Best authentic Korean Restaurant in Toronto.
I recently visited Apkujung Restaurant with my friends to enjoy some authentic Korean cuisine, and I must say, the experience was outstanding. Although I hadn't been here in a while, their food and service exceeded my expectations. We ordered their signature whole chicken course meal, which I have always loved. Shortly after ordering, we were served an array of Banchan (side dishes), all of which were delicious. The kimchi was a bit saltier than usual, but the other dishes were perfectly seasoned. After a brief wait, the server brought out a large pot containing a whole chicken in broth, along with various condiments. She first served us pieces of the boiled chicken, which had a mild, pure taste, allowing the natural flavour of the chicken to shine. For those who prefer a bit more spice, a small bowl of spicy sauce was provided to keep your taste buds engaged. The chicken also had ginseng, adding a subtle bitterness and health benefits. Following the chicken, we were served green noodles cooked in the chicken broth. The noodles, which I believe contained mugwort, were fragrant and perfectly cooked, showcasing their signature recipe perfected over decades. The meal concluded with a rich, flavourful rice porridge made from the thickened chicken broth. Although the server got busy and couldn't finish the porridge, it was still delightful. The final touch was a refreshing yogurt drink, which was a perfect end to the meal. Overall, the whole chicken course meal was exceptional, and my friend found it equally satisfying. The clean restaurant, great service, and delicious food reaffirmed my pride in being a long-term regular at this place. I will definitely be returning and highly recommend it to anyone seeking authentic Korean cuisine.
We ordered the spicy seafood hotpot and it was fantastic. There were many kinds of seafood and they were so fresh. I definitely recommend this place. Will go back here soon. Friendly server and great atmosphere
Well, the authenticity is still presence, but this time, the chicken had a bit of an off smell. The server seemed overwhelmed managing the tables alone, but she genuinely tried her best. I still stand by my previous praise and hope this was just a temporary setback. This time, we went for the whole chicken meal to let a friend try it, and despite the minor hiccup, we all enjoyed the experience. The quality and flavor remain impressive, and I'm optimistic that our next visit will be better. -- Continuing to visit this place satisfies our cravings for a whole chicken meal or spicy goat stew, despite a noticeable uptick in prices. This establishment holds a dear place in our hearts as the sole Korean restaurant in Toronto to offer a whole chicken course set. Its unwavering consistency over more than two decades is a testament to its dedication and excellence. Indeed, such a long-standing presence in the culinary scene not only confirms its legitimacy but also highlights its commitment to quality and tradition. It's clear that consistency is a cornerstone of their success, ensuring they remain a beloved choice for those in search of authentic Korean flavors in Toronto.
One of our favourite soup places on Yonge St. Recommended chicken ginseng soup and clam broth soup. The side dishes were delicious The soups are very clear and not overly strong or salty which we liked. Sweet and sour pork dish was not too good though. The meat was quite tough and hard to chew, and overly sour from orange’s juice.
Amazing authentic Korean restaurant. Tax free on cash payment! Spacious, small seating area. Homey dishes and hot pots. Some special dishes to note includes ginseng chicken with noodle and congee, black goat stew with veggies, Pollock soup and and maesaengyi soup. Great service. LLBO but not too extensive. They have your typical soju and makguli and beers.
Nice dining experience. I heard this is a privately run restaurant. The owner (I guess?) was super nice. He was helping us to prepare our dishes at the table. He told us in which order we were supposed to enjoy the rice and noodles. He even gave as a free dish as a bonus!
*Revised Review as of June 2024: Rating Adjusted from 5 Stars to 1 Star Recent Experience: Regrettably, I've had to revise my previously glowing review of this Korean restaurant, which was once a favorite of mine in Toronto. Despite the owners' commendable effort in employing young Korean staff for ordering and translation, there seems to be a disconnect that has affected the dining experience. Over time, I've frequented this establishment with various friends and, while often enjoying the meals, I've noticed an inconsistency in the quality of the food. Nonetheless, it continued to be among my preferred Korean dining spots. Incident of June 2024: On a recent visit in June 2024, my friends and I ordered the renowned chicken soup for two—a dish we've savored many times before. Upon its arrival, the portion appeared larger than usual, accompanied by a single bowl of rice, typically indicative of a meal for two. Considering we were the last patrons of the evening, I assumed it was a generous gesture from the owner to utilize remaining ingredients. To our surprise, the bill reflected the price for a chicken soup intended for four, not two. We promptly addressed this with the waitress, who insisted that since the food was consumed, payment was obligatory. After settling the bill, we sought to discuss the matter with the owner. In the owner's presence, the waitress altered her account, claiming that despite our request for a soup for two, the Korean text on the menu indicated "two chickens for four people," leading her to place an order for four, thereby doubling the cost. Our protest that we couldn't read Korean was met with insistence on payment for the consumed food. Exhausted by the back-and-forth and feeling sympathy for the owners, we ultimately departed. My advice to future patrons: if you're fluent in Korean, you'll likely enjoy the food without issue. Otherwise, exercise caution with your orders to avoid misunderstandings. Original Comment: Delicious food with good portion. Employees (grandpa & grandma) are super nice!
One of my favourite restaurant for authentic Korean food! The beef bbq meal is a must have and is more than enough for two people. Ginseng chicken is also very nice. The owners and the waitresses are very attentive. Note that additional side dishes do have a $0.75 charge. Debit card is accepted.
This restaurant reserved side dishes and sauces.
Parking: Food
k-chicken soup ur style ++retro ktownskiit! Food
They closed in 10pm, but they don t service people arrived in 9:20. Restaurant usually doesn t serve before 30mins till close time. It made people feel bad.
Amazing food with unique offerings, wonderful and friendly staff. My favorite Korean restaurant in the city.
My favourite Korean place with unique, authentic food options. Reasonably priced with big portion sizes. The side dishes are also so tasty that I d buy them alone.
Wonderful mom and pop Korean place tucked away between several other businesses. The best bibimbap Ive had since living in Korea, and the staff and patrons were super nice. I wish I lived here so I could try everything on the menu. !!!
Everything was good. But parking was difficult. It was uncomfortable.
We love having the chicken soup. It comes with green tea noodles (made in-house!), and porridge. The porridge has potatoes, substantial amounts of garlic, and comes out thick & creamy. The ginseng pieces seem pretty generous for the price too
Great food and service. A bit pricey but the quality of the food is excellent. I would definitely recommend and will come back!
If youre looking for authenticity and quality this place is great. Im looking forward to trying other menu items.
I ate Ugeoji-tang, Dogani-tang, Soft Tofu Jjigae, etc., but Ugeoji-tang and Dogani-tang had almost no ingredients (meat). The beef wasnt even cooked and the soft tofu stew was average.
It is a good place to tasting Korean style food.
Highly rate this place as a Korean! Had the pork rice soup and the stir fried squid - sooooo delicious! And the staff is so friendly. I didn t see any foreigners here, just Korean dads haha
I love it here --reasonable prices and amazing food. Lots of choices --and a guilty secret: their fantastic and generous portion of appetizers might be my favourite part! Vegetarian options: There are a few choices that should satisfy vegetarian patrons, I think. Kid-friendliness: There are usually quite a few kids and families in the restaurant and everyone seems happy.
Very pricy, worest is taste of the dishes. Never go back again.
I cant tell if the mesaeng is oyster soup or garlic stew. And the green onion pancake is really going to be in trouble if the recipe isnt improved.
Ellie s service is the best and the food is also so good. Must be come back!
I ve been here for a few times. This place is one of the best in the town to heat up your body and fill your Asian stomach in cold winter. Great authentic chicken/lamp/fish soup with very reasonable price. Will come back again soon.
Terrible, rude service, ruined my dads bday
The waitress was extremely rude and bitter for no reason. Yells at customers and up in customers face. And all this was because waitress miscommunicated with the owner and decided to take it out on the customer. Appaeently, this incident wasnt a significant enough event for the owner to fire her since its too difficult to rehire a waitress. For all of you considering this restaurant, just know that the owner thinks its ok for their staff to do all the things above and still continue to be working there. Never going back.
This restaurant doesnt even deserve a one star. I was verbally attacked and physically intimidated by a waitress working at this restaurant when I went to pick up my food order. The waitress shoved the menu into my face while screaming into my ears. This was over a miscommunication between her and the owner, about the bill. My husband followed up with the owner and he superficially apologized in a cool manner without really addressing the female aggressor. Im traumatized and shocked from this incident. I have NEVER been attacked by a restaurant staff in my life. I DO NOT recommend this restaurant where the owner allows and turns a blind eye to violence.
The food here was amazing! Very authentic. When they say spicy, they mean it. Loved everything I tried and would definitely go back.
Very disappointed. First time order Korean chicken soup and it s made from chicken thigh and wings. Not worth $46 for this leftovers. Service is good. Fried fish is good.
We ordered the famous Chicken soup only cooked with chicken thighs. It tasted like canned chicken soup.
The spicy tofu soup is average but spicy. What a pity. Actually, we should be able to do better~ The spicy fried squid is delicious, and the sweet and sour pork is also delicious~~satisfying Although the decoration is not very good, the service attitude of the store staff is very good! Like it and will come again
Goat hotpot, maesaengi oyster soup, and steamed red oxtail are so delicious..
rude service!
Good luck getting service here. Food is just as terrible.
One if my favorite Korean spots
Great Korean foods. Price reasonable.
The most authentic korean restaurant Ive been to, the owners are really friendly and the food just reminds me of my childhood when my grandma cooked for me
Delicious food, kindly staff, good price
Best goat dishes in town
Big portion and super delicious
The chicken soup was nice to have if youre craving something warm and savory. It comes with noodles and rice after the chicken is done, the Korean spicy sauce with chicken is something I always miss if I havent had for a long time
Excellent value and delicious!
The food tasted absolutely horrible. I went with my Korean friend, and she was shocked at how bad everything tasted. The only two things that were decent were the fish cake that came out as a side dish and the onions from the squid stir fry. The soup with noodles was absolutely terrible. So, please dont trust the five-star reviews. And its expensive... Good thing: the server was really nice, and I hope she can find a new workplace.
TLDR: Food was mediocre and not very tasty. They dont split bills Service was horrible. -- I came here with a close friend for the first time. As soon as the place began to get more customers the older waitress started harrassing us to eat faster and leave, when there were other tables who had been there longer than us. Her behaviour was absolutely unacceptable in other ways like slamming down dishes. She kept furiously walking by our table and give us dirty looks and made rude Korean comments under her breath. When we finished our meal, we waited for her, called out to her, and even eventually waved at her (nonestop where even other customers looked at us) for the bill...and at every attempt she ignored us. We had to come up to the counter for another serve to help us. Btw, THEY DONT SPLIT BILLS here, they honestly dont care.
This is a really good restaurant. Jin Hee-Yeong, who worked part-time in 2004 The tail gomtang was also really delicious. How are you? Boss, wife. I miss you. Stay healthy.
Good service.nice food. A little bit sweet
A+++
The service attitude of the aunt in the store was very poor. She just reminded her that the water in the bathroom faucet seemed to be unable to be turned on. She suddenly yelled at us for not being able to turn it on. When she placed the plate, it looked like she had thrown it away. Her face was dark and she looked very impatient, as if the customer had offended her. In fact, the food tastes very average, but the service attitude is really bad. I will not go there again.
bad service ever sudden shout at me with no reason. Food
So good!
Highly recommended I happened to visit there this Wednesday As getting cold, hot noodle soup is one of the popular food that warms me This place, especially hot chicken noodle soup is my fav! Tastewise it is absolutely good! If going along with side dishes( especially kimchi), it will make u guys on cloud9 for sure Not to mention to price, it is reasonable and affordable. Service wise, i saw two servers and i find them kind and friendly Actually u will be given yogurt for dessert it ends up ur meal perfectly:-)
There is a strange philosophy
Very good food and service.
All the food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable ~~
Amazing food and service. Love their family style cooking. Their seaweed side dish is to die for.
Ordered Chicken soup, but not totally cooked at all. Inside it is pink colour, and rice is not cooked too. Could give no star if I can.
Always tasty. Been eating here for years.
Amazing service, amazing food, amazing environment!
It s the best I ve ever had.
Fantastic sang gi tang! The noodle and rice congee after finishing most of the chicken in soup is the best pure and umami taste ever! Contains a whole chicken , noodle and rice in the set for 2 people. Maybe too much for 2 people. Recommend at least 3 to try the 2 people set. ,
Tasty food and friendly service!
mugwort noodle had strong aroma and taste it ruined the delicious soup. the soup was very good though... especially when they made porridge after eating the noodles
Good quality food and kind stuff
I went there alone and the owner was visibly unfriendly towards me. The food was not good. The worst thing is I got sick after I dont know why..
Delicious food!
A very nice family restaurant. Traditional Korean teast.
Dried pollack bean sprout soup is delicious
Went there ~40min before they were closing. Ordered the pollack stew. Very sizable for 2 with good flavors. The owner is insanely sweet and personable. We felt bad for staying beyond their closing time, but the owner encouraged us to stay and take our time. For a restaurant run by the adorable married couple, it definitely made me feel like I was in Korea at somebodys house. Definitely will return to try their other dishes and to support local businesses! Must try!
I always come here for the ginseng chicken dish. They never disappoint.
Great place to eat different types of authentic Korean dishes! The food was really unique and tasty! Especially their goat dishes!
Unfortunately, they dont allow table cooking anymore so they dont have any of the BBQ items, and the ginseng noodles and congee are no longer made at the table, however the chicken 3 way, and the seafood pancake was good. The kalbi was disappointing though.
Been eating their ginseng chicken meal for over 10 years! It is absolutely delicious especially on a cold winter day! Havent found another restaurant that serves it this one, but with a whole chicken, then a noodle soup, then a congee, its amazing value! The soup base is so yummy!
Loveeeeeeeeeee it Best Korean Restaurant FOREVER
The original korean foods and atmosphere in north york.
Besides the great food, eating here just feels like eating in a traditional Korean family. Everyone is so nice and friendly!
They need to know that pick up customers order first then do other tasks. I ve been waiting for 10mins to order my food. I told two servers that I am ready to order, but it seems like they always have other things to do.
Tried Ginseng chicken with noddle and congee. Love the soup/ broth. Congee was super flavour as well. The 2 people portion would be good for 3 people with another dish! Will come back to try more
Their ox-tail soup, chicken noodle soup, congee taste the best.
Slow and tasteless
It s rare for me to give a horrible review for a restaurant, especially in north york where there are so many good one, but man was this place awful We entered the restaurant to see 10 people standing inside (thinking this meant the food is great). No one was helping anyone out and they were all looking around for empty table they can sit at. A guy who appeared to be one of the owners walked in, walked past us and everyone waiting in line and cleaned a table for himself while everyone else was waiting to sit. They proceeded to make us sit at a large table with another couple, which is awkward enough when it s not the type of restaurant. After 10 minutes of waiting the waitress came by to take our order. I could tell it was going to be an issue when she barely memorized our order and didn t write anything down. We then received one order that was wrong 20 minutes later followed by one order for my wife. My food never arrived and they only realized it when my wife brought it up to the staff. No one came to apologize, no one seem to care at all I basically spent an hour at a restaurant to not be served anything. Horrible place. Horrible staff. Horrible owners/managers. Stay away from the food and the place. Go to daldongdae which is next door and superior to this place in each and every way
Worst service ever on earth waited for one hour for our soup the taste also normal won t ever come again
Boss is the best
All the food is better than what you get in Seoul. The chefs skills are amazing. It s neat and delicious~~
very nice
Food were very delicious and owner was very kind and attentive! Absolutely come back!
Experience Racism/bad service Came in on a busy Saturday night, three of us(Chinese) and a Korean couple was arranged at the 2 tables side by side close to the kitchen. The Korean couple was seated right before us (like 1-2 minutes apart) but we are treated extremely differently. We ordered the same signature chicken soup. But the Korean couple got their chicken soup 20 minutes before us. I was waiting for a waitress to come by and ask for stuffs(ordering, tea, refill of dishes) but they keep passing our table without making eye contact. But the Korean couple beside us was served proactively by the waitresses at a fast speed. At the time their table is at the last congee stage of the chicken soup, our chicken soup just arrived. I had to say Excuse me a couple times to grab the waitress s attention when they were serving the Korean couple beside our table. But still I was being really polite, using multiple thank you and can I at the time of asking. After the 3 or 4th times of excuse me , which I got ignored, I hear a waitress mocking my excuse me from the kitchen area. Which I feel is extremely disrespectful and we confronted them, the waitress with pink hair clip denied but I think its her. After that the skinnier waitress with a ponytail was nice and come by a couple times to accommodate us but the other waitress with the pink hair clip ignore us and never showed up again. When the Korean couple is done paying the bill, which is 1 hour after both of us got seated, our second stage noodle just came to the table and we have to cancel our other seafood pancake since it s too late and we just want to finish the meal and get home. I understand the restaurant is busy and it s hard to accommodate everyone at the same time. But being treated so differently comparing to Korean customer and being mocked by the waitress is really unacceptable.
I always get noodle in chicken soup. I go there very often and love their food. I think its a family owned business and theyre super nice whenever we go there. Prices are reasonable and the food quality is always 10/10. Love this store.
Grilled salted port ribs was not recommended and we didn t like , ginseng chicken was great as usual. lamb stew was not bad although I personally don t like the veggie inside.
Warm and healthy
I had the spicy korean agujjim, sooooo good I had to leave a review. I hope they do well during this pandemic.
I tried some goat dishes and stew. It was first time trying those food. It was good for 3-stars.
The flavours are amazing. A must visit! Get their chicken soup for 2.
The best Sam gae tang in GTA! The employees were well trained and the food are authentic!
Very authentic Korean place with excellent food. We got the kalbi, beef and cabbage stew, cold noodles, and seaweed soup. Stew was probably one of the best weve had and the kalbi was excellent too. Seaweed soup came quite late so the restaurant let us have it for free. Would come again to try their other food.
Authentic Korean restaurant
They have the best chicken soup! The congee was so good. The chicken soup for 2 is a must try!
Nice hot broth and chicken.
Absolutely the best!
Trip to toronto was great, and this place made the trip unforgettable!
Food worth 5, others are 4 stars...
Great food and service! Recommend the chicken soup!
One of the most decent korean food I have ever had in Toronto. Nice service as well.
This store is located right across centrepoint mall. Lots of parking spaces available close by. Food is amazing! We finished everything ordered! What we ordered: (sorry no pictures. Everyone digs in the moment it s served) Chicken with noodles and congee - the congee at the end was delicious. -chicken was very tender Sliced tender beef rib table bbq - the beef was so tender I d have it again! Braised short beef ribs - must order! Pan fried oysters and spicy fried chicken. Space is a little tight. But they do accommodate tables for 6-7 people no problem. Service is slow. They don t seem to have enough employees. Felt like I was in a French restaurant. Start with one dish and when it s finished, the next one comes up. They were really busy and we were there for a gathering. Even though their service is slow and food takes a while to get to our table, they were so polite with us. Apologized for the matter and still treated our table with respect. Filled up our tea when needed too. In all, I d come back here for sure!
Its just a Korean restaurant ~~ Everyones taste is different ~~ Its hard to evaluate it ~~ But its just that Korean restaurant ~~
Amazing chicken soup!
Best Korean restaurant in town
Food is very tasty. Highly recommended Ginseng chicken soup Appreciated with the services - help and cook with Korean bbq. Thank you
The OG Samgyetang place in Toronto. Their chicken is not the tiny little cornish one like others and the chicken porridge at the end is VERY satisfying.
The samgyetang is good. Alot better than the other places.
Its delicious and plentiful. My favorite restaurant!!
Best place for soju in Toronto
Authentic!
Good food and good price!
From the few Korean places Ive been to, this one is one I continue to come back tom ambiance, staff, all that is great. The food is super authentic. The sude dishes have some staples and some they change up to keep it interesting. The experience wont let you down.
100% Korean.
Hall wide, clean.. washroom downstairs.. not busy.. Korean food.
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!! I ve been to this restaurant for years and it was my fav Korean restaurant. However, the most recent visit has made me decide to not come here ever again. My friends and I found a bug in the chicken soup. When we talked to the waitress, though, she showed no apology nor attempted to make it up. We tried to negotiate for a replacement, but she said that would not be available and the only offer was to cancel the food. We tried to talk to the manager, who seemed annoyed but finally offered a replacement. I m so disappointment at them and will no recommend it to anyone who cares about their food safety/service.
If you are craving for authentic Korean dishes, this is the place that won t disappoint you.
The pork rinds and chicken soup are great. Love it!
A family restaurant. Nice seatings. Surprised that there s not many customers. Food not bad, staff are friendly.
So kind. The restaurant service was nice. The chicken soup was amazing and koreans pork was delicious.
Very delicious
Amazing place for a dinner! I ordered Chicken soup with my friend. It come with a big portion of soup with a whole chicken inside. After the soup it have noodles and congee as well. We ordered soup for two and we left a lot stuff. The side dish tasted so good! They offer toufu, kimchi, zucchini, Potatoes for side dish. Definitely will return this place!
it is delicious!
The chicken soup is the best in Toronto.
not that much bad , but not great
Average taste, recommended with chicken Beef jerky
I stopped by this place for a company dinner, and its a place Ive always wanted to go before, but I cant go there often because its far away, but the atmosphere is neat, the owner is friendly, the food is delicious, the service is good... and the bathroom is also clean. The parking lot is located in the mall across the street and you can walk there.
Authentic Korean cuisine. The owners and staff are very kind. After the first visit, I felt like I had known them forever. Service is tops and the food oh-so-good. I will definitely come here again. Generous portions, fresh ingredients, perfect!
Very good food, professional servers. But needs improvement in A/C, its too hot and humid when eating a boiling hot pot.
The smoked duck was really good!
Its like home food
Surprisingly great Korean food, quiet and very friendly staff. Will repeat. Edit: recently quality has dropped a bit, dropping to three stars.
Though we went at 4pm on a weekend, the service was a bit slow and a few times we had to reach out to the back to get their attention. Food was fantastic however.
Excellent foods
Spectacular Korean food!
Price doubled over the last 10 years
This place is suck. Dont go there.
Everything is delicious. Healthy food is also recommended. There is no smell of goat soup at all.
OK... But I have had way better at cheaper price
One of the best places for ginseng chicken! Very good service also!
gdgd
Regular Korean restaurant
The waitress was very nice and polite but the food wasnt good.
One of those go to place again. Its ginseng chicken food/soup, the best. If you have a better experience. Let me know. Thanks.
The side dishes are not very tasty. Food is OK. Facilities are old. The environment is poor. Meal delivery is slow
Every item on the menu is overpriced and expensive. $17 for korean pancake, $30 for a plate of chicken. Are you kidding me? Do you include gold sprinkles on your food to justify that price? The food also is subpar and the servers are rude.
Amazing real Korean food..
Delicious, fast, kind owner. We go every year when we visit from Montreal.
