Excellent evening with very kind and professional staff (despite a long wait upon our arrival). Great holiday atmosphere, the sushi was WOW! But the cod was way overcooked. Otherwise, we recommend, it was really great. Vegetarian options: Apart from fish the rest of the menu was only meat.

In Montreal for vacation and chose Vargas for our dinner the first night. They had just reopened and have a new menu. We shared the ahi tuna tartar, my husband ordered filet with shrimp and scalloped potatoes for his sides and I had the salmon wellington. Every bite was delicious, perfectly cooked and properly seasoned. I wish we had room for dessert. Our server Roberto was great. Highly recommend Vargas!

I came here for a group work dinner. The menu was necessarily restricted, however the steak and frites was excellent, the peppery dauce with it was just right and tbe service was attentive. The atmosphere was good, very noisy but still quiet enough that i could have a conversation without difficulty.

One of the waiters talked down to me like I was street trash. I could have had better sushi at a Metro grocery store. No garlic butter included with the crab legs/lobster tails. The blue light at the bottom of Poseidons Tower hurt my eyes. My girlfriend had a stomach ache afterwards. Overpriced and incredibly pretentious for what it was.

I booked 1 week in advance for my mothers birthday on Thanksgiving Sunday for 9:30 p.m. and I got called at 7:30 p.m. the same day to tell me that the kitchen closes at 9:30 p.m.???? You totally ruined our evening!!! Why accept reservations at 9:30 p.m. in this case??? As soon as I hung up I received a text to say that it was canceled you were quick to cancel but not to notify us lolll Very poor customer service even!!

This will be my one and only time at Vargas, sorry to say. The vibe was nice staff polite but the food was very bland, the tomahawk steak was absolutely disgusting. I have never paid so much for terrible food in my life. If a 160$ steak was that bad then i am afraid to say anything cheaper would be any better.

Upscale restaurant, very clean, good service, good food with beautiful and well-stocked dishes, but noisy room with somewhat loud music, so customers speak loudly. Not suitable for children even if the staff adapts. But we recommend.

Had a nice meal, steak was tasty and sushi was well prepared. Our server, Pascal, was awesome! Very friendly, great recommendations, and just a really cool guy. The restaurant is undergoing renovations to make it look more modern, which will help with the atmosphere. All in all, we had a great time and the food was very good.

This is my second time visiting here. The first time, we had a less than stellar experience as one of our partys streak was first under cooked, then over cooked. While they did take it off the bill, it was disappointing. This visit, however, they knocked it out of the park! All of our steaks were perfectly cooked. The sides were absolutely delicious. The wine selection was huge. Our server was extremely attentive but not intrusive. One of our party ordered the sushi platter and it looked incredible. He said that it was delicious as well.

Roberto made us laugh all evening. A very good, extraordinary server. Thank you for your excellent service.

The porterhouse was outstanding!

Very ordinary. Servers made multiple mistakes. The cauliflower steak is unevenly cooked, some parts were hard. Not worth.

The menu is dated. On the steak side, its exactly what you would have gotten at any steakhouse 25 years ago. I had a Kansas cut, which was flavorful. The sides were a bit sad: the toppings on the Monte Carlo mashed potatoes were not generous, and the veggies were uninspired. On the sushi side its competent but unimaginative. You can easily find much better elsewhere. The service was friendly but there were a few small mistakes (I had to ask for a steak knife, they left an empty wine glass on the table, etc). They are currently renovating part of the place, perhaps this will be the occasion for them to revamp things a bit? It would be nice for Montreal to have a truly innovative and upscale steakhouse.

Reserved a table for a party of 4, upon arrival he maîtresses d seemed oddly unwelcoming but we were quickly seated. Waiter was attentive/prompt but he mumbled and was very hard to hear and understand at times. Though the support staff and floor manager were very helpful. Food was amazing! My partner and I both got tenderloin and shared three side, which were all fantastic. Our friend got the salmon, which was very generous and grilled to perfection, and the prime rib... They didnt describe it much as they were too keen on devouring it. Everything was perfect! Beautifully prepared and very generous proportions.

Very good restaurant only small criticism depending on the waiter or waitress it can be disappointing but the food is great.

Best experience had the lamb made to perfection

The food and service by our server was excellent. The lamb chops I had were probably the best I ve ever had. The others at the table had the filet mignonette, the Salmon, the tiger shrimp and it was all cooked perfectly and served hot. The Orange Roughy was not available, but not their fault. The only misgiving is the difficult parking and traffic, also not their fault. But I recommend Vargas without hesitation.

To be honest, best steak aged 90 days in my life, perfect cooking. The sushi was very fresh, really recommended. The cons now: beef tartare way too spicy, mediocre pepper sauce, really disappointing for a steak house, way too reduced, way too much pepper, I dont think there was crème fraiche or cognac. A discussion with the boss is necessary. One more star for the owners response

Very nice, quite chic restaurant with impeccable service, the meal was delicious, I had a delicious prime rib of beef au jus with a starter of marrow on the bone and a spicy fries and a beer, all for $105, its worth it, I recommend

Mixed emotion here. Service was attentive and professional. Onion soup best ever had. Tuna tenaki very good. Prime rib good. Pasta made on request for my son good. Both my ribeye and daughter s steak frites came out well done when we asked for medium rare. How you burn a steak at a steakhouse! At least they did correct it without arguing.

Was here on Saturday, F1 night. Had an absolute garbage dinner at The Keg the previous night (only place to get a seat unfortunately) The great experience I had at Vargus was due to the bar staff: Joanne and the blond girl (I apologize but I didnt get her name) These 2 girls are the most outgoing, qualified, personable bartenders /hostesses I have ever been around. Friendly from the initial hello, great to chat with about things while still servicing the busy bar and service area. Smiles the whole time and it was crazy busy. Two of the most genuine people I have interacted with in a very long time. Im from Ottawa and I would come up for a night just to have dinner because of these 2 girls. I was with a buddy, in for the weekend, and we had a great time. Steak and sushi were fantastic as well. Great place to have dinner for sure and I will be back. Thanks to everyone for the great experience :)

I went to Vargas yesterday because I wanted to eat a good steak and Vargas is a steakhouse.I ordered an 22 oz steak but I was very, very disappointed the steak didn t have any flavour and more he was burnt on side. When you pay 70$ you expect to eat a good quality meat and cooked by a chef or someone who is a professional. Very disappointed, I was really wanted to eat a good steak.

Service was impeccable

Worst restaurant experience I ever had. I had filet mignon steak, lobster mash and a big glass of pinot gris (the steak doesn t come with a side, you pay for it separately). The server was rude and not great at communication , I was asking him to advise wine options and he wasn t helpful. I then chose the wine and he didn t even let me taste it first, he just brought it in a glass which other restaurants never do that even if you are ordering a glass not a bottle. He also put the 20% tip himself on the machine without passing the machine first to choose. I didn t finish my plate of food, and I couldn t sleep at night from extreme stomach pain and I am not sure if it was the food or the wine that went bad. I have been to so many Montreal restaurants, both the high end and casual, and never ever had such experience

Reserved the place for two friends and I for a bachelors dinner. Not busy at all on a Sunday considering its the long weekend. Ordered two platters of sushi accidentally but didnt regret it, a Porterhouse with fillet mignon. Food was absolutely phenomenal and the service was impeccable. Recommend this place 10/10

Bref,bien pour passer un bon moment au centre ville en toute simplicité avec de belles vues sur la rue .On peut relaxer et manger dans un bel endroit. Il y a du personnel, chose rare et pas dattente. 3rd time at Vargas, probably the last. I received better service when I spent between $200 and $300 instead of $600 to $700. The quality of the food is always there, but if customer service matters to you and you are not a regular avoid this place. Having been to Farside, Deville, Mirellas or even Rib&Reef we would have been better served than here. Go where your money is appreciated. Point blank. At least my dog will have some good leftover bone marrow to enjoy as a snack.

Horrible service steak cooked wrong, completely forgot sides, lamb had zero flavour and just got an, oops I forgot your side sorry , bill comes and spending over $1000 you think they did anything!? nothing, and when asked no we made you new steak . yes they did but the entire table was done eating and someone had to eat alone! Horrible, would never recommend... and to your reply, it was brought up and no one cared to do anything... they just wanted payment. But why should anyone have to mention anyway when you made someone eat alone because dinners where no prepared properly, and forgotten completely!

We dived in here during the heavy snow earlier this week, cold and wet. We were met with excellent friendly service. Burgers, steak and veggie option were great and the wine list was excellent. Probably the best food we ve had all week on our vacation in Montreal (much better than Keg!).

Absolute worst food poisoning of my life. Went last Sunday as part of a bachelor party and 5 days later Im still sick from the shrimp.

Sebastian made our night. we went out for a bachelorette and he was so much fun, knowledgeable about the menu and had many great recommendations. We are not even from montreal and would definitely make the trip out again just for him !

We are at this restaurant yesterday and had an amazing time. The food was amazing. The waiter Sebastian was very good in making our stay comfortable. Even though he is not really sincere in looking after us, but he made our stay worth it. You can tell that he is trying his best to make us comfortable but I know he is only doing his job. But the sincerity is not really there. Pushing us to buy expensive food not letting us decide want we wanted. I think he is thinking we have no money to spend, but we proved him wrong. The Manager trying hard to accommodate us and trying to talk to us, maybe sizing us up if we have Mon to pay. Really a very weird feeling. First time here at this restaurant last night. We were hungry and new to the area, we had no choice but to eat here. The welcome that we received was very disappointing but we stood our grounds to stay. The two Ladies at front was so rude and prejudice. Looking at us with disgust because we are Asian and not formally dress because we are on vacation. The way she asked the question if we have reservation is totally rude. If I want to hang up my coat in the coat cart was totally rude. We were thinking of leaving but we stood grounds to show them. The looks that we received are not pleasant. But at the end Sebastian tried really hard to make us comfortable. You can really tell that sincerity of every one was not there. I find this restaurant full of prejudice people. From the Manager , the hostess and waiter. So if you are Asian or miniority looking make sure you dress up going to this restaurant so they don t look at you weird. Now I know why people not liking Montreal. Very disappointed in treating us. Not a real welcomeing place if you ask me. Medy

The food was disgusting.ordered a VIP platter to share with friends and for 64$.. it was nooot worth it at all. I could have gotten the party pack at M&Ms for 20$ the drink was good tho. This place used to be so good! The waiters seem annoyed as hell like it hurts to smile. Blah. Never again.

Can t believe I had never been before my husband brought me here for Valentine s Day and what a great meal it was! We ordered: shrimp tempura, beef satay, cap steak, roast beef, grilled mushrooms, fries, and baked potato. My water glass was never empty, the service was excellent overall. While I didn t like the peanut sauce with the satay, the meat was super tender and flavourful on its own, and we were happy the sauce was on the side. The mushrooms were insanely delicious as was my cap steak, the roast beef was good, just nowhere near as good as my steak looking forward to our next visit!

Its no longer the vergas of other times, the Burger of the month is no longer offered on Friday, the host table is no longer offered on Friday, in the past the restaurant was almost full at midday. The most surprising thing about the menu is that the 8oz filet mignon costs more than $40 and we have to add $$$$$$ for the accompaniments (potato,...etc). The Vergas restaurant was one of my best restaurants in Montreal... too bad The service was terrible.

The food and service (thanks to Tamara) were impeccable. I would put this exceptional experience on the same level as a 4 diamond Castel & Resorts. Went to dinner with my girlfriend last night and everything was fantastic. We were served by a waiter named Roberto and he was impeccable. Would recommend and will definitely be returning.

Food - their Lamb shanks, BBQ ribs, salmon plate are great. Tried their sushi for the first time, not bad at all. Onion soup is delicious with the old gruyere cheese. Cesar salad never disappoints. Their portion size varies from one dish to another. Service- nothing to complain about. Always good. Atmosphere- if you want a quiter ambience, do not sit near the bar. Otherwise, the ambience is great.

We were overloaded. The restaurant admitted this and refused to refund us! We held our Christmas party at Vargas last December. Vargas does not include dessert in its group menu and this remains your choice. So we pay for it if we only take it. Since we were a large group (> 50 people) we asked the restaurant if they would like to have a list of names with meal choices and dessert option as well as name tags that guests can put in front of them to facilitate serving during dinner. The restaurant told us that this was not necessary and that their team was used to hosting large groups. Although I had clarified, by email, to the reservations manager that only some of the guests were going to have dessert, dessert was served to the entire group (55 people instead of 38) without the servers asking to know. who wanted it and who didnt. Returned to the bill, we were billed for the excess desserts and despite the explanations I gave to the waiter, that the dessert was of your choice and that not all of the group wanted it, he did not did not want to remove excess desserts from the bill on the pretext that it was difficult to question everyone as to which guests wanted dessert. However, the waiters had stopped by at the beginning of the evening to question the guests about their meal choices and could have questioned them about the dessert option at the same time... When I mentioned to the reservations manager that we had been overcharged, she admitted: After checking your invoice, we notice that you were indeed charged for the excess desserts. but she claimed that we paid less than 15% tip and that the restaurant was going to keep the overcharged amount for this reason! It should be noted that we had left 15% after taxes on the meal costs but that we had excluded the room rental costs from the tip, which is completely normal. So, basically, a restaurant that refuses our proposed list of names to facilitate the service and ensure its fluidity, makes mistakes by serving unsolicited desserts and charges them and forces us to pay for them!

Wonderful unforgettable moments very beautiful and excellent service

This place is perfect for business lunches, if you care more about the business part than the lunch part. The food quality has absolutely dropped here, its tasteless and stale for most of the menu. The place is lovely and well lit though, no blasting music, seats are comfortable, tables arent the perfect size to have a conversation with someone across from you.

Had a romantic dinner at Vargas for Valentine s Day! We had a great experience overall and the mood was well set for the occasion. We really enjoyed the calamari appetizer. The prime rib au jus was good, as well as the lamb shank. My lychee martini was alright. Our waitress was kind & attentive and we had a beautiful evening.

The steak was very good, the sushi ok but not wow Received our starter and bread after the main meal when we ask to keep our meal to take away the waiter threw away our steak and the sushi was crushed in the box There were a lot of small errors for the price we paid it was good but disappointed

We were there for my birthday, we had Sébastien and Alex as waiters and Miro and Christian (I believe) as our managers. We were a group of 20 that ate and drank alot . Not one time did we look for service it was always there and the managers both always were checking the table. Was an amazing birthday party thanks to all your amazing staff. Expected a top-notch resto, overall needs a bit of a face lift. Our waitress was nice, service was good. The steaks were good quality however not received at the desired level of cooking. Being formally in the wine business, the by the wine glass offering is sad :( To enjoy a quality steak paired with the lowest quality wines (i.e. grocery store level) was very disappointing.

The food was pretty good. However, the coffee is so bitter that I cant drink it. Very old and not fresh taste. My friend and I took a sip and stood up. And one of the servers, Old Woman, had a very stiff attitude, which was unpleasant. I think people like that shouldnt work as servers.

If we didnt order the sushi( which was excellent ) the meal would have been a total disaster. Too many other great restaurants in Montreal. Wouldnt return

Steak was really good , I really enjoyed its taste

The salmon was cooked well and was delicious. Side of garlic mashed potatoes was also very good, and a pretty large serving. Side of cauliflower was also very good. My cocktail was also delicious. Service was good, not as great as I would have expected it to be. I ordered a Captain Morgan and Diet Coke and the waiter asked me multiple times what kind of spiced rum I wanted, after repeating that I wanted Captain Morgan. It was not a language barrier either. The biggest disappointment was the Prime Rib Au Jus. It was SO overly salty. I ordered it medium rare, and it came out first in our order, the underside was cooked much more than the top side and must have sat on a hot plate waiting for the rest of the order to come out to the table. I couldn t even eat half of it because it was so tough, I couldn t even cut through much of the steak with a steak knife. Very disappointing as I was really looking forward to an amazing tender steak. When I told the waiter about my disappointment in the steak, he didn t say anything! Not even an apology or an offer to get me something else to eat or to take a little bit of the cost off of the check. Just . Silence. I left more than half my meal on the table, and I always take home leftovers. I agree with a lot of the reviews. Some things are amazing and others just a disappointment.

Service from Pascal was great. Food overall was really good, as well as the cocktails. The atmosphere for new years was stunning. A bit disappointed with the fillet mignon, it was a bit bland and it was difficult to finish. However, the desserts were amazing. The cocktails did take a while for them to arrive at the table. But despite that, the evening was amazing.

Positive points: - Good service. - Quiet room. - Warm atmosphere. - Tender meat. - Good entry. Negative points: - The cooking of the tomahawk was not uniform. - The truffle fries and grilled mushrooms were extremely salty. - slight feeling of discomfort at the table where we were (next to the curtain wall, it was a little cold). - The water in the sinks is cold, the mixer setting should be reviewed).

Ordered the oysters and tuna tartare to start. Food was freshly prepared and tasty. The filet was cooked perfectly but the burger was overcooked even after asking for medium. Two sections to this restaurant. Unfortunately they sat us in the largest dining area with no other table. I wont be going back. Based on the atmosphere, it determined what we ordered. Horrible experience.

What a huge dissapointment. We had to ask 3 times for bread (ended up getting it as a dessert after the main courses were finished). Had to BEG the waitress for WATER ANOTHER 3 TIMES. The food itself was a huge let down. Could have made steak myself from IGA for 10$ and the quality would have been better. Paid 10$ for 3 pieces of asparagus. This place used to be amazing before covid. Looks like they got their staff from the garbage bin in back of a Walmart. The cooks were bad, the waitress was worse. Avoid this place like the plague.

I ordered a steak and Monte Carlo potatoes for lunch and the steak tasted as if it was cooked and reheated for way too long. Medium cooked steak should never taste dry, terribly cooked. The best thing was the gravy, it tasted homemade and was the highlight of what I ate. I would try something different next time, maybe an off day for the chef when we went, but my expectations wont be very high.

I had a 90 day dry aged rib eye, it was cooked perfect. I had the bone marrow and whisky sauce to dip and it was delicious

The steak was amazing. Rib eye fry aged 28 days to perfection. The sushi on the other hand was lacking, and probably not even on par with your typical all you can eat joint. The service was great, but it seemed like a restaurant made more for business meetings than to celebrate special occasions. Overall, if you are looking for great cocktails and steaks, would recommend.

Vargas is not what it used to be! Drinks are whatever, the food is not what it used to be. Food used to be so delicious and tasty now it s not the case. Very disappointed specially for the price it cost. The french onion soup was too cheesy and did not taste good.

I had my first face-to-face experience at the Vargas restaurant today. Above all and a priori, using the Open Table tool, reservations for managers become easy. About my (lunch) experience today: *Warm and attentive welcome and service *Excellent meal *Fresh and still warm bread - which reminds me of the homemade bread made by my mother *The most trippy: a steakhouse which offers a multitude of meals for all tastes and lifestyles (flexitarian diet). For example, on the table dhôte, there was a divine vegan option. In addition, vegetarians (who dont eat red meat) will also find what theyre looking for thanks to the following dishes: fish of the day and salad with chicken breast. *In a few words, a diversified menu, adapted to a heterogeneous clientele, with different tastes and needs. *Bottom line: fresh and delicious food, in the heart of downtown MTL, easily accessible by public transportation. A big thank you to Yoan, for the excellent service at our table!

Everything was great. My only issue is the waiter forgot my drink a few times. Eventually I got it. Food was great, place was good.

What do you get when an upscale, oldschool steakhouse specializing in surf n turf tries to cater to an increasingly diverse, health-conscious clientele? A group menu of gravy-drenched meat and unoriginal sushi, with sides of iceberg salad, bland vegetables, tastes-likes-its-from-a-can tomato soup and plain mashed potatoes, garnished with an oh-so-elevated sprig of parsley. Would I have come here on my own? No. Im clearly not this restaurants target demographic. Do I appreciate the effort they made to include vegan and vegetarian options on their group menu, like breaded cauliflower? Absolutely. Did I imagine the chefs in the kitchen exclaiming oh God, we have to include vegetables in desperation? Many times. Did my meal remind me of sad wedding venue or cafeteria food? Yes. But if youre planning a group dinner, it sure as heck beats a steak-only menu. Plus theres lots of seating, and service is quick and efficient, so youll be back at the office in under 2 hours.

Food is very good. A steak house with amazing sushi.

It is situated in the heart of Montreals downtown area, making it convenient for both locals and tourists. It is primarily known for its high-quality steaks, but due to dietary restrictions and considering its an official dinner, I preferred Chilean Sea Bass which was OK-ish. Their Ceasar Salad was excellent and fresh. The restaurant is known for its elegant and stylish ambiance. It features modern décor, ambient lighting, and a chic atmosphere, making it suitable for business meetings. Their service was how ever very slow which they need to improve.

Had a wonderful dinner with 10 friends - Berta was our service and took amazing care of us. Great advice on what to order. Shared Tender Kamikaze and additional order of sushi tempura just perfect amount for me. Portions are large. Steak was tender. Sushi was good. Friend had French onion soup. Next time hope to try deserts!

Everything good except they dont know how to make espresso and serve it in a coffee mug

Really disappointed with my experience at Vargas. Very slow service and without any character, tasteless food. I had the Vargas burger. It was dry, without sauce and came with cold fries for $30(!!!). My friends also all had different dishes and it was mediocre. Pass your turn!

We were celebrating our anniversary and made reservations to eat here. Some of the low ratings concerned me however I dont see the merit in them? The food was fantastic! I ordered the Ribeye and my wife ordered the kamikaze. Also got a side of mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Everything was perfect, steak was cooked to perfection and the sushi was very high quality. Service was not slow at all (and the place was packed when we went). Not sure of the negative reviews but I had a great experience. Will return when we visit Montreal again!

Located near the Montreal train station and in the city center, it offers steak specialties! The quality of the beef is good. Except for the medium-rare steak, the other steaks have a very special cooking method! The beef soaked in the sauce is very special but not unpalatable! The salads are fresh and the desserts are delicious! The service is also very good!

We order online today from Vargas for 3 people (168$) and portions of food were extremely tiny, we are still starving....We got for ex 6 asparagus for 10 $ ... desert was so small it as ridiculous.

Disappointing steak... which in a steakhouse is really surprising and unfortunate. A filet should not be so dry unless cooked improperly. There are much better steakhouses in Montreal, I would recommend giving this one a pass.

Large menu selection and affable wait staff make for a nice eating experience. That said, the seating area can get loud - even if only half full of patrons - which can make it challenging to hear conversations at your own table.

Really great atmosphere, the servers were nice albeit slow at times but it seemed like they werent in a rush to chase the party out. Now about the food - The best sushi ever made ever in the history of sushis and I am not even a sushi lover. So if the sushi was that good I can only imagine what the rest of the menu tasted like. Can get a bit pricey pretty quick but then youre paying for absolute quality

I brought an associate from out of town to Vargas not too long ago, as Ive been several times before and always had a great experience. We requested to sit at the bar and ordered an assortment of appetizers, including, the shrimp cocktail, shrimp tempura, grilled angus beef satays and the tuna tartare, as well as, several delicious cocktails. The shrimp tempura was notably very delicious, but everything else was still very good; the food has never disappointed. The only downfall of this particular visit was the atmosphere on this specific night. Someone who looked to be either the manager or possibly a supervisor seemed to be hovering around the bar area, staring at the customers sitting at the bar for prolonged periods of time. As someone who has been there before, it felt very odd, and for my friend who had never been before, he felt very uncomfortable as a result of this individuals actions. It was a little disappointing and led us to cut our time shorter than we wouldve liked because we didnt feel very welcome. The bartenders that night were phenomenal and made one of the best espresso martinis ive had in a while (would recommend) Johanne and Cris were extremely kind and made our experience notably better. We loved talking to them and spending the night with them at the bar, excellent service! Overall, will be returning, as the restaurant is normally wonderful in all aspects, but this particular evening was a little bit disappointing.

Impressive 5-star staff, a top-notch ambiance, and a perfect fillet mignon stole the show at our office party. However, the dessert left much to be desired, and the Caesar salad was disappointingly simplistic. Overall, a mixed experience with room for improvement in the culinary department.

Mid food Streak frite was expensive for what you re getting ,the fries are soggy but the meat is okay. The calamaries are tasteless and the batter crumble as soon as you touch it Sushis are fresh but again expensive (50 for 20 pieces) The apple cheese cake was old and it s graham base soggy. The Ferrero chocolate cake was absolutely tasteless
