Chess’s….what happens to you? The portion was very small and it was horrible. We had the 4 piece fish and chips with gravy and drink for $29.99. The fish was frozen for about 2-3 years I suspect. Absolutely awful. And what’s up with the portion size. I guess it’s the end of an era for me I’m afraid. There are so many other options for F&C.
Was in St. John’s from Alberta to deal with. Saw this place in TikTok and wanted to make sure I stopped in. It was better than what was in TikTok. Order a one piece Fish and chips. Could not finish everything. The staff were very friendly and chatted for a bit. I would recommend this location to anyone. Very happy and want to thank everyone.

St. John's based chain restaurant. Excellent staff who took care of me even when it's a fast food style place. Fish is fresh. Make sure to eat it with salt and vinegar 😀
Great spot for the classic food you know fish and chips they are so famous for says it right in the name 😋. Fries and cooked Great no soggy ones here . The staff are really friendly and wants to get their 40 hours of work instead of giving t0 sponsored people's thanks to the government. Time get given fair working hours right cause it's only the rigjt thing to do. Anyway I can go on about that but I won't. Cheers and don't work to hard now sweating in that kitchen skipper by . My first time at Ches's was a few weeks ago, visiting from Halifax NS. I absolutely loved it. Food and staff was fabulous. Compare to eating out in Halifax, the prices were very cheap. Thank you.
Today I decided to give Ches' Mt. Pearl one more chance, since my last visit was very dissappointing and after phoning in the order, I still had to wait 15 minutes. I ordered two 2 piece fish and chips and was disgusted with what was on the plate. Two pieces of fried batter, about 5 inches long and 2 inches wide with a small piece of fish in the center smaller than a cod nugget. It was tasteless like it never saw the salt shaker. The clerk was indiffernant and the words please and thank you were not uttered. To think this service only cost me $ 39.08 ( basicly it was for two french fries ). This was their last chance. I will never be going there again. Fool me once............
Poor customer service. I called at 5:30, ordered a single piece of fish and chips, was told my order would be ready in 20 minutes. I showed up to get it, 20 minutes later and continued to wait another 25 minutes in the restaurant for my order. It was not only me who was clearly annoyed. Other people were having issues with their orders and missing items. The whole place was chaotic and very unprofessional. My food wasn't even hot, and it was barely a handful of fries. I would not recommend this Ches's at all. Beyond disappointing.

A fan favorite. Less one star just because food can inconsistent depending on the cook. Gravy spills sometimes if you have takeout. Be sure to always check lid is in place properly.

Wasnt impressed I stopped going too all of ches,s restaurants had 3 piece fish and chips gravy and dressing on the side fish was has I remembered greasy not many fries and only half tub gravy but full tub dressing 28 something not very good but hot anyway all end pieces of fish batter.

Todat my husband and I went in to grab a slice of pizza and we had the worst service I have ever had in a place!! I most certainly will never go back to that place I think the lady in the front needs some customer service training or to be fired

Called topsail road...no one answered after several call attempts. So decided Id go to mount pearl location. Placed my order told it would be 25 min. Showed up at the correct time and was told another 20-25 min. They were clearly really backed up but continued to take orders instead if fulfilling the ones they had. Its been a half hour and Im still waiting. 55 min after I place my order....yet ppl walking off the street and placing an order they are telling them half hr. Never again.

Was frustrating with zero enforcement on person count allowance especially with delivery drivers occupying the space. Restaurant is unsuitable to enter unless you disregard signs. The food is worth 6 stars, though. *chef kiss*
Always tasty, Im hooked!
Dont know if it was my taste buds, or maybe they really did change something, but the past few years the fish has tasted far saltier, to the point of making it unpleasant. For being a more out of the way smaller restaurant chain, its respectable, the mood of this particular restaurant is cramped and lacking compared to the other ones, just a couple chairs and tables strewn about, and its not in a convenient spot. the fries are okay enough to pardon some of it.

Beyond disappointed with the service I received here this evening. Called from 6:15 to when I walked into the door there at 6:40 and no answer. I always order ahead of time as I know they close at 7 and I hate being that person that walks in last minute. Much to my surprise, when I walked in, the phone was off the hook and sitting on the counter. Obviously they didn t want more people coming in or calling. Too bad. You close at 7. That means you lock the doors at 7. You take calls and orders until 7! I guess this is my karma for going somewhere other than the kenmount road location.

Cant order delivery by phone, was told to use Skip the dishes, or Door Dash, tried using both and their network timeout 3 times for Door Dash, and 2 times for skip the dishes, so Chess how do you get home delivery from you guys, please explain, NL company using out of province delivery system, very disappointed, can believe this, as if it matters to them but I will never go to their restaurant again and well cant order takeout do to poor delivery service

Always good for a feed of deep fried fish & chips... But dont underestimate their fried chicken either. Its better than the other fried chicken places.

I waited 35 mins for the meal and was the only customer in the dining while the skip the dishes came and went. ordered 2 med chip and chips with gravy and the order came to $47.00. The young girl was friendly but way too expensive and way to long of a wait on a Sunday afternoon

Food is great but you have to order via Skip The Dishes if you want delivery and its more expensive (menu prices) than ordering direct and pick it up. Food is not crispy due to plastic containers they use. Best to dine in or pick up yourself.

I went there for my free birthday meal as i have done at the one i used to go to on a regular basis on freshwater road. I was turned down and told i had to buy a meal to get me what would then be not so free meal... i am a single individual i dont have friends out hear in mt pearl who am i gonna buy a meal for.. they told me i can eat the one i buy and take my birthday meal home..cause i love soggy fries(sarcasm) i left the place literally in tears and am never going back to the mt pearl location.

Store was near and tidy as was the bathroom. Staff was friendly which made the experience that much nicer. And, as per usual, the food was terrific.
Quick service. Food was delicious, hot and exactly as ordered. Quiet location and good parking available. I had cod bites, fries, dressing and gravy, all very good!
It wasnt as good as I remember it. The restaurant itself is very basic, they even keep their stock out front, so nothing to get excited about. But the fish was disappointing - I would guess it was frozen. Too bad given I had fond memories of this place from years ago.

I have to give it 4 stars only because there was a hair in my food me the reason why Im giving it 4 would be from their excellent service and reaction to the hair and it was great.
Chess has gone downhill over the past few years. Its been very hit or miss lately, with the batter being too thick having an almost gooey texture. The fries have been soggy more often than not as well. Though when everything is cooked right, its really good.
A must-have classic in Newfoundland. Chess fish and chips for authenticity and freshness!
