Jägerhof Restaurant in North Vancouver

We were excited to come dine here. Having grown up with German food on a weekly basis and a friend from Germany we booked a reservation. The four of us were excited knowing we had a time limit so we thought theyd be expeditious with good service. The Gentleman at the front greeting those with reservations warmly and informing those without would have to come back around 8 / 8:30. As an analyst I picked up on the mildly passive aggressive tonality of his voice. Politely but loudly letting an elderly Asian female customer know that Face masks are not needed at this establishment and having to repeat it thrice before the lady realized she shouldnt wear her face mask. She looked confused and a bit hurt by his sharp words that were delivered in a loud smile.... that exchange did leave me a wee bit on edge. I began to wonder what was next. Besides, we were already seated and had begun ordering. Very much happy with our table service while I was listening to the gentleman at the front guiding people in. The regulars were greeted with friendly banter of familiarity. All of whom were older. A senior like me but different. Yes they were regulars. For which I had thought to myself. I really want to come back for more. Our group chatted about the food and happily ate our meals while discussing things about life in Munich and family overseas etc. Chatting about our memories of weekly Schnitzel nights at home with cabbage and sausages and when we were good kids wed get to have strudel. Night of making spaetzle over a pot of boiling water and cooked on the pan with gobs of cheese. So the dishes brought back fond memories for all of us. Even my partner who is Japanese. It reminded her of the days her mother and uncle would reminisce of their days in Germany back in the sixties. So she was excited to be able to dine here as much as the rest of us. We did notice that we were waiting for quite some time after we finished our meal for the desert menu which came when they reminded us our time limit was about up and that the next reservation would be coming soon but may be a bit late. So we had time to order desert. Once we got our final part of the meal. That said Gentleman at the front happily greeted the next reservation who very loudly, almost mockingly that they have arrived and we were to vacate our table asap. We were all shocked and rather embarrassed. It was as if he picked us out from the crowd because of our skin colour. Was this the case? I certainly hope not. Suddenly I didnt feel welcome at all and frankly was quite off put by his abrupt behaviour. Sure their place is busy and yes most clientele are older and. But I felt something that I hadnt felt in a long time. Not since the sixties and seventies. I did let the server know of this and she said she has heard this before. Maybe hes just a character like the Soup N from Seinfeld or the Angry Waiter from Int. Chinatown. But this was different. Or maybe he just has a lot of stress. Ill leave it at that. But I wont be coming back despite how good we thought it was to come here. It was disappointing that we may have been profiled after my observations of said Gentleman in his dealings with certain customers. So it pains me to write something that started so promising, short of feeling sick after our dining experience and needing a much deserved walk for recovery. So 3 stars comes with a generous heart after much deserved contemplation.

On my top three list for best schnitzel meals in BC. Excellent dinner and wine, and wonderful atmosphere with live music. Smaller restaurant that felt a little tight but definitely worth checking out.

Being going to Jägerhof since a long time and Im happy to see that they were able to keep the quality overtime. Always busy so reservations are a must. Service is very professional, food is excellent and really tasty, portions are generous, ambiance with Johnny at the piano is awesome! One of the best restaurants in North Van! Never misses.

My father used to own this place, all I can say is that its been improved in every way possible besides price. That is the prices, this used to be an easy and cheap meal. Now its fairly expensive to say the least. Standards have improved but the cost of tems skyrocketed, when you could get a decent meal for cheap in this country is gone. Not throwing shade at the new owner, Im glad hes having success.

As an entrepreneur myself, I understand, respect and greatly appreciate amazing customer service when I see it. This restaurant continues to meet and exceed my expectations upon each visit. The quality of the food and how quickly it is served is unmatched for the industry. The owner of this restaurant truly knows what hes doing and it does not go unnoticed. Well done once again and Im looking forward to our next visit!

Ein tolles Erlebnis in North Vancouver: super leckeres Essen, geschmacklich wirklich sehr, sehr nahe an den Originalen aus der Heimat. Die Atmosphäre/Gestaltung ist genau so, wie sich Nordamerikaner Deutschland, Österreich und Co. vorstellen - bis hin zur Kuckucksuhr. Zudem eine super nette und aufmerksame Bedienung. Unterm Strich absolut empfehlenswert.

I have tried to call for reservation. But they ask me to leave a number to call back when they are convenience . Well eating is not that important for me, So even they may be the best in the world. I will not bother anymore.

The food was astonishing, the service top notch and the atmosphere fun. The piano player was fun and the beer was tall and cold. This was our first visit and we will be back.

I m left wondering whether I should go back and bump all the places I ve given five stars in the past down to 4 because of how much Jägerhof just raised the bar tonight. That wasn t just a dinner we just had; it was an experience One that is increasingly rare. The epitome of hospitality. Everyone who worked there seemed to absolutely and genuinely love their job. It showed in the quality of food and perhaps more importantly, in their interactions with guests. Thank you for reminding me what dining should be like.

Hospitality at its best . Warm , welcoming, cozy , it was like coming home. Very attentive staff, found space for our group despite busy Saturday. Very unique music and atmosphere add to the experience . Definitely coming back.

I came with my family and friends who are all European so it felt like home. The food was delicious and flavorsome, my toddler loved it too and Johnny on the piano was smashing! I recommend this place, we will definitely come back

It might be a change of ownership but this time, food was slightly under my expectations built based on previous visits my friend and i went for a famous schnitzel and ordered jager and Vienna schnitzels for some reason we both got a breaded schnitzels and his portion was with a mushroom sauce i might be wrong but i think real, original jager schnitzel is made just with flour and Vienna schnitzel with flour, eggs and bread crumbs. Maybe a new chef, who knows besides that, inside of a restaurant was warm for a summer day, like air-condition was broken or something anyhow, this will not prevent me to come back again for a tasty Hungarian goulash see you soon

Very warm welcome from Christoph, the owner. Despite many reservations, the two of us managed to get a table. The food was very good (and we know what were talking about - were from Germany :)). We had an amazing experience at Jägerhof Restaurant! The atmosphere was splendid and superior, making it the perfect spot for a fun and enjoyable evening. The German sausages were absolutely the best weve ever had a little bit sour, but wonderfully flavorful. The German beer selection was fantastic, and we found ourselves laughing and enjoying every moment. The live piano by 93 years old Jonny added a great touch to the overall ambiance. Highly recommend Jägerhof for a delightful night out!

Came in for a birthday, we had visited once before. Rebecca was our server both times and she is so personable and accommodating! Both times we dined here it was a full house, service was great with live piano, timing is more than appropriate for how busy the place was. Service, ambiance, and food was incredible. I recommend Jägerhof to everyone when talking about places to visit in North Van. Do not skip this hidden gem!

Awesome, authentic German food in the heart of North Vancouver! Recommend reservations by calling their phone number ahead of time as its a small establishment and very popular. I left a message and was fortunate enough that they had written my name down and gave us a table that had been recently vacated. The owner is extremely friendly and walked around engaging with diners as well as actively coordinating his staff to make sure that everything was running efficiently. An amazing example of how a small restaurant can excel. Everything we had was delicious!

Had a birthday dinner here. The Rouladen was exceptional. Friendly service. Eclectic German decor. Love to support wonderful local restaurants! First time sitting inside the restaurant, but I ordered several times in the COVID era. Thanks for the great food and experience.

This place rocks! From the moment we sat down outside, waiting for some more friends to arrive, we were warmly greeted, first by the host/manager and then by Rebecca who was going to take care of us throughout the evening. Both were genuinely friendly and super helpful. We were served delicious German cappuccinos and lattes which set the tone for the rest of the dinner. When the rest of our party arrived, we were ushered into the temple of schnitzel, wurst and beer. We worshiped properly and left very, very contented. Rebecca was amazing, food was delicious, company fabulous. If you ever dream of schnitzel, you know where to go! Thank me later.

One of the best things about Jägerhof are the owners, they went above and beyond to seat us when we didn t have a reservation and the restaurant was full. The food was also amazing, particularly the chocolate trio!

Ham hock was delicious.

My whole family is German. We can often be a very exacting, and difficult to satisfy people. Everyone, knows this is true, so believe me when I tell you, if you want a wonderful German style dining experience you cannot go wrong here. The restaurant is authentically decorated, staff are pleasant and knowledgeable, and the food is spot on excellent.

Service is actually terrible our server was friendly. Food was excellent. Waited 30+ to just get the bill. Waited 30+ just to be served. Waited 30+ just to get the waiters attention. Wish it was under better management. It was not busy at the time as well. Fun fact did you know Germans are famous for being on time. I think they are fakes.

Booked a reservation for 5 pm.Restaurant did not open till 5;10.The delay in opening was rude as there was 7 people standing outside to get in.We ordered a salad to start .There was a group of 8 that showed up.We ordered our main course ahead of the group of 8.It was taking a while to get our main.We then noticed that the group of 8 was being served ahead of us.I asked the waitress why they were being served ahead of us.She said you had a salad they just had main courses.Our salad was finished before we ordered our main.The schnitzel we both had was very tough to cut.And was not good.In general a bad dining experience.Save your money there are much better restaurants.

My BFF took me here for Bday dinner Feb 17th/23 Was so delish. Will def be back. Owners are fam friends of hers but I could quickly see that they treated everyone there like family. You must make a reservation!! We went on a Friday night and it was packed but comfortable. I had the cordon bleu schnitzel and it was so amazing I highly recommend it!!

Great place for authentic food. The Schnitzel is the best this side of the Atlantic!

Pretty disappointed with their lack of communication despite having a fantastic server. We had a group who came in to celebrate a memorial. We paid the bill without knowing that they had charged us for extra plates and forks, as we asked for them when we were sharing desserts. There was no mention of this extra $10.00 fee. Our group stuck to our own reservation time limit but the lack of communication was unwarranted. Not to mention, the gratuity was already included and the meals alone costed us over $300+. It is a cozy restaurant but its difficult to hear any sort of conversation due to the crowded space. The food was alright but definitely not planning to go back anytime soon.

I recently dined at this German kitchen restaurant, and I must say, it was fantastic! The Schweinsaxen was a standout, and all the other dishes we tried were equally delicious. But what really made the experience memorable was the cozy and welcoming atmosphere. It s the perfect spot for a tasty dinner and good vibes. Highly recommend!

For the cold night, we chose a wine bottle to go with schnitzel, would love to come back in summer to try with their beer. Happened to have live piano performance about 7-7:30, that was nice.

This place is amazing. I didnt have reservations, but the staff kindly squeezed us in after jusy 15 minutes wait. The staff were so friendly and sweet. The food was absolutely delicious and satisfying. Great quality!! The place is small, but the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. We really enjoyed the dining experience. I remember coming here many times as a kid, and I ve been back a handful of times in the last couple years. It s nice that it s still the same cozy and intimate environment with the new (not so new) owners. The food is always amazing. The service is quick, diligent and extremely friendly. I m always excited to return and get a delicious schnitzel or rouladen and a Holsten.

Ive been meaning to try Jägerhof for quite a while, yet somehow I couldnt make it. Now that I finally did, I can say Im definitely going back. The food was delicious and so was the atmosphere. Magda was delightful and helped us with some great recommendations. My friend and I tried the Jägerschnitzel, the Expo schnitzel, as well as their orange & vanilla mousse. Their soup of the day was borscht and it was absolutely delicious, too. Looking forward to our next visit! P.S. I wish it was easier to book (online).

It was like stepping into a restaurant in Germany through a magical portal. We scored a late seating and they were very accommodating even though I had 2 kids in tow. It was a really strange night because several things I tried to order they ran out or it wasn t available but we rolled with it. Our server - Heather (?) was so lovely, informative and apologetic about not being able to get us our first choice but made some fantastic recommendations for alternates which all turned out better than expected. My favourite dish was the sausages - they were springy, tender and full of flavour. It was a surprise hit for me and my baby. I tried to order the Hofbrauhaus beer and they were out of it - tried ordering something else they were out of that too so I ended up with a recommendation of Czechvar which worked for me - all beers came with 0,90l tall glasses which felt more authentic I tried ordering an espresso but their machine was broken so I got a fairly decent cup of black coffee at 9pm instead I tried to get their Bavarian chocolate mousse but that was already sold out for the night - craving some chocolate I was steered toward their Black Forest cake which was different from the BF cakes I had before. This one was flourless and had a texture almost like a brownie - I was pleasantly surprised. I also got a chance to try some apfel strudel (say yes to the ice cream add-on) and the Schweinshaxn (it was so-so but looked very picture worthy) We were the last group to leave but the staff were so kind and wished us a safe trip home in the heavy snow All-in-all the vibe, customer service and certain dishes were on point - I ll be back with other friends Also live music with Johnny Piano on their 100+ year old piano was pretty cool - one of the servers also was singing too at one point

I visited here recently for the first time even though Ive been living in North Van for 20years. I regret why I didnt I brought my parents here and we all loved the place. Awesome staff, food, atmosphere, live music. Big portions too. 3 of us ordered 2 plates + a side + beers, and it was more than enough.

Been coming here since I was a child, and it hasnt changed much! The area of Vancouver is now hip and cool and bustling with funky eateries, and Jagerhof is still trucking along with them. The food is delicious, the service is friendly and the atmosphere is very German feeling. I wish it was a touch cheaper, but I bet the rent in that area is crazy anyways.

Went to Jagerhof for birthday dinner based on my sons recommendation. Thumbs up to him as we had an excellent experience. Very friendly service from the moment we entered the restaurant, which itself has a very warm ambience. All of us were very satisfied with our food selections. I got a bowl of lentil and sausage soup to start and the bowl was very large and the soup was like a stew. Ended up sharing the soup. After that I thought it would be difficult to finish the main course, but the schnitzel cordon bleu was surprisingly light, so no problems there. It was served very hot and crispy, delicious. Wife and son also enjoyed their Swiss Raclette and Jager schnitzels. We finished ourselves off with creme brulee, apfelstrudel and Schmandmousse. Wheelchair accessibility: No problems, just a little tight getting through the entrance.

Was in search for a good Bavarian restaurant and had found this one. Decided to celebrate my birthday with my boyfriend here! Amazing food! Tried the pork hock and schnitzel for our main and had the apple strudel and black forest cake for dessert. Loved every bite! Unfortunately, I wanted to order 2 schnitzels to take home to my parents as I raved to them how good everything was during our meal and knowing they close at 10pm, I asked if we could add the schnitzels at the end of our meal which was 15 minutes before 9pm. We were told that they d already turned their fryer off and couldn t turn it back on as it s already been off for 30 minutes and it s cooled. Thought it was odd to turn it off so early during dinner service especially since they have 6 different schnitzels on the menu so you d think this is a popular item and many will ask for this. I m assuming anyone who walks in or orders after 8:30pm would be out of luck in getting a schnitzel! The server and owner, Chris, were very apologetic and were kind enough to take off one of our desserts on our final bill. Good to know for next time to ensure we go early! Aside from that, everything was great from food, atmosphere, and service. We ll certainly be back!

Ive been living in Vancouver for almost a year now and something I really miss is the typical German schnitzel with spaetzle and mushroom cream sauce. Decided for our birthday: were going to the Jägerhof! We were aware that reservations had to be made in advance because the location is quite popular. The ambience was great and the food was very German. The spaetzle were my highlight. Super delicious!!! For one evening you are transported back to the enjoyment of German cuisine with an ambience that reminds me very much of the Black Forest. My thanks go to the owner, who conjures up the recipes on the tables in grand-grandmother style, and to the friendly and very service-oriented staff. Well be back.

If you want to eat german, you are in relatively good hands here. It ranges from schnitzel to pork knuckle to spaetzle. However, the food is a little too little seasoned.

We arrived around 5pm last Thursday and were surprised at how busy it was. The owner at the door was very friendly as our server. The whole restaurant had a very tight-knit community feel and welcoming. With low lights and somewhat closely placed table, its very cozy and moody. But the highlight was the food. Ive ordered their Bavarian schweinshaxn. A slow roasted pork hock. The skin is nice and crunchy texture while good layer of fat between the lean meat. Simple yet flavourful. Husband got the Jagerhof platter, which is bit of sampler of all their meat offerings. The sauce accompanying was delicious. Very generous portion. We will return to try the traditional German pasta dish and schnitzel, it seems to be popular choice. According to our server the restaurant has been around for 42 years! Long time in Canadian standard.

A fun place to have a family dinner. Got here without reservation at 5pm but the restaurant accommodated us and we really enjoyed the food. The kids loved the food as well. Live music on weekend is a plus.

Food was absolutely delicious here. For my first time, I ordered the platter to try a bit of everything. The schnitzel here is unreal and when I went back the second time to order take out - I ordered the Jager Schnitzel. The Triple mushroom sauce is sooo good. Highly recommend their schnitzel and sauce. The also have this beer - a Weihenstephaner Vitus, definitely recommend you trying that if you like beer, I dont really drink beer but enjoyed the taste of this one that my partner ordered.

Had the SPÄTZLE, the pasta was very dry and stale, and the sauce was very thick and far from being enough.

I could cry over how good the food was. Everything we ordered was amazing. Sauerkraut they serve is the best Ive EVER had as well. I dont know what theyre doing in that kitchen other than miracles.

Amazing. I think one of the best parts of this place beside the food is the incredibly friendly and welcoming atmosphere that starts with Christophe. You will need to book in advance, probably 2 weeks, for a weekend sitting as the place is small but they also limit seatings so that the chef can focus on quality. And it shows. Don t forget to order dessert as they truly are real treats.

We visited this place for second time. Ordered chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce and it was amazing. Potatoes as side could be cooked better. We also ordered daily soup which was bacon and beans and it was mediocre , needed a little bit of spice. We had the chance to get there at 6 pm when Johny plays piano and makes the dinner such a fun and nice experience. Servers and management were helpful and nice too. I ll go again.

Showed up to eat 50 minutes before you close and I m told the warm kitchen was closed. Only cold food available Post your warm hours then so I don t show up from across town to eat.

No place should close the kitchen 45min prior to when the restaurant closes.

Place like home far, far away

This is the best spot for a German dinner. The staff are the best of the best, kind and the owner has a great singing voice. The food is simply delicious.

If you can get Melanie as your server, she is delightful. Ask for a table away from the kitchen as it gets too much traffic. The owner Chris adds to a wonderful experience.

Far to load and very annoying music from WW2 and okayed to load. This music is not played in Germany for the last 40 years!!! Not coming back!!! Food : 4/5

Me and my partner went to the Jägerhof for the first time yesterday. As Austrians, that only recently moved to Vancouver we were absolutely blown away by this restaurant. We order a Jägerschnitzel and a Wienerschnitzel and shared the alpine charcuterie plate as an entrée. Everything was delicious and the Wiener schnitzel was authentic. The evening was accompanied by live music and we enjoyed a few of their Bavarian beers. All in all a great evening and we will definitely be back soon!

Our Austrian family frequents this restaurant which is a testament to their excellent and authentic food. Great atmosphere with live music and staff were very accommodating of our family member with a wheelchair. Small restaurant, and it s popular so recommend booking!

We ve been coming to the Jagerhof regularly for years. The schnitzels, rouladen and other German/Austrian dishes are amazing and the servers are attentive and helpful. The atmosphere is also great, it s lively with the piano music, but not so loud that it interferes with your table conversation.

The chicken zurichoise had a rich and creamy sauce. My fellow diners ordered the pork hock, schnitzels, and spatzle. The menu indicated the pork hock takes approx. 20-30 mins, it arrived in 20 mins. Worth the tiny wait. Very generous portion of the spatzle dish.

Dined here 3 days ago. It was such a great experience I live close-by and it s so weird I never came here. Our server Melanie was amazing and passionate with great knowledge. The soup was very tasty, and entrees were great as well. Definitely will come back!

This place has a great atmosphere!! I didnt make a reservation and went around 5:30, but since I had a reservation for 7:00, they told me to finish eating before then and showed me a seat. The servers are also really friendly I had schnitzel that came with red wine sauce (probably Wiener) and Swiss raclette schnitzel with lingonberry sauce. The lingonberry sauce wasnt bad, but the red wine sauce that came with it was more delicious. It tastes like a thin fried pork cutlet, but the sauce is unique so it tastes different. I really recommend Baron Bohemian for beer!! Its a dark beer, but it doesnt have a bitter taste and has a sharp taste... Its really delicious. Enough to buy it at a liqueur shop

I was so excited to try this resto institution in north van. We were a party of 6 for a family members 86th birthday- and it was a splurge night for us. The food and service was excellent. Here s the catch they advertise live music on fridays starting at 6pm. We were so excited to see the alpine clad band set up. Then the band members went outside and smoked in front of the very open window and door no music and no sign of the band even starting by the time we left at 6.35pm and their cigarette smoke wafted strongly around our table while we ate. Double insult to us. The food and service is amazing but please do better for air quality and advertising the actual start time of your band. We were so disappointed on a special night out. Boo. :(

I finally brought my family to have dinner at Jägerhof last night on New Years Eve. It was a spontaneous decision since we had just left the Capilano Suspension bridge and were looking for a place to eat. I wanted to try this restaurants for months now but since we live in Richmond, we could only try it when we are in the area. We arrived 15 minutes before the restaurant opened at 5pm. There were only my family and an other party of two girls waiting outside. By 5:57pm, there were at least 10 parties waiting with us. When the owner finally opened the door to ask us for our names and reservation time, I told him that we didnt make any. So one by one, I watched as he let the other parties through the door because they all made reservations. After everyone else was seated around another 15 minutes later, he surprised my family with what I felt was the best table in the restaurant, the only window seat suited for a family of four. The food and hospitality was absolutely impressive. After months of anticipation, the mouth watering pork hock with sauerkraut was exactly what I had been craving for. We also ordered a couple of bratwursts on the side and some German beer and a Vienna Apfelstrudel for dessert. We couldn t possibly have had a better experience for a New Year s Eve dinner as we did last night. Everything was perfect. Thank you Jägerhof for providing us with such a wonderful dining experience.

Great place for dinner with a friend. We could talk at a normal volume and the food was authentic and very tasty.

This is a second time I ve been to this place, wonderful as usual. I just wish they offer more time openings. A bit hard to book a table but we still managed to get in.

Dont even bother coming, he will kick you out of the restaurant with a condescending tone because the restaurant is full and the owner refuses to even answer the phone for reservation. Never met a single restaurant owner who doesnt like doing business.

It was one of the best nights ever in Vancouver. We went there for our friend s birthday. Our server was amazing, the atmosphere was so good and cozy. We like the live music. They are open only couple of days, but it s definitely worth to wait for a spot. Thanks for everything

I save this place for special occasions, the food is spectacular, the atmosphere is a quaint, and the music is always special. 6 stars, never change, never close.

I made a table reservation one week before my birthday, I came only with my son. We moved to Vancouver about a year ago because of the war in our country. We chose this restaurant because there are good reviews and it is located near the place where we live. When reserving a table, they clarified about my birthday and said that they had made a mark, but when we arrived, no one congratulated me, and it was a shame to see another person being congratulated on his birthday at the next table. There was also no live music, we came at 8 pm. In general, it was the saddest dinner for my birthday. The food was delicious, we paid about $150 for two including tips

Service and atmosphere is fantastic. However the food........ Lets say if we crave German/Austrian/French Alps food, Ill cook it myself. Whats the point if everything aside from the fried Schnitzel tastes blend? Unseasoned and dry spaetzles is a crime. Same for the charcuterie plate which needs a massive improvement, would have had the same industrial pre-cut sausages and bland ham from Costco. Glad people love this restaurant looking at the reviews. Not sure if it truly celebrates the cuisine its supposed to represent.

Excellent food and service

Sadly, this will be our familys last time at the Jagerhof. We had booked a table for my fathers birthday on Dec 21. A large party of 10, which eat and drink a generous amount. From the initial booking, it seemed like a bother that we had wanted to book such a large party as we would be taking up the entire restaurant! A few of our party were delayed by the weather, and no server had come to even take our drink order at 5:30 when we had booked. Finally we ordered, and was delighted with our meals, as the food is always top notch. We enjoyed the meal and asked for dessert, which we were greeted with the reply from the server, You better order quickly, as we have another party coming. Basically saying the next group of customers were more important than us!!! Weve been coming here since before Chris took over, and was very surprised to be shuffled out this way. Needless to say, we did not order desert, and immediately asked for the bill. Our server came back, and said they were re arranging the restaurant so we could have our dessert. No thanks. Normally Chris comes over and checks on each table to see how the experience was, but tonight all he seemed worried about is how many customers he could jam in the restaurant before they close. I dont think he looked up from his piece of paper with the reservations on it he held so dearly. I love the food here, but this experience and complete disregard for loyal, repeat customers for over 20 years is inexcusable.
