I had never been. We greeted at the door, told I can choose my own seat. I sat by the window. I was not given any direction of how to order. But there were menus under the clear plastic on the table. I went on a Thursday so I had the Barria Tacos. They were good. Nothing super fancy or exciting for $25 after taxes. I am looking forward to going to the taco buffet on a weekend.
I ordered a chicken burrito with extra veggies and guac for take out and let me tell you, it was the best pre-gym meal of my life!! I ordered during their busiest time and it was ready in 10 minutes. Parking was tight, but I was in and out so not a problem. They really load you up so the serving size was more than enough. Decently priced too, about the same as other burrito chains but much higher quality. It’s super cute in there too, very authentic and gives you all the mom and pop feels. I’ll be back! 🫶
A friend and I went to Jalapeño's for the first time yesterday and had a wonderful time. Friendly, helpful service; menu prices are more than reasonable; and the food was all delicious. We shared the choriqueso [like a cheese fondue with chorizo sausage in it] and it was fantastic. Melty, tasty, not overly spicy! We ate it as a starter and also put some of it onto our mains when those came out. We both ordered the taco trio [one carne asada, one carnitas, one al pastor] which comes with rice and beans. It was all good, but the beans were amazing! Feel silly saying that about beans, but they were the best refritos I've ever had. We also both had the hibiscus drink and it was fantastic, not super sweet and a nice floral taste. After our meal, we paid and each got one of their buñeolos [a crispy donut of sorts, not pictured] to take home. That was crispy and coated in cinnamon-sugar. I'll definitely be back!

I had a carnitas burrito to go and was blown away. Probably the best burrito I’ve had in my time in Canada. I’m used to American style Mexican food and I’m always skeptical getting Mexican north of the border, but this place showed me that it’s possible in Canada! Highly recommend and need to try the all you can eat tacos when I’m visiting Nanaimo again.
I’ve heard nothing but great things from friends, coworkers, and strangers, about Jalapeños. First visit: Three of us dropped in for dinner. Service was great, people were friendly, food came in good time. I ordered the Fajitas and they were excellent. Good quality of food (leftovers were enjoyed the next day). Tasty, hot, lots of flavour, as expected. Another of my party ordered the Mole platter and also enjoyed it. The third person in our party ordered two dishes, a beef burrito (was going to take it home) and the enchiladas rancheras. The enchiladas were very good but not their preference so they tied into the burrito. They said that it was very bland and did not want it. I dismissed the opinion and suggested we pack it and take it home as I would have it. Later I tried it and was surprised… it was as if someone forgot to season the beef… seriously it tasted like nothing but plain hamburger. (I added salsa and enjoyed it anyway) This is the only reason I am giving a food rating of 4/5, and I’m reserving final judgment for the next time I go… which I definitely will be doing. The bottom line: for us 3 out of 4 dishes where great and will be ordered again. I will not let the, likely, one-off lacklustre burrito experience stop me from going and ordering again, and I recommend you don’t let it dissuade you either. There is too many good things to enjoy not to try Jalapeños out! (I’ll update this review when I’ve tried the burrito again) Second visit: dropped in for lunch with a coworker. I had the Jalapeño burger and they had the chicken quesadillas Jalapeños. The burger was awesome. Great flavour, “home made” thick patty, and a good amount of toppings. I’ll be ordering this again and I recommend you order it also. My coworker enjoyed the quesadillas and in fact went back to Jalapeños for supper… that right there is a good endorsement.
after seeing the high star ratings, we thought this was going to be one of those amazing “hole in the wall” places with authentic mexican food. turns out it was just a “hole in the wall”. the guacamole and chips were just plain unsalted tortilla chips heated up and mashed avocado with 4 small pieces of tomato at the bottom. the chicken tacos were just plain shredded chicken with some lettuce and tomato pieces on a small soggy tortilla, the steak tacos were essentially the same but with tough flavourless steak pieces, and the fish tacos were filled with some mystery sauce and a thin oddly shaped breaded “fish” stick. I have never had worse tacos in my life and after we paid way too much, my boyfriend said “I would have rather lit 50$ on fire”. A blind man who had never tasted Mexican food in his life could’ve made a better dish and I’m pretty sure every review is either fake or the people have just never had food.
Went here for dinner and we are definitely coming back. We were seated immediately and our food came quick. I got the Tex mex burrito witch was amazing and extremely filling. My taste buds got a bit ahead of themselves and I ate the burrito a little too quick for my stomach to handle.

Just passing through Nanaimo and did a quick search for nearby restaurants. Very happy to have found this gem. We had the mole enchilada and chicken fajitas. Lovely! And very friendly staff. Only comment is that it would have been nice if the fajitas came with more than three shells. Five would be appropriate. Gracias!
The best Mexican food in town!
I am from Sasakatoon, and also a chef. I love finding authentic cuisine wherever I travel, and this spot did not disappoint. I can tell its family run, the food is made with care. Anyone who says it is unsalted...not everyone can have a lot of salt,so no biggie, maybe have some shakers on the table? Otherwise, service was EXECELLENT, so was the food. Reminded me of a small spot in Saskatoon Ive been going to for years,@labambayxe. Thank you for the amazing food at an amazing price

Poor Service. Poor Food Quality 2 Visits back to back days while studying at VIU. The restaurant was not busy less than 10 ppl when I arrived for my lunch meal. I ordered the taco trio with beans and rice on the side. 20 mins to table and I notice my food was burnt lets see what happens next... No check-in from the wait staff to advise that I would need a knife for my rice and beans and possibly a better beverage and to let them know my food being burnt was a little concerning. The rice was very dry little moisture to my liking both days. My waitress service was non-existent after the meal was served. 50 minutes I sat, my waitress never returned after the initial order was placed down. I was polite, not trying to be a jerk about things when I explained my concerns. I dont even think they apologized Rather they try to explain that they dont provide a knife when issuing tacos. however, my platter included side items that a knife would be very useful for. When I raised the point that my food was burnt, it took convincing the waitress based on her puzzled facial expression when Im showing whats on my plate so, I had to smear with my coffee spoon, the burnt, bitter, greased guck glob that was smothered in with my beef Taco just to show that this was not seasoning or any common ingredient that would be expected in the meal paid for. Clean the grill and not into the meal chef. Im not a fussy eater in that way people, I promise and I wish I took a picture so I could post it. Trust me it wasnt a fun experience. No discount on my bill.... and like I said, I dont even recall an apology so Ill never go back there. Jalapenos management, enjoy your $55 for my two meals on these last two days. I do enjoy Mexican cuisine but Ill be skipping this location going forward forever. I honestly tried and wanted to have a good experience 2xs in good faith but Jalapenos wont get a 3rd chance for me to feel the sting of restaurant complacency.

2nd time here. First time was.magnifico. this time not so much. Really annoyed trying taco buffet...soup extra cost sour cream extra cost grated cheese for tacos extra cost no desert no hard shells maybe they were extra cost. The soft shells were almost wet tasteless and lifeless. Used to like this place...when you cheap out on $20 meals its time to go somewhere else

We had doubts due to the decors and location (next to a gas station) but we were pleasantly surprised! It was the best Mexican food I ve had in a very long time. The only disappointment was the horchata which we thought was too watery. Everything else was delicious!
I changed review to 4 from 5 due to the staff needing to be more assertive with customers reusing their dirty plates at the buffet. There are people touching the communal serving spoons to their used plates and placing them back into the buffet food. Please don t allow the ignorant patrons to do this, someone could get sick. I ll skip the buffet until this has been resolved.

Id call this worse than gas station food but its fitting because its next to a gas station. Flavorless bland overcooked and everything tastes like it came from a can or bag. Ive eaten a ton of Tex Mex in the southern us and proper mexican food as well. This doesnt even register. Extremely overpriced as well. Avoid.

Literally, not sure how this place could have any less than 5 stars. Literally the best, most authentic Mexican Ive ever had, and without a doubt the best on the island for sure. Amazing food, very reasonable prices, great menu, great friendly service, and the family that runs it puts so much love into the place, and the food. You can tell these are authentic, and likely family recipes. Great atmosphere, air conditioned in the summer. This is thee spot!!!

I ve never written a review for anything, but this place was so bad I felt compelled to share my experience. We were drawn to the location by the 4.7 stars and the large number of reviews. I m now convinced that the reviews are fake, as there is no way over a thousand people would somehow think that the food here is anything other than terrible.

We wanted to go again but we were just passing through. We were excited to see they were building one in Parksville. Good tacos. Parking: We had to park our car around the corner because there was only like 6? Tight parking spots outside the restaurant.

I had the pleasure of dining here tonight for the first time. I joined my brother who eats here regularly he and his wife like it so much. I had the Enchiladas Rancheros with chicken, YUM! So fresh, delicious, flavourful, authentic food with friendly quick service. My brother had the Mexican Plate, he did not have any left overs. The portions were large, my dish included 3 good sized enchiladas filled with chicken, a huge helping of beans, rice and green salad, I had left overs. Lots of Juaritos flavours to choose from. I didn t explore much else as we were busy catching up however I have no complaints and would highly recommend to anyone who loves Mexican cuisine to visit this restaurant. Look forward to returning.

Theres a new Jalepenos opening in Parksville. Our friends went, and said it isnt quite ready for prime time yet. Mainly, not enough staff yet. We decided to try the one in Nanaimo today. We got great service, prompt and polite. I ate the best refried beans Ive ever tasted! The crispy beef taco was excellent, the beef was so flavorful! We had no complaints about our meal!
I really enjoy this place and at risk of making it more difficult for me to get a seat I have to throw five stars down. Everything Ive tried here has been top notch, service is the same. I really enjoy the Al Pastor, Ill be back for the Mole.

My daughter just brought me home take out from Jalapeños!! Wow what a nice surprise it s so incredibly delicious!!! I got the taco trio and she got the crispy taco plate! With all the sides: hot sauce, sour cream, guacamole and Mole sauce! I will definitely be going back for more again and again!

Let me say first the food is amazing. The service was was non existent. Came in and stood by till for ten minutes before any person acknowledged our presence. As a small business this is not good. I do not want to get into too much detail. I will be going again but if this happens again my review will definitely be lowered. Also we did takeout because we watched as a table left and was not cleaned for fifteen minutes as people were waiting to be seated. Waited years to go and honestly could have never went. Do not let me down a second time.

Such a great little place for authentic mexican cuisine. Having visited Mexico before, I really wanted some chilaquiles and they were amazing! Its quite a laid-back place, they take your order at your table, but just come by to bring food/drinks then you get up to pay at a till on your way out.

If youre looking for the best Mexican food in Nanaimo, this is it. The food is outstanding and the service is friendly. They offer a variety of dishes and can cater to people who have a high tolerance for spice and to those who cant handle any spice at all. Portions are big and the price is very reasonable. Eating in is best but most food will do well as take-out, too. Dont be fooled by the location. This place is fantastic.

We googled this restaurant when we traveled to the island. It s not a disappointing. Fair price, good size, our orders taste good. We didn t notice they have buffet available. Will definitely try next time. There is no restaurant sign and it s beside another restaurant. We have to look at the unit number and make sure this is the one we re looking for.

Saturday all you can eat Tacos are amazing ! The el pastor was to die for. Very friendly .
The overall dining experience left much to be desired. Despite high hopes, the flavors of the food fell flat, lacking the vibrancy and depth expected. Each dish seemed to lack the attention to detail that elevates a meal from ordinary to exceptional. Additionally, the presentation of the dishes was underwhelming, failing to impress visually or create anticipation for the flavors to come. Instead of the anticipated culinary journey, the atmosphere and service resembled that of a fast food establishment rather than a fine dining experience. Overall, it was a disappointing visit that failed to deliver on the promise of a memorable dining experience.
Awesome people running an adorable little store, feels very genuine. Ill change my review if i order something that really speaks to me more! I wasnt a huge fan of the build your own taco night, but thats a personal opinion not anything to do with the restaurant! Do recommend. Good food, good people. Family run from what i can tell! Parking: Only about 9 parking spots in the area, but no surprise, bit of a hole in the wall tiny restaurant, can park across the st and walk over though! Kid-friendliness: My little brother loves them

Jalapeños is not only one of my favorite places to eat in Nanaimo, but its hands down the best Mexican food in the city. From the moment you walk in, youll experience genuine smiles from everyone that works there. The service is outstanding, I cant say enough how happy everyone is and how I feel appreciated as a customer. The food is incredible! Its very authentic and not fancy, which I find can take away from the way food is supposed to taste. Its the exact definition of comfort food, and tastes amazing. The tacos are fresh tasting, the chorizo is to die for, and the steak burrito is delicious and very reasonably priced. I cant forget the hot sauce... I dont know what they put in that stuff, but it is SO very good! I would absolutely recommend Jalapeños to anyone looking for a really tasty meal at a very reasonable price. Go there. Try it. Do it now!

Why am I just discovering this place now? Wow fresh, authentic, but most importantly, delicious Mexican food. Drop in for a plate of fresh crispy tacos. In and out in 20 min. Sooo satisfying! Took a day trip to Nanaimo. Googled and found this place. Didn t look like much from the outside. Ordered the Mexican plate, chicken fajitas, veggie fajitas and Huevos Kikapu ( I wouldn t order this again). Fajitas came with fresh pico de gallo, refried beans and a generous portion of guacamole. My breakfast was slow getting to the table, so they gave me a piece of flan to go ..which was not necessary but appreciated. Overall food and service were great!! Definitely going back!! Parking: Not many spots as it s shared with the gas station next to it. Wheelchair accessibility: Mother in law uses a walker. Not easily accessible because of the parked cars and no ramp.
We love ordering take out from here. Our food is always delicious and ready usually in about 10 minutes. One of these days we will have to eat in. Super cute place and the staff are so nice!

The BEST authentic Mexican food Ive ever had. The BEST restaurant service Ive ever had. The BEST horchata Ive ever had. The server went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. This is my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant!!! Kid-friendliness: The owner got my young kids water in to go cups without even asking, so they wouldnt get it all over them, and interacted with them so nicely. He brought out small kids plates for them without me having to ask either. I was very impressed.
Man I tell you this place is awesome. The family that run it are just beautiful people. Taco salad is great. Tacos are great. I cant remember what its called but it comes to your table sizzling on a hot pan, soooo cool and tasty. Parking is a little awkward but so worth it! Enjoy.

Mehhh nothing special. Mid Pros: The atmosphere was nice and it had an authentic feel. The server was friendly and patient with our big table. The entre itself tasted ok. Cons; Severely disappointed in the nacho dish. Had we not ordered an appy we would have left hungry as the portions were small.
This little spot has the most authentic Mexican food on the Island. The family that owns / runs it is always delightful, and the food is phenomenal. Not to mention the portions are super generous (1 burrito for me is 2 meals!) They 100% are the real deal.

Best mexican food i ve ever had outside of Mexico. Had the #1 crispy taco plate beef & the #8 al pastor plate. The portion sizes were great for the price & the food was delicious.
Came in for 20$ all you can eat tacos on Saturday. Meat and toppings were fresh. They make a killer hot sauce. Love the atmosphere inside. Definitely a hidden gem. Would recommend!

Saying Jalapeño s is a hidden gem is an understatement. They re tucked away next to a gas station in a tiny building a little off the beaten path. But if you enjoy authentic Mexican food and find yourself in Nanaimo, make them one of your stops. The restaurant is cute and very reminiscent of diners in Mexico, with knick-knacks on the walls, tables draped with colourful tablecloths, and light Spanish tunes playing in the background. The staff is friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. The food? Hot, fresh, full of authentic flavour, and priced nicely. Try the enchiladas rancheras. You won t regret it. I come to the Island from time to time for work and find always find it difficult to locate decent eats. I m so happy I was introduced to Jalapeño s my new favourite place to go. Oct 10, 2023: I had the rare opportunity to come back to Nanaimo so soon after my last visit, so I made my way up to Jalapeños again. I ordered two burritos (carne asada (steak) and carnitas (pulled pork) with cheese. I loved both, but I m absolutely in love with the carne asada. I m hooked and will be back the next time I m in town.

Finally got to try the Birria taco special and it did not disappoint. Tender meat and a super flavourful dipping sauce. Service was friendly and efficient as always. One of the few places in town that ALWAYS meets or exceeds our expectations.

This is a great spot tucked beside the gas station. Was recommend by a friend to try them out and wasn t disappointed. Service was great, you can tell it s a family owned and operated business with a charming mexican feel. Most patrons were dining on the buffet, which looked very appealing. Lots of traditional menu items. Food was hot, meat was cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back and recommend this spot to others :)

My partner had the taco bar and he loved it. I ordered something small, a veggie burrito was recommended, as I wasnt that hungry, but it was still a large portion. Food was delicious and quick. Great service as well! Food
My go-to mexican restaurant in town. The burrito tex-mex is great, and idk why but i cant get enough of the refried beans, extremely fast service aswell
