Shanghai City Restaurant in Nanaimo

Food was terrible, not fresh, and poorly seasoned. They then proceeded to force us to tip and argued when we didn t want to.

Pretty expensive per dish. Doesn t taste that well, the chow fun is a bit greasy. And the amount of each dish is small.

It s just really dirty. All the cutlery, bowls, soy sauce, etc. The food used to be really good though. I went today and I found the food very dry as well. The staff are friendly though.

Honestly I wanted to rate it two stars because the two workers at the front were so nice and friendly , but the food was so disappointing. The top of the special chow mein was uncooked (hard and crunchy) and the bottom was slimy and overcooked , idk how that s possible but I guess it is . The squid had that fishy smell slightly (which is a terrible sign when it comes to seafood, I didn t even eat more than one bite of it). The almost $20 special fried rice was cold, and even if it was hot it wasn t as good as other places that only charge 16.99. I did enjoy the shanghai noodles, honestly though that s probably because Shanghai noodles are just hard to mess up in general. I do give huge props to the two staff at the front though they re amazing. Never coming back sadly. (This experience was last night).

I dont know who the Lady was on the phone yesterday for the wonton soup delivery, but your kindness will be remembered and may it come back to you tenfold. I was so sick that I could only eat a tiny bit, but my brother had a big bowl and it was delicious. We will be back once this horrible virus is out of our system. Thank you again, the world needs more people like you that obviously isnt just about the almighty dollar.

Had Smorg tonight, greeter and server were great, food was ok, ginger beef too sweet, I think the whole place needs a renovation and clean-up for sure. Price very high!!

A gem near Nanaimo. We had the buffet and it was good. Conveniently located close to the highway and a good spot to fill your belly before getting on the ferry.

Took a trip to Nanaimo and Rathtrevor Beach for the first time (amazing) and we really enjoyed our meal here. Pleasantly surprised as there are basically no decent Chinese buffets left in metro Vancouver. Spacious dining room, delicious fresh food, and very attentive service.

Ordered delivery . Food was here in 20 mins. Driver said they werent busy . Food tasted like it had been sitting in their buffet for hours . Pork was tough and dry . Did not taste fresh made ! Ill go somewhere else next time.

Ive always loved coming here, the food is always nice and fresh, as well as tasty. The place is comfortable and looks lovely, and the staff are always very nice. They are fast to help get you seated and started, and getting the food isnt a long wait. Nh t is a very nice waiter, great customer service :)

I have ordered the spicy squid often. EVERY time, I order extra spicy. Only ONCE did they listen. Yest, it was a mockery of what you dont think my spice is enough? There was barely any on. I only go to this restaurant for convenience of Chinese food. I boycotted 6 years ago because of how staff was treated. Will do again except this time, Im not going back!

Went in to try the buffet. Server was excellent and accommodating. Food was varied and all fresh and delicious. Was able to relax and enjoy the food at my own pace. Will return if I have the desire for Chinese food again.

Comfortable place, the staff are always prompt and friendly. The buffet consistently has food we enjoy with great flavour. With prices going up everywhere, this is our go to for dinner out. Parking: Lots of parking, maybe busy in the day with other businesses open, but at night there is alot. Kid-friendliness: Family friendly and high chairs available.

First time here, the service was so friendly and attentive. We had the buffet, everything was hot and fresh. The green beans with black bean sauce was my favorite.

Fantastic service and low key atmosphere. Got a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) a few hours after eating the chicken balls. Completely unrelated to the food but when I was sitting there in the hospital for a few days I was just so excited to get home to eat the leftovers! Turned out my dad ate all the leftovers when I was laid out (my dad is obese). Anyways, highly recommend Shanghai City, or as I like to call it, Shanghai yummy

I am Chinese from Vancouver, and was looking for some Dim Sum. No issues with this place. All was good. Better than I thought really.

My daughter and I go on daddy daughter dates to different buffets and this was the best one weve found in Nanaimo! Exactly what youre hoping for in a chinese food buffet. Food was solid, there was a really good selection. Ambience was classic buffet including the classic fish tank which my daughter really loved sitting next to. Service was excellent and they were constantly refilling the buffet with fresh options. Price was more than fair.

Its a bit more pricey vs other local places. What you get tho is delicious. Worth the extra few bucks to have amazing Chinese food.

My daughter ordered online to have it delivered for 430. Not here at 500, she calls, they said its on the way, gets a call 10 mins layer asking why her order is not picked up yet. Tells them its suppose to be delivered at 430, says ok on it way. Got here at 6... and of course its cold. $100.00 she paid. We will never order again!!!!

The attitude of the waiter was very good. But we came during Christmas. There is an extra fee. The average price is more than 30 per person, which is a bit expensive.

Would have rated zero stars if possible! Food used to be so good here, went last night for Christmas Buffet, was absolutely awful. Every single item was either overcooked, extremely greasy, or lacking any flavor other than salt.

No-nonsense Chinese place with your typical buffet selections. Lovely staff and super familial atmosphere. Some guy in his undies barged into the lobby while I was eating dinner and announced to everybody that he d just jumped into the ocean in 2 degrees weather and was super stoked about it so that was pretty much the highlight of my meal. Gotta love Nanaimo.

Honest vegan review! Our server was absolutely wonderful, very attentive and friendly; The atmosphere was pleasant; The restaurant was large, comfortable and clean; The food was delicious, but not super high quality. I ordered the Vegetarian Combo (had to have plain white rice instead of the fried rice though because of egg). While I really enjoyed the items, I could tell most of the food was not freshly made, or handmade in the kitchen. Considering this, it was expensive at $20, and thats my only real issue. I dont mind if food isnt always fresh-made on site, but I feel like in that case it shouldnt cost the same as food that is. We will be back, but I will order more carefully. The broccoli with black bean sauce was my fave dish! Looking forward to trying the green beans next.

Would never go there again charged me for stuff I never got all apologized for for the extra charges but the made a big deal about my 5 year old grandson eating a couple things off my plate. If they were so sorry for the extra charges then they should have mentioned the sharing but overlooked those charges .like I would have if they came to my restaurant. I would never recommend this place or ever go there again

We had the smorg and it was tasty, fresh & well stocked. The price was good for what you got. The staff were all very friendly, and although the place is dated it was clean.

Unfortunately, this is the first and last time we will order from Shanghai City Restaurant, Nanaimo, BC. Here is a critique of our order: Honey Garlic Pork: The sauce tasted good but was very watery, The pork was not bite-size. Rather, it was in large chunks with chewy texture like gristle & jerky. Deep Fried Prawns: Tons of breading with tiny prawns/shrimp inside. Thee taste was like rancid oil. Spring Rolls: Nice and crunchy but tasted like old rancid oil. Vegetable Chop Suey: Mostly broccoli and the sauce had a strange slimy consistency. Overall, we were very disappointed and ended up discarding our order into the compost bin. We will not order from this restaurant again.

Not the best place for a buffet their food is squishy and half cooked for 25$ a person total rip off. Recommend not going there to eat.

This was probably my worst restaurant experience in a long time. I have no idea what disgusting mystery meat I was eating. Besides the friendly staff, everything was not up to par. I went for the 27 dollar supper buffet. I wouldnt even call it that because the selection was so minimal. I get that inflation is affecting business, but if we are paying that much, I want quality not rubber meat. The veggies were slimy and tasted a little off and the meat items were tough and lots of gristle which turns me off. Whe. I went to pay they asked how it was. I said not the best, and she didnt reply....just gave me the machine to pay. I have told everyone about my experience. Never again.

We did not enjoy our experience here at all. I found everything to have a very odd taste especially the broccoli. I didn t say anything to my family in fear I would ruin their dinner so I kept it to myself as I thought I just had a bad piece. Everyone ended up with the same outcome so I was pretty disappointed. No one finished their first plate and was still left snacking and being hungry. Looking back they never gave our total to us over the phone so we were shocked when it was $85 for 4 things. We called to let them know we were not happy and they offered us $20 off our next meal but I won t be eating here again. A few reasons why clearly.

Ordered a steep $82 takeout for 2 ppl. The beef in the chop sui was grizzly and tough. The won ton in the war won ton soup was not pork like they said. It was ground forcemeat made into a pate. It was hard to swallow and made me vomit. Explained this to them and they kept trying to tell me they know food. Not impressed and no compensation. If I had been sitting in the restaurant, I would ask to have it returned un eaten. Beware.

The food was okay id give it a 6/10 rate. But Everything in the restaurant was sticky like the floor and then my boyfriend said that the railing was sticky too when he grabbed and leaned onto it to help him as he walked because he suffers from COPD plus allergy season doesnt make it any easier to breathe, and he said he almost got stuck to it, and the table too was very sticky and the backrest of the booth too was sticky, and when my spouse asked for more ice water there was another table that asked for ice water after he did, then the waiter served the other table water first then had to refill the jug then came over to refill his water. Parking: Theres usually a parking space right in front of the restaurant entrance Wheelchair accessibility: Theres no stairs.

Arrived for lunch buffet but learned it was only on weekdays. Tried dim sum instead and it was pretty good. Flavours were good, chow fun was great.

The buffet had a good assortment of typical items and the staff refilled immediately, as needed. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Their mixed drinks need work but we ll definitely go back for the food. Update: Dinner on July 2 was much different. Inattentive server, staff just standing around. We were upcharged because they added 2 dishes to the buffet! We didn t leave happy this time and won t be back.

Love this place, the best wonton soup Ive had, and believe me Ive had a lot! Most places dont have shrimp at the luncheon smorgasbord, but they do here, and the chicken is crunchy and delicious.

Haha, that female boss is quite good at bullying students. After dinner, my friend went to the bathroom, and I was waiting at the cashier without paying. She said, Dont you want to skip the bill? You only have that little quality, haha.

Its been years since Ive come here, but still its a good restaurant. The waiters and waitresses are kind, patient and attentive. Some of the food honestly changes flavor from batch to batch, but its still overal good. We went when there was very few other people so it was a good atmosphere, but when its full it gets a little noisy, but that is anywhere. Dietary restrictions: Very accommodating for working with people with food allergies.

We arrived with a group of friends and we all wanted to sit together. There was only 2-4 other tables in the main restaurant occupied so there was plenty of room. We moved a few tables together, not bothering anyone. When we had enough places to sit, we were asked(told) it would be better for us to sit (privately) in the back room. We were shown where to sit (here we had to use 2 different tables so we were not all together), then instead of putting place settings at the seats, cutlery and napkins were put in the middle of the table and those who needed it could take what they needed. We all had the buffet (I believe) except for one of our group who is Celiac. She ordered, and from my understanding there was not a good selection of gluten free items. The food was ok, we were not bothered and the waitress did come to ask if anyone wanted water refills, but we were not asked if anyone wanted something alternative to drink. We asked for the bills to be separated by family. Most were 2 to 3 people on each bill. When I went to pay our bill, they automatically added a 15% tip and I was told they do this for large groups. It was a little disappointing, overall it felt like we were inconvenience them, put in in the back corner and mostly ignored. Then forced to pay a 15% tip. I understand we were a number of people, but as they werent busy, it shouldnt have been an issue. I dont think we will be back.

I got the vegetarian combo as delivery and it was really great value for money, plus pretty tasty. The spring rolls and dumplings would have been a lot better if there was a sauce for them. The noodles were plain but paired well once mixed with the tofu & veggies in black bean sauce! It was delicious mixed and had a good amount of tofu and veg that were cooked well. Id order from here again for sure. Would have liked chopsticks & napkins included as I was in a hotel, luckily I had my own fork along. Vegetarian options: Happy that they had vegetarian options, especially a combo of appies and main.

Fried rice had good wok hay flavour, it means they use a properly hot wok or pan to cook with.

I finally find good chinese buffet. To me, the food quality is much better than other restaurants or buffets. The reason I give 4 star because the sweet and sour pork is not that fresh but the overall food is good quality .Next time, i want to try takeout.

Brought out if town family to eat here no buffet so we just ordered a bunch of things off menu and everything was good besides the egg roll not a big fan too much cabbage and not thr best flavor to me and fried rice needs more sya sauce

Came here after calling to make sure whether it s open because it s one hour drive. When we got there the waitress said it s closed, and very rude to us, did not even say sorry. That s our first time to came to Nanaimo, but this place made us feel unwelcome!

Service was ok , but buffet not the same as it use to be. I dont know if its under new ownership or different cooks. Food wasnt good , chow mein was dry and hard and burnt. Some veggies and chicken had a sour taste. Not coming back here again. I would rather stick with Hong Kong house smorgasbord.

Poor wine selection, very cold in the restaurant, poor selection of buffet food, too spicy, Luke warm food. A dining disappointment, few customers at 6 pm. This restaurant is doomed to failure.

Buffet was missing many items ... the items left were dried out. Very few customers present. Buffet costs $25.

We live in Parksville and venture to Nanaimo frequently specifically to have a wonderful buffet dinner here. The huge selection of wonderful Chinese dishes are always very fresh and delicious. The restaurant is large and squeaky clean and the staff are very friendly. We highly recommend Shanghai City for a couple or a group for an excellent Chinese buffet meal and great value.

I used to love going there before the pandemic hit and then it seems as if some of my favorite dishes have been replaced with cheaper ingredients and premade/frozen things instead of it all being fresh. I used to frequent Shanghai City usually at least 3 or 4 times (once a week) a month but the last two visits have been substandard so I stopped going.

All the food in the buffet was dry and seemed as if was there for awhile. Not impressed at all. Will not go back.

Over priced, $24 for buffet! Cold and rock hard food. I will not be eating here again and do not recommend this restaurant.

Had done takeout for years but last time was disappointing. previously had mushroom foo young and it was great but now only listed vegetable foo young when asked it mushroom could be substituted the answer was yes but found out later on the bill that they charged extra -never did that before - and this was an almost 100 order. The food was far more greasy and the chop suey no where as good as it had been years ago. The good thing was the almond chicken - still nice and crispy. But overall sad that the food had changed - perhaps it was a fluke during covid. We might try again sometime.

Regularly come here for dimsum. Dont get me wrong, the dimsum is yummy hence coming back again and again but the price is getting a bit high now for each dish and the tea, they charge you and its not even that thick...basically just hot water after the first pot otherwise I still highly recommend for weekend dimsum!!

I didn t see one of the more authentic Chinese food in the city. It s got the obligatory buffet and a pretty decent dim sum. I myself go for the harder to make s more style vermicelli and crispy noodle house chow mein which they do a great job

Some of the worst Chinese food I ve had in my life. Dry/chewy/gross. The hot and sour soup was the only thing that was good.

Quite authentic given standards on the island! The beef and tomato fried rice is a little too sweet for my taste but the Singapore vermicelli is solid. The curry powder could be mixed in a little better.

Went for the evening buffet, was happily impressed with the food and the service. Arrived right at the start of the buffet time so we had the restaurant almost to ourselves. By the time we were leaving the restaurant was busy. The buffet food was fresh, hot, and great tasting. Crisp veggies, good tender meat and chicken, and flavourful sauces. One of the better hot and sour soups I have enjoyed and the best I have found so far in Nanaimo. Deep fried squid was crisp and nicely spiced. They have a little of everything but if I had to suggest one improvement it would be to add another vegetable dish to give a bit more variety. We are planning to go back and try items from the menu. As I understand it the buffet is more generally aimed at a Canadian Chinese dishes and the menu at more traditional Chinese dishes. I ll know more when we try it. Overall, we will be back as we found our new favourite restaurant for Chinese cuisine.

Overcharged me for my take out, the food was very greasy, give me diarrhea right away. I will not return.

The food is satisfactory. Pleased with the buffet. No issues with the quality of the food or service. My most recent visit was totally unsatisfactory. Dec 18 2022. Had the buffet. Many items were cold . Shu Mai was cold, dumplings were cold ,as were the prawns. The chicken balls were just barely warm and tasted under cooked. I mentioned it to the server . They were very unconcerned. Gave me the excuse that it was probably due to the cold weather. I have not been so unsatisfied with a Chinese food restaurant in my entire life. The food was so unsatisfactory I left after managing only 1 small plate. It will be an extremely long time before I ever visit here again. It used to be my favourite Chinese restaurant. Sorry to say it no longer is.

Good stuff

We moved here from Vancouver and have been craving Dim Sum. We finally stopped in and were pleasantly surprised that they had a full dim sum menu on weekends for brunch. We had the best service, food and experience. Most of their dim sum is made in house and the har gow and siu mai are legit - we will be going back again and will make this a regular stop. Try their rice roll with beef brisket, not what I was expecting from a rice roll but it turned out to be so tasty, likely my new favorite on the menu!

Im not impressed by your performance shanghai city. The buffet was lack luster, the chicken balls were cold and the mint ice cream tasted a bit old. Nothing special and it is very westernized. The curry chicken was my favorite out of all the dishes i tried. I paid 24 and i expected waay more authentic food with more variety. I am very disappointed.

I was really craving some Chinese food and Im spoiled from the options and quality in Vancouver area. This place meets my expectations expect for the friendly staff. Its not authentic unless if the staff leaves you scared and running from the poor service. This place has good service.

A Chinese Canadian buffet. The hot and sour soup was ok, not very spicy and just sour. The fried chicken wings, spring rolls, salt and pepper squid, gyoza, and battered shrimp were good. The sweet and sour pork and the beef were very tough. The siu mai and chicken balls with sauce were very bland. Overall they call themselves an authentic restaurant but they arent. Not even Shanghainese (the only dish being hot and sour soup). Just a typical Chinese Canadian restaurant but nostalgic for a Vancourite like me who hasnt had this in over 20 years because they dont exist here anymore. I was suprised they didnt have ginger beef, the Canadian-invented Chinese dish.

Great food and service. Closed Tuesday at the moment though.

Shanghai city is fantastic! It s very clean and the staff are friendly. I m so grateful that they have vegan dishes, we had delicious curry spiced rice vermicelli, tofu chop suey (the tofu was fried and cooked to perfection, the vegetables were so fresh and good) and super tasty green beans in black bean sauce we added some steamed rice on the side! My family loved the food and we have lots of leftovers for lunches..... a 5 star experience to be sure.

Delivery was prompt, food was hot and delicious. What more do you need. Will be ordering from these folks again for sure. Recommended.

The restaurant was a lot better before. Now not many Selections and not much service either. The price even goes up with less selection of food. Not much to choose for vegans. Disappointed.

Great food and great service

Good servers, good food, good price, I like this place.

Went for dim sum because everyone says how good it is. The food was okay, but for the portion size each small dish was $7.95. We also ordered a coffe which came in a very small cup which was $3. Definitely will not be back for dim sum again because of how pricey it is. Service was good though.

Food tastes good but the portions have shrunk dramatically while prices have increased. Wont be getting takeout from them any more.

ordered the Shanghai style fried noodle and it was absolutely the WORST noodle dish I have ever had , the noodles were basically boiled in this sweet sauce that had zero flavor .this will be the last time I ever order from Shanghai City Restaurant.

Buffet was below average. Not a lot of selection and taste was mostly off putting.

Fair Canadian Chinese food. Found the sauces too sweet and generally lacking flavour for my taste.

Delicious buffet

Had a great experience at the lunch buffet. Service was impeccable! The waitresses were on the ball, likely the best service I have seen in Canada(both working in the Industry and having travelled alot). The food was what I expected of chinese buffet. The Szechuan veggie dish was a nice addition and suprise. I really have no negatives or criticism its a good chinese buffet.

Who knew the best chicken wings EVER, were at Shanghai City??? Other personal favs are: Singapore (curried) Fried Rice Noodles, Won Ton Soup (broth is delicious!) AND Beef and Satay. This place has never disappointed in over a decade of monthly meals. Unlike many place there is no MSG, and as mentioned, broths are rich and flavourful NOT watery.

Sub par buffet. Not much to like at the buffet and a tad pricey for what it is.
