2313 Yellow Point Rd, Nanaimo, BC V9X 1W5, Canada
English Pub Licensed for guests 19 and older.
Found this olace on Google, and it was in the top 10 restaurants. It belongs on the top. It may be out of the, but it sure was busy. Watching the staff work was amazing, polite, organized, efficient, and friendly. My only disappointment is that we don't live closer. It is an excellent English Pub.
This place is awesome. Forget about your dependency on fries (they don't have em) and let Crow and Gate lead you to tasty pastures. All the sandwiches are great, but DO NOT miss the baked brie or smoked salmon chowder. Sausage rolls are made in house (sold out before we could try). Honestly, if they did fries they'd be too powerful. The atmosphere inside is like a real British pub in the country. Outside is a gorgeous garden which is dog friendly in the warmer months. Cheers to you, Crow and Gate.
I went to this place because I was on a mini trip with my friend and the place had a lot of reviews. It's not a place that's on the side of the road but it seemed to be a place for locals. The place is beautiful! It has a tavern atmosphere, decorated with a lot of style. On the menu everything sounds delicious so we asked the waiter who served us for recommendations and he was not wrong, I probably ate the best burger of my life. It was juicy and tasty, very well prepared. The atmosphere is very familiar, calm and cozy. It is a recommended place, in my opinion, for groups of friends or families. If I go back to those places, I will go without a doubt.
We were totally shocked by this adorable pub! In what seems like the middle of nowhere pops up this driveway that takes you to the beautiful property of Crow & Gate Pub. The atmosphere was incredible— English style pub, very cozy and with adorable tacky decor. The staff was incredible— our server Blair made the experience that much better. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and incredibly friendly. Thank you so much, Blair!! Last but not least, the food. We ordered the Mac and cheese, beef dip, grilled cheese on a gluten free bun, and the ploughman board. I thought the Mac and cheese was okay, and I was not crazy about the potato salad. But the board was HUGE and full of yummy snacks, the beef dip was giant and delicious, and the grilled cheese was possibly one of the best we’ve had! I am always a skeptic of gluten free bread, but their HOUSE MADE gluten free buns were even better than regular bread! We had a great experience, and will recommend to anyone we know stopping through Nanaimo.
I came across this pub online and made a note to stop here. Boy are we glad we did. The drive off the beaten path was well worth it. At first impression it felt like an event venue, with beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens. The exterior of each building on the property matched each other. The outside is really lovely. We arrived at 5:20 pm without a reservation on a Tuesday and were able to get seated quickly. The interior feels cozy with low ceilings and dark decor. Even though it's cozy, there were plenty of tables inside (and outside as well). We especially like seeing non-alcoholic brews listed right on the menu. We had the steak and mushroom pue and seafood cakes. The pie was outstanding, full of flavor and tasted really well made. The seafood cakes were very good as well. I'd return to Vancouver Is. just to eat here!
I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant. The service was sluggish from the start: it took an unreasonably long time to place our initial drink order, and the additional drinks we requested never arrived before we finished our meal—quite surprising for a bar. The server's approach was less than attentive; she checked on us only once right after the food arrived (we just started grabbing our cutlery), and thereafter we didn’t see much of her. As for the food, it fell short of expectations. The bangers and mash featured sausages with an unpleasant gammy odor and an overwhelming rosemary flavor, while the mashed potatoes were dry. Note that this dish does not comes with accompanying green salads. The salmon chowder was also disappointing, being overly watery and lacking depth. Overall, the experience was far from satisfactory.
Beautiful, really beautiful patio and area. Solid drink selection. The food is good, not great, although I will say the smoked salmon chowder is among the best I've had. But, a really serene place to lounge, have a few drinks, and enjoy the weather
Cute little English pub a short detour off the main highway. Wasn't sure what the hype was based on Google reviews but after arriving, I knew we had made the right decision! Beautiful grounds, authentic pub feels and gorgeous gardens. Super relaxing to have lunch in the garden patio. Walked in around 1pm and was seated immediately at a high top table outside. Others were waitlisted for regular patio tables. Note it's a 19+ only establishment. We ordered the bangers and Mash and the steak pie. Both delicious with a heaping serving of mash and topped with gravy.
The best pub on the island by far! Cozy fire in the pub and great Guinness pours. Steak and mushroom pie was amazing!
The food is good and consistent but its nothing to write home about. What keeps me going back is the atmosphere and the ice cold beer.
Today we went to the pub. Really busy and teaming with warmth, a great fire and wonderful food. The young woman serving our table was Becca and she didnt miss a beat. A burst of sunshine and very capable keeping each of her tables well served. Yes and she is very beautiful as well. All in one package. Thanks for a wonderful experience. Fraser Farquhar
Amazing service and food, the atmosphere was cozy and inviting along with the heart meals that kept you wanting to stay longer.
We had a family lunch here recently with about 6 of us. The service was wonderful and attentive without being intrusive. We talked a lot and drank mostly water but the food was wonderful all around. I had the Chicken Pot pie, and the top was crispy pastry and filling was good. It was a lovely drive to get there. Worth the trip.
Was so good! The fireplaces were great too!
I had the shrimp sandwich and it was delicious. There were 5 of us and we all had something different and everyone enjoyed their meal. My husband chooses the chowder everytime. Our waiter was very nice and friendly and they went over and beyond to accommodate my wheelchair.
Superb. The food, the atmosphere and gardens are a must experience. I cannot imagine being disappointed.
In a place like this! Its in a place youd expect, but the food and alcohol (especially beer!) are amazing.
We have been coming here for more than a decade and it is consistently great. Love the new outdoor area. The crab cakes and salad are my usual meal and my husband loves the beef dip.
Mack is a very sweet server! She caught onto our crazy sense of humour and made lots of laughs. Unfortunately, our burgers were on the dry side. However, the drinks were very good! A great family dinner. Thank You Mack!!
Used to be good pre COVID. Now, its a nice pub, but its lost its charm.
Amazing food!!!! Loved the atmosphere and the service was superb as well! Highly recommend this hidden gem. Their fisherman s stew was the special and was sooo good! Their grilled cheese sandwich was out of this world as well!
Wonderful cozy Pub with great food.
Absolutely perfect.
Sunday roast beef dinner with pecan pie for dessert. Perfect.
Beautiful dining area, decent portions of decent quality food. Leans on slight modernization of english classics, to qualified success.
My wife and I always make a stop at crow and gate whenever we are driving up island. We had a friend with us today visiting from the east coast so we had to bring her to see how amazing this place is. Becca was our server and she is an absolute gem! Amazing service and beautiful personality. The manager at the time was Jen, and she made a point of coming to our table to make sure that everything was to our expectations which it was of course, as well as saying hi to our pup. Thank you Becca and Jen and the rest of the staff :)
Always a great meal and a nice atmosphere
I didnt know that it was a pub so only people over 19 could enter, so I visited and just looked around. The interior was nice and I liked the outdoor seating so much that I had to come back thinking I would definitely go back.
My only go to place on the island until recently but they are changing the menu. The steak and mushroom pie was my selection 9 times out of 10. It was moist and fresh with a nice pastry topping and served with salad and their signature dressing. Now it is tough and dry dumped on mashed potatoes which are nothing more than a filler to compensate for the higher price. Most unappealing, I wouldn t order this again and wouldn t recommend it to anyone! I would gladly pay the current price for the old version.
awesome food
Cozy spot with a lovely back garden on a sunny day!
Lovely little pub.
Delicious food! Great atmosphere and super friendly staff. Stunning garden.
Lovely way to go to a rural English pub without having to board a plane. Great service and atmosphere.
Classy place
Ha ha this place has been around since the beginning of time sticking with a winning formula and in a beautiful setting.
A great Tudor style English pub experience. The steak and mushroom pie was amazing and Hoyne Dark Matter beer is incredible.
Just like being in a British pub. Exceptional.
A favourite.
Best fish soup Ive ever had.
This was an enchanting beautiful garden setting. The service and food was excellent. I will go back.
Ate outside with great service and the food was very good. Have a Guinness and a Grilled Cheese sandwich!
Loved everything about this place Parking: Wasn t overly busy as we were there late evening. Parking was available Food : 5/5 |
Wen visiting the Island, must to go to place. Close to Ladysmith. We personally, allways stop when there.
Been awhile since Ive been there. Changed the menu a bit, but the food was still very good with a great variety of beers to choose from. Would be nice to have a better variety of ciders though. Always a great stop while in the area on a sunny day.
An amazing place to grab lunch or dinner with friends and family. We went on Labour Day so there was a bit of a wait for the patio seating. But there are so many chairs for people to relax and wait till they are called on. Beer prices were very cheap compared to Vancouver pubs and the food was amazing. Would recommend everyone visiting Nanaimo to try this spot, definitely worth it.
Great server, classic pub. They ran out of what I had ordered, so I had to get a substitute.
All around excellent.
An experience of a visit on a busy bank holiday Monday afternoon . The four of us arrived at about 1315 looking forward to an authentic English pub experience. On arrival, we were told it was a 45 minute wait for a table. Asked if we could get a drink whilst we waited - this is not allowed at all. A cursory look inside the pub and onto the outside patio could see a large number of completely empty tables. We were in a surreal busy English pub where most of the tables inside were completely empty and only a few souls were drinking. This enhanced by a 45 minute queueing system in the waiting garden . Surrounding the pub is a lovely manicured English country lawned waiting garden. With a few single seats scattered around. This garden is exclusively for customers to spend time waiting for a table in the pub to become available. Of course it is not possible to take drinks from the pub into this waiting garden. We did find out that there is one single bench inside the pub that fits three people. This seems to be reserved for customers bold enough to enter the pub to wait for a table and actually order drinks at the bar. Three of you (of a party of four) can sit comfortably consuming your drinks whilst watching the empty tables. After 45 minutes eventually we were led to a section of the pub that was completely empty and devoid of any atmosphere. We were allowed to sit at one of the empty tables specially chosen for us. Ironically from this table we could observe hoards of people sat on the lawn in the waiting garden amusing themselves by playing cards and other games - without a drink in sight. We were told the empty tables inside and many outside on the patio were kept to reduce the pressure on the kitchen. No one seemed to consider the option of asking if anyone wanted to have a drink whilst waiting for their turn for the food order. This pub wouldn t survive 10 minutes in England - we have things called beer gardens and allow customers to make decisions for themselves. Beer and food when we got it were extremely good. Crazy management.
Boring, no ambiance, no TVs, no entertainment and a very limited menu. The history and a lovely charming setting but thats about it. Food
Hidden Gem, if youre in the Island make sure you check this place out. You wont be disappointed
Busy country style pub and lunch stop for us. No more then a 20 minute wait, but well worth it. Excellent service, great food and enjoyed the country atmosphere. Food
Very lovely not too busy today.
Great food and service! A beautiful patio and gardens, although it was raining when we visited. The pub inside was warm and cozy!
Great outsider area
Jolly good mate. Top of the table.
You have to check this place out..! Old style English Pub! And the outdoor space is super lovely! Food is good too!
Even better in person. Flawless.
A lovely property; the pub itself is very dim. It wasnt busy when we were there so our food arrived quickly. Prices are on the higher side $25/entree.
Great food fantastic atmosphere and the service was wonderful thanks
Nicest pub on the island. Vegetarian options: Not bad for vegetarian. Three or four options. Would recommend the ploughmans plate. Food : 5/5 |
This is an amazing place, the outside seating in the garden was amazing, food was top shelf and cold beer! Will go back again soon.
Been to the Crow & Gate a few times now and the experience is never a disappointment. Kayla was our server, and the amazing patience & grace of this woman is otherworldly! Not only was she right there any time we needed anything, but she somehow managed to balance this with the training of a new server. Honestly, if Kayla isn t our server, I d ve just got take out and gone home and tried again another time. The new patio is great and the gardens are beautiful, but pale in comparison to Kayla s glowing smile. She was so nice that I m sure if given the chance she could bring Peace to the Middle East.
Beautiful space with patio that allows dogs. Surrounded with greenery, flowers and gorgeous trees. The food is great and the place is THE spot for date night, or Day time date!
Food was amazing, gardens were beautiful. Server was surly and rude. Wouldn t go back just because the server was so terrible.
Lovely outdoor dog-friendly seating area, beautifully landscaped gardens, great selection of pub food.
Oh My Gosh! So glad our friends brought us here. It is off the beaten path. Absolutely beautiful. For a Tuesday afternoon, the pace was packed. Food was great and so was the service.
Love the food, service and atmosphere and great you can sit comfortably outside
Excellent ambiance, service, and price point. Will visit again. A true gem of Cedar.
We had a great time at the pub-they have changed up the outside area since I was last there and it looks so great! We went mid afternoon with some friends and all the food was perfect but mine-I ordered the potato bacon jalepeno soup looking forward to a little kick of spice but holy smokes it was hot-too hot! There was 1/2 cup of jalapeños at the bottom when I had eaten what I could!! I prob should have thought about it English pub maybe not the best place to risk eating spicy jalapeños!!The other dishes were great-and the service and surroundings were wonderful. Can t wait to go back again some time soon. Wheelchair accessibility: There are wheel chair spots available and lots of parking.
We stopped in for a quick lunch after arriving in Nanaimo. I had the Scotch Egg and a bowl of Tomato Basil soup. Delicious pub food in a really quaint environment that reminds me of The Angel Inn in Niagara on The Lake. Overall will definitely return
Worst service ever. I was by myself so maybe that was why? Listening in to other tables the wait staff introduced themselves, engaged in a little small talk, relayed the soup of the day... My waitress walked up and said, what can I bring you. Thats it. Okay... So I ordered and then waited, and waited, and waited. It was really busy so thats fine. But not once did she stop in and refill my water, or ask me if I wanted something else to drink. I was literally sitting 6 from the bar so she walked past all the time and avoided looking my way. She sat there chatting with some guy sitting there and ignored me completely. Finally the waitress for the table beside me asked me if I would like more water when she refilled their beers. Then my food finally came and the burger was dried out and burnt. Another girl came and got my plate and asked me if I would like anything else and I asked for my bill. A half an hour later I just got up and paid at the bar. I was in a highly visible place, but felt utterly invisible. Horrible service.
Great food, loved the presentation and the helpings are huge, so bring an appetite. Atmosphere can t be beat, English garden vibes.
Absolutely stunning! Right out of a book! Lovely staff and food. Highly recommend
They really squeezed out an amazing experience for us.
Always beautiful, tranquil, and providing a white glove service to adult clientele. So lovely to sit in a peaceful, non-chaotic environment and enjoy the company of other calm adults! Tried the Publican, amazing burger.
10/10 experience! Everything was so good!
it is a very unique place with great atmosphere.
Kid-friendliness: No kids permitted. Food
Beautiful exterior.
The server didnt want to be there.
Lovely garden to eat in if you can get a spot outside
Such an amazing pub. Patio is gorgeous and the Publican Burger is top notch.
Gorgeous garden and pub and the food is amazing!!!
Vegetarian options: Salad and some wraps Food
Always a favourite, took my daughter and son in law for their first time. Service was great, food was delicious and atmosphere friendly
The garden area is lovely, the food is very tasty. The bar only has wine and beer. There were lots of flies inside, which were really annoying. Pleasant staff.
Came here because they had a vegan option which was good. Non vegan options were plentiful and enjoyed very much.
Sensational, great ambience, great garden, great food and perfectly served beer - I can only recommend it to everyone!!
Beautiful location and awesome food! The seafood cakes are my favourite. Vegetarian options: They can cater to vegan/vegetarian and allergies.
A ver popular pub. Service was a little slow, but it was very busy for a Tuesday night. The atmosphere was great. Very like a large British pub.
This place isnt cheap but its worth it! Some of the best tasting and presented food weve had in Canada. I definitely recommend the pecan pie! Service is very friendly, too. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian and vegan options. Parking: Maybe 30 spots, fills up quickly on hot days and weekends.
Been a couple of times.es, always busy but friendly accommodating staff and the food was very good.
What an unexpected delight! A wonderful period building on a gorgeous estate where you can dine in the yard surrounded by beautiful grounds. The clam chowder was silky deliciousness, followed by seafood cakes that were golden, crispy on the outside, light, fluffy and scrumptious on the inside- even the side salad was next level with a delicious house dressing. The service was friendly and fast!
Great British Pub experience.
Really nice English style pub, it looks traditional on the inside and there is a lot of seating outside too. They have a very nice garden that you are welcome to stroll through. The food was delicious, we had the shrimp butty, the farmers board and the seafood cakes. All of the dishes were great. I highly recommend this pub.
No Minors allowed anywhere on property. If I could suggest something it would be to make the Google maps info blurb include that fact or update your license to allow them. Kid-friendliness: No Minors allowed.
Restaurant not to be missed, a little outside Nanaimo in a magnificent setting (superb gardens), the food is great, and the service perfect. Above all, you must not pass it by. TOP
The food has always been really good, the service is ok, great selection of wine and beer
Ploughmans plate is sooo good! No one else around here makes a good Scotch Egg :) In fact all of their food is excellent. And the pub atmosphere is so cozy, with beautiful grounds surrounding it all.
Great falafel wrap and roast beef butter! Lovely patio and beautiful flowers outside. Lovely pub ambiance and enjoying a Tilt beer. Vegetarian options: Falafel wrap and many salads
You have to know it exists, because its out of the way, but people travel from as far as Victoria for the consistently excellent food and large servings. The beef dip and roast beef dinner complete with Yorkshire pudding are my favs.
Been coming here for years and never been treated so rudely as we were this evening. Will not spend another dollar here.
We had the best experience here. Food was great, service was amazing, and the outside patio in the garden is so beautiful. I can t wait to go back!
Great food, affordable prices, great atmosphere.
Absolutely fabulous. The gardens are stunning, the overall feel of the interior Tudor pub is rich and authentic, and the staff!! The team is cohesive, they re engaging with the diners in an authentic and kind manner, they re looking out for each other and overall are just completely on point. Best service we have had in a long while. And of course - food and drink was excellent, and for those of us who are used to Victoria pricing VERY well priced
Great place to sit and relax on a warm summer day.
Great team, great food, authentic ambience.
Beautiful grounds, flowers all over and trees for shade. Food was amazing, I recommend the Seafood cakes. Food
Absolutely worth stopping by. Whether you sit outside in the garden or inside the experience is great. Good food, good beverages, good service and good prices. Have been coming here since for years and never been disappointed.
Beautiful landscaping! The pond is magical! This pub made me feel like I was actually in England Seriously, the decor is brilliant! The food was excellent!
Food was great! Staff was fantastic and the grounds around the pub were wonderful!
Beautiful garden to walk off your excellent meal. Nice cozy English pub style decor, not too noisy so you can talk easily.
Such a gem. You feel like you are in an old European pub. It has amazing gardens you can explore after your visit. Dogs are allowed in the patio if you get a table where the dog can be on the other side. ( in the garden and not the pub grounds). They have a good selection of non alcoholic beers and drinks!
Dietary restrictions: Had great gluten free options Food
Great beef dip. Would have given 5 stars, but they have no deep fryer, so you cant get fries. Instead, you get a small scoop of potato salad and green salad. Gets super busy if youre not there early for lunch. Great old school English pub but over crowded. People standing around drinking, waiting for tables, and having to share tables with other parties got them a 4 star for the atmosphere for me.
We generally eat in the garden, which is very pleasant. The food is great, with the beef sandwich, beef dip and burgers my favorites.
The atmosphere is amazing, but prices have gone up and portions have gotten smaller. I ordered the farmers plate, three slices of prosciutto, ten crackers, a tiny sliver of cheese, half of a small scotch egg, five mouthfuls of roast beef, no salad, they forgot to bring out the crostini that the menu says is included - for $24 thats pretty rough.
Wonderful food and ambience
It was cold and uncomfortable to sit in. Door was propped open to accommodate staff getting out to overflow customers on patio with no consideration for guests inside. Food was okay but nothing to rave about.
It s upsetting to see they removed the farmers plate from the menu. They have changed it to a farmers board which is a huge downgrade. Once you get used to the portion size of the farmers plate and then next week get served with store bought crackers it s very unappetizing and left me half full for the same high price point. Although the food is good, I believe the farmers board is priced very high for what you get. Pictures are of the Farmers Plate before, and farmers board after.
Vegetarian options: One vegetarian and one vegan option. I had the vegan wrap and it was good. Food
Great roast dinner. Great atmosphere. Amazing wait staff. Highly suggest.
I really enjoy coming to the Crow and Gate pub. It almost feels as if you are on a mini vacation in England. The garden is beautiful, the inside of the pub is cozy (especially in the winter with a fire going). It seems like some of the food has changed since we have started going. It is still delicious, but maybe not as traditional as it used to be. Still highly recommend a visit here! Wheelchair accessibility: Has a separate accessible entrance.
Great food, service not so much
Good food. Make sure to have some extra space for the desserts.
An original pub located on a beautiful landscape with ponds, archways, with killer indoor/outdoor settings topped off with some ridiculously good grub.
2hrs and 15 mins for lunch because server didn t put in our order. No apologies, no discount! Not impressed.
Wheelchair accessible. Incredibly busy even on a weekday. Once you get a table, the service and food are fantastic.
Sitting in their beautiful gardens with a frosty pint and some great food..... perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon!
We loved the gardens and ambience of the Crow & Gate. Remember, this is a pub so customers have to be 19 or older. We felt like we were sitting in Tudor England because that is the style of the interior of the pub. No reservations can be made so get there early. We were there when it opened at 11. By 12:15, there was a five table waiting list. Wheelchair accessibility: Easily accessible for all levels of mobility.
Good food.. gorgeous space outside!
We have been going to the Crow & Gate since 2021 and loved the place for the atmosphere, the delicious food, and the amazing location. I used to order the grilled cheese sandwich with the pickled onions and it was served with an amazing salad with a unique and delicious dressing.Last time we were there, several months ago, the grilled cheese wasnt on their menu any longer so I ordered a delicious vegetarian quiche. We went for dinner at the Crow & Gate last Thursday, and I was pleased to see the grilled cheese sandwich back on the menu..but the price was unreal! $24 for a grilled cheese sandwich and a salad! My husband ordered a burger, and the price was $ 21. How can a grilled cheese sandwich cost more than a burger? I understand that everything is more expensive...but come on!I decided to order a Spicy Falafel wrap for $19,that was delicious. But I cant believe the prices on the menu!Unbelievable! The service was ok but they never refilled my drink (water) and our friend (ice tea)..my husband had a pint for 7$...I dont see us going back..
Full marks. 10 out 10. No further notes. Olde English style pub, small but perfect menu. If your in the area its an absolute must.
Always a wonderful experience . Good food unbeatable ambience.
Great place to go for lunch or dinner. Nice variety of English food with something for everyone.
English pub with super cozy interiors!
Great food, beautiful location
The Reuben and the Steak and Ale Pot Pie were both winners! If its warm enough, Id highly recommend sitting outside. The garden is beautiful!
Excellent food and service. Bit busy.
Great atmosphere. Service great and food is your basic pub fare. The beef dip sandwich was very good. Only complaint is that the chowder is more of a broth with very little substance. Definitely don t recommend for a meal.
An adventure worth taking. A great pub that feels like a paradise in the middle of nowhere. The food is excellent.
This place was recommended to us by a local in Ladysmith. Its a real out of the way hidden gem of an old English Pub. The food was fabulous and the service was second to none. I would highly recommend this place if you are ever in the area!!! Just a special call out to Rachel who helped us decide on our food choices!!! Looking forward to our next visit!!
Beautiful location, very nice atmosphere, and wonderful service. I m usually the type of person to finish my food even if I don t like it, but this was the first time I ve ever sent a dish back to the kitchen. My burger was burnt and incredibly dry, and I was very disappointed.
Came here on recommendation from a local and wow i was not disappointed! home-style cooked meals exactly what i was looking for. The beef pot pie was amazing. It was very busy and there was a bit of a wait time. But worth it
Great place
Have the grilled cheese. It is life changing!!!
Service was amazing and it was a full house. We can t wait to come back
Was there a few months ago service was excellent, and its a beautiful setting. However disappointed in my glass of wine seemed like it was very weak and watered down. Food was good .
Great local country pub with wholesome meals and cozy atmosphere
Got lucky and avoided the usual line up to get in. Great beer and a great Publican burger.
Never been disappointed here.
Excellent place as always. 3rd visit and just as good as the first time. Thanks
We didnt eat, but the house cider is great! Lovely, authentic place. The owner is living the dream.
The perfect pub complete with beautiful outdoor and indoor settings. Cozy fireplaces enhance the relaxing ambiance especially on chilly days or nights. The food is equally good. It was a good size Rueben sandwich that I enjoyed and the best I ve had in years. Awesome and plentiful beers on tap.
