Hungry Rooster in Nanaimo

I was waiting in line next-door at subway when I realized that there was a pierogi place next door. Best decision I made all day! The staff were courteous and friendly, and the pierogies, onions, and especially the coleslaw were delicious! I ate up every bit of the food on my plate. The pierogies are made locally and I highly recommend.

Amazing food and wonderful customer service! Was just on a hike and this was a perfect recharge!

Coming from a Polish household being use to home made perogies, this place has the best store bought perogies out of all options in Nanaimo. 10/10.

I am a perogie lover and these are hands down one of the best perogie I have ever tasted, absolutely amazing.

The vegan perogies were very good but way too expensive for us to buy them again. 10$ for 8 perogies in a bag is a ridiculous price for frozen perogies.

Great perogies, and lovely staff. Hot, fast, and delightful. A great little pit stop too of you want to take some frozen perogies home. Cant wait to come back!

Gem of a place serving homemade pierogies. I got a decent sized platter with 7 chedder cheese and potatoe friends, a generous dollop of sour cream, sweet grilled onions, a delicious tangy cole slaw and a sprinkle of crispy bacon. My eyes were bigger than my appetite but I couldn t leave any friends behind. Small seating area inside and out and super friendly owners.

Amazing. Will be back next time I visit Nanaimo.

Service was excellent, but the food was lacking flavour. Ordered a couple rooster combos for the wife and I, and both of us had the exact same thoughts about it.

Tuesday afternoon at 430, website says theyre open so I go to pick some dinner up. Get there and they are all closed up. This isnt the first time it has happened but it is the last time Ill try to support them!

This is a review for vegans! I am grateful they offer two vegan perogy options here. They are both delicious and you can really tell theyre made with love and tradition. None of the full meals are vegan, so I would recommend getting the 4 perogies for $5, with onions! Or take a frozen bag home for around $14. :)

My family and I enjoyed borscht, perogies, and mexikanka. Felt like home. Vegetarian options: Borscht, perogies and other dishes. Parking: There is parking in front of the building. Kid-friendliness: Desk and stools for kids. Wheelchair accessibility: First floor, no stair.

Fabulous perogies! I love this place for lunch and the frozen perogies are great to take home for dinner too! They have some groceries that are hard to find elsewhere too

Absolutely obsessed. If there s one thing I could eat everyday it s these perogies! The quality and consistency is always there. The customer service is says amazing! Never once have I been disappointed. I order takeout from here probably once a week and it still taste amazing delivered! Top 5 Favourite places in Nanaimo!

I finally decided to check this place out. I had seen it a few times while driving by. I went with the Perogy grilled cheese sandwich, slaw and coke. With a $1.50 tip my order came to $17 and change. The sandwich was good, quality ingredients, the only drawback was that the onions are cut way too thick for my liking and they dominate the flavor. I was surprised on how good the slaw was, very bright and fresh. Paying $17 for this decent lunch seems a bit high but Im noticing that all the restaurants in Nanaimo are overpriced. I may return for another meal but I would rather get a steak sandwich somewhere for that price.

Not a supermarket style mass produced dough ball of a pierogi, these are hand crafted delicious perogies. Served with some cabbage slaw with an original tangy dressing. The dressing and frozen pierogies are available for sale to enjoy in your own home. Check out the Hungry Rooster for lunch or dinner.

Delicious large portions. Come for the perogies, stay for the cabbage slaw! Not a good place to eat in but if you want comfort food to go its excellent

Hands down one of the best meals I ve ever had. The food here is incredible!

I highly recommend eating here, Kim was very friendly with us and gave us great service! The pierogies were very tasty and had been been cooked to perfection. The grilled cheese sandwich was also very good when paired with their own house made coleslaw. We will be back!

The Slap Down is worth going out of your way for! It s an excellent grilled cheese and perogy sandwich. Definitely one of the best spots to eat in Nanaimo.

I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was here. My husband and I both got the Slap Down and it was so fresh and full of flavour. The coleslaw was also really good and flavourful. Highly recommend trying this place out, you won t be disappointed!

Have both ordered ready-to-eat as well as purchased there frozen products. Their perogies are very good with a great variety. Been here often and will continue to do so.

I ordered food through skip and was missing literally 3/4 of the food I payed for and what I did get wasn t ever made how I asked and I had to deal with skip witch was a nightmare and I got a delivery fee refunded and that s it so out of a 55$ order with most of it missing and what I did get was wrong I got 5$ refunded so most of the family memebers I had over for the holidays didn t end up getting food after travelling all day to get here so thanks a lot for the this place is trash don t waste your time

People typically have different ideas of how traditional dishes are supposed to taste. In my opinion, this place got it spot on! Ma would approve the borscht with minimal criticism ;)

The price was on point, and the meal was excellent. The perogies were the best Ive ever had, the meal filling. The coleslaw was so good that even my husband (who doesnt usually like it eat coleslaw) ate it all and commented on how tasty it was! Truly recommend for a different but incredibly tasty purchased meal, and we will for sure be going back for both fresh and the take home frozen perogies!

Another Nanaimo hidden gem. Great perogi! Tiny little store front but dont let that dissuade you. This place should have line ups out the door and around the building. The staff are always super friendly.

Had their borscht for lunch today, and it was delicious! Its vegan too, if you omit the sour cream. And they had 2 types of vegan pierogi in their freezer section, which Im so excited to try! They also carry some polish market items, like wawel chocolate and krowki candies :)

Great portion sizes and the food was amazing. The compostable cutlery was nice to see as well. I highly recommend eating here I had the food delivered so I can only imagine it would be even better in the restaurant.

This place is a hidden gem for sure. After a heavy lifting day at the gym on a cheat day, I was looking for something quick and filling with lots of carbs so I researched this place is heard about. D dropped in. Their Slapdown sandwich, a perogie-stuffed grilled cheese monstrosity, is absolutely loaded with flavour as is the generous serving of slaw its served with. You can add four extra perogies to any plate for a few bucks extra and their borscht is next level. The owner is a sweet older Polish lady with a great attitude and a beaming smile. All in all it was one of the easiest five stars Ive ever given.

This review is for the hungry rooster food truck. I caught them in invermere BC. I ordered the combo and everything was delicious. The staff were friendly and service was prompt. They had an area by the truck to sit down and enjoy your food. Hopefully I can check out the full restaurant in the future!

Great traditional Ukrainian perogies with a twist of Mexican. Gourmet meals prepared for you to eat in or take out. Fresh frozen perogies and borscht is available to take home and cook or warm up for yourself. Ive always had a good experience here with staff and the quality of food preparation is always extremely high. Give it a try or you are missing out! Vegetarian options available too

Best perogies around

Food is phenomenal! The cottage cheese, potato, and dill pierogies taste just like my grandma would make. It s a good spot for some good comfort food. However, service is subpar at best with very minimal interaction with customers. The lady actually left the building while we were waiting for our food to be made and sat out in some car chatting with someone. For take out, this place is wonderful or if you d like to make them in the comfort of your own home, just buy a bag of the frozen ones they sell. But I wouldn t sit and eat in there.

Stopped by for a quick takeout lunch as its near home. I got the slapdown sandwich (like a grilled cheese, but with cheese pierogies and bacon and onions) and a side of coleslaw and a few meat (pork and beef) pierogies. The sandwich was pretty good, very filling, though the bread was a bit greasy (yes, its a grilled cheese, I know that, but it felt like there was a little too much.) The pierogies were fine but not super flavourful or unique. They were a bit overdone so I got more burned flavour than id like. The coleslaw is great and their dressing has some real bite. The meal was about $15 with tax, and while Im not sure Im rushing back for lunch anytime soon, some of their frozen pierogies do jump out at me as a possibility for dinner someday!

Always hot good friendly service and you get exactly what you order and what it states on the menu. The food comes quick and hot which is important when Im grabbing lunch on the go.

Hungry Rooster was a delightful surprise to find here in Nanaimo, BC. My Grandmother used to make everything they do and I must say that tasting their food takes me back to my childhood in a wonderful way. They also put a modern spin on these old classic dishes, which is something I always love to see. They do mostly take out business, but you can eat there. They also have a well stocked freezer full of all sorts of perogies and yummy vegetable borscht to take home and enjoy later. It is run by very nice people and is reasonably priced for good, solid homemade Polish awesomeness.

Also definitely recommend the slap down. The people who work there are also super kind and awesome, the only part that sucks is that theyre never open really late for dinner.

You havent had perogies until youve tried these perogies. You have options theres cheddar,Cottage,Spinach fetta,Musshroom Sourkraut and Beef and pork . The staff are absolutely great they will acomadate any requests on how you like your meal prepared and allways have time to personalize your dining experience at the hungry rooster kitchen .
