Tent Kitchen + Wine Bar in Orillia

WOW. Blown away is the understatement of the year. Ive driven my this place many times and always wondered what it was. My son had a friend who raved about the food, so we decided to try it out last night for the first time. OMG, was it amazing. The bread knots were amazing, we shared some apps with the brussel sprouts, the Halloumi and olives and the mini meat balls that just melted in your mouth. The service was great. It was a Monday night and the place was quiet, but dont let that fool you, its worth the stop. We had a baby with us and Sarah the waitress brought us a highchair and even some wipes when things got messy. My test of a great restaurant, is the water. Dont let my glass get empty and Sarah was on it and gave us a bottle for the table . We had steak, Octopus and the burger for dinner and we were all impressed. Dave (the chef) has taken Downtown Toronto food and brought it up to 169 (south of Washago). It doesnt look like much from the outside (hence the lower appearance rank), but this is one of those examples where appearances are deceiving. STOP IN AND EAT HERE.

Owner /chef came out in person. Asked how we liked our experience/meal. Very sincere, straight in the eye. Home made sweet rolls were delicious, staff pleasant and knowledgeable. You get what you pay for and more. I do not do this very often but The Tent is absolutely deserving! Megwiich.

My husband, who is Torontos oldest senior softball player,.will be 92 on October 20th. David, the owner and remarkably talented Chef at Tent, prepared Norms favourite meal, Chilean bass for dinner last night which I ordered as a birthday surprise. It was perfection. Kayla, our attentive server, was delightful. As usual, dining at Tent is exceptional. This is the closing weekend for our little cottage. We hope to end this lovely season with brunch at Tent tomorrow. Never too much of a good (in this case great) thing. Norm says, This unique, off the beaten track treasure should rank in the top 10 places to eat in the world.

Just come here. You will not be disappointed. Great music, friendly knowledgeable servers and impeccable food. This place is an absolute jewel. Vegetarian options: The Eggplant sandwich was amazing.

First time trying this place.Nice atmosphere and busy.The menu could have a little more variety. But mostly I ordered the tent burger and the bun came totally burnt on the bottom and I mean black! It was sent back but this shouldnt happen especially when your are paying over $30 for a burger and fries.And to add to this a auto 20 % tip! Let me decide what a tip should be.Also my granddaughters burger bun was burnt also and sent back.

I was there today and I ordered a tent burger with french fries and gravy and a side order of fries and gravy it was almost $50 + 5 for tip there was no gravy on the french fries way too expensive

Did not expect to find this place on our way home from camping but blew me away. Chief is very talented. Food is creative and unique, expertly prepared and delicious. Foodies should go here. You will be super happy that you did. Worth the drive!! Food

As previous reviews have said, do not let the unassuming exterior alter your decision to enter. The service was quick, efficient and very personable. The food was so delicious and very filling, unable to try dessert. Will be back! Dietary restrictions: Advised server of a food allergy and we were reassured there would be no cross contamination and all precautions would be observed with our meals.

A hidden gem! You feel pampered from the moment you step in the door. The chef is an absolute artist and the service is Top-notch. Dietary restrictions: The waitress asked right up front if we have any dietary needs. You feel really taken care of in this restaurant.

My family and friends have come here for breakfast and dinner many times. Every bite of every dish is delicious and flavourful. You can feel the thoughtfulness and love in the food. I highly recommend trying everything on the menu!

The bet food Ive had in years and Im a foodie! We ordered the quail house special with a apricot glaze, stuffed with sausage and served over corn risotto with a puttanesca salsa/chutney drizzled in the Chefs special delicate herb oils. A combination of spices that is truly masterful!! The Californian Chardonnay is a wonderful accompaniment

We had an amazing breakfast with my family everything was good. My wife ordered a side home fries and was completely shocked when the bill came $13 for the side order! Wow a bit much for potatoes. I could have ordered a whole farmers breakfast for the same price wasnt too impressed

A friend recommended this little place, if you are not careful you can miss is as it is on the side of the road on 169. Today we went for lunch and we both had the specials. The duck confit open face sandwich, the whole quail as well as the tent salad were exceptional! Almost forgot with no space we shared a cream brûlée as well , delicious! Every one walking out after their lunch was literally complimenting the chef laud and clear! It is a must visit @muskoka @muskokalakes and all of you visiting from Toronto. Reservation is a must so you are not in for a surprise!

The food and service were fantastic - great experience. Each plate we had was absolutely perfect. Not one complaint - so delicious and well served They ve made attempts at making the place look much better. Lots of room for improvement however. Little cost to do some landscaping - plant some flowers. A little time to add some love around the place. A greeter/hostess/manager would be really lovely .. explain the menu, the chef, the love he puts in his food. We will be back FOR SURE.

Good food

Im very happy to have found this restaurant which was recommended by a friend. Tent is family owned and the family that owns and operates it make wonderful hosts. I really enjoyed both dinner and brunch here and look forward to many more. The duck main was delicious. Tents chef makes his own home-made hot sauce which is out of this world amazing and they also offer great house made pickles. The bartender and servers team are welcoming and friendly.

One of the VERY BEST breakfasts Ive ever had in a restaurant. It was that good. Service was great, but dont be in a rush. Only con and its a small one is the place looks deserted when you drive in. I thought it was an abandoned building at first. Food makes up for it!!! We will most certainly be back.

Friends who live in the area have been recommending Tent for years and now I know why! Our first treat was the chefs amuse bouche; a freshly made donut hole with dulce sauce. In our party of five most of us chose the farmer s breakfast. Although simple, the taste, preparation and presentation were fantastic. Crispy home fries were just that and super tasty. The in house made focaccia bread was a delight for dipping in the perfectly cooked eggs. One of us had the delicious open faced omelette with salad and house made dressing. All of the service we had was prompt and friendly. Thanks to everyone for a memorable meal. I will most certainly be back to try the lunch and dinner delicacies.

Outstanding food, exceptional experience.

Totally unexpected to walk in and find such a beautiful dining area, fabulous food artfully prepared and presented by the wonderful chef and staff. I will be coming back with an empty stomach in advance of taking in a full-on diner and desert menu indulgence.

Really excellent spot for a delicious meal. Breakfast, lunch or dinner you cant go wrong. Its a bit out of the way but totally worth the drive. (Only thing that could be better is their coffee).

My husband and I had a wonderful lunch experience at Tent Kitchen yesterday! It was our first time there. I have many dietary restrictions, and our server, Katlyn, went above and beyond to ensure my meal was appropriate. She was very professional, knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. The food was fresh, very tasty, filling, and definitely photo-worthy! We will be going out of our way to eat there again soon.

We had a very lovely and charming server at lunch yesterday, and the Chef not only prepared a wonderful lunch but personally came out to check how the food was. The ambiance of the interior needs some tweaking, in my opinion, but this is a true hidden gem that needs to be talked about.

Had a brunch here after watching the aurora. Super friendly staff, got an appetizer on the house for our first visit. Had the steak and eggs and lemon ricotta pancakes, delicious and great portion. Highly recommend anyone who comes to the area. Food

You NEED to eat here! This place serves the best food I ve had in a VERY long time. Everything we ate was so delicious that my husband and I were literally speechless. We had the hummus and Brussels sprouts to start, such incredible flavour combos. Then I had the burger and my husband had the shrimp crab spaghetti. I didn t think a burger could be that good!!! I will be dreaming about it tonight. Can t wait to come back and try the brunch!! Top notch food, great portions and for a fair price. Ate it so quickly that we forgot to take photos of everything lol Service was also amazing, Dave the chef came out to introduce himself and it was so nice to hear his story. Waitress was kind and attentive. I would never have expected to find a restaurant this good out here in the middle of nowhere, but this place is 12/10. You will not regret the drive! So worth it.

An absolute hidden gem. From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted and made to feel welcome. The service was outstanding. The restaurant is small and quaint with a nice selection of music playing. We enjoyed the brussel sprouts and omg were they ever delicious! We also had 2 pasta dishes and crème brûlée for desert. Can t recall the last time we oohhhhhed and ahhhhhd at a meal, it was truly delicious. Give it a try, you will love it. We will be back for sure!

Unfortunately two things happened within minutes. They bring you a bottle to pore extra water. In the neck of the bottle was some sort of chunk of something.... second, we ordered breakfast, my sons eggs had a hair in it. They took the plate, scraped the eggs off and made new ones. Having two things like that, I kinda thought they would do something more. The server was pleasant. The inside was nice.

I love that the menu is always being tweaked based on feedback and whats in season. A must stop for anyone driving on 169, at the casino or in Orillia. By far the best hospitality Ive seen in the area. Kudos to the staff

Stopped at what appeared to be a converted gas station for a quick lunch . From the Google menu I thought I would get a fish and chips but decided to go with a salmon eggs benny and when it arrived I was blown away. It tasted amazing. A cheery environment. The young lady who attended to me was very attentive and pleasant. This is a hidden gem that you should give a try and don t be fooled by its modest exterior.

We are so lucky to have this restaurant so close by, but I do almost feel like the chef and food is wasted here, he is so talented. Really amazing vegan options, one of the best meals I ve ever had. Absolutely love this place. My go to spot when in the Orilla area. Wish you would open one in Durham Region. Been there twice and even better second time around. Food quality is excellent and service fantastic. Im thinking about those poached pears right now. This chef understands food. Dont change a thing.

What a cute little place. Went for breakfast and ordered the breakfast burger and chicken club. Good wize portions. They have these sweet bread knots that I had to buy and bring home. Overall, I would definitely be going back.

Tent. One of our favourite places to enjoy amazing, consistent and delicious food. The family owned business sets itself apart by creating some of the most flavourful and beautiful dishes. You are not ready for how good this food is. If you live in the area, you must go; if youre just going up the 169, you must stop in. Worth making a special trip to Orillia for. Thats how good it is. Unassuming from the road, but looks are deceiving. Had dinner and went right back for brunch the next morning and look forward to the next time.

What can I say about this place. It s nothing short of incredible. Chef Dave is a true magician. Everything we ve ever eaten here has been top Shelf. Deepa and the staff serve with a smile and make you feel like you are home. It s in an old gas station but don t let that fool you. This is like field of dreams. They built it and we will come ..often. Do yourself a favour and eat here!!!

1st visit was for Sunday brunch for 3 people, arriving around 11am. Tables full (perhaps seating for 40) but no line. Delicious food, presented well. Unfortunately, with only 1 server (very pleasant), our food was served 30 - 40 minutes after ordering.

The food here has been fantastic since theyve opened. Myself or anyone I know that has eaten here has nothing negative to say. The owners are great people, always polite! The passion for cooking is obvious, the meals speak for themselves on that. Five Star in cleanliness, atmosphere and of course the food quality.

What a hidden gem! This is a top notch restaurant - the food is incredible and comparable to any high end restaurant anywhere. I was blown away. Not big on the decor here - however the food bar none is simply delicious. Can t wait to come back!

I ve been to a lot of top cuisines, and I mean a lot. But this? THIS IS PERFECTION. I savour every bite with all my heart. The drinks, the food, the dessert, the service, top tier. *chefs kiss* I would fly across the country just to have another bite. Every visit is a new experience and I fall in love with it all over again. MUST TRY!

The food and the service were excellent. I had a garlic shrimp appetizer that was the best garlic shrimp I have ever eaten. Then a beet salad which was just ok. My husband had steak with pepper sauce and fingerling potatoes that was amazing. A lemon tart that was sublime finished the meal. Don t pay any attention to its appearance from the outside. Clearly the money is being spent on quality ingredients.

Like many other reviews, don t let the outside fool you. What a gem of a restaurant. Little family run restaurant with amazing charm and even better food. Not the kind of food you would expect in cottage country. Prices are fair considering they make everything except the ketchup in house. The waitstaff is lovely, the owners are kind. We even got take out for later! Give this place a try!

I m sorry to say I was very disappointed with my lunch. I can t tolerate red meat so I went on your website and read the menu, I specifically went on a Friday for fish and chips, you don t serve fish and chips so I asked for the crispy chicken sandwich, you weren t serving that. I wasn t allowed to have anything from the weekend items and I don t like salmon. The chef would not make me a chicken breast sandwich so I ended up ordering something I didn t want or like because I had brought people with me. We spent a lot of money and it just was not a good experience. Vegetarian options: Not nearly enough, they are all mostly on the weekend

What a delight. Second time attending Tent and we re just in as much awe as the last time attending. The building outside is sketchy beyond belief, but the building indoors is perfect. This is an experience that you ll want to experience for the first time, again and again, with family and friends as well. And no, they didn t pay me to say this.

Great restaurant. A little hidden gem beside the hwy in Washago. Food is delicious it shows that the chef takes pride of his meals. His staff will go above and beyond to make sure you enjoy the experience. Their spicy margaritas are the best!! To criticize prices and not give a review about the food is so unfair for small businesses owners in this economy. Everyone is trying to make it. If you want to try a GREAT restaurant, give them a chance you won t be disappointed.

Dining at Tent is a unique and special experience. In the Orillia area, the food is in a league of it s own. I ve eaten here three times, always for brunch. It s not an overstatement to say that each time the meal has been damn near close to perfect. The store itself is seriously deceptive, the restaurant looks like it was formerly a gas station and it s in the country on a random stretch of road. It almost feels intentional afterwards, like they wanted to throw you off before blowing you away. It always starts with the bread knots, like a complimentary basket of bread, expect these are donut-like, and some of the best pastries I ve ever had. Who puts this level of care into a starter that is usually an afterthought? But this is what Tent does, every single ingredient in every dish is prepared with meticulous care. They are clearly pouring in everything they have back in the kitchen. The burger I had today was among the 2 or 3 best I ve had in my life (the bacon jam put it over the top). By far, this is the best restaurant north of Toronto I ve been to. It doesn t seem to make sense that it exists but I am thankful it does.

I have eaten at quite a few fancy restaurants and I have to say this is the best food so far!

Amazing surprise! Go to the abandoned gas station for a foodie level meal? Yep! The small intimate dining room, welcoming and efficient staff and the food make for a great evening. It is a chef owned restaurant with food that rises to the level big city standards. If in the area it is a not to be missed place to go and if you live in the area you ll be a regular!

We stopped at Tent on our way back up north, for breakfast. What an absolutely delightful surprise at how great this was. Our server was friendly and attentive. My husband had the special which was a potato waffle topped with braised short ribs, mushrooms, onions and topped off with an egg. It was delicious. I had the regular breakfast which was also so good. I asked for crispy bacon and actually got crispy bacon. Most places never cook it enough for me. An overall wonderful breakfast. Can t wait to try their dinner menu. Definitely a hidden little gem.

Stopped in for takeout and was amazed by the menu offerings. The chef is very creative and current with his flavors and choice ingredients. Best fish and chips that we have ever had. We will be back, a great find on 169....thank you for a great meal.

Feb 2022 new update all new decor this place looks fantastic. The food was absolutely spot on from the apps thru dessert. The staff are great and chef Dave and his wife are great hosts .. Wow, who knew that a little, mom-and-pop restaurant in the middle of nowhere would have served up one of the best meals Ive had in a while? Some friends and I were looking for a brunch spot on the way back to the city and stumbled upon Tent Kitchen + Bar and their high reviews. I tried the lemon ricotta pancakes which were delicious and made with love. The chicken and waffles were even better, with great textures and flavours. This is a new must-stop any time Im passing by Rama!

Three times in a row. Ordered well before. Never on time. Always late so frustrating. Good food. But terrible customer service. Every single time. At least 15 minutes late. Its as if they wait until I am here to cook it. What the heck is the point of ordering ahead. Way too pricey for this community. Last time for me. I do not want to wait another 35 minutes when I am there. You told my wife 2 minutes. She wasnt fine with it. What was she suppose to say though no? Come on! Terrible reply. I called at 515 pm for a 645 pickup. The lady on the phone said we cant do it until 630..so I was even kind enough to say I will come at 645. This was not the first time. Every single time I pre order you wait until I am there. What is the point of that????. I mine as well just show up. But dont worry. I wont again. Especially after your false and rude reply. Dont make it look like you were not even close to being in the wrong. I wrote this because it is a multiple occurrence. If it is not late you forget something in our order. If someone says they will pick up at a certain time then you should honor that. If the customer is late and their food is soggy that is their fault. Thanks for Making the matter worse.

To say the Tent Kitchen and Bar is hidden gem is an understatement. We had been recommended by several groups of friends and finally bit the bullet and went. Well, 100% we will be returning again and again. The food was beyond good and the portions second to none. The service was impeccable. As soon as we walked in we felt welcome and part of their dining family. The outside of the building is very deceiving as it was an old gas station so the old saying you never judge a book by its cover applies to The Tent. And fyi....if its still on the menu(they change it every 3 to 4 months ), try the brussel sprouts!!

We tried Tent this evening because two friends said we needed to try this place. They said the food was excellent. They weren t wrong! My wife and I had a great time, and the food was outstanding. The most unexpected epicurean delight from the outside but the newly refurbished inside takes you away on an eating frenzy! Service was fabulous and friendly. Absolutely adored our server! Must haves . Pickles and onions, most definitely the butternut squash, if the chicken and potato curry is on the menu you have to have it! Pizza is delicious. Wine selection is decent and fits with the menu choices. Definitely will be back!

This location has suffered thru some very incompetent owners. Well that is over, the new owners of the Tent are experienced and professional! The menu is varied. I went with 8 people, so we pretty much sampled everything. No one was disappointed. Congratulations to the new owners! They have accomplished what others have failed. Offer great food and service and people will come....in droves!

Had brunch with friends at Tent Kitchen + Bar. The eggs Benedict were perfection! The salad was phenomenal! The service was professional and friendly. Overall, an excellent experience. Will definitely be making this our go-to place to eat.

Went to Tent by myself for the first time two weeks ago and was so greatly pleased! Amanda was my server and couldn t have been better - friendly, attentive, but didn t hover even though I sat at the bar! I started with the Oxtail Croquettes and it was one of the best plates of food I ve had in recent memory - possibly ever. Best chimichurri I ve ever had (and I ve had quite a lot in my time lol). Went with the burger and fries for the main course, best burger in the area. Patty was the perfect size and cooked perfectly, the bacon jam was amazing, and the fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The chef and his wife both came and checked how my meal was and were exceptionally friendly. I have been recommending them to everyone I know and will be back!!! I didn t take any pictures because it was all presented so beautifully and smelled so good I started eating everything the moment it was dropped off!

We had the salad, steak, hamburger and gnocchi. It was a wonderful meal and definitely will go back!!

Dont let the outside fool will when you come inside its very appealing place. All the stuff is friendly. Even the chef came out to greet us. The menu is simple and easy to read the most difficult part is actually choosing what you want. All I can say is if you drive by this place bad on your part then. Great menu, done well with fresh ingredients, and excellent presentation on the plates. The flavors are interesting, different, but delicious. Its evident the chef has put alot of thought into his menu and has considerable experience in a kitchen. The Tent kitchen was worth the drive from Orilli to check out a new menu, support a local restaurant that isnt a junk franchise without any soul. The staff were attentive and casual, and made for a nice experience. My only feedback is to change the lights. White spectrum office lighting should stay in the office. Get some romantic lights, and candles everywhere. Lights and music will add so much to what youve already delivered...a fantastic menu. Ps. Is the chef Sri Lankan? When is there going to be menu options for that?!? I am down to come for a SR food night!! Good Luck

Ive been here multiple times now and every experience is just as fantastic as the last. The meals are absolutely phenomenal, you can really tell the chef cares about the food being served. Great food but limited menu and very very pricy

We had wanted to try Tent for a long time. Many of our friends recommend this restaurant. The appetizers were amazing! We had the jalapeno poppers, and the Brussel sprouts, along with a nice bottle of red wine. The main course was not nearly as good. We ordered the tent pizza and the cappelletti. We received the wrong pizza initially which we tried a bit or two before realizing we ordered one with meat. It wasnt good pizza. But once we got the right pizza it wasnt very good either. The pizza was thin and soggy, the sauce was bland, just tomato with no Italian spices. The pizza had little to no flavor. The Cappelletti was better but still not very good for the price we paid for the meal. The pasta may be better served in a bowl to contain the broth better and with light parm on top. Overall we were disappointed with the main courses we chose and made a pizza when we got home cause we were still hungry. Cost of the meal was high based on the quality of food. I know this restaurant has better food than what we had. The burger at the other table looked amazing. We will go back again to try something else.

Wow. Just WOW! Heard some raving reviews about this restaurant and decided to make a reservation for my moms birthday. We were absolutely blown away. Before we arrived, the staff had decorated our table with some colourful balloons to help us celebrate. The quality of the food is absolutely phenomenal and the staff are wonderful. The lamb shank special and brussel sprout appetizers were delicious. To top it off, the orange cake dessert sent us into a heavenly daze. Delighted to have this gem of a restaurant by us. Its easy to miss if youre speeding down the 169, but if youre looking for a special meal, be sure to make a stop. You wont regret it.

My husband and I visited Tent for a date night last night. The food was so delicious and our waitress was very friendly and personable. We shared the Brussels sprouts, fritto misto, steak, and chocolate lava cake. We loved them all. The only thing we noticed was that the bathrooms were extremely hot since it wasnt in the air conditioned portion of the restaurant. Otherwise, despite the outside appearance, the food and people inside are top notch! Id definitely return for more.

Had a great time at Tent. The food was really terrific and the service was top-notch. Be prepared for a little sticker-shock though. Great food and service should command top dollar, but pricing is a little excessive for the locale. Had the garlic shrimp, which were really good but not a lot of shrimp for $22 and a steak which was perfectly prepared. Overall a great experience. Unfortunately it s a once a year place on my salary. We d come every week if it were priced a little more invitingly.

Stopped by this place on the side of the road this morning and were very pleasantly surprised! Clean and updated space and they use lovely pottery dishes but the food is the real star! We enjoyed the cabrese sandwich and breakfast burger- both with very generous amounts of fries!! Well done chef! We highly recommend this little place on the side of the road!

Have driven by this restaurant for over a year but it was always too late. Finally was able to enjoy this gem and the food was great. Had the burger with fries , Yum and their homemade hot sauce was perfect- just a little spicier than Frank s hot sauce. Definitely coming back to try the other menu items. Wine list is good as well.

Dave, Deepa & team catered our wedding at the start of September. Omg. Every single dish/item was amazing!! We had 4-5 different passed canapés (over open fire), and they were all amazing. Dinner service was salad (mixed greens, citrus, goats cheese & caramelized cookie crumbs)- one of their signature items! Please try this salad if you go to the restaurant ! Main course was beef tenderloin/garlic mash and roasted veggies (or vegetarian truffle gnocchi) amazing!! And dessert was a triple chocolate mousse cake. My fave!! We had guests get up mid entree to tell us how wonderful everything was. Many, many people said it was the BEST wedding meal they have ever had. Couldn t recommend Tent kitchen + Bar more for both event catering & in house dining. Make the drive & enjoy the amazing food & welcoming service. Thank you chef !

This is a real gem of a restaurant. We had the prime rib sandwich and chicken wings which were both generous and delicious. Fresh cut fries done to perfection accompanied each dish and service was impeccable. Dave, the owner, obviously takes pride in his establishment and was engaging and committed to good food. Well done Dave! My wife and I have found our new meal destination on our way to cottage country, well be back often! Back for lunch, another memorable meal. Great service. Looking forward to coming back on the weekend and perhaps having the brunch!
