The decor leaves a little to be desired as it is a little run down, but it more than makes up for it with the food and friendly atmosphere.

My food was cold but wifes wasnt so no idea but it was all just ok. From what Ive heard its going downhill fast.

Steak was cooked just right. Went in with a bunch of demanding diners, the Wait staff were most patient with us.

The food here is very overpriced, I got a cinnamon toast thinking it was a French toast and it looks like a struggle meal also. The toast is very burnt, It takes 30 minutes for a very easy meal.. I don t recommend!

I always have amazing service and food every time my family and I eat there, I recommend anyone who has a good appetite to go there, very generous helpings.

The food here is always phenomenal but please keep in mind that theres quite a wait on the weekends so if youre STARVING, grab a snack first! HUGE fan of their sausages! Will always choose this as my go to breakfast joint. Edit to add: there was no soap in the washroom when I went and the soap that was provided was extremely watered down and did not lather at all. Please replace when its empty! :)

We were visiting and made a last minute decision to eat locally instead of a chain restaurant. The fare was excellent. We bought the chicken strips, beef dip and breakfast. All was homemade, tasted great. Highly recommend.

It doesnt look like much from the outside and the inside is stuck in an 80s diner time warp, but from now on this will be my global benchmark for the best eggs Benny Ive ever had in my entire life.

Food was good. Had the Alices breakfast, with cubed hashbrowns. The hashbrowns have a really good flavor to them. The service was good and straight forward. Reminds me of the kind of place Id go back in the day with my parents. No over the top friendly bs, just order, be friendly and get your food in a timely manner. Will definitely be back. Place is older but not filthy. I enjoyed the atmosphere.

Worst food ever can t even cook toast right eggs over cooked burned food just horrible never order from them again

I ordered from here on the Uber eats app. First time ordering from here. I should have paid attention to the 3.9 rating . I ordered an omelette with bacon cheese and spinach, and mushrooms. What I got was probably the worst omelet I ve ever had. There was hardly any cheese, just enough to say it had cheese, and the bacon was little tiny bits of something that tasted like bacon, and too much of it! There was a decent amount spinach, could have had more mushrooms. The portion was huge, which is too bad because i threw most of it out, since it just wasn t good. I could have saved my money and made it myself at home. I m far from a professional Cook but I am married to a Chef. Save your money. Much better options available.

To be completely transparent, I have no idea if the food is good or not as we did not even get an opportunity to order. Walked in just after 11 on a Sunday to find it maybe mediumish busy (Ive worked in restaurants both in the kitchen and as a server in my past). A sign posted said Please seat yourself which we did. We sat for approximately 15 minutes with menus with not a single staff member talking to us. 2 took orders from tables around us (one came in at the same time) without even acknowledging us so we left. I wont spend my money at a place, regardless of whether the food is good or not, if they cant even be bothered to say Be with you in a moment.

Legit open every single day. Food is great. Take out is perf. My favorite breakfast place in town as a night shift worker. Edit: I no longer work night shift, but it still slaps.

Weve started haunting this place pretty regularly on the weekends for breakfast. Its not a fancy place but thats not why you go, its got a fun old school vibe and good menu, plus you cant beat the prices. Staff are always pleasant and foods pretty good.

I went with a friend for breakfast and was looking forward to Eggs Benedict. It was $18.95. I thought it was too big, so I ordered the single, with hollandaise on the side. The egg was just like a hard boiled egg - hard with no running yolk. I dipped my fork into the sauce and it was horrible - tasted like chicken noodle soup mix! The waiter didnt ask me how I wanted it, and when he came back to the table he didnt ask how it was (which was obvious since I cut into it and didnt eat anything but the hash browns) nor did he comment: oh, didnt you like it? He simply took it away. He never came back. We were waiting for a bill, so finally we just went to the front to pay - and he handed me the bill which was $17.95 for my single Benny. I said oh no, this is a mistake, I only had one. He said well, just because its half doesnt mean its half the price - we just deduct $1. I said: well if I would have known that, I wouldnt have ordered it! And now I have to pay that much for something that was awful? I didnt expect half the price, but I surely didnt expect one terrible egg for $17.95. It sucked and his attitude sucked. Ill never go back. Lesson learned.

Server was polite but when I complained about sour bacon he said oh, well nobody else seemed t9 have an issue lol, as if my concern was unpaid. Not to mention the crackhead who came and passed out at the table behind us while the waiter ignored her presence and acted as if that was okay in a restaurant.

Ordered a turkey dinner to treat myself. ($28 plus delivery etc) Such a disappointment! The gravy was thick like glue paste, no flavour. Turkey was not slices, but chunks of dry meat, as if it was the last of what they had. Burnt dry stuffing with little seasoning. Bland mashed potatoes and veggies. I did message the restaurant, they said thanks for the feedback, with no apology. Its sad to see how far its fallen since the days of Alice! Might be good for breakfast, but thats it.

Always get the Benny bowl. So good and the service is always great. This is the go to breakfast restaurant with the family. Kid-friendliness: They have High chairs and the waitresses love the little ones.

Wonderfull Staff and food is very enjoyable, lots of room and free to pick a table. Older Building for sure but the food and staff is what make or breaks it. Parking in back and front and fairly easy to accses. Bathrooms are a bit scary as shared with the building and other tenants/ busissness. Located downstairs, tho they will let you use upstairs Staff washroom if needed. Would love to see this establishment receive a grant or donations to renovate and update areas. Overall my friends and I like coming here.

Our family of 4 (all adults) went there for brunch a couple of weeks ago. Myself-nor my husband had never been there before we were excited to try it as we heard great things about the food. We were very disappointed. We knew it was an older restaurant we weren t expecting anything fancy, just a quaint family diner. But .. It s dingy, old stale smells of smoke throughout the restaurant. Downstairs to go to the bathroom was creepy, smelt like an old stale basement. The waitress had no personality and wasn t friendly or personable, she seemed annoyed to be there. It took over an hour to get our food. We were very nice and friendly the entire time,smiled, said our please and thank you s. The lady refilling waters and coffees was lovely. We know how difficult this line of business can be so we went out of our way to be pleasant even though we did not feel it. The food was okay, prices were great. However at our table of 4 we had 2 breakfasts in which there were hairs found on the food. There was no apology no anything when we presented this in a very nice kind manner. We will never we go back there again unfortunately!

The best part is that local kids draw portraits of the server, and he has them on display at the cash register. This place has super 1990s diner vibes, it has everything youd ever want in a classic breakfast. Bring a bookmark, as the menu has many chapters! Food

My husband and I go to Alices on a fairly regular the service there could be better from time to time but overall its a decent place to eat with decent prices.

Consistency is key. Alice s is a cozy diner, reminding of long ago days. The food is good, prices are good. If you haven t already been or it s been a while, make sure to stop by.

You can never go wrong with the food at Alices. But why bother if the wait staff just ignores you. Then brings you cold food? Never refills your coffee even once? And never shows up with your bill? I could mYbe understand if the restaurant was bust, but what if you are the only table? What was he sooo busy doing. I figure we wasted at least an hour of our lives we will never get back just waiting for our waiter. Do not recommend.

The portions are ample, the view is great, and the service prompt. I had the Monte Cristo with yam fries. The sandwich had actual turkey and ham, not sliced, packaged meat. However, this Nanaimo favorite is very tired and in need of an upgrade. Still good value for money, though.

I currently dont have a kitchen to cook in, so ordering from Alices via SkipTheDishes is a huge lifesaver. Today I was really craving a home-cooked breakfast. I ordered the 3 PC Pancake meal, not realizing that the pancakes would be large enough to feed a large family of giants. It made for a giant-sized laugh though, and the breakfast was delicious, as usual, and now I have a few days worth of pancakes left over. Worth every penny hahahahahahahaha

Its not true. You cannot get anything you want from Alices Restaurant, but they might have an Alice, jury is still out on that one. It is however around the back, bout half mile from the railroad tracks.

Pancakes were gummy and really unpleasant. Waffle was just pancake batter done on a waffle iron so also unpleasant. Shnitzle was tasteless and Im pretty sure it was deep fried. Hash Browns were oily. Poached eggs were cooked to medium at least. Washrooms were dark and terrifying. Mens had three or of order urinals with garbage bags over them and just sinks if stale urine. Womens had eight car Air fresheners hung in it to try and cover the smell. Just not a pleasant dining experience at all.

The food is amazing for the value and the staff is kind, thats the end of the good. I understand this restaurant is old and has been around for years, but it is rundown. The bathrooms downstairs stink of urine because the toilet doesnt flush, and some of the lights are burnt out as well. Our waiter was kind and friendly but was also quiet and didnt seem to have any emotion. It just seemed like they didnt want to work. And finally, why I gave these 2 stars is the wait time. We got there at 8:40 am and didnt get our food till almost an hour later. We were in a rush to go to Wildplay since our bookings were at 9:50 am. We almost left for the McDonalds down the street, but our food came in just as we were deciding to lead. Maybe it used to be good but probably wont go back in a hundred years

The restaurant was very dirty. Our feet were sticking to the thin carpeted floors and there was food and debris on floors. Tables and seats were sticky. Toilets downstairs in shared building were filthy. Air fresheners everywhere to mask urine smell in both mens and womens bathrooms. The restaurant was empty. There was our group and one other group. The male server was pleasant and prompt with the order. A little flat with emotions but overall fine. Food was very good with adequate portions and prices. Biggest concern was cleanliness in the restaurant and therefore uncertainty of food safe practices in the back.... Needs an overall cleaning. Remove Canada day decorations that are over a month old and brighten up the restaurant with paint and Reno. Great location on way to the ferry. Parking: No concerns Restaurant is upstairs. Not aware nor did we see wheelchair option

I am being told to update my rating. So we still go here all the time. The food variety is great , but we have been getting this girl server once again, I never remember names. Anywho, she was awesome, and when i asked how annoying can i be, she said Super Annoying. So i was. And guess what, i dont think they spat in my food and it was great. Great place.

I had an absolutely delightful experience at Alices Restaurant in Nanaimo! The fluffy pancakes were a perfect start to my meal, and the soupy underdone eggs, surprisingly, turned out to be a unique and delicious twist. The tasty bacon was cooked to perfection, and I must say, the softness of the napkins added a touch of luxury to the meal. I cant wait to visit again and indulge in their delicious offerings. Would give 6 stars if I could!

Really friendly staff and reasonable prices for these days but the food and service were only okay. Dirty plates sat on our table for too long, water not refilled, home fries were cold and not very good, slices of ham were quite thin.

Food was great, good size portions, flavourful not one complaint from out group of 6 when it came to our food, waiter was diligent but not much for conversation over all. The only part we didnt necessarily enjoy was the bathrooms way at the bottom of the doomy flights of stairs surrounded by little tree airfreshners and no toilet paper however outside of that we will definitely be back!!!

Alices has been around forever. Its the absolute definition of a greasy spoon diner. The service is okay, theyre stingy with coffee refills, the bathrooms are atrocious, and the quality of the food does not match the price however those price increases are fairly ( last 5 years) recent (used to love Alices early bird breakfast special when it was half the price it is now). its a good option when youre wanting that sort of breakfast and one that isnt rushed at you (cause getting your food takes forever). Its outdated, in desperate need of renos and a good deep cleaning... but every few months we decide why not and I cant see that changing. Just dont go in expecting gourmet when you know its a spoon.

Now this is a very cute older dinner style restaurant and that seems to be a mostly two man show. I absolutely loved the easy going atmosphere. I got the savory waffles! They are the perfect blend of savory and sweet, my significant other got the Blackstone Benny and loved it. If you are just looking for some home style dinner food and to just take it easy this is the place to go.

The food was tasty, but I only picked basic items. Done is the menu looks amazing though, like the sweet and salty pancakes! Next time. Service was slow but only because they got slammed and there was a huge group without a reservation. The food still came out hot. Prices were much more reasonable than other places in town, which was a welcome adjustment. Check them out!

Big meal for the price. I had the Western omelette and boy they loaded it with ingredients. Service was fine, the waiter was pleasant. The other person wasnt as customer service oriented. I think it may have hurt for him to smile. Overall, I dont think a customer would be disappointed with the food and it much better than chain restaurants.

This older style restaurant does not fail to deliver a BIG breakfast that tasted amazing! Im a big eater and struggled to finish it with my old school eat what you take family morals. My wifes massive omelet we took 1/2 with us and could easily be shared. The bathrooms are in very rough shape so if you can hold it I suggest waiting.

View, Service and background music is good. Ask for food the way you like and it is good also.

To recieve 1 star or 5 stars is a rarity for me. Even restaurants I dislike get 2 or 3. But Alices is a special case. From the musty smell when you enter, to the dirty carpet throughout, to the inedible food, its a wonder this place hasnt been shut down by the health authorities by now.

Pancakes are indeed MASSIVE

After seeing the reviews we decided to come for breakfast. This is an older restaurant that really needs to be updated. I love retro diners but old dirty carpets just dont work in an eating establishment. The staff are fabulous. The tables and chairs are clean. The service very good. Food portions are large so for those who like big meals you would be happy with this. The omelet I ordered only comes with toast, hashbrowns are extra however the portion is so big I couldnt have eaten any. The omelet is loaded. Too full for me but my husband liked it. Tons of ham and mushrooms but not enough green onions and tomatoes. To my taste, mushrooms were canned as it tasted a bit rubbery. Then again my husband said they were fine. Its about your taste. Prices are very reasonable for the portions you get. Having said all this, I do recommend this place to try it. I like to support local restaurants and I would come back and try something else.

Great no-frill dining with an expansive menu and generous portions. The decor is minimal but the restaurant has a fabulous view of the Nanaimo harbour and waterfront. Excellent work Alices team!

My wife and I have made this restaurant to be our breakfast stop after arrival at Duke Point. We enjoy the window views and have never been disappointed with the food.

I understand that its an older restaurant attached to a hotel, but its 2022.. Nobody has been allowed to smoke in restaurants for decades, and the smell of stale cigarette smoke was in the air.. A decent steam clean would fix that Id think.. The restaurant was not busy this morning, yet it took an hour for our orders(simple bacon and egg breakfast x 2).. Even my water tasted off. Overall cleanliness wasnt that great. Gunk on the divider between our table and the next. The washroom was dark and dingy and partially out of order. Gave a creepy vibe especially with the burned out lights. Our server, not very personable or friendly or attentive, seemed like he didnt even want to be there today. Disheveled, slightly slobbish. Probably wont go back.. Very good probability of that actually..

The best breakfast I have had in many years in Nanaimo! This will be our regular spot going forward. Great job everyone and thanks for the full bellies and happy taste buds.

The owner is very nice, meal portions are very generous. Pricing is really good. Feels nice to support a local business.

Bathrooms are terrible everything else is good.

Everything i go there,the male staff guy ignores me,walks by a dozen times and pretends he doesnt see me. He serves people after Ive come in and cleans all other tables while I wait. He doesnt even ask if I want a drink. Ive been there alot,but today is my last day. Being treated like that is unbelievable. I will never go there again.

So happy with the food and service, the Benny Bowl is amazing and is definitely filling! The pancakes are 6oz each and fill the plates, can never finish them but oh man are they good! Vegetarian options: Not vegan friendly Kid-friendliness: $10 Kids menu, Lots of highchairs and booster seats, ask the server for coloring pages and crayons Wheelchair accessibility: The Ramp is at the Back Parking lot to enter the restaurant, and If you need to use the toilet you have to use the Staff bathroom because of the stairs to the customer bathrooms.

Food was horrible couldnt eat it friends Food after sending it back was cold the second time and she didnt eat as well still payed for most of it will never go back

Was just in for coffee but the service was excellent.
