Mahal Tanjore (Previously Thanjai Ottawa) Restaurant in Ottawa

The best Tamil Nadu style restaurant in Ottawa with affordable price for food. It has authentic taste and flavours of Tamil Nadu soil. Especially their breakfast buffet during the weekends from 10am to 1pm for just 16$ is the favourite of mine. I go often there to have the tasty breakfast items in which my priorities are poori, set dosai and idly. They are delicious. Last but not the least, they have introduced newly the chicken biryani which is recently my favourite in their restaurant. Currently they are giving it as BOGO for just less than 20$ in uber eats. It is delicious and has authentic Tamil Nadu biriyani taste. I m not a big fan of Hyderabad biriyani and absolutely people who are fond of that may not like this biriyani. However, their biriyani is like mother made home biriyani which I can t find anywhere in Ottawa. I order it often too. I could see that they make food being socially responsible with the ingredients they add which are not harmful to us. This shows that they are health conscious too. If you re fond of Tamil Nadu style food, blindly this restaurant would be the best choice. My favourite restaurant in Ottawa.

We got the lamb Biryani (10/10) and boneless chicken curry (9.223/10), both recommendations by the server. Also I hear the Perrier is excellent. This review has been peer reviewed by a doctor (PhD, so not a real doctor)

I drove all the way to eat here, it said open online, when I went inside, they said the chef didn t come to it s closed, went without food

Everything was delicious!

I gave it a 5 stars before but sometimes Dosa can absolutely tasteless. Cook on 2nd Nov around 9:30 pm did a terrible job with 3 masala dosa. Not just dosa but samber and coconut chutney were very watery too. This place is a hit or miss depending on the cook on that day I guess

I absolutely love this restaurant. I get lunch every now and then and it s always delicious and the staff is so nice.

Great South Indian restaurant in Ottawa. Tried out their lamb and chicken biriyani and it was fabulous. The quantity was filling and there was so many lamb and chicken pieces. Service was also pretty good and fast. Wondering why they have a low rating.

Good Breakfast. Enjoyed it. They just need to get washrooms clean , so many flies , unhygienic.

Mahal Tanjore has a large menu of incredibly flavourful food with something for everyone. My dosa was served with a lovely mild spice, just as I requested. I am a big fan of the desserts as well. The restaurant is tucked away just off the main path - a hidden gem of The Glebe. A must for Indian food lovers.

The menu is extensive. Great options, delicious too. Jinu provided knowledgeable, kind and friendly service. A gem of a soul. Dietary restrictions: Veg, gluten free, vegan .... All available on the menu

The service was not great. I expect a bit more product quality for this price. The masala inside the dosa was cold and the crepe was cold too. The staff s were busy and i tend to find the servers does not have hospitality skillsets including lack od unattendiveness. The sides did not fultfill for a typical masala dosa platter,the chutneys were cold beyond thr room temperature also a lot of south indian eateries include stuff like vada.in their dosa platters for that kind of a price. I felt like this place lacks competition for south indian eateries so they have some good inbound traffic.There are certainly a lot of room to improve!

After the new management, their food standards have gone down drastically. We ordered Pani Puri, Cauliflower Manchurian, Chicken Dosa, Masala Dosa and Filter Coffee. They did not have Idli, Masala Vada, Pav Bhaji. With Pani Puri they gave Dosa Bhaji as filling. The Cauliflower was not cooked well and it was way too sweet. Chicken Dosa had barely any chicken filling , it had more of Aloo filling. Masala Dosa was soggy and burnt. When told the server she mentioned that is how they make it! Coffee was great. The service was quick and the atmosphere just have a look at the fan on the ceiling you will see how clean it is.

I ordered bisibelabath through Uber Eats today, but they mixed a random sambar with the Pongal and sent it as bisibelabath. Anyone ordering rice dishes from this restaurant should be cautious, as they might combine different dishes unexpectedly. I am extremely unhappy.

We were expecting a more elegant atmosphere, but it has more of a cafeteria feel. However, the food is excellent and the service friendly and prompt. We will definitely put this on our restaurant rotation. Best Indian food we have had in Ottawa! (The dahl is amazing!)

Simply Superb. Very good options for vegetarians. Sambar is out of the world. Paneer Butter Masala with Fried rice or Parotta is something that you must absolutely taste here. Excellent menu, friendly and professional service, clean and pleasant ambience. Highly recommend.

Biryani was awesome!

The food is incredible, especially the Lamb Biriyani!

Rava masala dosa was good. However the chilly paneer dosa was not good at all.

We ordered a large catering order for dinner for an event that we held with more than 500 guests. The dinner food was delcious and we got all the food boxes delivered on time. Everyone who attended the event enjoyed the dinner. We also ordered tea from them and everyone enjoyed the tea very much. Everything was given for a reasonable price with very good quantites. We had a very good customer service as well. They were very flexible with our needs. We highly recommend this place if you would like to have some delicious Indian food!

Excellent South Indian restaurant in Ottawa. Dosas and Idlies are top notch and availabile through out the day. Their sambar is absolutely delicious Parking can be tough on weekends.

I strongly suggest to try the morning breakfast buffet. Coffee was next level of surprise it is good.

Used to really enjoy this place, went back after more than a year. The food quality has really gone down. We ordered the sambar vada and the vadas were presoaked in water !!!!! The horror!! I was really looking forward to crispy vadas with Sambar and instead we got a really soggy mess. We ordered the uttapam, rava dosa and the mysore masala dosa, the food was strictly ok, the mysore dosa was flat soft and cold. Overall a disappointing experience from what used to be a really good place for South indian.

This is not our first time eating at this place. It is because we love the food that we keep returning. They said that they have stopped the thali system because of the work involved. Now they offer a buffet for 15 dollars which they claim is a huge hit. We did not take the buffet and ordered ala carte. As i mentioned their food is really tasty and good. I believe they make one of the best curry dishes in the country - be it chicken / fish or shrimp. Prices are mid range and portions are ample. Keep time in hand though as food takes long to come. I am not complaining as you forget the wait time once the food arrives - you will be busy eating. They have bathrooms available which are clean and paid parking outside. If you are looking for good South Indian food in Ottawa or Montreal then go here.

Visited the place for an unlimited breakfast buffet. All the South Indian breakfast items were delicious and met our expectations of the taste of India. Will visit again and much recommended.

Today, I bought chili parotta. It is the worst chilli parotta, I have had in my entire life. The Chilli parotta was so horrible to make me develop an aversion to my favorite food. I also ordered chilli onion masal rava dosa. It contained neither chilli nor onion nor it was spicy. Basically, the masala is a mashed potato puree, which is not it is supposed to be. I also ordered chilli paneer masala dosa, which was again horrible. Raw paneer was mixed with the potato puree. The paneer lacked any taste whatsoever. The sambar felt like it was old and was reheated. The chutneys were horrible. Honestly, I make a better dosa and chutney than them and I m not even a chef. They should understand that people are coming for a good time and good food, not so that you can maximize their profit margin at the cost of the customers. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO ANYONE

Mahal Tanjore has become, one of our go to places in Ottawa. We love all of their dishes. But mainly, their buffet exceeded my expectations. I really appreciate how they serve the same food for buffet and regular. Worth every penny. The team is welcoming and professional. Their Idli sambar,vadai looks and tastes like home food. The food used to be decent before. It has become worse recently. I had difficulty in my stomach for whole night. The dosa is sweeter these days. Not worth the cost. This is not authentic south Indian food. Update on the reply from owner. I felt uneasiness after eating the food for whole night. This does not happen normally for Me and i eat in lot of restaurants. The owner asked for a doctor s note in reply. Thank god i need not go to the doctor yet and i had some powdered ginger at home which eased my stomach the next day. This restaurant owner does not take criticism as a tool cook quality food. He mentions there are lot of 5 star review recently given by customers. I was eager to check on it but guess what lot of people had given him low ratings especially people who had eaten authentic south India food. To the owner, Don t come back at the people who comment your food is not great, we have reasons for it. We had paid for the food and if i feel the food is not good i will comment. If you are having this attitude then good luck.

They have lost the quality of food they used to be famous for. Ordered dosa which tastes Somewhat sweet and sambhar had no taste along with the chutneys. I was a regular visitor previously but now for the last 3-4 times I have always been disappointed. Food

The food is very good, the staff and service is also very good. We visited for the buffet and loved Pongal, Dosa, Idly and kanji. The chutney were nice except the spicy garlic chutney (a little salty). Thing to note: Its a small place and so can get cramped. Make sure you reserve or at least call and check before going. Parking can be an issue.

The food was amazing, server was very friendly/polite. Place is a bit small and unassuming, but I would highly recommend to anyone.

I really liked the food. The food was great and fresh. No complaints about the food or the service. What did bother my experience and what made me take some stars away was the organization of the business. I think they may have been severely understaffed for a full restaurant. Which also lead to our meals being served nearly 10mins a part (my friend had to watch me eat til their meal came) . All in all i dont think I would return unless it was slow business day for them. I didnt mind waiting 20mins for a table, but at a restaurant I do wish I couldve eaten with my table. Edit : I tried again almost a year later, a few times actually. Food was still good enjoyed our meal and our service was better. One thing that bothered me was I ordered the pani poori. And when i asked for additional crackers she wanted to charge me $4 for 6 additional crackers. The whole app is 7$ on happy hour so it felt like a slight price gouge. Nonetheless I didnt take the extra and was satisfied with everything else. Chili chicken also had a strange smell but sauce was good. The mango sangria is fantastic.

Enjoyed the unlimited buffet breakfast for $14. Quality food. Menu contains Kanji(papaya sooru) with small onion, soft Idlies, Sambar, potato masal, Semiya kichadi, ven pongal, Medhu vada, and dosa. All are unlimited. With coconut chutney, Tomato chutney and Poondu (Garlic) chutney.. Coffee and masala tea were also included in the buffet breakfast menu. Fantastic!

Whenever we make a trip from Montreal to Ottawa, we make sure to satisfy our dosa cravings from here. Great tasting food and good service. They have better quantity as compared to the Montreal locations for the same price. Loving it!

One of Ottawas culinary gems. We recently discovered Mahal Tanjore and it quickly became a family favourite because of its authentic food and convenient location. Vegetarian options: Very pleased that there are so many vegetarian options.

I ordered a masala dosa and it was really good. I liked the quantity of chutney and sambhar given. Additionally tomato chutney was also given which was spice enough. The dosa was sufficiently large and good enough for 1 person.

We just came back from lunch at this restaurant. Our dosa was not crispy and stuck to our plate and food was lukewarm. Water was warm. Waitress never came to ask if we wanted anything. When we paid the bill and complained about the dosa, she said when your order was ready I was busy with other things and asked if we wanted another one. We were about to leave and expected us to wait for another bad dosa? We have eaten here previously and enjoyed our food. Waste of money and time. Will never go back. We were planning to bring some more people in the near future but will not.

Visited with family after reading reviews, which says best South Indian food, I am not sure if they never had authentic South indian food or if they are paid or dummy reviews. In the name of Sambhar, it was plain daal, mysore malasa dosa was bland, not sure if they ran out of masala or what. Please save your money and visit some other place. Servers were polite, nothing against them.

Everytime we visit Ottawa we make sure we have a meal with Maha Tanjore. We just love their food always feel like home cooked and freshly served.

This time it makes me disappointed. I ordered chilly chicken and garlic dosa, the quality of chilli chicken was disgusting chicken quality was not good it was hard to chew as well as the dosa was very salty it seems like they changed their cook.

It was my first visit on Saturday.l ordered three different dosa it was so delicious and samabhar is too good l like to visit again

First time visiting off a recommendation from Instagram @yumyumyow. The 4 ft Dosa enticed me to try! It was a showstopper too! Other guests asked to take photos with it too! Ate with four others and enjoyed our meal. Ordered lamb biryani, and the lunch All-You-Can-Eat dosa, Mushroom and Chili Garlic. Everyone was thoroughly satisfied. The one thing that let us down was that not all dosas were available to eat. One of us tried to order 3 different dosas and the staff let us know that they were all out.

This used to be our go to place for South Indian food. Now they have increased the price for each item substantially. $15 for chilly idly? And $17 for masala Dosa? I would recommend the owners to go around and check Canadian restaurants into fine dining and check the portion size. When you order something at red lobster for $17 you are getting lot of protein with some carbs and a big portion to share between 2. Honestly, Im ready to pay $17 for dosa if that is filling for one person. Guys please look at the size and thickness of your dosa and compare it with Toronto sarvana Bhawan. I dont click pictures at this restaurant because food here is just staple for me

I had dinner with a friend here while visiting Ottawa, and I can see why it is one of my friends favourite restaurants! The food was incredible, well priced, and the service was fantastic. I love that you can eat indoors or on the patio. This is very much a family friendly restaurant, so be prepared for kids playing and a louder atmosphere. The staff are really helpful for navigating dietary restrictions, and there are plenty of fantastic vegetarian and vegan options for every pallette. Dietary restrictions: Vegetarian and vegan options. Many dishes can be made vegan on request.

We visited this place for dinner during out Ottawa visit. South Indian items are good but the Chinese orders turned out to be really bad. Staff was courteous.

We ordered gobi manchurian, noodles and egg kothu roti. catering coordinator, siju really did good job. He just delivered really yummy food. Noodles and egg kothu are fluffy and delicious. Fully satisfied and happy !!

The food certainly had a taste as if it was made the previous day. Even items like papad arrived soggy from the kitchen. The chicken dishes we ordered were abundant in bones and lacked sufficient meat pieces. Additionally, some of the dishes we ordered were later informed to be unavailable in the kitchen after a significant wait. The pricing of everything was notably high considering the lack of taste, ambiance, and service.

Updated review for the Tanjore! With new management, the food quality has been elevated but the customer service has gone to zero! We literally had to walk-down to order our food and even for water as waiter took the jug but never came back! They should change theme to the buffet if can t handle the peak period!

Very good south Indian food. Love their chicken 65 and chilly chicken. Also ordered fish pakora and chili idli. Both were excellent. Their mango Lassi is a must have when eating there. Vegetarian options: Many very tasty and good vegetarian options to eat here.

Everything was perfect. I was helped right away and my food came quick. The quantity and quality was amazing. Went to the bathroom and came back and my drink and a cup of water with a plate and utensils were set where I was sitting and not long afterwards I was given my food. I ordered Pani Puri. Tried the masala dosa

The dosa bro with sambar and raita so good We also had chili chicken which was OK, too oily for me but thats not the star of this place. Dosa was unbelievable! Had the mysore dosa and added chana into it. So. Friggin. Delicious. Very good portion too, we all had leftovers to take home. Plus classic Fanta It was crowded so service was a bit slow but dont care! Worth it!

Everything tasted as if it was cooked in the morning, heated and served(Except the Dosas). I ordered Eggplant curry with Naan and Naans were frozen Naans heated in the oven. I asked if they were frozen. The Lady answered with very rude expressions that it was not frozen Naans but they also didnt cook it in the kitchen. I had an absolutely amazing time and food here. Me and my friends are new to the town and had no idea what to get but our host Chaitanya was very sweet and patient with us. She suggested us to have Lamb biryani, chicken 65 and, sweet and salty lime soda which were delicious. Loved my experience there and we will for sure visit again and again!!!!!

Im very much satisfied with the food which i ordered for catering for my birthday. I ve called the manager and asked whether they could provide me with the kerala style chicken biriyani and yaayy they said yess and that too at affordable price and the food was really delicious and yummy, felt like im back at home after one year. Loved my experience at Mahal Tanjore Restaurant Ottawa. Super friendly staff- the guy who was working there and helped me and my friends to choose the food, it was so good. I had Coriander masala dosa and Chicken 65, felt like im at home after so many years. Excellent service and definitely coming back.

Good: veg biriyani and idlis were good. Bad: 1. The dosa was soggy. 2. We were made wait for tea at the very end, and they served the tea in cups even though we had mentioned for takeout.

The quality of the food going down the drain . Was here today . Coconut chutney is just coconut paste . The vada was not the real way of making it . Mettu vada was oily ( like the urad daal was ground with rice) to stretch thr amount and the server , is not friendly. There is nothing South Indian about this pjs d anymore and I am a South Indian

Definitely overpriced for the quality of food. Husband ordered items for delivery and order was wrong. Called the restaurant and they were not helpful and denied it.

Disappointed with this place. The food quality has dropped drastically since the last visit. Rava dosa was totally blend no taste at all, And sambhar tasted like normal dal. Paid $140 for three people and was disappointed with food taste. Won t recommend it to anyone until they improve the taste.

Ordered the mushroom masala dosa and butter chicken, For the dosa it was very very small portions the food was good. But I was still hungry after the meal and it was still $16 per plate. I would say more of an appetizer size. The dosa was also flat and a bit soggy and the potato was lukewarm. Whereas I prefer a more crisp dosa. The butter chicken taste and portion size was adequate but it tasted as though they used tandoori chicken in the butter chicken which just gave the chicken a very different flavour from the rest of the dish They were also out of almost every beer on their menu. The service was odd, there was a female server asking questions about India and putting on what sounded like a fake Indian accent which we found off putting. She also didn t seem to treat the other server well, and got upset that the other server took an extra second bringing out serving plates (which we were not concerned about). Our primary server, another lady I think named Vayamara (it said Vayamara on the receipt) was very helpful and provided good service but loomed over uncomfortably when we were paying our bill and choosing a tip. The atmosphere in the restaurant was fine, could use a good clean, new coat of paint and softer lighting. Vegetarian options: Many options on the menu Parking: Several, paid 2 hour 7am-7pm free evenings Kid-friendliness: Kids eat free menu seemed good.

Amazing flavours and spices, super fresh. Lamb Masala dosa specialty is exceptional. Highly recommend.

Had chilli chicken, dosa, chetinar(something similar) Chicken, parota and South Indian coffee. Loved all of it. Taste vise its super. Parking: Free parking on weekends only or you can park in the city multilayer paid parking lot across the street.

Worst place for the food . Totally disappointed,we ordered chicken biryani it s not biryani , it s look like tamarind rice , shrimp fry is salty, lemon juice tastes like a water ,. Won t not recommend. Don t waste your money.

Food is of poor quality. So expensive for what? Indian food should be the most flavorful. I would not recommend even to my kutta.

Very disappointing, again; and waste of money!! Service is not good; how some people get their meals before the other guest s even 30mins apart/timed (when other guests were already done :) very odd/embarrassing as we had a special guest out of town). Okay can understand somewhat but the latest order arrived, seemed rushed in kitchen (after complaining) with subpar stuffing (uncooked). Sambhar (condiments portion) is pathetic (taste more like potato curry with big chunks of potatoes). One of dosa was served cold. Coconut chutney was running water w/o any flavor. Nice/hard working waiter kept apologizing (owner/manager should be responsible). Looks like they focus more on skip and uber than dining in guests.

This used to be my go to spot for my family and I but the last experience with the food was not great. The food was much more spicy than normal and the.quality of the other dishes including the taste was off. The only difference I had was that I did a take away. I am not sure if the kitchen staff changed or the management changed but I did see a big difference! I used to have great feedback on this place earlier. I hope this is one time and they continue with their great service/food. I will probably change it based on my next experience!
