Asteras in Nanaimo

My friend took me to Asteras for an early Birthday/Christmas dinner last night and I can t say enough about his place. First of all it was super busy and we didn t have a reservation and they had a seat for us within 15 minutes. I m from Vancouver and Peter the owner used to have a Greek restaurant in North Vancouver (Paspereo s) which I miss so much! Peter and his staff made this an incredible experience! The place was just bustling with ambience. The food was incredible!!! Loved every bite of everything we ordered!The olive pate is outstanding and so was the beef tenderloin souvlaki. We also ordered the ouzo prawns, which were delicious and topped it all off with coffee and crème caramel, everything we ate was so flavourfull!! I really wish we had a Greek restaurant this good in Vancouver! I can t wait to come back here! Thanks for making this a special and memorable evening! The best Greek Food!

Amazing food, amazing staff and owner.

My familys favourite Greek food We go here every time were in Nanaimo. We usually get 2 orders of the platter #1 between the 4 of us and theres plenty of food left over for another meal the next day. The lamb here is soft and falls off the bone and has a sauce that is sooo good that we scoop it from the platter and drizzle it on top of our rice. Their moussaka is the best Ive ever had; the top part is like eating a rich cloud. For dessert we get ekmek, its shredded phyllo in a syrup with a vanilla/coconut custard and whipped cream on top, perfect ending to a lovely meal. The restaurant is always busy so definitely make a reservation.

Great food, best place to celebrate!

Came here tonight as an early Christmas gift to my family. There was 6 of us and a baby in total. It was amazing!! A few of us got the mixed grill special which had chicken, ribs and garlic prawns and the rest of us got pasta and everything was incredible and well cooked. Our water was always refilled, our drinks and food came quickly and the waitress came around frequently to check on us. The space is also really nice. I couldnt have asked for a more perfect night for a special occasion. Along with our very tasty dessert (We all had to try the Ekmek because it sounded amazing and Id never heard of it ) they gave us a complimentary shot which was greatly appreciated. I dont understand how this place could have any negative reviews. I wouldnt be surprised if any negative reviews were disgruntled ex employees or restaurant competition. I highly recommend making a reservation well in advance because while we were there the restaurant was incredibly full and had people lining up at the door. Also one more thing to mention and something I like to see at busy places like this, the restaurant has single room bathrooms (I love my privacy) and it was very clean. Appetizers and dessert were great. Vegetarian moussaka was unfortunately both underwhelming taste wise which Id be willing to overlook a bit in light of the other courses but unfortunately it also hadnt been heated through and was cold in the center when served which is pretty unacceptable for the prices they ask. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian Moussaka unfortunately underwhelming taste wise and also served with the center still cold.

Props to the servers for keeping a straight face and remaining calm while dealing with a full house, difficult customers and screaming children. Food is always great, you will never leave hungry and they will always try to accommodate you if they can when you don t have a reservation.

Best reastaurant in town and one od the best greek restaurants we have ever been to. Big portions of such a delicous home made food. Great house wine. Really appreciate the traditional greek decor and atmosphere, feels like home as we re from Europe.

The food here was just incredible, I cannot recommend the lamb souvlaki enough!! The staff were extremely attentive and the restaurant was very cosy!!

Delicious Great food and service

Food was meh. I mean it s too bad. I really wanted to love the place. Cute place. Excellent service. But the lamb was not great. Neither were the sides. The salad was good but very small. All in all a disappointment.

One of the best restaurant experiences ever. The place inside looks sooo lovely Greek, the staff seems to be authentic, dramatic Greek and the food is absolutely delicious, Greek of course. Price on the higher side but fair for the fantastic experience.

I had never tried Greek food before, and this place Homerun it. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm welcome, and the amazing aroma of the food instantly set the tone. Every dish was absolutely delicious, and the flavors were incredible. To top it off, we were treated to a unique and authentic Greek dessert offered by the house, it was so light and the perfect way to end the meal. This restaurant gave me such a great first impression of Greek cuisine. I can t wait to come back!

We were pleased to finally be able to experience the magic of Asteras this week & it sure did not disappoint ! Quaint ambiance that will surely remind you being in Greece. If your looking to get your taste buds blown away asteras is the best Greek place in town, food is authentic the owner and staff are amazing super attentive and so nice the food literally melts in your mouth this is the place to go u can t leave unhappy I promise u it s that good,it literally suits every mood it s so good giving up skip to come to Asteras more frequently

Fabulous! Five stars across the board! We visited this restaurant for the first time. We found a warm and festive atmosphere, excellent service and the food was delicious. A new favourite.

Asteras has been our go-to restaurant for special occasions for the past 15 years, and they never fail to impress! We celebrated my mothers 65th birthday here last night with a table of 12, and everything was amazing. The food was delicious everyone in our party loved their meal. The service was also excellent, attentive, and friendly. The only small complaint is that at times, it was a bit loud due to the authentic Greek music. But with that being said, it definitely adds to the lively atmosphere that makes Asteras so special. Highly recommend for an unforgettable dining experience!

A high-class, greek restaurant, nestled inside an old house in downtown Nanaimo. Asteras has an amazing variety of classic greek dishes, as well as other plates from around the Mediterranean. There is also a seasonal menu with dishes using fresh fish that are in season. This place does not take walk-ins! You must reserve a table in advance since this restaurant is incredibly popular; it ranks among the top 100 restaurants in Canada and is the highest rated in Nanaimo. The atmosphere is antique and beautiful, and the entire experience lives up to its reputation! Vegetarian options: A small but delicious selection of vegetarian dishes Parking: Limited space as it is located downtown, there is a parking garage only a few blocks away though. Wheelchair accessibility: Not very, large staircase to front entrance and very narrow paths between tables

The food and experience here was stellar! From the first bite we were transported to Greece, and it was actually better than anything I had when I was in Greece too. The portions were huge, and every component was perfection. The lamb shoulder fell right off the bone, and the lamb/chicken souvlaki were perfectly charred. The potatoes were also a standout - the texture and flavor were amazing. Lastly the setting is a cute little house - cozy and gorgeous. Amazing gem of a place! Owners are super friendly, service is very very fast, qaulity of meats are high end, Greek desserts are amazing, prices are more than reasable. A must go to place in Naniamo. Recommend booking in advance for it gets packed, even on a midweek....most gem of a place are usually like that. Its our new goto place in Naniamo!

Food was ok. I have been to many Greek restaurants all over Canada. Was looking forward to dining here. Both times I was disappointed by how close the tables are and the level of noise. It was difficult to have a conversation with my date without leaning in and yelling across the table. Unfortunately you hear everyones conversations around you. My ribs were overcooked and under seasoned. There was a freezer burn taste to them. Salad, rice and potatoes were ok. the Souvlaki needed to be seared or charred better and more seasoning was needed. Staff was nice and accommodating. Owner came by and checked in on us that was a nice touch. If you enjoy a busy restaurant atmosphere you may enjoy this. I like a quite relaxing place to eat.

We arrived without a reservation and they were quite busy, but we were seated after a short wait. Amazing service and the food was excellent. I would recommend making a reservation in the future, but this restaurant is on the top of our list!

We had an amazing meal here Everything on the plate was so fresh and prepared with care, from the tzatziki to the calamari. Very generous portions too! The place was hopping at dinner time, reservation is definitely recommended. It can be quite loud but the food was so worth it.

My husband and I had dinner at Asteras for the first time. The experience was incredible. The staff - all hard working, personable and attentive. The food was so delicious, we left absolutely stuffed and satiated. The atmosphere is busy but cosy. The owner connected with guests in such a personable manner, that I was in awe to witness an interaction between him and an older couple. The warmth and physical appreciation between the three of them, had me in awe for the ways that cultural mannerisms are so rare here and sacred. I can t wait to go again.

We ve been coming to Asteras for years and still love it! It s a trek from Victoria but well worth everything Asteras has to offer, and a couple of days in Nanaimo are always fun. Peter is the consummate host, making a point of stopping at tables to top up wine or check how everything is. Asteras staff are welcoming, friendly, efficient and work well as a team. And the chef and kitchen crew deserve accolades for continuously delivering delicious, fresh, innovative Greek delights. Went here on the weekend for a birthday celebration just two of us. Food was delicious. The Rockfish was slightly over cooked. Service was great until the end when the server asked if I wanted change back and I said yes. Bill was $71 she brought $20 back and said she didn t have the other $9 change. Not sure if she didn t think I was going to tip but I was actually going to consolidate my cash and give her more than the $9.

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened. We have always had the same food from the menu. Greek salad, eggplant dip and calamari. The last 2 times the calamari was buried in onions and half the amount of calamari. Its a shame such a popular restaurant is cheating with there portions. Are you not making enough money?

Nice ambience (although music felt a bit too loud), great service and good food.

This was a 40th anniversary dinner. We were looking for good comfort food and a quiet atmosphere so we could reflect on the past 40 years. The food was very good and satisfying. It either met or exceeded our expectations. Our server was amazing. She was attentive to our needs or possible needs. The decore was pleasant and very appropriate. Where things went off the rails was the level of noise. I have never experienced that level of noise in any restaurant, other than a sports bar/pub. It became so unbearable, that we decided to leave before checking out the dessert menu. When we arrive, the was music was somewhat, playing softly in the background and people were talking in a moderate volume. Two-thirds the way through the evening, someone turned up the music so loud that it had an immediate and negative impact on the conversation volume. It got so loud that we simply gave up trying to talk with each other. We quickly finished our meals and left having our dessert at a competitor s establishment where we could carry on our conversation. We advised our server and she was empathic and very kind. This is not to say that we will not return to this restaurant but due to someone s inconsiderate volume control, our celebration was a bit of a bust. Vegetarian options: One piece of advice, if it has any meat products in the recipe, such as chicken stock, it is NOT vegetarian.

Asteras is by far one of the finest Greek restaurants in British Columbia - the service, food quality, ambience and excellent management combine to make it a truly world class dining experience. This can all be attributed to Peter, its founder. He pays attentions to all the important details. Great selection of Greek dishes and wines. 5 stars and this compares to the top Greek restaurants in Montreal and Toronto.

Charming building and the walk up to the front door is welcoming. We had reservations and were greeted and seated quickly by a friendly staff member. Our server, Kayla, arrived swiftly and shared the specials with us. She was patient and gave us time with the menu. For our starter we ordered fresh tzatziki and pita, and saganaki- both fantastic. For our mains ordered two specials- a chicken and red pepper linguine in a white sauce, and a seafood capellini in a white wine sauce- some of the best pasta dishes Ive ever had. Kayla helped us pair our dishes with a great white wine from Stoneleigh. Thank you so much for the incredible food and service. Special shout out to Sophie, who ended our service and gave us some delicious specialty coffees :)

While visiting Nanaimo again, it was my resquest to return to Asteras and it didnt dissapoint! A Sunday night, we did have reservations ( I recommend) and it was open but filled up at time passed. They were VERY busy with some large groups and it took a few minutes for our server to get to us. But Angeline is worth the wait! Energetic and very helpful with the menu, Angeline is a gem, literally zipping around to serve her tables!! I ordered the roasted oyster appetizer and they were very plump and in a lovely lemon, garlic sauce! Delish! I had the lamb shank special in a lemony gravy which was cooked perfectly. Other party members had the chicken souvalki with a caesar salad and the Greek spaghetti and sauce. Everyone loved their food. They DO give you a lot, including the rice, fresh veggies and a salad...you could split easily! You DO have to pay for the pita bread which came out freshly baked/grilled! Its a cool atmosphere with fairly tightly spaced seating. It was actually quite warm inside even on a cool evening. Highly recommend if you want great Greek food!! Parking: There is a tiny space for abou 4-5 cars out front, otherwise, you have to drive around the multiple one way streets to find a parallel parking street space. Wheelchair accessibility: There are several very steep stairs for the entry, not aware of an accessible ramp.

Talk about diamond in the rough. Who would have known that Nanaimo had food game like this place. The hostess squeezed us in even though we didnt have reservations (strongly recommended), then rattled off about six specials, all of which sounded amazing. Food, staff, atmosphere were all fantastic. Will definitely be going back next time I find myself in town there.

We had fantastic food and service at Asteras. The A/C was out when we visited, but they gave us a table on the patio and we had a great dinner. We enjoyed the ling cod and the moussaka. We eat a diet that is heavy on Greek/Mediterranean food and the moussaka was one of the best I have had - topped only by restaurants in Greece.

One of the best places to eat in Canada. If you have the chance to eat here, its a must.

Ok... EVERYBODY knows this place is absolutely AMAZING, so Ill just add the same :) Every time we have a special occasion (anniversary, birthday or just want to enjoy a just two of us time) - this is the place to go! Staff is always super nice (the owners are always there and make sure customers are well taken care of). Authentic Greek cuisine definitely stands out in the neighbourhood! MUST try their dessert that is just out of this world (Ekmek)

Highly recommend this place. Been here a few times now and not only are the food, service, and atmosphere 5 star but they are consistent and hit the mark everytime. Roast lamb is perfect and spanakopita was delicious. We were there at 915 (they close at 10pm) so we finished up a little after 10. We were not rushed and still offered dessert (of course we didnt want to keep the staff longer). Great experience everytime.

If you are ever in Nanaimo and enjoy Greek food, you need to visit Asteras. The ambience feels like you are in the Mediterranean (see photos). The service was excellent. And the food was the best Greek dinner we ve ever had. A definite must try in Nanaimo.

Great food delicious as always. Our server Avi? She was fabulous made the experience just so much better. She kept our waters topped up, drinks nice and full and let us know about when our food would come out. She went above and beyond and made the experience special for our anniversary.

The food is so tasty, and the service is always wonderful. It can get a little loud since it is a smaller place, but its so worth it.

As always the food was excellent, especially the dessert. The staff was friendly and attentive despite how busy they were. Our seats were perfectly positioned for people watching so we were entertained all evening. This is still one of our favorite restaurants after many years.

Food tasted great, I loved the baked oyster calamari and pita bread! The portion was pretty generous. I would go back again and try other stuff unfortunately I dont go to the island very often.

Asteras is a quality dining place. The service was attentive. Unfortunately my entree, daily special seafood souvlaki, was disappointing. The four shrimp were tiny, overcooked and tough. The four scallops were also tiny and unappetizing. The baklava was exceptional.

As many superb dining it gets very crowded & loud, other than a very loud table beside us it was amazing, the staff had to keep moving patrons away from the noisy table, they should be aware of the noise level.... have a great time but not as to disrupt the entire place

Came with a party of 6. Had a brief wait for a table, but that was our fault for not calling ahead. They had run out of the roast lamb but they had a beef cheek pasta special that was fantastic! Server was great, always had a drink and a round of shots on the house was awesome! One of the best restaurants in town by far!

First time there and it didn t disappoint! Had a great meal and staff/owner answered all our questions. They even brought us a complimentary desert to share. Definitely will return when I back in town.

We went to Asteras for my husbands birthday and were over-whelmed with the amazing experience! The staff was so wonderful ! Service, was so great and manager was excellent! The food was perfectly prepared . Seating was great and decor was pleasant in a welcoming Greek fashion. I had the lamb dinner and it was excellent! Portion was enough for next night dinner!! Great value! Thank you to all staff and management who made my husbands birthday so special! I highly recommend this amazing authentic Greek restaurant.

Our first visit back in 4 years and the food, service, was every bit as good as we remembered. The roasted lamb, ribs,And calamari were excellent! The service was excellent, food arrival super fast, service friendly! We paired our food with a bottle of their Greek house wine, smoky, peaty, plum notes, excellent acidity. Generous portions with all the sides perfectly balanced in flavours.

Waiter Avi(im sure I spelt her name wrong) was very attentive and amazing! I ordered lamb shank and it was delicious. I also ordered a Miami vice which most restaurants turn down, in this case I was grinning ear to ear as it was the best Ive ever had. Completely recommend to anyone in Nanaimo

If you want a traditional Greek restaurant - this is it! The owner greets you at the door. The servers are all fabulous. I recommend a reservation - the place was packed and youd never know it from the attention we received and the arrival of the perfectly timed food. My son ordered the special lamb shank and I had moussaka - both were amazing. We loved the family feel. And my son was impressed the bar made him a Miami vice cocktail. I highly recommend this as a must visit. Interestingly it was recommended to my son by a friend and to me by a shop owner. Avy our server was lovely and put the gold star on a great evening dinner.

Absolutely fantastic! Started off with some Fanny Bay Oysters (fabulous!) and Melt in your mouth Calamari followed by one of the best Racks of lamb Ive had. Wife had Garlic Prawns and loved it too. Server was amazing as was all the staff we came into contact with including the from what we could gather was the owner.

Very good Greek restaurant, the food was very good, they had fast and friendly service, and they even gave us a complimentary dessert.

The service and food were excellent compared to most other restaurants in Nanaimo. I was especially impressed with the long list of details for the specials the waitress had memorized! Cozy, yet bustling ambience with pleasant yellow walls. Tender lamb...not quite melt in your mouth, but very good. I liked our red wine... pinot noir?

Servings are quite large, so good bang for your buck. Only complaint is that I ordered salmon and asked for it to be rare med. It was a bit over cooked and slightly dry. Everything else was great though.

What a gem this restaurant is. Great atmosphere, above and beyond service,and such tasty food. The staff were exceptional, and watching the chefs in the kitchen was amazing. A great evening out.

1 star for service as thats the minimum available on google otherwise i would rate 0.server showed poker face since we stepped in. also she introduced daily special to guests on all other tables but us, cold tone and attitude unfriendly conversation through the way.most regretted thing was i still gave 15% for tips shouldnt have been that nice and generous to that old tattooed lady. also half washed table mat and tableware still have butter&wine stain. would not recommend mainly due to the service as taste of food is based on personal preference.

Fantastic spot. If you enjoy authentic Greek food this is the place to go in Nanaimo. Every item we ordered was fantastic, service was excellent and the atmosphere is amazing. The owner even came out to say hello and shake our hands. Would absolutely recommend Asteras!

Food and atmosphere are great here. Good place for dinner with family, friends, or date nights. Owner and servers are pleasant as well.

We had a lovely dinner this evening. The service staff were friendly and attentive, despite being very busy. The dinner portions were generous and delicious. They were also very welcoming of our toddler. Thank you! Well definitely be back in the future

Amazing restaurant!!!

Wonderful treats and ambiance to suspend your belief and in Greece in Nanaimo. A wide ranging menu, delectable calamari, attentive servers and a personal greeting from owner, Peter. Always a treat to visit this unique restaurant in the older quarter of Nanaimo. Recommended. Parking: There are about 5 on the parking lot. The rest is street parking. Kid-friendliness: A few children visited during our meal time. They were curious and fairly quiet in the setting. Everyone was having a nice time

What a fantastic place, this old house turned into a Greek restaurant is such a unique experience. The food was delicious, and the service was outstanding. I would strongly recommend making reservations because this place is usually packed.

This place is amazing. Ive never had anything other than a great experience here. The food is delicious and the staff are relaxed, genuine and very friendly/helpful. The prices arent cheap, but theyre not too expensive either and, based on the quality, I find the value is quite good. Asteras is easily among the best restaurants in Nanaimo.

We enjoyed our meal here when we visited 10 years ago, and it was even better this time around!

Fantastic Greek food, on par with the food we ve had in Greece. 5 stars overall, no doubt, with atmosphere being 4/5 due to it being slightly loud. But a new favorite of ours for certain. In particular the lamb was excellent.

If I could give 6 stars I would. The food and service is next level!! Will definitely be going back many times.

This is some of the best Greek food on the island well that Ive had in my life! Very clean, very comfortable and the staff are great! Highly recommend calling ahead for reservations as they are very popular. We will definitely be back!

Probably the best meal I ve had in Nanaimo. Everything was amazing, very fresh vegetables and perfectly cooked. Pricey but portions were large and I left very full Owner also came out and asked if our food was good which I found to be very endearing

No reservation but fit us in!

Unfortunately, it was very disappointing, I was very excited to have dinner there tonight, and when I originally booked my reservation, I wasnt told it would be full of Christmas parties. So when we showed up they wanted to put us next to a group of 50 people where we couldnt even hear ourselves talking, the owner just said what do you expect its Friday night and its Christmas season zero apology no care in the world, So we went else where, which THAT owner was AMAZING highly recommend going to MELANGE

This place is incredible! I loved the calamari. The whole vibe of the restaurant is unforgettable. The staff is super friendly, and the drinks a great. I will definitely be back.

The vibes were immaculate!! Loud and energetic and very good food. Listen for the specials you won t be disappointed. Emily deserves a special shout-out for running out my purse at the end of the night. 10/10 so good
