Cafe maxims is a bit of a hidden gem, specifically their bakery section. The pastries and food with a decent variety, but the true boon is their almond meringue cakes! Its a staple and tradition for my wifes birthday every year! The only minor issue with the place is the dining sections seems a little dated.

A small cafe/tea room/bakery. Excellent lunch was served, though the menu was small, and the baked goods are exceptional.

The Maxims birthday cake my daughter bought for me was really not delicious. It was hard and too sweet. Every time I ate the cake before, there would be no leftovers. This time no one wanted to order more. It was really disappointing.

I had a great time and felt like I was in Hong Kong. The food is delicious and I highly recommend it. The cake is delicious!

Every Saturday night, they have karaoke, with a 5 people band from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Nice place to have a wonderful dinner and listen to music.

Really bad experience. They require you pay with cash for $25 and under, in a time where cash is almost never used anymore. Complete waste of time.

We bought the Chestnut cake for $32, but unfortunately, the sponge cake was stale, dry, and hard. It seemed like it had been sitting there for a long time. Although we ate the Chestnut paste, we had to throw away most of the sponge cake due to its poor quality. Moreover, we felt uncomfortable due to the arrogant attitude of the female staff. As a result, we have decided not to visit again.

Very comfortable and quiet place. Service was very good. However, I think the food was a bit overpriced. Having said that, their desserts (different kinds of cakes) were pretty good.

The cheesecake is amazing, the taste, texture, and even the way the cakes decorated are all fantastic. Honestly before entering the cafe, I did not expext such a good quality, because from the outside it does not look fancy, but I am so glad that It tried it, and for sure it would be added to my favorite list. I should mention that I ordered a cappoccino, I could say it was ok and I expected them to serve it in a more beautiful cup ;) but overall it was great!

The food portion was very small. I ordered a filet mignon, the sauce was very salty. The other dishes we ordered also not so great. The price we paid wasnt worth it. The best part of the dinner was the cake but nothing else.

Not much service

Ordered the Black Forest cake. It looked nice on the outside, but the taste was disappointing. The sponge was super dry and they used raspberries instead of cherry filing. It was sour and unappetizing.

Desert was ok, I thought it was the famous Chinese dessert store The waitress were not warm, and they only accept cash or debit card. Not too much special, the desert I bought is primarily short cookies

Steak sauce is too salty in general.

Arrogant attitude and incapable to admit mistakes. Cake has been preordered almost two weeks prior. On the day of pick up, they just inform the cake is not available. Instead of finding out whether the order has been missed, they blame customers for going to the wrong location. They even said the boss did not make the cake preordered due to ingredients not in season. Come on, it is obvious that the cafe just wants to sell off what they have made rather than what we have pre-ordered. What a disappointing experience. Your other location (16th and Bayview) has way better service. I will for sure switch to the other location from now on.

Yesterday was Xmas day my friend got a mango cake from this place. It was horrible. I never taste a cake that poor Quality from a commercial place. Any of the supermarket is a lot better. The cake base was like mixed with sand. So dry and course. And too sweet. So disgusting. No body wanted to finish that little piece of cake. The box so ridiculous designs you can t put back into the refrigerator so big and flimsy. Just throw it away was the only option .don t want to keep it anyway. This place Not even deserve a one star. I would recommend you guys go anywhere else to get your cake.

My family has been coming here for years. They are a cute little cafe that serves food and has a bakery. Our family favourite cake is from here- the meringue with fresh cream and strawberries or mango. I have relatives that come visit and specifically want to eat the meringue cake. Highly recommend this cake! Please note they only take cash or debit. My kids also like to look at their large fish tank.

Bottomline: order their meringues cakes for your next big gathering. This review is only for their Almond Meringue cake. The flavour is good but dont expect any fancy french dessert. The amount of toppings you get can also be inconsistent. I suggest you order whats predominantly in season to avoid not having enough toppings. I ordered the mango meringue cake one in the summer and one in the winter and the latter had less mango than the former.

The waitress was very friendly and the food was good, especially the desserts.

Unfortunately, I did not have a pleasant time here. The customer service was terrible. I dealt with a lady at the front and she was quite rude. She refused to answer my questions or provide more info. There is no price list of individual desserts. I would not recommend.

Let s just say . DO NOT come to this place, the cake tastes horrible.. like HORRIBLE, the cake is soggy and the cream tastes sour, the fruits were bad and also sour, they only accepted cash for orders under 25, and had a minimum of 5 dollars each when there are underage children. The cake feels like they were not fresh and were there for DAYS, trust me do not buy from this place, you ll regret it.

Writing this review specifically for their strawberry almond meringue cake. I haven t had anything else from this bakery or cafe other than the strawberry meringue cake but it s absolutely delicious! It s very light and very flavourful. It s always a popular dessert at any function or party. Everyone always asks where I got it from. It was introduced to me/us by our sister in law. This cake is so good there is never any left over. Highly recommend. Because of the popularity you have to place an order ahead of time to avoid disappointment as they re sold on a first come, first serve basis . That s the downfall of it all. As you cannot get the smaller size portion of the cake unless you go there. If you want a guaranteed cake you have to place an order and that s only for the bigger size cakes. Parking: Lots of parking in the plaza

While their meringues are good but its quite pricey. They have extremely poor customer and phone service. I was about to pick up the order but decided to call them back and cancel it. Not worth the time and money.

The almond meringue was a big hit for our Easter family dinner! Very crunch and light. Everyone loved it!

The food tastes good, the sesame cake is delicious, but the 18% after-tax tip is included directly in the checkout, rather than being chosen by the customer. There is a band performance on Saturday, and the atmosphere feels like old Hong Kong.

Delicious meal and they were able to seat my entire family. This was a wonderful place to celebrate. I got the chicken curry, and tasted the lamb. Everything came out great. We ended the meal with the selection of cakes. The meringue cake was the perfect sweet treat.

Their meringue cake is good but I found their mousse cake too dry. Beware if you have allergies. They put bits of pistachios as decorations on a mousse cake after I specifically requested and ordered a nut-free cake to go with the meringue cake for my kids with allergies.

This place has everything! Cafe, bar, restaurant, bakery, live music on Saturday nights - what s not to love? We stopped here on a whim, tried several pastries (all of which we liked), and had some coffee too. Excellent service, would love to be back to try some of their food.

I have not been at this restaurant since the beginning of the pandemic. Surprising, I ended up having dinner twice in one week. The restaurant has a limited menu but they are served in large portions. You do get value for your money. The restaurant is relatively quiet and comfortable. Considering that this restaurant was once well known for it bakeries, some of the allure is truly lost. The choice of cake for the set dinner is limited and they were average. This is not to say that the cakes were not good, but I have tasted better from Maxims in their golden years! It just seemed that the set dinner entres were much better than the cakes.

My husband and I went there on Saturday with live band music. The band is fantastic, strongly recommend any one to go on Saturday evening. Reasonable price and good quality of food.

I would honestly give a 0 star overall if I could. The food has majorly declined in terms of taste. I went here with my aunts who cane over on vacation and I have been have many times pre-Covid and the food and service was amazing but I haven t been here since Covid hit and wow it has gotten so much worse. I went there on a Friday afternoon there was only our table at the restaurant so very quiet and not busy at all. When my aunts and I were ready to order I kept calling the servers over (two present and the lady owner was there at the cashier). One of the staff was texting on her phone and the other saw me call her over but she wouldn t even respond or look up. The lady owner was just standing there also ignoring my call to order. It took us 15 minutes just to get our orders placed because no one was willing to take our order. When the food arrived it was all cold. We mentioned to the lady owner and she could care less. Overall the customer service itself was horrible. The food quality was horrific and taste was meh. Would definitely not recommend and not go back. The staff and owner gave off an entitled and rude stare couldn t care less for the customers. Honestly for the price you are paying for their food, you can find better elsewhere

This place is cash/debit only. You can only use debit if you spend more than $25. Theres also a minimum $5 charge per person. Service is not at all what you expect from a cafe in Toronto. The ambiance is nice though and they have live music Saturday nights apparently which was the only good thing about this place when we were there.

We came here for lunch and were not disappointed. With our large party we were able to sample most items on the lunch menu - everything was delicious and portions were generous. The ox tail was wonderful. The staff and owner were incredibly attentive and accommodating for my family.

So today my family and I ordered a cake for my cousins birthday the cream had a bad smell and the cream tasted sour never coming back here again. High price low quality. And the cake was supposed to be fresh like fresh cake doesnt have SOUR cream. I probably have food poisoning rn cause my stomach hurts idk just never buy from here

Merengue cakes are superb!

Okay pastries had good fillings but stale filo dough. However, what I really took away from my visit was the terrible customer service. I walked in and asked for 10 mins if they took card for payment as I didnt have cash on me and was told yes. Then when I go to pay the same server looks at me weird and asks for cash, completely unaware of our conversation not 10 seconds earlier. To avoid the awkward situation I went to go get cash. When I came back to pay and let the staff know they shouldnt be saying yes they take card when they have a spending limit. I wouldnt have placed an ordered otherwise. The owner looked disgusted at me for asking such a normal question and simply shoed me off like I was unimportant when letting her know she and her staff were not clear. I came here for pastries on a Sunday afternoon but got a subpar coffee and a shameful experience. Will absolutely never be back for brunch because of this service. Safe to say it was my first and last time here. TLDR; If you want to enjoy your day, please dont come here.

Cake was great but service was not. Had their orange chocolate truffle cake. I called to order a cake and a few days later when I went to pick it up I was told they sold it... So I had to wait extra 15 minutes. I wasnt shown the cake (in hindsight I should have asked to check but I was running late because of this) and found out the birthday boys name was spelt wrong even though I made sure they got the proper spelling when I made the call to order.

Recommended by a friend so I gave it a try. Soup and dessert were fair, but the main courses were really disappointing. The grouper tasted like a rubber and the lamb tasted weird. It doesn t worth a try!

We had a blast at this restaurant in North York. The food was very delicious, amongst the 10 of us we all enjoyed and found it was outstanding with the price. The server was very professional, with $6 extra our dinner even included our choice of their cake which is outstanding. Planning to go back, soon!

Bump into this recently open Cafe and Patisserie. Selection are quite limited. Wish they had indicated that there is an increased for pastry when you sit-in - like $2 more for a price of cake! That is certainly not the way to do business by deception. It seem they also do cooked meals for lunch and dinner too. I guess one should be prepared for a BIG bill at the end where there may be surprised charges.

Love their cake, bought them like twice a year. Updated: tried a matcha cake from t&t the other day and the cake and everything tasted much inferior to the matcha cake offered here. You never how good something it until you compare it to something inferior. (Photo is chestnut cake)

This place made the best fruit flan. However I stopped visiting this place after the following unpleasant experience. On a sunny day, I entered the store and noted one fruit flan left in the fridge. The attendant who offered great service asked me what help I needed. With no hesitation, I ordered my favorite fruit flan. In the midst of packing the fruit flan, the attendant was called away. The attendant came back shortly and told me that the fruit flan was no longer for sale as the female boss held the fruit flan for her friend. Clearly this is not the right way to treat a customer.

The quality of the cakes has deteriorated, and the waiters are attentive and polite. However, a customer happened to order and left the cake counter. Another neatly dressed lady (maybe the boss) had a condescending and rude attitude. She was rude throughout the process. After I bought the cake, I told her He said no, and left without responding.

This is a very subjective review. Cake was pretty good and tea was in a teabag. No issues. Unfortunately, they had live music on my visit Saturday night. The quality of the singing was karaoke level. So it was a bit grating and loud so harder to chat. Just dont go when theyre doing live music.

I can say Cake is the great one in town Severs or staffs are friendly and hospitable. But manager or owner I guess needs to be explained what customer service is. I will tell all friends won t come here. It s disappointing me a lot. I drove 45 mins from downtown to get this kinda service!

The birthday cakes at Maxim s Cake House are delicious, especially the black sesame mousse and matcha mousse six-inch cakes. We will eat them at least once every one to two years.

Maximes makes the best cakes in Toronto! Their almond meringue is legendary. Anything green tea flavored is also always unique and delicious. Maximes will also make you a beautiful custom cake if you are having a special event. The staff are incredibly friendly and speak multiple languages for your convenience. Definitely go try this Toronto gem!

Pastry and cakes here are usually not too sweet, and they use fresh cream on their cakes and its always so delicious.

I usually go there for the lunch special and have been ordering the braised beef rib, which comes with soup or salad, dessert and tea or coffee. It was tender and juicy, except the portion size has decreased, possibly due to the pandemic. The desserts are consistently excellent. Please be aware they automatically add a 13% gratuity on the bill.

Good food, great value and a Hong Kong style Patisserie out of this world. Prices for lunch include home made soup or salad, huge entree, coffee or tea, dessert of the day and gratuity. The meat was amazing, veggies were a little watery. I highly recommend the mango meringue cake with Hong Kong milk tea! 5 stars.

Service was great but unfortunately where i sat, it wasnt to my liking in terms of cleanliness. Food was not as good as 2 months ago. The desert display was a mess. So much crumbs everywhere.

The meringue cake has been my favourite for years. Drove far to get the piece of my cake. Sorry to say the service seemed different which was poor and the attitude was mean. Surprisingly all meringue cakes were gone at early evening.

A mistake

This is to review the AMAZING Almond Meringue cake they have here. I absolutely love this cake. It is not too sweet, and the cream is very fresh. I dont think you can find any other in Toronto! Maxims Cafe & Patisserie has been here for over 20 years and I still remember the first time having the Mango Almond Meringue cake and I was blown away. But because it is the winter now, and mango is not in season... I ordered the Strawberry Almond Meringue cake instead of a birthday celebration, and everyone at the party loved it :) Other than Mango, Strawberry, they also have Mixed Berry, Blueberry, and Mixed Fruit?? Im actually not sure about the Mixed Fruit lol. I might have heard it wrong on the phone. They sell this cake in 8 (6-12 people) and 10 (8-16 people) and I think you can also customize the size if you want to go even bigger (like a slab). I went for the 10 for $35 and I added a chocolate plaque with a message written on it for $0.50 more. You can walk in to purchase or you can place it order on the phone to have the cake reserved for you. The cake shop is in the front section of the cafe, and there are plenty of other types of cakes available too! Just wanted to share :3

HK style cafe/ restaurant in 1970s years, I assumes. There should have been changed in ownership and management, crews in the past few decades. The white puff-shaped cake is very, very sweet! Much sweeter than loblaws cake, very greasy! It tastes really bad and the service attitude is very impatient! This meringue strawberry cake is too sweet for adults and children! Not recommend it for anyone! The cake can give you sweet tooth! The waiter s were very rude!

This café is famous for its cakes and pastries. The variety on the food menu is not great but has some nice selection. Other than lunch and dinner, this nice and quiet place is also a good place for afternoon tea. There are 2 fish tanks in the dining area and I enjoy watching the fishes swim. There is a big turtle there today.

Both sit in and take out is available. Cakes are good. We were there on a Sunday evening, had live music.

Probably the best bakery in the Willowdale area. The restaurant section at the back is quiet and cosy. Food is good and prices are readonable. Best to spend the evening over the weekend when they have a 3 members light band playing oldies of the 60 & 70.

I didnt personally go and dine-in, however, the cake wasnt fresh at all. We pre-ordered a fresh fruit cake and what we recieved was an extremely stale cake. We decided to give it a try again today, we ordered a tiramisu cake. The cake was once again, extremely stale and the cracker that is usually on top is soggy. The most unpleasant thing was getting to the strawberry, as it was broken and pretty much shriveled up. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant location if you are looking to order quality cakes because what you get is simply disappointing. We have ordered from this restaurant from a different location (9665 Bayview Ave, Richmond Hill,ON) and their cakes have never failed our expectations and have continued to satisfy our needs for a few years now. Needless to say, we are very disappointed with our order.

I went to Maxims three times since Covid to buy cakes. I can tell you that they are really nice people over the phone and in person. My cakes were always ready for me on the day of pick up right when they open at 11:30am. Check out was smooth every time, cakes were packaged nicely in their pretty cake boxes. We got their signature almond meringue cakes and strawberry shortcake. Lovethe cakes they are so delicious!!!

The Napoleon cake is super light and fluffy. Really good. The store is pretty big. During the covid crisis, only takeout and they close at 7pm. Lots of parking.

Cake is wonderful

Their mango cake is really good but wouldnt recommend the tiramisu. It doesnt taste like tiramisu at all...more like some sort of chocolate cream/mousse cake. The service here is hit or miss. The restaurant can be totally empty with three waiters/waitresses and itll still take forever for you to get your take out cake because theyre too busy talking amongst themselves... Other times, there will be lunch rush but the waiters are efficient and youll be in and out in no time.

Visited this place before covid so therefore, this review is long overdue. But Didnt like the overall ambiance of this place. Its too crowded. You hardly have room between your table and others. The food is good, especially the cakes, however.

If the review had a zero rating , Ill give them that. Rude attitude by yelling customer, lowest quality for those bakery stuff. Why the restaurant is still survive during pandemic. If anyone I know will go to that place, block their way is good choice.

This protein cake is the most delicious

First of all, I have no conflict with anyone. The attitude of the employees was extremely bad, especially the older one who never smiled and answered no questions. Smile more during the epidemic and you will be in a better mood.

All staff are wearing masks, there is hand sanitizer at the front door and diners are spaced out. We had the Malaysian curry lamb and it was delicious! Meat was soft and tender with good flavour. Add $9 to the meal and make it a 4 course meal with the addition of soup, salad and dessert. Of course for dessert, we had their infamous meringue cake. Yum! Ambiance is old school Hong Kong style cafe.

We have fond memories of Cafe Maxims strawberry Meringue. Having one during these tiring times was a treat. We ordered one for a birthday celebration a few days ahead. It was crunchy, full of cream, almonds and had the right amount of strawberries. Ingredients were also fresh. It was also available for pick up at the time we agreed upon. Definitely recommend their Meringue if you have not tried one before. Sometimes one slice is indulgent enough. I recommend a tea or a coffee with your slice. Dont forget to ask about availability and seasonal flavours.

Absolutely love their meringue cake! Ive already bought 3 in the month of October alone for 3 different peoples birthdays and each have loved it! I really like the fact that you can choose your fruits: strawberry, mango, blueberry, or mixed.

Maxims recently made our wedding cake and it was everything we had dreamed of! Not only was it delicious but also beautiful. We are so happy that we chose maxims and would highly recommend! We get their cakes for all occasions and are never disappointed!

Maxims is a bit of an institution at this point. Having been around for nearly two decades, their cakes are still excellent and the place still a fun reminder of when COVID was not yet a reality. You can get individual slices or the entire cake or custom order for birthdays/anniversaries etc. A single slice with tax is $6.17 or so. I personally love their dark chocolate mousse but I know lots of people love their tiramisu or the various fruit meringues that they have. They also serve food which is apparently very good, but having never dined there, I cant comment. Give Maxims a try!

Ive been going to Cafe Maxim for their almond meringue cakes for 15+ yrs. They are my go-to cakes for special occasions, birthdays and family gatherings - everyone whos tried it, loved it! Also a huge fan of their Napoleon!

I recently had the pleasure of going to Maxim s Cafe. I was blown away by how beautiful this place is . I ordered the Chestnut cake and it was so delicious . I highly recommend going to this place. The food is great and the pastries are to die for. Thank you Jeniffer for the amazing service .
