The Expat is a cozy watering hole featuring Southeast Asian soul food, craft cocktails, brunch, and a all day Happy Hour from 11:30am to 6pm, 7 days a week. Our name pays tribute to the reality that so many of us came to New York to build a new life or to create new memories whether our hometowns are across the pond or across the ocean. We wanted our name to embody that truth. So wherever you’re from, we hope you’ll feel at home.
A cute bar for meeting with friends or for a date. It’s great to go for happy hour to get drinks and snacks. I really like the chicken wings and the different flavorings they have.
STOP AND READ! I have been to over 30 Thai spots since approx 2010 and this place has the best spring rolls and most delicious chicken basil ever! It's really delicious! Please check it out. Has a big bar too but the food is seriously terrific.
This restaurant was recommend by several of my friends, I was hesitant to try it at first, but decide to give it a go. As I entered, the host didn't greet me at all, I decided to sit at the bar since it was just me. The female bartender was overwhelmed and scolded me when I asked for a menu, I assured her its not a problem since they were busy. When my food arrived I had to wait for utensils for few minutes, only to be given plastic fork because they ran out of their regular ones. Fine. There was a large party that sat next to me that was extremely loud and pushed me away from my space, while going back and forth for food multiple times. I tried to reason with them by asking them to be more courteous of their surroundings, to my surprise they were apologetic but also didn't change their behavior. The Thai fried rice that I ordered wasn't good, there was no flavor, and the chicken was undercooked. Fine, took it to go. As I tried to finish my drink, a staff member almost took it away, this is when I decided to get up and pay my tab and leave. The female bartender that didn't even serve me yelled at me in front of whole bar that next time I should tip. Girlie, you tip for service, not for attitude issues. Just because you can't handle stress and work you shouldn't take it out on other people. Also public shaming can lead to a lawsuit, look it up. If you are LGBT person or a POC avoid this please, they clearly don't want you there, nor your business. Hope that the rude female bartender find a job that suits her attitude and zero respect for people.
The restaurant is a gastro pub and is in the basement and as you enter the bar is right in front of you, so its a drunkard's delight. The restaurant is pretty small, however, there is outside dining. Outside dining needs to up their game, it's pretty sloppy and some tables had bad lighting and right underneath the public CC cameras. Food: ⭐⭐½ Positives - The lemon curry pepper wings were good. It had a crunch to it and had a good zingy taste to it. The curry chicken quesadillas were very good. Earl grey hot tea was outstanding. Negatives - The Singapore noodles although came with a large serve, felt was lacking seasoning. The Tom yum chicken fried rice although smelled good, the taste didn't match the aroma, infact the food tasted stale and mushy. The Bo Luc Lac was delicious, but disappointing when it came to quantity. There were more cucumbers than beef cubes and it was cooked to well done 😐. The spring rolls were soggy and oily when served. Coconut rice didn't have the authentic robust coconut flavor. Service: ⭐⭐ The waitress who took our call, received us at our arrival, and who seated us was welcoming & cordial. However, the waitress who took our order was on the flip side. Initially was good, but turned out to make our evening a disaster. We placed our order and 20 mins later my wife had her order (fried rice). Unlike most restaurants, they didn't serve the appetizers first and my wife waited for the rest of the food to arrive so we all could eat together however minutes passed and nothing arrived. I had to call the waiter and sendthe fried rice back as it became cold. She looked pissed turned around and said in this restaurant we serve whatever is ready first and everything else comes after. In my head and the rest were thinking "so what's the concept of having appetizers (cravables) if you don't get it before the entreés". Anyways we let it go by and waited more. 10 mins later she comes in and in a mocking tone explained: "since you wanted everything together, they are remaking your food". We all had facepalms😐. 10 mins later the server came and explained it to us for no reason and this time said next time you have to tell us if you want appetizers first. But isn't this common sense to serve them first???!!!!. Anyways we got the food and it wasn't up to par. Ambience: ⭐⭐⭐ The restaurant looked very dull as the first impression led to it being in a basement. Lighting was low, tables and chairs didn't match, some seats were right underneath the NYPD cameras, and tons of marijuana smoke from the streets. I would let others know to dine in and have less than 5 people as the tables don't fit larger groups. Overall: ⭐⭐⅓ Suggestions: Use basmati rice or sona masoori rice, might help with the mushiness of the rice. Explain the customers the order in which they might receive their food. Waitresses need retraining in people skills. Please make rounds to ensure people have full glasses of water.
I came here after a friend recommended their chicken and waffles to me. The service and vibes of this spot are pleasantly rustic and chill. The wait staff were very comfortable making recommendations, which I really appreciated. While visually the impressive, I personally didn’t enjoy their take on chicken and waffles, as it leaned too far into the savory side (they added spring onions and some Asian seasoning). The skin completely fell apart the already small portion of fried chicken and it was very dry and lacking any fat. The syrup, however, was wonderful!
Came here for brunch and it was amazing! Every dish was delicious and fresh and the cocktails were strong and tasty. We ordered the Vietnamese omelette, Thai basil fried rice, spicy mango salad, and lemon curry tater tots. I'll definitely be back!
One of the best places in the neighborhood! Great place for any occasion, whether it’s date night, group hang or a solo read at the bar in the afternoon during their extended Happy Hour. Food and drinks are on point. They just revamped the menu for spring and prices are fair for nyc. Cocktails are always creative and range from martini to tiki style punches! The staff are super friendly and welcoming, can’t say enough how great this place is!
The food here was ok, but nothing special. The chicken pad thai was pretty run of the mill and the lychee rose creme brulee was more like pudding with a lot of sugar on top. I don't think they torched it enough to be crisp and crunchy. Nice idea but not a great execution. My server / bartender was nice but seemed a bit overwhelmed and not super attentive. The place has great ambiance and a nice vibe though. I would maybe come back to try something 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars
Vegetarian options: Great vegan options Food
Great little spot located a block away from Broadway. It doesnt get a lot of transient traffic which makes it a quiet place to visit. Love the cuisine here as well as the selection of alcohol.
Best drinks and wings on the UWS. Always get the best service too. Shout out to our waitress Katie. Great bar
Chill vibes
Yesterday I went there and was given the option of two tables. I opted for the table, closest to the window for me and my date to enjoy. The server then started to prepare the table for me. Shortly after a gentleman walks in with the dog and has a conversation with the server. The server then looks back at me and proceeds to give the table to the gentleman with the dog. No consideration, no apologies for the inconvenience, not even a conversation saying hey it ll be just a while longer. Just a smug smile. To add insult to injury, he eventually comes over to my date and I to offer us seats outside. It was 8 pm and 48 degrees outside. And it made me wonder if you offered the guy with the dog the same option. Never felt more disrespected at a restaurant.
A great local place to have a drink.
Good food, service and hospitality
They removed all the good food from the menu and changed the remaining ones: 1. Fried chicken sando: much smaller compared to what it used to be 2. Ginder chicken soup: does not even exist anymore 3. Bahn mi burger: doesnt have anything to do with the image they put online (it is just like a sad whopper) 4. Eggs benedict: gone 5. Vietnamese vermicelli bowl: meatballs are gone Almost everything I liked about this restaurant has changed in last year. Seriously, cant work harder to lose your existing customers.
Absolutely loved our time at the expat!! Food was delicious and service was fabulous. I m strictly gluten free and the menu was marked with lots of GF items and staff was knowledgeable about managing cross contamination. Hope to be back soon!
Casual Thai inspired gastropub. Great, speedy, tasty food. Ordered the chicken and waffles - did not disappoint.
Immediately became sick after eating here. Normally I do not give bad reviews but I Do not recommend eating here. Many other good places in the neighborhood
Excellent
Watery drinks, sloppy and flavorless food, I get its a very busy bar but setting up the table with napkins soon as we are seated is standard protocol?? My friend took a chance inviting me here and we both left extremely disappointed (he was furious the mochi churros are gone)
Today I tried the cauliflower wings and it was delicious thank you guys
I absolutely love this place. Great food (cheeseburger bahn mi and Singapore noodles for example) great drinks (excellent beer and significant whisky offerings) excellent service (attentive, kind and CHILL) and a cool vibe (Columbia cool/Manhattan school of music nerds). Go for the vibe stay for the food and drink.
Great bar. Good vibes. Friendly staff.
Great spot. Service was excellent. Loved the food - great beer too .
went there many times, no complaint, food is good and great vibe there
Loved the experience, ambiance, customer service, and food.
The absolute coziest bar to read a book, get slammed, or show your mom the hood. 10/10
We used to like this place (live down the street). The food is no longer good and the service is inattentive.
Love this place!!! Great food, great drinks, excellent service!! Neighborhood gem!
Super chill spot for lunch with exceptional service. Our food was bright with flavor, from sandwiches to stir fry dishes, and our host was very kind and thoughtful.
This place always rocked for dinner! Amazing vibe- yummy food and super tasty cocktails. But lunch was such a treat too - super kid friendly, great food and quick/nice service. Yes!!!
Amazing. Perfect ambience, super staff, great pours, delicious food!!
Food and ambience is just lovely. However, the service is pretty sad. They look overworked and they can t deal with giving anyone any service. I wish expat would just hire more staff so that they look happy and have lots of energy to treat customers perfectly well.
I never write reviews but I just couldn t stay silent and watch one of my favorite places in the area just fall apart right in front of my eyes. Like others below me have also reported, if you ve been a regular then you re in for some heartache because nearly all the food that used to make this place amazing are gone or unrecognizable. Mochi churros gone, their burger selections gone, and what happened to the noodles?? I brought friends here to impress them but it was so embarrassing.
Very chill spot with really good food
I have never met a manager this rude. He kicked out a party of 10 and made them pay for drinks. He made us leave for writing a bad review on google!! How terrible. Gave no explanation to the table of why we needed to leave. You can find my other 1 star review on yelp from a few years ago where the charged me $50 dollars for two beers. The servers charged what they felt. Terrible manager. Extremely rude. I truly have never met a manager at a bar that disrespectful. Expect bad reviews every week!!
I love The Expat! They are a perfect neighborhood spot, great food and even better drinks. Always nice to nice to people! If you were kicked out you probably deserved it
We made a reservation for 10 people and because the staff didnt take a note of that the group was placed on a 7-people table. The staff accused us like it wasnt their fault. And this happened on my birthday. (The manager- the person with glasses, kicked us out. After we paid for drinks. They are mean. He read the review when we were at the bar hahaha poor people). + (they dont follow the rules and will get into trouble soon the customer is always right. grow up, educate yourself on how to be professional, and learn how to manage your emotions okay. i got the managers video its everywhere tomorrow ;))
The Expat is hands down my favorite bar in NYC. Food and drink options are unique and fantastic. Atmosphere is great.
One of the best and not too expensive local spots in New York! Servers, bartenders and hosts always provide a lovely experience. Would definitely recommend stopping in!! Happy hour is also very nice here!
The noise levels were unbearably loud, disturbing the entire neighborhood. Whats worse, fights seem to be a regular occurrence, often involving the manager himself. This so-called manager, who introduces himself as the owner, exhibits inappropriate behavior towards females there, making them uncomfortable with his disturbing behaviors and talks. Hes easily recognizable with his glasses and brown hair. Stay away!!! Overall, a disappointing and concerning experience that I cannot recommend to anyone.
What the hell happened to this place, the Pad Thai used to be my go to here but the last two times it s been basically an inedible pile of soggy slop where all the noodles are overcooked and chopped into little pieces on arrival. My girlfriend had the Singapore noodle which was also an inedible gloopy mess. I noticed we weren t the only ones that barely touched our food looking around. Such a bummer how much this place has slipped.
We hosted a faculty happy hour at Expat and everything was wonderful. The staff was great, food was good, and the atmosphere was very cozy. definitely would recommend!
Had a wonderful Sunday Brunch here. Service was amazing. Especially Jean and Sarah. Food was excellent. Great location
My god whats happened to this place! They used to have a really killer Bánh Xèo that was perfectly crispy and generously stuffed, not to mention numerous other dishes that have now completely become a pale shadow of what they used to be. The BX I had yesterday during brunch was limp and soggy and the food my friend ordered also lacked flavor. Shame.
The nicest bar tenders in nyc
My new favorite neighborhood spot! Such a wide selection of options and everything I have had is delicious. The more impressive thing are the cocktails. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into created well balanced, tasty cocktails. I will be back again and again! Vegetarian options: Lots of vegan and vegetarian options! Dietary restrictions: Lots of gluten free options!
Bring back the old chicken sandwich and the ginger chicken soup. I ve been a regular the past few years and came in and ordered the chicken sandwich like always with no warning that it had changed. The new one lacks the flavor the old one did. Likely won t be back anymore because of these changes
Love love LOVE The Expat. Great food, great cocktails, great service! A cozy neighborhood spot with immaculate vibes! Highly recommend
My favorite place to eat uptown. Love the Thai basil fried rice. And oh my lord those curried tater tots!!! Fantastic atmosphere, fantastic service. Highly recommend!
Great experience at the Expat as per usual! I ll keep coming back for the food, elevated cocktails and friendly staff!
Read before to go: The food from this place is farrrrrr what you are expecting if you are a old and current customer. The menu has the same name but the dishes are totally different! The breakfast burger and chicken waffles used to be amazing - now they are a very bad - cheap solution. I would give 6 months to this restaurant to survive the new cuisine / administration! Very heartbroken.
We love love love you guys - but you have GOT to double check your orders for side items. We ve made countless $1 donations when paying for a side of green goddess dressing and don t ever get it. Tonight we ordered two, specifically to ensure we d get at least one, and we only got one, as expected lol
Love this place. Super awesome chill vibe- great kombucha on tap- fabulous service and great noodle dishes!
Curry tater tots are so good! Big portions for the price
I ve ordered pickup through Grubhub several times. But the last time, there was a problem: the box with my noodles was dirty. It looked like it might have been on the ground or even stepped on, and they still used it for my food.
Absolutely go. It s cool with great food and drink, can t ask for much more than that. Will go back!
I was completely delighted by this place. Total gem of a spot. Great for a larger group. Food totally took me back to my time in SE Asia. Great martinis, too.
The bar staff and servers were amazing. Sarah made us some amazing cocktails and made my partner and I feel very welcome at the bar. We are definitely coming back!
Extremely good food with tons of flavor (curry tots + cauli wings were exceptional), fun digs, and wonderful service. Would highly recommend!
I was very impressed by the place. Great atmosphere, delicious food and drinks. My only con is that the drinks took too long to arrive, but the staff was very friendly and the fries were to die for.
Phenomenal hidden spot in West Harlem with a speakeasy vibe and awesome veg friendly southeast asian food. They have phenomenal wings (all can be made with cauliflower!), we had the lemon pepper, buffalo and dragon wings, all were great. Additionally, we also had singapore noodles, and the vermicelli noodles were also recommended. Well be coming back, and cocktails are going to be great! Vegetarian options: Lots of dishes can be made vegetarian Wheelchair accessibility: Stairs to get down into the venue
Having been a expat in Asia, Singapore/Jakarta/Seoul as well as Europe Austria/Geneva, this appropriately but not overdone venue brings back many positive memories and I have been a consistent local regular since I moved to UWS including hosting events. Unlike many small bars of this kind in NYC the service is consistently high as well as quality of its food/drinks yet approachable.
Great little place by Columbia to hang out. Absolutely loved their tofu bites and Singapore noodles. Such a cute little place. Will return soon
One of my favorite places. Great bartenders and food!
one of our favorite neighborhood spots. great food and great drinks! unique vibes. Vegetarian options: Lots of veggie options. The cauliflower wings are delicious. Especially the thai sweet chili
One of the cutest neighborhood bars and restaurants in the area. The food is good. The drinks are stellar. The bartenders are cool.
Horrible service!!!!!! Sat down then asked to move because a larger party came in. Completely understandable. However the table we moved to was broken, again . Ok. Order drinks nothing. The group of 6 that sat down next to us that we had to give up our spot for got their drinks. We mentioned our drinks haven t come out yet only to get a reply a few mins later that they were backed up. However the last straw was the. two groups that came in after us received drinks and food while we forgotten about and told there was a back up on drinks. We didn t even get to the food to review. If this is the level of service then I do not recommend!
For a Saturday brunch, got the avocado toast (delicious) and the home fries (some of the best Ive ever eaten). Excellent vibes. Dietary restrictions: Gluten free options
Nice quiet ambiance. Low key but nice enough
Carlitos the best bartender in town
Love this little spot, didnt have that Thai tea clarified punch but Im going back in hopes for it!
I was basically blamed for ordering delivery directly through their website. Was told my food had been ready for a while and they were waiting on a random third party delivery person to show up. Since we don t employ delivery people we don t know it ll be picked up or delivered. Great system you have on your official website. It s already 30 minutes after a 60 minute ETA I was quoted when ordering. Can t wait for this probably ice cold food
Quaint little bar and restaurant. Had a brilliant cocktail up at the bar. There was a moving playing on the wall for some casual entertainment between talking. Prices are on par with other mixed drinks at other bars.
My boyfriend and I both got food poisoning from this place a few hours after eating here. I dont recommend this place. Its been a full week and weve been having severe diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, dehydration. We had to go to the emergency room to seek for help.
Great drinks, good ambiance, great mixologists and the shrimp quesadilla is gooos
Double Fried Overcooked Chicken Tenders Papaya Salad (that s half bean sprouts) with barely a taste of fish sauce or lime. I d pass
Good vibes, good food! Portions were HUGE and it was surprisingly very authentic and tasty. A lot better than some of the more expensive places. Cocktails were amazing as well. Highly recommend.
If I could give 6 stars for service, I would. Well priced drinks and cocktails. Fun Asian fusion food options with a ton of vegetarian choices. A classic movie is always on and whether its busy or quiet, its cozy. Love this spot! The lemongrass pork chop was SO GOOD. Got it with salad instead of rice and a fried egg. The fried tofu bites are the perfect app.
No staff feel bad for the bartender who s whipping out drinks by him self like a robot. Food is good 3/5 Doesn t really have an identity as a restaurant. Would I come back probably not.
Delicious food, I LOVE the house-made pickles! My favorite menu item is the Shrimp Cigars, but I wish the photo shown on all of the delivery platforms didnt show so many. You only get 4 per order ($11) and that isnt exactly clear when the photo shows at least 8 or so. Otherwise no complaints, I love this place!!
I have not tried the food yet, but the drinks were good, and the service was excellent!
So tasty. Really warm atmosphere and lovely staff.
Definitely recommend a reservation if you want to avoid a wait. The staff is friendly and the food is great so it s worth the wait even if you don t make one. We got the disco tots and man were they good. If you like a good cheese to tot ratio, they re spot on. The menu has a lot to offer though so trust you ll find something for everyone!
Can t beat the happy hour food options. Cheap but also really good.
Been here so many times at different hours. It is one of the best places in the area to either have good food or a fun Friday/Saturday night. Cocktails are okay but some of them are actually really great: lychee martini for example. Food is actually quite good: the noodle dishes are my favourite. Will come back and would recommend!
Overall, a very disappointing experience. The happy hour gin tonic with elderflower is way too sweet and tasted flat, same goes for the house (red) wine. Dinosaur wings have barely any meat on them. The (gluten free) cauliflower wings are good. The chicken tenders are supposed to come with a salad, instead you get lettuce (without dressing). The Thai Basil Stir Fry is a lame combo of sellery and bamboo shoots fried in too much cheap oil, served with basmati rice, but without a sauce. The flair inside is nice but feels more like a dive bar with too many items on the menu. The wait was over 30 mins for apps and mains. To be fair, it was very busy that night, and we got a discount on our bill, the waiters are nice.
Great bar for happy hour Nice environment and friendly staff Recommended dishes
Excellent combination of Eastern flavor dishes and Western pub environment
Great little place to meet a friend, grab a bite, or read a book.
Their lychee martini is amazing! And ok entrees.
I was only there for a moment and some of the employees or owners were already looking for trouble giving us back looks
I would give this place a 5 (love the food, the service and the vibe), but they have non-sustainable plasticware as take-out containers. Otherwise, great variety of dishes and lots of delicious vegetarian options too.
Great little place, hidden from the craziness of Broadway. Great drinks and a chill vibe.
Bad service. Had to ask for silverware, napkins, and was neglected by server
Such a gem. Truly great food, drinks and vibes. One of my favorite casual dinner spots in all of NYC. Unique vegetarian stand outs: cauliflower wings and Beyond spring rolls.
Great food and in-person vibes but iffy online servicing system. I made an online order through their official website and was charged an extra $20 for a delivery fee when it was a pick up order (currently getting this resolved, hopefully soon). Save yourself the hassle and enjoy a fun in-person dining experience! :)
Layout/atmosphere *Stairs lead down to entrance of lower level of a building (no sign); Vietnamese restaurant; wooden tables/booths; round bar in center of room with TV; projector screen on far wall; tchotchkes on shelves; dog-friendly; covered outdoor dining structure in street on Broadway; tables on sidewalk on Broadway and Tiemann Service *Attentive Food/drink *Bangkok Mule (Japanese Craft Suntory Haku Vodka, fresh house-made ginger syrup, lime, Thai basil and bird chili) - Good; the ginger and the chili definitely came across *Vietnamese Papaya Salad (shredded green papaya with Vietnamese dressing + shredded chicken; low spice) - good; fresh ingredients; little heavy on the red onions *Vietnamese Rice Vermicelli Bowls [Lemongrass Shrimp] (fresh herbs, veggie fritter, homemade beef spring roll, crispy shallots & Nuoc cham sauce) - good; a lot going on in the bowl; shrimp & spring rolls stood out; noodles cooked well; sauce on the sweeter side
I don t know why I ordered soup In the summer but it wasn t good. I m sure they ll make it better in the winter and I ll give the place another chance. Happy hour is great and this place has many food option and good portions. Food
I went during happy hour and ordered a screw driver. When I asked to close out right away the bartender told me my total was something like 11 dollars I asked about happy hour. She then told me only well vodka is happy hour, then proceeding to make me a screw driver with well vodka. While doing so, she started to talk to another patron about how she has to be careful because I m trying to screw them over. I am not trying to get non-well vodka for cheap and rip them off. I find it rude for them to assume that of a frequent patron how jaded!!
Fantastic food. I had their Hanoi burger and my wife had the Thai Basil fried rice. Both were delicious and full flavor. The burger is one of the best in the area. Great vibe.
The service was awful. Food was bland. The only thing with flavor was the lemonade.
Amazing food and service. Great music and Asian-themed decorations. Always had a great time here
This used to be one of my favorite places. The food is always so good but the service has turned horrible. The bartenders are inattentive whether it s merely giving us water or utensils. We always have to ask. Then today there was a pretty big bug in my food. Of course it was taken off the bill, but there was barely an apology. I m not one to be a Karen but this was pretty unacceptable.
Recommend: DEFINITELY YES Upon taking those first few steps inside, I was awed at the vintage-chic beauty. The ambiance was amazing and the customer service one of the best Ive seen. The food was ok. Couldve been better but it was definitely good.
The drinks are always fantastic. Great place to hang out too.
Not your ordinary neighborhood pub - while it looks like what you imagine when you think pub, and the service reflects that welcoming hometown pub vibe, the Asian fusion-influenced dishes are quite yummy. You cant go wrong with anything on the menu, from the cauliflower wings to the massaman curry and the Thai basil fried rice. Its all delicious. The regular wings and burgers are also tasty. Their happy hour offerings are quite nice and, to my delight, they have a good selection of Japanese whiskeys.
2/5: A gastropub with questionable gastronomy and weird (negative) quirks I m reviewing this place as a restaurant, not a pub, as I didn t have a drink. Came here with my date on a Sunday night to have some plates for dinner. We ordered the Thai Yellow Curry Nachos, Thai Basil Stir Fry, and then the Chocolate Brownie. The Nachos were certainly interesting. First off, the yellow curry flavor was not noticeable at all, so Im not really sure why they re called yellow curry nachos. They tasted like pretty standard restaurant nachos, with chips + cheese sauce + shredded chicken. It wasn t really bad, but it was overwhelming. There is a ton of cheese sauce on top, to the point where it was a bit off-putting. We enjoyed it for a few minutes but stopped as we knew we d get sick. The Thai Basil Stir Fry was mediocre. Standard white rice. A few pieces of chicken. Weird-tasting pickled carrots. Lots of ginger. A side serving of nuts. It s okay if you re super hungry and need to eat anything, but not okay if you re looking for a good quality entree for $15. The brownie was, again, okay. Standard brownie, although it tasted a bit off, to be honest. Waaaaay too much whipped cream on top. Tasty scoop of vanilla on the side. But there were also blueberries alongside the brownie, which is something I ve never seen before. Strange. For all these dishes, we left them unfinished as we couldn t be bothered to eat anymore after a certain point. The service was questionable. The servers were nice, but the weird thing is they kept coming to our table about every 5 minutes or so, asking us if we were done eating. If we put our utensils down for a second to take a break from eating, they d teleport to us asking if they could take our plates or not. It felt like we were certainly being rushed - strange given that it wasn t fully packed or anything. Not great. Do note that it can get pretty loud inside - it is a pub, after all. If you re looking for a quiet evening, it isn t here. Overall, this place might be good as a pub, but as a restaurant, it leaves a lot to be desired.
Actually a really cool place. I was a little surprised at the menu. The atmosphere said British Pub, but the menu was Asian Fusion. I would have liked a Scotch egg and steak and kidney pie on the menu, too.
Food was great. Our server was less so.
Literally the best waffle of my life & it s gluten free!! Cauliflower wings were 10/10, lots of seasoning Dietary restrictions: Gluten free friendly
I placed an order online for delivery on November 30 2023 specifically asking that tomatoes not be put into my salad, since I ve developed an allergy towards it. When I received my order, a lot of tomatoes were present. Since there wasn t a way to directly contact Toast (the app used for the order) I tried calling the restaurant. I spoke with a new employee (she mentioned she was new) and she suggested I place the order again and that I email the managers since they werent in to speak to. I wasn t willing to risk more money being lost since they didn t get it right the first time. I hung up after leaving my contact info with the young lady. I decided to try calling back the next day to see if I could get a refund for that part of my order since I couldn t even eat it. I spoke with a bartender this time around and he also told me to email the managers since no one was in and to specify a certain subject in order to get their attention. He said they are very quick about getting back to people. I also decided to leave my info with him just in case the first message got lost. It is now December 6, 2023 and I have yet to hear anything or get a response after sending two emails this is ridiculous at this point over something that could have easily been fixed the night of, had someone decided to actually be at work to authorize it. So in conclusion, be cautious of ordering from this establishment because if they mess up your order, you are stuck with it and they still have your money .
Love everything about this place. Great twist on Thai food.
Good food
A perfect bar and restaurant for everything from casual happy hour drinks, to group dinner with friends, all the way to hosting a full holiday party. The cocktails are all great, but the food menu is spectacular. The fusion dishes are so cohesive and well made that you can pair hot wings with steamed dumplings and they absolutely work together. Save room for dessert because the rose creme brulee is incredible.
Great neighborhood little joint to drink, eat and hangout. Fabulous beer, amazing wings. Quite the spot!!!
Awesome food and drink in a great atmosphere. They were able to accommodate a gluten allergy with many tasty options.
We love the ExPat and visit every time we are in NY. The food is so thoughtfully prepared and delicious. And the drinks are great too! My kids favorite is the Curried Lemon Pepper Tofu Bites - and they dont even like tofu! I love everything Ive ever eaten here, but on our last visit I devoured the Vietnamese Papaya Salad. There are lots of veggies in all of the dishes which is really nice. Ive only eaten in, but I think this food would also work great as take-out. The servers and bar tenders were all really nice and attentive, and the decor is wonderful!
I really wanted to like this place but the food wasn t great. Went here for brunch on my birthday and it was disorganised and i had to send my eggs back twice & the thai iced tea tasted like chalk water. I ll maybe go back for drinks..
Love the veggie apps here - the curried tofu was delicious and I also liked the cauliflower wings and the mushroom quesadillas. Drinks were good too!
Great service!
Tucked away on a quiet side street between the 125th train entrance and riverside park. They have a rustic interior (wooden beams & booths, concrete floor) with a central bar and plenty of outdoor seating as well. They also have a projector that plays on a wall in back (Im unsure about special events like screenings, etc.). I really like the feel of this place as its quiet, has delicious food and their drinks are on par with a dedicated cocktail bar in my opinion. You have to try one of their types of cauliflower wings, they are just so so good.
The Expat presents itself as a very appealing night out with interesting food choices. However, the staff was fine and the food wasn t much better, fine. I expected there to be a bit more flavor in the stir fry I ordered but it just came out bland. Prices are a bit high. I definitely wouldn t say avoid this place but there s definitely better options around.
Very happy with the food and drinks. Everything my party and I had was delicious. Will be coming here again very soon!
Really cute place. Staff was very accommodating. They can make mocktails from the cocktails they have. We had brunch and it was delicious!
We had the firecracker wings, shrimp dimsums, chicken nachos, chicken burger, and Singapore Noodles. For drinks we ordered 2 LIITs (The Blue Drink) and 1 house lager. Everything was great except the Singapore Noodles - will not recommend that. Giving a 5* rating despite the really dry noodles because the wings, nachos and dimsums were outright winners! The Blue Drinks are restricted to 2 per person for a good reason and the staff was really friendly too :)
Their BBQ chicken is not consistent. Sometimes its good most times its not. I wont order from them anymore.
Absolutely gorgeous place, friendly, delicious, good price, I dont have words saying how good is this place, best restaurant for long time!!!!!
Nice quirky decor, pleasant enough service. Food was super bland (papaya salad, thai basil curry and shrimp dumplings) like super duper bland. They didnt ask about what spice level so maybe they left out the flavor for that reason? I was digging for peanuts just to taste something.
Great staff, very accommodating, inventive food. This place has been a fun place for drinks and food. Ive had all different meals here from brunch to late night bar snacks and its all been wonderful. Its a key place in my neighborhood.
One of the best restaurants I ve been to in NYC (of many)
We had a reservation and they didn t respect it. After waiting 45 min for another table, they asked us to leave the place in a very aggressive way. They leave us in the street with my pregnant friend under the rain.
Don t know how to cook medium Burgers, Ignorant of costumer service. William -bartender- Lacked of menu knowledge (maybe he was poorly trained ) and ignorance of costumer service. After waiting almost 25 minutes for the burgers - When we expressed dissatisfaction with our orders ( ordered 2 medium burgers and the burgers were cooked dry welldone ) he responded with a dull, superficial and empty attitude sorry for the inconvenience ; and gave us the bill. Apex s manager never have the courtesy nor politeness check on us.
Unique space. Wonderful space. Over priced happy hour, but what can you do...
I cannot wait to come back here. The drinks and the food were delicious and the atmosphere was amazing. I felt like I was on a Harry Potter set. So cozy and cute. I got the tofu pad Thai, spring rolls, and an amaretto sour. Highly recommend!
Come here every Friday after work with my coworkers and absolutely love the atmosphere and service
Strong drinks and great food, to die for cauliflower wings!
Jack fruit veggies and veegees options. Stiff coactails
Good food, big portions, surprisingly cheap especially for the area.
Its a tad loud and crowded for my taste, but certainly has an exciting atmosphere. The decorations inside are quite eclectic and so are the menu selections. If you are bigger than a group of four, make sure to reserve a table ahead of time!
I had the first date with my boyfriend at this cute place last year, and we re celebrating our anniversary at this place again this year. The interior is beautiful and food is delicious, service is warm and attending, overall excellent place!
A little bit crowded for such a small place. Pretty good prices considering the location.
Amazing food, amazing beer, amazing ambience! Why arent you there?
Worth the wait! Our food was delayed put the Food was all worth it. Plus customer service recovery with was great!(thanks Carlito) if you have Carlito you re in good hands. Great drinks! Must try the Bangkok Mule and the Singapore noodles
The Expat never disappoints! My husband and I went there for my birthday and enjoyed a most satisfying repast of Asian comfort food with attentive and pleasant service. I highly recommend this haven populated by students from places of learning nearby and locals in the know.
The best local bar, food is great, awesome atmosphere and priced well Vegetarian options: One of the only places I go as a non vegetarian and order the vegetarian options! Dietary restrictions: Lots of vegetarian options and very conscious about nuts and other restrictions

Arielle and Vanessa were amazing & very well versed in the history of the restaurant! My sister and I, being expats ourselves, felt right at home with the multicultural melange of flavours and the rustic decor. 10/10 would recommend. Vegetarian options: Lots of options!!!!
Best place I ve been to in this city. Such good vibes and love the staff there.
The customer service has been top notch, which is rare to find in New York City! Every server has a radiant smile and is super helpful. I will definitely be coming back here as much as I can!
This was my first time and it sure won t be the last. The food is amazing, prices are greatly reasonable, the staff were on point , and there is a very homey feeling that ties it all together. Vegetarian options: Have a few great options
Love it! It s my local hang Dietary restrictions: Love the ample options with chicken and vegetarian food
Good vibes, good food, drinks a little pricey but thats new york
Vegetarian options: My wife and I are both vegetarian and are addicted to your cauliflower wings. Most places have so little offer vegetarians and the ExPat offers so much. We love it here.
S/o Jake, Destiny, and Laura! Wonderful service :)) Vegetarian options: Yummy Dietary restrictions: N/A Wheelchair accessibility: Easy to access ramps
Sunday brunch review - please for the love of all thats holy, get some NORMAL milk or half and half or even coconut milk for the coffee. The disgusting milk /condensed milk combo we were served today was vile. And it was all we have . Similarly the omelette was slightly sweet((did you put that milk combo in it?) The eggs Benedict was good and the server was very nice. But I will never come back for brunch if you don t fix that milk situation. Ugh. Dietary restrictions: No non dairy options?? Really, in this day and age?
Great vibe, food and drinks!
Great food and an even better staff! Love the environment here!!
Little cute bar near Columbia Business School. Love the bartenders that are friendly and attentive. I will not say the drinks are cheap but you pay for the atmosphere!
Freakin LOVE this place! It s a favorite of mine since Columbia business school opened up early 2022. I frequent this gem weekly. Great people work here, the food is delicious and the beverages never seize to amaze me. Come to the Expat!!
