Nori Japanese Restaurant in Nanaimo

Was visiting Nanaimo and stopped for lunch here. Absolutely loved this place. Mouth watering dishes and the warmth from the staff makes it too notch.

Great food with good service, but the small space is overwhelmingly loud. Its busy because the food is fantastic but definitely a sensory overload.

The most amazing culinary experience Ive ever had! Noris Classic Chefs tasting blew me away. The sushi was unlike anything Ive ever had before, it was inspired, creative, fresh and worth every penny! A must-try! Dietary restrictions: I am allergic to dairy and bell peppers and they were incredible about accommodating this!

Very showy which is fun and the food the first time I went was excellent. Take away on a different day though taste wise didnt quite live up to the first impression unfortunately.

Extremely awful experience. The worst service ever. We ordered the ramen waiting for an extra half an hour and were told not prepared by the kitchen. The server had horrible attitude and did not even care about it. This is the restaurant we all need to avoid and we were totally disappointed by the redbook.

I would like to give a major shout out to Victor for providing such excellent service! I have had him a few times and each visit he goes above and beyond with his professional, yet very warm and friendly energy. It s not often I give reviews for wait staff, but Victor is well deserving of it. I look forward to returning!

Really busy place but at least it shows how popular this restaurant is. Long waiting time, poor atmosphere, decent food, very loud, kinda expensive.

Had a family dinner here with our kids, they greet you upon arrival which was a nice touch and created a welcoming atmosphere. They bring you green tea right away and the service was top notch, they were kind and helpful with the large menu and ensured they got your order right. Our teenagers were happy about free wifi as well. I would highly recommend coming and enjoy high quality food and service.

Some of the best sushi in Nanaimo! Such a great and fun atmosphere to be in while enjoying some amazing food. I always get their green tea and miso to start off my meal and then a plethora of roles and so much sashimi, it s sooooo good!! They have such a great variety that every time I go I try different roles and I am yet to be disappointed by anything I try there!

Wow. This place was incredible. We went as a party of 4. The service was incredible the whole time. Always prompt, always there when you needed it. The portion sizes were beyond what any of us anticipated. The fish was all very fresh and the selection of choices were also incredible. We wish you guys were closer to us so we could visit much more often. We will be back as soon as possible. Thank you.

It s really average. I wonder if Canadians have never eaten delicious Japanese food. It s not as good as Tokyo . The service is also very poor. It took half a day to refill the tea and they didn t take away dirty dishes. There s no service at all.

Very very bad experience with Nori. The restaurant got very tasty and good quality food. However, the way the servers treat me can make my day a worst day!!! I decided to order take out for our family dinner at Nori because of the food quality. Besides all, I ve only ordered one thing for myself. And they DID NOT PACK the only thing I ordered for myself. So I got nothing to eat for our family dinner!! My family members did offer to share their food, but I felt so bad to get a bite of everyone s food. It s so embarrassing. And the restaurant called me during our dinner without feeling sorry. Then I knew they did charge me without putting the item on my receipt, so I thought they missed my order at the beginning. Then, the server asked me to drive back and picked up the food in the extreme pouring rain. I refused to go back because it is in the mid of our family dinner and it was pouring rain outside. Plus, I got guests arriving right after the dinner(just 30mins left). Then they even refused to refund my money back, just offering me store credits. Until I am pissed off, they said they will refund as soon as possible on their manager s working days. I don t know what to say, good food, but the service is what I said above. Make sure you CHECK YOUR BILL AND RECEIPTS!

I Tried the ramen for lunch today. The chashu was tasty but the noodles were really soft and unsatisying. Given that ramen is a noodle dish having quality noodles in the bowl is important, and these noodles were just bad. This is not a good place for ramen.

Quite a nice Japanese place with some delicious food! We ordered some takeout food for the ferry, and we really enjoyed it despite leaving the food in the car for an hour. They have generous portion sizes and some delicious Califry rolls, I highly recommend them :)

Sashimi was fresh. Heard the place is the best in town, a little but disappointing. Ordered classics omakase, which I dont really recommend, most of the cooked dishes in Omakase are a little bit salty, and we discovered a fish scale in the hand roll. Recommend to try other dishes.

Your online order process is next to useless selecting a time other than order now is frustrating in the least and apparently my postal code doesnt exist. Im sure your dine in is amazing as the pictures I see online look great and good quality. I however was completely unable to order. When you call to order takeout you should be able to talk to a PERSON. Not have to download an app DO BETTER.

This is the first time Ive ever been at a restaurant where Ive been told my table didnt have an assigned server. This made requesting things difficult along with obtaining the bill to pay. Luckily, it seems other servers were able to provide our food quite quickly. Also, the food, while good, wasnt worth the price. Kid-friendliness: Not kid friendly. They have high chairs but no kids menu.

The food tasted amazing and looked incredible. We got 4 different rolls and each were unique and well crafted. They had options ive never had at other sushi places. Although expensive it was certainly worth it. We were checked on often and topped off with drinks at all times. The only downside was that it is busy, a bit loud, and not super special in its decor but overall nothing that ruins the experience. Go enjoy some sushi its worth it! May require booking ahead as they were for us our first night in Nanaimo. Vegetarian options: Lots of veggetarian options that I could see and based on what I ate I expect they would taste great.

The service was okay and the sushi was meh. The fish was mushy and had a weird texture to it. They used metal chopsticks so I couldn t eat properly. THEY SPILLED MY TEA AND DIDN T CLEAN IT UP. I wouldn t recommend. ALSO, there was a tip option for 30 PERCENT?! no.

Get the Tuna Albacore Sashimi. Just do it.

Atmosphere, service, food are all delicious and good

As visitors to Nanaimo we were very disappointed in our sushi after the hype I d heard about Nori. Delivery on Sat eve took 90 minutes so the anticipation was real however the food was mediocre at best. Dry tasteless agadashi tofu, dynamite rolls which fell apart because the rice wasn t sticky, and small flavourless tuna nigiri. Perhaps this is a place one should only dine in, because others seem to be impressed w the food. Dedicated long time sushi lovers, we were not.

We love the food and the presentation of same. Sometimes, the music overhead is too loud or thumpy; pounding in my head while I am trying to enjoy the food or conversation. The service has always been warm and welcoming, and for the most part, efficient. I am glad that they hire all nationalities now, rather than only Asian. The proprietor is an excellent host and imaginative creator of menu items, and when he is serving at the sushi bar, he always says a boisterous hello to guests when they arrive and thank you! when they leave. I find this a very pleasant and unique characteristic of the restaurant, and it always tickles me when we leave and makes me want to come back again! Vegetarian options: I am not vegetarian and have not tasted their vegetarian menu items, but I have attended with friends who are, and was grateful that they were satisfied with the options and pleased with the items they ordered. Dietary restrictions: They are both informed and accommodating. Parking: The Costco Parking lot is adjacent to the restaurant parking, and although at peak times parking cam be difficult there seems to always be something available somewhere. Kid-friendliness: I have witnessed children of all ages and Moms attending with day-old infants! Wheelchair accessibility: There is a ramp to the sidewalk and double door entry to the restaurant as well as wide aisles and spacious enough floor area in the womens washroom. I dont know how easy it is to access the door to the washroom, but know that there is enough room to maneuver a wheelchair to the door.

Good was amazing as expected. Service was not good at all. A server actually ask for menu and pulled it from my hand. The rolls we ask to go after spending $100 fell apart in the to go container. Foid was amazing but service was not so good. Would reccomend take out. But they screwed that up as well. Over all disappointing first visit.

Coming from Vancouver, the sea urchins were sold out when I went there, which was a bit regretful. Every dish is good, but the creamy udon is a bit greasy.

It also looks like some of the products were not 100% fresh.

This is truly a hidden gem. If you re after top quality sushi in Nanaimo and you don t mind heading to a strip mall to get it, then don t hesitate to come here. They have an extensive menu with a whole range of items from simple rolls to high class options, including an omakase course and other set menu specials. Everything is done well and to a high standard with care taken on presentation. The good news is that everything is reasonably priced so whether you re looking for a quick sushi fix or a more fulsome meal you won t leave disappointed. Highly recommended.

Well this place certainly lives up to all the reviews! It s cosy on the inside, we sat at the bar so got great view of all the sushi dishes. Beautiful presentation for sure! Everything we ate was amazing. Very little rice on the sushi and tons of filling, and the portions are huge! Shout out to the tempura- so crispy and delicious!! Did not expect to find such a quality sushi place in Nanaimo, since we live on the mainland but it rivals the best places in Vancouver! They are very creative with the selection of ingredients and flavours. The drinks were also super tasty. The staff is very friendly and service was tops. Prices very good for the amount and quality. We will be going back for sure as it now is a place we can t stop thinking about when we are in Nanaimo! We had a good amount of food and 3 drinks and the bill with tip was $150 for two people. Highly recommend!!!

We were on the island for vacation. Recommended by a friend of ours. So much better than any gourmet sushi restaurant weve been to in Metro van and lower mainland. Very creative and delicious. We were visiting from the mainland, and heard that this place was a must go the food was awesome, we really enjoyed our meal! However, our server (Ella or Ellie) was less than hospitable. We were genuinely surprised at the service that we received. We are very polite people, we eat quick and we have great mannerisms. When we got there, it immediately seemed like she didn t want to serve us. We were rarely checked on, our table was partially cleared as we ate, and the way she spoke to us were as if we were a bother. At first I played it down to everyone has different personalities and she may be more of a calm, soft spoken person; but as we watched her interact with other tables, we realized it was only our table that was treated this way. My 7 year old son heard them singing happy birthday to another table. He got super excited, as his birthday is tomorrow and ahen he told her, she reluctantly said happy birthday, then walked away as fast as possible. My poor boy was only trying to communicate his excitement. When we tried to explain that the bill split was wrong, she scoffed as if we were doing something wrong then never came back with the machine to help us, so we had to seek out another waitress for support (who was very lovely) I don t leave reviews often, and it s unfortunate that this was the experience my family had, since we had heard such great things. Unfortunately, we can t bring back positive reviews to our peers moving forward.

The foie gras sushi was a bit disappointing, but everything else was delicious.

My job requires me to travel 30 weeks per year, and as a result I eat at restaurants all over the world. Without any hesitation, the sushi and service at Nori is as exceptional as any sushi spot I have been. A hidden gem that punches way way above its weight-class, I never miss this place when I am on the Island. Busy spot, make reservations! It is more than worth it.

A local recommended this restaurant and it certainly did not disapoint. Place was lively for a Monday (lunch), had to wait a few mins to sit down as the place was full. Fantastic food, excellent vegan options that are made from real vegetables and flavorful, great service where they remembered to even give me a vegan version of the soy sauce. My non vegan friends thoroughly enjoyed the food as well. Their drinks are actually normal price and not awfully expensive like Vancouver. Its too bad theres only one location in Nanaimo. I would definitely go back. Compared to the current inflated prices in Vancouver for dining out, the price was really not bad for the food and service that you get and we were pleasantly surprised. The only thing I was maybe missing was a vegan dessert option, but its really not a big deal! Vegetarian options: Fantastic vegan options including the magic mushroom roll and the vegan roll. Nori is our favourite place to go in Nanaimo, (the best on Vancouver Island). We usually go for dinner, first time for lunch with our overseas friends and family. Everyone was surprised about the quantity in a lunch set and the great quality of the raw fish. We love the generous size of the pieces of sashimi and the pieces on sushi. All the items in a lunch set are perfectly done, I m not usually a big fan of prawn tempura, but wow, they were super good. The order of hamachi cheek is my all time favourite as well. A restaurant never disappoints. Worth our drive every time. Thank you!

I always love Nori s food. Definitely my top choice everytime I visit Nanaimo. Service is a bit slow but it could be because it s too busy. Atmosphere is ok. An upgrade would be nice but still good enough for family or casual dining.

Best sushi in Nanaimo

Stopped for lunch after getting off the ferry. Our server, Lucy, was very welcoming and friendly and made us feel right at home. Food was amazing as always and the atmosphere was top notch as well. Nori never disappoints, the food and staff are always exceptional!

If you want great sushi with some unique twists, Nori is the place. Super fresh fare that comes to you as a work of art. Great selection of Korean and Japanese beer and rice wines. John had done a masterful job with this restaurant. He has also opened a South Korean BBQ style house not far from Nori called Horang. Probably two of the tastiest restaurants on the island. Highly recommend both.

Great place for sashimi. Their BC uni is really really good. We had the Sashima Omakase and a sashimi don. Not pictured are the extra order of uni and desserts. We also saw some fun rolls getting sent out as we sat at the sushi counter. Great place in terms of quality and value.

This is an okay spot if you are craving sushi when visiting Nanaimo; the atmosphere is great, servers and chefs are all very friendly. The scallop and tobiko nigiri is very refreshing though. Salmon sashimi was okay; wagyu nigiri was meh. They have a lot of options for rolls, the flaming viper roll was definitely visually pleasant but could use a little less soy sauce; the strawberry crunch was a suprising combo but we enjoyed it a lot. We ordered the black sesame dorayaki and it s not quite what we expected; it came in with deep fried dorayaki which was pretty weird and not described in the menu, the ice cream on top was okay but the deep fried dorayaki really threw us off. Overall the food is not bad, if you re visiting from the lower mainland, lower your expectations; but it s good for a sudden craving in Japanese food.

Ive eaten here many times now and am always amazed and impressed by the service, food, and welcoming environment! If sitting at the bar you get amazing entertainment from fun and witty sushi chefs, and sat anywhere you always experience wonderful service from the servers! I went in a group of 10 people to celebrate a friend s birthday. Really enjoyed eating fresh & thick cuts of sashimi and creative sushi rolls ! Quite a vibrant and noisy sorta vibe, service staff was always ready to serve more hot tea which i love. Dessert was surprisingly yummy too! Can t wait to be back

First time. Lovely place. Good service from our waitress, constantly filling up our tea. Gorgeous plates. Only downside was it was a bit loud during the lunch rush but it got noticeably quieter later on in the meal by mid afternoon.

I was in with two friends. Halfway through the meal I ordered a glass of wine that finally arrived as we were finishing our last bite. I told our server, Victor I think, no it was too late I didnt want it. He apologized and took it away but it would have been a nice gesture to let me have it considering it was poured. As always the food was delish and perfectly prepared. As always its loud and chaotic. Definitely not relaxing.

Amazing sushi restaurant, a lot of choices, not just sushi. Get greeted by chefs and enjoy the busy atmosphere of a good restaurant. The servers are very helpful and kindly navigate your thru the menu. The food was also prepared and on the table under 15-20 minutes, even though the restaurant was full. Everything was mind blowing and tasted fresh.

Food was great. Tried the easiest plate to order on my first time: chef s raft. I would definitely go back and try other menus next time. However, I wouldn t wait an hour on the line to get in. Online booking recommended. The restaurant has quite dark atmosphere and it is crowded and noisy which wasn t great for my young child. Service was also good enough but there are room for improvement.

Neg: an hour and half from Victoria Hidden gem of a restaurant in Nanaimo which has excellent service, food, and free parking.

I just tried it due to the high reviews and it is not worth the price. I did take out for $75 worth and I did not enjoy any of the rolls (Dino and island 2). Wild salmon sashimi was ok quality and tempura yam. Tempura avocado tasted very off. How is this rated so highly? I wont be trying it again....

Wow!! The sushi here is definitely some of the best Ive ever had!! Reservations are definitely recommended even on what you might think would not be a busy day. The atmosphere lends itself well to dress up, though you can also go casual and still fit in just fine! The portions are quite filling so I suggest you order less to start and can always add more as you go. While the menu centres around what I would call gourmet sushi, there are still a handful of other options including chicken karage (fried chicken) and other Japanese and Korean dishes. Some of our faves include tuna pesto aburi, UK fish and chips roll, spring caterpillar, lobster. Plan to return here multiple times to try it all lol!! Lots of great selection, fresh fish and seafood and extremely tasty!! Great service, we were given a complimentary cheesecake and plum wine for my partners birthday. Staff are attentive and friendly overall. Thank you for a great experience both times weve visited

Loved the mango philli roll and the real crab. The tempura (prawn and avocado) were both amazing.. the only thing I did not like was the teriyaki bowl with tofu. Having said that, I am a regular at Nori and so far everything else we eat there is spectacular! Best sushi place I have ever been to.

The Strawberry Crunch Roll is another thing entirely; fried and sauced.

It s my first time eating there and I must ve hit an off night because my takeout was just a big bowl of really mushy overcooked noodles and some fried tofu. It didn t taste like anything except oil however, the service there while I waited, was excellent they served me tea and was very friendly.

Best place on the planet

The Sushi here is an experience, honestly sushi at Nori is as good as it gets. I absolutely love going there to eat. The staff are all super knowledgeable and friendly and it is clean and tidy with nice decor and lighting. The THC roll is so awesome as well as the pressed roll with salmon and Japanese major with the jalepeno on top. 10 out of 10.

I can say from all the Japanese diners Ive eaten at across North America this restaurant tops my list from its quality of fresh fish, perfect presentation of the meal, service right there to help you immediately, the design of the restaurant matching the mood of the style of food and an open kitchen to show you the quality of their work effort being timed perfectly with their services.

Such a fun experience. Amazing, friendly service. Fun atmosphere - especially if you sit at the bar! And of course, the food is exceptional. My husband and I drive an hour to eat here on special occasions. The ramen is delicious and the black sesame dessert is to die for. Highly recommend!

Anyone who gives this place less than 5 stars is literally sniffing glue. You just can t top this kind of quality, creativity, presentation and service. Always amazing! I often take people here to impress them.

An excellent food. Me and my husband was celebrating my birthday. A bit congested place for sure not for romantic celebration but food is amazing! For friends gathering is a perfect place! And special thanks to the Chef for giving small gift:)!
