. Dietary restrictions: Although they offer alternatives for allergies, in one of the two dishes with allergens (seafood), there was nothing to replace the scallop, even though it was a main element of the dish, a little disappointing .
Exceptional restaurant!
A real experience to live! The staff is very warm and welcoming! All dietary restrictions have been taken into account and respected! The attention paid is beyond wonderful! I highly recommend going there to try! I came out with a full stomach and the desire to relive an identical experience!
My favorite restaurant by far! I have a lot of dietary restrictions and they were able to accommodate my restrictions while still being cordial! Unique experience to be repeated!
Excellent, beautiful, warm. Three words that describe the Mastard. Thank you to the staff for this very pleasant moment. I recommend.
Quite an experience!
An exceptional place, blind menu, the chefs were able to perfectly accommodate our dietary restrictions. Everything was delicious with very pleasant service too, and reasonable prices for this quality of experience
Extremely good food and service, highly recommended, as good as it gets
One of the best addresses in Montreal. Beautiful combinations of land and sea, good products, all working with this love of taste. A great experience, thank you
Excellent exceeds my expectations
Magnificent table in Montreal. Precise and tasty cuisine, traceability of products with the possibility of taking the menu with you. The room is cozy, the service impeccable. In short, dont hesitate, best restaurant in town.
Delicious and interesting dishes. Unpretentious location and vibe for this type of place. I have been twice and both times everyone was impressed. I look forward to going back.
I really like this restaurant. Jn pleasant together. To do again. Thank you
Restaurant with refined cuisine and service. I recommend as a couples outing. Fixed menu with reasonable prices for haute cuisine.
On the whole, excellent food that is marred by gimmicks. Everyone who comes gets the carte blanche menu, meaning: no menu. You get the same tasting menu they are serving to everyone that night. That is the first gimmick. The send gimmick is that the food is served by the people who prepared the food, rather than by wait staff. While the food was prepared flawlessly and with mostly interesting recipes, the cooks were not as adept at explaining it as the professional wait staff I would expect at this level of restaurant. Our only issue with the food was that the peas were not fresh and that a couple of sauces were somewhat salty. In addition, coordinating service like this is apparently not possible. For our meal, wine pairings sometimes arrived before the food and sometimes after-- meaning that the food sometimes got cold while the wine was being presented and explained to us. On the whole, the experience left us cold, and we wont be back.
Incredible restaurant- not the kind of place I can afford regularly but for a super special occasion it was a fantastic dining experience. Each course was delicious and creative, and everyone on the staff was knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly.
A sublime establishment that never fails to amaze us. Definitely the restaurant to go to if you want a unique gastronomic experience!
The waiter, a little redhead, made sarcastic remarks towards me. Not cool. The wine was too hot and should have been served at 14°. I have already had lettuce tart in the past and it was my favorite, not yesterday, too salty like all the dishes. Yet I love salt! The first dish, tomatoes, was ordinary. Too strong and too salty. I liked the use of lovage. From there, pure joy. I didnt like the fact that we were offered mushrooms for $15 for the third course. If they were appropriate, they simply had to be included in the dish, after all we already paid $85. I go to mastar for: the beauty of the dishes, the importance given to vegetables, the beautiful green sauces, and the subtlety of the tastes. Well done.
Discreet storefront in an out-of-the-way neighborhood, I walked past it without noticing it, I had to turn around ^ ^. It had been on my list of restaurants to visit for a while and finally, I had the privilege of going there. I really liked the sheet which highlights all the people who work, whether in the kitchen or in the dining room, to offer us impeccable service. What they are doing is not easy and it is very commendable to name all these people, each as important as the other. The establishment offers a unique 5-course menu (wine pairing extra). Not drinking alcohol, I was tempted by a mocktail, Soda Mousse, which is really excellent. Note that the price of the mocktails is very reasonable, so no reason to deprive yourself of them! The dishes are creative, fresh, always well explained whether by the chef or other members of the team, the portions are well proportioned and you come away satisfied, without feeling too heavy in your stomach. We cant wait to go back!
What to add when everything is perfect? The cuisine is inventive, delicious, the chef is talented and there is so much work behind each dish. The service is impeccable and cordial, without any fuss. The wine pairing allows for great discoveries, but at the next meeting I would probably opt for a bottle that better suits my tastes. This is very personal though. Well done!
I have never had a better meal. The wine pairing is a must.
Wowowow! A paradise for the taste buds. Atmosphere a little too tight for my taste but the staff seemed cool and passionate!
Likely one of the best culinary experiences that my wife and I will ever have the good fortune to enjoy. Each course was creative and perfectly executed. Service was exceptional, en Anglais et en Français. Another, likely overlooked, aspect to Chez Mastard is that it is likely too expensive for a person or couple to bring their child or children here; this establishment clearly caters to adults who want to enjoy an evening without the interruptions of kids or teenagers. Lets hope it stays this way! We will be coming back in the fall to have this experience again, without a doubt.
Definitely my best dining experience to date. Everything was succulent, fresh, crunchy, perfectly seasoned. 5 days later, my taste buds still remember the halibut and its butter and miso sauce... Dietary restrictions: They adapt very well to dietary restrictions
Wonderful experience, didn t expect to love the halibut so much . All food is locally sourced. We truly appreciate that
Very nice discovery! The food was excellent. The employees were friendly and helpful. I recommend ++++ Dietary restrictions: The dishes have been adapted for my gluten intolerance.
Excellent dining experience. A very nice discovery with refined and very tasteful dishes. To discover and rediscover!!
Very good restaurant, I love the fact that I dont have to choose. All dishes were excellent. The wines are sometimes a little less interesting but they make us taste something else. 2nd time for me and I will happily return! The dishes are well explained, it s nice!
One of my favorite restaurants, the food is extraordinary! Always a pleasure to see what the fiery team will concoct for us!
This restaurant was such a great experience. It is not a pretentious restaurant. The food is incredible, and I really enjoyed the food journey. The amuse-bouche was a warm welcome, homey flavours presented in a fresh way. Every dish was very different, with great textures and very well balanced. I would love to go back there the next time Im in town and try their new creations. Merci !
Best meal we had in Montreal!
One of the best restaurants in Montreal, no doubt. Amazing from start to finish.
It was ok. You know when the presentation exceeds the taste. It was as though everything was in a sauce and the food lacked the beauty of the actual ingredient flavours. At this price point all details need to be observed and the dishes were chipped. The service was ok. The wine pairings paired well, but weren t great wines. Overall when you are nearing the $200 per person after tip you should come back wanting more. Aside from the dessert that is the only dish that I would have had more. Oh yes, and the main course a little more of the 2 inch in length piece of beef served. This restaurant was highly recommended but I unfortunately won t be going back.
Its beautiful!!! It s excellent!!! The service is perfect!!! The chefs do not hesitate to serve you and present the dishes. Not to mention the menu which is renewed almost by the minute based on local and seasonal products. An experience to live!!! Well done and thank you!
Eat here.
I loved discovering this restaurant yesterday! The tasting menu is delicious. The service is also impeccable with very kind and experienced servers. The prices are, in my opinion, reasonable considering the quality of the restaurant. The only thing will be to perhaps dim the lights a little to provide a better atmosphere but otherwise 5 out of 5. Amazing!!
Had a wonderful experience here. Really warm and friendly service. Each dish was introduced by different members of the team. The tasting menu was seasonal and the dishes had a good balance between complexity, interesting preparations and ingredients everyone is familiar with.
Dinner at Mastard is not just dinner. Each bite makes you proud to live in Quebec, each plate pays homage to the territory where we live. Both in our plate and in the atmosphere, we feel modesty; every ingredient that is incorporated into the plate is tasted, there is no concept of star of the show . Each food brings its own say to the plate and that is the impeccable arrangement of these different flavors; not in one but in 5 plates; which makes me take my hat off to the Mastard team. This absence of star of the show is also felt just as much in the atmosphere of the restaurant itself, with the entire Mastard team being presented to us; not just the chef and waiters. For someone who has worked in the restaurant industry for a long time, I can say that this humility is rare, the chef is very often the star and no one hears about the other cooks. In this restaurant, we would not be able to distinguish the chef from the other cooks if we did not know beforehand what the chef looks like, and I admire this characteristic of chef Simon Mathys, he places emphasis on all the members of his team by not making any difference between him and his team. Many cooks are able to buy a high-value protein from another corner of the planet and cover it with a specialty sauce that is the only flavor addition to the plate, a sauce in which the other ingredients are lost. The Mastard team distinguishes itself from this type of chef by using ingredients from their surroundings; sometimes very simple, but transforming them into absolutely impeccable dishes, without losing the flavor of a single ingredient, which is an incredibly difficult task. Dining at Mastard involves embarking on five trips to the different regions of Quebec, without knowing where the plate takes us before tasting it. You have to experience it to understand.
Loved everything about this restaurant. From the service to the food, everything was perfect. Price is very reasonable for the quality and amount of food served. Local ingredients with French inspiration.
A1 service, the dishes are thoughtful and what can we say about the simply perfect food and wine pairing?
Loved everything about Mastard. The cocktails were phenomenal, I had the colada which was perfectly balanced and delicious. My husband had their green, herb drink Which was also absolutely delicious, very fresh. We started with an amuse bouche which was delicious. We added the wine pairings but just one since there was 12 oz of wine total (3 per course) and we wanted to have a cocktail as well without getting completely drunk. Splitting the pairing was the perfect amount and the wines were delicious - white which I normally don t prefer but perfectly paired. Everything was absolutely beautiful, well balanced and had exceptional flavor. I enjoyed every bite - I ve dined at a lot of Montreal restaurants but this one took the cake. While it s expensive, it s completely worth it. The flavor, service, atmosphere- all wonderful. And the best part for me? You leave satisfied and not still hungry. We will definitely be back. Thanks for a lovely experience! Dietary restrictions: They were excellent at accommodating my gluten and corn allergy - I was able to enjoy all the dishes without much modification to the dishes I could see.
Great dining experience
Simon Mathys and his kitchen brigade do an excellent job. Value for money rarely seen. Worthy of the greatest restaurants in the province at a fraction of the price. Everything was executed to perfection. The walleye was phenomenal. Reasonable wine prices. Thanks to the less expensive rent which allows us to have access to a large succulent table. Do we recommend? Obviously.
A perfect evening. Incredibly kind and attentive staff. It s the perfect balance between discreet and overly present service. They are there at the right time. The dishes are beyond reproach. Afterwards its a question of taste. But they are extremely well executed. The price is more than fair. There is a lot of work that goes into creating this kind of dish. Congratulations and long life.
I ate like a fancy french king
Restaurant Mastard offered me an exceptional gastronomic experience. The service was impeccable. They were always there at the right time to meet my needs and provide me with the most pleasant experience. The dishes were all more delicious than the others. The quality of the ingredients, the finesse of the flavors and the precision of the culinary techniques were impeccable. It is an inventive and daring cuisine that tickles the taste buds and invites discovery. The price is completely justified given the exceptional quality of the dining experience offered. The Mastard Restaurant is an essential address for lovers of gastronomy and haute cuisine.
My favorite restaurant so far. The handling of flavors, textures, colors, it is simply beautiful to see the three-dimensional thinking of the chef through his dishes. We have visited different restaurants within the same range and Mastard is definitely a restaurant I want to keep coming back to. At all times the service was excellent and the drinks were exquisite.
just wow, quite an experience, we loved it from start to finish, the food, the service, everything was perfect, we will obviously go back , thanks to all the staff who are really very friendly, super nice evening
2nd visit for me last night and once again a wonderful experience. The dishes, the pairings and the SAUCES.... wowww! I also appreciate that the kitchen team presents their creations to us themselves. Excellent knowledge of wines and a beautiful menu. To try!
Everything was totally perfect, the service, the staff and the food were impeccable. Me and my girlfriend really enjoyed it. Looking forward to going back
A flawless dining experience, well done
My expectations were very high and high expectations often mean disappointment! Well no! From reception to exit, the service was very warm and we felt at ease as soon as we entered Mastard. Each dish was thoughtful, with complexity in terms of taste and textures. I also recommend the food and wine pairing if carte blanche is available. I love the concept that the kitchen team and the chef come to present their dishes. Shoutout to the entire Simon Mathys team in the kitchen and the team in the dining room for this evening!
The experience was superb in every way. The welcome and careful service. The team is highlighted on the menu and it is rare enough to be highlighted. They break the rules with the cooks who come and serve you the dishes at the table. Allowing you a privileged exchange with them and in particular with chef Simon Mathys. We were lucky to have a sommelier full of attention and a love of his work . The dishes are a real invitation to discovery: a marriage of flavors, textures, colors and a great use of local products. A big congratulations to you! Well come back!
Excellent experience, great food and wine pairing. Every dish was unique and special in a way that makes you curious of the next dish since you dont get to know the menu. Top notch service, highly recommended!
Excellent food and services. Really above what you can usually see and taste in Montreal. The dishes were creative and surprising, we can see the technical mastery of the kitchen team. Without forgetting the impeccable service. The little summary map with the origins of the products at the end as well as showing the staff list are a very good idea. In short, an excellent evening and a great discovery.
We went to the Mastard restaurant yesterday and we were completely won over. From arrival to departure we were looked after by the entire team and had exceptional service. We chose the food and wine pairing and felt that each combination was chosen with care. The juices and broths were remarkable, the cooking perfect, and the texture pairings refined. We found it to be gentle and delicate cuisine. What we particularly appreciated: the attention to detail (we left with a small menu where the main ingredients as well as the wines are written, a map is presented with the name of each person in the restaurant - cook, service, etc.), care for food intolerances, gastronomy without a snobbish side, we feel their love for cooking, for Quebec products and for wines. In addition, the price-quality ratio is excellent! We will definitely come back and invite our loved ones. Thank you for this memorable moment :-)
The problem with these kinds of restaurants is that the menu is constantly changing. I may have loved last weeks food, but this week it wasn t my favourite flavour combinations. That being said, the ingredients were local and innovative and the presentation impeccable and original. The service was fantastic; the music on point; they accommodated all of our allergies with grace; the bathroom hand soap smelled great; and I loved the dry flowers and decor. We also mentioned that we had a babysitter on the clock, so they were understanding and sped up the pace.
Wow! A 5-course blind tasting menu formula. The 2nd time we went and everything was impeccable. The dishes are unique and the combinations of tastes are truly sought after and of extraordinary finesse, especially for the more than reasonable price. The service is very friendly and unpretentious. The atmosphere is calm and ideal for a couples outing. Perfect for special occasions.
My favorite restaurant!
Wow! What an incredible culinary experience! The service is impeccable and warm. The search for tastes and flavors with local products, techniques, textures and colors of each dish was a marvel! The brilliant idea of presenting the whole team behind the experience is unusual and so inclusive. I vote the Michelin star for this establishment!!!!
Extremely creative meals highlighting Quebec products. Impeccable service and very interesting wine pairing. A memorable experience to repeat as their menu changes.
There were 6 of us and we had the tasting menu with wine pairings. A marvel! An ingenious, sophisticated, complex and diversified cuisine throughout the services. Attentive, pleasant, friendly, attentive service. A staff who knows their cuisine and wines well. In short, a great time!
Honestly one of the best restaurants I have been to Eaten The service was impeccable with explanations on the dishes and the pairing with the wine The wine was chosen with care The dishes are gently arranged without missing the little kick of intense and impeccably chosen taste
My rating 4.9 out of 5. Tasting menu with wine pairing. Simply WOW and WOW and WOW again. And the service is also a 4.9 out of 5. Price $85.00 for 5 courses and $60.00 for 5 wines, very reasonable.
Excellent tasting menu, fresh, tasty and inventive. Judicious use of local and seasonal products. The atmosphere and service were friendly and pleasant. We had a great evening!
An unforgettable experience! We were overwhelmed, as much by the quality and originality of the dishes, as by the perfect pairing of the wines and the impeccable service. Hats off to the whole team, it s a big favorite. What can we say about the kitchen team who comes to serve the dishes, it s a superb idea.
An exquisite culinary experience at the restaurant at Le Mastard We (my partner and I) recently had the pleasure of dining at the Mastard restaurant, and I must say that our experience was simply exceptional. The real star of this memorable evening was, without a doubt, the food. Every dish we tasted was a true culinary masterpiece. The flavors were harmoniously balanced, the ingredients impeccably fresh and the presentation was worthy of an art painting. Each bite was an explosion of deliciousness, and each dish was unique and full of taste surprises. Chef Simon Mathys truly created a gastronomic symphony that exceeded all our expectations. The chefs talent is unmatched. His mastery of culinary techniques and his creativity in preparing dishes demonstrate rare expertise and creativity. Each plate was a true spectacle for the senses. The bold flavor combinations and surprising pairings of ingredients revealed a palette of tastes and aromas I had never experienced before. He is undeniably the best chef I have had the chance to discover so far. The service offered by the restaurant team was simply perfect. The staff was attentive, warm and professional. They were constantly attentive to my needs and ensured that every aspect of my meal was perfectly orchestrated. The servers were knowledgeable and passionate, and their knowledgeable recommendations added an extra dimension to my dining experience. Their knowledge of wines and their ability to pair them with each dish was remarkable. Now lets talk about food and wine pairing. It was a truly sublime experience. Each wine chosen to accompany the dishes was perfectly matched, creating an unforgettable synergy between the food and the wines. The flavors complemented and enriched each other, creating a truly exceptional taste experience. Each glass of wine brought a new dimension to each dish, highlighting the subtleties of flavors and textures. Overall our experience was nothing short of amazing. The exceptional food, the talent of the chef, the perfect service and the sublime food and wine pairing made this dinner an unforgettable culinary experience. I highly recommend this restaurant to all lovers of good food. It is a place where you can discover new taste sensations and be transported into an exceptional gastronomic universe.
Excellent meal. Very good value for money.
Dietary restrictions: They are super accommodating of gluten sensitivity. Food
Great culinary experience with an interesting combination of ingredients and great presentation, I see why the chef is highly praised. Amazing service. Good wine selection. Tasty cocktails. Would go again when the menu changes to see what they come up with.
Experience to live. From service to plate!
Extraordinary food but very disappointing service. Since when is four dishes with sauce fresh and summery ? Since when does the staff no longer greet customers when they leave when we have just spent $150-200 per person? Maybe Im old fashioned, but there are plenty of other restaurants in Montreal, just as good, less expensive, better located and above all: with service worthy of the chef.
For the price you pay , It s average . Apetizer and desert were very good and the rest were good . Service was very long. Unfortunately, I had better experience
Amazing! Its worth Michelin stars without paying the price. My big favorite.
Will comeback for sure. Very inventive and totally deserved the Press high praised. Vegetarian options: Menu that chef can tailor to your requirements (need to advise the restaurant ahead of time)
Delicious! Pre-established menu and the dishes followed each other perfectly. I will go back in a few months to try other flavors, without hesitation. Only slight disappointment: having choices of wines that are not natural. I like natural wines but I didnt really appreciate the wine pairing which only offered that.
In a sober premises, we tasted the gastronomic menu at a very competitive price: the dishes were absolutely delicious, fresh, tasty and original without overly destabilizing the taste buds. Refined seasonal cuisine. Great service and attentive busboy. A must in Montreal.
The experience at Mastard is entirely memorable. The atmosphere is welcoming, romantic, and intentional. The entire staff works as a team, highlighting their strengths including the presentation of the food by the chefs. The wine pairings were a perfect fit and if it was polite to lick the plate to devour every morsel served, I would have for every dish.
The concept is special, small dishes determined in advance by the chef for all the restaurant s guests. The service is also surprising, a different server serves each dish. We appreciated the precision of the dishes and the chefs obvious passion for presentation. The lettuce pie was really delicious. This type of restaurant, with multiple services and tiny dishes (one sip of sauce, two bites of meat) is not for everyone. In conclusion, I would definitely have paid more to have more, either more services or more food per course!
Simply excellent from starters to dessert.
Cant find any flaws during my visit. I enjoyed all aspects of it. Great, really great tasting and great looking food.
Congratulations to the whole kitchen/service team who all work together! Each plate was tasty, the right temperature, the flavors exploded in the mouth and the pairing with the wines was really good! Thanks to Frédérique for her explanations throughout the service! She asked us from the start if there were foods to which we were allergic but also foods that we simply didnt like! The kitchen adapts!
Wow! An experience worth it. The food was excellent, with each dish bringing new, fresh, seasonal flavors. Stunning!
A very lovely prix-fixe spot. Small, well-maintained dining room, cool cocktails, delicious food. We did the wine pairing (5 courses + 5 small glasses) which came to $145 + tax per person which was very reasonable. Will return!
A superb evening, plates full of passion, technical accuracy in their creations. Tastes, that s what sums up this experience well. When the message gets across..., I say thank you to the whole team who allowed us to have a great time with friends. See you soon
What an unforgettable experience! THANKS
Superb culinary experience. Thoughtful and innovative wine pairing, sustainable cuisine, rich in flavors of the season. Details make all the difference, service is impeccable and having the kitchen team come out to introduce each course is enriching. Restaurant is a little warm on hot summer days, which is par for the course. I believe in constructive feedback so I will say that the only thing that would have made the already great experience even more enjoyable would be if the seating was a bit more comfortable, but something I can overlook for the trade of of the flavour palette offered here.
Each excellent dish was prepared with exceptional skill. The wines were frankly excellent. My palate discovered a new dimension. Well done and thank you to the whole team.
Im going to make my review very simple. Its a great experience and the wine pairing is definitely worth it. To summarize my experience, I felt so complete after the meal that you dont want to rush through life, but rather take the time to appreciate it. Thanks for the experience.
Do you want to have a great dining experience? This is the place you are looking for. We came motivated by the premium show Pendant time in the kitchen with the desire to try the dishes of chef Simon Mathys that we saw on TV. Ill just tell you, our expectations were exceeded! Our experience started the day before with a call from the chef asking about our allergies. Today we were greeted by a wonderful sommelier who told us the back story of all the wine pairings. Then we met the chef! Eventually! What a humble person! He took the time to explain each dish to us with attention to detail. Normally I will share photos and opinions about the dishes I taste. This time, Ill give you the opportunity to discover for yourself the great experience of eating at Mastard. Thank you everyone for making our anniversary a night to remember!
Very nice experience. Creative and daring cuisine made with local products. The service matches the quality of the food. I recommend with my eyes closed
The cuisine, the flavors, the presentation, the concept, the team, the service, the atmosphere, the chef and his brigade, . Simply wow and rewow!! 10 stars Thank you, we ll be back soon
A great culinary experience!
Best culinary experience of the year 22/23 Impeccable food and wine pairing!
As always a taste bud orgasm. I like to let myself be surprised by carte blanche. A must with food and wine pairing.
So impressed by our meal. It was the culinary highlight of a nearly 2 week vacation. While we would ve preferred to have been at a table, the conversation with the bartender more then made up for that. They were able to accommodate my wife, who s a pescatarian while still allowing me to eat through the planned tasting menu for that evening. The food was beautifully presented, and at times the complexity of flavors were inspired. You MUST make a reservation and should probably do so at least a week in advance. If there s one constructive criticism, it would be with the wine pairing. I am NOT a fan of orange wines and 2 of the 5 courses were paired with them. Yes, they were different but I felt another style or grape would ve been more successful. Merci beaucoup Chef. Vous et votre personnel faites un travail incroyable dont vous devriez tous être fiers. Nous le dirons à nos amis et reviendrons! Vegetarian options: Don t worry, you are in very good hands!
Arrived an hour early for our reservation hoping they could seat us early if there was anything available. Mentioned to hostess if there is a table open earlier please give us a call. Never did of even mentioned about it when I arrive for my reservation 15 minutes early. Was told to order the special mushroom it would be extra on top of our fix menu. Order it and found it salty. After a few more dishes I notice the tables beside us was offered bread on their first course. Quite disappointed that we were not serve with the same calibre. Substitute my meat for fish and found the fish over salty. Everything else is ok. At the end of the meal the server didn t not even both to ask how every was as we were there to celebrate my wife s birthday.
Mastard was one of the restaurants I was very excited to try when I moved to Montreal about a month ago. I brought my partner with me to enjoy this meal on July 28th. We had the menu along with wine pairings. Each dish that came out was exceptional, especially the second course with the corn/cheese pie and scallop, easily one of the best things Ive ever eaten in my life. Being a sommelier and beverage director myself, I was ecstatic to see what would be paired with the food. Natural wine with every course, and perfectly paired too. It was great to also sit across from my partner and see how much she enjoyed all the food and wine as well. The foh and boh staff were all kind and wonderful, and most importantly knew what they were doing. Phenomenal work folks and I look forward to coming back again!
Amazing culinary experience. Flavors explode in your mouth. Wine pairings are perfectly selected and make each dish even better.
Excellent, from start to finish! Blind menu, 5 courses, we took the wine pairing. The dishes were succulent, great discoveries, in a relaxed atmosphere and impeccable service. Dietary restrictions: Take into account allergies and other restrictions (menu adaptation)
This could be 5 stars with a little effort on the service side. Beautiful dishes and beautiful presentation. The flavors and combinations are bold. I really like the approach and the concept of using Quebec products, from the starter to the cocktail. Very cool. The dishes came out at a very good pace and intervals. It was our wedding anniversary and we were looking forward to having a great time. The person serving us was just not interested. For a place of this caliber, the little details can make a big difference, and she missed them: smiling, asking if theres a special occasion, asking about our preferences. At one point my partner asked if she could have a napkin and he replied we dont have one, you can find them in the bathroom. Really bad approach. We kept our cool and didnt let it spoil our evening.
Excellent, refined cuisine, very good wine pairings. Too bad too much noise (for my taste)
Good seasonal food, excellent wine pairing 5 course blind tasting menu Food
Hipster blind tasting menu restaurant Situated in a family neighborhood, this restaurant is now a staple of Rosemont La Petite Patrie. The food is always on point, at a reasonable price (85 $ 5 courses tasting menu). The broccoli first course was absolutely electric. Unique combination of flavors and wonderful texture. 10/10 You can ask for tweeks by saying what you do not eat. Very flexible. Youll Have to book well in advance to have a table on a Thursday or Friday but from monday to Wednesday youll be able to have one on shorter notice.
Very good restaurant! Some dishes better than others but overall excellent. Good quality products. A tasting menu only.
It was stifling, the air conditioning didnt work. The food was very good but nothing innovative.
A marvel all round! What a great gastronomic discovery. Impeccable food and service. Music a little loud and too noisy in general. This would be easy to fix with some acoustic wall tiles. We will go back for the blind menu, fall version!
Creative and delicious dishes using fresh local produce. Feels like I had an elegant, yet humble meal, without breaking the bank. Would definitely come again!
Was the most original restaurant Ive been to in a while. Awesome service from the chef. Very good quality for the price. Will be back!
Its a very nice restaurant. The food was good. The service was just very odd. Dish spacing took forever. We had been there for 90 minutes and had only gone through 3 courses - and theyre not big courses. Our server was just very business - in and out. Just felt like the vibes were off. The kitchen staff that came out to present the food wer awesome.
Unique experience! Impeccable service! Best dinner Ive ever had in my life!
Might be the best restaurant in Montreal currently. Seasonal, creative tasting menus, excellent wine pairings and fantastic service. Ive eaten here 4 times and each time was better than the last.
My wife and I stayed at an AirBnB several blocks away for our anniversary vacation. A bartender at Isle de Garde recommended Mastard for our anniversary dinner. It was perfect. Every dish was superbly crafted. The wine pairings were so unexpected and well selected. The staff was so professional. It was an unbelievable experience.
Amazing. Just Amazing. Everything was perfect, what a dining experience. Thanks to the whole team!
We loved the blind tasting, 5-course food and wine pairing. Wow! (Small group of 4 adults who will all celebrate their 50th birthday this year) Dietary restrictions: They adjusted the menu for our gluten intolerant friend.
I went into this dinner and restaurant with high expectations, and I have to admit that the experience at Mastard hit every note perfectly. Every plate was complex yet accessible, warm hearted, balanced and exciting to the palate. I usually don t choose to go for the wine pairing in restaurants but if there is ever a place to try it, it s here. Great service, great food, great wine.
Perfect experience on every level! Widely recommended
Nothing to say. From the food to the service, everything is exceptional. We also like transparency on the origin and quality of the products. Bravo for also having the courage to only be open during the week in order to give a better quality of life to your employees. And THE BREAD, incredible!
Quite possibly the best restaurant in Montreal
It s THE best gourmet restaurant. Thanks to the entire Mastard team!
Wow. Inventive dishes, with top quality ingredients. Innovative flavour combinations. Service was top-notch. Wine pairings on point.
Well done it was excellent
Most probably the best dinner we have ever had and it wasn t even close. Every bite was Interesting and delicious without being snobby. Very grateful we came here.
Truly a must for experiencing some of the best dishes you ve come across. We were delighted by every course, and the service was above and beyond - great to have the kitchen staff introduce each dish. We also received a mini menu with purveying details and a date stamped cover - neat takeaway.
English follow This meal ranks among the best value for money dining experiences of my entire life. The presentation was careful, and the execution was mastered with remarkable precision. Even the humble Jerusalem artichoke has been sublimated and elevated to the rank of nobility on this plate. The wines, chosen off the beaten track, perfectly accompanied each dish, and the service was both affable and warm. You can clearly see that the team loves what they do, which translates into a calm atmosphere in the kitchen, without any apparent sign of stress. My first visit created a culinary addiction that Im sure Ill feed again, as it certainly wont be my last. One of the best value-for-money meals of my life. Impeccable presentation and masterful execution. Even the humble Jerusalem artichoke has become noble. Wines off the beaten path, yet in perfect harmony with friendly and amicable service. It clearly shows that the team enjoys working together. Moreover, the kitchen is calm, with no apparent stress. I became addicted after my first visit, and it certainly wont be the last.
I dont understand the current rating on Google for this restaurant, particularly regarding the quality/price ratio. Its overrated.
Excellent food and service. Will definitely be going back.
Next level I preferred this restaurant versus other big names in the old MTL. Blind dinner food and wine pairing wow! WoW!
I wanted to love Mastard so much but there are just too many issues. The food is tasty but the timing, portions, attention to detail need to be improved. For instance, we got the wine pairing but our waitperson would consistently pour our wine 15 min before the course it was meant for arrived. By the time food arrived, the 3 oz pour was gone or not at the right temp anymore. Another example: the portions are tiny and spaced with more than 20 min between courses. The same course can arrive at the same table in wildly different sizes. Lastly, the wine pairing consisted of mostly Eastern European wines...about as good as it sounds. Also, just know that looking at the pics of the food, the portions have gotten smaller with time (very similar dishes but with 3 then 2 and now one scallop). Maybe by the time you read this, there wont be any scallops left!?
Excellent food, incredible wine, and by far the best service Ive ever received
A superb experience from A to Z: the dishes were thoughtful, delicate, surprising. The walleye + homemade sausage + pasta service was unforgettable. The wine pairing was perfect - elegant but flirtatious wines that kept us guessing. Attentive and warm service. Not to be missed.
