Whatafood is Vancouver’s first and authentic Brazilian street food restaurant. Brazilian food is notoriously known for two things: delicious and simple. We want to bring this experience here to Vancouver and share our welcoming culture with everyone who walks into our space. This is why we chose the simple comfort foods that we enjoyed as children in street fairs and festivals. We are passionate in educating others about our rich culture, we feel our menu does just that. Along with what we have we like to enrich our recipes with locally sourced ingredients from companies we believe in and in doing so invite others to share in our wonderful food, laughter and a sense of belonging to a bigger family.
This has been my favourite restaurant until now when I met a rude young girl today. It’s Sunday and 5:30 pm. She was the one without glasses. She was literally dictating my order. I had a guest tonight from out of town who asked me if I could recommend a good restaurant and I brought him here to have shrimp no. 8. I ordered for both of us when she suddenly asked my friend if he eats shrimp what I had just ordered. My friend doesn’t normally eat shrimp but he wanted to try. The girl insisted that your friend doesn’t want shrimp embarrassing me in the process. Then I was ordering the bigger one no. 8. She insisted that my friend can also get the smaller one because the bigger one is expensive. So my friend who likes to eat more ended up eating half of my order too. My friend hated what he had ordered and his comments were that this is a terrible restaurant. The shrimp that I ordered had very few shrimps in it. Terrible food. I’m not coming back to this restaurant again.
A fun place to try Brazilian street food. The Pastels are tasty with good melted cheese pull in the middle. The assorted deep fried bites were good with mixtures of ham and cheese, chicken, etc. They sell drinks like matte and guarana. The food is on the heavier and greasy side but unique and tasty and good for an occasional treat. They also sell some Brazilian groceries there.
This place always looks empty so I thought the food wasn't good but after passing by for so many years, I finally decided to go inside and the food is delicious! My husband got the carne seca and I got the calabresa and the pastry itself was tasty on its own and the filling so flavourful in a good way! I will go back to try every filling. Please check this place out! Warning: dining in will have you smelling like oil after 15 minutes, haha.
Tried for the first time yesterday. It was sooo delicious and crispy! We had the plain cheese puffs, which were soo yummy and goey inside. We also had the beef especial pasteis. The crust was super thin and flaky and the filling was delicious.
Great pastel de queijo! Felt so good to be able to have a little taste of home again. The bolinha de queijo was a little too bland for me, a little salt would have helped. My friend got coxinha de frango and said it was good. I’d love to see more vegetarian options of pastel like cheese with oregano and tomatoes (pizza style) Prices are high considering what I’m used to paying for this meal in Brazil but knowing everything is imported is understandable. Unfortunately it’s not the place I’d be able to go to and have more than one pastel.
I liked the texture of the crisply fried dough in my beef and cheese pastel, but I found it pricy based on the sparse amount of filling and it was a bit bland tasting. It was also a very long wait (15 mins) despite the fact that we were the only ones in the joint. I had to inquire about my order and the cashier explained that my wife’s chicken pie was still being prepared and it was delayed because their gravy machine was broken. By the time I received my pastel, it was luke warm, but the chicken was hot. The chicken tasted like it was from a can though. I had also wanted to try their fresh pressed sugar cane juice but alas, that juice press was also broken. Not sure I would give this place a second try. Maybe for the fresh sugar cane juice as I miss fresh pressed sugar cane juice! I would have given 1 star but the cashier seemed very apologetic for the delay, so I moved it up one star.
Delicious pastel and coxinha! Fresh, tasty and great customer service! A bit pricey, but that’s the price to pay when you miss food from your home country… it not only fills up the belly but also the heart 💛💚💙
This place used to be amazing, especially a couple of years ago. Sadly, it seems like they’ve made some changes. The meat pastel now uses a lower-quality, oily cut of ground beef, and the palmito pastel, which used to be just like the ones in Brazil, hardly has any palmito anymore. It’s disappointing to see the quality isn’t what it used to be.
Cake delight
One of the best pastries Ive ever eaten was in Canada, maybe its because I hadnt eaten pastry in months but anyway
Tried this place on a whim, not disappointed. the pasteis is soo addicting, never had one before and already craving it. the seasoning on the beef and cheese is chefs kiss.
Delicious food with great service!! Reminds me of pizza pops but 100x better. Amazingly done.
The beef pastel is really really good
Best Brazilian restaurant in Vancouver
Good food, smells weird in store
Great place. Tiago was super nice and the food was super yummy. Recommend the shrimp pastel and the acai bowl!!
Ive walked past this location 1000 times but I finally stopped in to try it out. I took home a chicken and cheese and a bauru from the classic menu. I will definitely be back to explore the rest of the menu. Service was excellent as was the food. Food
Great pastry!
This place is absolutely delicious, hot flavorful food cooked to order. Ive been there 2x now and stop here any time I find myself at New West Stn. Do yourself a favor and have a beef and cheese pastel, youll be hooked too.
coxinha was cold inside :( also I ordered bacon and cheese pastel and kept saying bacon because the girl kept putting in beef and cheese and I even pointed to it and she still put in beef and cheese and I thought it was ok because their screens werent working so the system was broken or something but I got a beef and cheese and had to order from a different guy
The coxinha was the best, and finally a place where I could find a good grape juice.
Poorly managed for online orders , never received my order
I really enjoy going to get my smoothlys here and usually during the weekdays the staff is great but Ive really come to not enjoy coming on weekends because the staff dont even put in any effort for the customers which shouldnt be the case so Im sorry to say I will be avoiding the restaurant on weekends because I would be embarrassed if the restaurant clerk argued with me about things if I had company with me as I usually speak highly about this. Thanks for reading my review.
The best coxinha in Vancouver
Delicious Brazilian Street Food
Food good, overpriced though
Root Brazilian food. The only thing missing was sugarcane juice. huaaaaa. Its worth going, pastel, coxinha. All the best
Authentic Brazilian food with fair price! Beef pastel feels just like home! Definitely 5 out of 5!
First time here and will return
Wife and I tried the food here for the first time today. The food was absolutely amazing! The staff was very nice. She offered us a sample to try. We ended up buying some because it was so good! Thank you for the great food and experience!
quality improved a lot since last visit , best taste
Pastel is good, very well stuffed, a bit pricey though. 14 dollars, at least for me, is expensive. Is good when you really miss something that you havent eaten for a while. Came in a sunday night, there was some ingredients missing, but its ok. The guy working there was super friendly. It could be a little less expensive.
The Cheese Pastel was good, but to pay almost $14 dollars for just one pastel will make me not come back. Nevertheless keep up with the good work. Thank you
Incredible! Deliciously fresh and rich calabresa pastel. Ill be making eating here a weekly staple when Im at New West station! So impressed.
There are some Brazilian foods to buy and fried snacks
Unbelievable Salgadinhos and Pastel for such a good price too
Delicious pastel and churros! Thank you to Thiago, very nice man.
Clean and nice place that offer authentic tasty Brazilian food, first time trying a pastel! They also sell Brazilian products yerba mate, coffee and snacks
Oh Yeah! Very good and brings me back to Brazil. Highly recommended
Great Brazilian flavors in Vancouver. Excellent Brazilian pastel. Well filled and fried!!! Delicious.
Great service. Great food!
Worst restaurant ever if I have a chance for less than one star I would be happy to give that. This is the worst restaurant to pick up food as they have unmanaged staff. They don t know how to work. They told me to wait for 10 minutes and I wait for around 35 minutes for the food. So please manage this organize this.
Delicious
Ive visited a few times now with friends and family. The food is always just as delicious and fresh. You can tell by the amount of preparation and time they take to make the food. The staff are always nice and have given me great suggestions to try. The churros here are the best.
First time trying a pastel and it is so freaking good, definitely recommend!!
Wonderful pastry, coxinha and cod cake! Very good service! Great place to miss Brazilian food! The pastry is super filling!
Always excellent, the burgers super delicious. I recommend.
One of my new favorite stores. Great quality, great pricing, tastes super fresh, everyone was super friendly!
Amazing food! Fantastic service!! You got to try the pastels!!
absolutely amazing, pastels are light, flakey, crisp and stuffed with melty cheese. and the mini churros are out of this world. friendly staff. Would highly recommend and will have to come back.
Recommendations to the restaurant, don t bother with anything else other than pastels. Not sure if Acai bowls are meant to be eaten right away or defrosted for a week before eating. I understand that this place is advertised as Brazilian street food so why waste time and resources with this. Just remove it off your menu if it s an afterthought addition.
Im very disappointed. I walked in and ordered had to wait 10 mins, I come back she passed me the box without checking and my chicken pastel is missing from the box. I didnt notice till I got home... It wasnt even busy. Now I get nothing for my dinner. At least they managed to get the boys order correct. I dont think I will be back. I was also collecting stamps and now apparently they arent doing stamps anymore. Meanwhile Ive been going in to fill out the card. Finally get it filled out for a free one and she tells me its no good. So leaving out my order certainly doesnt sit well. Ive been a regular customer there since they opened including buying grocery items for my Brazilian students. Im very disappointed. She said they would return the money on my item. If they dont I will drop in tomorrow and speak with the owner. I order 3 pastels how hard can it be to get the 3 in a box?
Coxinha and churros were tasty! The beef + cheese and margherita pastel were good as well, but the Romeo and Juliet one was a bit tough.
Very tasty Brazilian food!!!
The best pastel that you can have in BC, you can create your own pastel asking for toppings and all of them are delicious, the one that I got is a Cheese special it is big and its quite stuffed. They have a little shop of some groceries and snacks from Brazil that are awesome too. The music there is great with chill Brazilian music. Thats it! Vegetarian options: They have options that are great! Wheelchair accessibility: They have wheelchair accessibility
Approved drumstick!!
Fantastic place, with delicious Brazilian food, outstanding service, polite and respectful. Super recommended!!
açaí is not good,
Pastries are good, nice variety and crispy texture. The churros definetly stole the show, so warm, soft and filled with caramel sauce, would come back just for those.
first taste is Really Normal, however, when we eat inside, it s really good
Tried the cheese pastel while at the Powell Street festival in Vancouver, very tasty and delicious! Service was quick and staff were super friendly.
I bought their smaller size coxinha (chicken ball/croquettes), cheese balls with calabresa sausage, ham & cheese balls and cod balls. All super yummy. I really liked the cod ball, very very good, better than a certain Portuguese store in Vancouver. Great prices too. The more you buy, the cheaper if you buy several of the mini ones. I just wished they put more filling in the mini coxinha. The other mini ones had great amt of fillings. Would I come back? Definitely a big yes .
This place is absolutely amazing. We stopped in to try a new snack, however we ordered the wrong item and got the big pocket, pastel? I think? Anyways, we couldnt stop eating it and cancelled our dinner date after the movie so we could finish these. Seriously so tasty.
Undercooked Churos. Gross.
Best Brazilian street food. Pastel and guaraná are the best combination. The place is also very clean and they really know how to handle food. One of my favorite spots. Wheelchair accessibility: Elevator available
Best pastel in Vancouver.
Excellent food at a good value. My wife had an pasteis classico and i had a pasteis especial. They were really well made and did not skimp on filling. My daughter also loved the churros. Well be back...frequently.
Great food, fantastic staff and fair pricing.
I think your employees should be more polite!
Great food. Super nice employees. Great prices. Easily the best food at New West Station
Onofre has the best customer service ever!!! But dont use UberEats...
The pastels were very tasty, good service, nice people.
Since the ownership change, Ive observed a noticeable decline in .
Foods and service are good, but not many on the menu.
GREAT! Stuff is fresh and made to order. Their sugar cane juice is amazing! Service was nice too. Will be back but maybe not soon cause I dont want to get fat ahahah its definitely a good cheat meal food!!!
Great option for Brazilian food in Vancouver
Great place for pastel, a Brazilian deep fried street food pastry and some Brazilian products. Kitchen is clean Theyre fast, polite, kind Cant recommend enough
Different! Tasty pastels are like flat large samosas. Inside the New West SkyTrain mall across from Dollar Store. All venue with limited seating. Try the chicken and cheese! Its definitely something unique. Underground parking available.
I had the beef and cheese and overall it was good but found it quite dry without the hot sauce. The crust was very nice and flaky though.
Food is good, but they are aggressively, infuriatingly slow. Saying something is NOT a pastel is a joke in Brazil, because pasteis are QUICK to make. Be prepared to wait 45 min to dry something that should only take 5.
Pastel was good, just like in Brazil. Crispy and well fried. I just found the place a little pricy, but its a great treat!
Excellent service! Delicious pastry! I felt like I was in our beloved s pastry shop
Great food, really Brazilian taste =)
Excellent meat and cheese pastry
Got food poisoning from the coxinha, there was something in the chicken. They need to clean their meats and do food safe. On the other hand: Awesome customer service from Victor! The place is a place to chill and eat pastels. Plus they got groceries from Brazil. Do wish they had more options such as Pao de Quejó but they are still a new business.
rubbish, we could have some beef sandwiches, it was half raw and I was a nervous wreck. All the wet bread looked like it was put together by a 2 year old. It also arrived ice cold. Dont waste your money in this place
Fantastic Brazilian food! Food came out hot, flavorful, and crispy. Fair pricing and really loved the cheese balls!
The taste of Brasil in Vancouver I love it
Delicious and even yummy the next day!
Tried Pastels for the first time, since I am a vegetarian tired the cheese Pastel, it was amazing and delicious. Will definitely go back in future.
Their pastel is very crispy and tasty, just like in Brazil! Excellent food and friendly service!
I love this place !!!! Wish I lived closer
Best Brazilian Pastel food at Vancouver.
Cool Brazilian street food place, conveniently located at the New West Skytrain station. I like their short and straightforward menu, 4-5 things made to perfection. This time I tried mini churos .. love love!
Authentic Brazilian pastel - just perfect!
Super friendly service. Good food.
Amazing brazilian street food!!!
Legit and delicious
It s a must try kind of place. Food is delicious! Specially with the suggar cane juice!
Absolutely love their selection of delicious fried pockets and unique Brazilian grocery items. Feels like a cultural trip every time you step into the store. Such a great addition to the downtown area!! Will continue to support.
Very tasty pastries! It definitely managed to kill my longing for Brazil a little bit.
Excellent Delivery! Very warm attention on the phone, it arrives quickly in more remote neighborhoods with shipping notice and the menus are delicious!!! I recommend it without hesitation
Mozzarela pastel is my favourite in Metro Vancouver. 10-pack coxinha is a good deal as well. Located at the 2nd floor of New Westminster station
Last Friday first time there, I order to go a sugar cane juice(500ml) and beef jerky pastel with cheese(big one). The sugar cane juice was the worse I had in my life, not sure what was wrong with it, test was terrible i just threw away. The pastel could have more cheese for a $14 price tag. Both were not worth for $24 incl. tax, could have much more and better food somewhere else.
Too expensive for what you get. Ordered a calabrese with chese and a chicken with cheese and both didnt have much flavour at all. The meats (especially the chicken) had like no flavour/seasoning. The juice was way overpriced and was not very good for what it cost. Wouldnt mind trying again but wouldnt waste money on a combo. The staff was nice and the place was clean.
Delicious food, clean place and great staff!
The best of Vancouver!!!!!
simply the best pastry in Canada! I recommend it to everyone!
Quality Brazilian food!
Show !!! Very good meat
Great
I really enjoyed the service provided by the owner because he is very polite and attentive. And its excellent quality products, and its very tasty pastries and juices!
So disappointed. Overpriced and limited menu. Won t go back
Great pastels and coxinha, service is really nice. Totally recommend for authentic and delicious Brazilian food!
Pastel we got tasted really good! A bit salty for my taste but still very tasty. One thing really stands out for me is the Cod? or their deep fried fish balls. Yumm!
Interesting and filling, will go again.
It was good but not amazing, a bit too oily and for me the cheese pastel need more filling.
Tasty food, say yes to the hot sauce.
Really great
Delicious food!
We had some delicious pastel and coxinhas. Definitely recommend the catupiry chicken! Very Friendly staff as well. I wish the pastel came with a serving of Vinagrete (tomato slaw) and that they had more hot sauce variety. That being said will definitely come back!
It s so nice to have a different option from all the sushi, noodle, or donair options (not that I m complaining - we have a great food scene in new west!). The pastels here are delicious and, omg, when they have the guava option in the summer months, *chefs kiss* Still waiting to try the whatabites, but I m sure they re awesome as well!
Definitely overpriced but fresh pastels with decent flavors. Get the large as the regular size is not that filling.
Friendly staff. Delicious very brazilian like food. The sugar juice is amazing. Cute, clean little place.
This place definitely has the wow factor! If you wanna try the pastel (empanadas) and drink the sugar cane juice, there you will find it. Every bite will travel you to Brazil and gives you the taste of having street food with all the energy of that amazing country. They also have Brazilian bites, like the Coxinha. I can not say the food is good because it was perfection in the shape of happiness. They dont serve food, they serve an experience. Go there and try it! Suggestion: in the website, give precise instructions about where it is located. Last time I was in Vancouver I gave up going there because we could not find it. This time someone told us it was inside the station.
Awesome!!! I have been craving for this since I moved here 6 years ago. Pastel tastes the same as the ones I used to bought back in Brasil, but we much more fillings. Keep the good work guys!!
Small portion for the price. Not even that much filling inside.
Just ordered thru uber eats and the pasteis were delicious.
1 year without pastel living in Victoria. Think about the emotion.
I bought the pastels from this place long time ago when they first opened. Bought for to go, got the mozarella cheese because I saw the picture that it stretches and also got the sweet version of nutella. Waited around 10mins, not a problem at all because they had to deep fried it first. Now, I took skytrain home which was about 15-20mins max from this place and once I got home, opened the box and tried it I felt disappointed because the fillings inside were completely separated from the dough. Also, the dough for nutella is salty which was weird. I would hope they improve the quality by now, but I felt disappointed especially when it s on the higher price.
A little Brazilian corner to warm our hearts with that sweet pastry with sugarcane juice. And on top of that, EXCELLENT service. Marina, thank you for the welcome!
I loved the pastry! Coxinha isnt even mentioned, just remembering it makes your mouth water Very tasty cold sugarcane broth! I cant wait to have one of these in Victoria!
When you say deep-fried you generally get my attention... Which is why I dropped by Whatafood at the New West Skytrain to try their Brazilian pastel. Specifically, their beef and cheese pastel which is a deep-fried pocket of ground beef and cheese wrapped inside a flaky pastry. First off, the pastry shell was light and flaky. I wish it came with something to hold it with... like a cardboard wrapper to keep the oil off your hands and to help keep it together. Mine was wrapped in paper napkins which sorta helped to sop up the oil but did little to add to the structural integrity of the pastel. Hence, it got very messy to eat as the thin shell fell apart easily as I ate it. I did like the cheesy pull but it could have used more cheese throughout. The beef could have used some seasoning but they have a pack of hot sauce and ketchup. Just under $10. Prepared pretty quick and ok for a snack.
Always a great experience, the food is delicious and the staff is super nice, specially Alexandre :)
Great service, great food, value ok. The cashier mixed up my friends order with mine and they cooked a new one right away after i brought it up. The large pastels could be slightly bigger/more filling for the price.
Excellent food, strongly recommended.
Very good :)
Nice place to eat Brazilian pastel!
Friendly staff and delicious food
Tried the pastel today and it was huge (and a very generous fillings as well).
Amazing Brazilian Pastel, a must eat for everyone that enjoys fast but great food! The services where excellent when we visited the place, Flávia, Geiza and Tiago were extremely kind and friendly! Well be back much more times and recommend to our friends!
If you miss the typical Brazilian market pastel with sugar cane juice this is your place. They have a variety of bit size deep fried like coxinha too, guaraná pop and a small store of Brazilian products. Is a little more expensive than I would expect, but still in a affordable price range, since its snaks.
It is a traditional Brazilian snack bar where you will find out pastels and guarana or if even sugar caine juice. The price is a little bit high, but if you miss the Brazilian food, it is a place that worth any penie. Kind staff and fresh food.
The service is very friendly but the food is not good enough to justify its price point. Also the calabrese sausage isnt spicy at all?
