Updating my review. 5 to 3 stars. I havent been to this restaurant for few years. Prior to COVID, Ive recommended this place to many of my friends. Re-visited the location, left with different impression. Cant recommend anymore. Not a horrible place but food and service can be improved. Maybe it was just the day Ive visited, I will give it a one more go later.

Good: kind server, tasty food of good quality and size for price, nice design inside, ample parking Bad: first time I ve had to pay for green tea when eating in at a sushi resto, plus ginger didn t come on our plate, and even though we both ordered rolls only one miso and salad for two. Our dumplings were still frozen inside but they were apologetic. I d go back but for take out.

A little overpriced, but the quality is top notch. Have not found anything close by that is nearly as good at a better price point. Beautiful presentation.

I had not eaten here in a long time. I came late at night and just ordered takeout. The food is still good, the service was great (they allowed me to order at 8:59--1 minute before closing the kitchen). I like the little Japanese style booths.

Today, around 4:20, I encountered a rude server. When I asked her about something on the menu and didnt understand her response, she raised her voice as if scolding me. I decided to leave without eating there.

Not bad for a local place. Good fish (albeit cut into too big a portions), friendly staff. The place itself is a bit meh though. The bar music is at odds with the general ambience. Could be so much better with some tweaks.

Do not go to this place if you happen to be part of the majority of the world that has children. They will force you to take away the chopsticks and then proceed to give you parenting advice like they know what s best for your children.Servers do not get to supervise my children. only concern was a lawsuit bc she said this happened to them before. Edit- the owners response fully emphasizes my review. They just want to tell you how to raise your kids like they know best- my kids can safely use the chopsticks for whatever they wish, including to JUST PLAY. How I allow my children to use chopsticks is NOT to be determined by the restaurant. If you happen to have a store policy where you don t allow children to use chopsticks, you should write that somewhere where it is visible for customers with children. After this horrible experience we went across the street to a sushi place ready to deal with children- they provided cups with lids, child safe chopsticks, and everything a family with kids would need. DONT GO TO THIS PLACE WITH KIDS! They ll try to make you feel like a bad parent & this response by the owner is a prime example.

Its good, but expensive. Most of the better maki cost 17 to 20 dollars for 8 pieces. Inflation really hurts.

And, as we say in Japan when something is incredibly good this sushi isn t just oishii (delicious), it s oishiiiiiiii with extra i s for that extra incredible taste!

Great food with a very quiet atmosphere. They are not very busy, so you can get for food very fast. The food tastes great and speaks of quality and love. They are a bit pricey for someone looking for a budget meal but if you dont mind dropping $30 then I would 100% recommend.

The food was good but the food came out very slow.

Ordered a $100 small deluxe party tray. Nearly all of the sashimi had tendon and scales not removed. This might be acceptable with a lesser quality party tray but not acceptable for a 40pcs party tray for $100. Very disappointed in the lack of expertise of the sushi chef with cleaning and removing these parts from the sashimi. I will not be ordering such an expensive meal from this restaurant until they are able to correct their mistakes.

The food took forever to come! We waited more than 1 hour to get our food! I wouldn t come again! Every table had to run and take care of their own soy sauce/ napkin/ or choose to have the service to come to them every 30 minutes! Ridiculous!!!

I have been here three times. The sushi is good, but whenever I order the cooked meals like chicken or salmon, the food is terrible. The salmon is overcooked and the chicken tastes like leftovers. They also dont give you very big portions for the price you pay. They try to hide it by putting the meat over a huge serving of vegetables. Once I paid over $25 for five pieces of sushi and a few cut up pieces of chicken. Also, a server told me I was using a dirty dipping plate, but then proceeded to dump the contents of the plate into my Bento box thus contaminating it. I was horrified.

If you are looking for delicious, fast and authentic Japanese food, this is your place to go. I admit I was definitely skeptical about the location of the place but I was immediately proven wrong when I entered. It was a large and exquisite place and I was seated quickly. The service was fast and the food was delicious, the menu had a large variety of options and everything sounded yummy. One of the items in my order was the unagi don, which was absolutely scrumptious. However if anything, I feel as if the taste of the vegetables in the unadon overpowered the flavours of the eel and rice. Otherwise, it was good! In the time we went, there was construction going on however by the time we settled down the workers likely went to their lunch break. I feel as if the location of the restaurant wasn t the greatest but you ll definitely be seeing me again.

Been eating sushi in Toronto for 20 years or so. Taking service, quality, and value all into account, I really can t think of a better place I ve been to. Staff and owners are all very nice and professional. Bravo!

The best place for sushi hands down. High quality salmon, tuna, etc. Ive been going to this place regularly for years with friends & family, & we love every meal. We typically have their sushi specialty rolls, but we have tried everything from their bento boxes to udons. Its a small restaurant & from the outside you wouldnt think it would be very good but dont knock it until you try it. Great food made with high quality ingredients.

I visited Hamaru Sushi numerous times and was impressed by the wide selection of Japanese-Korean fusion style. The private dining area were a nice touch and the price is reasonable. The only downside was that you had to purchase the tea separately. All in all, it was good experiences and I would recommend it. ============================================= : Bare minimum - I would not visit or use service again. : Satisfy - I would visit or use the place when I got a chance. : Exceptional - I highly recommend this place to everyone.

I wasnt expecting such a cute little space! It doesnt look like much from the outside but its actually pretty big inside, with the classic Japanese divided booths, and even the music and ambience were very calming and relaxing. Food was great; we had the sashimi boat and pork katsu. Since it was Valentines Day/busy we did have to wait a bit longer for the sushi, maybe like 20-30 minutes. This was fine since the katsu had already arrived so we werent starved. The boat had the typical fish youd expect, e.g. salmon, tuna, shrimp, tilapia, etc. but I was so surprised to see some fatty tuna (I think otoro?). It was sooooo rich, and tbh maybe too rich for me, but it was definitely unique. Service was also really nice. Our waitress was really friendly and polite and kept apologizing for the wait. Even before we got our table, she provided us with menus so we could look while we waited

Just ordered for the first time today. Got the Boston sushi and the salmon sashimi. The sushi was fresh and tasteful. The sashimi was large cuts of salmon. Definitely worth the price. Recommended dishes

Takoyaki portions were small. 7 half takoyaki for 10.95. If youre cutting them in half, how did we end up with an odd number? Karaage was dry and shriveled. I liked the sushi and service though.

Lovely little sushi spot in an unexpected location. Fresh fish with a good selection of rolls and nigiri. Perfectly cooked rice and ripe avocado. Good filling to rice ratio. Real plants in pottery centrepieces were a unique touch.

Best sushi place near the office

I ordered take out from here today. Sadly it was not a good experience. The japchae was old and mushy and disgusting. Could not eat it. And the crunch roll was unimpressive. 8 rolls, half of them had to be thrown out because they were covered in wasabi for some reason? Not sure why! But I am sure that I won t be returning here.

Very bad quality and customer service. I had been to this restaurant twice. The first time, on a house special roll, the jalapeño on top of the roll was wrapped with raw flour (not fried thru). The second time, the plastic wrap outside the crabmeat was not taken off. This is unbelievable!!

One of the staff told us we couldn t sit on the bar chair and the rest of the chairs if we wanted takeout. Then, I told her we don t want to because the chair down the hallway is too small and uncomfortable for two people to sit. She said you will mess the table and lie to us that they are going to mob the floor now so don t sit there. In fact, nobody mob or clean the area within the 20 mins when we are waiting for the food. She keep arguing with us even after I told her we won t mess the table so you don t need to clean it again until next customer. She looked reluctant and said something about us to the other staffs in Korean. As well, nobody asks us if we want anything to drink while we wait, as it s a basic courtesy a restaurant or staff should exhibit. A warning there for those planning to order takeout.

I first came across Hamaru when I was searching for a takeout place during a long weekend Monday. Their takeout food was exceptionally fresh and tasty. So that brought me back to dine in the restaurant last week. The service was excellent. The food was very well presented, a lot of thoughts had gone into the arrangement, extra subtle ingredients and more. The sushi boat was well packed with fresh and tasty sashimi, nigiri and rolls. The chef even included madai and other unusual fish in the sashimi, so it was definitely not your usual sushi boat.

i dont know why i ordered korean short ribs here, but i did as well as a few of my friends. didnt try the sushi, but the short ribs were honestly one of the worst ive had before. service was great though, restaurant was very busy and our waitress was still attentive. would maybe recommend for sushi/sashimi, for other dishes definitely not.

Literally my favorite japanese restaurant! The atmosphere inside is so chill, I enjoy coming here to decompress after a stressful work day and eating some excellent food! I have to recommend their Aburi Salmon roll - its so good! But honestly try different dishes each time you come here, theyre all great! The staff working here are also so accomodating and friendly!

Overall 3.5 Prices are slightly higher than what I would anticipate but quality is decent. Their salmon was at a good temperature and rolls had good ratio of filling to rice. Tempura was nicely battered and fried. Not overly oily which is good. I got the salmon lover combo which I do wish they had more variety in terms of what you get for the combos, but I guess thats the point of them too lol Nice spacious seating as well. Not too crowded.

As a Vancouverite, I was skeptical about eating sushi in Toronto, but my friend assured me it was always good at this restaurant, and he was right: it was some of the best sushi I have ever eaten! I had never had Butterfish sashimi and it blew my mind! The texture was, like the name suggests, like butter - so soft and unctuous! Mild in the fish sense, yet very flavourful, almost like... I dont even know how to describe it - I am HOOKED! We also had Hamachi and Yellowfin sashimi; both were excellent! The assorted tempura was absolutely perfect: hot, very crispy, perfect amount of crunch. The prawns were so tender and juicy! The veggies were perfectly cooked (at many places, yam tempura is often terribly undercooked, IMO). The other home run was the Diablo Roll, YUM!!! All the rice was perfectly moist and tender - very fresh; the flavour combination was unexpected and sooo delicious! I wouldnt have thought of putting pickled jalapeños in a sushi roll - it was subtle and punchy, all at the same time. Our server was very polite and helpful; she left us to talk and didnt bother us every 5 minutes, but seemed to be right there when we needed her. I will definitely be back - hopefully to meet my old friend there again next time! Parking: Their lot really starts to fill up, just like their restaurant, as the main dinner crowd shows up.

We usually enjoy this place when we dined in but on our recent experience we had ordered UberEats as a goodbye dinner. They had gotten our order mostly right but they had given us two orders of mixed tempura we did not order and did not give us one main we had ordered. That main was for the person going away. We called the restaurant to explain that our order was incomplete but they became defensive and just told us that it should be correct because they saw it packed. I dont know if that call happens a lot but we just wanted our correct order and did not like being accused of lying. She ended the call saying shed check and call back. We waited a bit before eating for the call so we could eat together but it was clear she was not going to call back. If the food was better than it was, I probably wouldnt be writing this but the food was just okay. A similar mistake was made at Sushi Ichiban but they handled it with more civility. They apologized for the mistake and sent an order of tempura for the inconvenience. They didnt need to do that and we wouldnt expect it to happen in any other instance but the most Id hope for in this case is an apology and for our order to be fulfilled. Wont be ordering or dining in again.

Their offerings are fresh and they know how to slice and dice sashimi. Give them a try! Parking: Youll be competing with the other patrons (as Hamaru is in a tiny plaza). If you get frustrated with the lot, park around the side!

I ve had sushi at many different restaurants in GTA and this location most definitely deserves praise. Ingredients are always fresh, menu options are fantastic, service is good, and you can tell there is great care and attention to detail. You know when a restaurant is good when every aspect of its operations is smooth, the staff are in good mood, and customers are happy. I can tell that the chefs puts great care into meal preparation. Even if you have similar ingredients at another restaurant, the results of preparation are not the same, and the taste of the food speaks for itself. On top of that, the price is very reasonable. I m floored, it s a great place to have a meal.

I ordered from this place, never again!!. After 2 hours, the order wasn t ready and I had to cancel. The lady at the restaurant, just laughed and said it s a busy night. Such awful service Food : 1/5

The decor is nice, napkins are real cloth, the food is good and the servings are generous. Service is attentive without being intrusive.

Did a take out. The food was fresh, and flavors were there. Service pretty friendly, my only complain were the portion sizes, but I guess it s the sign of times. Kimchi - wish there was a bit more for $10. Bulgogi - wish there was sauce or any side plates with it, only comes with miso soup and a scoop of rice. One of the few Japanese restaurants close by but the service is very soso and slow. We were sat down around 5:30 and didnt get any service in 15 minutes. No water, had to ask for the menu and when we waved down a waiter they kept ignoring us saying someone will be with us. We eventually left without ordering because of the horrible service.

We may have just found our new sushi place. To be honest I drive by this place almost every day and never occured to me to check it out until my accupuncturist told me about this place. Just to be cautious, I ordered a small set of makis and sashimi and they were simply delicious. High recommendation and I cant wait to go back and try more delicious sushi and also to see what they have that is unique and special

Giving it 5 stars for the value. Sushi is really good considering it s your local neighborhood joint. It s been around for a while, survived the pandemic, and they re still going strong. Definitely supporting small, local businesses. Good service as well.

WILL NEVER PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN. Ordered take out at 6pm. Told it will take 2 hours to be ready. Fine, placed order, went to pick up at 8pm and was told they missed the order. Ok, happens sometimes. Asked how long to make order? Was told I needed to wait another 30 minutes. I asked for them to make it right away but was told they had to make other orders first. They made no attempt to rectify the situation. Didnt even offer a discount. Not how you would like to treat your customers especially during a pandemic. Would give 0 stars if possible.

Excellent! There are a lot of sushi restaurants in our area and I cant believe I havent tried this lovely gem until last night. Very friendly staff! For takeout we ordered the large maki, sushi & sashimi party platter. It was fresh, delicious & plentiful. Their sashimi was the bright star of this order. We also ordered the Dragon roll platter that was very good too. This will now be our new go to sushi restaurant. Move over Taros Fish.

I had been coming to Hamaru sushi for over eight years and have been impressed by their quality of food, service, and friendly staff. Unfortunately, the ownership has changed in the past year and nothing has stayed the same other than the name. The food is lower quality, the ownership extremely rude, and the prices have increased beyond reason. I totally understand with high inflation that restaurant owners need to increase prices, but decreasing your portions in half and increasing your prices at the same time is unreasonable!! This place is not worth your time or money, a lot better options in area for sushi.

Prices were a bit on the high side and the portions were a tiny bit on the smaller side but the food was spectacular. I guess the pricing and portion size fall in line with the current covid price increases. One thing that kinda irked me was that you had to pay for the tea. I noticed other restaurants are starting to do the same but having tea with your meal at a Japanese restaurant should be complimentary in my opinion. Either way, $20 for donkatsu was worth it. If u dont care about paying for tea or drinking it with your meal, I recommend this place. They wouldve gotten 5* if the tea wasnt charged.

I live close by so wanted to try this place out. Spoke on the phone about the menu for a takeout order. The person i spoke with (i believe it was the owner/manager by the tone) made me feel stupid for not knowing the difference between their deluxe party tray to a sushi, sashimi, maki tray. Both consists of same. She continues to be temperamental and concluded with party tray is premium fish! and also the best part is its not available tonight after 15 min of listening to this person giving me the best impression over the phone. Thank you for the info, i will write a paper about what premium fish is before ordering at this place.

The crispy spicy salmon sushi was amazing. Definitely on the pricier side but makes up for it with the welcoming customer service and quality taste.

Fantastic food, friendly service (even during COVID). We just went back to dine-in for the first time since COVID started. Staff were just as friendly as ever, and the hot food came fresh and nicely plated.

Restaurant is not too busy but they don t give complementary hot tea or soup. You have to pay $3 for a small cup of hot tea. They kept the main door open because they don t want to run AC when it s 30 degrees celsius outside. Only one server with an attitude. It can be clearly seen that the restaurant is trying to cut their budget but overall food and presentation was decent. So giving 2 points for that.

They have the best shrimp tempura. Food is amazing service is great.

Haven t dined in for some time, but the takeout service has been great! Orders have always been ready on time and the quality of food has been high.

I am relatively new to the area and Ive been hoping to find a good comfort sushi place since. I tried this place twice, but both times i was disappointed. I tried the spicy salmon Maki and tuna avocado. The taste is ok, but God they are so tiny!! I understand that the inflation is affecting everybody but honestly the food looked like it had shrinked! Unfortunately Im not coming back. It wasnt worth the price.

We ordered delivery from Hamaru Sushi a few weeks ago. We had several House Special Rolls, a Sashimi Dinner and a Tako-yaki. Overall, everything was very tasty and fresh although some of the special rolls seemed a little smaller and slightly inconsistent than others.

Amazing food but they constantly get your order wrong and then either lie or blame you for it. They tried to tell me seaweed was salmon skin.... yea its unfortunate because the food is good but expect your order to be wrong

We were trying sushi restaurants near where we live. Hamaru was a pleasant surprise. Did not disappoint in food quality and presentation, or service. We were greeted with a bright and genuine smile which created a positive feeling, something that is lacking in a lot of dining establishments. It s evident that these are people that appreciate your business by using good quality ingredients. We ll definitely be back.

Amazing sushi. I am not kidding when I say it is among the best sushi in Toronto. Do not let the exterior or location fool you. We live near the Kingsway in Toronto (about 45 minutes away) with some very popular and well known sushi restaurants and happened to be in this area to meet some friends staying at the Pan Pacific hotel close by. The quality and freshness of the sushi beats any other restaurant we have been to. It is excellent. Love their range of teas and rolls - service was excellent and they were VERY nice. We would drive up there to go back in a second. If only we lived closer we would order every week!

We have been going to Hamaru for 15+ years but things have slipped the past few visits. Today was our last. Got home and the tempura was missing from both dinner combos. The terryaki chicken would be more aptly named cold chewy rubber chicken. The rice barely warm. Couple pcs of sushi had so much cartilage had to spit them out - have never had to do that with sushi anywhere. No longer the same by any imagination.

This place used to be my fav. I totally understand the challenge that small businesses and restaurants have, especially with their staffing, We had a very bad experience, as the restaurant was.really short on staff, but kept letting everyone in; they had a full house with only 2 servers. Most diners were very angry. I wont be going there again

Although expensive, the sushi is one of the highest quality Ive ever had. Tuna is the freshest and best Ive eaten. I know my sushi. I would def recommend this place to anyone who appreciates sushi.

Was my first time here, and would come again! The fish was fresh, and the tempura was crispy! The portions were decent for the price. The waitress kept checking on us to see if we need anything else and refilling water. Nice and quiet ambience.

One of the best spots in York Mills for high quality sushi. The staff are so friendly and accommodating, the dine in experience is really welcoming. When ordering one of their sushi boats, we asked if we could have a few substitutions and they went above and beyond to accomodate us and were very generous. Their maki rolls are a must try and their combination sets are a fantastic deal! We had their beef bulgogi combo set and was surprised by not only the quality, but the quantity of food it came with. That fresh tempura basket was to die for! This is a perfect date spot for when you feel like splurging on great sushi.

We come here for take out, definitely our go to place for good sushi and sashimi.

An outstanding sushi experience at the heart of Toronto. I had a chance to visit it with my friend recently. It had a friendly, pleasant, and quiet atmosphere. The waiters were very friendly. I decided to go for a sushi and sashimi dinner combo. The presentation was lovely, with sushi and sashimi arranged beautifully. The peak of the evening was trying tuna sashimi. The fish melted in my mouth. It was so tender and nice that I can t find the right words to describe it but advise you to visit this place. Enjoy and stay safe!

Food is nice, but service is really slow

Service to freshness, this was such an awesome spot for Japanese food! The fish was fresh amd the presentation of the sushi platters were so nicely done! Packed tightly and filled with garnishes perfectly made for a nice platter. Also had the unagi don and the unagi was nice and silky!! And the pieces of unagi, HUGE! The people working are super nice and very friendly. We already ordered in advance and as time promised, committed to fulfilling the order perfectly! Ordered the salmon teriyaki dinner box set heres my thoughts on everything: Tempura: crunchy and light, shrimp was fresh, veggies were cooked perfectly. both my wife and I loved it. Salmon: crispy outside, fluffy and light on the inside. Thicker pieces than other restaurants which made it taste much better. Salad: fresh veggies, the dressing was almost more akin to a vinaigrette, very light and tasty. Sushi: Hands down the best sushi Ive ever had. Period. The rice had so much flavor and the fish was incredibly fresh. It just melted in my mouth. You can tell the chefs are absolutely masters of their craft and care deeply about the quality. Overall the portion size was good for the price, the food quality was outstanding, the atmosphere was great, our server was great. My wife didnt want any shrimp tempora but when they substituted the veggies they even included a variety of extra veggies in it which no other restaurant has done for us before. We will absolutely be going back.

The Crispy Spicy Salmon is amazing.

I love their Haedupbap. The sashimi and sushi they serve was really fresh. The service was fast and they were very attentive.

My husband and I always come here when I want sushi. Food is as awesome as their customer service. I did a walk-in order today, went home and one item was forgotten. I called right away to let them know. I was offered credit but also offered to deliver.They were more than happy to deliver without any hesitation. I m one very happy and satisfied customer.

Great food service and prices. We love this place. Consistent in the quality presentation and taste. Very clean and solid covid protocols. Everything is in booths which also helps being private especially the traditional Japanese closed booths. Great service also and very friendly.

Had an amazing takeout experience. The sashimi was cut in decent thickness. Sushi pizza was tasty with the sauce and toppings. Definitely gonna go back again for more different food!

Great food. Always tasty, well made and well presented. This is like the secret hole in the wall place that is miles better than the rest.

Superfantastic!

Long wait to get your food if your dining in. Almost a hour and still no food or update. We ended up changing our order to take out. Take out experience was ok. Recommend to prioritize patrons who are sitting inside rather focus on the take out.

So glad to have found a good sushi place nearby! Tried their chirashi the first time we visited and found the quality and variety of fish to be very good. Second time, we ordered a tray - the tuna was a beautiful and radiant red, and all of the fish had a lovely texture - not soft and mushy, but firm and satisfying. We will be coming back soon!

5 star service, great, fresh food, and a very clean environment. Very home-y feel to it with very friendly staff.

Fresh and tasty sushi. Nice staff. It has Cozy family room if you like to be alone.
