A nice gourmet little sandwich shop. you'll be surprised with our sandwiches, Create your own salad, breakfast and Hot food from a steamed Table, a varieties of hot platters. Come or order we are here to help you anyway we can. Service is our priority.
Underrated deli near Columbia University. Good value subs, you can even get complementary sides such as soup! I recommend the final exam, it is hearty and will make you ready for any upcoming tests packed with protein!
This hidden gem is a bang for your buck. Prices are incredible, food is tasty, and staff is the friendliest. Happy to have found this place!
I asked for a panini to go and wanted to eat it at the park and it was a complete mess when I opened the bag. Really disappointed with this place. And of course the put no napkins and no forks. Some of it ended on the floor because I was trying to eat it with a spoon. Looks at the pictures and you be the judge.
This place is what you make of it. They have everything you could possibly want. They can make to order (if you slow down and communicate clearly) - better for less busy hours. You can get their pre-made food or select their established sandwiches - better for busier hours. Choose your own adventure and enjoy a day off from cooking! They have a few seats in back - great for rainy days or to stop and slow down or have a home for a bit between classes/activities. Family, student, all people friendly. PS Portion sizes are generous and the soup is homey feeling!
This is my third time eating from subconscious. Although my coworkers tell me not to due to their bad experience like raw chicken given to two of coworkers twice. I still decided to give them a try today for lunch. This has got to be one of the worst places to eat around Barnard/Columbia college. I ordered the Pastrami and Salami Hot Sandwich. I work less than 5 min from this place. I order my Sandwich went to pick it up, as pervious review stated the customer service is on point but the Pastrami and Salami Hot Sandwich was a mess. The bread was so soggy, It felt like they dipped it into water and the meat you could not even taste it because of endless amounts of hot sauce the drown the sandwich in. I wish I looked at the reviews on Google and take into consideration my coworkers experience. NEVER AGAIN! How can an establishment keep running with so many missed opportunities to make things better. It's like the owner do not care.
The people that work there are kind. However, sandwiches are hit or miss for me. I ordered a pastrami salami sandwich with soup and I had never seen such a soggy sandwich in my life! It was messy and I truly believe they dunk their bread in water because it does not hold up well at all. I ordered minestrone soup which was just a cloudy broth like chowder with a few pieces of frozen peas, carrots and corn with celery. It tasted fine but I expected better. The sandwiches have generous meat fillings, but the toppings like lettuce and tomatoes are lacking. This was the case with their Italian sandwich, the tomatoes tasted old and the bread was unusually soggy. Maybe I am ordering the wrong food here, I don’t know, but it saddens me that a place with good front workers cuts corners like this because they know they’re one of the few establishments on the block offering lunch specials. This is the last time I buy from here, service is good but I expect better quality food, at least dry/toasted bread honestly.
I was greeted with such a welcoming smile when I went for pickup! If you ever looking for greatly priced meal that fills you up, don’t hesitate to try this place! I would definitely revisit here!
If I can give them a zero, I would. I used to always order from here but never again. I got a salad with breaded chicken. The chicken chunks in the middle were raw (pink and gummy). Also gave me spoiled cucumbers. Claimed it was the salad dressing that made the cucumbers turn clear and sour. I went over to show them in oerson the disgusting raw chicken and rotten cucumbers. The manager claimed the cucumbers were fresh. Smh. GRubhub gave me a refund and they offered to make a new salad but I don't trust them. I am not sure why the mamager hired inexperienced people in the kitchen who don't know how to cook. She also said she can't fire him because he is sick also that another cool usually handles the chicken. Smh. It was a circus. They were defensive and instead of apologizing that they possibly gave me food poisoning and will cover medical bills, they washed their hands off. Eat here if you like raw chicken and spoiled cucumbers.
one of my go to lunch places. veggie burrito is great
Cheapest place around the University area when it comes to great quality service and food. They give so much meat in their food and both chefs and cashiers are super nice!
I used an app to grab food from here at a discount not knowing what the dish would be. Omg. Freaking amazing. I will be returning to select from thier full menu. As a Spanish person this was seasoned to perfection. No bland food here. I had the chicken stew and the pernil plate. With salad
We went last year We love the place
The Avocado BLT is the BESTTT
Great atmosphere and prices. The sandwiches were super cheap and the taste was amazing. I got the chicken parmesan sandwich and it did not disappoint. It even came with a free cup of soup which really brought the meal together. I would definitely eat here again.
Bad overall
I ordered here for the first time, a turkey avocado sub. The turkey didnt taste like turkey at all it made me nausea I had to pick it out.. I decided to look through the reviews afterwards to see if anyone else had the same problem. Not to my surprise. Someone mentioned the pastrami didnt taste like pastrami. Wondering if this spot is supposed to be vegan? Or are they just selling us bad meat
Great selection of sandwiches, paninis and wraps. They also have hot food!
Great food, very happy with the portions. Wide selection of drinks and snacks
Worst sandwich Ive had in months. Just walk down a bock to Apple Tree Market for much better for the same price.
I stopped by this deli quickly to grab a sandwich for lunch. I ordered the chicken parm. I was surprised when I heard I would get a free bowl of chicken noodle as well. I sat at their counter and ate my meal. The chicken parm had a generous amount of chicken but otherwise was a bit dry. Overall, its a good stop for filling food. Vegetarian options: Theres a bunch of sandwich options and other convenience shop items
It hurt me.
Cheap place - a sub lasts two meals! Food is usually good - Recommend the aioili.
I ordered PhillyStake sandwich, Omg couldn t eat it , they don t know what is that, the meats was uncooked and you can chew them like a gum
Great! Been coming here for 15 years. I recommend the delicious IQ and Final Exam sandwiches.
Great food for the Buck!!
Food that is very budget friendly and wholesome. I will keep on visiting.
Really wanted to like the sandwich, as the staff is quite efficient and helpful. I got pastrami, egg and cheese on a roll. The egg and cheese is fine but the pastrami is not pastrami. It has a weird texture, not like real meat at all let alone NY pastrami. After the first two bites, I ended up picking it all off. Stick with an egg and cheese and you ll be fine.
Over priced and canoli are not fill fully. They are Only filling the ends for looks. I will never go back
I ve ordered three times from this place on seamless and it s one of my fav spots for lunch. Great sandwiches, and great service! Always fast delivery! One of my go to spots now!
Great place to get breakfast or lunch within the Columbia bubble. Very affordable for the neighborhood, most lunch and breakfast items are under $10, and portion sizes are large. Got a Greek omelet that came with potatoes and toast, counter staff was super friendly and service was quick.
Friendly staff & good food
Very nice Deli with a large variety of food. Hot a cold sandwiches as well a variety of salad and plates.
Pretty good value
The value of the food is excellent!
Subconscious catered my company picnic for 80 employees. The food was amazing. Delivery was on time and the staff was very professional. We ve been using them for almost 2 yrs to handle our catering needs in the office for a small team of 25 employees. However, catering for 80 in the park was a different experience which they met superbly! I would highly recommend the 6ft hero, breakfast set up, and guacamole, just to name a few!!!
Very disappointed where quality has gone. I was surprised it took 2 minutes to prepare a philly. No wonder. I gpt home and it was precut meat with gravy and onions. Truly awful and instant trash.
Grabbed a salad and it was delicious, staff were friendly and lovely too
My family and I have lived in this area since the 90s and recently the service and quality has went down. This was a good to go to back in the days. The sandwich makers now are rude and act annoyed to be working there, especially the man with the limp. Never coming here again.
Food was okay. A bit over priced Apple Tree is a better option. Cashier Maria is always so friendly and personable.
This food spot very Clean , cheap and delicious . I will recommend to everyone. Thank you.
Considering other stores in the area, its one of the cheaper places to order from, and you get a healthy serving of food. Ive ordered a handful of times from them, and enjoyed my food despite the less appealing appearances. Details I love and food recommendations: - you get free lemonade iced tea/soups with your order. You might have to ask for it depending on the cashier. - They cut their sandwich through the wrapping, overstuffed sandwiches are not messy to eat. - The staff is inviting and friendly - Their fries are divine. Very crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, a good amount of seasoning to eat with ketchup. The GPA sandwich is my favorite. BBQ paninis also pretty good. They toast it for you. BE CAREFUL they do not give you napkins OR SPOONS in the bag. If youre getting a soup ASK FOR A SPOON/FORK. The napkins are right there at the register I just forget to grab them everytime and suffer for it. They do offer you ketchup though.
delicious and affordable
Good value bagel and salad. Free soup comes with salad. My favorite place
Pretty decent for this price point. Will be a frequent visitor for sure
As a Columbia student, I used to frequent subconscious before the pandemic because their food, service, and friendly atmosphere were a welcome convenience on a student budget. Im happy to report, that hasnt changed. Keep doing what works and thank you for your reasonable pricing.
Such good prices especially with the cost of everything going up. And food is great portion for the price and always offered a free soup or iced tea. Everyone that works there is so nice. Even when it s busy they are quick and efficient.
Delicious omelet. Was wowed by the coffee here, and I take it black.
Got food from here using the app TooGoodToGo. It was easy to pick up and cheap, but I was somewhat disappointed by the portion size and the quality of the food was mediocre at best.
I had the salmon and rice...delicious
Wraps rock
I went there for the first time for lunch and they have a huge selection of sandwiches. I had a meatball sub and it was the best I ever had.
Generally not bad, but one time my food was prepared *very* unhygienically, which ruined it for me
So many flies today. Please clean up.
Their food is very good and so is their service
Sandwich was dry and the person serving did not give my choice of veges despite them being right there.
They are terribly understaffed, and as a result, have very slow service. Dont go unless you want to wait 30 minutes for a sandwich.
Excellent
Its nothing spectacular
Best bagels in NY
Good sandwiches, fast and friendly service.
Delis are perfect for breakfast, fresh&tasty. Pricing is fine.
Best for sammiches. They are so good. Im eating a modified CC Blue without the blue and with pepper jack, bacon, and pickles today. Its heaven.
I love this place!! They are the best!! I have been enjoying their subs since they first open down by CUNY college. Variety of everything. The chicken noodle soup is awesome!!
This the best place to get a sandwich
They made my burger just the way I asked them to and were very pleasant about it. They even joked with me a little when I paid, so I walked out feeling good about the whole experience. Nothing too special about what I ate, but it was good. The chicken noodle soup that came with my burger and fries (a bonus I was not expecting) was yummy too.
Good food great service friendly staff!
I ordered Yesterday Through Seamless and the Sandwiches Were Made at 1230pm, i Got my Sandwiches Delivered at 215pm When They Finally Arrived Both Sandwiches and Fries Were Soggy The Bread was Just A Disaster it Wouldnt even Hold the Contents. I called Seamless and they tried to contact the Business to get a Refund but there hasnt been a Manager in Till Today No Response They just offered me a free Sandwich, i Denied i Dont want Any Sandwiches From This Unreliable and Unprossional Business Ever Again
One of the few places where you can get hot sandwiches!
food is expensive and not good - so uh avoid
Huge portion of food. Fun name of sandwiches.
Great service and food. Def going back for lunch.
Great food!!love it
Very bad experience. Im a vegetarian and took the vegan wrap and they mistakenly put a chicken piece in it, which I found while eating. I asked them to refund me money and they said that they can give me another one. I said no and yet they gave me another one. Money and food both wasted. They also had poor chocolate cake that tasted stale.
Terrible service by one of the cooks! Weve always ordered from here through seamless or come in person and had great experiences. However, since you cannot longer order breakfast online, I came in person. The server who assisted me was clearly having a bad day and took it out on me. All I wanted was a breakfast sandwich and he kept acting annoyed and asking me the same questions over and over. Wish I would have gone to Joes instead. While our department enjoys their food, I will have to think twice about coming here again.
I dont understand why this place doesnt have better reviews. Maybe its because people just havent tried the right sandwiches? With that said, when I tried a couple of the vegetarian options, I thought it was very good. But once I tried their meat options, particularly the GPA and Final Exam, thats when I was sold on how great this place is. The Final Exam is probably one of the best sandwiches Ive ever had, and if you eat all the meats in this sandwich, this is definitely what you should order. Otherwise, the GPA is also a great option. UPDATE: the quality of this place has gone down significantly over the last couple of years. :(
The sandwich here is superb! I recommend final exam. Its huge and I can eat for two meals. And the price is fair. The salad is great. Avacado and strawberry are so fresh
Made to order sandwiches with the occasional $1 iced coffee: delish.
An affordable option for salad, sandwiches, sweets, etc... The salad I got here was amazing and I will definitely return in the future.
I ordered the chicken fajita panini. Compared to 5 years ago, I feel the taste has dropped. Panini was not hot enough. Do remember to ask for the panini to be grilled longer if you prefer it hotter.
The food maker cut a decent amount of raw beef, then used the same knife to cut my wrap! Will not come back anymore, disgusting...
Good choice of subs and salads. Affordable prices, and they offer 10% discount for students and professors of Columbia. Ask if a soup comes free with salad.
Just an overpriced bodega that services Columbia kids, get a slice next door
Those are some delicious subs. Perfect for hangovers or just a greasy lunch craving.
Absolutely awesome. Nuclear wrap & Lifeguard are out of this world so far. Will be going again shortly.
An awesome place for budget salads
The wait is a little long, and the space is a little crowded, but the subs are some of the best in NY, and the free soup is a nice touch.
Lots of choices for sandwiches and salads made to order. I had the Twice as Nice which was tasty. Got chips and soda to go with it. A little pricey. Pretty quickly made if you re in a time crunch. Staff was pleasant.
Ive been here a few times. Their subs are okay, but theyre really not a stand out from the average deli, which is a little disappointing from a place that claims to specialize in them. If youre a Columbia student, remember to ask for the discount.
They are known for their subs and their subs are SUBPAR and tasteless. The free chicken noodle soup was disgusting as the chicken in the soup had blue color dots. I threw away the soup immediately.
I adore Subconscious! They are so warm. I can t believe how fast they are able to work.
The wife of the owner of this business is extremely mean. I pity the people who work here especially the delivery guys. This woman basically has the owner ( her husband in her back pocket) that said.. Its a go to place for students in the neighbourhood. Just a regular spot. Thrives best for quick breakfast bites in harlem. Not excited to recommend. Their so called muffins and cakes spend weeks in the self. Sorry to say.. coffee machine dead on arrival. My opinion though... yours may differ. Good luck!
Quick service but over priced.
I got the final exam . Lunch time is best because it comes with soup. The price is decent and service is good enough for deli. The fish is a bit salty.
Great food lots of variety and reasonably priced. Sad that they havent reopened their 140th location
Surprised this place doesnt have a higher rating. Great food and very good price. 10% off for Columbia students
Delicious and massive subs. Didnt love the cookies.
Food is excellent, staff is nice.
Greasy food.
Overall, really good location (close to Columbia and CSSW). Prices are really great! $2.18 for a large iced coffee- and while it wasnt the best ive ever had it was definitely worth the money. Their bagels, sandwiches and food are very reasonably priced!
Quick and good lunch place for anyone in the Columbia University area. Columbia students and employees also receive a discount. You get a free soup with a salad or sandwich purchase. The soup changes every day.
The bread I bought was over date and got mildew on it, highly not recommended.
Great sandwiches and clean place
Open hours are a lie. It s 7 pm on a Saturday. Not open.
One of the best places for awesome variety of sandwiches and free soup ;-)
Limited Vegan options. Super greasy. Not value for money. They did not have the soup they advertised for. Disappointed
Awesome sandwich!!!
Out of the five times I went there, three times they bumped the price up one or two dollars. I like the food and the price, but not when they charge you more than expected. The woman cashier is terrible. She doesn t even know the price and tried to bump up two dollars and got angry at me instead. Also she charged two dollars for a 1.25 dollar coffee. The one dollar discount if you show the columbia ID card doesn t work as well. One time they charged me one extra dollars for showing the ID card. It s not a big deal so I didn t say much, but it just not great when this KEEPS happening. They should definitely learn more math before opening the store.
Large selection, but the sandwich was pretty bland.
Dinner specials where each sub comes with soup makes for a great deal. Final Exam & GPA are both delicious. Get some onion rings.
I love the sandwiches here. They are fast, delicious and affordable.
Great place for sandwiches. I recommend to try the final exam sub!
Even in very busy times, you can get quick and cheerful service. Sandwiches and soup here are delicious!
Friendly place good food fair price in this area
When I do not know what to eat, I probably will eat a sandwich, and Subsconscious has helped me with that dilemma on a few occasions. Their sandwiches are also quite good when they are not coming to rescue me from being brain-dead with hunger or tired or whatever.
Got a vegan wrap. I liked it but it was very small for the price. I had to wait a little longer than you would want in a quick bite spot. Oh, your clothes will smell oily the whole day after you wait there for 5 minutes for your sandwich.
Vegan wrap with provolone and falafel. Plus a Brooklyn crafted ginger beer and fires with chipotle 14.99 Cant beat the service.
Not a bad place to take out some sandwitches. Decent menu selections.
The service here leaves something less than desired here. Apparently the prices arent the board arent the right prices. Sandwiches seem to have gone up a dollar from what is posted. I didnt see the sign about price increase anywhere. The sandwiches are good but definitely not worth almost $10
Cool deli near Columbia University. Expect to find any and everything from sandwiches to bagels and unique spreads. Great place to go for a quick stop before running to class. The prices are also very reasonable. Although, the vegetable cream cheese I had on my bagel one time didnt taste too well.
The cooks will treat you with respect if you approach them with a smile (as you should), but if youre on your phone, or are rude, expect similar service. The food is above average, the cashiers are very friendly, but it can get busy (expect at least a 5 minute wait during the breakfast/lunch rush).
Pretty okay place for a sub. Theyll make it however you want, and theres a great set of options. Vegetarians are out of luck here -- youll end up with a pretty sad sandwich. But hey, you made that decision. Better than Subway, thats for sure.
Decent (if somewhat overpriced) sandwiches served at the end of a long line/ wait. If you are pressed for time, consider calling your order ahead.
Spinach salad with chicken, cheese bacon and 1egg cost me $14... no wonder this franchise is being fazed out. This use to be my spot...NOT ANY MORE .
My first time going the food was great. They do not have seating which the reason for 4 and not five stars.
Good, not great subs. Nice soup special, normal prices for NYC. If youre looking to eat for under $10 and walking by you should stop by, although its not the best place around
This used to be a good place. Good sandwiches, not pricey. After a reform (owner changed?), they recruited so many new staff, who are not good at making sandwiches. This lowered the quality of the food. They also raised the prices.
Their hot sandwiches are pretty stuffed for how much you pay.
Huge selection of hot and cold sandwiches. They also serve breakfast options. Not a lot of seating inside, so large groups will want it to-go.
Great vegetarian sub. Had many grilled veggies.
Their burgers are superb!
This place is definitely one of the worst places to eat near Columbia. Not only is the food quality incredibly poor, but the service is also just as awful. Dont ever think of asking them to cater since they will show up late and bring only half the food you ordered while charging you the full price. In conclusion, just an awful experience all around.
great, convenient. There was a time that the day would not be complete without going here for some $1.50 coffee or a sandwich. The sub is the best deal; for $1 more, you get double the food. You cant sit down here, though.
This sub shop is fairly convienent to columbia and has good food. The structure to order is somewhat confusing and the shop is fairly cramped. The food is on the pricier side but the options are many. often has a long wait from order to payment.
Ordinarily sandwiches, pretty quick turn around. If you are right there, try it once. Not a place to walk for though with other sandwich places(CrackDel anyone) pretty close by.
Its a little crowded and sometimes they arent that friendly, but the food is good and prices are reasonable. Bagels are great!
