Smokin' George's BBQ Restaurant in Nanaimo

Uh, what happened?.. I have been coming here for while and this was the first time Ive been disappointed. The pulled pork sandwich was dry and full of chunks of hard fat. I really hope this isnt the new norm.

Ordered my food at the till, chose my seat, and within minutes it was in front of me. Brisket, fries, and beans. So hungry, so tasty. The bbq sauce was very vinegary to my taste, though not overwhelming. Thats more my personal preference which doesnt mean that it isnt still tasty. I have a feeling that if you like the sour part of sweet and sour pork when looking for your favourite chinese takeout, then you would thoroughly enjoy this bbq sauce. (No, it doesnt taste like sweet and sour pork, it tastes like bbq sauce). The cornbread probably had some gluten so I got fries as the side instead. The fries were delightfully crispy (I can see why the poutine would be a favourite for many). The beans were really good too. ... I completely forgot about the coleslaw 0_0 The staff were very friendly and quick to help explain what to expect or what to do if you walk in looking a bit confused (thats me!). The overall atmosphere was good. Music that I havent heard playing everywhere else and not too loud, and some interesting wall art that fit right in.

Was able to confirm this once great establishment changed hands. The food was absolutely horrible. Spray bottle and rag on the table.- surroundings shabby.

Super tasty food thats affordable. Bbq pork stuffed tots were stellar. Mary also provided excellent and friendly service. Bonus that there is even a yummy roast veggie salad if youre bringing a vegetarian friend. Will definitely be back when I visit Nanaimo again. Vegetarian options: Roast veggie salad was tasty!

They saved us during a power outage when we were in town for a medical appointment and staying at a motel Fed us even though they were ready to lock up It was a stressful time for us so we really appreciated their kindness and also loved the food!

it was the worst bbq I v ever eaten, the only great thing was the fries. The meat was tasteless. I am not from here, but will not be back for this bbq. And the prices was not high.

Haven t ordered from Smokin George s in a while, since new ownership has taken over. Extremely disappointed in the very small portions for the price. I ordered a combo plate and was pretty decent.

My wife loves this place. I thought it was pretty good. Food Well prepared, and diverse. Comes with beans and coleslaw Service None/not needed Atmosphere Tables and a large kitchen Random oddity You pay (and tip based on the service) before receiving any service or your food.

The quality of the food was great! Although quite pricey. And if asking for a tip after the meal the service should be full service. If I have to stand and order or get my own drink, the tips will reflect that fact.

Only my second time being here. Had lunch with a couple friends. The pulled pork poutine was insane. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for with quantity and quality. I will definitely be back!

Stopped by here for lunch this afternoon, expecting a delicious bbq lunch with my partner. We got the bbq combo. My partner got the ribs and brisket with beans, fries and coleslaw. I got the smoked chicken with beans, fries, and cornbread. We were told to pick a table of our choice. We had to pay for the food before we even got the food and additionally tip before witnessing any service, which is odd. The ambience was okay. We had to grab our own water from the plastic glasses next to the filter, which is fine but the glasses did not smell clean. The food showed up in under 5 mins of sitting at the table. I don t mind waiting for my food as long as it s good but when food shows up early, I was questioning the quality of the food. My partner found 4 pieces of hair in his food. 3 from the brisket and 1 from the fries. My partner excused the first hair he found from the brisket. But then he found another two and the fourth one that he found from the fries looked like dog hair. The ribs were tough and dry and did not have a nice smokey flavour. The smoke tasted like burnt rubber or chemicals. There was very little sauce on the ribs with little flavour and no char marks. The beans were decent but not groundbreaking, almost tasted like the chilli from Tim Hortons. The fries were served in a steel cup and the brisket and ribs were served in a plastic bowl with paper on it when it should have been the other way around. This is because the sauce ripped the paper in the bowl and the steel cup made the fries soggy. The smoked chicken was anything but smoked. It was served with white Alabama sauce. There was no flavour to the sauce. The flavours had only one tone to them and it was FLAT!! The chicken was on the dry side for sure. And definitely could use more salt and pepper. Same goes for the brisket. The brisket was surprisingly tender and somewhat juicy, could ve been more juicy. They mentioned in the beginning that the bbq used was their own in-house bbq sauce. It was BLAND and bitter and tasted of malt vinegar. There was nothing smoked about it and lacked flavour. I was also expecting the brisket to be somewhat pink looking on the inside but it did not have an appetising colour and was grey. The fries could ve been more salty. Ps: the only saving grace was probably the cornbread. It was sweet and somewhat moist and was a lot better than everything we ate but was served cold. Overall, my experience was extremely poor. I don t understand how people were generous enough to give this place a good rating. I was utterly disappointed and I hope they make the necessary changes. Even if the food was off putting, the hair on the food is just unforgivable.

Great food and great staff. Missed a couple things on our order but when brought up, that was quickly corrected. All in all, a fantastic bite to eat, with solid portion sizes and a fair price too. Vegetarian options: There was a salad at the bottom of the menu that was vegetarian, I believe Parking: The place was somewhat busy yet there were still more than enough parking spaces available, even if the restaurant was full. Had only tried the pulled pork sandwich, beef brisket, and poutine until today. Decided to order a ham and cheese and was blown away by how delicious and satiating it was. Thick-cut maple smoked ham, smoked mayo, and instead of using thin cheese slices a couple of crispy mozza sticks packed with cheese. Great staff too.

The BEST mac an cheese ive EVER had! Great service and happy environment. 10/10 for BBQ food. Would recommend!

Stopped in here for lunch while visiting the city. The staff were very friendly and warm. The fries were phenomenal. The brisket, however, was just okay. It was a little bland and tough. The locals I was with love the food, so perhaps it was just an off day.

What a great restaurant!

I was disappointed that the Take-Out or Eat-In menus do not have Smoked Meat or Smoked Chicken sold by the pound. Because no one in BC knows how to make rye bread, I have mine shipped in from Montreal. I have not eaten here but, to post my information, I had to post a star regardless. How ridiculous ! My low score should not be a reflection of their Food-Service or Atmosphere.

We go out of our way to eat here whenever we are remotely close to Nanaimo, and it is ALWAYS well worth it the trip! Kid-friendliness: Kids get crayons and coloring sheets, and they are made just as welcome as the adults!

Have probably dropped 20 grand here since the restaurant opened. After George left, we were worried about a quality drop. It has been 100 percent bang on until today. The wings were overcooked and dry, with less of the standard smokey flavour. The cookies were raw in the middle. Gravy was thick and flavourless, and the fries were all the bits. I wouldnt have left a review, but nobody came to ask how are meal was, and nobody said goodbye when we left. ( Only 3 customers at that time ) This is not normally how this restaurant is run, and we recognize the staff turnover issue, but pumping out this sub par quality, paying close to $50 with tip for wings, well, if its the same on our next visit, perhaps we will re think our restaurant default. I have left 5 star reviews here for years, and it has been every single time for me, until today.

Food is incredible. Brisket is the best I ve ever had. Ribs are so tender and juicy. Sides are delicious. The whole vibe id really cool too. Definitely a must try if you want good authentic bbq.

Always great good, always great friendly staff

First time there, and probably the last. The Ribs tasted like chemicals and the Nanaimo Bar had a hard and crunchy base. My wife and i both felt sick after eating. Maybe some people like it that way, but not us. I contacted them to inform them about our meal, for quality control reasons, and they basically said sorry you didnt like it, let us know next time and we will make sure its good. Are they going to taste it first? Not sure.

Best place in Nanaimo for everything pulled pork and fresh tasty cornbread (fluffy with real corn) made daily. Friendly staff and a tastful jazz seating area from the wall decore to the music playing.

I m a bbq junkie and have eaten it all over North America. Favourite style is Texas, especially beef ribs. I love what these guys do, and i love the hustle and passion that s evident when you watch them get through a busy evening service. But I definitely feel that for the commitment and dedication they have, the meat needs to be better. Last night was my 4th or 5th time ordering, and we got the dinner for 4. Cornbread, fries, and slaw were on point. Pulled pork was good. Ribs were tender, but lacked smoke flavour. It s almost like they re baked then given a quick hour in a smoker near the end (or vice versa). Made me wonder what kind of smoke they re using; maybe mesquite? Which isn t a great match for side ribs. Brisket was very tough, which was foreshadowed by the guy sawing at it after he d pulled our piece out of some kind of plastic (never seen brisket held in plastic before; usually butcher paper). Sausage was very dry and cut into little pieces. Chicken was just odd i m a big fan of Alabama bbq sauce, and make it myself at home. The sauce is great, but the chicken itself seemed to be pulled pieces from a thigh? Zero white meat. Had noticeable tendon. Nobody in the family enjoyed it. I ll keep supporting because they re Nanaimo s only bbq joint, but I hope they re genuinely comparing themselves to the best southern bbq and figuring out how to close the gaps. Tough brisket should never leave the restaurant.

The lady who takes orders is extremely kind and friendly! I always enjoy interacting with her, and the food of course is next level. Even as a vegetarian, this is one of my favorite restaurants! My personal faves: Deep fried mozzarella sticks Mac and cheese Cornbread Brownies

The best Nanaimo bar! Smokin Georges BBQ Feast is a good option for 3 people, not as hungry as they say. If you are a male young people, maybe this is not enough. It is delicious!

EDIT: I have been sicker than a dog since eating here. On the toilet for 20 minutes at a time last night and this morning. I couldnt even stomach eating breakfast. Definitely not coming back. ordered the BBQ feast for my girlfriend and I, and I have to be honest I was disappointed. Portion size was quite small for the price, and all the meat tasted the exact same, bland vinegarry bbq sauce. The chicken tasted like it was just boiled in salt water. Ive made far better ribs chicken and pulled pork at home. Now the fries and beans were pretty good. Fries had a wonderful crisp that I personally love and beans are something I always like. But the service was fantastic. I love that their parking is close and they bring it out to your car if you dont want to wait inside, the person who rang up my order was so kind and chipper, and I had some brief friendly banter with 2 others behind the counter abour portion sizes. All in all to sum it up, the food? Abyssmal at best, good if youre starving but not much else. The service? Absolutely wonderful, those people probably dont get paid enough.

A great little smokehouse. I had the pulled pork sandwich it was delectable. Really enjoyed the deep fried pickles too. My partner had the brisket sandwich and said it was yummy. Would definitely recommend and will come back forsure! Cant wait to try more things on the menu

Some people like vinegary sauce, no our fav though. Good nanaimo bars though. Coleslaw wasnt the beat neither.

Not a lot of options for US bbq in BC, let alone Nanaimo. But this is a solid spot for sure. Good variety of meats and sides. Would love a few of the other bbq styles other than Texas, but beggers cant be choosers round here. Not a lot of seating, and its super popular here (for good reason). Dont worry, this food travels well. Its just as good a few minutes later chillin at home or at a park.

Southern comfort style food is always great. The brisket is odd, possibly due to the cut. Nothing wrong with it just not the fatty tender slab melt in my mouth that I was expect. More thin cut tougher slices. Ribs, pulled pork, fries and beans were fantastic. Service was kinda fast-food cafeteria style. The building was cold probably because it was raining and were in a big garage. They also offer take home frozen meals we got pulled pork mac n cheese. Would go again very reasonably priced.

Got the BBQ Feast and it was nice. It came with corn bread and 2 sides,and lots of meat. I liked the chicken in the white sauce the most. Highly recommend that sauce. Parking: 10 to 15 spots

We were unsure of what to expect but were pleasantly surprised here. After a day out we ventured to the industrial area where Smokin Georges is located. There are menus at the tables but you walk up to the counter to order. Service was excellent!! The young girl who took our order was super friendly and attentive. She brought us plates before our meal and also checked on us a few times while we were eating. The other staff members were very outgoing and friendly too. Passionate about barbecue as I overheard then discussing the cooking methods with some other patrons. I was expecting to like the brisket more but the pulled pork and the smoked chicken are what impressed me most. The ribs were juicy and delicious too. Very enjoyable meal. Highly recommended.

the bbq here is some of the best ive had here in nanaimo. its not too salty or too saucy, its just right! the service here is top notch, and the food comes quick. even the vegetarian options are outstanding! the cornbread and salads too, are really good. they do good fries too. would 100% recommend. Vegetarian options: all delicious, i would recommend the kale caeser salad.

Best cornbread Ive had in a looong time!

While its not the best overall barbecue place Ive ever been to, it is definitely top notch. The brisket was excellent, the ribs were tender and flavorful, my wife loved the chicken with pickles on top, the pulled pork was delectable, the cornbread was delicious and moist, and the baked beans, which Im usually not a big fan of, were the best Ive ever had. Justice, our server, was excellent too! % would recommend.

AMAZING. I shared the brisket and pulled pork with my 6 year old. It filled us both and we had leftovers. Cooked perfectly! We will definitely be returning.

When the pitboss/owner comes out and greets you, you know youre in for a treat!!! Absolutely the best BBQ Ive had and Ive been to the southern US and had BBQ there!! If you are looking for the best BBQ ever I highly recommend you try this place!!! Definitely going back to try everything on the menu....PS. try the bacon topped Nanaimo Bars for dessert!!!!!!

Best BBQ on Vancouver Island. My personal favorite is the beef brisket but my wife loves the chicken. Great specials all the time. If you manage to be there when the smoked chicken tacos are available get them! I also highly recommend the beans and mac and cheese sides. Best beans Ive ever had. So good! Super friendly staff and owner, clean restaurant with the busy kitchen in full view. Take a deep smell when you walk in. That BBQ aroma is amazing. Vegetarian options: The vegetarian sandwich is full of BBQ roasted vegetables so you can have that BBQ flavor without the meat. So good. Parking: Restaurant is in a large industrial style building with lots of parking around it. There are 6 or 7 spots right in front and more to the right side of the building. Wheelchair accessibility: Door is level with the parking lot so no problem there. Tables and chairs are easily movable to accommodate wheelchairs. Just ask the staff and they will make sure to make your visit a great one.

Uh....YUM ! Excellent bbq. Try the goodies in the freezer as well. Oh, and be naughty and grab the bacon topped nanaimo bars.

Great food, smoked brisket Id the absolute best on island!

We were searching for somewhere to have lunch in the area and we were very lucky that we found and chose here. They were very accommodating to us...we had 2 kids with us (one in a stroller) and it was no problem. The owner and all the staff were super friendly. Good selection of beers which is a bonus. But, oh my, the food. Amazing! Everything we had was super tasty...but the ribs, Id walk over broken glass to have those again. Just go here, you wont regret it.

Smokin George s catered our wedding a few weeks ago and we couldn t be happier with them! The food was delicious and very reasonably priced for 150 people. Lea was so easy to work with and very organized. We had dinner service on the dance floor and we so appreciated how quick they were to wrap up during speeches so that we could move right into our first dance. There were vegan and gluten free options and the menu was kid-friendly, so there was something for everyone. Smokin George s Catering is a great choice for any event, big or small!

Ordered the Combo Plate with selections of pulled pork and beef brisket; overall it was a generous size portion for one person. Corn bread size was surprisingly generous and tasted good, maybe a bit tad sweet for my liking. Beef brisket was also surprisingly moist and juicy; did not feel and taste any dryness at all. Pulled pork tasted tangy and quiet vinegary on first couple of bites, however it was set just right afterwards. Strong smoky taste from the beans; very flavorful and inviting. Decent coleslaw. Definitely missing homemade sweet ice tea to complete the dining experience. Can also do some more side selections e.g. collard greens, hush puppies. Arriving at home still with smoke smells on shirt, which was a good thing :). Overall strongly recommended.

Staying in Nanaimo for work and was told this place was the best to my girlfriend went to pick up a combo plate with the chicken and brisket. The chicken has some weird white sauce on it that i wasnt expecting. I ended up giving the whole dish away to co worker after tasting the sauce on the chicken and now i dont have a lunch for work. I might try something else with no chicken on the plate but I certainly wont ever get that chicken again.

Great experience, ordered to go and staff were friendly and very quick to get the meal done. Food was very good, we tried the bbq feast and loved all of it, the nanaimo bars were the best weve had while doing the nanaimo bar trail. Beans were surprisingly good and so was the corn bread.

We recently celebrated my 40th birthday in Nanaimo and were looking for a yummy spot for nanaimo bars. We discovered Smokin Georges BBQ Restaurant, that advertised bacon topped nanaimo bars. These bars were to die for as well as the pulled pork poutine, fries and mac n cheese. The whole meal was so yummy and satisfied my family of four. It was the best meal we had while in Nanaimo. The service was exceptional. We were greeted the moment we walked through the door with smiles and seated right away. The food came out at a perfect time. The kids were given crayons and colouring sheets to keep them busy. The pulled pork poutine was served with a super yummy home cooked gravy like grandma use to make that brought me back to that time. It was the most perfect 40th birthday meal I could have asked for. Thank you so much, I highly recommend this place to eat! Two reviews in one. Came here a week ago for a pulled pork sangie. It was over-the-top delicious! Came back again after an airport run and had the beef brisket sangie. It was even better. I burped and enjoyed that smokie aftertaste all the way back to Comox. This is my Nanaimo go to when I come down-island.

I wish I could give this place 5 stars, but there were some glaring issues. Ordered the super platter, and half of the meat arrived at our table barely warm. The ribs were also very dry and some of them shriveled up on the bone. Despite those problems, all the food tasted great, and service was super friendly, although they were very busy! The pulled pork, brisket, and bratwurst were all delicious. Their sides were also great and arrived piping hot. Prices are also very reasonable for BBQ.

The brisket sandwich was to die for. Gluten free options a plenty, great service and super delicious food. Dietary restrictions: Lots of gluten-free options and very knowledgeable staff.

If you like Southern BBQ, youll like this place. Very gluten-friendly as well.

Outstanding food and staff!

Ordered 2 brisket sandwiches and although the meat and sauce was flavorful, it was underwhelming. Bread is blah and there was nothing else inside to complement the flavors such as an aioli or grilled onions which would be an easy thing to do. Would return but not for a sandwich as we love smoked food.

Unusual place and style, is it fast food, is it a sit down restaurant? Guess they are trying for both, i guess you are supposed to get your own water from the front? Strange concept, the ribs were good although the coleslaw was too vinegary and i had to repeat the order 3 times as the kid at front didnt understand me and charged for water without saying they had water at the front.

First time in. Menu has a well-rounded selection of bbq staples and some house creations. I had the brisket plate with beans and cornbread, and of course when you see something like pulled pork and onion Mac and cheese, you have to try it! Not disappointed at all. The brisket was super tender and damn near perfectly prepared - hands down better than the places I ve had brisket at in Texas, Memphis, or South Carolina. Great job! Parking: Parking is shared for the strip mall. To be fair, it s a large building with commercial spaces, not necessarily a strip mall in the common definition. Anyways, there is plenty of parking in the lot.

A BIG thumbs up to this BBQ restaurant Smokin Georges BBQ is incredible The first-time I had the brisket sandwich with fries and slaw the brisket is so tasty and was filling a awesome sandwich Its just right all the way threw 2nd time around I Had the combo plate again the brisket just had too But also with the smoked chicken, corn bread, beans,slaw All of it was so good Doesnt matter what you get here you will enjoy Uniquely everything brought together hits the taste buds just right

Exceptional BBQ for this area. Better than ones in Vancouver. Awesome!

The ordering and pick up went smoothly. Once we recieved our meal, the BBQ feast, I was shocked that it was listed to feed 3 people and was over priced for what we recieved. The pulled pork was the best part of the meal. The BBQ ribs were dry and underseasoned. We expected the beef brisket to be juicy but it was rather bland and full of fat. Considering the lack of flavour, I would have expected more sauces.

Best BBQ lever including New Orleans and the Southern States. Porkinater sandwich was excellent, loads of flavour and filling. Pork ribs are huge and extremely flavourful. These are not your typical baby back ribs. Corn bread was very moist with actual corn baked in. Beans had pork bits mixed fin with a vinegar and molasses sauce. Delicious. Staff and owner are very engaging. They make most things from scratch and you can taste the difference.

I enjoyed my time at Smokin Georges. The owner came right out to greet us as we walked in. The service was prompt and the food delicious. All together a fantastic experience. I had the combo plate with the brisket, pulled pork, cornbread and beans. Must say some of the best cornbread Ive ever had.
