I’m sure they served me leftovers. Hot and sour soup tasted like it came right out of the fridge. It was super cold. I had to ask them to heat it up. Worse, the general tao chicken was hard as a rock. Not fresh at all. I couldn’t even get my fork through it. I took one bite of the broccoli and it was cold too. I’m not a picky eater but this meal was horrible. I had to go across the street and buy some samosas at the grocery store to eat some decent food. First time I ever wrote a review like this. I felt obligated to warn the neighbourhood.
Cheap but great food around the downtown area! For $14.75 you get to eat a whole plate, #worth
Quite a loyal customer to this establishment. Good portions with the meals and spice level can be adjusted. Quite pleased with a wonton noodle soup order as their container keeps the noodle separate just above the bowl so it does not get too soggy. Great value for the money.
Good beef rice noodles. (#79)Lots of bean sprouts and obviously not as good as the popular Cantonese restaurants in Chinatown or on Merivale but still has that wok hei. The noodles could have been chewier. The meat was tender and there was good amount of beef. Not too greasy either. #18 beef brisket noodle soup was a large portion but mostly tendon than brisket. Soup was tasty but probably wouldn’t recommend. The Hong Kong lemon tea is tart and sweet but not too sweet. Just right and a good size. The women’s bathroom is spacious and nice. Has a changing table. The grocery store has frozen food and snacks.
An Asian approving Asian food is as good as the compliments it gets. Sweet Sour Chicken, Beef with onion and scallion and tofu with egg plant were all winners. Service was fast and staffs were friendly!
Food is delicious! Great portions. I keep coming back for more. I highly recommend the Stir Fried Beef Rice Noodles (乾炒牛河), 41A Chili Chicken, and Braised Eggplant & Tofu. Interior has some seating space for dine in. They also sell some unique Asian snacks & grocery items. Take out is good too.
Went here for lunch today. I craved Cantonese food for a while so I gave this place a try. I ordered the Hainanese chicken rice and the stir fried beef rice noodle. Can't say It's 100% authentic Cantonese/Hongkong cuisine ( most "chinese" restaurants in Ottawa are not really authentic anyway....) but it's not bad overall. Not enough "Wok-hey" for the stir fried beef rice noodle. I also wonder if they put some MSG into the dishes too since my mouth felt dry after finishing the dish.. That being said, I'd still give them a 4/5 because the portion is really huge for the price you paid! Simply cannot complain too much.. Update: second time visiting here and I like it even more after trying all the "Cantonese /HK food" in the Ottawa china town... They have the best HK style Milk tea in Ottawa imo. Way better than Cafe Orient's flavourless milk tea. The beef brisket fried rice meal I ordered is also yummy and portion is huge as usual. And it's only for 12.25! B I raised the rating from 4 to 5. Doesn't necessarily mean it's great but it may be the best HK style food in Ottawa I tried so far. Update: they raised prices again and I find their food even more oily now ... Really not healthy! Lowered rating to 4/5.
Such a hidden gem, I can’t believe it took me this long to go here! Their $10 combo is such a good deal. You have the option between white rice, fried rice or noodles, and then broccoli or braised tofu eggplant. Then you have a bunch of protein dishes to choose from. Very huge portions. Staff was friendly and there are plenty of seating.
Friendly people, great food, great prices. Great food, people and prices.
Some of my favourite takeout in Ottawa.
sells expired products
Dont come they sell food past expiration the date!!!!
would give zero. food was long expired.
awful experience.. ate expired products and fell ill.
Food was terrible, dry bland and overpriced. Everything tasted like sand paper. They didnt even give us plates like how are we supposed to eat? On the floor?
Great Chinese food here , reminds me of when I lived in the Yukon . The food is great , dont have to worry about not having enough food here . I do recommend people to eat here
Very good!
amazing food wonderful place and friendly staff!
Food is decent Ottawa quality asian food but not comparable to places like Toronto/Vancouver (would be a 6/10 in comparison). I typically order the same dish and find that there are slight consistency issues with their food quality. Sometimes, the rice is dry and old, sauce is extra salty, small meat portion size, etc. Some of these issues are non-trivial/deal breakers imo like dry old rice. Negligible cost to provide fresh rice but profound experience difference. Quick service though
Sold me expired yakult. It was my fault too for not checking but I was rushing because my uber was waiting.
Would give 0 stars if I could. Ive just spent over 100$ for burnt food with no sauces. My general tsao chicken was crunchy, burnt and dry, my chicken balls were burnt with no sauce, and my chow mein wasnt cooked.
I was shocked tonight to order food...it taste like left over from fridge...chicken dry & taste like fish...I ate inside restaurant before...the food was great & fresh & amazing ...but today my daughter order it for me...its repulsive...I shocked...never expected something so bad.. If I had a car I would return this mess
Their food is really good and worth the price. The stir fried beef rice noodles are very good. I always get it whenever I come here. I highly recommend it. I also got the curry chicken combo which was pretty good.
The white-cut chicken is delicious
Got the general tao combo 1. Felt the chicken was very dry and so was the fried rice. Very little sauce too.
Great value. Tasty and generous portions. The combos are great. BBQ Chicken, Fried Rice, Yeung Chow are my top 3.
Excellent fried rice 10 out of 10, food is good, General Tao could use more sauce but this is above average chinese chef.
Delicious food, very good welcoming vibe. It also has a convenient store section on the side. I can see how it can be very nice and convenient place for the local community including the nearby students.
Tasty Asian dishes at very reasonable prices. Large family size portions perfect for sharing. A variety of meat, veg, seafood and rice and noodle dishes to choose from. Certainly worth the trip to downtown Ottawa.
Tried this place twice 1st time I got the beef chow mein and it was ok Id give it 3 stars but tonight I tried the chicken chow mein and JUST SALT! It tasted like someone spilt the salt container and mixed it in to hide their mistake almost 20$ down the drain
Good people and great food
Great food good prices
Food is bland but passable. Supermarket is overpriced. Staff is a mixed bag, some are decent, one of them not so much (woman who looks like Zhu Bajie)
Downtown Ottawa. Curry is great. The wonton soup is very average. Overall, not bad.
Very good restaurant with excellent value for money. Its a fast food place, lacking a bit of atmosphere.
What a fucking idiot... The attitude of the old woman at the counter is as if shes been shot. Shes a bunch of rubbish. Shes one of the rubbish restaurants in Ottawa. She collects the bill and just yells at them. 6. I hope this store closes down soon! Rubbish
Excellent authentic Cantonese food. Reasonably priced. Stir fried beef rice noodle Was tasty and good portion size.
It s not the best food but it s also not the worst honestly. I been 2 times and both times it s been pretty good. What can you really expect for Chinese place on rideau
I would say it is good for having a quick lunch or dinner. Combos are good options. They are something you can get in a normal restaurant in HK or other cities in China. You can also shop a variety of snacks and many other food products from China, Korean and Japan.
Food quality is good, very convenience location.
generous portions and descent price love the mapo tofu
I had the cumin lamb. Its a bit pricey, but the portion was generous and the good was excellent. Parking: If youre willing to walk a bit there is street parking nearby. Its free evenings and Sunday. Not sure about Saturday. There are paid lots nearby too.
I didnt try the restaurant, but I tried the market. I love that you can find everything.
I like this restaurant. I have dined in and ordered ubereats. Today, I was left quite disappointed by my order. The wonton noodle soup did not contain any wonton. The pan fried dumplings were greasy. Maybe they changed staff bc it was not like this before.
Very bad service, the sales staff would not provide extra utensil after spending over hundreds of dollars they refused to provide any chopstick or napkins very disappointed very selfish behaviour
Horrible service Carandis silly bad food please stay away from this place
Tried the general tao combo with fried rice and the hainanese chicken combo. Also got a strawberry bubble tea slush with tapioca. Food was mediocre, but wed not go back unfortunately. Everything very oily and tastes old.
Ordered egg rolls and spring rolls through delivery. Didnt get any plum sauce whatsoever, even though I explicitly asked for it, in several different notes sections in the Uber eats app Oh, and the fried rice had a large egg shell in it?? Definitely wont order again
Food is not fresh. Lack of flavours. I do not recommend and will not go back.
Excellent Service and Food anytime I m in Ottawa
Run of the mill Chinese restaurant. Will tickle that itch for Asian food
Service is awful and the place doesn t seem to be clean enough.
My mom and I came in to order 2 lunch time rice dishes and ordered a drink and tapioca dessert and the whole experience is terrible. Customer service was unwelcoming and very unhappy responses. The tapioca dessert said with coconut milk and when it came it tasted pure evaporated milk and no coconut milk in it as it is just yellow in color. I asked the waitress she said thats how I make it. Thankfully I didnt have any dairy allergy. Another server then came to ask if we needed to order half hour later. Me and my mom worried if our order was even rung in so I had asked and she said yes. Waited 45mins and 2 customers came in ordered beside us. We had no idea but they got their food so we asked how come they got their food. The server said because we ordered a slush and dessert(separate from the kitchen) it takes longer. How does that make any sense. So you are staying if the drink and dessert(usually come after meal) that we wouldnt get our food? Do not recommend here period. Terrible terrible experience.
For lovers of Asian products, this is the place in Ottawa! The cashier was super pleasant and smiling. We robbed the drinks and soups. We will come back this way when we return to the capital.
Had the sesame crispy beef. It was very dry and hard to chew . I did order soon before closing time thru Uber but opening hours should be respected . Especially when the cost is the same no matter the time or freshness . I won t go back unless they offer to redeem .
Great food, but also a great market for ingredients you cant find in grocery stores.
Pretty decent restaurant especially for the price. The shop is also pretty cool but nothing crazy.
I ve ordered from here many times and this will be my last order. My main issue is that the sweet and sour chicken balls are virtually inedible. I m pretty sure they were leftover and deep fried a second time. This has happened SEVERAL times. Also, the chow mein is extremely oily. Like gross soybean oil running off when you eat it. The fried rice is good as well as sweet and sour chicken (peppers, onions, etc.).
Wait is very long but the portions are large and the food is delicious.
Always amazing!! A favourite for years!!
I have to say that this is not the fanciest place Ive ever been too, but the food is really good. The specials are great value for money. Im surprised to see such a concept, a grocery store and a eat in restaurant at the same time. Nicely done. They have selections in their grocery store that I have a hard time finding in Toronto.
Food was absolutely amazing, but it is just a pass a a restaurant, its more of a grocecy store with a tiny eating area.
The boss and the girl at the front desk are very polite. The dry-fried beef river is delicious and has a hot pot flavor. The salt and pepper shrimp are also delicious, but they are not too full and I didnt finish them.
Good price and portions. Enjoyed the food.
For a change, our movers love to eat here. Thanks to the chefs!
The food was not good at all. Rice was stale and sticky. Just overall do not recommend this place
The taste is authentic and I bought a lot of Asian childhood memory foods!
The food was fresh and delicious; it was the best Singapore noodles I have EVER had. They also have a great selection. But unfortunately half of our order was missing. A huge misstep since we spent over $100. I should note that I have been to their grocery store before and I enjoyed it. It s worth checking out.
Long wait time .
I bought the mango bubble tea there. The taste was not too good. Before trying it however, the cup spilled on me. The straw material they gave it with was bad thus when I tried making a whole in the lid it broke and half of it spilled on my brand new coat. I went back and they game me a new one. A warning would have been nice about the straw situation.
This food always makes me happy its so delicious! General Tao is one of the best I ever had. They also have a cool snack/ gtocery section that carries cool stuff like seaweed Lays etc.
I found I really like the food here I tried the yesterday, had some really awesome flavours. I found the amount for the price is good too. The lady behind the counter wasn t very friendly at all and my chicken was pretty overdone. I would still return though, especially to buy from the market.
Very fresh and tasted great. Wish we lived closer to get this more often!
Deep Fried stuff like egg rolls and spring rolls or general tso was over fried and almost burnt. Other dishes like Cantonese chow mein and fried rice were good.
Out of all the Chinese food I have eaten, Hong Kong Express is by far the best in the city. I got it delivered to my house, still hot and freshly made! I highly recommend it .
Delicious, authentic Chinese food. Beef brisket noodle soup, Shanghai bok choy stir fried with garlic.
Food here in Hong Kong Express is alright, not the service. I opted in for dining-in and was informed at the cash-counter this: If you would like to dine-in, you would have to give a tip between 10-15%. I understand that this sort of restaurants may pay minimum wage and in some cases below minimum wage (which is illegal). From my understanding, tipping is customary and should completely depend on the customers will. A restaurant can not compel a customer to give them tips. What they did is illegal and shameful practice.
Im giving this 4 stars because I order here a lot and normally Im very happy with my food. However today I ordered the general tao chicken and was very disappointed. The chicken was fried but there was no sauce on it at all. I had to go make my own sauce since it just tasted like chicken and oil. Disappointed because I ordered it through a delivery app so it was extra pricey today, but I was confident that it would at least be a meal I enjoyed. I do still think everyone should give this place a chance though, most of the time Im very happy with my meals.
Hidden gem in Ottawa. Tried their food for the first time today. Both my wife and I enjoyed the chilli chicken and black pepper beef. Highly recommend A+++++
Great food love it
Wasnt clean under the tables, floor, table sticky... Food was fresh, meat was tasty and it was an ok taste for what I ordered. I also orders some fried chicken and I didnt know it didnt come with a sauce...I wish she would have tried to give some info, since I told her its my first time ordering. Any way...Not impressed.
Every rude, there food was over/under cooked. First time going there and the very last time going there. Their food tastes like it comes from a microwave. Took them 5 minutes to put out our food but took 15min for them to give us 2 cokes. No gloves no hair nets place is gross!
Nice food, quick service
I recommend trying the fried rice. Very good. Ask for medium spice when ordering it.
The food was delicious and service was great ! We did wait for a bit for the soup, but the beef broccoli was nearly there as soon as we sat at the table. Totally worth it !
HK style stir fry restaurant with dine in and take out options. Dine in only seats only about 20 people. They also have a small market for Asian dry goods. Good value, combos available. Good service as they juggle between take out and dine in. Food wise its not super truly authentic HK (Im from HK) but its not bad. You do get some dishes catering to western friends. But if youre looking for real wok-hei stir-fry, not quite here. But good valued meal.
There are many varieties of snacks and the service is very considerate.
Good food at decent price!
Very good and authentic Cantonese food, recommend.
The Chinese food is scrumptious. Highly recommend ordering the general tao. Its one of the best Ive ever had in the city!! Not only is the food high-quality. Theres also a little confidence store inside full of imported snacks, juice & pop thats so yummy! Staff are really nice too!
High quality food for the price. Pad thai and chow mein were really good
Vegetarian options: Quick, easy and convenient. Many oriental products are imported. Lots of sweets and munchies. Meals to consume within or take out.
Very disappointed, poor service
Delicious, must try if you have the chance to go to Ottawa
Very dirty in kitchen and huge ripoffs! I have no clue on earth how this women thinks she deserves tips when she charges 5 dolla for chitty eggwoll
Not authentic, even then, the food is not good, e.g. general tao combo was a mess... They even got the order wrong...
Large portion and it is actual Hongkong flavored
So delicious and great service!
Great noodles
I dont care for the food thats almost below average. I continue to visit the store for the snacks that are mostly Expired Items (Expired date: August/September 2021). Ive raised their attention to the issue and all Ive gotten is to be monitored and suspicious looks from the manager. They took my phone number but never heard from them. Expired items! Who knows what theyre doing to the food?! Beware!!
It is a takeout counter? Is it a small grocery store? Is it a restaurant? Yes, and all three of those overlap in a very chaotic and rather messy setting. Egg rolls, hot and sour soup and chicken pad Thai were all very delicious and tasted 5 star for Asian fast food. Minus one star for handing me a hot and sour soup at the takeout counter, that was cold and spicy.
Got curry chicken and Cantonese chow mein was pretty good
The dishes cooked by the chef taste good. But the woman outside was very dirty. She touched her hands everywhere while doing other things, and then took the plates and bowls handed over by the chef. There was a big dirty fingerprint stuck to the edges of the plates and bowls. It was so disgusting. And the service was very poor. She thought I couldnt understand Cantonese and laughed at me and said we ordered too much. Was she complaining that we had increased her workload? Whats even more disgusting is that another woman was sweeping the floor while we were eating! The environment is very dirty.
Vegetarians beware: I ordered a dish from the Tofu and Vegetable section of the menu, called 67. Braised Eggplant and Tofu: Simmered tofu and eggplant. Despite no meat included in the description, it came with big, greasy chunks of pork. I tried to find contact info to let the restaurant know, but theres nothing on their website and they dont have any social media. Very disappointing and I wont order from them again.
The food is average , okay for the price. The grocery story is average , high for its price. The staff can be inconsiderate at times. When I picked up 2 things from the grocery store, they did not offer me a bag to carry the items just so they could save on bags. When I saved some food they gave me the smallest takeout bag and didn t even pack it themselves. Staff needs to work on this behaviour and stop being cheap. Customers pay good money for you not to scam them more.
Wheelchair accessibility: Its ground level
Did not like the food and drinks . But the people there are nice Food
Ive ordered delivery from them three times, and its been an excellent meal(s) each time. Dont sleep on the chilli chicken!
Great food great Price. Grocery a bit expensive but you Will find exclusive products.
Best spot for Chinese food in the downtown byward market area.
Good food. Servers are nice enough. They are not a fan of being asked when the food is done but they deal with a lot of complaints y I understand
Great food and quick service! A staple take out restaurant for our family.
Good dumplings!
Ive been to a lot of Chinese restaurants in Ottawa and so far this is the best one! Prices are great, food is awesome, and the portions are huge! If anyone is hungry for Chinese, this is definitely the spot to go to (the mango slushies are fire ).
Great variety of fresh hot food prices are very reasonable for what you get I always have leftovers comes in two sizes I usual get regular over small it feeds three people better to order in person cheaper alot these apps over charge you put the price up only complaint
Tasty low priced Chinese food.
One of THE best places for egg rolls in Ottawa! Best in ByWard Market for sure! Great service, easy to order over the phone and ready very quickly! Wonton soup with noodles was absolutely amazing as well! Definitely recommend and will go again
This is the one of the top 3 East Asian, or South-East restaurants that I eat at, or order from, in Ottawa. Their recipes are great, and so well priced, the Mapo Tofu I rhe best in the city in my opinion, their soups are good too, everything is well packaged for delivery/take out, and I think everyone should try it, whether youre visiting, or a resident here. Closest thing to a Ha-Ka restaurant we have in town
Tried Cumin Lamb through Uber Eats. Not impressed with the portion size or taste!
Ordered on Uber eats...delivered by bike in under 30 minutes on a Friday at 8pm (we live in Sandy Hill) General Tao chicken was amazing...so fresh and crispy!! Beef broccoli had tons of beef and super fresh broccoli. Overall a fantastic meal.
Great size portions and delicious food.
Pretty good food steps from home!
One of the best Chinese Ive had in a long time. Portions were really good too!
No rip-offs, great value for amazing food. Most menu items are below 10 dollars and service is extremely quick. If you are aiming for more proper, cantonese and chinese food, this is the place to go. More authentic and less about american-chinese dishes. As a Hong Konger, I truly recommend this place.
Absolutely delicious
Bland
The food is always feash and tasty. Nothing soggy, even the snow peas were perfect! I rarely ever post reviews but this place gets 5 stars from me
Had ordered General Tsao Chicken with noodles and vegetables. The second plate was sweet n sour chicken with noodles and vegetables. I had dropped in and ordered in the shop. Major renovation is ongoing. I waited about ten minutes for the food. I requested additional paper plates and napkins, which was gladly given. The quantity was quite good. But the chicken was hard and coated with flour. Very little meat. I tasted my wife s chicken. Exactly the same. Burnt noodles and beans sprouts. Only broccoli. No carrots or any other vegetables. No spring onions. No garnishing. Soggy noodles with water at the bottom. I am not returning back here. Enjoy your next visit at the place. :-(
Always follow instructions! Love their Chinese food the most in Ottawa.
For a (mostly) take-out, fast food, Americanized Chinese food place, its surprisingly good. I enjoyed it and would go back.
Best Chinese food in dt so good large volume, affordable, enthusiastic owner
Best chinese food
Great place for your typical Cantonese fare. Fast service and HUGE portions.
Large portions. Delicious food. Fair (for covid) prices.
We came on Christmas Day and I am grateful that this place was open. We ordered 4 things( fried rice with chicken, black pepper chicken, Tao chicken and pineapple fried rice) with lichi martini, honey with green tea cold and real lemon ice tea.. the food looked amazing and was even more delicious. I really recommend this place to everyone who wants to enjoy a variety of Asian food.
Food was subpar and cold when it arrived at our table. We also ordered some chicken wings which were undercooked. Service was very quick due to the fact that the kitchen cooks in bulk meaning the food can sit there for abit of time till someone orders hence being cold. I always walked past and wondered how good this place is but now I know.
Just had delivery from this place. Excellent food, generous portions, timely delivery. What more would you want? Shout out to Foodora as well. Terrific delivery service.
Cantonese cuisine is less oil and less salt But when I eat your food, I feel like I m eating too much oil. Dry-fried beef river is not oil-fried beef river... Mango sago. The sago felt very stale and had been there for a long time. The mangoes were made of something and were softer than marshmallows. I threw them all away. I haven t tried anything else so I won t comment.
Average lunch-feel dine in and takeout restaurant. We had the vege-fried rice for takeout and it was a hit with our sports team and parents. Good food.
Pretty decent, sort of feels like fast food. But the quantity is really good for the price and theres a lot of selection.
Delicious, average price, good place
They have a good price. And nice service.
Really good food for a great price!
Service is ok
Worst General Tao I ve ever had
Hard to get a place to park
Authentic HongKong taste
everything was delicious and well prepared
Great food, good prices. Calling in will save you about a buck or 2 per item vs ordering on Skip FYI.
I ordered the Yueng Chow Fried Rice, Sesame Crispy Beer, General Taos Chicken, Sweet and Sour chicken, Stir Fried Sliced Beef with Udon, Pan Fried Dumplings, and two egg rolls. Items arrived perfectly packed in reusable plastic containers. Orders always arrive in a tomely manner. I highly recommend if youre in the downtown core. Good value for food.
best food ever
Menu 10 cad very nice
Love their food and service is quick
Food tasted good, and there was a large portion considering the price. Seating was comfortable and service was expedient.
Great clean restaurant with kind staff and very good food at a decent price.
I have been to this place many time and it was good. But my this visit is horrible. One the server doesnt know a word of English, gave me half glass of water, food took over 35 minutes to come. Got half the order and the other half took another 15 minutes to come. Overall horrible.
The food here is delicious. It has a wide selection of food and lots of bubble tea. Spacious seating and friendly staff. The bathroom is big and clean and there is a changing table. Highly recommend.
Yum
Excellent food as usual. Wish they would still offer complimentary tea though.
Horrible. I ordered here because it was one of the few options available on Skip The Dishes late at night. I have nothing bad to say about their beef & broccoli, but the General Tao and Hot and Sour Soup were both terrible. Im from Montreal and have never had trouble finding decent Chinese food there. This place was terrible.
Generous portions, affordable prices, quick service, tasty food!
We have been coming to this place for weeks. Its a fantastic restaurant serving great food. The service is super friendly and always ready to imptove your experience. I especially recommend sauteed beef with Szechuan sauce!
Good place for quick bite to eat
