Bread & Sons in Ottawa

I had 4 pistachio almond croissants and they were extremely delicious. They were so good to the point I forgot to take a picture of them. (However, heres a pic of what I got last time with a cappuccino that I made) I also had some muffins, chocolate and blueberry almond croissants last time and they were yummy as well. Im happy that I found this hidden gem in Ottawa

This place continues to be a daily staple for fresh baked goods/treats and hot beverages. Like many businesses in the downtown core it does seem, however, based on my recent visit last month, that the quantity and variety of offerings have been drastically reduced (presumable to cater to the marked decrease in patrons/customers, that for obvious reasons). That being said this place will always remain (hopefully) a hidden gem in downtown Ottawa for the atmosphere and vibe you get as soon as you enter with the aroma of freshly baked chocolate hazelnut cookies and their thin crust artisanal pizza, despite the prices of their items having gone up. One could sit there for hours lost in their book collection and tasteful background music. Will keep coming back whenever visiting. Heres hoping that a gradual increase in customers to pre-pandemic levels can turn back the tide and have Bread and Sons increase their offerings yet again.

I ve tired the feta boreka, the babka, the sandwiches (all of them) and everything was on point! Coffee too!

Great pizza esp the crust and hot chilli sauce that comes with it on the side. It s like a tandoori crust. Had to say all the waiters were not friendly at all bin fact when we left I had to let them know. They are in the restaurant business and would expect some friendliness. We leave good tips but this was hard as I m not one to enable bad service or treatment. How else do people learn.

I have loved this place ever since I moved to Ottawa 10 years ago. I just wish they brought back their pre- pandemic hours. By opening at 8.30am you are missing out on a whole lot of people that gets downtown well before that time to beat traffic. I want nothing more than starting my day with your cappuccino and, if you still make them, those chocolate raspberry pastries I had way too much of those in 2020!! Too bad I start work at 8.30

I was on a trip to Ottawa downtown today and we found this hidden gem as a surprise. We ordered the Quiche feta parsley and Spinach Swirl. Both of them tasted delicious. We went to order again before we left Ottawa. I definitely recommend to visit this shop when you are nearby.

If there s a better sandwich in Ottawa I ve never tried it. Everything here melts in your mouth. Top quality ingredients, great selection. Even if you just want a coffee it s cheaper than the chains and has infinitely more character.

Im not sure why everyone raves about the muffins here, I ordered a ton for a work event (omg theyre expensive) and they were so dry and bland. They were made fresh due to the amount I needed but they sucked. I read so many good reviews about how everyone needs to try their muffins what a let down. Has noone ever made muffins before or gotten them from I dunno, dare I say Loblaws (their boxed muffins are better, no lie). Its too bad cause its a nice cozy little spot and who knows maybe the other food is good, but I can assure you the muffins are not.

I discovered Bread and Sons a couple months ago and it s now my go to lunch spot downtown! I adore the food (I can t go more than a week without the tempeh sandwich). You can tell they work hard on their recipes and use good quality ingredients. There s often a surprise pop of flavour to keep things interesting- like the hint of orange in the chocolate chip cookie! As for the vibe, B+S has that special feeling of being independently owned and run by people who truly care. And if you re like me you can sit and stare at the assortment of photos and art for a while without getting bored. Thanks for everything Bread and Sons great to have you in the neighborhood:)

After spending 10 years in the city, and buying from Bread & Sons for 8 years, I can confidently say they are the best spot for coffee, a treat, and or a sandwich in the whole of centretown. The quality of food at that price point is insane. On that point alone, you can stop reading and go grab something there. On a more personal note, thank you Bread & Sons for offering food that I grew up with. Youve put different spins on traditional items that have blown my mind. Listen, I dont even like chocolate babka. I am a cinnamon babka guy through and through.. but your chocolate babka was transcendental. I feel like I might be a better person now for having your babka? A very sincere todah rabah!

My favorite bakery but have a hard time accessing with not living downtown with only being open in the mornings and not accepting online pick up orders on the only day their open on the weekends. Also sad that they stopped carrying my fav walnut carrot muffins, just hope my other favorites dont start disappearing as well. We went here recently. All items were quite expensive for what they are, and the work thats put into them. There are other places in the area that offer similar, if not better items in the area, at a better price, such as golden baguette bakery, brown loaf bakery, and Tartelette Bakery & Cafe. As well, staff is not the most friendly, as well they dont seem very happy. Moreover, the atmosphere/environment is very dull and quiet dreary. This spot has become my favourite bakery in area, and is a great spot to visit to start a perfect Saturday morning! Excellent sandwiches (the Gouda one is my fav!), but my recommendation has got to be the spinach and feta spiral! The sesame seeds on top are the perfect addition to a classic combination. So yummy and flakey, ask for it to be warmed up too!

I had almond croissant and Americano, which were both good but nothing extraordinary. Place was untidy-all tables were full of bread crumbs left from previous guests, and nobody seemed to be cleaning tables. Everything is served in papercups and boxes.

The goat cheese sandwich was on a bread that when toasted was almost hard to bite through. And overpriced $10.49 for a sandwich? I expect it to have some protein in it at least. The coffee was not bad but not outstanding. The almond croissant with custard filling I found the outside layers to be way to hard. I would not come back here.

Breads and sons is a small place with big vibes to spread! I have always had amazing experiences each time I visit the place. The food is heartfelt! I have dropped by place early, right on time, even after that have just closed ( of course, they opened the door for me!) The quality and taste of the food as been outstanding nevertheless of the time of visit! Although everything over here tastes amazingggg! My top picks at Breads and sons - Panini, Perfect choco chip cookie( this stuff is gold here) , pizzas and croissants!

This place is amazing. They have the best pizza slices in the city. All vegetarian and all delicious. Some of the sandwiches are wayyyy too salty, but they are still very good. The almond croissant is excellent too.

Good stuff, quick service. Good place to stop for pizza, sandwiches, bread, and sweets. Service is quick. Be sure to find many government workers stopping by for lunch. There is nothing special about the sandwiches. The focaccia can be softer and more flavourful. Cookies are way to crunchy for my liking. I grabbed all the flavours, and I dont think I will buy them again. Tempeh sandwich was just okay. Pizza here is good. Helpful staff :)

A little whole in the wall, a true gem located on Bank Street that offers so much deliciousness. The sourdough and multigrain breads are delightful and the pizzas sold by the slice are delicious.

Ideal place for brunch. I loved everything I had from here . It s a cozy place to sit and talk. The pastries were good. I also loved the way the walls of cafe is decorated.

Signage was small and easy to miss so definitely keep an eye out this is not a place you want to walk by. Both croissants were excellent! The almond custard with blueberries was a unique and welcomed twist to a traditional almond croissant. The babka was soft buttery and had a strong chocolate flavor. There wasnt an option on display that we didnt want to try!

Bread and Sons is by far my favourite bakery in Ottawa. It has such a unique variety of sweet treats and savoury meals. The Gouda sandwich is my personal favourite along with any of their delicious croissants. I highly recommend!

Descent pastries. I think they are about the best in the downtown core. At the same time expecting a tip to hand me a croissant is a bit much. The almond croissant is nothing like I have had before it is full of custard and blueberries. Its not bad just not what you would expect.

Had no bread when I went there on a Monday morning. Very annoying to go out of my way and end up empty handed.

This place is amazing! Some work colleagues recommended this shop I was looking for some good coffee and a quick bite to eat, and it most certainly did not disappoint! Next time Im in Ottawa, I will do what I can to stop by again: simply delightful! PS: My boss is still dreaming about the pastries one week later. :-)

First of all, the bread is a tale as old as time. Classic! The taste brings me back to younger days when grandma would make bread. Emily was also extremely helpful. Even with several alarms (timers) ringing she was patience with all my orders. Simply wow, great buns! Update. Busy line and yet they still delivery (on time)!! The chefs hats are also a very nice touch!!

HIDDEN GEM. This spot has been a staple on Bank since 2005. And now I know why. Everything was delicious. From the sandwiches to the pizza to the amazing treats. My mouth is watering just thinking about all the goodness. This is a must try. Favorites from here was the pizza and the sandwiches.

cookie was great, probably one of the best ive ever had. the bread, which was labelled sourdough, is not sourdough, in my opinion. sourdough should have an open crumb, blistered crust and should have a tangy taste. the bread i got from here was made in a mould or in a tin, and the bread itself was dense and flavourless. disappointing for a $5 loaf. id come back for a pastry, but avoid the bread here; you can get much better loaves at other places in the city EDIT: im adding a star for the exceptional reply from the bakery. this is outstanding customer service; explaining their breadmaking process, but still respecting my opinion about their bread, and most importantly, standing behind their product and being proud of it. many establishments would brush you off. i have a huge amount of respect for them.

I work across the street from your bakery and I have to say that I am a HUGE fan. Your baked goods are always fresh and delicious. I particularly love the spinach and feta spiral with sesame on top...oh so good! The only feedback I would like to give you from a customer standpoint is that your store front really should stand out more. I had no idea that there was a bakery there if it was not for my co-workers raving about you. I had a hard time finding the name of your store on the sign outside. Either way, I am so happy to have found you!

O. M. G. ... Google, please increase your star rating options because Bread and Sons has just blown me away, and 5 stars just isnt enough. We had the tempeh and gauda sandwiches, a garlicy slice of pizza with jalapeno (do not overlook the pizza here), two pastries (an almond-ey, custurd-ey, blueberry croissant and this expresso cream filled pain au chocolat type deal topped with copious amounts of nutty goodness), and lattes of course. I wish I remembered the names and all the ingredients, but what I will never forget is the insanity of all this. So, so, so, so, so tasty (to the power of infinity). Flavours = bursting; freshness = *chefs kiss*; texture = soft and crispy in all the right ways. I could write more but first let me have the best nap of my life courtesy of some of the best sandwiches, pastry and pizza Ive ever had. Yall are special, and I cant believe I live two blocks away and waited so long to enjoy your transcendent deliciousness. Cant wait to be back - thank you for all that you do!!!

I tried this bakery while on a visit to Ottawa. I got a sourdough loaf, a spinach and feta roll and an almond croissant. Both pastries were still warm when I got them and they were quite tasty. The loaf was soft on the inside and kept well for the next 3 days.

Here the bakery trade is practiced with love. You can taste this in their products! Many times in the morning we picked up our breakfast there or ate it there if there was room. When you enter, the delicious baking smell hits you. Everything we bought was tasty and well liked. Even the take-away tea! Whats really a shame are 1) the very limited opening hours, 2) a run-out policy (so if you want delicious croissants, you have to get there early!) and 3) far too few seats inside and outside. A shame, because I think they can achieve much more turnover by creating more seats. But all the ladies who work there in the bakery deserve my 5 stars for their craft!

A great spot for lunch on Bank St! They offer sandwiches, pizza, paninis, cookies and other baked goods. I got the Gouda sandwich - tastes amazing grilled! The focaccia bread is crunchy and the ingredients go so well together. Arugula, peppers, capers, roasted onions, potatoes, dill ranch and Gouda. Very filling for $12!

I have tried their pizza, broccoli cheddar quiche, peach/pistachio pie, feta pastry and spinach/cheese pastry. Absolutely everything I tried was amazing. I was lucky to get their pastries fresh out of the oven. Steaming hot and sinfully delicious. Cant recommend this place enough for your next breakfast, lunch and sweets.

The only word that can describe this place is FANTASTIC! You can taste their professionalism in their products! Phil and Sebastian beans?!?!?! Yes pleaseeeeee The only suggestion I have is a dial up for their machine to extract the best flavour out of the beans!

While the quality of the baking is very good, as someone who lives just down the street Im confused by the choice of opening hours. Ive tried to use Bread & Sons as my local bakery but it seems like their priority is being a lunch destination for people who commute to downtown rather than being a bakery for the people who actually live around them in Centretown. Opening at 8:30am (and the actual bread often isnt ready until 9 or later) pretty much excludes any local from picking up a loaf before work. Likewise, closing at 2 means I cant get bread after work either. Having 11-5 as hours would be about the same amount of opening time, still capture the lunch crowd, but also give locals a chance to come after work. Opening at 8:30 doesnt even capture most of the morning commuters since most people are already at work.

Ive come here twice now, its typically hard for me to make it here when theyre open due to the limited hours. Their bread is pretty good. I find their selection is not as good as other local bakeries, especially for types of bread for a store called bread & sons. I also came on a Saturday to get bread and was told on Saturdays they only sell day old bread, which wasnt exactly what I was hoping for. Overall the bread is okay but Ive preferred other local bakeries, and their selection feels limited. Definitely better than youre going to get at a super market so worth it if thats the alternative.

Irresistable Ottawa downtown bakery. There is no bad bite at Bread and Sons. Dessert, pizza, coffee, pastries, and bread of course, all freshly made and smelling/tasting amazing. Pizza toppings are gourmet and not the standard pepperoni or standard fare you can buy from the larger chains and shops. Bread and Sons makes their pizza with other ingredients that shine.

I love this bakery so much. I live 10 min walk and come at least twice a week. Everything I try is always so delicious and fresh,always leaves me amazed at how good it tastes.Not the cheapest bakery, but you pay for the quality and craftsmanship that goes into making high quality baked goods and treats. Only downside is they aren t open on the weekends but it s understandable with COVID-19. Keep up the great work!

100% hands down best lunch bakery and pizza downtown. The focaccia pizzas are incredibly scrumptious and the hazelnut chocolate cookie is the best cookie in town. The pizzas and croissants are to die for and we almost always get the spinach spiral and the feta sesame square in our religiously weekly order :) Love this place!!

1. Staff are amazingly friendly! 2. Good selection of vegan options 3. The tempeh sandwich, last but not the least important point here (but, the best for last, like eating the top of a muffin last! (Their vegan pumpkin one!!)) Anyways, So back to the sandwich... Time stops while eating it, its that good! Always excellent food, always excellent service. Get a loaf of their bread, put your favourite source of fat (butter, olive oil sauce, whatever) and just enjoy it. Pick any slice of pizza. Pick any sandwich. Bloody good. Fantastic vegetarian options.

Excellent food and super friendly staff! Im a vegatarian and they always have the yummiest lunches! Only downside is they close early (I think 2pm) so get there by lunchtime or youll miss out!

Very good place, pizza is pretty good althought a little bit expensive for my appetite, staff are quick and their cookies and chocolate croissants are awesome but also a little bit expensive to my tastes.

I finally got to try Bread&Sons! I enjoyed all the pastries I got. Hand pie, and chocolate hazelnut cookie were my favorite. The almond custard croissant and the quiche were nice as well. I would visit again!

My favourite bakery to go to! Discovered this place in 2016 summer, and I was in love. Every bite has so much quality and one is definitely satiated after eating here.

Great pizza. Excellent bread; whole wheat and sourdough. Lots of other delicious baked goods both sweet and savoury. Always busy at lunch is a clue that this place is a little gem. The chocolate chip hazelnut cookies are to die for.

Each ingredient is perfectly calibrated to enhance the overall flavor, and furthermore, its delivery is on an incredible handmade focaccia bread... Amazing baked goods

I have been a regular costumer at Bread and sons for at least 2 years . They have never failed me . Amazing selection of quality bakery that is locally sources and strictly vegetarian . Selection is fairly wide and pleases all tastes . Breakfast and lunch menus are equally delicious . Line up is busy but moves fast . Only thing is I would recommend pick up as space is too tight and not well- ventilated . In my experience , Best bakery in Ottawa .

The baked goods are amazing, and so are the lattes. And the price is still very good. I recommend everyone try their chocolate chip cookies.

Great place downtown for a grab and go lunch or satisfy your sweet tooth. I love their tasty selection of vegetarian sandwiches and pizza, they will even heat them up for you if you choose. I have a weakness for their bread and baked goods. Support local businesses if your in the area! Did I mention how good their baked goods are?

This tiny bakery offers a remarkable selection of baked treats, from Viennoiserie to muffins, cookies, mini-quiches, breads, etc. They also make delicious thin-crust pizzas, available by the slice, sandwiches, salads and great coffee. I always end up buying way too much!

A Centretown staple so monumental it barely needs an exterior sign on its storefront. These are the best cookies in the entire city. Yup, that is not an exaggeration. The perfectly chocolate cookie will make you shed tears of joy, just a heads up. Also, their breakfast croissant sandwich is pretty much unbeatable, especially at the price.
