Thali – the Indian word for this platter. It will have small bowls – or “khatoris” – with vegetables, curries, and milk products, as well as rice, pulses, bread and a desserts. Its components correspond to the modern day food pyramid, yet its beginnings were part of ancient Hindu cultural traditions. It is believed to have its basis in Ayurveda, the science behind yoga. The idea behind a Thali is to offer all the 6 different flavours of sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy on one single plate. Thali has award-winning chef, Joe Thottungal, and his long-time chef de cuisine, Rajesh Gopi, at the helm. They have 6-7 dishes for each Thali. Vegan and gluten-free options are also available.
I got the traditional Thali with Shrimp and unfortunately it was a let down when it came to the taste of vegetable curries. The 3-4 curries that come with it were kinda bland or uninspiring. I guess this place is popular because of its location, presentation and clientele, but don’t mistake it for serving good Indian food. Trust me, the Thali is not hard to pull off if you can get at least 2 out of the 4 dishes right.
Their chicken curry may not be on the website menu, but it is on the IRL menu, and it was so good. The shrimp curry dish was very light and pretty good too. The poratha was an amazing texture and a little sweet which made it very tasty. Service was top notch, refilling water more than other restaurants, replacing plates & cutlery, and checking in at appropriate times with a smile. While the price may be a little more than other restaurants, I believe it is well worth the price given the quality of food and service. Definitely coming back once in a while.
Had the lunch shrimp thali special. Vibrant, colorful, flavourful and satisfying. Small portion of 3 shrimp but they were perfectly cooked and served in an unctuous, creamy sauce. Dipping the flatbread into the sauce was definitely the highlight. Thali also had beets, lentil soup, zucchini in tomato sauce, yogurt raita, and a sweet mystery that was delicious. Service was great. Fast and in and out in under an hour. Make sure you get a reservation! Highly recommend
Great food in a bright and modern restaurant. Service is fast here, which makes it perfect for lunch on a workday. The menu is fairly small but versatile and has delicious options on it.
Lamb ribs roast was awesome, and of course full platter was delicious. Service was overwhelming, we ordered lamb ribs roast and it contains two pieces, but we were three, they added one more piece without charge. Nice hospitality.
Thali offered a dining experience that was quite average. The food was acceptable, with some dishes being more enjoyable than others. The service was adequate, meeting basic expectations without standing out. If you’re looking for a reasonable place to eat, Thali is a fair option.
This was our first visit to Thali in Ottawa, and we arrived with high expectations and excitement after a four-hour drive. We ordered the vegetarian and beef thali, beef curry, salmon fish curry, few drinks and Kerala porathas. However, the porathas were more like Ceylon porathas and not the authentic Kerala style we were expecting. Overall, the food was good, but I wouldn't call it exceptional. Thali is undoubtedly a popular Kerala-style restaurant in Ottawa, offering a modern twist on traditional dishes. The staff and atmosphere were excellent, but we don't think it will be our go-to place in the future. It would be wonderful if they could add some more authentic Kerala dishes to the menu for those who miss home and want to experience the true flavors of Kerala.
Thali Restaurant in Ottawa is a culinary gem that offers a delightful blend of authentic flavors and impeccable service. From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality. The cocktails were expertly crafted, each sip bursting with flavor and creativity, setting the perfect tone for the evening. As we indulged in the Traditional Thali, we were transported on a gastronomic journey through India, with each dish thoughtfully prepared and bursting with aromatic spices. The presentation was exquisite, and every bite was a symphony of flavors that left us craving for more. The ambiance was charming, with a touch of elegance that added to the overall dining experience. Our evening at Thali was truly unforgettable, and we can't wait to return to explore more of their tantalizing menu offerings. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an authentic taste of India in the heart of Ottawa.
Delicious, unique food! Been here several, and they always offer the same consistency. Perfect portions.
We had the most delicious meal at Thali with wonderful service. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. Would definitely recommend this restaurant, try the shrimp moile! Food
I love Thali! My husband had the lamb biriyani and I had the traditional Thali. Both were awesome, as always!! Service was great! Again, as always. If you get a chance, go!
Food was mid
What a gem! If you are looking for delicious and high quality South Asian food this is the place to go. We had the salmon curry, black dal, and eggplant and they were so delicious. I will definitely be back.
I went alone to the restaurant and had only limited options for the starters. I ordered dry chicken pakora and it was really not so good.
Great food and friendly wait staff.
First time visit. Excellent flavours with just the right amount of heat. We will be back. Parking: Parked at city hall $2 after 6pm. 10 mins walk to the restaurant.
One of the best restaurants in Ottawa, by far! I love coming here! The food is delicious and the service is welcoming and friendly. Wheelchair accessibility: Large accessible bathroom on ground floor with no steps. Much appreciated for those with mobility issues.
Always delicious. Vaguely slow for takeout orders but no errors yet.
Food is great, service is good too but need more attention to detail.
Very good and tasty Indian food
Weve been going to Thali for some time now and our latest dinner was as enjoyable as the first. Great service and wonderful food. It is a great place for a night out with someone special or with a group of friends/family. We will definitely be back :)
Limited thali. Attitude is the worst. Just South Indian food. Only brinjal is good.
There is something special about the atmosphere. The staff are friendly and the food is good. The portions are just right.
An amazing take on Indian cuisine, the service was great and the flavors were out of this world. I will be bringing my family here in the future!
All the member of my dinner party loved the food the thali platter is great. Would the amount of food be enough for my growing teenager or my athletic boyfriend? I dont think so. You need to get more naan bread and probably a plate of veggies on top. If you are like me and like the MTL spicy Indian food, its not the place. We had one small plate that was a bit spicy that was it in the entire Thali plate. The restaurant is beautiful and you need a reservation. Its always full.
Standard indian thali. Dishes tasted nice, but nothing exceptional.
Food is decent but a bit pricey and I don t think it lives up to the hype.
Great food. Great service. Average cocktail and wine selection.
Tried the maha thali and it s not worth it at all. Not coming back at all! None of the dishes tasted like authentic Kerala food.
The quantity is very less for the price they charge.Taste is ok but not the traditional taste. Atmosphere and Service was good.
Great ambiance, very neat and clean place with friendly staff. The quality of the food was excellent.
Vegetarian options: Tons of veggie options Dietary restrictions: Tons of gluten free options Food : 5/5 |
Great ambiance. kind of fine dining place. Food is average. Lacks authenticity. Diluted to the needs of local crowd. Could be btter with Indian spices.
Tasty, but would have liked a brief explanation of what each dish in the thali was.
This restaurant is not at all authentic in anyway. The food was subpar, the prices sky high for the portion sizes. Supposedly a kerala thali did not contain the essential moru curry or aviyal or theeyal. All dishes taste similar with loads of cream. Hugely disappointed,
Went there with my coworkers for lunch. Food is okay but portions are small. Butter chicken comes in a small bowl with no rice or bread. The server was misleading when she asked do you want rice or bread with your meal. She made it seem like one of them is included instead of saying would like to add bread or rice to your meal. Also we felt rushed as the server kept staring at us and asking if we are ready. We felt it was hard to have a conversation with each other. I got the feeling I should eat fast and leave
Good Indian food. High end restaurant. Prices accordingly higher. A good restaurant choice to be in. However it seems reservation is a must before going.
Worth 2nd try! I forgot to take the pictures. Had butter chicken and moilee shrimp The flatbread was getting cold and soggy when I got home, tastes still good. Will dine in next time
Portions are quite small compared to other places for the same cost. Taste was fine. Rice is sold separately on meals that should have rice automatically...
Food was good! Little overpriced.
Authentic cuisine, lovely presentation, fast and impeccable service. Very bright restaurant with modern decoration.
Their north indian food was not really good they don t have any options in breads the food had not any species their vegetables were sweet worst experience I spend 144$ they were not worth it.
I ordered the vegetarian Thali and while certainly an experience, the only way to describe it was it lacked flavor. The flavor profiles lacked intensity and while many of the dishes within the Thali were distinct enough to create uniqueness, the mild flavor profile made it lackluster.
Fine dining at its best. Loved the vegetarian thali. Worth every penny.
My first time at an Indian restaurant, and I really liked the experience. Very stylish spot downtown, good food and friendly service. Prices were average for the area.
We recently dined at Coconut Lagoon in Ottawa and had a mixed experience. First, the ambiance and spacing of the restaurant are quite nice. It has a pleasant atmosphere thats perfect for a relaxing meal. However, we were disappointed with the service. The staff seemed unwelcoming and were not attentive to our needs, which detracted from the overall experience. We ordered the Thali, priced at $27 plus tax. Unfortunately, we found the portion sizes to be quite small definitely not enough to satisfy even a moderately hungry person. To make matters worse, the flavors of the curries were off; they were either overly salty or excessively sweet. Overall, our experience at Coconut Lagoon was disappointing. Given the service and food quality, We wouldnt recommend it for anyone looking for a satisfying meal, especially if youre dining with a hungry crew.
Good place to go if you have a large group (20 people) and need to meet dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten free, allergies). They had quick service and were attentive to needs during the dinner. It was challenging for our guests with to participate in conversations and hear the serves because it was extremely loud.
Loved the food and drinks!
I was in Ottawa by myself on a work trip and was in the mood for Indian, so the option of a Thali was what brought me to the restaurant. It was great to receive an array of dishes, but most items were good, but not great. The service was quite slow and not particularly warm or helpful. Maybe I am just spoiled being from Toronto, but what hoping for better.
Thali A pretty unqiue experience downtown Ottawa, I loved the food, we got a couple Thali, the staff seemed pretty unhappy to be working that day, I had to ask multiple people for more Naan Bread and they kept saying that extra.. I said yeah, Obviously and only on the third person did they bring it to me. Still a great experience but the high school looking wait staff seemed very unexperienced. Cheers and will be back!
Fantastic food quality and flavors. Beautiful place to sit and enjoy an amazing meal
Distinctive interesting flavours. Just beware those of you who dont like spicy food.
Food was excellent, service very sub-par. Server did not come back at any time after delivering drinks. Busser delivered food - no one checked on the table until they were flagged for the bill (twice). Bills were wrong twice, despite explaining who had what. Server seemed offended at being asked to provide refills and bills, misinformed the table about what was included with a meal. For the price, not worth it.
Quantity is less, taste is average, price is above normal (according to me).
A wonderful open-air meal celebrating Indian Thanksgiving. Thanks, Joe Vegetarian options: Whole meal vegetarian and as much as wanted! Food : 5/5 |
As an Indian tourist you might endeavour to find a nice Indian restaurant in a touristy city, even more so when you are travelling with your parents. Thats what we did when we decided to come to Thali, today. We were at the Parliament hill at 2:15PM when we checked that the restaurant is open till 3PM. We decided to make this our lunch destination and booked an Uber. We reached Thali at 2:42PM when the server told us that the restaurant was already closed for the afternoon and will only open at 4:30 PM again. So we left the restaurant thinking why the hell will they not mention this on Google. May be update your closure time to 2:30PM instead of 3PM??
Excellent Indian cuisine!!!!! We had a blast...
Excellent food and attentive service, I absolutely recommend. The noise level from conversations was pretty high; I was sitting inside, in the middle of the restaurant which was quite full. Wheelchair accessibility: No stairs; should be fully wheelchair accessible. (did not check bathroom)
Food was quite average for price. Desserts and Sanbram lasi was good.
Ive visited thali twice now, and theyve been both good. Both times Ive ordered their thali dish that comes with various curries, rice, paratha and crispy chip thing. (Think its papadum. I apologize if I got the names wrong.) This time we got the chicken pakora too. This was a great starter for my husband, my toddler, my MIL and me. We also got their margaritas and these were very tasty. My MIL told me she usually gets the thali and shares it with her friend. Thats how much food thali dish has -- itd feed two people. Understandably, I couldnt finish all the contents of the thali. I tried. I really did. I was very stuffed at the end. There were some curries? that I found quite spicy so I struggled with them (chickpea one and there was another veg one I dunno.) but I really liked their protein ones, raita, beet one and cauliflower one. Their dessert thing was sweet and yummy but I couldnt finish it. Just was too stuffed. Anyway. Their paratha? was nice and flakey and just awesome with the curries/sauces. Every time I walk by thali, its torturous since their aroma is just so inviting. Eventually youll give in lol. And when u do, youll be happy you did. Ill be back. Kid-friendliness: Has high chairs
First visit here and thought it was great. Group of four and shared three apps and three curries. Apps were all excellent: crab cakes, samosas and onion fritters (still don t know why an Indian restaurant calls them fritters instead on onion bhaji?). Butter chicken, lamb mappas and shrimp moilee with rice and naan were our entrees. Everything was very flavourful, but would have appreciated a bit more heat. Service was attentive and efficient, and the restaurant does a good job of separating tables with plants. Highly recommended.
Visited this place last week on occasion of my birthday and ordered Traditional Thali which was lacking the flavour one might expect. Drinks were very good with right amount of touch. Additionally, the service was disappointing; after being shown to our seats, we waited a long time before anyone came to take our order. Overall, the experience was underwhelming to expectations and could use significant improvement.
Great food and friendly service. In my three visits, I was pleased with the experience and would be happy to return. If you appreciate authentic food that is cooked with care, you are in the right place.
Thali Restaurant is a unique dining destination in downtown Ottawa, where Indian cuisine is elevated through carefully curated tasting menus that capture all six essential flavors sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent, and spicy. Located in the vibrant Centretown area, Thali stands out not only for its contemporary and stylish décor, which features expansive windows, long communal tables, white walls, and sleek pendant lighting, but also for its innovative approach to traditional Indian dishes. The menu offers an à la carte selection, but the real highlight is the thali experience. The term thali refers to both the round platter on which the food is served and the assortment of small dishes it holds. Presented on gleaming copperware, your thali will be an artistic array of Indian specialties, including dhals, curries, vegetables, and soups, accompanied by rice, breads, pickles, chutneys, and other flavorful accompaniments. All you need to do is select your preferred protein options include fish, poultry, meat, vegan, and vegetarian and let award-winning chef Joe Thottungal and his team handle the rest. However, while the overall dining experience is commendable, there are a few areas where Thali Restaurant could improve. The prices are on the higher side, which might be acceptable if the portions matched the cost. Unfortunately, the quantity of rice and parotta provided is quite limited; you ll receive just one parotta and a small cup of rice to accompany up to 10 different curries. Additionally, parking is not provided by the restaurant, which can be inconvenient for diners. Staff training could also use some attention. While new staff members are inevitable, its crucial that everyone is equally well-trained to maintain the high standard expected from such an establishment. For instance, when I asked if the dish was Hyderabadi biryani, the staff didn t seem to know and tried to cover up their uncertainty with an unclear explanation. This detracted from the otherwise polished dining experience. Overall, Thali Restaurant offers a refreshing take on Indian cuisine with its beautifully presented thali plates and modern ambiance, but it would benefit from addressing these minor issues to truly enhance the dining experience.
I had explosions of flavours in every bite I had. Ordered Vegetarian Thali. Highly recommend
This restaurant is not recommended for Indian people or those who know Indian taste.
love Thali!! great food, and nice patio too Food
After charging $30 for a Thali, most of the dishes are empty besides one or two items. All dishes are cold & not fresh at all. Food is only topped with the disgusting customer service & pointless upselling of shameless quantities of food for the prices being charged for the horrible quality.
Food is ok, but not strong tastes, bland even. They cheap out on everything, tiny amounts of food for high price. Lashi smoothie is full of ice, never seen that before. Reduction of ingredients everywhere to reduce costs but your looking at an expensive meal.
Delicious! Best Indian from India! Poor service. Make people feel like theyre leaving. No return to the tables. Maybe the waitress in particular.
We have been to Coconut lagoon location (prior to the fire & renovations) many times. This was the first time at Thali, and they didnt disappoint us. 1 item that didnt meet our expectations was the Kerala porathas, unless they were meant to be Ceylon porathas and not Kerala porathas. Another item which should definitely make to the menu is a semi-dry item like beef fry or mutton fry. The curries were excellent, but we miss the Fry items, especially since this restaurant is catering to Kerala cuisine. The drinks that we tried were amazing. The staff and atmosphere is great! Hope to return in the near future (we r a family that would travel for food ), and see something new on the menu.
What a disappointing experience, went to this location at downtown but honestly as compared to location and beautiful environment the food taste was below average it doesn t taste like Indian cuisine which is supposed to be spicy and flavourful , I will definitely not going back there and will not recommending.
All show no taste to food, all pre made curries nothing is fresh.
DONT GO HERE FOR LUNCH!!!! They have only a page menu and no options at all. Not a very authentic kerela restaurant at all. I went with so much expectations and was so waste of money it was. We pay for food we expect quality taste and quantity.
For pure veg its not perfect Place. I took main vege thalli. Only one chapati they provide if you want more then you have to pay extra for that . Food test is average.
The waiters very kindly and the dishes a good taste experience.
A must visit if you are in Ottawa. Food was delicious.
Finally ended up at Thali after trying to get here for a while. Shared an onion badge to start. Had the lamb thali and a mango lassi. Honestly, I rarely complain about having too much food, but the thali comes with rice, papadum and naan. It was all delish but my friend and I rolled out of there as a result. All they need is fainting couches for naps afterwards and it would be perfect. Service was pretty good too. Room is quite loud, even if there is noise absorbing foam on the ceiling and rug on the floors. The dessert menu looked amazing as well, but there was no way we could partake. Go early, be hungry and enjoy!
Food was good! Visited here on Sunday 12pm and it was not busy.
Went in for appetizers with a girlfriend today. The service was excellent and very quick for a busy Saturday night. I decided to come here because they accommodate allergies well. The menu is super clear on which items contain gluten and they let me know which items we ordered (sauce) had dairy. We got the chicken pakora - shrimp Coconut Ularthu - Pappadum basket. Everything was so flavourful and delicious. I definitely want to come back and try their main dishes Dietary restrictions: Clearly marked menu. Plenty of gluten free items - were able to accommodate dairy free
Great food and nice service. Would go again immediately. The butter chicken and lentil dal were very tasty. The prices are quite expensive.
What a lovely experience! The food was fantastic and the atmosphere was great.
Lovely place with huge portions of great food.
Everything was exceptional, especially the curry s. Staff was attentive and informative about the various dishes. Which was welcomed by this Indian food rookie.
Great vegan options!!! the service was excellent and the atmosphere was wonderful!!! I had the Vegan Thali and I would have it again!! definitely recommend!!
We went to celebrate our daughters graduation and it was the perfect spot. It had a lot of options for the vegetarians in our group as well as the meat eater. We all chose a Thali, some upgraded to the 2 protein option ones. At first it doesnt look like enough food but trust me its plenty! We also added in a croquette starter and the shrimp starter too though, both were delicious. We were also so happy to see Dominion Citys Sunsplit IPA on the beer menu! Vegetarian options: Lots of option for vegetarians, wasnt a problem at all to eat here and have choices.
The food was decent although even the spiciest dishes were not very spicy (after asking the waiter to make them spicy). Nice seafood selections. The drinks were terrific.
I had a great meal here today for lunch. It was truly amazing, very flavourful and very filling. I had the lamb Thali and was not disappointed. The Nan was exquisite and pair nicely with the lamb and all the sides. This place is very busy so reservations are recommended.
Food was amazing !!
We were there on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was quite crowded. The food was excellent and service good. A little noisy and a little on the expensive side(just a little) compared to similar places we have eaten. Would definitely go back.
Phenomenal food, we went last week for our 5 year anniversary. It seems as pleasing to the traditionalist as itd be to the adventurous fusion seeker. Book in advance or arrive slightly early if youre looking for a dinner reso, especially in a larger group, as they will likely fill. The lamb chops were the best Ive ever had in my life, I didnt think it was possible for something to be packed with so much flavor and still taste like nothing is out of place or overwhelming. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the service, they simply didnt come by after but we were in such a central travel channel for staff that I think they could have fairly assumed wed be easily able to flag them down if we needed (which was the case) and it was also peak dinner hours. They even surprised us with a sweet desert and happy anniversary written in chocolate sauce despite me only having casually mentioned it during the reso! Would love to go again sometime.
Went with high hopes but the food was average. Especially wanted to try the thali, so order Chicken Thali but all it came with Butter chicken which was the savior, 1 Dal, 2 Khadi and 1 chutney wasn t sure why I paid $30 for this. Please order Thali at your own risk
Food was ok ok not very delicious. Service was very good and employees were good. Atmosphere was nice but they made us dine outside and they had no heater available. It was very very cold.
Went there for Mothers Day brunch and the food and drinks were perfection! Big shout out to the gentleman with the bright blue eyes! Service was superior, and made sure we enjoyed our beverages :) Food
Great South Indian dishes and another fine dining establishment under Joes guiding hand.
I ve been going to Thali since its previous iteration as Coconut Lagoon. This was my first time back since years abroad. The lobster masala was perfect, I still drool thinking about it. But at $32 it was literally only a cup and half, AND rice or naan was extra. By extra, they mean $4 for a SINGLE small naan. The price was shocking. I think the restauranteur is trying to go the fine dining direction which he does have the potential for but the pricing does not befit the environment of the ground floor of an office building in a business district that s dead after work hours.
Excellent Indian food. The curries and roti were delicious. The service is amazing as well, very attentive staff!
First time here with friends and unfortunately I was not too impressed. Let me explain. The place was classy enough with nice ambience. The servers were polite but rather subdued. With the high prices on the menu, we were expecting reasonable portions. BUT NO. The main dish portions were so small we even had to checked that they gave us the main dishes, and not the appetizers. Were not big eaters but we were left hungry after our meals. So we ended up going to another restaurant so as not to go hungry for the rest of the night. The food was good, but not any better than other Indian restaurants. OK, the atmosphere was nice but such small portions especially with such high prices? Never again. I dont think a place like this will get many repeat customers. Perhaps their aim is to get the tourists. Anyway, none of us will be returning to this place.
Boring ! The food is so bland and boring ! Only tolerable item is probably raita n rice coz that is like the food that is supposed to be boring ! Service was good the waitstaff ia good but the food is super whitewashed. Please dont call it indian food
They make delicious Indian food here, but Ive also had just as delicious Indian food at other, less busy and popular establishments. Im not a fan of the open concept everyone is dining together setting. The staff are amazing and service very good. They can get a little delayed if the resto is full but nothing Id hold against them. If you have the chance, definitely give it a shot. If you dont have the chance, dont feel like youve missed out.
This is honestly the best food in Ottawa. I come here twice a week sometimes and the lamb is always so tender and packed with flavour! The service is amazing (shoutout Parampreet Kaur) and the music/atmosphere is so vibrant! Highly recommend the lamb mappas, lamb chops, rasmalai, and honestly everything else on the menu!
Wow! Thali beats the best of the best in the UK and Toronto. The lamb was delicious, we shared a few starters and a delightfully spiced Kerala curry. we didn t have the platter that everyone else seemed to be having and I got serious FOMO. Top notch staff and just the right relaxed/sophisticated setting to make me feel pampered and worth it . We tried the Cool India beer too - loved it! Thanks Thali and Ottawa we will be back
Really tasty and so rich in flavor. One of the nicest Indian restaurants in town!
Was the first time I dine there and was pleased . I hope they have a surcursale in Edmonton where I can go.
Delicious food, great atmosphere. And a convenient locations
To be honest it is very hyped up and food is just tasteless. Won t be going again. Tried one of their thali and paneer masala and it was very bland. Will forever recommend Mehfil - just try their shahi paneer.
Very beautiful setting
This a great way to experience Thali style cuisine. Includes pappadum, naan and one option of a meat dish served with about 8 other vegetarian items. Nice wine list and selection of beers and other beverages. Vegetarian options: Great variety of dishes for all tastes. Understand this is well spiced Indian cuisine.
This place is perfect for a family meal. The food was incredibly delicious, especially the Vegetarian Thali which was ample for two. The staff were exceptionally helpful and attentive, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommended for a delightful and satisfying meal with loved ones!
Authentic and delicious
Expensive for what you get. Crab cakes were bland and lukewarm despite being served decently quickly for a group order. Thali having no description of the dish made it hard to know what comes with it. The dish was overall not as savory as other issues restaurants Ive had the pleasure of enjoying. Very medium. Naan bread was good but you get a single one. Would have rather the group had eaten somewhere else
Rude staff. They left the door open when we didnt know they were closed. They were rude about us entering
Incredible food
Good spot for non-vegetarian thalis!!
Great experience at this restaurant! Food is excellent and the service is awsome
Had the vegetable thali and chicken curry. Very good food! Highly recommended.
100% on presentation but not much effort into vegetarian and vegan thali, no proteins at all.
Excellent food, the fish and the meat cooked to perfection, and delicious deserts! Would definitely recommend!
Good but not wow,its like when your average gf gets dressed up lol
The food was decent but it felt a bit like a cafeteria with bright lights and ikea chairs.
My first visit to Thali on O Connor, warm friendly busy place. Birthday dinner for my friend, we had lamb thali and chicken thali, & red wine, it was good food, very filling I couldn t eat everything. We had the shrimp coconut starter very tasty! Kayleigh our server was lovely she prepared a special something for dessert as told her it was birthday of my friend. We had raspberry sorbet and it was delicious! I will go back it was a great evening! I highly recommend Thali on O Connor!
I went there with a bunch of friends ... We were 10 , out server was super nice , the service was impeccable, the food was more than good , good recommendations, they even sell a cookbook at the cash ! I really recommend this restaurant and Will come back for sure 10/10
Very surprising trap tourist i would say La nourriture est fade et sans goût not tasty at all very basic food !!! And Not fresh at all the lamb is hard like it was not cooked the same day not spicy at all !! And the prices don t make any sense too freaking expensive for what it is!!!! I guess the people who eat over there don t know quality indian food!!! The bill 250$ for 4 meals without wine !!!!! Not worth it at all !! Passez votre tour ne vaut pas le detour ! We were so disappointed wow can t compare to coconnut lagoon on st Laurent street it s another level !!! We will never go back there !!! Too commercial and not good !!!! The service is very good but the meal was so nasty i refuse to quote a good service for the price sorry !!!!!!
Horrendous service and that s what s going to stick with me about this restaurant. The food was okay and the ambience was also decent. The service: the restaurant wasn t busy, we were a total of 5 guests in the restaurant. Two of the guests came after us and ordered after us and still got their food before ours (they were Indian in race). We thought that was a bit odd. But we ended up waiting 45 minutes for our food (we only ordered one main platter each and on appetizer). On top of that, whilst we were waiting 3 of the employees/servers sat down at one of the tables and served themselves a bunch of food. While they indulged in their food, we sat their watching Never visiting again.
Biryani and lamb chanks are outstanding. Busy time but overall
Food is amazing. Had the signature Thali dish, so many amazing tastes. Drinks were also excellent.
Great experience. The menu was easy to navigate with gluten-free and vegan options clearly labeled. The Vegan Thali was delicious! And dont forget to order the assorted pickles!
Did pickup When we arrived we were informed that white rice was not included with the butter chicken...had to pay $7 extra to get white rice. That left a bad taste in my mouth Food
Ambience is nice, even though the tables are close to each other there are plants separating the tables, which gives you some privacy. Service was ok, we had never been there before and the server seemed to be in a rush, wouldnt give further explanation to our questions. Food was ok. We ordered a butter chicken for our kid, it was $23, for that price you would expect at least a bowl of rice with it, but it was just a small bowl of butter chicken (very spicy, even though requested mild, kid could not eat it. Tasted good for us, well seasoned). The Thali was nicely presented but nothing special for the price tag. Was expecting more. I was there on a Saturday evening (while Winterlude was happening) and it was very busy, reservation recommended. Kid-friendliness: No options for kids if they dont eat spicy food (butter chicken was very spicy)
We had the most incredible meal at Thali last night. For a special birthday, we booked this restaurant based on recommendations and because I was fortunate to attend a cooking demonstration by Chef Joe. Pleasantly surprised by their Winterlude special, which all 3 of us chose. It was better than our expectations. Great atmosphere. Great Service. Absolutely stunning food and a special something for the bday boy. Will go back again, and again.
Excellent food. Extremely tasty!
I was charged extra for sharing my meal. Overall good experience but all categories decreased due to the odd bill.
This place is one of the best spots in Ottawa.
I had ordered the veg thali, and a few things were great while some others were either ok or not that great. The okra curry was too slimy and the daal was just not the taste I m used to. The mushroom curry and cauliflower curry was delicious, and the kheer was also good. The remaining items were average, I feel some things can be improved on. As a Gujarati myself, I have definitely had better tasting curries/daal, so my expectations are slightly high if we are being charged a high price.
One free advice: You should not visit it:) Btw coke was good Food : 1/5
Any Indian food lovers could not go to this restaurant
I feel like not to give them 1 star also. Food is not even close to indian food. The food was tasteless and talking about quantity- less quantity and very very high prices. Never ever go there. Waste of time and money both.
Stay clear if you enjoy spicy meals. The food was cheaply produced and bland in relation to its cost. The vegetarian cuisine was awful Food
I didn t find it good enough for me to satisfy my taste. Food tastes so bad that you can t even finish the half of it. The quality of napkin was high but that doesn t make it to the level of taste. Not worth it spending even 20$ for food. Don t come to this place if you are looking for spicy Indian food.
If you want your food spicy, stay away. For the price, the dish was boring and poorly prepared. The vegetarian food was terrible Food
A well maintained restaurant serving Kerala (a south Indian state) meals in a fine dining setting. I have been to several indian restaurants across Canada, but this one surprised me. I had a chicken thali and it was good. The service was excellent and they accommodated my request well. Price is a bit on the high end however.
Best Butter Chicken in town.
Most pathetic so called authentic Indian but dont know how
We ordered 2 Thali one vegetarian and one Maha thali with 2 protein. Food really was just ok . Nothing special about it for the amount you pay for it ! Ambience is nice and welcoming. You have to look for street parking and pay for it. Service at the restaurant was not exceptional and one of the servers was very rude and loud when I asked about refills . With two Thalis and 3 drinks we ended up paying about$150 (food+tip) .
Ordered 5 curries. Worst chicken biryani weve ever tasted. Dont know what spices were used. Chick pea curry, however, was great. Remaining dishes were mediocre at best. Not worth the money. Will not return.
For our wedding anniversary we decided to try somewhere we haven t been before and we decided to go here. We both love Indian foods and this place was spot on, staff were very friendly and we were stuffed to the point we couldn t finish everything and didn t even want to look at the desert menu. Definitely returning to try other foods there.
Overpriced food because the customers are most white people. If the food was more authentic don t you think we d see more diversity leaning towards Indian? Think about it. Food : 2/5
It was indeed an exceptional experience for our family.
First time visiting Thalia, and unfortunately the last time. The decor of the restaurant was very nice, and the servers were so friendly. Unfortunately the food was underwhelming. Although the presentation was nice, and the large platter with assortment of flavors is an interesting idea, the execution was poor. The sauces were bland, the meat was tough. My wifes butter chicken seasoning was ok, but again the chicken was tough overcooked balls of meat. As Lunch was $107 can after tax/tip, the meal was not the experienced I had hoped for. I see a number of reviews offer praise for the food, I can only speak to what I had for lunch.
I ordered the Maha thali with fish and prawns curry( protein) as per the menu, the prawn in my curry was cold on the tail, There are other restaurants with a similar taste and quantity at a lower price. This was my second instance of trying out the restaurant food, as the first time I had the duck Biryani at the Jazz festival. I definitely liked the taste but not at the price tag which I paid. The service by the representatives was just amazing. Well dressed and a clean restaurant which was worth the visit. Vegetarian options: It is a vegetarian restaurant with a variety of Non-veg options. Dietary restrictions: You can update the representative on order. Parking: We had a short walk to the restaurant from the parking lot. Paid $5 for parking. Kid-friendliness: There was a high chair available upon request. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, it is a wheelchair accessible restaurant, but did not pay attention to automatic door openings.
Always tasty food and prompt service.
Loved the food though the potions could have been a bit more generous at lunch. Great service and was fast.
Have good looking entrance of Thali restaurant. Full furnished of dining. I have had dinner with my family and friend family. We ordered chicken Thali ,shrimp Thali , starter chicken pakora and chicken Briyani . Nice meal. Every people should enjoy their foods. Not spicy food. Anyone like spicy food it s not suitable.
Always a great experience having dinner here. The lamb thali was very tasty. The service was perfect!
