I was here for lunch with my dad a couple weeks ago and a business lunch yesterday and both times I had the Modern Salad with Chicken Supreme. It was delicious- the kind of meal you d happily start again as soon as you d finished because it was so enjoyable- not that I was left hungry, it was plenty of food. Great space for a quiet business meeting too, we tucked into the front window table and had the space and privacy for discussions. Thanks for hosting us!

They were able to accommodate a large group of us on a team building event for work very last minute after another downtown Nanaimo restaurant messed up our reservations. The staff were wonderful, the food was great, and they had good options for our different dietary restrictions.

We are visiting from Montana and wandered into this magical resteraunt. The food, service, and atmosphere are wonderful. And, Grace took the time to recommmend some not to be missed adventures on beautiful Vancouver Island. Love, love, love

My expectations were low going in and somehow I was still disappointed. We were the first of 5 tables sat around 3pm on a Saturday and were somehow forgotten about. I was looking forward to a quick bite after a hike but it turned out to be 90 min to get a sandwich and soup. The beef brisket was so dry and flavorless it was impressive. The jalapeños were the only flavor in the whole sandwich. The Mac n cheese was as depressing as it was greasy. Would not even go back if I was double dog dared.

The service and ambience were okay, but unfortunately the food wasnt particularly great in our opinion. Little taste or nothing that particularly stood out. Okay for simple hunger.

Stumbled upon this pance while on a day trip from Courtenay. So good!!! The menu is amazing with so many delicious options. The service was spot-on and the atmosphere was very cozy, modern and welcoming. I had the Ahi Tuna burger and it was perfect. Paired exceptionally well with the frosty Sapporo draft. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a quality meal and great atmosphere.

Popped in for drinks and dessert. Love the Nanaimo bartini. The bartender was super friendly. We also had yummy chocolate cake.

Went for brunch as the previous reviews looked good and was very disappointed. I found an overly complicated brunch menu, no waffles or pancakes no traditional eggs Benny, a brunch menu with no strip/crispy bacon? Ordered the roasted tomato and avocado Benny, the menu said smashed avocado, I received a piece of toast covered with guacamole which made the toast soggy and the tomatoes were definitely not cooked in anyway. I am a bit of a foodie and not familiar with the area so this was a gamble. Partner got the special of French toast and was also very disappointed. The server was lovely, food was real bad.

This is truly an exceptional restaurant. My wife was in heaven with the roasted halibut and my lasagna rivalled any that Ive eaten. Our server was delightful and a brief visit with the kitchen staff confirmed that they are committed to serving quality cuisine.

I really want to love this restaurant. I have been coming to the Modern since I was a kid and expected good things from the new ownership as their other cafe is excellent. We made reservations to celebrate a friends birth day last week. When we got there, I was The updated decor is on point. Well-staffed. I was looking forward to a great dining experience. I ordered a lemonade - it was not good - it seemed like it was just lemon juice with a bit of water. I had to ask for some simple syrup and more water to make it drinkable. Menu choices seemed interesting, but unfortunately my meal (lasagna) was cold. The weird thing was that another person in our party also ordered lasagna and it was not cold. The waitress took it away for a remake but when I got the replacement, it was again cold. By this time, everyone else was almost finished eating and I still hadnt even started. The server suggested a salad, so I asked for a salad with chicken. I guess ordering chicken on it was a mistake, as it seemed to take a very long time for preparation. By the time the salad came, everyone was done and I was still waiting to eat. I was so disappointed to see that the salad greens had not been rinsed properly and there was actual dirt on some pieces. As I was famished by this point, and all my friends had finished eating, I picked through the salad and ate the decent bits. It is difficult to eat a salad when you have to examine each piece of lettuce before you eat it. To sum it up: Strange (incorrectly-made) drink, 2 plates of cold lasagna, and a salad with dirt in it. This was my experience with the newest version of the Modern Cafe. Meal was comped, the server was very sweet and apologized, but I would have expected the manager to make an appearance at some point. That did not happen. I hate to say it, but I will not recommend the Modern Cafe anymore. I really wanted to like it here. What a disappointment.

Dropped in during a Canada Day weekend. Service was truly exceptional and the food creative and delicious. There may have been drinkipoos involved too while listening to music from the 90s. Definitely will be back!

I had an unfortunate experience with the cafe. There was no accommodation what s so over. We had a party of 13 and was fine with splitting into smaller groups. The staff just straight up said NO. Very very very unprofessional and no accommodation at all. Bar was completely empty as well so couldn t even accommodate some of us. Please train staff to be more accommodating

I had a party of 13 people and the manager refused to accommodate us because we were such a huge group. It s unfortunate that they didn t even consider splitting us up or finding alternatives to accommodate. Their bar was also completely empty, which was a surprise because we thought we would at least sit in that area. Maybe next time, think about how you can improve your service .

We got denied service right away as soon as we walked in. There were some table open, however, we weren t given a wait time at all.

Walked into restaurant for lunch with my friends this afternoon. The hostess and manager looked at our group and immediately said they cannot accommodate us. They provided no explanation for turning us away. If the restaurant was full, we would have appreciated them giving us an approximate wait time rather than simply saying no - it came across as rude and disrespectful, and I hope this restaurant trains its staff to treat potential customers more courteously in the future.

The manager just shook his head at us to deny our group. Very rude.

We had a large group that really wanted to try this place but was disappointed with the service as we were denied a table even after explaining to the hostess that we are okay to split up and wait for a table. Still we were rejected with no formal explanation and accommodation.

It was a tourist trap. It was my first time visiting Nanaimo. In every search, it shows up as a must-go place in Nanaimo, but it literally is not worth it.

I really like this place! I was in a few days ago, and even though there was a giant rush going on my server still made sure I was looked after, even though I was a table by myself out of the way. He was lovely!

Unfortunately this place has gone down hill again. We arrived (3 of us) and it took the waitress about 15 minutes to come over and take our order. It was a Monday night and only 2 other tables there at the time. I asked a few questions about the menu as Im on a limited diet right now and she wasnt able to answer any of the questions. She did at one point try to convince me brussel sprouts are the same as broccoli, that was interesting. We ordered our drinks and food at the same time as it took so long just to get our orders in. Our food showed up BEFORE our drinks. Good news is the food was good. Then our drinks came. My friend ordered a margarita and it was literally 2 ounces of tequila in a cup (wrong glassware so I knew something was up). She tried to tell me this was right to which I replied, sorry Im calling you out-that is not a margarita and we wont accept this for $14. She then admitted she made it and never mixed a drink before. She took it back and had the bartender remake it and it wàs good then. once eating, she never came by to refill our waters or ask how everything was tasting. I dont care how good the kitchen is if the front of the house is a disaster. I will not be support this local Establishment again.

The layout and atmosphere was very pleasant. I really enjoyed my cocktails, try the gin fizz and you wont be disappointed. The bbq duck flatbread was delicious. Very pleased with my experience

Bad experience. We ate there, the salmon had no flavor. We ordered a lasagna to go, and it was too sour, the pasta overcooked, no flavor. We know now where dont go to eat next time.

Under new owners so gave it a try again. Food was good, service was great, friendly and in good time. Had the bacon jam burger and cup of chowder. Both were good. Would have liked more bacon jam though. Other than that it was a great place to meet friends and catch up.

Wow. Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, and the best all around service. My partner and I hate here tonight, I had the special (the steak was done PERFECTLY) and my partner had the seafood trio. Both dishes were cooked to perfection. Not only that, but the drink that my partner ordered was positively beautiful and my waiter picked out the perfect red to pair with my meal. Huge shout out to the kitchen and the wait staff tonight. If you want to have a nice date night where the staff actually like to engage with you, go here!

We shared the Chili Chicken bites. The drinks and wine good. I had the seafood trio with basmati rice, broccollini, and orange beets. It was Great. The Smash burger, fries, and Lobster bisque were really good, too. The chocolate Ganache cake finished the evening beautifully.

Great food, service and atmosphere. We came here on a quiet Tuesday night with about 20 people. The lobster nachos and grilled brussel sprouts were yummy. I wouldnt get the scallop appy again - too small and rubbery. Most of us went for the prime rib special and were not disappointed. The servers handled our orders well, especially for such a large group. We all had a great time at the Modern Cafe in Nanaimo.

Came here after having a not so good experience at another restaurant nearby, and was very happy to find the service here was awesome, we were greeted immediately and checked in every few minutes, food came super fast and was delicious! :)

Like so many places in Canada, we have learned to accept untained service staff. Since Covid, managers are doing the best they can with the staff they have. Our waitress didnt know the specials or what was on tap and didnt acknowledge us as we were leaving. Maybe hospitality will never get back to where it once was. The food was what we expected after reading other reviews and the space has so much unrealized potential.

I have an 8 year old with celiac disease. A server told me for sure there were safe options and that her mom is celiac so she understands. I asked over and over about everything and was promised it was gluten free. I wanted to go to the kitchen to watch them put the gluten free pasta in the pot but thought the staff wouldn t appreciate it. I wish I did. I had a bite of it and it tasted like gluten but again I had asked so many times. 20 minutes later I am with my daughter in the parking lot puking her guts out literally. When she has had gluten she throws up until it s bloody pieces of her gastric lining. This hasn t happened in a couple of years because I am so careful. We arrived from Vancouver with bags of gluten free food and from our gluten free home- this was the first restaurant we went to here

For any previous regulars you should know Modern is now under new ownership. Sadly the food quality was not to the previous standard. Right away from new menu design could sense something was different! The French fries were tiny little things, salad was a bit weak mostly greens with under seasoned salad dressing. Just don t expect the same quality. Service staff were all new and doing their best given the changes. Wish them all the best!

We were visiting Nanaimo and doing the Nanaimo Bar Trail. We d heard The Modern Cafe did Nanaimo Bar Martinis so we ducked into this place. We were not disappointed! Amazing (sugary) twist on an espresso martini, super friendly staff and an amazing atmosphere. The cafe also does a Nanaimo Bar cheesecake defo worth a visit!

Over a year ago you were told your vegan assortment was a great thing for Nanaimo. The problem then and still is the food falls way short on taste. Ive been eating vegan for years. You need your chef to visit your competitors and see what I mean. Two doors away is killing you.

A very cute cafe / restaurant in Nanaimo . Super modern interior and really nice hosts, we were greeted by a guy in a red flannel and accent who was super lovely and let us chose our table! I was able to order pasta even though that s a dinner item and we came at lunch service was super quick and portions were huge ! I couldn t even count how many clams / mussels were in my shellfish s pasta! Overall super friendly servers lovely interior and amazing food 10/10

Simple and straightforward menu with delicious flavour in a great setting.

The Modern Cafe provided a really delicious brunch experience. We got two different types of Bennys and did halves so we could try each. Both were delicious and I would have again. There are limited options for coffee and tea for a brunch forward restaurant. The service was slightly disappointing. I ordered a ceasar and watched it sit on the bar for almost 10 minutes while our servers chatted amongst themselves. I would definitely return for the food!

We met friends from Vancouver and after trying unsuccessfully to get in at several proven local restaurants, thought we d give the new owners at the Modern a go. We were pleasantly surprised with very tasty starters - seafood hotpot, baked oysters and humboldt squid all presented well. The cocktails were enjoyed but the vodka soda came tall, with lots of ice which watered down the drink too much. We all had burgers with the Korean fried chicken being the preferred choice. Good selection of beers on tap and BC wines. We finished off with the almond flour dense orange cake which was very fresh and delicious. All and all a solid dinner out for about $80 per person, 3 courses with tip, taxes and alcohol.

My wife and I went there for our anniversary. Food was great, service was great, drinks and atmosphere were great! Great place for a date night or dinner with friends.

The new Modern has potential to be great but is somehow just missing the mark. Perhaps its still too new. I had the crab cakes, flavours overpowered the crab and when youre using an expensive ingredient like that you should showcase it. Steak was again...just ok. Service was slow but you could tell they were a bit overwhelmed, they made up for it with charm.

We held our Staff Christmas dinner party here and couldn t have been happier. Absolutely first class all the way. From initial booking and communication, friendly and attentive service, and of course, incredible food. We have varying food needs in our group and there was something for everyone. We all left full & happy. Highly recommend!

The appetisers were ok, I was expecting to be blown away based on the cost and the small serving size and the cost. Cocktails were nice.

Nothing that special about it. The service was good the taste good. I have found that they put way to much croutons on the creaser salad which is my favourite.

The tasty menu created by new owners featured fresh and local ingredients. Everything from the drinks to the dessert was delicious! Honestly, I think we were disappointed with the contrast between a funky neon sign and what we found inside. We were hoping for an upscale diner experience. But instead, what we found was a restaurant struggling with its identity. I know that food prices are much higher and I fully support paying more to ensure that staff receive a fair wage, but if I wanted a fully loaded burger (with boar bacon, cheese, and mushrooms) and fries it was going to be $36. Even in the most unique of circumstances in Vancouver this would be pushing the limit. My wife and I both had the Korean Fried Chicken burger and beet salad. It was very good and fairly priced. But again, it would have been cool if they could have leaned into the diner aspect. Fun high end diner plating with wax paper around a delicious messy burger). It would make them competitive with an amazing restaurant like Melange that is two doors down. Im sorry. I really wanted to enjoy the experience and my food. It just fell short. The only other thing I would say is about the drinks. My wife had a stout that seemed flat (if that was the intent, then its more a case of her not liking that particular stout) and the selection of bourbons was a little lacking (only two and the bartender had to go up a ladder to find them tucked behind the Amaretto).

Can not recommend this place enough! Came mid week and got in right away for lunch. Korean fried chicken sandwich was so good. The beat salad was one of the best salads Ive ever had! Our server was fantastic and he was so friendly and didnt bat an eye at my aunts picky request for just greens. Will be returning :)

Great place for some delicious allergen-friendly options! My husband and I happened upon this restaurant on our way to the ferry and I was very impressed. I had the vegan Fava Bean Falafel. With my dietary restrictions it is often difficult to enjoy a meal without running into allergen issues, but the menu was laid out very well and our server was very knowledgeable about all the dishes. Truly delicious meal and great atmosphere. Great place to enjoy a relaxed dinner, but I would happily come back here again for a fancy date night dinner as well. Stumbled upon this place looking for lunch. And was definitely pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Korean chicken sandwich, my partner ordered the elk hoagie. Delicious! Only thing is I wish the coating on the chicken wasn t cooked as long. The fries are worth it! Best fries on the island. :)

Weve been to the Modern a couple of times since they were taken over by the new owners. The previous owners retired and the new owners are continuing to provide a great dining experience. The Modern has lots of interesting options, including vegan/vegetarian and they emphasize local ingredients. Most recently we went to celebrate a birthday and everything was great. They also have quite a bit of outdoor dining space which we really appreciate.

I was a bit worried seeing ownership had changed since my last visit, but I had no reason to be! I had the Orion burger and salad. Lunch was pretty busy, but service was quick and food delish! Yum!

At first the atmosphere was good , the bartender made a huckle berry gin which was really good, she does have some amazing talent. I ordered the mushroom linguine as the waitress recommended it and said it was better than the chicken. Two folks sat adjacent to me after I ordered and received their dinner before me, fried chicken burger and a salmon burger, they also received a second drink before I did, I asked where my meal was and was told that the entrees takes longer than the fried chicken burger. My meal arrived and looked nice and was interesting. However there was no flavour , no spice and nothing was cooked in the bowl other that the pasta noodles and the hot milk and butter that they say is an Alfredo type sauce. The meal came with no parmigiana cheese and was said on the menu that it came with garlic bread and when I asked where that was I was told it s extra. Then halfway through my meal some cold toast showed up and I was told oh it does come with it. Over all it was prolly the worst meal I ve ever eaten in naniamo and will likely never spend any money there again.

The Food, Service, and Time receiving your food after ordering is Excellent! Gorgeous Pub! Located in old Downtown Nanaimo, worth finding Parking! The Menue is Unique and a Taste Sensation!! Parking: Parking is Tricky! And if before 17:00 youll have to pay at a pay station, take a photograph (on your mobile phone) of your License Plate, so you enter it correctly!

On August 31 2023 at 615 p.m. I had planned to attend the restaurant next door but on my way by I saw the mussels/clams dish on an outdoor table at Modern and thought I would take a chance. I saw an table open up but unfortunately I had stood in the wrong place. There needs to be better signage of where they would like you to stand or go to get a table. I had waited for some time and the server came and invites someone else to a table. My fault for not intuitively figuring it out. That said, once I stood in the right place I got some very speedy service. Unfortunately there was no more outdoor seating available and I was seated inside. Not a great start. However though I was feeling fairly grumpy by this time the efforts of the staff promised something better so I decided to stay. Very efficient on a really busy day. I ordered the mussel/clam appetizer and a half order of the oysters. I was struck by the speed and efficiency of the staff. These people hustle and do a great job. The owners are getting full value for the dollar. These are obviously very experienced and highly skilled wait staff. The decor is cool with lots of exposed brick and some neat overhead features. Id call it a good spot for a date or a group dinner. I saw people from a variety of age groups that seemed to be having a nice evening. Music is sort of modern lounge I would describe it. It works with the space and wasnt overwhelming. The food was great. I was really pleased. They source all their ingredients as locally as possible and clearly put some real effort into the preparation. Presentation was great. Im sorry that a shot of the half order of oysters has no oysters. They were great and I ate them all! The menu has a reasonably broad range that can suit a lot of preferences. It is a winner. This was a home run experience all the way. I would absolutely eat here again and I think its a treat not to be missed in Nanaimo. The staff brought me from grumpy and generally dissatisfied with life to a pleased diner even though I was not able to get the outside table. A really nice experience.

We had lunch at the Modern Cafe. The service was super friendly and quick. The menu had something to offer for everyone and the food was excellent. We had the highly recommended Orion Burger, steak sandwich, salmon burger and a bowl. Everyone was more than happy with their food. There are some nice things to discover in the atmosphere and a fun selection of books behind the counter.

Do you know that The Modern Cafe is housed in a building dating back to 1800s? This is a must-try place for food if its your first time visiting Nanaimo!!! I had a fantastic dining experience at the Modern Cafe. Emily and Banri were super friendly and welcoming; good service, great conversations, fantastic quality food.

We enjoyed a family celebration with 12 people at The Modern Cafe this week. The service was amazing! Our server Camille was very attentive and kind while serving our large group. The food and beverages were lovely and everyone enjoyed the experience Thank you to the chef and team for making our evening special. We will be back!

Had a fantastic meal at The Modern- fresh local ingredients with an exotic flair. The calamari was to die for! Great room and service too. And priced very reasonably as well! Can t wait to go back.

Im very excited about the new Modern!! The latest addition to Nanaimos growing food scene:) Amazing from scratch, locally driven menu with a beautifully refreshed interior. Had a chance to sample of few offerings and wow! the flavours and quality is top notch, you wont be disappointed! Add to that amazing cocktails and a locally focused Island and BC wine list and Im in my happy place!! Cant wait to come back!

We visited after ownership recently changed to new owners who also own another very reputable and popular downtown eatery. Our visit and meal was very enjoyable with amazing customer service. We like this restaurant because of the slightly upscale atmosphere and when you want a modern fine dining experience.
