Walked in less than 30 minutes from closing according to google maps, still got DELICIOUS cannoli for mom and I, and apparently a DELICIOUS pecan tart for dad. Definitely will stop in whenever I'm back in the city.
The warm Portugese tart from this place was my favourite dessert I've had in Ottawa. The combination of the crispy outer texture and creamy filling was delightful. I wish I could have come back again to buy a bunch to take back in my suitcase. The other pastry I had from the bakery, the cream-filled horn, was also delicious. I'll be sure to visit again when I come back. The service was also very friendly and inviting.
Very nice staff and fresh bakery, had some nice hot chocolate croissants would definitely come back here again
Reviewing about their tarts alone, it was very good🙌🏼. I’m not sure what the other reviews were complaining about, but it was delicious. My favourite parts were the thick filling held perfectly within the fluffy & crispy tart. The place itself wasn’t posh but it’s a worth it trip for the tarte 👌🏼
Delightful little underappreciated bakery that does fresh bread and great treats. Tried the cannoli on a whim and it was thoroughly delicious, with lightly flakey pastry and delicious cream. Would recommend to one and all
Nice small bakery in the city. Fresh buns and breads, for the location the Portuguese Tarts are over priced and not that fresh.. It has to adjust prices considered the location and dinein option.
A hidden gem in Ottawa. The falafel, almond croissants and such are always fresh and amazing. Fresh buns and loafs. It’s a genuine mom and pop style bakery.
Now also known as SYRIAN KITCHEN (says on their new business cards). Based on what I have overheard and read, this place is now owned and operated by Syrian families, employing some recent refugees. They have retained the Portuguese name and products from working with the previous co-owner. This is currently the only place you can get Syrian falafel in town. They gave me and my partner each a sample falafel to try - the falafels were flavourful, crispy on the outside and moist inside. I liked it much better than a lot of other falafels in town!!! $0.65 each if you were to buy. Looks like they are made to order, or the pre-made ones are within the hour and fresh. We tried the Syrian falafel wrap ($6) and Beef steak sandwich ($7) and both were delicious. Don't expect the food to come super fast like other shawarma-type places because they don't have an assembly line. For the beef steak sandwich, they sauteed mushrooms and onions along with the beef on their grill until caramelized, which took a while, but it tasted so homey and fresh. Beef was a little tough but the flavour was good. We got a bunch of natas (Portuguese egg tarts) and they were really good. $1.75 each. We also got a bunch of kibbehs (beef croquettes) - which I have just reheated and am eating right now on Day #2 - and they are flavourful and still juicy inside even after reheating. 5/5 would buy again. And of course we got extra Syrian falafels to go....because they're so good and we eat them like cookies. Lovely people, homey food at very reasonable prices. Cannot wait to come back again. Minus 1 star because service is slow and for the lack of ambiance/space if you want to dine in.
Best Portuguese egg tarts in town
If I could give 0 stars, I would. Worst place ever with horrible customer service. I went to buy a Bolo Rei (King Cake), and it was frozen. The woman working there told us to put it in the oven to warm it up. PRODUSTS ARE NOT FRESH HERE. I requested a refund, but the woman working there kept telling me that it was not possible. She said to come back tomorrow to talk to the owner for a refund. When I asked for the owners phone number, she denied my request. NOT HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE RECEIVED. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!
Food very tasty and fresh. Very friendly service
Very nice service and everything is good!
Best pastries-desserts in Ottawa. Beautiful clean quaint coffee/tea house with baked goods.
Awesome small bakery in this neighborhood so close to downtown. We had pastéis de natas freshly baked by Huda and Amer and they were delicious! They also serve Sirian food and we will try it on or next visit to Ottawa.
Best bread in Ottawa.
Adorable little family run place!! I love the bread here, but the new items - the Pasteis de Nata, are quickly becoming my favourite and new addiction. The custard is perfect, and when theyre fresh out of the oven the dough is so flakey and buttery. Reminds me of being in Lisbon. Cant recommend enough!!
Beautiful little bakery right in the heart of downtown. Its also refreshing to be greeted with a smile. Its something thats fallen by the wayside these days.
Pastel de nata are absolute perfection ! Made in house! This is a destination!
Absolutely the best Nata I have ever had! Also the service was amazing, the people are so friendly and kind. Will be coming back
Amazingly delicious Portuguese tarts!
Super friendly stuff and delicious food Highly recommend this place
Absolutely delicious food. The croissants filled with this apple-y, cinnamon-y gooey inside are amazing. The chocolate cookies are so yummy. The kaiser rolls are crisp and crunch on the outside with a pillow-y light interior. And those tarts? Divine. And then there is the Syrian food on offer. I have never had such delicious falafel before, so fluffy, so light, so tasty. The beef sandwich (in a pita) is also unreal. Extremely friendly service, they even offered me a free sample. This summer theyve upgraded the little patio out front with cute tables and fresh hanging baskets of flowers. This is a lovely part of the neighbourhood. Highly recommend.
Excellent Syrian food. I think it was earlier Portuguese bakery which shifted ownership. The food quality and quantity is very good.
This bakery is not Portuguese and it s not as beautiful and appealing as the pics show. I was disappointed.
Not really a Portuguese bakery. Day old buns and a handful of pastries on a Saturday. Pictures on here are not a representation of what they offer at all.
We came for the Natas and portuguese cornmeal bread, which are very nice, but tried the Syrian baked goods and enjoyed them as well. They had me at pistachio!
Egg tarts: the crust was flaky and good, but the custard didnt have the rich taste or aroma that come from egg yolks. Instead, it tasted like sugar paste. Maybe this is a different recipe that what Im used to.
Patéis de Nata (custard tarts) are outstanding
Best middle eastern food in town. Family owned restaurant you won t regret it. Try their cherry beef and you ll be back every week! Thank you Rami and the Addas family for the amazing derive
Love the Syrian kitchen. Really nice folks working there; great food.
Fresh bakery items are delicious, I tried a sandwich and some falafel and they were great also! Very friendly and have offered me free samples multiple times.
A warning to the Portuguese in Ottawa. The positive reviews of the egg tarts are coming from mangia cakes. The natas are frozen, rubbery, and overly sweet to compensate. If youre a pork chop looking for the classic flakey custard delight, youre going to be greatly disappointed. The staff are nice and Im sure the falafels are great but I dont think there is anything Portuguese about Portuguese Bakery.
I love this Portuguese bakery . The staff is very friendly! The bread, sweet cookies and all of the food is delicious!!!
Love this place quality and inexpensive. Intersting combo of Portuguese and Syrian.
Recently tried out the ice cream, ashta with pistachio, delicious, i would definitely recommend it.
Great place for bread, pastries and food! Amazing smell as soon as you walk in.
I purchased some falafel, tabbouleh, and hummus here today and it was delicious. Also the staff was really kind and helpful!
So delicious
By far, the best bread in Ottawa! The egg tarts are superb and to die for! I stayed in Portugal two winters ago and this bakery brings back the best. Easy street parking .
Disappointed -- I came Saturday afternoon, and asked if the egg tarts were freshly baked from today, and it was an emphatic YES! But when I tasted them leaving the store, the curst was not crispy, was soft, and clearly not from today. They were still ok, but dont try to pass off a day old pastry for a fresh baked one. Just tell me its day old. At least then I would have come back for a fresh one, and probably written a much better review. I didnt taste the bread so I cant comment on that.
Amazing food and service. A slice of Syria in the heart of Ottawa
Nice bread place
I have lived down the street from the Portuguese Bakery for nealry 20 years. I have many fond memories of stopping in for a pineapple Sumol and custard tarts! If you want to feel right at home this is the place. The baked goods are beyond fresh and delicious and everyone who works there is incredibly kind...i mean genuinely kind and that radiates from their hearts into every lovely morsel they create! I recommend the custard tarts and the falafels are out of this world!! Thank you for all your years of deliciousness Portuguese Bakery!!
I love this place. Best falafels you can get and the humus is divine. Try a falafel sandwich for just 7 dollars with lots of good pickled and fresh veggies. I always take my own container to take some falafels home. Strongly recommended this place.
We spent some time in Portugal and have done pastry classes on making the local treat Pasteis de Nata. We were excited to find a bakery in Ottawa that serves these treats. They were delicious!
We got a donut filled with cream and a bulgarian pastry and it was divine. I would highly recommend and ladies, this one is for you. You should go just to see the beautiful man at the counter.
I found hair in some of my food, tried to get my money back and leave but they wouldnt reimburse me. I was put off and didnt want more food for obvious reasons. Got into a big argument over their stupidity.
I dropped by unexpected and boy am I glad I did. I got the Syrian falafel and it was one of the best falafel I ever had. The owner was super friendly and I most definitely will be back.
Was out for a walk one day and went in on a whim. Was pleasantly surprised how good the cannoli was! The Syrian kitchen was closed so I will have to come back another time to check them out!
Had been meaning to try this place for a while, since Ive had some great Portuguese bread and there arent many Portuguese bakeries around in Ottawa. Picked up some buns, and they were so delicious. Its kind of out of the way, for me at least, but its definitely worth a try.
Important to note: this single location is a Portuguese bakery and also a Syrian kitchen. The gentleman involved with the Syrian kitchen indicated that they supply a lot of retail stores with their prepared goods. Walked out of there with fallafel wraps, fatoush salad, and Portuguese pastries. Will be back.
It is a bit out of the way, but the egg tarts are worth it.
The Portuguese pastries were amazing. Ill be back to try the Syrian food.
A couple of years ago I was going through a divorce, not seeing my child for months and roaming the streets of downtown all day and night, lost in my mind and starving. One late night, I smelled the aroma of wonderfully fresh baked bread and follwed my nose to this mom and pop looking bakery surounded by residences and encountered a genteman outside. I mentioned to him that I was starving and he led me inside and said take whatever you wish. I took a few buns and devoured them while we shared our life stories and had the opportunity of meeting one of the most inspiring gentleman that helped me through those problematic times.
A diamond in the rough. A hidden gem. Portuguese bakery has some of the best Falafels and breads in town. Small bakeries like this are rare and this one must be recognized for revamping their look and offering sandwiches as to go meals.
Wonderful treasure. Id highly recommend paying this place a visit. Syrian Kitchen also serves food from here.
I went in on a Friday afternoon for the custard tarts...they were not fresh, and too sweet. Husband got a cannoli, and the shell was not crunchy. He said the filling was good though. Everything looked better than it tasted.
Pastries were bland and dry. One item was even cold, as if it had been recently thawed from a freezer. Very disappointing.
Amazing little family bakery. They also serve sandwiches with saj (thin pan fried bread) Syrian style. Absolutely delicious, fresh and made to order. Try the Taboule, Egg plant dip, Mutabbal, and loads more :)
Good pastry , good bread ,nice service
Few selections but still great
The best chocolate croissant you will ever have. I have not tried anything else yet but will soon. The bread looks really good.
Good variety of breads.
Amazing falafels, very kind people and the most delicious donuts!
Cute little place. The pastries are okay. Limited selections here.
Great bread with no additives. Nice little pastries. Always day fresh.
